Ho, Johan. "Bluetooth broadcasting." Thesis, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Computer and Information Science, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:no:ntnu:diva-10063.
Full textBackground: The wireless technology Bluetooth has rapidly become more commonly supported by electronic devices like mobile phones and PDAs. Several companies are currently developing Bluetooth broadcasting systems to use for marketing. This report is a result of researching the use of Bluetooth broadcasting for delivering information for more general purposes, how well Bluetooth actually works for broadcasting, and also on the topic of user privacy. Results: Broadcasting with Bluetooth did work with a few devices at the same time, since Bluetooth allows up to seven connections to one Bluetooth radio at the same time. By making a passive system where the user is the one which requests information, it also will not affect users' privacy. However, my research also found a few issues with the Bluetooth which might affect a broadcast, the most noticeable of them being the somewhat low transfer rate, an issue with device discovery not always working when a lot of users are doing device discovery at the same time. The fact that it only supports seven connections is also a limitation. Basically, while it is possible to use Bluetooth for broadcasting, it might be problematic to use it for targeting a large audience. Conclusions: Even with the problems mentioned, Bluetooth broadcasting provides quite a unique way of broadcasting, and with the newer versions of Bluetooth the issues mentioned might be less of a problem. Bluetooth broadcasting definitely has some potential.

In this work, I situate e-sports broadcasting within the larger sports media industrial complex, discuss e-sportscasters, and investigate the economics behind the growing e-sports industry. E-sports, often referred to as competitive or professional gaming, stands as a prime example of the merger of work and play. A growing body of literature has started focusing on this pastime turned profession. As more professionals enter the scene and audiences continue to grow, e-sports broadcasters look towards older models of broadcasting to inform their own style. This reapplication of former conventions stands in contrast to the trends in the larger sports media trajectory. E-sports broadcasting is largely informed by traditional sports broadcasting, yet remains unable to fully capture the success of the global sports industry. On-air talent, once informed solely by traditional sportscasters are now looking to their fellow e-sportscasters to create something new. Revenue streams which form the foundation of the sports industry are making their way into e-sports but not in the way that one might expect. Through a variety of qualitative methods, including historical analysis, interviews, and fieldwork, I have investigated e-sports broadcasting to better evaluate the role traditional sports broadcasting has played in shaping the e-sports industry. This work looks not only to what e-sports broadcasters have borrowed from prior sports media, but also where they have innovated.

Prytz, Anders. "Video Quality Assessment in Broadcasting." Thesis, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Electronics and Telecommunications, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:no:ntnu:diva-10870.
Full textIn broadcasting, the assessment of video quality is mostly done by a group of highly experienced people. This is a time consuming task and demands lot of resources. In this thesis the goal is to investigate the possibility to assess perceived video quality with the use of objective quality assessment methods. The work is done in collaboration with Telenor Satellite Broadcasting AS, to improve their quality verification process from a broadcasting perspective. The material used is from the SVT Fairytale tape and a tape from the Norwegian cup final in football 2009. All material is in the native resolution of 1080i and is encoded in the H.264/AVC format. All chosen compression settings are more or less used in daily broadcasting. A subjective video quality assessment been carried out to create a comparison basis of perceived quality. The subjective assessment sessions carried out by following ITU recommendations. Telenor SBc provided a video quality analysing system, the Video Clarity Clearview system that contains the objective PSNR, DMOS and JND. DMOS and JND are two pseudo-subjective assessment methods that use objective methods mapped to subjective results. The methods hopefully predict the perceived quality and eases quality assessment in broadcasting. The correlation between the subjective and objective results is tested with linear, exponential and polynomial fitting functions. The correlation for the different methods did not achieve a result that proved use of objective methods to assess perceived quality, independent of content. The best correlation result is 0.75 for the objective DMOS method. The analysis shows that there are possible dependencies in the relationship between subjective and objective results. By measuring spatial and temporal information possible dependent correlation results are investigated. The results for dependent relationships between subjective and objective results are good. There are some indications that the two pseudo-subjective methods, JND and DMOS, can be used to assess perceived video quality. This applies when the mapping functions are dependent on spatial and temporal information of the reference sequences. The correlation achieved for dependent fitting functions, that has a suitable progression, are in the range 0.9 -- 0.98. In the subjective tests, the subjects used were non-experts in quality evaluation. Some of the results indicate that subjects might have a problem with assessing sequences with high spatial information. This thesis creates a basis for further research on the use of objective methods to assess the perceived quality.

Full textThe business environment has become more risky over the past decades. How do the companies prepare for the competitive environment and how are they working with risk identification and risk management, early warning system and blindspots in order to strengthen their positions on the market? In order to sufficiently investigate the subject, the following two problems function as the base of the thesis. What change drivers affect the industry, and what are the risks that these changes generate for the companies on a strategic, operative and financial level? How does the Swedish broadcasting industry work with business intelligence in order to strengthen their position towards their competitors as well as preparing for future changes in the environment in which they operate? The purpose of the thesis is to examine and identify the main factors affecting the broadcasting industry in Sweden, using TV3, TV4 and Kanal5 as reference points and how Business Intelligence is conducted and applied within these companies in order to strengthen their position. The method approach used is of an explorative kind since no previous studies were found on the subject. The information gathered is mainly of a qualitative kind using some quantitative data. The thesis has been conducted as case studies of the three companies. Several interviews with relevant personal within the organizations studied were conducted. In our final discussion we have concluded that the companies are efficiently identifying their risks and management action is taken rapidly when necessary. In contrast, the intelligence monitoring within the studied companies is rather weak according to Gilad’s theories of the Early Warning Triangle. The industry change drivers strongly affect the development of the industry and must be carefully observed in order to react proactively to the many risks the companies are exposed to.
