Abstract:
Sweet Briar House is one of the best documented sites in Virginia, with sources ranging from architectural drawings and extensive archives to original furnishings. Sweet Briar House was purchased by Elijah Fletcher, a prominent figure in Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1830. Thirty years later it passed into the possession of his daughter Indiana Fletcher Williams, and remained her home until her death in 1900. In her will, Williams left instructions for the founding of Sweet Briar Institute, an educational institution for women that exists today as Sweet Briar College. This dissertation examines Sweet Briar House in three distinct phases, while advancing three theses. The first thesis proposes that the double portico motif introduced by Palladio at the Villa Cornaro in the sixteenth century became the fundamental motif of Palladianism in Virginia architecture, generating a line of offspring that proliferated in the eighteenth century and beyond. The Palladian plantation (Sweet Briar House I, c. 1800) featured this double portico. In 1851, following the return of the Fletcher children from an extended Grand Tour of Europe, the house was remodeled as an Italianate villa (Sweet Briar House II, 1851-52). The second thesis advances the contention that by renovating their Palladian house into an asymmetrical Italianate villa, the Fletcher family implemented an ideal solution between the balanced façade that characterized the Palladian Sweet Briar House I and the fashion for the Picturesque that dominated American building in the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1876, the Williams family traveled to the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, where visitors were presented with an unimaginable array of artistic possibilities from countless eras and nations, exactly the conditions that the Aesthetic Movement needed to flourish in America. The third thesis maintains that the Williams family’s decision to transform Sweet Briar House into an Aesthetic Movement retreat was inspired by their reaction to the Centennial, and in particular by their appreciation for the Japanese objects presented there.

Abstract:
This article claims that Ralph Ellison's use and then revision of French existential themes is essential to understanding his overriding message of Invisible Man: Ellison's hope for a more polyglot American democracy that transcends the white democracy of mid twentieth century America. Specifically, I argue that Ellison, after demonstrating his ability to understand and engage in the traditional ideology of European existentialism, deviates from its individualistic conclusions demanding that the larger community, not just the solitary individual, must become ethically responsible if the classic existential tenet of authenticity is to be achieved. In order to establish this claim, I identify key passages in Invisible Man that indicate Ellison's desire to engage the existential movement. Writings from Camus and Sartre provide the foundation for comparison between Ellison's work and the French based philosophy. This background provides the groundwork to explore Ellison's deviations from the existential forms of his day. These departures have significant implications for Ellison's view of a socially productive individual, and therefore of his message in Invisible Man. In order to document the prevalence of existentialism in Ellison's literary consciousness, I then discuss its rise and decline in postwar New York. I also outline what is known about Ellison's relationship to the movement. Lastly, I conclude with a discussion of the philosophical tradition of existential philosophy and the difference between the philosophy of existence, seen in the Western canon through philosophers like Kierkegaard, and existentialism, one of its popular manifestations that peaked in the 1940s. Separating the two existential movements allows me to explore the tangential way most Ellison critics have associated him with existentialism and advocate for a more inclusive critical discussion of Ellison's relationship to existentialism.

Abstract:

In this study, the water quality of Sweet Briar Lake was tested to determine the trophic state of the lake and to determine if the lake can support aquatic organisms. Water samples were collected from two locations at different depths. Samples were collected once a month for six months. Six tests were conducted to help determine the trophic state and water quality of the lake. The tests conducted were nitrogen concentration, phosphorus concentration, Chlorophyll-a concentration, Secchi disc transparency, dissolved oxygen levels and water temperature. Total nitrogen at both locations ranged from 1.767 mg/L to 3.340 mg/L. Total phosphorus at both locations ranged from 0.086 mg/L to 0.724 mg/L. Chlorophyll-a concentrations at location 1 ranged from 0.0176 mg/L to 0.0412 mg/L and location 2 ranged from 0.00834 mg/L to 0.0147 mg/L. Secchi disc transparency at location 1 ranged from 0.4 m to 0.6 m and location 2 ranged 0.6 m to 1.75 m. Oxygen levels did not fall below 2 mg/L except at location 2, during the months of June and July. All tests indicated that Sweet Briar Lake was highly eutrophic to hypereutrophic. Oxygen levels in the lake are adequate to support aquatic organisms.

Abstract:
The Holocaust has been increasingly represented in literature for young adults and children; this representation often makes use of alternative forms of narrative. For example, the young adult texts Briar Rose, by Jane Yolen, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne, and The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, use the forms of the fairy tale, the fable, and a very unique narrator, respectively, to represent the Holocaust in narrative. This thesis uses Theresa Rogers’ identification of spaces of the Holocaust to show which spaces are represented in each text, and Rick Altman’s theory of narrative to discuss how the narratives function in relation to the framing and following-patterns used.

The Grimm Brothers’ Little Briar-Rose is a beloved fairytale, which is more commonly known as Sleeping Beauty. What began as a Volksmärchen, is now a world famous and beloved Kunstmärchen. The Brothers collected and adapted the tale, incorporating their own literary style, helping to develop a literary Germanic cultural history. In this thesis I analyze how the tale evolves from the original oral tale to the literary story, and how various perspectives of culture and authors, with particular audiences in mind, adapt their versions. Historical background of the Grimms and their influences, an analysis of how the story was revised by the Grimms in the 1812 and 1857 editions, how American children’s versions compare to the Grimms’ version and how Jane Yolen’s version of Sleeping Beauty meets the structural and cultural expectations of the Grimms’ tale are examined.

Abstract:
Min studie tar avstamp i det spänningsfält som innebär att i det moderna samhället skall förskolan som institution erbjuda en likvärdig verksamhet för alla barn oavsett språkliga och kulturella skillnader. Syftet med min studie är att genom interkulturellt perspektiv undersöka förskolechefens och förskollärarnas sätt att bemöta asylsökande barn och vårdnadshavare samt hur förskollärarna arbetar med integration och kultur i förskolan. Studien har en kvalitativ ansats där semistrukturerade intervjuer har gjords med en förskolechef och två förskollärare. Studiens empiriska material har sedan analyserats med hjälp av det interkulturella perspektivet och tidigare forskning inom ämnet. Studiens resultat visar att bemötande av asylsökande barn och deras föräldrar är ett komplex uppdrag. Bra mottagande beror på personalens förhållningssätt, arbets- och livserfarenheter och organisationen av verksamheten. Trots att det är ett svårt uppdrag som skiljer sig på många olika sätt från de andra uppdrag så är det ingenting som är omöjligt att genomföra. Studiens resultat pekar även på att trots att det i synnerhet är en segregerad organisatorisk form, får barnen möjlighet till kulturellt utbyte och språkutveckling genom ett genuint samarbete med en integrerad förskola vilket skapar goda förutsättningar för integrering.

Sprickor i två nya freivorbau broar gav anledningen att undersöka om det finns brister i de svenska normerna BBK 94. Många kunniga inom området har skrivit om problemet. De har också genomfört beräkningar och jämfört de svenska med andra normer för att se om det finns grund att tro att de svenska inte uppfyller de krav på säkerhet som man förväntar sig. Under-sökningarna har centrerat sig kring beräkningen av tvärkraftkapaciteten, utan någon ingående analys av sprickbreddskriterier. Därför har detta examensarbete koncentrerat sig på sprick-breddberäkningar med hjälp av BBK 94 och jämfört dessa med andra normer. Utvecklingen av freivorbau broar går hand i hand med framsteg inom spännbetong och konsolutbyggnadsmetoder. Många framsteg gjordes under 1900-talets början men det var inte förrän under mitten av förra seklet som freivorbau broar blev en av brobyggandets viktigaste lösningar för långa spännvidder där formsättning skulle vara kostsam. Trots spännarmeringens gynnsamma effekter med hänsyn till sprickbildning har freivorbau broar haft stora problem på detta område. Sprickorna i freivorbau broar är svåra att upptäcka. En noggrann undersökning tillsammans med kunskapen om den historiska bakgrunden av konstruktionen krävs för att hitta sprickor i broarna. Även om sprickorna i spännarmerad-betong inte brukar vara stora kan även små sprickor vara ett tecken på allvarliga problem. Dessutom kan sprickor leda till korrosionsproblem i armeringen. Mycket har skrivits om tvärkraftskapaciteten enligt BBK 94. Å ena sidan har kritik framförts emot att BBK 94 tvärkraftskapaciteten ger alltför höga värden jämfört med europeiska normer. Dessutom ifrågasätts om additionsprincipen är rätt vid denna typ av konstruktioner. Å andra sidan visar beräkningar att BBK 94 inte ger särskild höga värden när man jämför den med andra normer såsom de tyska, engelska och amerikanska. En sprickbreddsberäkningsjämförelse av BBK 94 och dess föregångare BBK 79 visar att beräkningarna inte har ändrats. Däremot finns det små skillnader med hänsyn till gräns-dragningar. Även de amerikanska och de europeiska normerna jämfördes med svenska BBK 94, dock inte så ingående som norska NS 3473 och tyska DIN 1045-1. NS 3473 är ganska lik BBK 94 samtidigt som DIN 1045-1 har en lite mer annorlunda struktur. En beräkningsjämförelse mellan BBK 94, NS 3473, DIN 1045-1 och DIN 1045 visar hur lite de olika normerna skiljer sig åt. Beräkningar genomfördes med olika typer av tvärsnitt med antingen varierande påkänningar eller armeringsarea.
Cracks in two new cantilever-constructed girder bridges led to the analysis of Swedish standards in the form of BBK 94. Many experts within this field of science have written different theories on what is wrong with these Swedish standards. Others have taken it a step further by calculating the necessary armouring with both Swedish and international standards and comparing them to see if Swedish standards differ greatly from other standards. These studies have concentrated themselves on the shear capacity without any analysis over the crack width. Therefore, this report concentrates on crack width calculations with BBK 94 and compares it to other standards. Development of cantilever-constructed girder bridges has its roots in both advances in cantilever construction and prestressed concrete. Many advances were made in the beginning of the twentieth century but it wasn’t until the mid twentieth century when cantilever-constructed girder bridges became a part of the European skyline. Cantilever-constructed bridges are one of the most important solutions when working with long spans where wooden forms would be uneconomical. Despite prestressed armouring’s positive effects on crack widths, cantilever-constructed bridges have had big problems with cracks. Cracks in this type of bridge are difficult to see and careful checks with a good historic background are essential in determining the condition of the bridges. Even though cracks in prestressed concrete are not very wide, they can still lead to grave problems and be a sign of a faulty construction. As mentioned above, studies have concentrated themselves on the shear capacity in BBK 94. An argument against the use of BBK 94 in designing this type of bridge is that the values for the shear capacity are too big when compared with other European standards. Another argu-ment is that the addition method, which is the method used in BBK 94, is not the optimal method for this type of construction but rather the inclination method should be used. Even if this is true, comparisons between calculations made with BBK 94 and other standards show that the numerical difference between BBK 94 and other standards is not that big. There is no difference between BBK 94 and its predecessor, in form of BBK 79, when calculating crack widths. On the other hand, there are small differences when comparing the boundaries used in the calculations. American and European standards were also compared with the Swedish BBK 94 but none of them as meticulous as the Norwegian NS 3473 and the German DIN 1045-1. NS 3473 is very similar to BBK 94 while DIN 1045-1 has a different structure. Crack width calculations were made with BBK 94, NS 3473, DIN 1045-1 and DIN 1045 to see how much they differed from BBK 94. The calculations were made with three different types of cross-sections and force and reinforcement area as variables. BBK 94, NS 3473, and DIN 1045 gave very similar results while DIN 1045-1 gave slightly different results.

Broar med integrerade landfästen har blivit allt populärare i bl.a. USA, Kanada och Storbritannien. Den främsta orsaken sägs vara de låga underhållskostnaderna. I Sverige har broar med integrerade landfästen byggts på ett fåtal platser. Syftet med rapporten har varit att ta undersöka om brotypen passar för svenska förhållanden. Med integrerade landfästen menas att överbyggnad och landfäste byggs samman till en samverkande enhet. Grundläggningen görs med flexibla pålar som gjuts in i överbyggnaden. Rapporten innehåller en litteraturstudie, resultat från fullskaleförsök av stålpålar, analysmetoder, erfarenheter från byggandet av en bro samt kostnadsjämförelse mellan olika brotyper. Fokuseringen ligger på samverkansbroar grundlaggda på X-pålar

Abstract:
Denna rapport har kommit till efter en studie som genomförts för att försöka identifiera de viktigaste faktorerna som påverkar valet av slitlager på broar. Studien syftade även till att försöka bringa klarhet över vilka grunder som slitlager tidigare har valts på och bör väljas på i framtiden. Resultatet av studien är att slitlager riskeras att baseras på oklara grunder utan en tydlig motivering och otydliga riktlinjer. Det är ofta som personliga åsikter har ett stort inflytande i valet av slitlager. Ekonomi, typ av entreprenad eller estetik är andra avgörande faktorer vid val av slitlager. Studien har genomförts utifrån djupgående intervjuer med sakkunniga personer.
This report is the result of a study conducted to try to identify the most important factors affecting the choice of surface course on bridges. The study also aimed to clarify the reasons for which surface course were previously chosen and should be chosen in the future. The result of the study is that the surface course are likely to be chosen on unclear grounds without a clear motivation and unclear guidelines. It is often that private opinions have a big influence on the choice of the surface course. Economics, type of contract or aesthetics are other crucial factors in choosing of the surface course. The study has been conducted using in-depth interviews with people having knowledge in the field.

Abstract:
My dissertation explores postcolonial implications of performances in Brian Friel's plays. While showing Friel's theatre is performative with its alienation effect and artistic activities of music, songs, dances, and recitations, I demonstrate that Irish self, culture, and history in Friel's plays are performative as well, because they are shown to be socially constructed rather than inherently possessed, constantly contested rather than comfortably settled, in dynamic process of remaking rather than fixed as finished products. Examining performances in Friel's theatre, characters' daily lives, historical narratives, and cultural ceremonies, I argue that those performances also shed light on the (post)colonial situation in Ireland¡ªa split island with mongrel arts, interstitial characters, disparate histories, and mythologized or relegated cultures. Showing that Irish self, history, and culture are not homogenous, linear, or monolithic entities but hybrid, contested constructs, Friel's plays subvert the binaries embedded in British colonialism, Irish nationalism, and developmental historicism. However, as Friel's characters fail to negotiate the symbiotic yet opposing forces such as the north and the south, English and Irish, official history and personal story, national myth and folk culture, tradition and modernity, my dissertation concludes that in Friel's plays to be Irish is to suffer a hybrid yet split and liminal existence, to be framed by official discourses and cultural myths, and to contend for alternative expressions of history and culture. Friel's concern with performance thus culminates in his performative conception of Irish identity¡ªas a heterogeneous composite with ongoing contestation between different selves, historical narratives, and cultural practices, it cannot but remain open to different expressions and constant (re)definitions.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of a portfolio of compositions with the addition of 5 CD's, commentaries on selected compositions and additional written material placing submitted work in context. It is that context which supplies the title of the thesis. It is my contention that a composers' work is affected by the culture surrounding them, and that that culture contains a number of musical and social factors which impinge upon a composers' interaction with the world. In my case, I seek to show how a combination of my formative experiences and somewhat unusual musical background have influenced my work and contributed to its unique qualities. Firstly, I outline the aesthetic principles underpinning my music. My journey through the world of music and music education has given me the ability to forge my own aesthetic and compositional path, and this thesis reflects upon this process in some detail in order to illuminate those aspects of my own musical practice which I believe may serve to contribute to the debates currently surrounding music. In doing this, I attempt to both redefine musical categorizations according to consumer behaviour rather than musicological opinion and argue for definitions which are as culturally neutral as possible. I then describe in detail the compositional procedures utilized in my work, and reflect upon the extent to which these are governed by my formative experiences. Finally, the more large scale submitted pieces have accompanying commentaries, highlighting aspects of musical practice or background which may be relevant. 'Brian Wilshere: The Drummer as Composer' is a summation of several years in the life of a drummer/composer attempting to earn a living, write some music and obtain performances of that music.

Abstract:
Brian Jackson rose from a working-class background, through a scholarship to Huddersfield College, to gain a first in English at Cambridge. Though now largely forgotten, his was one of the most innovative voices to influence the major changes in educational thought and practice which occurred during the 1960s and early '70s. This thesis examines his achievements and attempts to explain his failure, ultimately, to find a role for himself. Brian Jackson's main talent was to give substance to ideas, but once a thing was running he seems to have lost interest, anxious for a new challenge. In 1962 he published, with Dennis Marsden, Education and the Working Class: a seminal influence on the acceptance of comprehensive education by the Left. He went on to become director of the Advisory Centre for Education [1962-1974] which he built into a powerful lobbying force, using the media to good effect. A notable success was his creation of the Universities Clearing House scheme in conjunction with the Sunday Times. In 1963 he founded the National Extension College in Cambridge as a prototype for the Open University, pioneering all the new techniques the OU was to use subsequently. He became increasingly concerned with pre-school care and founded the National Children's Centre in Huddersfield in 1975, which spawned a TV Series for childminders; Other People's Children. In 1978 he pioneered the Childcare Switchboard, a forerunner of Childline, on Radio Nottingham, which led to his founding Contact Inc. in Australia in 1979. Jackson wrote innumerable articles and books, including Streaming and Childminder, on education and childcare. I byggbranschen har nya metoder för lastanalys utvecklats och digitaliserats med hjälp av datorer och kraftfulla analysprogram. En stor del av dagens lastanalys utförs med hjälp av FEM baserade program. Dessa program bidrar till mer tidsbesparing och större noggrannhet.FEM-Design är ett FEM baserad analys program som kan hantera olika typer konstruktioner. Trots detta är inte programmet tillräckligt lämpat för brodimensionering när det gäller trafiklaster på broar. Konstruktören behöver därför gå igenom Eurokods-och Trafikverkets regler och krav för att hitta information kring trafikaster och därefter skapa dem i programmet.För att kunna utnyttja programmets kraftiga funktioner och anpassa det mer för brodimensionering, behöver programmet kompletteras med nya funktioner som underlättar hantering av rörliga laster. Målet var att undersöka olika lastmodeller enligt Eurokoden och TRVFS, och skapa dem i FEM-Design. Dessutom peka ut vilka förbättringar som kan utföras i programmet för att underlätta hantering av dessa trafiklaster.Tillsammans med StruSoft AB utfördes lastdefinitioner av Lastmodell 1, Lastmodell 2, och Lastmodell 3 i programmet FEM-Design.Resultatet av arbetet visar en mängd nya fordonslaster som definierades i programmet och som är baserade på det europeiska Eurokoden, och inhemska krav.Programmet FEM-Design går framgångsrikt att göras mer praktisk för brodimensioneringar. Med fortsatta studier, extra funktioner, och mer lastmodell-definitioner har FEM-Design potentialen att även konkurrera med andra bro-program.
In the construction industry, new methods of load analysis have been developed and digitized using computers and powerful analysis programs. A large part of today's load analysis is performed using FEM based programs, which contributes to time saving and greater accuracy.FEM-Design is a FEM based analysis program that can handle different types of constructions. Nevertheless, the program is not sufficiently applied to bridge dimensioning when it comes to traffic loads on bridges. The designer therefore needs to review the Eurocode rules and national requirements in order to find information about the moving loads and then define them in the program.In order to utilize the program's powerful features and suit it more for bridge dimensioning, the program needs to be complemented with new features that will facilitate the handling of moving loads. The goal was to examine the different load models according to the Eurocode and TRVFS, and creates them in FEM Design. In addition, identify which improvements can be made to the program to facilitate the handling of the traffic loads.Together with StruSoft AB, load definitions of Load model 1, Load model 2, and Load model 3 were performed in the FEM-Design program.The result of the work shows a number of new vehicle loads as defined in the program, which are based on the European Eurocode, and the country's special requirements.The program can successfully be made more practical for bridge constructions. With continued studies, additional features, and more load model definitions, FEM-Design has the potential to compete with other bridge programs.

Encenada pela primeira vez em 1980 em Derry, na Irlanda do Norte, pela Companhia de Teatro Field Day, Translations de Brian Friel é considerada um marco na história teatral irlandesa, suscitando diversas interpretações e análises que abrangem diversos campos de estudo: do pós-colonialismo aos estudos de linguagem. O foco desta dissertação é o estudo da linguagem dentro da criação artística na Irlanda, tanto na formação do teatro irlandês como na formação da literatura irlandesa, tendo como objetivo a leitura de Translations como uma metáfora para a criação da literatura irlandesa como um todo. O presente trabalho também propõe uma tradução da peça para o português brasileiro e é dividido em três capítulos com o objetivo de: 1) apresentar a peça e as discussões que circundavam o contexto de sua criação, assim como a recepção da peça por jornais e estudiosos literários; 2) apresentar uma breve história da criação do teatro nacional irlandês a partir da fundação do Irish Literary Theater em 1897 pelo dramaturgo e poeta W.B. Yeats e comparar a fundação da Companhia de Teatro Field Day, além de situar Translations dentro da tradição iniciada no século XIX. Ademais, o segundo capítulo também trata sobre a criação literária na Irlanda e a relação de escritores com a língua de produção, inglês ou irlandês, tentando traçar comparações entre estes e os personagens da peça; 3) apresentar traduções da peça para o irlandês, grego, italiano e português brasileiro assim como apresentar reflexões sobre a tradução aqui proposta. O presente estudo se utiliza de teorias sobre estudos irlandeses de teóricos como Declan Kiberd, teóricos do teatro como Christopher Murray, Scott Boltwood, além dos textos publicados pela própria companhia Field Day. Também foram utilizadas extensivas pesquisas em jornais irlandeses e colunas de escritores no que tange a língua de criação. A base bibliográfica utilizada é variada a fim de que se possa chegar ao objetivo deste estudo: apresentar uma leitura em que Translations não seja lida como a morte da língua irlandesa, mas como o renascimento de uma língua que incorpora a língua inglesa, formando uma terceira língua de criação para a arte literária irlandesa.
First staged in 1980 in Derry, Northern Ireland, by the Field Day Theater Co., Translations is considered a milestone in the history of Irish theater, bringing up various interpretations and analysis, from post-colonial to language studies. The present research aims at studying language as a tool in the crafting of a national art in Ireland, especially in the foundation of a theater and in the creation of a literary tradition, presenting Translations as a metaphor for this process. This study presents a possibility for the translation of the play and is divided in three main parts: 1) a presentation of the play and the discussions surrounding the time of its creation as well as the reception of critics and scholars; 2) a brief presentation of the history of the Irish national theater starting by the foundation of the Irish Literary Theater in 1897 by W.B. Yeats, and a comparison with the foundation of the Field Day Theater Company where their first production, Translations, stands in the tradition started in late 19th century. Besides that, the second part also presents some periods in Irish literature and the relation between writers and the language of production: English or Irish, comparing this relationship to the one found amongst characters in the play; 3) analysis of the translations the play has received to Irish, Greek, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese as well as reflections on the process of translating the play. The following study uses theories in Irish studies such as the ones by Declan Kiberd, theater scholars such as Christopher Murray and Scott Boltwood and texts published by Field Day. Newspapers columns and articles were also researched for this study, especially when concerning the language of literary production in Ireland. The main objetive of this study is to present a reading of the play that does not refer to the death of a language, but to the rebirth of a new Irish language incorporated in the English language, a third language used in the creation of Irish art.

Hem och förskola är ett av läroplanens områden där avsevärda revideringar har införts. Dessa revideringar har medfört att diskussionerna kring föräldrasamverkan har satts igång i förskoleverksamhet. Därför har vi valt att vårt examensarbete skall handla om det här ämnet. Syftet med vår undersökning är att undersöka hur pedagoger och föräldrar resonerar kring samverkan i förskolan. Frågeställningar är:Hur resonerar pedagoger kring föräldrasamverkan samt vilka strategier använder de för att skapa förutsättningar för föräldrars delaktighet och inflytande?Hur ser föräldrar på sina möjligheter till inflytande i förskolans verksamhet? I denna undersökning har vi använt oss av kvalitativa intervjuer. Tre pedagoger och tre föräldrar har intervjuats. Pedagogerna anser att förskolan och hemmet kompletterar varandra. Undersökningen visar att pedagogerna använder sig av en rad strategier för att utveckla engagemang hos föräldrarna i verksamheten. Föräldrar ser olika på sina möjligheter till delaktighet i verksamheten. Dilemmat som visar sig i vår undersökning är motsägelsen mellan vad pedagogerna säger om föräldrasamverkan och mellan hur föräldrar upplever sina möjligheter till inflytande och delaktighet.

This thesis is an evaluation of the political career of Brian Faulkner, the last Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, and assessment of its successes and failures. A comprehensive survey of Faulkner has not been produced since his 1978 autobiography. The research traces Faulkner's upbringing and education and identifies the factors which shaped his personality and, later, his political life. The thesis examines the origins of Faulkner's political career and the steps he took to prepare the ground for his entry into politics. It surveys his election to the Northern Ireland House of Commons in 1949 and his rise through the ranks of the Unionist Party. It evaluates his performance in the key cabinet roles of Minister of Home Affairs, Commerce and Development. During these crucial years, Faulkner established himself as an energetic and competent executive but also as a divisive figure within the Unionist Party. His dysfunctional relationship with Prime Minister Terence O'Neill is examined in detail as well as the impact this would have on the stability of the Northern Ireland Government. Faulkner's successes and failures during his short Prime Ministerial term between 1971 and 1972 are set in context and assessed in depth - the failure of his attempts to reform the Stormont system, the introduction of internment and the collapse of the Northern Ireland Government in March 1972. His political revival and instrumental role in the establishment of the power sharing Executive of 1974 are set against its downfall in the midst of the Ulster Worker's Council strike. Faulkner's errors of judgement at Sunningdale are revisited in an assessment of the period. The research sets Faulkner's political career in context and concludes that, while his career ended in failure, . he showed considerable foresight and determination in achieving his most cherished political objective - the preservation of the union.

An esthetically pleasing approach to Brian De Palma's cinematographic work. The issue revolves around editing aesthetics and image violence. First, the text questions the cutting mode favored by Brian De Palme, stressing the importance of sequence-shot and split screen. The use of sequence-shot is in particular brought by the issue of lack of vision, a phenomenon considered as central. A second point of this thesis is devoted to the study of the characters. Anti-hero characters, drop outs. Emphasis is particularly placed on the female body. And voyeuristic gaze returns to the issue of cutting by Brian De Palma. How does Brian De Palma use eyes to see violence ? What is the meaning of « looking » to Brian De Palm a? How are De Palma's voyeuristic elements constructed from film language ? À partir d’une étude des esquisses de deux œuvres, Kurze Schatten II (1983-89) et Terrain (1992), la présente thèse démontre comment cette complexité constitue le moyen choisi par le compositeur pour réactualiser des catégories traditionnelles, tant dans le domaine des hauteurs que dans celui du rythme et de la forme. Il apparaît également que la complexité sert des enjeux esthétiques précis : par son impact psychologique sur l’interprète, elle investit la musique de Ferneyhough d’une véritable force dramatique, tout en permettant au compositeur de déployer avec une grande liberté les ‘figures’ qui constituent un élément essentiel de sa pensée. Après avoir abordé également les contraintes que présente une telle complexité, on montrera comment l’intérêt de Ferneyhough pour la philosophie de Walter Benjamin se trouve, lui aussi, intimement lié à la complexité de sa musique
The work of the English composer Brian Ferneyhough (born in 1943) has never stopped arousing impassioned criticisms which, regrettably, are mostly confined to superficial comments on the complexity of his scores. From a study of the sketches of two works, Kurze Schatten II (1983-89) and Terrain (1992), the present thesis seeks to demonstrate how this complexity constitutes the means chosen by the composer to update traditional categories, in terms of pitch as much as rhythm and form. It also seems that the complexity serves precise aesthetic issues: by its psychological impact on the interpreter, it invests Ferneyhough's music of a real dramatic force, while allowing the composer to deploy with great freedom the 'figures' which are such an essential element of his thought. After having approached the constraints which such a complexity presents, the thesis will show how Ferneyhough's interest for Walter Benjamin's philosophy is, too, closely connected to the complexity of his music

Sveriges riksdag har antagit 16 nationella miljökvalitetsmål. Miljömålsarbetet kan ses som en del av de insatser som krävs för att vi ska skapa en hållbar utveckling, vilken är en målsättning som ska genomsyra hela vårt samhälle. Myndigheter har tilldelats ansvaret för att de nationella miljömålen implementeras, men att målen nås är hela samhällets ansvar. I denna avhandling analyseras de kommunikativa villkoren i det svenska miljömålsarbetet. Studien bygger till stor del på erfarenheter som kommit till uttryck i de fokusgruppsintervjuer som genomförts med miljömålsansvariga tjänstemän på centrala, regionala samt kommunala myndigheter. Såväl politiska dokument som myndighetsrapportering har analyserats och satts i relation till tjänstemännens erfarenheter. Utifrån teorier om målstyrning, implementeringsprocesser och kommunikation i sociala system analyseras sedan kommunikativa barriärer och broar, hur de visar sig och kan förklaras. Avhandlingen visar att det finns kommunikationsbarriärer men också broar i miljömålsarbetet. När nya mål och beslut ska omsättas i etablerade organisationer uppstår kommunikationsbarriärer både inom myndigheter och i kommunikationen med andra aktörer i samhället. Att implementera beslut om ett nytt målstyrningssystem i en komplex omvärld med dess ekologiska såväl som sociala system är ingen friktionsfri process. Olika systemkoder som är i bruk kan förklara en del av problematiken, men även otydlighet i målsystem och bristande resurstilldelning. En utmaning inför framtiden blir att skapa information som ger resonans och skapar mening i olika sociala system och därigenom bidrar till möjligheterna att nå de nationella miljökvalitetsmålen.
In 1999, the Swedish Parliament introduced a new management by objectives (MBO) approach to sustainable development politics with the adoption of 15 national environmental quality objectives, ambitious objectives that are to be achieved within 20 years. Overall responsibility for implementing and evaluating the environmental objectives at the national level is assigned to central agencies but also for business and the public. This dissertation analyses the communicative conditions within the environmental objectives implementation process. The analysis in this study has a social system theoretical approach. The system with National Environmental Quality Objectives has both pros and cons. The National Environmental Quality Objectives has been difficult to communicate in established organisations as well as different sector agencies and departments. A challenge for the future is to adjust information and communication to a differentiated society on purpose to get resonance and understanding about the efforts needed to fulfil the National Environmental Objective’s achievement.

Utifrån Tranarpsbron och den massolycka som inträffade på bron den 15 januari 2013, studeras och analyseras möjligheter till ekonomisk lönsamhet och förebyggande av framtida halkolyckor genom att använda geoenergi för uppvärmning. Faktorer som påverkar energibehovet för uppvärmning av broar studeras också, samt vilka broar i Sverige som kan vara lämpliga för en installation av ett geoenergisystem. De metoder som har använts i detta arbete är: intervjuer, litteraturstudier, samt program för modellering (CoupModel) och design (EED 3). De faktorer som påverkar uppvärmningsbehovet för en bro med syfte att hålla dess yttemperatur över 0°C är, bland andra, omgivande vindar, daggpunkt, yt- och lufttemperatur samt brons energibalans och termiska egenskaper. Genom att ta hänsyn till dessa faktorer vid dimensionering av ett geoenergisystem kan antalet tillfällen då yttemperaturen understiger fryspunkten minimeras. Kostnaden för ett geoenergisystem på Tranarpsbron beräknas till omkring 51 miljoner kronor, utan moms. Endast borrhålslagret kostar omkring 37 miljoner kronor. Om jordmäktigheten i borrhålslagret varit mindre och berggrunden kristallin hade kostnaden sannolikt varit avsevärt lägre. Kostnaden för systemet borde dock kunna reduceras genom att mer energi lagras från den intilliggande Rönneån, färre borrhål skulle då behövas. Ett geoenergisystem för Tranarpsbron är förmodligen ändå inte ekonomiskt försvarbart, dels på grund av den höga investeringskostnaden och dels på grund av att endast en liten kostnadsbesparing görs för utebliven aktiv vägsaltning på bron. Dessutom tillkommer extra kostnader vid brounderhåll. Sannolikheten att investeringskostnaden för systemet ska kunna återbetalas som följd av färre trafikolyckor är också låg eftersom Tranarpsolyckan är den enda vinterrelaterade trafikolyckan som har inträffat på bron. Lämpligare är att anlägga ett geoenergisystem under nybyggnation eller renovering av broar, eftersom kantbalkar och räcken då inte riskerar att bytas ut efterhand, och på befintliga broar där det finns ett stort problem med halt väglag. Detta förutsätter att geologin i området är lämplig och att det inte är alltför tätbebyggt. Olyckan på Tranarpsbron hade förmodligen kunnat undvikas om bron varit uppvärmd med geoenergi vid olyckstidpunkten, eftersom olycksorsaken var plötslig blixthalka och oaktsam körning. Å andra sidan är det inte säkert att ett geoenergisystem alltid kan förhindra att yttemperaturen på en bro understiger noll grader. Antalet trafikolyckor och trafikköer samt de kostnader som de orsakar kan minskas om traditionell halkbekämpning ersätts med uppvärmning av geoenergi. Förmodligen kan ytterligare kostnadsbesparingar uppnås genom en minimering av den miljöpåverkan som traditionell halkbekämpning annars medför.
Based on Tranarpsbron and the mass accident that occurred on the bridge January 15, 2013, the potential for economic viability and the prevention of future winter related traffic accidents by using geothermal energy for heating is studied and analyzed. Factors affecting the energy needed for heating and which bridges in Sweden that may be suitable for an installation of a geothermal energy system are also being studied. The methods used in this work are: literature studies, interviews, and software for modeling (CoupModel) and design (EED 3). Factors affecting the need for heating a bridge with the aim of keeping the surface temperature above 0°C are, among others, its energy balance, thermal characteristics of the bridge, ambient winds, dew point, surface temperature, and air temperature. By taking these factors into account when designing a geothermal energy system, the number of occurences when the surface temperature falls below the freezing point are minimized. The cost of a geothermal energy system on Tranarpsbron is estimated to be around 51 MSEK, excluding VAT. The costs related to the boreholes are approximately 37 MSEK, excluding VAT. If the soil depth for the boreholes had been less and the bedrock crystalline, the cost would probably have been considerably lower. The cost of the system might however be reduced by storing more energy from the Rönne river, less boreholes would then be needed. A geothermal energy system on Tranarpsbron will probably not be economically viable considering the high investment cost and the very small saving of costs related to the reduced need for the deicing of the bridge. In addition, costs for bridge maintenance are increased. The probability for a return of investment for the geothermal energy system as a consequence of avoided traffic accidents is also low considering that only one winter related traffic accident has occurred on the bridge so far. It is more appropriate to install geothermal energy systems during the construction or renovation of bridges, thus avoiding the need for replacement of edge beams and railings, or on existing bridges with problematic winter road conditions. This assumes that the geology of the area is appropriate and that the area is not too urbanized. The accident on Tranarpsbron had probably been avoided if the bridge had been heated with geothermal energy at the time of the accident, given that the cause of the accident was sudden black ice and negligent driving. However, a geothermal energy system is not likely to always prevent surface temperatures below zero. The number of traffic accidents, traffic jams, and related costs can be reduced as a consequence of traditional deicing being replaced with heating by a geothermal energy system. Substantial additional cost savings can probably be made as a consequence of minimized environmental impact of traditional deicing.

Mobil Intensivvårds Grupp (MIG) är en relativt ny företeelse i Sverige, det har funnits i cirka 5 år, men forskning visar att den startades upp ungefär fem år tidigare i Australien. Det har även framkommit att efter MIGs konsultativa införande på sjukhus, har patienternas överlevnad påverkats till det bättre, patienternas ”outcome” påverkas på ett positivt sätt och liv kan ibland räddas. Att som sjuksköterska på vårdavdelning vårda en patient med sviktande vitala funktioner skapar en otrygghet och en stress som skapar en försämrad arbetsmiljö och därmed vårdmiljö. Syftet med studien är att genom en kvalitativ innehållsanalys undersöka på vilka sätt MIG påverkar vården. Metoden som använts i denna studie är en litteraturstudie där femton artiklar inkluderats och bearbetats. Resultatet visar att MIG har en betydelsefull roll i att främja kommunikationen och bygga broar mellan intensivvårdsavdelningar (IVA) och vanliga vårdavdelningar. MIG gör även avdelningssjuksköterskorna tryggare i sin yrkesroll, något som i sin tur givetvis gagnar patienterna. MIG kan ses som något av en spindel i nätet på sjukhuset, de knyter kontakter och förmedlar information mellan olika instanser. Respekten för MIG är stor, de har mångas förtroende och ses som en mycket stor resurs, som i och för sig kostar pengar, men som ger än mer vinster tillbaka. Det är viktigt att den som besitter kunskap bemöter den som rådfrågar med respekt och ödmjukhet, här har MIG ytterligare funktion att fylla vilket gör att broarna stärks än mer mellan avdelningarna.

This study analyses the borderline zone that 77 Million Paintings, from Brian Eno (United Kingdom, 1948), is in. The art work presents itself in different platforms: software, DVD, audiovisual installation and urban art. The research focuses on reading the work’s poetics that are addressed in spaces in between different languages, senses and technologies. The art work is built with a recombinant language system which makes images and sound montages in different platforms. 77 Million Paintings is presented in various countries between the years 2006 and 2016. The study analyses the poetics and communication process and the sensual stimulus as well. A reflection is made about the choices and path made by Brian Eno in the creation of this art work. Been present in the experimental and popular worlds, the artist’s involvement with music contaminates his creation in another fields. It is possible to recognize music traces in the image language from 77 Million Paintings, and the opposite can be observed too, when the image contaminates sound as well. The analysis is constructed through the extremities way method, from Christine Mello (2016). The identification of the poetics procedures of deconstruction and contamination forms the study of the blurred borderlines between the worlds of Brian Eno and 77 Million Paintings. About the contamination between different senses, Sérgio Basbaum (2002) ideas are used in the reading of the synesthesia’s work. To the analysis about the emergent system of the art work, Bill Seaman (2010) gives basis to the reflection about 77 Million Paintings software and it’s aesthetic results
O presente estudo analisa a zona fronteiriça em que 77 Million Paintings, de Brian Eno (Reino Unido, 1948), está inserida. Este trabalho artístico se apresenta em diferentes plataformas: software, DVD, instalação audiovisual e intervenção urbana. A pesquisa tem como foco a leitura das poéticas da obra, que se insere em espaços intersticiais de diferentes linguagens, estesias e tecnologias. A proposta artística se forma através de um sistema de linguagem recombinatória que realiza montagens de imagens e sons em diferentes plataformas. 77 Million Paintings foi apresentada em diversos países entre 2006 e 2016. Analisam-se as poéticas e os processos comunicacionais nos estímulos sensoriais proporcionados pelo software, bem como é realizada uma reflexão a respeito das escolhas e caminhos poéticos feitos por Brian Eno na criação dessa obra. Com presença no mundo experimental e popular, o forte envolvimento do artista com a música contamina sua criação em outros campos. É possível reconhecer traços do campo musical na linguagem imagética de 77 Million Paintings, assim como o contrário, quando o campo da imagem contamina a linguagem sonora. A análise é construída através do caminho de leitura das extremidades, proposta por Christine Mello (2016). A identificação dos procedimentos poéticos de desconstrução e contaminação embasam o estudo das relações de fronteiras borradas dos mundos de Brian Eno e 77 Million Paintings. No desenvolvimento a respeito das contaminações entre os sentidos, as ideias de Sérgio Basbaum (2002) respaldam a leitura das sinestesias presentes no trabalho artístico. Para a leitura sobre o sistema de comportamento emergente da proposição artística, Bill Seaman (2010) dá embasamento à reflexão sobre o software 77 Million Paintings e seus desdobramentos estéticos

La présente étude propose d'approcher la pratique sculpturale de l'artiste américain Brian Dettmer. Désarticulés, scellés avant d'être soigneusement découpés, les livres qui constituent la matrice de son travail échangent leur aspect traditionnel contre des formes inusitées n'ayant de cesse de subvertir les propriétés structurelles et esthétiques de l'objet. Résolument délinquants, ces ouvrages altérés, encore aujourd'hui marqués de l'empreinte du premier codex, voient leur caractère survivant ouvrir à un questionnement sur le rapport que nous entretenons avec le livre à l'ère du numérique. Une relation conflictuelle, oscillante, qui sous-tend la démarche de Dettmer dont le discours, indissociable de sa pratique, porte à considérer la forme livresque tel le symptôme de changements socioculturels profonds. Tressant anthropologie, philosophie et sociologie, l'enjeu de cette recherche multidisciplinaire est de mettre au jour les chemins de pensée empruntés par l'artiste pour instaurer un dialogue entre l'objet-livre et l'environnement informationnel dématérialisé qui lui disputerait son statut de gardien de la connaissance. C'est donc par une attention accordée aux propos de Dettmer, à la matérialité de ses sculptures et aux effets épistémologiques qu'elles induisent que notre analyse tente de donner corps à cette rencontre entre deux dispositifs du savoir.
This study focuses on the sculptural practice of Brian Dettmer. Disarticulated, sealed prior to being carefully carved, the books at the center of the artist’s practice forego their traditional aspect and take on strange forms that relentlessly subvert the structural and esthetical proprieties of the object itself. Definitely delinquent while still bearing to this day the imprint of the first codex, these altered objects, through the survival of their fundamental quality, question the relationship we have with books in the digital age. Conflictual, oscillating, this relationship underlies the process of the artist, whose own discourse, always tightly related to his practice, sees in the book format a symptom of deep sociocultural changes. Drawing from anthropology, philosophy and sociology, this multidisciplinary study intends on revealing the pathof thought used by Dettmer in his effort to establish a dialogue between the “object-book” and the dematerialized informational environment, the latter contending the former’s claim to the guardianship of knowledge. Through a careful consideration of the artist’s commentaries, the materiality of his sculptures and the epistemological effects they induce, our study ultimately explores the encounter between these two different devices of knowledge.
