Abstract:

Stenichnini of the Nearctic region include twelve genera, of which two are cosmopolitan, two Holarctic, and eight are known only in North America. Morphological structures and taxonomic placement of most of them have been subjects of recent studies, with exception of Brachycepsis Brendel and Taphroscydmus Casey. Because the depository of the type material of the type species of Brachycepsis, B. fuchsii Brendel, remains unknown, Brachycepsis is redescribed and its diagnosis is emended based on examination of B. pacifica Casey. Although similar to Stenichnus Thomson and Parascydmus Casey, Brachycepsis shows unique characters that justify its separate placement. The depository of the type material of the sole species included in Taphroscydmus also remains unknown, and no other specimens that can be unambiguously attributed to this genus are available. Comparisons of the original description and subsequent redescriptions by Mannerheim and Casey reveals that the latter authors might have dealt with misidentified specimens. The true identity of Taphroscydmus remains unclear (although it may be identical with Brachycepsis), and it is currently not possible to unambiguously identify this genus. All Nearctic genera of Stenichnini are briefly reviewed, with characters important for identification discussed. An identification key to Nearctic genera (excluding Taphroscydmus) is given.

The most common permittivity function models are compared and identifying the best model for further studies is desired. For this study, simulations using several different models and an analytical analysis on a practical surface Plasmon structure were done with an accuracy of∼94.4% with respect to experimental data. Finite element method, combined with dielectric properties extracted from the Brendel-Bormann function model, was utilized, the latter being chosen from a comparative study on four available models.

Replies are given to comments, questions, and objections to The Appearance of Ignorance. The reply to Robin McKenna focuses mainly on his questions of whether, with the skeptical argument I’m focused on, a strong enough appearance of ignorance is generated to require an account of that appearance, and whether, to the extent that we do need to account for that appearance, we might do so without contextualism by adopting a solution proposed by Ernest Sosa. The reply to Michael Blome-Tillman focuses mainly on a counterexample he offers to my account of the operation of the “Rule of Sensitivity.” The reply to Elke Brendel focuses mainly on objections to contextualism from the phenomena of disagreement and retraction. The reply to Peter Baumann concerns several of his comments about my treatment of the Harman lottery puzzle.

Abstract:

Parametric modeling provides a mean of deeper understanding to the properties of materials. Dielectric function is one of the key parameters which can provide information on the dielectric nature of a thin film or bulk materials. It can be obtained by modeling the material using appropriate existing, new or modified models. In our work, we utilized existing Brendel and Drude models to extract the optical constants from spectrophotometric data of fabricated undoped and niobium doped titanium oxide thin films. The individual contributions by the two models were studied to establish influence on the dielectric function. The effect of dopants on their influences was also analyzed. Results indicate a minimal contribution from the Drude term due to the dielectric nature of the undoped films. However as doping levels increase, the rise in the concentration of free electrons favors the use of Drude model.

Abstract:

Recent experimental results based on the digital image correlation technique (U. Eitner, M. Köntges, R. Brendel, Solar Energy Mater. Solar Cells, 2010, 94, 1346–1351) show that the gap between solar cells embedded into a standard photovoltaic laminate varies with temperature. The variation of this gap is an important quantity to assess the integrity of the electric connection between solar cells when exposed to service conditions. In this paper, the thermo-elastic deformations in photovoltaic laminates are analytically investigated by developing different approximate models based on the multilayered beam theory. It is found that the temperature-dependent thermo-elastic properties of the encapsulating polymer layer are responsible for the deviation from linearity experimentally observed in the diagram relating the gap variation to the temperature. The contribution of the different material constituents to the homogenized elastic modulus and thermal expansion coefficient of the composite system is also properly quantified through the definition of weight factors of practical engineering use.

Laborchemische Parameter des Kupferstoffwechsels weisen außer auf nicht relevante Normabweichungen auch auf andere Störungen im Kupferstoffwechsel hin.Neben bekannten Erkrankungen wie den Morbus Menkes, das Occipital Horn Syndrom (OHS), die Indian childhood cirrhosis (ICC) und den Coeruloplasminmangel werden neu entdeckte Störungen berücksichtigt. Dazu gehören das MEDNIK-Syndrom, das Huppke-Brendel-Syndrom und der Chaperonmangel CCS. Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt stellen alterskorrelierte Differenzialdiagnosen des kindlichen Ikterus und der Anämie sowie extrapyramidalmotorischer Bewegungsstörun-gen dar. Der Kayser-Fleischer-Kornealring wird als klassische ophthalmologische Manifestation relativiert. Mit der neu beschriebenen Manganspeichererkrankung besteht eine weitere seltene Metallstoffwechselstörung, die eine dem Morbus Wilson ähnliche Symptomatik hat.Wie diese Übersicht zeigt, ordnet sich der Morbus Wilson in ein weites Spektrum internistischer und neurologischer Krankheitsbilder mit Ikterus, Anämie und EPS ein. Auch neu entdeckte Krankheitsbilder des Mangan- und Kupferstoffwechsels sind relevant.

Abstract Histories of progressive musical politics in mid-nineteenth-century Germany often center on the writings of Richard Wagner and Franz Brendel, relegating contributors such as the feminist and author Louise Otto (1819–95) to the periphery. However, Otto's lifelong engagement with music, including her two librettos, two essay collections on the arts, and numerous articles and feuilletons, demonstrates how one contemporary woman considered the progressive movements in music and in women's rights to be interrelated. A staunch advocate of Wagner, Otto contributed to numerous music journals, as well as her own women's journal, advising her female readers to engage with the music of the New German School. In the context of the middle-class women's movement, she saw music as a space for female advancement through both performance and the portrayals of women onstage. Her writings offer us a glimpse into the complex network of Wagner proponents who also supported women's rights, at the same time providing evidence for what some contemporary conservative critics saw as a concomitant social threat from both Wagnerian musical radicalism and the emancipated woman.

Auf diese und weitere im Zusammenhang stehende Fragen geht der vorliegende Sammelband ein und reflektiert die Deutschdidaktik im Hinblick auf die neu entstehenden (und bereits vorhandenen), gesellschaftlich-kulturellen Praxen. Er folgt auf das Symposion Kulturelle Dimensionen sprachlichen Lernens, das 2016 in Ludwigsburg stattfand. In der Einleitung werden die zwei Schlüsseltermini Inszenierung und Kultur(en), die bereits im Titel des Bandes aufscheinen, durch die Herausgebenden Ulf Abraham und Ina Brendel-Perpina begriffstheoretisch erläutert, nicht zuletzt deshalb, weil sie häufig unscharf und so auch im Alltagsdiskurs Verwendung finden. Die Einleitung dient den folgenden Beiträgen als Basis und bettet den Sammelband kulturwissenschaftlich ein. Vorweggenommen sei, dass in der Einleitung dem Kulturbegriff mehr Beachtung gegeben wird; der Inszenierungsbegriff wird im Vergleich dazu kürzer abgehandelt. Das Kulturverständnis, das dem Band zugrunde liegt, geht von der „Verschiedenartigkeit und Gleichwertigkeit von Kulturen und kulturellen Ausdrucksformen [aus]“, da dies die Möglichkeit gebe, möglichst viel von dem zu berücksichtigen, was aktuell und auch zukünftig die Sprach- und Medienkultur beeinflussen und prägen werde (10). Abstract:

Data from cytological and genetic mapping studies suggest that maize arose as a tetraploid. Two previous studies investigating the most likely mode of maize origin arrived at different conclusions. Gaut and Doebley [7] proposed a segmental allotetraploid origin of the maize genome and estimated that the two maize progenitors diverged at 20.5 million years ago (mya). In a similar study, using larger data set, Brendel and colleagues (quoted in [8]) suggested a single genome duplication at 16 mya. One of the key components of such analyses is to examine sequence divergence among strictly orthologous genes. In order to identify such genes, Lai and colleagues [10] sequenced five duplicated chromosomal regions from the maize genome and the orthologous counterparts from the sorghum genome. They also identified the orthologous regions in rice. Using positional information of genetic components, they identified 11 orthologous genes across the two duplicated regions of maize, and the sorghum and rice regions. Swigonovaet al. [12] analyzed the 11 orthologues, and showed that all five maize chromosomal regions duplicated at the same time, supporting a tetraploid origin of maize, and that the two maize progenitors diverged from each other at about the same time as each of them diverged from sorghum, about 11.9 mya.

Rezultati istraživanja mogu da daju doprinos izgradnji imidža Novog Sada. Metodologija koja je korišćena u radu jeste kombinovana metodologija studije slučaja gde je analizirana situacija jednog grada, plus metoda merenja glavnih determinenti grada putem Metodologije brend heksagona.
