Abstract:
The type IIA nonsupersymmetric meta-stable brane configuration consisting of three NS5-branes, D4-branes and anti-D4-branes where the electric gauge theory superpotential has a quartic term for the bifundamentals besides a mass term is constructed. By adding the orientifold 4-plane and 6-plane to this brane configuration, we also describe the intersecting brane configurations of type IIA string theory corresponding to the meta-stable nonsupersymmetric vacua of corresponding gauge theories.

Abstract:
We study Myers' world volume effective action of coincident D-branes. We investigate a system of N0D0-branes in the geometry of Dp-branes with p = 2 or p = 4. The choice of coordinates can make the action simplified and tractable. For p = 4, we show that a certain pointlike D0-brane configuration solving equations of motion of the action can expand to form a fuzzy two-sphere via magnetic moment effect without changing quantum numbers. We compare noncommutative D0-brane configurations with dual spherical D(6 - p)-brane systems. We also discuss the relation between these configurations and giant gravitons in 11 dimensions.

We construct the type IIA nonsupersymmetric meta-stable brane configuration consisting of (2k+1) NS5-branes and D4-branes where the electric gauge theory superpotential has an order (2k+2) polynomial for the bifundamentals. Abstract:
We consider a toy model with flat thin branes embedded in a five-dimensional Weyl integrable manifold, where the geometric Weyl scalar provides the material that constitute the brane configurations. The brane configuration is similar to the Randall–Sundrum model. However, it is found that the massless graviton is localized on the brane with negative tension. So, in order to solve the gauge hierarchy problem, our world should be confined on the positive tension brane, and this is crucial to reproduce a correct Friedmann-like equation on the brane. The spacings of graviton mass spectrum are very tiny, but these massive gravitons are hidden in low energy experiments because they are weakly coupled with matter on the brane.

Starting from an [Formula: see text] supersymmetric electric gauge theory with the multiple product gauge group and the bifundamentals, we apply Seiberg dual to each gauge group, obtain the [Formula: see text] supersymmetric dual magnetic gauge theories with dual matters including the gauge singlets. Then we describe the intersecting brane configurations, where there are NS-branes and D4-branes (and anti-D4-branes), of type IIA string theory corresponding to the meta-stable nonsupersymmetric vacua of this gauge theory. We also discuss the case where the orientifold 4-planes are added into the above brane configuration. Next, by adding an orientifold 6-plane, we apply to an [Formula: see text] supersymmetric electric gauge theory with the multiple product gauge group (where a single symplectic or orthogonal gauge group is present) and the bifundamentals. Finally, we describe the other cases where the orientifold 6-plane intersects with NS-brane.

For the D-branes on the SL (2,R) WZW model we present a particular choice of outer automorphism for the gluing condition of currents that leads to a special AdS2 brane configuration. This configuration is shown to be a static solution in the cylindrical coordinates, and a nonstatic solution in the Poincaré coordinates to the nonlinear equation of motion for the Dirac–Born–Infeld action of a D-string. The generalization of it gives a family of nonstatic AdS2 brane solutions. They are demonstrated to transform to each other under the isometry group of AdS3 space–time.

Abstract:
We propose a full-fledged open string framework that seems suited to study the black hole information paradox. We set up a configuration to compute the scattering amplitude of a IIB open string around a D5-brane. The D5-brane is situated at the origin of a transverse D3-brane. A string perturbation theory is employed where the geometry of the D5-brane is treated as a potential. We reason that the setup is capable of reconciling the unitary evolution of states and information loss that is measured by an observer on the D3 brane. With the configurations of these kinds, the information loss is an apparent phenomenon: it is just a manifestation of the fact that the D3-observer does not have access to the "hair" of the D5 black brane.

Abstract:
Tuttavia, studiamo dettagliatamente i modelli abeliani.
A notable class of 3d N=4 superconformal field theories admits a string theoretic realization and can be engineered using brane configurations of D3, D5 and NS5 branes, usually called Hanany-Witten (HW) configurations. The low energy dynamics of such theories have been extensively studied in the past year: a prominent role is played by mirror symmetry, a duality between theories having the same conformal fixed point in the infrared. Mirror symmetry can be thought as inherited from string theory S-duality. As observed by Gaiotto and Witten, HW setups can be generalized by adding new objects, SL(2,Z) duality walls, also called S-folds. When passing through this interface, the system undergoes a local SL(2,Z) transformation. HW setups where an S-fold inserted also admit a holographic description in Type-IIB supergravity as recently shown by Assel and Tomasiello. From a QFT side, the insertion of an S-fold manifests itself as a T[U(N)] theory where each U(N) factor in the global symmetry U(N)xU(N) is commonly gauged, thus generating a non-trivial coupling between two vector multiplets. In this sense, T[U(N)] plays the role of unconventional matter. We refer to theories where a T[U(N)]-link (or simply T-link) has been inserted as S-fold theories: they can be thought of as a generalization of usual N=4 circular quivers. It is worth to stress that only one U(N) factor of the global symmetry is manifest in the Lagrangian description of T[U(N)], whereas the other is emergent at the infrared fixed point. In this sense, a T-link adds a non-Lagrangian ingredient and studying S-fold theories turns out to be an intriguing challenge from a quantum field theory point of view. The aim of this thesis is to gain insight about S-fold SCFTs. We mainly focus on their vacuum moduli spaces, dualities and infrared supersymmetry. We study the moduli space of S-fold SCFTs using mirror symmetry as main tool. When all Chern-Simons (CS) levels are turned off, we propose that the Higgs branch of such theories can be computed performing an hyper-Kahler quotient. Moreover, we conjecture that the Coulomb branch is the same of the Coulomb branch of an effective quiver where the T-linked gauge nodes get frozen. We name this phenomenon freezing rule and we interpret as the fact impossibility of D3 branes to move in some directions when intersecting an S-duality wall. We also generalize S-fold SCFTs to more general cases where a T[G] theory appears, with G being orthogonal, symplectic as well as exceptional groups. For G a classical group, we propose that such theories are dual to HW configurations where an S-fold coexists with orientifold planes. In all these cases, we check our proposals computing the Hilbert series associated to each moduli space and checking it against mirror symmetry.  When G is non-Abelian and the CS levels are turned on, we are not able to provide a unique prescription in order to compute the moduli space in presence of a T-link. Nevertheless, we study in full details a sub-class consisting of Abelian models. Since in this case T[U(1)] is an almost empty theory with only a mixed CS term, we are able to compute the moduli space, trying to infer how a T[U(N)] theory should enter the dynamics. Finally, we study the superconformal indices of S-fold theories. Such a quantity is useful for two purposes.  The first one is to study the duality between S-fold theories with different quiver descriptions. In this context the index reveals how operators get mapped to each other under the duality.  The second purpose is to study the amount of supersymmetry possessed by the S-fold theory at low energies. In principle, the gauging of the global symmetries of a T[U(N)] theory generically breaks supersymmetry down to N=3. However, in many examples with finite N, the index showed that supersymmetry gets enhanced in the infrared.  This is also consistent with the supergravity duals, which suggest the enhancement of supersymmetry in the large N limit.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 reviews anomalies in field theories and the anomaly inflow mechanism in space-filling intersecting brane configurations. We review and discuss dynamics at the intersection domain of the I1 system (whose intersection domain is (1 + 1)-dimensional). We also present a supergravity solution of intersecting D7-branes over (5 + 1) dimensions i.e. the I5 system, and discuss their connections to the conifold in F-theory. Chapter 4 is concerned with the study of entropies of small black holes in IIB string theory, in the presence of higher derivative corrections. In chapter 5 we study D-brane inflation in the warped throat, where a D3-brane open-string modulus plays the role of the inflation. We review the computation of non-perturbative corrections to the inflation potential from holomorphically-embedded stacks of D7-branes, and derive explicit expressions for the case of two non-intersecting sets of Kuperstein embedded D7’s. We present explicit models that satisfies angular stability, and demonstrate how models with an inflation scale exceeding that of SUSY breaking are constructed.

Abstract:
We explore various interactions in D-brane configurations and their implications for the construction of phenomenologically viable string models. Initially, we investigate the scenario of parallel and perpendicular stacks of D-branes located on an orbifold singularity, as in the bottom-up construction. A supersymmetric D-brane model is presented, that has CP spontaneously broken by discrete torsion. The low energy physics is largely independent of the compactification scheme and the kahler metric has 'texture zeros’ dictated by the choice of discrete torsion. This motivates a simple ansatz for the kahler metric which results in a CKM matrix given in terms of two free parameters, hence we predict a single mixing angle and the CKM phase. The CKM phase is predicted to be close to /3.We then proceed to a discussion of a different class of models involving D-branes intersecting at arbitrary angles, and wrapping a compact internal space. Here we calculate tree level three and four point scattering amplitudes in type II string models with matter fields localised at D-brane intersections. We treat both the classical and quantum parts in detail, with the latter being computed using conformal field theory techniques developed for closed strings on orbifolds. Contributions from string states wrapping the internal space are also included. These calculations are then generalised to TV-point amplitudes, which are determined completely. Finally, we consider the application of these results to four fermion interactions. In particular, the implications for Higgs exchange in intersecting brane models is discussed.

This research aims at examining in what ways brands configure their consuming public's identity via advertising in the contemporary context. For that, it departs from observing the adverts from both competitor brands over the same period of time: the ones from Coca-Cola and the ones from Pepsi. Considering that the main product offered by those brands - soda - is very similar, sold at identical prices and whose flavour is sometimes indistinguishable for the consumer, it seems pertinent to propose the hypothesis that what determines consumption of a certain brand as opposite to the other is related to the way of characterisation and interpolation of consumers, engraved in those brands's adverts, which, in a certain manner, interferes in the choices made by individuals. Such configuring elements of the consumers's image projected by the company would have the capacity to allow sudden identification of individuals aimed at by one of the brands - and not the other. Thus, this research's main objective is to comprehend the relations that are established by brands and their public as from the observation of televisual commercials vehicled by the before-mentioned companies. So that we can better visualise such a relation, we have defined the following specific objectives: (1) analyse discursive strategies employed in televisual adverts for brand and offered product characterisation; (2) identify values put on the agenda by those brands to interpolate the consumer; (3) look for configuring threads of the consuming public summoned by both brands in their interpolation process; (4) verify configuration of the consumption surroundings of those products proposed by commercials (elements and/or situations which involve type/habit of consumption), looking forward to better understanding the public in question. The analysis's steps include: (a) description of different Coca-Cola and Pepsi televisual adverts selected to compose our research corpus; (b) identification of themes and values involved in those texts; (c) examining of manipulating figures and discursive strategies employed in the narratives; (d) description of brand discursive configuration, of consuming public and of surroundings in which that consumption occurs (procedures of figurativisation, actoralisation, spacialisation, temporalisation and tonalisation). Employed methodology is inspired by discursive semiotics developed by the Greimasian group.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the characteristics and the spreading design of the Corporate and Social Responsibility in Brand strategies. We run this research through a methodology in two steps: first, a semantic analysis of thirty companies’ CSR reports by the Cognitive Discourses analysis and secondly, interviews with professionals facing these organizational changes. The main issue in this work is the semiotic reconfiguration of brands since the emergence of CSR concept. Our conclusions led us to formulate a Semeostasy theory as the description of semiotic adaptability of organizations facing contextual factors that may to affect their legitimacy

Abstract:

Recently, Taiwanese firms know better the importance of brand and its value for facing more and more severe competition in international markets. Researchers and experts who study brand experiences from some pioneering companies find that these firms build their brand more successfully in European markets than they do in American ones. Based on the results, they suggest that those firms who want to develop their brands in the international markets should consider entering the European market first. At the same time, as the importance of Chinese market grows, some companies hope to initiate their brand strategy in China by taking advantage of same Chinese cultural heritage. Which is the best region for Taiwanese firms to set up their brand first? Europe or China? How do these firms position their branding globally? All issues are keys for enterprise’s strategy. The purpose of this study is to investigate the key factors and successful paths of own brand strategy. In order to solve the issues, this research undergo case study of 2006 top 10 Taiwanese brands firms. By conducting first hand interviews and collecting secondary information, this study attempts to draw some general framework including: What are the specific resources and elements needed when a firm developing its brand, What are the key factors for branding strategy decision and developing paths of branding strategies. Five conclusions are proposed form this study. First of all, the success of international brand lie on corporate leadership, the quality of products and services, R&D and innovation capabilities, marketing and the control of channels. Second, the firms have to strengthen their global logistics capabilities, effectively adapt to the local markets, and cultivate talents with global management capabilities. Third, Taiwan firms tend to build their brand in the American market first and Europe later. Fourth, Chinese market has become a springboard for Taiwanese firms to develop their regional or global brands. Finally, their global strategies are contingent upon the different stages of growth, which may in turn affect their developing paths.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses control design of three different brake-by-wire actuators. The brakes studied include an Electro-Hydraulic brake with pressure modulation for wheel slip control, and two different Electro-Mechanical Brake configurations that directly use electric motors to control the movement of the caliper for wheel slip control. After modeling the actuators with the use of bond graphs, a cascaded control architecture is used to control these active systems. Individual controllers are designed using Youla robust control design method. Then, a feed-forward disturbance rejection is designed and added to the loops and its effectiveness is analyzed. Finally, a one-wheel model is used to compare these brake-by-wire systems in terms of stopping distance and actuator efforts.

Abstract:
The key to success of cities having high brand-value and awareness is the configuration of successful brand structures for the participation of stakeholders into the process. Starting from this point, symmetric and sustainable communication among stakeholders is assumed to play an essential role as a prerequisite for achieving success. The key to ensuring sustainable practice of any discipline is the communication. In this regard, in infrastructure, renovation, finance, tourism, sociology and cultural studies, the symmetry and participation of all of the parties are also considered to be important in terms of communication. Alongside the theoretical framework of city branding, this chapter seeks to contribute to the literature with “Multilateral Symmetrical Communication Model,” which has been created to meet the requirements for city brands. The impact of stakeholders' interaction on the brand image, the impact of ensuring multilateral communication between both parts, and demonstrating applicability of these are the main focuses of this chapter.

Abstract:
Regenerative braking is applied only at the driven wheels in electric and hybrid vehicles. The presence of brake force only at the driven wheels reduces the lateral traction limit of the corresponding tires. This impacts the vehicle lateral response, particularly while applying the regenerative brake in a turn. In this paper, a detailed study was made on the impact of regenerative brake on the vehicle lateral response in front wheel drive and rear wheel drive configurations on dry and wet asphalt road surfaces. Simulations were done considering a typical set of vehicle parameters with the IPG CarMaker® software for different drive conditions and braking configurations along the same reference track. The steering wheel angle, yaw rate, lateral acceleration, vehicle slip angle, and tire forces were obtained. Further, they were compared against the conventional all wheel friction brake configuration. The regenerative braking configuration that had the most impact on vehicle lateral response was analyzed and response variations were quantified.

In ASME Turbo Expo 2014: Turbine Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2014-25577.

Full text
Abstract:
In the late 1970’s, Benckert and Wachter (Technical University Stuttgart) tested labyrinth seals using air as the test media and measured direct and cross-coupled stiffness coefficients. They reported the following results: (1) Fluid pre-swirl in the direction of shaft rotation creates destabilizing cross-coupled stiffness coefficients, and (2) Effective swirl brakes at the inlet to the seal can markedly reduce the cross-coupled stiffness coefficients, in many cases reducing them to zero. In recent years, “negative-swirl” swirl brakes have been employed that attempt to reverse the circumferential direction of inlet flow, changing the sign of the cross-coupled stiffness coefficients and creating stabilizing stiffness forces. This study presents test results for a 16-tooth labyrinth seal with positive inlet preswirl (in the direction of shaft rotation) for the following inlet conditions: (1) No swirl brakes, (2) Straight, conventional swirl brakes, and (3) Negative-swirl swirl brakes. The negative-swirl swirl-brake designs were developed based on CFD predictions. Tests were conducted at 10.2, 15.35, and 20.2 krpm with 70 bars of inlet pressure for pressure ratios of 0.3, 0.4, 0.5. Test results include leakage and rotordynamic coefficients. In terms of leakage, the negative-swirl brake configuration leaked the least, followed by the conventional brake, followed by the no-brake design. Normalized to the negative-swirl brake configuration, the conventional-brake and no-brake configurations mass flow rate were greater, respectively, by factors of 1.04 and 1.09. The direct stiffness coefficients are negative but small, consistent with past experience. The conventional swirl brake drops the destabilizing cross-coupled stiffness coefficients k by a factor of about 0.8 as compared to the no-brake results. The negative-swirl brake produces a change in sign of k with an appreciable magnitude; hence, the stability of forwardly-precessing modes would be enhanced. In descending order, the direct damping coefficients C are: no-swirl, negative-swirl, conventional-swirl. Normalized in terms of the no-swirl case, C for the negative and conventional brake designs are, respectively, 0.7 and 0.6 smaller. The effective damping Ceff combines the effect of k and C. Ceff is large and positive for the negative-swirl configuration and near zero for the no-brake and conventional-brake designs. The present results for a negative-brake design are very encouraging for both eye-packing seals (where conventional swirl brakes have been previously employed) and division-wall and balance-piston seals where negative shunt injection has been employed.

Abstract:
Crude oil and ethanol unit train derailments sometimes result in the release of large volumes of flammable liquids which ignite and endanger the safety of persons, property, and the environment. Current methods to reduce the probability and mitigate the consequences of High-Hazard Flammable Train (HHFT) derailments include operational speed constraints, enhanced tank car design/build requirements, improved car and track inspection and maintenance, and use of advanced braking systems. The train brake system can dissipate more energy in a derailment scenario if the brake signal propagation rate is increased, the brake force against the wheel tread is increased, or a combined approach is used. This paper describes a simplified energy conservation model used to determine the emergency braking stopping distance and energy dissipation benefits available for three advanced train braking systems. A 3×3 matrix of brake configurations was defined by three brake signal propagation rates and three car net braking ratio (NBR) values. The brake signal propagation rate was modeled for trains with conventional head-end locomotive power, pneumatic car braking, and no two-way end-of-train device (CONV); locomotive distributed power with pneumatic car braking (trailing DP); and locomotive power with electronically-controlled pneumatic (ECP) braking. Car NBR values of 10, 12.8, and 14 percent were selected to reflect the expected brake force range available from older equipment in the existing tank car fleet (10% NBR) to the maximum acceptable value for new or rebuilt cars (14% NBR). Various in-train emergency brake application scenarios for loaded unit trains were modeled while accounting for the gross effects of derailment/collision blockage forces. Empirical data from four trailing distributed power train derailment events were used to estimate an average derailment/collision blockage force (ADF) and simulate the trailing consist braking performance. The ADF results were subsequently used in a more general tank car unit train parametric study to evaluate the effects of train speed, track grade, and in-train derailment position for each brake configuration in the matrix. The simplified energy conservation model was used to 1) quantify the number of trailing consist cars expected to stop short of the derailment location and 2) compare the car-by-car energy state of each car in the trailing consist that was calculated to reach the derailment location. Results for the empirical and parametric study cases are compared graphically and observations are discussed relative to two assumed baseline brake configurations.

Abstract:
Evaluation of thermoacoustic properties of gas turbine combustion systems during the design phase is crucial to meet time to market requirements for advanced new gas turbines. During the design phase the impact of design changes on engine performance need to be assessed although testing at full scale engine configuration is not possible. In this context a 3D thermoacoustic stability code has been developed providing thermoacoustic stability of combustion systems in rig and engine environments. The code has been applied to can combustion systems utilized by SIEMENS in the latest brand the SGT5-8000H which was successfully first fired in December 2007. While the flame stabilization within can combustors can be realized in single rig systems identical to engine configurations the acoustic environment of test rig and engine will differ due to the can-to-can interaction in multi-can systems. The features of the SIEMENS code are outlined and the successful application to single can and multi can configurations is demonstrated by comparison to experimental data. This provides SIEMENS with the prediction of thermoacoustic stability of respective engine configurations.

TEST ON RESILIENCE CAPACITY OF SELF-CENTERING BUCKLING RESTRAINED BRACE WITH DISC SPRINGS. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, August 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/icass2020.p.156.

Full text
Abstract:
The properly constructed buckling restrained braces (BRBs) usually have good ductility and energy dissipation capacity and therefore can be used in braced steel frames. However, large residual plastic deformation of the BRBs deteriorates their resilience capacity and hence results in large residual deformation of the buckling restrained braced steel frames (BRBFs) under large drifts. To reduce the residual deformation of BRB while keeping good ductility and energy dissipation capacity, a new self-centering buckling restrained brace (SCBRB), letting both BRB part and self-centering part work in parallel, is proposed. The self-centering capacity of SCBRB is provided by a combination of pre-compressed disc springs, which provides restoring forces and facilitates reduction of the residual deformation of the BRB. The BRB is composed of a core steel plate brace, a restraining member formed by the circular steel tube filled with mortar, and debonding materials between them. By quasi-static tests, one self-centering buckling restrained brace specimen (SCBRB) and one pure BRB specimen were tested to mainly examine the constructional details and hysteretic behavior of SCBRB. The material and configuration details of core steel plate brace in both the SCBRB and the pure BRB are the same for comparison. The test results show that, compared with the pure BRB which still exhibits large residual deformation, the SCBRB presents a flag-shape hysteretic performance and its residual deformation decreases significantly. The hysteretic curves of both the SCBRB and the pure BRB are stable before tension fracture of plate brace due to low cyclic fatigue, and the other components remained intact.
