Abstract:
This study addressed a need to identify the effectiveness of in-branch, employee administered training programs. A comparison of various training methods and a ranking of the effectiveness of those methodologies would enable managers to make informed training design and purchase decisions. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences between four training methods as evaluated by post-training assessment scores. This study also sought to determine the following: 1) did all four methods significantly impact short term material recall?, and 2) did gender impact training effectiveness? The training methods studied were: video; study guide; video plus study guide; video and study guide plus reinforcement meeting. A control group was used to obtain a pre-training baseline. One hundred eighty two employees who worked at one of twenty randomly selected Portland, Oregon branches of a large, regional bank participated in the study. Each branch utilized one of the five randomly assigned methods in a scheduled staff meeting. After completing the training, each participant completed a post training assessment testing material recall. The control group completed the assessment without participating in training. Analysis of Variance tests were used to determine if significant differences existed between: 1) the mean scores of the control group and the training methods, 2) the mean scores of the training methods themselves, and 3) the mean scores of males and females. A significant difference was found at the .05 level between the mean scores of the control group and every training method except video. There were no significant differences between the mean scores of the four training methods. There was not a significant difference between the mean scores of males and females. There was also no significant difference in method effectiveness based on gender.

Abstract:
The research presented in this Thesis is primarily concerned with the field of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) - specifically, the business applications of the technology. The empirical problem addressed is the selection of branch banks as candidates for closure using the network of branch banks of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia in the Sydney metropolitan region as the case study. Decisions to close branches are made by the Bank on the basis of performance indicators that are essentially financial. In this research, however, an alternative approach is adopted: the problem is addressed using a set of spatial criteria. Following the deregulation of the finance industry in the 1980's and the rapid introduction of new electronic channels for delivering financial services, the major banking institutions have been engaged in a process of reorganising their networks of branch banks. The most visible manifestation of this has been the ongoing and widespread closure of branches. Selecting branch banks for closure is a typical example of a complex semi-structured multi-dimensional, multi-criteria, decision-making problem. It has been well documented in previous research that Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) models are the most appropriate ones for solving problems in this particular domain. The identification of branches for closure is also characterised by a significant spatial dimension. Decisions are based on a consideration of a number of geographical criteria and various forms of spatial analysis may be involved. An appropriate technology to assist with solving decision-making problems with a significant spatial dimension is a Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS). Most SDSS have been based on the integration of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology with analytical models that are proven to be best suited to specific decision-making problems and this is the approach adopted in this research. The prototype MCBC-SDSS (Multi-Criteria Branch Closure SDSS) developed here is based on the integration through the loose coupling of the ArcView GIS software with the Criterium DecisionPlus (CDP) software, which contains the suite of non-spatial analytical models that provide the analytical capability for solving multi-criteria problems. ArcView GIS is used as the engine that drives the system and to provide the analytical and display facilities to support the spatial data involved. Two MCDM models from the CDP software are used to support the decision-making analysis - the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Simple Multi-Attribute Rating Technique (SMART). The integration of GIS with the MCDM models is based on a considerable amount of software enhancement, interface development, and computer programming. The development of the integrated system is designed to create an intelligent and user-friendly SDSS, the application of which, from the user's perspective, is a seamless operation. The success of the MCBC-SDSS is demonstrated by its application to identify candidates for closure among the 197 branches of the CBA in the Sydney metropolitan area in 2000 - the year when the building of the database for the research had been completed. The analysis is based purely on spatial considerations that have been gleaned from a major review of the literature that previous researchers have identified as affecting branch viability and performance. A set of 17 spatial variables was used as the criteria in the MCDM models. The criteria are organised in two blocks: the first includes 9 criteria relating to the characteristics of demand for branch service in the branch trade areas ('catchment area' specific criteria) while the second includes 8 criteria relating to aspects of supply provided by the existing branches in their location ('location specific' criteria). Using the developed approach, the MCBC-SDSS has been used directly to compare alternatives against criteria, not only spatial based but also financial ones, thus providing a basis for identifying the best choices regarding branch closure. The steps in the preparation of the data and the iterative procedure for implementing the MCDM models are explained and illustrated. This involves building the initial evaluation matrix, normalising the raw criteria scores, assigning weights to the criteria, and calculating priorities. Based on these, the AHP and SMART models then calculate a decision score for each branch that is used as the basis for creating the preference ranking of the branches. In this, branches with a high rank score based on the combined weighted contribution of the 17 criteria are considered to be operationally viable. On the other hand, branches with the lowest rank scores are considered as potential candidates for closure. The preference rankings generated by the models have been tested to examine their robustness in terms of the validity of criteria and their weights used in the decision analysis. Sensitivity analysis has been conducted, the results of which show that the preference rankings are stable. Different approaches have been used to validate the initial criteria, and analyse their contribution to the ranking of branch banks for closure. These help identify critical spatial variables among the 17 initial criteria selected, and suggest that some of the criteria initially selected could be deleted from the criteria list used to generate the preference rankings without substantially affecting the results. The reasonableness of the resulting preference ranking has been further demonstrated from analyses based on changing criteria weights and alternatives. The research successfully demonstrates one of the ways of enhancing the functionality of a GIS through its integration with non-spatial analytical models to develop a SDSS to aid solving decision-making problems in the selected domain. Given that to date there has been relatively few applications of SDSS similar to that developed in this research to real world decision-making problems, the procedure adopted makes it suitable for decision-making in a range of other service business applications characterised by a significant spatial dimension and multiple outlets including shopping centres, motor car dealerships, restaurant and supermarket chains. Instead of just providing solutions, however, the SDSS-based analysis in this research can better be thought of as adding value to spatial data that forms an important source of information required by decision-makers, providing insight about the situation, uncertainty, objectives, and trade-offs involved in reaching decisions, and being capable of generating alternative scenarios based on different inputs to the models that may be used to identify recommended courses of action. It can lead to better and more effective decision-making in institutions involving multi-outlet retail and service businesses and hence enables both integrated data analysis and modelling while taking multiple criteria and decision-makers' preferences into consideration.

The bank-branch restructuring problem seeks to locate bank-branches, main- taining or closing existing branches, in order to provide the service required by its clients, at minimum total cost. This problem has not been the subject of much study, nonetheless it is a common problem that banks are faced with from time to time. We address this nonlinear problem, since economies of scale exist, by formulating it as a mixed binary, integer linear model. The model obtained can be solved by a ready-available software, such as CPLEX. However, the dimensionality problem soon becomes the issue and thus, we also propose a heuristic to solve, approximately, this problem. We have developed a local search heuristic to solve the bank-branch location and sizing problem with concave cost functions. In order to do so, we have modelled this problem as a mixed integer and binary programming model. The heuristic is based on the solution to a related linear integer programming problem. This solution is subsequently improved by iteratively applying drop and swap operations. The computational experiments performed show the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed heuristic.

This study will investigate global economic recession, which has led to the management difficult of enterprise environment as a whole, down-fall of share price, shrinkage of price value with real estate, and the worsening of assets quality which directly impacts on the banking industry. Since there are quite a number of banks within the country, each of their business and assets quality would even be more difficult to control under fierce competition. As such, if the product and service provided by banks are highly homogeneous, it would have affected the profit-making and competitiveness if there is no sufficient innovation to provide differentiated competition. Therefore, it has become most important the bank should conduct management evaluation and strategy of reform. The study would like to exploit banks that the management of establishing new branch bank to find out the advantage strategy of survival and competition for banking industry, and analyze the thoughts of reform and result with banks that establish new branch banks. Hammer & Champy(1994) pointed out that there are three non-neglectable powers as Three C, which are customers, competition, and change (楊幼蘭,1994). These three powers are good enough to drive an enterprise into a brand new scenario (王淑慧,1996) whether they stand alone or are being combined together. Drucker also noted that we are now in storming stage as the greatest challenge enterprises are confronted is that they have to constantly adapt changes which are coming from all directions. As for company executives, they should have the awareness that the critical factor for effective management is find out environmental change, and carry out organization adjust progressively so as to increase their profit-making capability using such a change (Sauser & Sauser,2002). As found from the study, the number of banks currently in the country is total 386 with 5,833 branch banks. It is found from statistics that opening of branch bank in the country has also towards M-type as though there is increase of branch banks over a hundred in the last 5 years the number of branch bank in some county and city has decreased on the contrary. No matter it is with merger or encouragement, all of the banks have, unanimously, relocated to Taipei City, Taipei County, Taoyuan County and other golden county and city when they are to establish new branch banks. As a result, the gap of distribution of financial resources is ever expanding, and under the trend of world heading towards global liberalization and internationalization, financial holding ground hope that they can make use of integration and transition mechanism to conduct integration and development. In view of the fact of the there are overtly too many domestic banks and branch banks that are highly homogenous, leading to fierce competition and comprehensive recession of the entire banking and financial industry that ends up decrease of profit. It has become critical as how they can enhance their operation efficiency and international competition so as to increase management efficiency and effectiveness. This study would like to investigate if the banking institute has followed its management objective and requirements when they establish new branch bank, if the branch location and the formulation of their management and operation strategy are suitable. Then it would analyze its advantage, value, and profit-making, and also explore the enhanced company value after the newly established businesses and value differentiation after the branch bank is set u, aside from maintaining the original businesses that bring niche profit. It is with the information of credibility institute and research as well as domestic and oversea literatures collected for compilation that will be based on to evaluate newly established branch bank and their operation guides. Then their importance and management planning will be inferred. For the time being, it is mainly to illustrate, analyze, and compare their feasibility and development of current measures with the cases of newly established branch banks. Hence, it would increase the turnover of banks competitiveness, and adjust their overt concentration and improve management so that the core skills can be learned to enhance the management competence of banking internationalization. In such a way, they can actively conduct reform, and cope with the economic expansion working in conjunction with company policy. Through integration and adjustment, bank can achieve the diversified development of their assets and businesses, and help elevate capital adequacy ratio and international competition of banking industry. As a whole, the banking industry is confronted with most intense competition. In view of the future, if branch banks can evaluate their advantages and other conditions at right time and right place as they are enrolled in the diversified and competitive market; there would be realization for global management and comprehensive management efficiency to enhance their core competitiveness. As such, it could have provided favorable financial service for enterprise to develop oversea branches, and obtained strategic interest to establish their hegemony. Aside from placing focus on management efficiency, factor of risk management is most necessary for when there is bad debt there must be mechanism for prevention against the impact. Therefore, careful and positive attitude should be employed to construe the environment and risk control for healthy enterprise management and healthy enterprise culture; on the other hand, it is important to create competitive environment and adapt to the needs of knowledge-economy in order to build up novel economic model.

Godbeer, Craig. "The learning culture in a retail bank branch network." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/257.

Full text
Abstract:
Organisations are changing rapidly due to the multitude of environmental factors and pressures with which they are faced. In order for them to remain current and competitive they need to constantly learning and adapting to these changes. Having learning entrenched into the culture of the organisation would ensure that it is always ready for change and that it is also able to move toward the state of a learning organisation. The Standard Bank of South Africa’s Retail Bank branch network was perceived as not having an adequate learning culture, as displayed by an apparent lack of focus and responsibility being taken for learning by employees. A literature review was conducted to better understand a number of fundamental concepts such as learning, culture and organisational learning, as well as the nature and meaning of what a learning culture is. The literature review was also used to identify key elements within organisations, which could be considered vital for the creation of a successful learning culture. It was these elements against which the SBSA Retail Bank branch network was to be measured against, during the course of an empirical study, to determine the nature and extent of their existing learning culture. The empirical study made use of a quantitative descriptive research design, due to the large numbers of SBSA employees involved, who were widely dispersed across the country. Two electronic questionnaires were placed on the SBSA Intranet site for one week, to cater for both managerial and non-managerial responses, and a response rate of 95% was achieved for both groups. The research data was given to Statkon, (Rand Afrikaans University’s statistical consultation department) for analysis. The results of this survey indicated that the Branch network do in fact have an established learning culture, however this needed to be further developed and improved to ensure a greater alignment to the elements identified in the literature review. Incorporating the recommendations that are proposed will assist this development and improvement of the existing learning culture further, as will by taking note of the learning culture strategy and implementation suggestions put forward. Further investigation will still be required for some of the learning culture aspects, to better understand their nature and situation, as well as their possible impact. Suggestions are also identified for possible further research, some of which relate to researching the finer relationships and trends within the SBSA Retail Bank branch network, such as demographic factors and the development of a comprehensive learning culture strategy. All of this is necessary to ensure the creating and sustaining of a learning culture that will support and facilitate the development of a learning organisation.

It has become an increasingly urgent problem for commercial banks to leverage modern management methods to apply information management, so as to improve product and service quality, guard against potential business and moral hazard, and succeed in the increasingly competitive market. This paper applies theory and methodologies in the field of information construction, reviews the status quo of commercial bank information construction, and takes X Commercial Bank of F City as an example, and put forwards suggestions for it to improve its information construction. This paper holds that X Bank should place information construction in the core place, improve its business operation information mechanism, establish risk control mechanism and strengthen its input in product innovation, so as to reduce information asymmetry, improve its response speed, reduce the internal management fee and improve management efficiency and improve the capability to guard against financial risk. This paper hopes to provide beneficial reference for X Bank in its future development, and meanwhile act as guidance for other similar commercial banks engage in information construction.

ABSTRACT Taiwan has become the member country of WTO on January 2002. When facing the impact of financial liberalization and internationalization, the way of how the banking industry exists in the competitive finance-market has become the popular issue. This research sets the banking industry as the target and studies the strategy of how the branch banks reach the operative goals by using case study method. The major conclusions are as follows: 1. After analysis of external and internal environment, the study suggests that the feasible strategy is the growth strategy. In the fixed market and product, bankers have to seek for the difference of the service. This thesis conducts empirical analyses on operating performances of financial institutions including domestic banks and foreign banks based on financial data of 53 domestic banks and 39 foreign banks between the year 2001 and 2003 with multivariable factor analysis, aiming to investigate and analyze the differences in operating performances between the two. The empirical results are as follows: 1.This study groups financial institutions into two blocks–domestic banks and foreign banks–and performs analyses on the basis thereof. As the operating performance analysis reveals, domestic banks show no obvious discrepancy from foreign banks after joining financial holding companies and becoming capable of carrying out cross-selling and provide reciprocal support among various operating resources. 2.As far as ranking results of domestic and foreign banks are concerned, only two (one domestic, one foreign) banks are listed as A Class, while 10 (two domestic, 8 foreign) as B Class, followed by 66 (42 domestic, 24 foreign) as C Class, 12 (6 domestic, 6 foreign) as D Class, and 2 (2 domestic, 0 foreign) as E Class. The results show that, on the one hand, the majority of current banking operations (including 66 banks) are still no more than average. It also indicates the fact that the overall operating quality and performances has not demonstrated obvious improvement after joining financial holding companies is worth further in-depth observations. On the other hand, a total number of 14 banks in C Class and D Class indicate that there is a lot of improvement to make in the operating constitution of banks. 3.The examination results reveal that there is no noticeable difference in liquidity, profitability, capital adequacy, efficiency, future prospects, or total score between domestic and foreign banks, demonstrating improvement in domestic banks'' operating strategy and quality after the government''s commencement in the year 2000 to take constructive measures to: 1. demand that all domestic financial institutions make sufficient provisions for warranties of bad debt, 2. lower business tax from the original 5% to 2%, with the remaining 3% for Financial Restructuring Fund, and 3. speed the merge of previously unhealthy financial institutions after financial holding companies were established.

The purpose of this research is to realize the relevance between the business strategy of Bank of Taiwan, Matsu branch and the development of local industry and to discover the difficulty in the banking operations. Through the qualitative research, the study used literature analysis, in-depth interview method to collect the data and analyze the conclusion. The major findings were as follows: 1. Disadvantages of banking development are sparse population, small land area and industry relying mainly on small scale processing of agriculture products. 2. In 1949 when the government relocating to Taiwan, for the needs of military mission the government occupied private land without signing any contract with the land owner. By 1992, with the termination of being a battlefield, Matsu government started handling land ownership registration; however, 43 years of undefined land ownership caused huge difficulty in measuring land and assigning title to land. Such situation happened to housing lands as well, and this created a plight for the bank to loan to those in financing needs. 3. According to the in-depth interview, here are five strategies: Adjust bank deposit structure, reduce capital cost and keep promoting payroll transfer and bill collection business. Expand RMB certificate deposits business. Optimize credit business, lend fund by taking Taiwan house as a collateral and implement interest rate policy to widen cost of carry. Make good use of the brand value of Bank of Taiwan to promote wealth management business. Deepen E-finance business and enhance the communication between seller, buyer, corporate finance customer and personal finance customer. Our research suggests that: 1. with the liberalization of cross-strait financial business restrictions, Matsu branch may make good use of The Mini-three-links advantage to discover potential foreign exchange clients and promote deposit, credit, payroll transfer, insurance, on-line banking and trust business through the contact with these foreign exchange clients. 2. the advantages of Matsu branch are localized sound operation and proper internal control circumstance which make it a high quality bank in this area and also the only bank in Matsu. Based on these advantages, Matsu branch is able to use the CRM system efficiently to identify corporate clients who have not applied credit business with Matsu branch and put them in potential client lists. Besides, by the relation with existing clients, it creates a higher success rate in discovering new client by improving the interaction between downstream manufactures and Matsu branch.

Application of information technology was introduced to the banking industry at an early stage. In the past, since development of information system focused on product and operation automation, the system framework was uncomplicated. As technology advances and businesses are becoming more and more competitive, banks are facing new challenges. The banking industry is gradually crossing the industry boundaries and making adjustments in order to face future trends and strategies. The survival of the banking industry relies on the customer-oriented value chain innovation and how to strengthen its basic operations by taking advantage of information technology. As a result, the study aims at exploring the issue of creating strategic opportunities with the integrated information system framework. The purpose is to enable full operation of all related entities under a coordinated, united, and consistent mechanism. Therefore, the framework of integration capability becomes the key factor of success of applying information technology. The reform in the way banks are operated is made possible by combining the banking profession and information technology. The thrust created by the strategy driven by information technology has innovated financial instruments, the operating procedure, and the internal coordination and cooperation, offering customers value-added services and increasing the bank’s strategic opportunities. Based on case study, the study analyzes and compiles to come to a conclusion of the bank’s sales channel and the contents of integrated information system. By playing the role of channel services, the business’s operating strategy is materialized to offer guidance to all relevant personnel when promoting “the integrated information system framework strategy”. The study looks at the issue of integration of the bank’s information system from the branch’s platform channel viewpoint and the integrated information system framework strategy model. The model explores the opportunity to create strategy from five main modules: “understanding information strength”, “deciding on the role of information technology in the industry’s structure”, “identifying the method information technology creates a competitive edge”, “investigating how information technology create new business”, and “developing a plan to use information technology”. In addition to the expounding of different focuses of the establishment, design and operation method of different modules, the study also believes that the exploration of integration of information technology has to unite the value of information technology with corporate activities

This study is carried out to examine the status of credit risk management at BIDV, Hai Duong branch in order to find out the problems that still exist. After analyzing the problems existing in credit risk management, the study helps to figure out the causes and the solutions to improve the efficiency of the risk management of credit activities at BIDV, Hai Duong Branch. To achieve the above research purpose, qualitative research methodis applied for this study. Direct interviewmethod is used to collect data. The interview is conducted with three groups: the group of financial experts, managers, and senior managers from BIDV; the group of managers of BIDV, Hai Duong Branch, and the group of credit officers who are working in BIDV, Hai Duong Branch. The framework used in this study focuses on the six dimensions of credit risk management. They are Establishment of appropriate credit policies; Credit manual; Credit analysis;Credit inspection and monitoring;Risk dispersion;and Risk settlement. The research results show that BIDV has developed all the six dimensions; however, the effectiveness is not yet high. Specifically, for the establishment of appropriate credit policies, the bank has issued many policies that support the credit risk management a lot such as policies of Judgment, authorize decentralization, Policy for clients, and Guaranteed properties. For Credit manual, BIDV Hai Duong Branch has adopted the ii regulations from the State Bank of Vietnam and the mother BIDV about credit management, however, it requires the branch to train more about these for staff skills to follow the regulations. For Credit analysis, there are internal credit ranking and credit information system, however, internal credit rankingis still weak as this method is based mainly on qualitative factors, and the Credit Information Center is incomplete. The Credit inspection and monitoring remains many loopholes, errors as there is conflict between the Department of Customer Relationship and the in-charge departments. For risk dispersion, credit debt still focuses on some industries, some large companies. For risk settlement, the branch faces the problem information processing and the credit team has not much experience.

The development of financial industry will influence citizens’ level of living, economic development and welfares. The financial industry as the function of intermediation can distribute limited loan fund to the most productive channel to help industry development and economic growth, so it is the important key role. Besides, establishing new branch is the base of setting the structure of bank, and also one of the important business strategy to achieve scale economy and enlarge market shares. Good or bad performance of a branch will decide the rise and decline of a bank. The number of branches are also considered as the index of strength of banks. Abstract:
Existing methodologies of bank branch performance analysis are dominated by accounting and financial measures that inherently generate information of a retrospective nature. The outcomes are a possible misleading assessment of a branch's economic viability and misguided planning decisions in reconfiguring a branch. ... This study develops three principal models for an integrated analysis of personal banking performance, based on data collected from branches of a major Australian trading bank. In conclusion, the study delivers a model of overall performance comprised of eight variables; a model of overall potential also comprised of eight variables,- and, a discriminant model comprised of five predictors and two functions with validated coefficients, and a cross-validated correct classification rate. In addition, scales developed for such constructs as customer service quality and managerial competence can be applied independent of regression analysis and discriminant analysis models. It is submitted that the findings of the study can be used in decisions concerning reconfiguring, closing, or opening branches. Furthermore, the study could assist in minimising the gap between current branch performance and branch potential, by focusing attention on the treatment of variables that are controllable by bank management.

In 2000s, the government pushed forward two steps of banking reform, which has produced abrupt change in the mindset of employees that are left behind after government bank privatization. A government bank branch general manager’s leadership has transformed from “authority” in early stage into needing to pay attention to personnel’s “feeling” at present; the said general manager’s leadership behavior must also turn to thinking of how to “cohere the organizational members’ common consensus” so as to keep promoting the growth of business achievement. The research was mainly to construct C government bank branch general manager’s leadership model from personnel’s cognitive perspective, in order to understand the influence of variables of C government bank branch general manager’s “leadership behavior” and “organizational culture” on “leadership effectiveness,” and the influence of “leadership behavior” on “organizational culture.” The research adopted questionnaire survey to collect the feelings of C government bank branch employees, whose position were bank clerk to assistant general manager, to build branch general manager’s leadership model; after sorting, the research used SPSS and AMOS statistical software, utilized confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to combine latent variable and observed variable to construct “measurement model” of structural equation modeling; besides, with the help of path analysis model, the research probed into the cause-effect relationship among latent variables to be “whole model.” Through empirical analysis, the research found that the three-dimensional Chinese leadership behavior of “monarch,” “mentor,” and “parent” indeed could positively affect leadership effectiveness and organizational culture, and “hierarchical” organizational culture and “supportive” organizational culture could really influence leadership effectiveness positively as well. Moreover, from the results of regression weighted coefficients (namely path coefficients) among dimensions, there are three research conclusions as follows: 1.The government bank branch general manager’s leadership behavior of “the role of monarch” had the most significant influencing effect in boosting “goal reaching degree” and “member satisfaction” of leadership effectiveness. 2. The government bank branch general manager’s leadership behavior of “the role of monarch” had the most significant influencing effect in boosting “supportive” organizational culture and “hierarchical” organizational culture. 3. The government bank branch’s “hierarchical” organizational culture had the most significant influencing effect in boosting “goal reaching degree” of leadership effectiveness. The research’s suggestions for C government bank branch general managers are as follows: 1.In the aspect of leadership behavior, if the government bank branch general manager would like to pursue better leadership effectiveness of “goal reaching degree,” he or she can strengthen the behavior of “the role of monarch” and “the role of mentor” ;however, he or she shall try to “quantify” performance appraisal for subordinates. 2.In the aspect of organizational culture, the branch general manager shall be able to encourage the bank employees to accept the mission with challenge. 3.In the aspect of leadership effectiveness, while pursuing “goal reaching degree,” the branch general manager shall not neglect the importance of leadership behavior of “the role of parent” on leadership effectiveness of “member satisfaction.”

The study delved into the “regional center” and “conventional branch bank” systems employed by the 43 commercial banks in the nation during the period from 2000 to 2004. Banks with net values of NT$20 Billion were chosen and ranked in scale based on their net values. Thereafter, a comparative analysis was conducted based on the operating performance. The input variables used were stockholder equity, interest payments, number of employees, and number of branch banks. The output variables employed were deposits, loans, interest earnings, and income from processing fees and charges. The study model, the Data Enveloping Analysis Method (DEA Method), measured the following aspects of each commercial bank: gross technical efficiency, net technical efficiency, efficiency of scale and return of scale. The study achieved the following findings: During the period from 2000 to 2004, among the commercial banks employing the “regional center system”, general efficiency was noted in the following banks: Cathay United Bank, Union Commercial Bank, and Chinatrust Commercial Bank. The average gross technical efficiency for the five-year period was 0.9150. On the other hand, among the banks employing the “conventional branch bank system”, general efficiency was noted in the following banks: Chiao Tung Bank, Bank of Taiwan, Land Bank, Cooperative Bank, International and Commercial Bank of China, and the China Development Industrial, Bank. The average gross technical efficiency for the five-year period was 0.9202. It is apparent that the performance of banks employing the regional center system had been less ideal and that the general performance of the conventional branch bank system was the better system. When banks were classified based on the size of their net values, a positive analysis showed that larger banks tend to have a better general efficiency performance. The data obtained through the DEA Method showed relative efficiency. In the past five years, it was noted that non-efficient banks posted very serious misspending in terms of number of employees and number of branch banks. This was especially noted in many regional banks. A cause analysis revealed that this problem was mainly due to the fact that their branch banks were mostly located in smaller towns, districts and villages. The regional center banks did not achieve the leading edge of efficiency; however in 2004, efficiency of scale entered a rapid growth stage. It is apparent that there is still room for development for the regional center system. A positive analysis of the period from 2000 to 2004 showed that regardless whether banks employed the regional center system or the conventional branch bank system models, general efficiency performances posted in 2004 were generally better. This phenomenon reflected that the nation’s economy during this period started to experience an upward development trend. The study merely analyzed the effects of the organizational restructuring of the recent years on the operating efficiency of commercial banks for the future organizational restructuring reference of commercial banks. Unfortunately, the study was limited by the aggressive efforts of banks to reduce their non-performing loans, as such efforts affected the performance of commercial banks in terms of profit performance.

This thesis combines the analysis of theories and the empirical results. We picked top 100 banks as empirical samples. This study is trying to probe into the impact of region selections and branch quantities for foreign expansion on financial performance. Nowadays, under the backgrounds of financial internationalization and large-scale, the clustering effect has already impacted the basic model of international banks. Our empirical results are divided into two views as followings: Firstly, in view of the motives and the strategies: (1) Attractiveness of the host-country: Generally, foreign banks in host-country have positive effect in economical and financial development. In addition, it may also have a significantly positive effect in the position of financial center of host-country. (2) Strategies of foreign banks: When top 100 banks located its branch in the high clustering city (herein named as “the first class city” and mainly refer to international financial center), the location has a significantlyly positive effect on foreign bank’s financial performance. However, if foreign banks expand its branch to overseas excessively, expand to the second class city (herein mainly refer to the regional financial center) and the third class city (herein mainly refer to emerging city and transitional city) at the same time, it has a significantly negative effect on foreign bank’s financial performance. Secondly, in view of financial performance: (1) Region Selection v.s. Financial Performance: The bank with the higher ROA and ROE which will select the first class city for foreign expansion, the location has a significantly positive effect on foreign bank’s financial performance. However, the foreign expansion both at the second class city and the third class city, or both at the first class city and the third class city, the region selections have a significantly negative effect on foreign bank’s financial performance. (2) Bank Scale v.s. Financial Performance: The independent variables are branch quantities and total assets. The empirical result shows when the bank located at the higher clustering city (Z1) or the medium clustering city (Z2) will have significantly positive effect on bank’s financial performance. However, the lower clustering city (Z3) has no regular effect on bank’s financial performance. Besides, total assets produce insignificant effects on bank’s financial performance.

A Study on the Operating Efficiency of the OBU Branch of Domestic Banks in Taiwan ---An Application of the Data Envelopment Analysis Abstract The Ministry of Finance, on 16 November 2001, promulgated the amendments of Article 2 and Article 5 of the ”Regulations Governing Financial Business between Banks Located in Taiwan and Chinese Mainland”. The amendments allow direct transaction between offshore banking units (OBUs) of banks located in Taiwan and banks located in Mainland China. The purposes of the new measures ate to ensure there exist effective and vigorous measures governing and managing Taiwanese investments in Chinese Mainland, and to enable capital to move freely between Taiwan and Chinese Mainland. To achieve these purposes, new measures try to, e.g., help OBUs of domestic banks develop into channels of moving capital for domestic businesses with overseas operations, create a mechanism for businesses with operations in mainland China to remit earnings back to Taiwan through OBUs of banks, mitigate the concerns of businesses about the taxation of earnings remitted from overseas. The thesis uses the methodology of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to evaluate the performance of the OBUs of 30 domestic banks. The period for the study is from 1997 to 2001. Intermediary Approach is used to determine inputs: non-interest expenses, interest expenses, net worth, and number of branches; outputs: non-interest revenue, interest revenue, total deposits, and total loans. Further, the study uses sensitivity analysis to cross-examine five alternative models to obtain the efficient unit, and analyze the most efficient units of each bank. The major findings are: 1. The newly privatized banks are less efficient than private banks, both old and new. 2. Old private banks with deposits for providing loans such as The Bank of Overseas Chinese, The Shanghai Commercial & Savings Bank, The International Bank of China are relatively more efficient. 3. New private banks with more non-interest revenues such as the Fu bon Bank (deriving revenues from security business) and Bank Sino Pac and the E. Sun Bank (deriving revenues from service charges) are relatively more efficient.

This study aims to explore the empirical experiences on the related influential factors of credit default risk on finance and tax compliance provided by national banks to the middle and small-sized enterprises. The data were collected from one of the domestic commercial banks and the samplings were accumulated from March 2006 to March 2007. There are files from five seasons for credit reference and establishing criteria for credit. From a total of 4760 cases of conforming loans, 3707 were normal interest receivable cases which is about 78%, and 1053 were non-normal interest receivable cases, accounting for about 22%. Based on the financial variables, the predicting model of financial crises was constructed and logistic regression analysis was applied in order to analyze the finance and tax compliance provided to the middle and small-sized enterprises, as well as the predictable capability regarding the incidence of financial crises after adding twelve models formed by financial variables. Consequently, the statistics show low default ratios of finance and tax compliance. In general, the goodness of fit in the entire model is not very significant. The test of significance with regard to the financial variables is not all significant. As a result, the financial report has a window dressing effect and the evaluation of standard criteria for credit cannot be made either by finance compliance or tax compliance alone.

With advances in financial technology and forces shaping the business, the financial industry has been introducing new electronic devices in response to this trend. More and more financial services will be completed by mobile banking and Internet banking. Therefore, it is important to know the considered value for leasing bank’s branches while developing digital banking capabilities and facing the inevitability of human resources being replaced by digital equipment. This research has sorted out the relevant literature on leasing and summarized the main factors influencing branch leasing. Based on the established facets and hierarchical structure, experienced staff in the banking industry and real estate experts have been invited to fill out the survey. They provide their professional views to questions related to current leasing policy and leasing policy under Bank 3.0 environment, in two phases. Then the collected surveys will be used to conduct a quantitative analysis using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). This study discovered that, no matter which circumstances we take into consideration, the current one or the one given the increased ubiquity of banking innovation, the most important factor for choosing physical branch presence is “Location”. As for sub-factors, the top three are “Central Business District”, “Transportation Convenience”, and “The Distribution of Branch Locations”; all of them ranked under “Location” facet. Therefore, we can conclude that both the financial institutions and the real estate experts believe that whether the surrounding area is a prosperous business district to reach critical mass is the primary consideration when choosing a branch presence. The public transportation is also important to provide the public with easy access. In addition, the proximity to other existing branches will be considered as well to avoid customer overlapping in the same area.

Since the business and services provided by all banks are similar, it has become important to expand new branches or integrate branch locations if a bank desires to increase its market share in such a competitive market in recent years. However, under the circumstances that the resources of the newly established branch are scarce and most of its staff members are newcomers, the strategies and actions that managers carry to achieve better performance are even more important. By using a case-study approach with resource-based view (RBV) and knowledge transfer perspectives, this paper intends to discover the resources that are most lacking in the case branch to effectively apply them, and further to examine and explore whether it is necessary to improve the operation way, how the tactics and tricks on hand can be effectively applied, and how to share and utilize the resources of cross-departmental or subsidiary companies within the group, as well as how to gain a foothold in the financial industry.
