Field, Katherine. "The Boston Residue and Clearance Scale (BRACS): criterion validity testing." Thesis, Boston University, 2013. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/12100.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M.S.)--Boston University
PURPOSE: Despite evidence that residue is the most significant problem separate from aspiration in dysphagia patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) post-radiation (Agarwal, et al., 2011), there is currently no standardized scale with which to rate residue. The purpose ofthis project is to assess the Boston Residue and Clearance Scale (BRACS), which has previously undergone initial reliability and validity testing, for criterion validity with HNC patients. METHODS: BRACS is an 11-point multidimensional scale developed to determine the severity of residue as detected during a Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES). The BRACS score is uniquely derived from three aspects: 1) amount and location of residue, 2) presence of spontaneous clearing swallows, and 3) efficacy of clearing swallows. Excellent inter-rater and test-retest reliability, internal consistency and concurrent validity were confirmed by preliminary data (Kaneoka, 2013). In order to further validate BRACS by confirming its criterion validity with HNC patients post-radiation, BRACS scores were compared to scores on other previously validated measures of dysphagia severity: 1) degree of penetration/aspiration via scores on the Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS; Rosenbek, et al., 1996), 2) quality-of-life impairment via scores on them. D. Anderson Dysphagia Inventory (MDADI; Chen, et al., 2001), and 3) diet status via scores on the Performance Status Scale for Head and Neck Cancer-Normalcy ofDiet scale (PSSHNC-ND; List, et al., 1990). Nine patients post-radiation at Boston Medical Center who have a history but are currently free of HNC underwent a FEES exam and completed the MDADI and PSSHNC-ND scales. During the FEES, patients were presented with boluses of liquid, applesauce, and cracker as tolerated. Each of the 24 total collected swallows were reviewed and assigned a PAS and BRACS score by an expert clinician. Using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, all variables were analyzed for significant associations. Discriminant analyses were also conducted between the scores to determine how accurately different combinations of variables were able to predict diet status on the PSSHNC-ND scale. [TRUNCATED]

Abstract:
During the early 1980s the Warlpiri at Yuendemu, a remote Aboriginal community in Central Australia, began their own experiments in local television and radio production. This was prior to the launch of the AUSSAT satellite in 1985 which brought broadcast television and radio to remote Australia for the first time. There was concern amongst remote Aboriginal communities, as well as policy makers, that the imposition of mass media without consultation could result in permanent damage to Aboriginal culture and language. As a result, a policy review 'Out of the Silent Land' was published in 1985 and from that developed the Broadcasting in Remote Aboriginal Communities Scheme (BRACS) which allowed communities to receive radio and television from the satellite. BRACS also provided the option to turn off mainstream media and insert locally produced material. This study of the Warlpiri at Yuendemu has found that, since the original experiments, they have enthusiastically used modern communication technology including radio, video making, locally produced television, and, more recently, on-line services. The Warlpiri have adapted rather than adopted the new technology. That is they have used modern communications technology within existing cultural patterns to strengthen their language and culture rather than to replace traditional practices and social structures. The Warlpiri Media Association has inspired other remote broadcasters and is now one of eight remote media networks that link to form a national network via the National Indigenous Media Association of Australia. The Warlpiri have actively adapted modern communication technology because it is to their advantage. The new technology has been used to preserve culture and language, to restore, and possibly improve, traditional communications and to provide employment and other opportunities for earning income. It appeals to all age groups, especially the elders who have retained control over broadcasts and it also provides entertainment.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to explore historical perspective of brass music. There is a brief history of brass bands in Britain. Furthermore, the paper examines the differences between two brass band pieces in the repertoire, A Western Fanfare by Eric Ewazen and Brass Symphony by Jan Koetsier. Both of these pieces were compared and contrasted against the author's newly composed work for brass, Two Companion Pieces for Brass Ensemble. The paper covers different techniques commonly used in brass writing and points these techniques out in all three pieces.

Abstract:
The addition of lead to the copper alloys increases its machinability and reducesthe overall production cost, despite copper being expensive, which makes achallenging task to replace lead. But the alarming effects of lead on human healthand the recycling problems has led to the increase in concern forreducing/eliminating the use of lead in brass and other copper alloys. Manymaterials are considered to replace lead in brass; silicon is one such alternative. The turned brass sample are investigated using the state of the artequipments at Halmstad University. The results obtained are controlled readingsof surface parameters and is categorized using surface imaging and mappingsoftware, Mountains Map.This thesis characterizes the lead and the lead free brass's surfaceintegrity for a certain cutting data. The study deals with the evaluation ofselection of appropriate surface integrity parameters and summarizes theappropriate combination of cutting data to maintain the surface of the ecobrass/unleaded brass on par with the leaded brass surface. The 2D and 3Dsurface parameters illustrates the surface functionality and its effect on thematerial in contact. The research results suggest a detailed methodology for the analysis ofsurface topography and a comparison exemplifying differences between the twomaterials under study. The research provides a perplexed results and forms thebasis for further investigations of the samples machined at different cutting data.Second set of test includes comparing the Leaded brass with the unleaded brasssamples machined at 0.06, 0.1, 0.15 and 0.2mm/rev respectively. The studyfocuses on the correlation of cutting feed and the surface parameters. Comparingthe results of two tests, the unleaded brass machined @ feed rate 0.2mm/rev,200m/min, 1.5mm depth of cut posses similar surface functionality as leadedbrass.

Kotze, Klaus. "BRICS: strategies of persuasion." Doctoral thesis, Faculty of Law, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/30014.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the strategic communications of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) intergovernmental platform. BRICS is a recent addition to the growing array of international organisations. Though BRICS consists of significant emerging and re-emerging states, it remains poorly perceived and obscure. Previous analyses that have examined BRICS as an aggregation of its member states or distinguished it simply as a slogan designed by Goldman Sachs have failed to discern it for the rhetorical, strategic entity that it is. This dissertation focuses on BRICS’ essence and intent, its strategic communications. It analyses BRICS’ narrative and scenario, examining its rhetorical appeals, its strategies and tactics of persuasion. The study employs a critical rhetorical analysis to explore publically available primary documentation emanating from high-level BRICS meetings. Three analytical chapters assess this corpus, conceptually distinguished as programmatic (Memoranda of Understanding, agreements and treaties), organic (summit Declarations) and opportunistic (Statements) documents. This analysis expediently takes from disciplines and schools of thought to qualitatively and inductively assess strategic style and agency. It applies theoretical and conceptual tools to examine claims that emerge from the texts. BRICS’ documents present organisational strategy and articulate its appeals. These are rhetorically explored to discern BRICS, per se. BRICS’ rhetoric motions towards its aims. Its strategic means, ways and ends are closely assessed. The dissertation finds that BRICS is an informal intergovernmental regime towards engendering reform inside of the normative international order. Its claims indirectly shape global governance according to its interests. BRICS is a process-driven advocacy mechanism that brings states together as nodes in a state-centric intergovernmental style. It rhetorically steers towards its aspired outcomes without taking considerable action. It does so to avoid responsibility. It rhetorically performs the principles and norms of the legitimate international order under the United Nations, in order to substantiate its form of multilateralism; to actualise reform while maintaining structure. By employing its principles and norms, BRICS embodies and therefore territorialises the multilateral order. BRICS’ strategic communications develop an alternative narrative towards steering international cooperation and exchange. Its articulation of the international order confronts dictated hegemonic conceptions, asserting that no unilateral interpretation holds an absolute truth. Sovereign states are not circumscribed by other states but only by legitimate international law and order. In doing so BRICS pursues international recognition for its member states, disrupts what it perceives to be hegemonic inertia and redefines global governance. BRICS illustrates a significant modality to assess the contemporary international order and the recent developments in global power. Its indirect form, a procedural and fluid platform for extra-Western sovereign states to pursue influence and execute wills, proposes the evolution of international power in the 21st century. BRICS actively employs a hybrid (both-and) strategy to lead toward a reformed global order based on a greater balance of powers (multipolarity). The development of BRICS and BRICS Plus presents compelling cases for further, critical studies.

Abstract:
Use fixed braces is becoming more common in adolescents and adults. This may cause some pain and discomfort in performing some activities such as eating, talking and playing a wind instrument. The embouchure is fundamental for a good instrumental performance in the woodwind family. Wear fixed braces during instrument performance can become very uncomfortable. This Educational Project is divided into two parts: the first part is constituted of the literature review and the second part reports the study developed with a group of four french horn students during orthodontic treatment. The literature review will focus on the embouchure of the horn players, malocclusions caused by the performance of a wind instrument, the various types of fixed braces and the consequences that may arise from the use thereof, as well as research of the main accessories, technical and repertoire to relieve the performance of horn players in this situation. Since Braces & Brass is the only specific exercises book for horn players that use fixed braces, it was accomplished a research project with a group of four students in this situation to check the effectiveness of this method in the evolution of them.

Abstract:
This is research on the New Orleans Brass Band tradition. How popular music has influenced the bands repertoire and the style of music has been transferred to other areas of the country resulting in the formation of hybrid bands. Madison, Wisconsin is an area with two popular brass bands that began by studying the New Orleans brass bands' culture and music. Those bands are Mama Digdown's Brass Band and Youngblood Brass Band. Mama Digdown's is a brass band that performs original music in the traditional styles and forms of New Orleans brass band. Youngblood Brass Band started because Mama Digdown's inspired them and began playing shows with Digdown's and eventually broke away to form their own band. They wanted to push the limits of the New Orleans brass band instrumentation by incorporating hip-hop, rap, jazz, 1980's pop music, rock, and heavy metal that is rolled up into an intense brass sound.

Abstract:
Today’s leading brass chamber ensemble is the brass quintet, whose inception was relatively late compared to the string quartet or woodwind quintet. The first modern brass quintet formed in the 1950s, while the first string quartet can be traced to the 17th century. Compositions for woodwind quintet were written as early as 1811 during the Classical Period. The New York Brass Quintet, American Brass Quintet, and Annapolis Brass Quintet commissioned a large portion of the currently existing brass quintet literature. The literature grew exponentially as the brass quintet became popular in the 1960s. Also during this time, a new genre of works emerged for brass quintet with orchestral accompaniment. The paper references fifty-seven works for the brass quintet with orchestral accompaniment that were found through music catalogues, reviews, recordings and searching JSTOR, World Cat and Google. Since the author was not able to discover any scholarly treatment of this genre, this paper will address the gap and unearth the quantity of literature available. Many of these works are unrecorded. While there are many existing scores in the literature, there is a resurgence of compositions currently being written for brass quintet with orchestral accompaniment. This document is presented in two parts: Part I, “Overview of Brass Chamber Music in the Twentieth Century,” “Earliest Music in the United States for Brass Chamber Ensembles,” “A Brief History of the Modern Brass Quintet,” “Annapolis Brass Quintet,” and “A Survey of Existing Works for Brass Quintet and Orchestra.” The second part of this dissertation contains materials which are pertinent to the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree which include recital programs, program notes, and vita.

Wilson, Peter Antony. "'BRICS' and international tax law." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2017. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/24872.

Full text
Abstract:
This Thesis studies a new and evolving area of international tax law, namely, the international tax law of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the 'BRICS', and concludes that the thrust of their divergences from the developed world's international tax law evolves from the necessity to counter the significant illicit outflow of funds while not disturbing inbound FDI or, in recent times, their outbound FDI while ensuring profits are taxed where created. The design of the divergences reflects more on the initial limited manpower capacity of their emerging tax authorities to deal with the complex international tax law issues and politically encouraged policy cooperation amongst the BRICS than it does of actual tax authority cooperation although not wishing to underestimate the importance of that cooperation. Relevant to my conclusions are the published positions of international governance organisations and financing institutions, BRICS tax administrations, scholars and precedent, and I have used that information, both for and against, to arrive at the most rational conclusions. While economic theories may be relevant, they are not relevant to this study. My research questions include what is the basis of the BRICS approach to core international tax law, in what way has their approach to defining evasion and avoidance been driven by the magnitude of profits shifted offshore and particularly to tax havens and whether their divergences from the developed world's approach to countering thin capitalisation, transfer pricing and controlled foreign companies have been fashioned by the necessity for countering the elevated level of abuse. My conclusions also reflect my research on whether the divergences have been designed to counter treaty abuse affiliated with the transactions implemented by MNEs intending to shift the profits offshore or the accumulation of passive income in tax havens and, on whether were the BRICS to localise the BEPS recommendations, would their capacity to counter this abuse be improved. My research also considers whether resolving the disputation arising from the increasing level of tax authority cross border audits and investigations can be facilitated through the adoption of alternative dispute resolution procedures. I also study whether the BRICS' response to the world's growing information exchanging architecture reflects their elevated necessity for gathering information to be used to stem illicit flows, countering international evasion and avoidance and ensuring profits are taxed where created. I conclude the study with recommendations for the BRICS Heads of Revenue to include in a Communique for updating their tax law and procedures which counter the abuse and assist in dispute resolution.

This research paper proposes an analysis of the emergence of informal arrangements as a new form of multilateralism, pointing out the historical evolution of international organizations as institutions representing multilateralism in practice. The crisis in classical multilateralism is unequivocal, for the world has been conferring a new shape to international relationships among its actors: less bureaucratic, less institutionalized, more efficient and effective. Informal arrangements bring in themselves cooperation as element of order, leaving the idea of ¿power for power¿ behind, in which the rich exploited the poor in compliance with military forces. BRICS is an example of a successful informal arrangement, that puts together such different countries with an only purpose in mind: development of participants based on the idea of cooperation. Times have changed, and international relationships must now adapt to this new world order.

Locomotion assistive devices can be broadly classified as either being passive or powered. Both have been created to aid in the leg's generation of a ground reaction force which supports the torso during locomotion, yet their inherent design has limited their functional growth to date. While many differing gait simulations have demonstrated stable solutions for lossless gait cycles, passive orthoses only diminish the user's impediment, and though powered gait exoskeletons can augment strength and endurance, they are limited by their energy demanding actuators. In response to these two extremes, an energy efficient locomotion assist device was developed from the basis of lossless gait models that did not require external power, and augmented locomotion by harvesting the inherent energy associated with the gait cycle. The simplest anthropomorphic leg can be modeled with a peg-leg shank, a knee, a thigh and a point mass for the head, arms and torso. Using a tuned non-linear hardening torsion spring at the knee joint, the torso support that is required between the ground and pelvis for lossless gait simulations can be generated; allowing the close physical realization of the theoretical. It was found that a single torsion spring can generate the leg thrusts necessary for a realistic range of walking and running gait velocities without the addition of any external power. While frictional losses do inhibit the locomotion assist device's efficiency, since the device functions in parallel with the user's leg, any losses can be supplemented with minimal muscular activity. These results give strong indication that a new avenue of gait assistive and gait augmenting devices that require minimal actuation energy is feasible.

Caducous bract (bracts which fall before the bolls open) tetra-ploid cottons with 52 chromosomes were developed after many years of hybridization and selection. Since the bracts shed, and are not present when the bolls open and the cottons harvested, it would mean cleaner cotton that would be an economic benefit to the farmers. It would also prevent textile mill workers from being exposed to the cotton dust of bract origin.

The fundamental challenge for the structural engineer in designing earthquake-resistant structures is to design buildings with both adequate ductility and sufficient stiffness. Traditional lateral force resisting systems such as the moment resisting frame and the concentrically braced frame are both conventional structural schemes that have been implemented for many years, but result in only mediocre performance levels. The lacking stiffness of a moment resisting frame as well as the limited ductility of a concentrically braced frame gave impetus for engineers to direct significant research efforts into the development of new lateral resisting systems that embody a more stable hysteretic behavior, adequate ductility, control of damage, and energy dissipating capacity. Fortunately, several recent developments have allowed engineers to move one step closer to designing more efficient earthquake-resistant structures. "High-performance braces," as this thesis calls them, are new and improved bracing systems that combine the economy and stiffness of a concentrically braced frame with the ductility and energy dissipating capacity of a moment resisting frame. This thesis analyzes and evaluates three different types of high-performance braces: (i) the buckling-restrained brace frame, (ii) the self-centering energy dissipating brace frame, and (iii) the hybrid brace frame, with regards to their structural performance and economy. The primary goal of the thesis is to provide useful insights into the current developments of high-performance braces for practicing engineers in the hope that such systems can be more widely adopted and utilized in the contemporary design of earthquake-resistant structures.
The objective of this work is to analyze the role of discourse in the formation of BRICS. The hypothesis is that the discourses made possible the approximation between the five countries and forged a contingent identity between Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. To test the hypothesis, we will use the post-structuralist theoretical framework of Laclau and Mouffe (1985), as well as that of International Relations theorists who work with identity and discourse in foreign policy studies. In terms of methodology, it will be analyzed 22 speeches delivered by the leaders of BRICS countries at General Assembly of the United Nations from 2002 to 2009. In addition, the document resulting from the I BRIC Summit, in 2009, will be studied. Therefore, we intend to test some discursive elements present in the BRICS to demonstrate the formation of the arrangement from a contingencial identity. The discursive elements to be investigated are the following: (1) contingency of discourse; 2) relational identity; (3) articulatory practice; (4) hegemonic discourse. Discourse is a complex of elements given from a set of relations. In the context of international relations, interactions take place in various fields of politics. In particular, the United Nations is an important arena of political struggle, but also of cooperation among nations. Because it brings together several specific demands, the United Nations is one of the main spaces of social interaction, in which States and other social agents seek to represent, signify and re-signify social relations. Diplomatic relations are also capable of creating new insights about the world. From these interactions, new identities are constructed or reconstructed and interpreted in the light of discursive language.

Deane, Anne Margaret. "Time domain work on brass instruments." Thesis, University of Surrey, 1986. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/847357/.

Full text
Abstract:
This work investigates brass instruments in the time domain, rather than the traditional frequency domain, and considers first, impulse measurements and secondly, their analysis. An existing apparatus for measuring the response to an acoustic impulse at the input of a brass instrument has been refined. Problems of impulse inconsistency, ambient temperature variation and source reflections have been resolved. Developments of the above equipment are used to test the quality of brass instruments on a factory production line. A prototype and a test instrument are compared by taking the arithmetical difference of their impulse responses. The equipment has detected small faults missed by normal inspection methods. The usefulness of this technique to brass instrument manufacturers is discussed. Links between the instrument's measured transient response and its bore geometry have been developed. The stages involved are deconvolution and bore reconstruction. Various deconvolution methods have been studied systematicaly by applying them to simulated noiseless and noisy data. Noise introduces errors, particularly at high frequencies, so deconvolution of real measured data is distorted. Techniques to reduce the effects of noise have been investigated. Attempts to employ the Gerchberg restoration algorithm 'to restore high frequency information proved unsuccessful. A new inverse method, based on an iterative z-transform procedure, of reconstructing an instrument's bore shape and damping profile from its transient response has been developed. It produces perfect results for noiseless model data, but even the smallest amount of noise renders the method unstable. Regularisation is therefore required. The corresponding direct process of predicting the transient response from bore and damping data is stable and produces results which compare well with measured responses. The work strengthens relationships between an instrument's shape and its musical quality, and will enhance the design of better instruments. Further research on the link between transient response and subjective quality is recommended.

Abstract:
One of the major factors that affect economic growth is FDI - Forgein Direct Investment. BRICS is a newly formed trade bloc that includes 5 of the largest, most heavily populated, and most emerging economies in the world, their economies share various characteristics, yet they also have various differences. The purpose of the thesis is to find the determinants of FDI in this trade bloc. Those determinants were specifically chosen based on multiple accredited previous literature. In this thesis a panel data regression is performed for these 5 partners with data ranging from 1995 to 2018. The results of the thesis were both predicted and surprising, as two determinants were in accordance with the past literature, however the other two  determinants had other results, both of these variables had opposite signs compared to their predicted signs that were expected from the chosen previous literature. Our research tries to answer the question of how do these determinants affect FDI inflows, in order for countries to make strategies to attract it.

Abstract:

Wordelman, Peter Dale. "Daniel Moe's choral works with brass accompaniment." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185475.

Full text
Abstract:
Many twentieth-century American composers have written works for chorus with brass accompaniment. This study focuses on the compositional techniques Daniel Moe applies to his brass and choral works and the musical and religious influences that aided in the development of Moe's composition language. Eight of Daniel Moe's works for brass and chorus are analyzed to determine the influences and techniques employed in his style of composition. The analysis reveals: the choir and brass remain independent and never dominate each other, the brass consistently play at their loudest dynamic levels while the choir is not singing, the heights of the choral phrases are unaccompanied, and final cadences are voiced with the highest pitches in the choral writing which allows an equality of forces. As a conductor, Moe has encountered many Venetian and contemporary works for brass and chorus that had a direct result on the techniques he applied to his brass and choral works. The evidence suggests that Daniel Moe's choral works with brass accompaniment involve a combination of twentieth-century harmonies and rhythms, Biblical and liturgical texts influenced by his strong Lutheran heritage, and a style of transparent scoring which carefully integrates the brass instruments into the overall texture of his compositions.

Goddard, Alex John. "Nanoscale observations of fingerprints on brass substrates." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/28145.

Full text
Abstract:
The recovery and visualisation of fingerprints on brass substrates by traditional methods is frequently unsatisfactory, particularly when the samples have been subjected to extreme environmental conditions. This includes items for which surface morphology or exposure to non-ambient conditions compromises traditional recovery methods. To address this challenge, the work in this thesis aims to understand the physical and chemical changes occurring for fingerprint sweat deposited onto brass substrates. This was accomplished by monitoring samples using a range of different surface sensitive techniques, based on optical, physical and chemical phenomena. The main aspects explored were surface structure (topography and morphology, using various microscopies), surface composition (using XPS) and surface dynamics (evolution of surface composition and structure with exposure to diverse conditions). The amount and viscosity of fingerprint sweat deposit changed over time; this was detectable at both the nanoscale (by AFM) and macroscale (optically). The visualisation rate of the fingerprint mark could be enhanced by storage in warm humid environments. The chemical surface composition was also subject to change: this applied to both the substrate and the fingerprint sweat deposit. The Cu:Zn ratio of the substrate was affected by both the sweat type and the storage conditions employed. Surface species also changed when subjected to different storage environments. The fingerprint sweat deposit present on the substrates was difficult to remove; even washing in warm soapy water failed to remove detectable levels of the fingerprint. Non-visible fingerprints could still be detected by surface chemical composition and also revived by storage in warm humid environments. The detailed findings should influence laboratory experiment protocols and evidence processing. The outcomes of this work should improve the recovery of fingerprints from brass substrates by optimisation of storage environments and new fingerprint detection methodology.

Prinz, Gary S. "Using Buckling-Restrained Braces in Eccentric Configurations." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2010. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2134.

Full text
Abstract:
Ductile braced frames are often used to resist lateral earthquake loads in steel buildings; however the presence of a brace element can sometimes interfere with architectural features. One common type of ductile braced frame system sometimes used to accommodate architectural features is the eccentrically braced frame (EBF). In order to dissipate seismic forces, EBF beam regions (called links) must sustain large inelastic deformations. EBF links with column connections must transmit large moments and shear forces to facilitate link rotation. Experiments have shown that welded link-to-column connections tend to fracture in the link flange prior to large link rotations. This study investigated methods for improving EBF link-to-column connection performance, and proposed an alternative ductile braced frame system for accommodating architectural features. Several EBF links with reduced web and flange sections were analytically investigated using validated finite element models in ABAQUS. Results indicated that putting holes in the link web reduced stress and strain values in the link flanges at the connection, but increased the plastic strain and stress triaxiality in the web at the edges of holes. Removing area from the link flanges had little effect on connection stresses and strains. Thus, the reduced web section and reduced flange section methods are not a promising solution to the EBF link-to-column connection problem. The alternative braced frame system proposed in the dissertation used ductile beam splices and buckling-restrained braces in eccentric configurations (BRBF-Es) to accommodate architectural features. Design considerations for the BRBF-Es were determined and dynamic BRBF-E performance was compared with EBF performance. BRBF-E system and component performance was determined using multiple finite element methods. Inter-story drifts and residual drifts for the BRBF-Es were similar to those for EBFs. Results indicated that BRBF-Es are a viable alternative to the EBF, and may result in better design economy than EBFs. With the BRBF-E, damage was isolated within the brace, and in the EBF, damage was isolated within the link, indicating simpler repairs with the BRBF-E. Shop welding of BRBF-E members may replace the multiple field welds required in EBF construction.

_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The present work is divided between two studies. In the first part, we do a descriptive analysis of some economical and social caracteristics of BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). The goal of this first analysis is to show the importance that this group has been acheiving in a global scale, focusing in their similar caracteristics and common challenges to be pursued. In the second part, we analise the exchange rates, a variable that plays a key role in BRICS`s growth strategy. As a support to this analysis a monetary approach method to the determination of exchange rates with flexible prices is used. The empirical findings are that the signals of the estimated coeficients for the determining variables to the exchange rate are accordingly to the theory and are statisticaly significants when the group is taken as a hole. Seen as a very restrictive hipotesis, a new estimative is done considering the intercepts and the specific coeficients for each country separately. Under this new view, it is possible to observe that, for the BRICS, the real variables explain more the variation in the estimated exchange rates than the monetary variables. This means that the monetary model with flexible prices is not valid as a hole to this case, but can`t be totally refuted as well.

Panassiti, Antonio. "General relativity limit of Brans-Dicke gravity." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2021. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/23344/.

Full text
Abstract:
In Brans-Dicke gravity a scalar field non-minimally coupled with the curvature acts as a new gravitational degree of freedom in addition to the usual metric field of General Relativity. Usually, when the coupling ω of the scalar field diverges, the latter approaches a constant and the solutions of the theory reduce to those generated by the Einstein equations with the same energy-momentum tensor as source. However, in the limit ω → ∞, the static and spherically symmetric vacuum solutions, called Brans solutions, do not reduce to the Schwarzschild metric, the only solution of General Relativity with the same type of symmetry. In this work we test their limit with a new method. Unlike the usual way, we use the Brans solutions to take the limit at the level of the equations. Since these are non-linear field equations depending on ω, in principle our procedure could lead to a different outcome. In particular, we take advantage of the Einstein frame formulation of the Brans-Dicke theory and we check if the solutions are able to satisfy the equations of the so called Minimal Geometric Deformation approach. Namely, we study if they can be seen as a geometric deformation - due to the Brans-Dicke scalar - of the Schwarzschild solution. Indeed, the peculiar feature of the geometric deformation is that it is built in such a way to guarantee a clear limit to the vacuum equations of General Relativity. However, we find that the Brans solutions do not meet all the requirements imposed by the structure of the Minimal Geometric Deformation approach. This result supports the conclusion that there is no simple limiting procedure in which the complete Brans-Dicke theory just reduces to General Relativity.

Van, Staden Jacobus M. C. "Exploring performance related anxiety in brass players." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/58984.

Full text
Abstract:
Music performance anxiety (MPA) is primarily described as stage fright concerning musicians and performers and affects orchestral and professional musicians severely (Brugués, 2009; Plummer, 2007). As a result, literature on MPA focuses extensively on how it affects professional and adolescent musicians, but limited resources emphasise how it affects brass instrumentalists. The aim of the study is to investigate the occurrence and experience of MPA in brass players. Further, it aims to explore prominent symptoms in this population and what coping strategies are most effective against MPA. Ten brass (five French horn, three trumpet and two trombone) players, of whom eight are professional and two semi-professional musicians, with varying performance experience, participated in this study. The study uses a qualitative research approach and falls into the interpretive paradigm. A multiple case study design was followed. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, probing each participant’s reported experiences and coping strategies. MPA inhibits a brass player’s musical performance in areas such as musical expression, technical proficiency, physical endurance, tone quality and enjoyment. The results suggest that most of the participants experienced MPA since childhood, regardless of the starting age, and experiences of this condition varied over time throughout adulthood. The symptoms of MPA manifests physiologically (shaking, dry mouth, increased heart rate, sweating), behaviourally (muscle tension, shaking, dry lips), and cognitively (negative thought processes). First-time experiences of a musically demanding task such exams and Eisteddfods, with intimidating audiences, impacted early signs of severe MPA symptoms such as shaking and had a blunting effect on performance quality. Increased task difficulty, limited performance opportunities, auditions, recitals, and orchestral environments, which exposed the player’s performing ability under pressure, had a profound influence on recent experiences of MPA. These situations evoked multiple symptoms such as dry mouth, accelerated heartbeat, shortness of breath, negative thoughts/feelings and self-doubt. Symptoms such as a dry mouth, accelerated heartbeat, shortness of breath, and shaking affects a brass player’s musical performance severely, since it inhibits tone quality and influences musical spontaneity. Therefore, these symptoms affect technical proficiency among brass players negatively since performing these instruments are physically demanding. The results also showed that teachers gave useful advice concerning performing a brass instrument under pressure. The advice was useful among the participants’ lived experiences of MPA, particularly regarding early-experienced symptoms. The experiences of MPA in high demanding performance settings resulted in a better understanding of the situation over time, and led to the reported coping strategies against MPA, which enhanced optimal performance and reduced symptoms. The study concludes that MPA adversely affects brass instrumentalists, particularly the physiological manifestation of the condition. More research is needed to identify symptoms unique to this instrument group and the most effective coping strategies.

Abstract:
The primary objective of this work is to comprehensively evaluate the capacity of the BRICS to achieve its objectives by mutual cooperation, based on the confrontation of the declared aims of the group itself during its annual summits with real achievements. The secondary aim of the study is to estimate the direction in which the cooperation between the BRICS will be heading in the future and to define possible challenges threatening its success. The thesis is divided into three parts. In the first part the author describes the genesis of the term "BRICS", and then continues by describing the essential characteristics of individual BRICS countries and their mutual similarities and differences. In the second, main part, the author evaluates the extent of fulfillment of individual goals set during the BRICS summits, taking place annually since 2009. The author evaluates seven selected key goals by analyzing the reasons for their implementation, proposed methods of implementation, the steps taken for their fulfillment, the effectiveness of these steps and the current status. Subsequently, in a similar manner author evaluates several sub-targets. In the third part, the author presents the expectations for the forthcoming BRICS summit, outlines possible directions that will be taken by BRICS in the future and identifies the weaknesses threatening their successful cooperation.
