Abstract:
The Dodecatemoria may be understood as a very simple reproduction of the Moon’s movement: for each day in the schematic year, the Dodecatemoria-scheme gives the position of the schematic Moon in the zodiacal circle. The Moon’s angular velocity was calculated as 13°/day and the Sun’s, as 1°/day. The scheme of the Calendar Texts may also be interpreted astronomically: for each position in the zodiacal circle, it gives the date at which the schematic Moon was in that position. We know that the schemes are inverse. A closer analysis of the texts accompanying the Calendar Text (LBAT 1586+1587) shows that the Babylonians also knew and utilized that fact as well. Full text
Abstract:
Single census data were used to investigate the stage structure within populations of the endemic fern genus Diellia in the Hawaiian Islands. Populations were classified as "dynamic" (sporelings predominate), "normal", or " regressive" (mature plants predominate). Six taxa were studied: Diellia erecta Brack., Diellia erecta f. alexandri (Hillebr.) W.H. Wagner, Diellia falcata Brack., Diellia mannii (D.C. Eaton) W.J. Rob., Diellia pallida W.H. Wagner, and Diellia unisora W.H. Wagner. There were significant differences between the population stage structures of different taxa. The populations of D. erecta f. alexandri, and D. unisora represented regressive cases. Diellia pallida was represented by two regressive and one dynamic local population. The status of local populations of D. erecta and D. falcata varied from dynamic to regressive. Diellia erecta f. alexandri, D. mannii, D. pallida, and D. unisora are probably near extinction. Variation in local population conditions of D. erecta, D. falcata, and D. pallida may represent the history of local colonization and subsequent extinction events. The regional dynamics of these taxa correspond with the metapopulation model, since pteridophytes have good dispersal ability, and recruitment of Diellia species takes place only in moist years and is influenced by local disturbances. We conclude that stage structure of local populations can indicate the regional dynamics of a species. All local Diellia populations have to be considered as priority candidates for future conservation efforts.Key words: conservation, Diellia, Hawaiian Islands, metapopulation, population stage structure, regional dynamics.

‘The artificial lung especially has lingered behind progress with artificial hearts and ventricular assist devices, not because the need for lungs has not been recognized, but because we have not had a full understanding of the engineering problems and the unique material requirements until recent years.’1 Brack Hattler, MD PhD The development from the first clinical use of haemo-dialysis over five decades ago to widespread chronic treatment took more than two decades. The histories of other artificial organ technologies, such as artificial hearts, follow similar long development paths. For five decades, due to a lack of technology, artificial lungs have been limited to use with a heart-lung machine for cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The advent of pumpless biocompatible artificial lungs will open new treatment options for patients with acute or chronic lung failure.

Abstract:
BM 47762 is the rest of a circular tablet, which was divided into 12 sectors by lines from the center to the rim. Each sector was labelled by a zodiacal sign. Our tablet consists in part of the sectors IX, X, XI, and XII, which are concerned with the zodiacal signs of Sagittarius (month IX), Capricorn (month X), Aquarius (month XI), and Pisces (month XII). In lines 2 to 5 of each sector, some four numbers are written, which in pairs can be understood as a date (month, day) or as a position (sign, degree)—just as in the Dodecatemoria and its inverse, the Calendar Texts (Kalendertexte). The combination of number pairs on BM 47762 do not appear in those schemes. However, the difference between the pairs in lines 3, 4, and 5 is always equal to 277, a very special number which is known from the Calendar Texts. Evidently, our number pairs must somehow be connected to those number schemes. This paper investigates and finds a very interesting connection. It shows that all number pairs stand for dates, for which the Dodecatemoria scheme will give the position of the schematic Moon in its four important phases. The second number pairs refer to the months of the section, while the first pairs give the dates of the four important lunar phases three months earlier. The two dates on each line correspond to lunar positions taking place at almost the same position in the zodiac. The zodiacal signs of the lunar phases on days 7, 14, 21, and 28 join to squares which are mostly known from Greek astrology. For example, for month XI, the signs of the Moon have the numbers 2, 5, 8, and 11, i.e., the zodiacal square with 11 as one of the corners. Maybe we here have found the origin of the quadruplicities of the zodiacal signs. Abstract:
Reentry has become a more focused aspect of study abroad in recent years as the field has moved away from a laissez-faire approach and toward an emphasis on intervention and support of study abroad students in their efforts to make sense of their experiences (Vande Berg, Paige & Lou, 2012). Although not a new concept (Brathurst & La Brack, 2012), reentry in its more recent incarnation can be seen as an opportunity for students to ratify and reconstrue their encounters with a foreign culture in a way that enhances a sense of self in an intercultural world (Selby, 2008). Despite its history and current popularity, many concepts and ideas about reentry rely on anecdotal, non-research based theorizing. The current study attempts to quantify two important aspects of reentry (behavioral readaptation and emotional response) in the context of measured factors that might impact the intensity of reentry challenges.

Brack.

Abstract:
In 2001, the first author (S.N.) led the publication of a book entitled “Geochemistry and the origin of life” in collaboration with Dr. Andre Brack aiming to figure out geo- and astro-chemical processes essential for the emergence of life. Since then, a great number of research progress has been achieved in the relevant topics from our group and others, ranging from the extraterrestrial inputs of life’s building blocks, the chemical evolution on Earth with the aid of mineral catalysts, to the fossilized records of ancient microorganisms. Here, in addition to summarizing these findings for the origin and early evolution of life, we propose a new hypothesis for the generation and co-evolution of photosynthesis with the redox and photochemical conditions on the Earth’s surface. Besides these bottom-up approaches, we introduce an experimental study on the role of water molecules in the life’s function, focusing on the transition from live, dormant, and dead states through dehydration/hydration. Further spectroscopic studies on the hydrogen bonding behaviors of water molecules in living cells will provide important clues to solve the complex nature of life.

Abstract:
The crises for potable water is inevitable, due to increasing population. Solar desalination is apt technology to convert brack water and sea water into potable one. In the current work a mathematical modelling of a single slope solar still integrated with sand troughs is presented. The model is validated with the experimental results of a solar still with 3cm of water level at the basin. The mathematical model findings and results obtained with the experimental investigations are within ?10% deviation. Capillary effect was proposed to obtain the yield daily basis and thermal effect model was integrated with the capillary effect model. From the results, it is understood that the yield obtained is more in the case of solar stills with sand troughs when compared to solar stills without sand troughs. Further the model is used for predicting yield for 1cm and 2cm of water levels at the basin. It is observed that the maximum yield was obtained for 1cm water level at the basin. There is a good agreement between theoritacal results and experimental results. It shows that the still produce better yield with the lower depth of water level at the basin, this may be because of the availability of more space in the sand for evaporation due to capillary effect in the troughs.

Abstract:
Hedda Gabler has long been acknowledged as among the most problematic as well as one of the greatest of Ibsen's plays, requiring a delicate balance to be struck in production between a clearly defined social context and the need to express Hedda's existential selfhood. Here, Erik Østerud, developing a view of the play which as early as 1893 recognized it as ‘waltz tunes over an abyss of nothingness’, defines the three distinct ‘worlds’ around which Hedda circles – those characterized by Aunt Julie, the red-haired singer, and Judge Brack – and her struggles to reconcile Løvberg's impetuous idealism with Brack's facade of conformity. Calling upon a wide range of cultual references, but with a vision focused on the actuality of the play's scenography, Østerud sees the separate social groupings as at once interlocked through a mythic analogy with the cult of Dionysus, and in more contemporary terms giving us an ‘overview of the total economy of sexuality within a bourgeois society that is dominated by panoptical supervision and strong sexual repression’. Erik Østerud is Professor of Scandinavian Literature at the University of Trondheim, having previously taught at Aarhus, Berkeley, and Oslo. His most recent publication is Theatrical and Narrative Space (Aarhus University Press, 1998).
