Abstract:
Many kind of cancer cells exploit glycolysis rather than oxidative phosphorylation for energy production even in the presence of oxygen. This kind of metabolism, although less efficient in terms of ATP production, generates high levels of glycolytic intermediates necessary to support the high biosynthetic flux of rapidly proliferating cells. . This mechanism is further enhanced in cancer cells by the expression of a particular form of pyruvate kinase -M2 (PKM2) which promote a low efficiency glycolysis (in terms or ATP production) and consequently an increase in the formation of biosynthetic metabolites. In this work we investigate the role of Bisphosphogliceratemutase (BPGM) an enzyme involved in the metabolic reprogramming of highly proliferating cancer cells. BPGM acts both as a mutase, converting the glycolytic intermediate 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate to 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate and as a phosphatase, converting the 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate to 3-phosphoglycerate. BPGM is an erythrocyte-specific enzyme but our real time PCR and western blotting experiments show its expression in many cancer cell lines and in proliferating primary human fibroblasts. BPGM silencing lead to a strong decrease of cell proliferation rate BPGM activity in cancer cell lead to the skipping of the first ATP production in the glycolytic pathway of glycolysis, causing an increase of glycolytic flux necessary to sustain the high rate of intermediates production needed for support cancer cells growth.

BPM (Business Process Management) Governance is an aspect often seen as critical to the success of BPM in organizations. This seems to be especially true for the public sector, where efficiency, accountability and transparency (three basic governance principles) must be coordinated. However, governance approaches in BPM have been characterized as complex and imprecise, with quite different views on the subject, in addition to macro level models that provide little help on how to implement it. Moreover, there is a small number of empirical papers describing practical reports on BPM governance. Therefore, there is a lack of consistent and detailed conceptual frameworks and concrete applications that researchers and practitioners can rely on to properly address BPM Governance. In light of such need, this thesis presents a conceptual model to support the implementation of governance in BPM, named BPMG Model. Initially, exploratory case studies were performed to identify barriers and facilitators that impact the deployment of BPM governance in public sector organizations conducting BPM initiatives. It was observed that studied organizations do not precisely understand the concept of BPM governance. The conception of the BPMG model adopted a design-science research approach and also encompassed the development of a software tool that implemented model elements. Both the BPMG Model and the software tool were evaluated by the members of a BPM Office from a Brazilian public organization and by a group of governance experts from different organizations. Evaluation results revealed that the BPMG Model and tool supported BPM practitioners of the organization to develop a more accurate and shared understanding of governance in BPM. In particular, the model was considered as significantly helpful for the implementation of governance principles in the organization.

In search for agility, economy and quality in their processes, an increasing number of companies have adopted techniques of Business Process Management (BPM), as this allows the organization make its processes more efficient with greater precision, speed, flexibility and quality. However, even when managed, processes may face risks that can cause strong impact on the organization's goals if these risks are not managed appropriately. As risk management requires resources and the execution of many activities (interviews, analysis, meetings and so on) which are also demanded by BPM, the integration of these two fields has been a research theme frequent in recent years. A problem with existing works, however, is that the risk management activities proposed are applied only to some phases of the BPM lifecycle. This work aimed to construct and evaluate a methodology to manage risks of business processes integrated with the BPM lifecycle. The methodology, called R-BPM, is composed of a set of phases and a supporting tool. It is inspired by the COSO (Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission) risk management structure and was built by Design Science Research strategy, which involves an iterative cycle of construction and evaluation. To evaluate the methodology and the software tool built to support it, we conducted a case study in a public organization. The artifacts were assessed through focus groups and surveys with the organization's experts. The results showed that the R-BPM allows the activities related to risk management can now be implemented together with the BPM lifecycle, as well as shares responsibility for the risks and provides better conditions for process owners evaluate them. As the methodology was used to solve a real-world problem in the organization studied, this research also contributed to the dissemination of academic knowledge to market.

Business Process Management (BPM) initiatives require changes in the organizational environment, with significant impacts on corporate culture. Therefore, Change Management is an organizational strategy that must be included in BPM initiatives to support the organization to achieve the strategic objectives and maximize the readiness state for change. However, in academia and companies, there are no methodologies that address the Change Management integrated with the Business Process Management cycle. That context, this research proposes a Change Management methodology aligned with the BPM lifecycle, called C-BPM Methodology (English, Change - Business Process Management). The proposed methodology is based on the PMI guide (Project Management Institute) called "Managing Change in Organizations: A Practice Guide," and the approach proposed by John P. Kotter called "Kotter's 8-Step Process for Leading Change." Based on these references, actions were proposed that integrate communication and training practices to the general guidelines of change management and BPM principles. The applicability of the C-BPM methodology was evaluated through an exploratory case study in a public organization that is leading a BPM initiative. To data collect, we conducted focus groups and a survey of qualitative research, with the participation of specialists in Business Process Management. As a result of the evaluation, it was found that C-BPM methodology propound relevant characteristics to improving the management of BPM initiatives, favoring the establishment of an organizational culture that accepts changes. Although the results are not generalizable to any type of organization, this research can serve as a reference for further studies in this area of expertise.

The BPM (Business Process Management) discipline aims to support organizations in the continuous improvement of business processes. In order to help the consistent evolution of BPM initiatives, it is important that organizations adopt maturity models to direct their future actions. A good maturity model must provide tools to evaluate the organizational strengths and weaknesses, support improvements and allow comparison with other organizations. The studies in this research suggest that the development of maturity models is not a simple task. The choice of an appropriate model is a complex activity that requires effictive planning. A major difficulty lies in the fact that most models available in the literature are not sufficiently tested or do not present practical and easily reproducible examples. In this research, it's proposed a guide for instantiation of BPM maturity models. The guide is called IMM-BPM and is structured in three systematic steps that specify activities that would be performed so that a maturity model can be effectively implemented and instantiated. The guide is based on the model proposed by Rosemann, de Bruin (2005) and was built using an approach of Design-Science Research combined with a Case Study Research. This research aimed, with the IMM-BPM, to instantiate a BPM maturity model in a public sector organization and to refine this guide with the lessons learned. We carried out several cycles of incremental improvements in the guide until get the desired results. In addition, its applicability was assessed through asurvey with BPM experts. As a result of the evaluation, it was found that the IMM-BPM guide is useful and facilitates the development of BPM maturity models, contributing to the construction of a culture that supports the evolution of BPM initiatives.

Abstract:
The ultra-wideband (UWB) technology has recently attracted considerable attention in industry and academia. This is due to the great potentials of the license exempt operation with UWB signals. These include high data. rate, low power consumption, robustness to multipath propagation, good penetration properties and the ability for accurate localization and ranging. The IEEE working group 802.15 set up two task groups (TGs) for the standardization of UWB physical layers for short-range communication: the IEEE T G 802.15.3a for high data-rate transmission which was officially formed in December 2007 and the IEEE TG 802.154a for low data-rate that became an official task group in March 2004. While the TG 802.15.3a did not succeed and was finally disbanded in January 2006; the TG 802.15.4a approved a draft standard in March 2007. This standard prescribes a rather unique coding and modulation scheme, namely the concatenation of an outer Reed-Solomon and an inner convolutional encoder with a mixed binary phase-shift keying and pulse position modulation (BPSK/BPPM) and time-varying spreading and position hopping. The decoding for and performance analysis of this coding and modulation scheme are the subjects of this thesis. First, we study the inner convolutional coded BPSK/BPPM in isolation. We suggest an optimal symbol-wise decoding metric, which replaces the sub-optimal bit-wise metric previously suggested in standardization documents, and we define semi-analytical ex- pressions for the bit-error rate (BER) performance with both optimal and sub-optimal decoding metrics. It is shown through analytical and simulated results that, using the optimal symbol-wise metric results in significant performance gains, of e.g. 2 dB at BER of 10‾³. while decoding complexity is identical to that with bit-wise decoding metric. Based on our semi-analytical results, we also quantify the performance loss due to RAKE combining with a limited number of fingers as opposed to ideal combining. Next, we investigate the entire concatenated coded BPSK/BPPM scheme, including the outer RS code and the inner convolutional code, and we suggest an improved decoding scheme by introducing reliability information generated by the inner decoder. More specifically, two different soft output Viterbi algorithms (SOVA) are considered and compared for generation of reliability information. For the conventional setup of inner Viterbi and outer RS decoder, we define semi-analytical expressions for the frame-error rate (FER) of the overall system, these expressions are highly valuable for quick performance assessment, since simulating the system's performance is extremely time consuming. In addition to decoding assuming perfect channel state information at the receiver (coherent receiver) considered so far, we also study the performance of decoding without channel state information (non-coherent receiver) to detect the BPPM data bit. This decoding mode is explicitly envisioned by the standard. Again, analytical expressions for BER. and FER are obtained, and the performance of non-coherent and coherent receivers are compared.

Abstract:
Interconnection between various types of IT systems used in an enterprise is crucial in these days. Most of companies are using many different kinds of applications in their daily running of the enterprise which leads to necessity of sharing data across those applications to enable all employees to make a right decision upon correct information. In my diploma thesis I deal with interconnection of two systems -- Business Process Management (BPM) and Business Intelligence (BI). Both systems belong to group of top IT systems with big influence on ongoing business and right decision making on all levels from operational to strategic. My paper contains theoretical as well as practical part of the solution for interconnection of BI and BPM systems. First part is about presenting and describing basic concepts and technologies which are used in process of integration of BI and BPM. At the beginning there is a short introduction to BPM, BI and SOA. Following part is including analysis of three major ways of interconnection between BI and BPM systems. Last part of the first theoretical section presents two products. IBM FileNet P8 representative of BPM system and IBM Cognos 8 BI as a representative of BI system. Second part deals with the practical example of real integration between BI and BPM systems. In first part of this section is simple description of the scenario -- business case. After that there is a detail depiction of two different kinds of integration of BI and BPM. Analysis of benefits, advantages and further possibilities are at the end of work.

Increasingly companies are using Business Process Management (BPM) tools as an alternative for modeling business processes. However, many of these tools include only part of the life cycle BPM or in unsatisfactory and required characteristics. In order to capture essential features for BPM Tools, this paper identifies and analyzes the characteristics and the quality factors of greatest importance. The list of features is based on guidelines of ISO/IEC 25000 standard and was evaluated by professional results were obtained by a survey. In the second part of this work we developed a structured interview consisting of questions about the use of BPM to support the Software Process focusing on the goals, gains, difficulties encountered, used tools, skills and behavior of professional Information Technology (IT) and relationship between software processes and organizational processes. The interview was administered to professionals who already have experience with BPM in TI. From the information obtained qualitative investigations were performed using the Grounded Theory method to seek conclusions about the relationship between BPM and Software Processes. The analysis of these results is evidence for a suitable choice of BPM Tools (BPMS) as well as some findings on the use of BPM as supporting software processes.
The Business Process Management (BPM) has been adopted by organizations to solve potential problems in the interactions of organizational activities, thus providing greater operational efficiency and improved service levels, which meet and improve the customer experience toward products and services. For this adoption, business processes undergo BPM projects, which aims to understand how a certain stage of organization operates, eliminating waste, and redesigning the process adhering to best practices and new concepts. After these project phases, actions are established that will transform the business process from the current state to the future. It is in this context of post project that this study of cases aims to analyze the "why" and "how" business processes effectively transformed. The "why" is the analysis of the variables that influence the effective transformation, and the variables are based on concepts of Routinization, Infusion and Cultural Change. And the "how" is based on BPM projects, their techniques, methods, tools and deliverables, setting leading standards. In the execution of this research, literature searches were performed to establish the main concepts, enabling clear definitions of the variables involved. The research was based on a multiple case study through interview data collection techniques and secondary data. The concepts, variables, questions and interview guide were validated with experts using Focus Group. After validation of the research instrument, interviews were conducted with organizations that had implemented BPM projects and their processes were in operation at the instant of the research. The data collection, along with the secondary data, obtained enough information for segmentation, coding and analysis. In the analysis, to measure the effective transformation, were established levels of influence, negative, neutral and positive, for each variable. Thus, the effective transformation of business processes could be analyzed through the composition of the influences of variables, extended use, use in integration, budget, staff, training, corporate governance, supply and maintenance, individual attitudes towards change and sharing knowledge. The result of the study shows that extended use variable was the most negatively influenced the effective transformation of the cases and, on the other hand, the variable corporate governance was the most influenced positively. In the analysis of leading patterns through the techniques, methods, tools and deliverables used in their BPM projects, a analysis called code density was used. From this density could be seen that Brainstorming, BPMN and Interviews are the most used among the techniques, methods, tools and deliverables of the cases. Therefore, these analyzes generated content for discussions that extended from the facilitators and barriers to effective transformation, through a parallel 7 between the conceptual and observed effective transformation until the techniques, methods, tools and deliverables that more were used.

Abstract:

Abstract:
As Business Process Management (BPM) is evolving and organisations are becoming more process oriented, the need for Expertise in BPM amongst practitioners has increased. Proactively managing Expertise in BPM is essential to unlock the potential of BPM as a management paradigm and competitive advantage. Whilst great attention is being paid by the BPM community to the technological aspects of BPM, relatively little research or work has been done concerning the expertise aspect of BPM. There is a substantial body of knowledge on expertise itself, however there is no common framework in existence at the time of writing, describing the fundamental attributes characterising Expertise in the illustrative context of BPM. There are direct implications of the understanding and characterisation of Expertise in the context of BPM as a key strategic component and success factor of BPM itself, as well as for those involved in BPM. Expertise in the context of BPM needs to be characterised to understand it, and be able to proactively manage it. Given the relative infancy of research into Expertise in the context of BPM, an exploration of the relevance and importance of Expertise in the context of BPM was considered essential, to ensure the study itself was of value to the BPM field. The aims of this research are firstly to address the two research questions 'why is expertise important and relevant in the context of BPM?', and 'how can Expertise in the context of BPM be characterised?', and secondly, the development of a comprehensive and validated A-priori model characterising Expertise in the illustrative context of BPM. The study is theory-guided. It has been undertaken via an extensive literature review across relevant literature domains, and a revelatory case study utilising several methods: informal discussions, an open-ended survey, and participant observation. An a-priori model was then developed which comprised of several Constructs and Sub-constructs, and several overall aspects of Expertise in BPM. This was followed by the conduct of interviews in the validation phase of the revelatory case study. The primary contributions of this study are to the fields of expertise, BPM and research. Contributions to the field of expertise include a comprehensive review of expertise literature in general and synthesised critique on expertise research, characterisation of expertise in an illustrative context as a system, and a comprehensive narrative of the dynamics and interrelationships of the core attributes characterising expertise. Contributions to the field of BPM include firstly, the establishment of the importance of understanding Expertise in the context of BPM, including a comprehensive overview of the role the relevance and importance of Expertise in the context of BPM, through explanation of the effect of Expertise in BPM. Secondly, a model characterising Expertise in the context of BPM, which can be used by BPM practitioners to clearly articulate and illuminate the state of Expertise in BPM in organisations. Contributions to the field of research include an extended view of Systems Theory developed, reflecting the importance of the system context in systems thinking, and a narrative on ontological innovation through the positioning of ontology as a meta-model of Expertise in the context of BPM.

Business Process Management (BPM) has become a powerful tool for increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of services provided in public and private organizations. However, there is growing awareness that BPM requires a holistic view of the organization where the organizational culture is a critical success factor for the deployment of a BPM initiative. The objective of this research is to analyze how an organizational culture supports the deployment and evolution of a Business Process Management initiative. In particular, we intend to identify values and cultural aspects of the organization who act as facilitators or barriers to the development of a BPM culture in the organization, from the point of view of different stakeholders, such as sponsors, project leaders, functional managers, analysts processes, systems analysts, customers of the initiative and external consultants. To understand this issue from a practical perspective, it performed an exploratory case study in a public sector organization that is leading a BPM initiative. Interviews were conducted, observations and document analysis to collect the data, which were analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The exploratory case study enabled the identification of values and cultural aspects that influence the implementation and consolidation of a BPM initiative, acting as facilitators or barriers. These cultural characteristics and their relations were represented by a model in which they explained the positive and negative influences that cultural characteristics have on the BPM initiative in the organization. Thus, the realization of this research and the results obtained contributed to increased knowledge about what values and cultural aspects influence the evolution of BPM, allowing the mitigation of possible negative impacts and the development of those cultural values that act as facilitators to strengthen an aligned culture with the principles of BPM.

Alghamdi, Amal. "Managing Clinical Handover Processes for Cardiology Patients Using BPM." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/32740.

Abstract:
Health-care delivery involves clinical handover processes that occur at many levels of inpatient care. These processes are essential to an effective health-care system due to their role in achieving efficient communication, reducing transmission time, and lowering costs. Ensuring safe and effective handover requires the coordination of multiple care providers that work together to deliver patient care efficiently. Poor coordination during handover can have major effects on patient care, leading to loss of information and contributing to adverse events. As health-care delivery evolves to become more patient-centered, handovers from short- to long-term care need to maintain a strong communication, which in turn will depend on the evolution of support systems for that communication. Due to the wide range of care providers and patient needs, there has so far been a lack of research work on handover processes. This study aims to explore the clinical handover process for patients moving from a cardiology unit to home and community care settings, and how they are affected by varying degrees of communication. It relies on literature review and a case study conducted at Montfort Hospital, Ontario, to identify and analyze the major factors involved in this type of handover, and to form suggestions about how this process could be improved. This thesis analyzes process scenarios arising in the case study, modeling them using business process management (BPM) tools and techniques to identify problems and formulate solutions. A model of the existing process is created and analyzed using business process management notation (BPMN), and is then subjected to analysis, the results of which identify several communication issues with a potential to cause delays and information loss. The findings highlight the importance of collaboration among care providers, and indicate the potential uses of BPM methodology to choreograph that collaboration. The study ultimately shows how improvements to collaboration and information exchange can increase the communication effectiveness in handover processes and reduce the probability of adverse patient events.

Rangiha, M. E. "A framework for social BPM based on social tagging." Thesis, City University London, 2016. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/14999/.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditional Business Process Management (BPM) has a number of limitations. The first one is the typical separation between process design and execution, which often causes discrepancies between the processes as they are designed and the way in which they are actually executed. Additionally, because of this separation, valuable first-hand knowledge generated during process execution may remain unused during process design and also prevented to be shared within the organisation. Social BPM, which predicates to integrate social software into the BPM lifecycle, has emerged as an answer to such limitations. Although there have been a number of approaches to Social BPM, they have not been able to address all the issues of traditional BPM. This thesis proposes a novel Social BPM framework in which social tagging is used to capture process knowledge emerging during the enactment and design of the processes. Process knowledge concerns both the type of activities chosen to fulfil a certain goal (i.e. what needs doing), and the skills and experience of users in executing specific tasks (i.e. skills which are needed to do it). Such knowledge is exploited by recommendation tools to support the design and enactment of future process instances. This framework overcomes the limitations of traditional BPM systems as it removes the barrier between the design and execution of the processes and also enables all users to be part of the different phases of the BPM lifecycle. We first provide an analysis of the literature to position our research area, and then we provide an overview of our framework discussing its specification and introducing a static conceptual model of its main entities. This framework is then elaborated further with a more dynamic model of the behaviour and, in particular, of the role and task recommendations, which are supported by social tagging. These mechanisms are then applied in a running example. Finally the framework is evaluated through the implementation of a prototype and its application in a case study. The thesis ends with a discussion about the different evaluation approaches of the proposed framework, limitations of our framework and future research.

Crosscutting concerns are those that interact between several processes, but at the same time are not part of them. Traditional methods of process modeling do not have a special treatment to take care of crosscutting concerns, causing them to remain scattered throughout the process model, making it difficult to understand and maintain them later. In this sense, orientation to aspects is a paradigm that offers mechanisms to modularize transversal interests. In this dissertation improvements are proposed in a notation for process modeling that uses orientation to aspects, in order to generate models of easier understanding and facilitate its later maintenance. The methodology used was design science, which is more detailed in its respective section. Finally, a case study was carried out to evaluate if the proposed notation can produce a valid process model. In the conclusions chapter, it can be seen that the result was satisfactory, and that further work could be carried out in the future.

Christie, Adrian Troy. "An Impact Assessment and Dependency Management Framework for BPM." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/39286.

Full text
Abstract:
Business Process Management (BPM) is a relatively new development paradigm that takes a high-level approach to coding by leveraging a graphical, “flow chart” aesthetic that allows users to assemble modular tasks into a larger process. The resulting diagrams effectively enshrine the organizations processes into an executable model that provides an objective and transparent view of the process and the activities contained within. In doing so, BPM models serve as both a system to guide employees through proper business procedures as well as documentation of the businesses processes. Similar to most other software development environments, BPM development platforms possess several features intended to address the needs of code versioning, dependency management and impact assessment. However, due to the unique way that development is done in BPM platforms, the more traditional functionality of these features sometimes renders them ineffective and ill suited to the task of BPM development. Changes to lower level reusable components in these BPM models can result in impacts to diverse processes across an organization that are difficult to predict and onerous to locate. There is much room for improvement in BPM development tools. This thesis proposes a new framework for dependency management and impact assessment to improve the usability, effectiveness and efficiency. The framework is composed of a Business Process Component Architecture, a Dependency Data Model and an Upgrade Algorithm which are all used to provide increased visibility over dependent processes and superior guidance during upgrade operations. Several example case scenarios are be used to evaluate our proposed framework. The cases represent progressive degrees of complexity to test the capabilities and robustness of the framework. Overall, the framework was able to appropriately handle the case examples used and showed promise in terms of providing practical effort, time and cost savings for BPM developers. The framework can also provide developers assistance in locating circular dependencies, but is subject to the same limitations as developers when attempting to upgrade these relationships.

In this study, we investigated and analyzed the fundamental concepts of BPM methodology (Business Process Modeling) through its BPMN notation (Business Process Modelling Notation) and software development through the UML (Unified Modeling Language), both linked to architecture SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture) with the aim of integrating the software development areas and business management, in order to provide a macro view of the processes. We chose to analyze BPM, because its methodology ensures a practice of rapid system development, making it flexible, and allows reuse, using legacy technologies, as companies can achieve greater control of business processes. Already the UML allows for standardization in software modeling and, as BPM, with possible integration with SOA. The aim of this study is to make the presentation of the various scenarios checked from a broad survey of the literature dealing with this integration. Thus, a quantitative and qualitative comparison of the scenarios found was carried out in order to define what is the best possibility of integration for a company. All this to ensure interoperability between different entities, adding value and reducing maintenance costs for companies. Through selected keywords, a search was made in specific databases for up papers on the integration BPM-SOA and UML-SOA. This survey allowed to observe different integration scenarios, beyond the advantages, disadvantages and problems mentioned by the authors. The purpose is to understand what the main obstacles related to the integration and implementation of BPM-SOA and SOA-UML to be able to prove quantitatively and qualitatively, the integrations and point out what the best possibility.

Abstract:
In the globalised context of modern industry, innovation has become a major challenge for enterprises. Innovation should not only be seen as a way to sustain long-term activities, but also as an essential component of daily management activities of organizations. To address this problem, especially in the Innovation Center of Pierre Fabre Laboratories, the chosen approach is located at the crossroads of two engineerings. Enterprise engineering is the first prism of our study, detecting what is part of the daily activities in the running processes, while innovation engineering reveals what is specific to an innovation process. At the crossroads of these two engineerings, a specific alignment identifies an original management approach focused on the innovation process and promoting the detection, diagnosis and assessment of potential innovation in the daily activities and projects. All the proposals for an innovation management have been applied to the Innovation Center, a breeding ground for our experimentation, highlighting original areas for improvement

Abstract:
The interest of organizations in managing business processes or BPM (Business Process Management) has increased in the last years worldwide, and its main motivator is the reduction of costs by means of more efficient processes. Just as other organizations, higher education institutions also seek to enhance their management and have received greater political and academic attention worldwide because of the value generation for the regional communities. In Brazil, private higher education institutions, which represent 88,17% of the educational institutions, face the challenge of the formation of great educational groups, increasing the demand to restructure based on the reduction of costs. In the case of public Brazilian higher education institutions, the enhancing of management is promoted by government initiatives, such as the National Program of Public Management and Debureaucratization - GesPública, which includes the management of business processes in its foundations. There are still few empirical studies detailing the adoption of this management approach, and none of them characterize the processes management among higher education institutions. Such factors motivated this study to characterize the management of business processes of Brazilian higher education institutions and identify improvement opportunities in the management of processes. In order to reach this aim, a sistematic bibliographic review and a field research were carried out. The sistematic review approached quantitative empirical studies on the subject, in two data bases: ISI/Web of Science and Scopus, aiming at building a framework of the aspects which improved the results of BPM. The field research involved the application of an online questionnaire to a sample of 139 Brazilian higher education institutions seeking to chacarterize how this institutions are managing their processes. It was possible to verify that the processes management exists in more than 90% of the studied institutions in different adoption levels, and this is a subject with an increasing importance for 82% of them. The analysis of the data of this sample based on the bibliographic review and the theoretical background allowed the identification of improvement opportunities in the processes management of higher education institutions and the proposing of a research agenda for subsequent studies. Another contribution of this study is the possibility of using the results for benchmarking, allowing the insititutions to evaluate their position in relation to the competitors in the processes management.

Full text
Abstract:
In this work, some developments in the theory of modelling integrated optical devices are discussed. The theory of the Beam Propagation Method (BPM) to analyse longitudinal optical waveguides is established. The BPM is then formulated and implemented numerically to study both two and three-dimensional optical waveguides using several Finite-Difference (FD) techniques. For the 2-D analysis, comparisons between the performance of the implicit Crank Nicholson (CN), the explicit Real Space (RS) and the Explicit Finite-Difference (EFD) are made through systematic tests on slab waveguide geometries. For three-dimensional applications, two explicit highly-parallel three-dimensional FD-BPMs (the RS and the EFD) have been implemented on two different parallel computers, namely a transputer array (MIMD type) and a Connection Machine (SIMD type). To assess the performance of parallel computers in this context, serial computer codes for the two methods have been implemented and a comparison between the speed of the serial and parallel codes has been made. Large gains in the speed of the parallel FD-BPMs have been obtained compared to the serial implementations; both methods, in their parallel form, can execute, per propagational step, a large problem containing 106 discretisation points in a few seconds. In addition, a comparison between the performance of the transputer array and the Connection Machine in executing the two FD-BPMs has been discussed. To assess and compare the two methods, three different rib waveguides and three different directional couplers have been analysed and the results compared with published results. It has been concluded from testing these methods that the parallel EFD-BPM is more efficient than the parallel RS-BPM. Then, the linear parallel EFD-BPM was extended to model nonlinear second harmonic generation process in three-dimensional waveguides, where the source field is allowed to deplete, using the transputer array and the Connection Machine.

Abstract:
The federal government, has been developing actions to stimulate the Brazilian public organizations seeking to manage the citizen and not only their internal processes. These actions are consolidated, among other ways, by the Charter of the Citizen Service Act and the Access to Information Law (AIL). One of the purposes of the Charter of Services to Citizens is to publicize the services provided by public organizations with their commitments of service to be widely known by the company since the AIL, requires public organizations to provide information to citizens by providing access and knowledge of their essential rights. In this context, it is imperative to understand and improve the organization's processes that are the foundation to execute demands, but also seek to align the process view of the data, enabling the implementation of information systems (IS) more streamlined and integrated. Business Process Management (BPM) is an alternative to learn, improve, adapt and automate business processes in order to support the administ rative activities providing greater control and quality initiatives undertaken. However, there are obstacles to a public organization to deploy BPM and align information systems, one of them is the lack of a strategy for the transition of management of functions for the management of processes. This paper presents a methodology Gressus to drive the implementation of BPM in public organizations, in order to support the development of SI compatible to the organization's processes. The applicability of Gressus was verified through a case study that selected the purchasing process in a public organization. The results indicated that the methodology Gressus may be a viable option for deployment of BPM in organizations that still don t have adopted by the management processes. This paper contributes by providing a way for the institutionalization of BPM in public organizations, supporting the development of SI aligned and thus obtain the best results

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to understand criteria, barriers, costs and benefits that are associated with implementing blockchain technology, and from this explore how blockchain technology can improve BPM. The study is of qualitative nature and was done sequentially by conducting an extensive cross-disciplinary literature review first, and then interviewed people with experience from blockchain technology. The analysis was done with both an inductive and deductive approach by doing a thematic analysis. The results from this study show that blockchain technology can reduce transactional costs, improve reconciliation, improve collaborative business processes and bring trust and transparency while supporting organizations with governance of data security, data consistency and reducing associated IT-costs with managing back-up of data, servers and storage. A lot of focus is currently centered around smart contracts, where incorporating the business logic together with an improved database structure allows for improved collaboration and automation of standardized business processes. The results also indicate a shortage of blockchain engineers, consequently impacting development and growth. The study highlights a need for further implementation studies and to better distinguish between the different blockchain types and the problems they can solve. Security, sustainability and interoperability are often mentioned as challenges in the current discourse on blockchain. This is not unique for blockchain and more nuanced explanation models are required. Blockchain technology may be the future and replace existing infrastructure, ultimately organizations have to consider at what point in time they should start thinking about putting it on their agenda and the associated trade-offs that comes with this.

Abstract:
In an effort to improve the management of public institutions, the federal government launched the GesPública program that encourages less bureaucracy and better management practices, including business process management, subject of this work. The main objective of this research is to verify the degree of use of business process management (BPM) in higher education federal institutions (IFES), both universities and federal institutes. For this, it was used a survey with two questionnaires sent to IFES: the first for the IFES working with BPM, and the second to IFES who do not work with BPM, seeking to verify why not work and difficulties to eventually put it into practice. The results show that universities are more advanced than the institutes regarding to work with BPM, and most IFES who do not work are federal institutes. The data analysis leads to the following conclusion: working with BPM and structuring processes offices are innovative in federal education organizations. Most federal universities use both for just two years. Furthermore, it was clear that the initiatives still need some guidance and further dissemination of BPM culture.

Abstract:
Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) is an acronym of Gartner Inc. to describe systems that are intended to provide "Real-time access to critical business performance indicators to improve the speed and efficiency of business operations. BAM systems help enterprises improve their operational efficiency and increase the ability of understanding and responding to events that have a significant impact on their business processes. Despite the fact that most businesses today are in urgent need to improve their operating performance, BAM systems as a solution seams to don't approach. The reality is that many software vendors supplied new BAM systems solutions by simply adding new features to existing products. In addition, there are no formal standards to define which specific features of the BAM system should contain. Another problem is the lack of theoretical models to support comparative analysis between the different systems of BAM. The aim of my thesis is to contribute to the improvement of the existing theoretical basis for the use of Business Activities Monitoring (BAM) as part of BI solutions, by providing an understanding of the relationship between the needs of decision support systems in real time and current applications of systems BAM. This work provides evidence that the relationship between the Real-time Business Intelligence needs of enterprises and BAM solution is determined by the need to ensure that the BAM system deliver current Real-time information to enable BAM users, who are often operating managers directly responsible for business processes, effectively respond to referred alert, supplied by the BAM system. To increase users' ability to effectively respond to events generated by the BAM system depends primarily on two basic operational issues. First, it is necessary to ensure adequate response for BAM users, to ensure necessary actions associated with the event. Second, BAM user must be able to understand the nature of the problem associated with the event, to initiate the proper steps to resolve the problem. Here it shows that, apart from insufficient knowledge of the nature of problems, BAM system needs, beside generation alerts in very low latency, also add context to these alerts, to provide enough information for BAM users to understand the nature of the problem associated with the event.

The Beam Propagation Method (BPM) together with an accurate Effective Index model is used as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) tool for the analysis, design and optimization of integrated optical devices. The performance of both active and passive 3-branch Ti:LiNbO$ sb3$ waveguide devices as a function of various design parameters is investigated. Then, the device design required to match a specified performance is deduced, and the theoretical performance predictions are verified experimentally through device fabrication and measurements.
In particular, a 3-branch passive power divider, a linear mode confinement modulator, and an active 3-branch switch were studied through their design and implementation. The theoretically predicted performance parameters were found to agree well with the measured values.

College/University major choice has been investigated mainly by research traditions from sociology, economics and career development/counseling. However, despite the multidisciplinarity of the research field and its convergence concerning the recognition of the economic character of the phenomenon, it needs theoretical integration. Due to the success in which the Behavioral Perspective Model (BPM) has been adopted to explain choices in consumption contexts, and considering the potential of an operant behavioral economic analysis of major choice, the feasibility of the model’s adoption to interpret the phenomenon in an integrated fashion was evaluated. Therefore, an operant behavioral economic analysis of major choice based on the BPM categories of situational antecedents (behavioral setting and learning history) and utilitarian and informational consequences was performed by three studies. In Study 1, theoretical-conceptual in nature, it was demonstrated that it is possible to interpret, based on the BPM analytical categories, the typical predictors reported in the literature. The suggested interpretation was exemplified empirically through two subsequent studies. In Study 2, majors offered by University of Brasilia were segmented according to consequential patterns (magnitudes of price, utilitarian and informational reinforcement), based on survey data with a sample of 444 participants from the Federal District, what produced three clusters. The consequential patterns obtained also showed a relation to the demand for the majors and to the passing scores at the UnB entrance exam, which proves the viability of major segmentation based upon BPM consequent categories. In Study 3, in turn, prediction relations involving BPM antecedent and consequent variables were analyzed using data referring to candidates’ choices during the 2016 UnB entrance exam. In addition to the finding that candidates choose maximizing utilitarian reinforcement, it was found that academic abilities, place of residence, socioeconomic family status (behavioral setting variables), and gender (learning history variable) predict, jointly, the consequential patterns signaled by the chosen majors. Together, the three studies set forth the feasibility of adopting the BPM as a theoretical methodological apparatus able to integrate major choice findings.

Abstract:
In the modern economy, creating agile business processes is one of the conditions to obtain/ maintain competitive advantage on the market. Efficient organizations need to ensure that their business processes are flexible so that these processes can easily accommodate changes in regulations and policies. Actually, the management of business processes is supported by the BPM (Business Process Management) approach. It addresses the management, transformation and improvement of organizational operations. Yet, actual BPM does not feature the means to have a continuous adaptation of their business processes and quick adjustment of their models and resources allocation to meet changing environmental conditions. In this thesis, we aim to support the agility of business processes to ensure a continuous adaptation to changes. The agility of business processes, combined with the agility of employees and that of information technology are prerequisites for achieving business agility. To support agility at IT level, we use the SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) approach. Indeed, the SOA can provide numerous benefits to the organization, enabling it to reduce complexity and increase flexibility through their reutilization and modularity features. Moreover, resources which are important assets in successful process’s implementation are widely supported with agile organization regarded as primordial factor for successful agility implementation. For this reason, we propose an approach that combines management of processes with the required skills to their execution and to better enhance the process flexibility we combine BPM with SOA in a social environment

Abstract:

The adoption of Business Process Management (BPM) is an issue of interest organizations and also of research in Management and Information Technology (IT) for its potential to improve organizational performance. However, the factors which characterize its adoption are not clear in the literature because the existing research present limitations related to the context, participating public, scope of concepts and market sector where they were performed. Therefore the aim of this study was to analyze which factors characterize the adoption of BPM in organizations. For this purpose was identified in the literature the factors that characterize this adoption and the critical success factors (CSF) relating them with ten principles proposed by Brocke et al. (2014a). From then it developed and validated an instrument to measure the implementation and use of BPM concepts in organizations. Finally we analyzed the organizational practices associated with this adoption. The method used to achieve these goals was the survey type applied in a professional public related to the subject of research in the period from 08/28/2015 to 11/16/2015. The sample reached 352 respondents and data collection occurred by questionnaire distributed over the Internet. For data analysis was used as a technical exploratory analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) and as a method confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). After adjustments to the model analysis results indicated the validity and reliability of research instrument. Finally, bring forward the contribution of this research to indicate the ten factors that characterize the adoption of BPM by organizations. These are: internal characteristics, process modeling, synergy between departments, clearly at the strategic level, commitment, roles and responsibilities, value chain, prioritization process, process culture and implementation.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to propose an extended model for operating Business Process Management (BPM), observing cultural and interpersonal factors. To achieve the goal, it was developed three articles. In the first article, a literature review exploring the relationship between the basic cultural assumptions of organizations and new management technologies was held. As a result, the research presents a framework that relates the new management according to the basic cultural assumptions, identifying the management technologies that most affect or are affected by organizational culture, giving a new perspective to the concepts underlying management technologies, in which BPM fits. In the second article, we sought to identify the Critical Success Factors (CSF) in a BPM initiative through literature review and participant observation in a case study. The main results of this article stands out: the identification of new CSF, not previously mentioned in the literature. In the third article, we propose an extended model for implementation of BPM based on the new CSF presented in the previous article, among them are: the lack of a framework between the area of IT and Process Team; through the study of various implementation methodologies and the relationship between areas was proposed an extended model to solve the problem at hand. In addition, it was found that the few solutions proposed in the literature are rarely related to the implementation and the adversities in the interrelationship between the areas in an organization. Finally, the results should enable future research in the BPM area.

Abstract:
Situation faced: Raiffeisen Bank Kosovo, as a subsidiary of Raiffeisen BankInternational AG, providesa wide range of banking products and services to all categories of customers in the private individual and business segments. In the first six months of 2018, the profit of the Bank was 11 Million Euro, being the highest in the banking market. The on-line banking channels has increased significantly and today the customers chose to do more than 80% of transactions through E-Banking, mobile phone,or ATMs. Raiffeisen Bank has started to adopt BPM since 2006 as a systemic and structured approach to analyze, improve, control, and manage processes with the aim to improve the quality of products and services. But, how well is BPM adapted and implemented in the bank, and what is the impact of BPM to the strategic goals? b)Action taken: This paper tackles the problem from two angles. First, a literature review is used to clarify the concept of BPM its scope. Second, semistructured interviews were used to collect data from nine participants covering high positions in Raiffeisen Bank Kosovo. In addition, the Research ffered both an evaluation of the significant aspects of the implementation process, and examinedthe key factors effects on alignment of BPM with organization strategy. c)Results achieved: his study unveils that BPM is well understood and is con-sidered an important practice within the bank. Its implementation is familiar to the top management. Especially, process visualization is a considered a core element within BPM projects. Existing project can further benefit from BPM by applying process ownership and defining responsibilities within the end to end processes in every department were these processes are performed. Moreover, this study collects evidence that strategy objectives can be led by BPM. d)Lessons learned: Experience has taught that there are many challenges whenapplying BPM initiatives. However, once these are applied, they help achieving strategic objectives. Two main challenges of implementing BPM were related to lack of proper IT support and budget needed to cover staff training. This paper recommends that BPM initiatives be strategy driven. It should be treated in a holistic way, including several methodologies like Six Sigma, Lean, and Agile. In this way, the Bank is lead towards thinking how its product or services are delivered to the customers.

Abstract:
Flowly is a tool for iBPMS packages, as are these intelligent suites for process management nicknamed by Gartner. These are technologies that make it possible to create and execute processes. Development of processes for these platforms goes through standard IT delivery cycle even for trivial and routine processes. Goal of this thesis is to create a tool for creating runnable business processes based on IBM Business Process Manager platform. The tool will allow creation of executable processes without programming or deep technical knowledge. Processes are created using a wizard like configurator in which processes can be drawn, users have ability to add data to the process, notifications, define SLAs and use other features. Tool created within this thesis is a workflow tool, which is a subset of iBPMS suites. The goal of this thesis is achieved by defining general functionalities of workflow tools which lay down basis of functionalities Flowly should contain. Following chapters describe in detail the creation of the tool, from initial analysis and design to technical details of implementation and user documentation. Benefits of the tool lie in simplicity of creating processes in iBPMS suites, increased agility of the company, when the creation and deployment of new process is shifted into the order of days and in massive reduction of cost of routine processes and agendas due to reduced IT involvement.

Data are created at any moment by the Government, including educational institutions. However, the use of these data by society is compromised because the data are not publically available. Besides, when they are available, they are commonly not properly structured or they are difficult to understand and manipulate. In the Brazilian government sphere, there is a movement to increase the supply of data on the Web, sometimes motivated by themes such as transparency, democracy, economic growth, innovation and social value to citizens and sometimes imposed by regulatory instruments. In order to assist in the process to make the data public, several initiatives have been developed, such as the development of methodologies, guides, standards, laws, regulations and good practices. However, each initiative does in a different way, not presenting a standardized language. But the immaturity of the institutions, especially the ones in the Federal sphere (focus of this work), in charge of making the data public, can get confused in this whirlwind of possibilities, because there is no standardization. Moreover, none of the existing options present an appropriate language for describing processes. Thus, there is a need for a new approach to guide these institutions to publicize data. On one hand, this new approach must propose some essential steps. On the other hand, it should not limit professional creativity. In addition, it must be configured as an instrument that determines a methodical planning for a process of making data public. This way, it is hoped the approach can harmonize involved areas, facilitating and accelerating the implementation of the process and contributing to the creation of a single and standard guide. In this context, this work presents, as main contribution, a proposal of process for publication of public data in the Federal Network of Vocational, Scientific and Technological Education based on the concepts of Business Process Management (BPM) using the notation BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation).

Abstract In a world of developing complex information technologies, companies and organizations need flexible and updated business systems that and match these technological developments. For this reason, commercial BPMS (Business Process Management System) tools have become popular because of their high ability to quickly integrate with business systems in new work environments. An alternative to commercial BPMS tools are the OSS-based (Open Source Software) open source BPMS tools that are available for the public to develop. Since the OSS-based BPMS tools are often new on the market and need further development, the purpose of this paper was to conduct an analysis of open source-based BPMS tools with respect to their various features. Such an analysis increases the understanding of the tools’ functionality and therefore facilitates further development of them. Based on an established analysis model by Delgado et al. (2015), a thematic option for some companies, depending on the characteristics and functionalities that are prioritized within the company. Content analysis was conducted to compare the characteristics of these tools. More specifically, collected documents were analyzed describing the properties of BPMS tools. That way, 6 different BPMS tools were compared based on 13 properties. The analysis showed that Bonitasoft, jBPM and JBPM5 were the most well-developed BPMS tools that supported most of the features. In addition, the analysis demonstrated that tools with fewer features could still be a good option for some companies, depending on the characteristics and functionalities that are prioritized within the company.
