Abstract:
Background:Few studies have used ecological models to study multiple levels of association with objectively measured moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in young children from middle-income countries. The purpose of this study was to examine potential correlates of objectively measured MVPA in Brazilian children. Methods:The sample consisted of 328 children. An Actigraph GT3X+ accelerometer was used to monitor MVPA over 7 days. Body mass index and body fat percentage were measured using a bioelectrical impedance scale. Questionnaires completed by the children, their parents, and school personnel queried individual, family and home, and school-level environmental correlates. Results:Children averaged 59.3 min/d in MVPA (44.5% met MVPA guidelines), and 51.8% were overweight/obese. For boys and girls combined, significant correlates (P < .05) of MVPA were waist circumference (β = –.007), travel mode to school (β = .140), maternal employment status (β = –.119) and TV in bedroom (β –.107). In boys, significant correlates of MVPA were waist circumference (β = –.011), travel mode to school (β = .133), and maternal employment status (β = –.195). In girls, the only significant correlate of MVPA was travel mode to school (β = .143).Conclusions:Several factors were identified as correlates of MVPA in Brazilian children; however, only travel mode to school was common for both boys and girls.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship between distance to school and levels of physical activity and sedentary behavior in UK adolescents. Participants were 1385 adolescents (boys n = 531; mean age 14.7 years). Boys living within two miles of school and girls living within 5 miles of school were more likely to report high levels (≥60 min per day) of weekday leisure time physical activity. Differences in weekday leisure time physical activity were accounted for by active travel time. There were no differences in sedentary behavior time by distance to school. Journeys, whether active or motorized, most often took place with friends. Further research should investigate wider physical and social environmental influences on active travel.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to (1) determine the physical activity levels of 9–11 year old children, and (2) compare the activity levels of children who commute to school by active and passive modes. 140 children aged 9–11 years (85 boys) were recruited from four urban Irish schools. Mode of commuting was assessed by questionnaire. Step counts were measured for 4 consecutive days. Mean daily step counts for the sample were 14386 ± 5634. Boys were significantly more active than girls (15857 ± 5482 vs. 12113 ± 5127 steps). Eighty-seven children (62.1%) traveled by car, 51 children (36.4%) walked to school, one child traveled by bus and one child cycled. Children who walked or cycled to school had higher daily step counts than those who traveled by passive modes (16118 ± 5757 vs. 13363 ± 5332 steps). Active commuting to school may therefore represent a worthwhile strategy for improving children’s physical activity levels.

Abstract:
This article deals with questions about the performative power of cultural products that travel the world. The Japanese manga genre Boys’ Love and Yaoi has gained a broad readership outside of Japan during recent decades. This has cultivated an image of Japan as sexually radical and ‘as more than Japan’, something which has produced alternative subject positions and practises regarding gender and sexuality among Swedish Boys’ Love/Yaoi followers. With the help of the concept hyperreality and elaborations on materiality within feminist theories, this article discusses: Which images of Japan and Sweden are produced as manga Boys’ Love/Yaoi – as cultural products – travel from Japan to Sweden? Which subject positions and forms of desires emerge? In order to understand how cultural products create new subjectivities, images and desires, we also ask: What can a sharper focus on materiality and the agency of matter add to the understanding of the concept of hyperreality and the construction of new realities? We argue that embodied experiences of certain subject positions and desires challenge the idea of the hyperreal as a surface phenomenon. Further, the article shows how the image of “Japan” is often coloured by the desires that West cultivates about the ‘other’.

Abstract:
This study investigated whether being driven to school was associated with lower weekday and weekend step counts, less active out-of-school leisure pursuits, and more sedentary behavior. Boys aged 10–13 years (n = 384) and girls aged 9–13 years (n = 500) attending 25 Australian primary schools wore a pedometer and completed a travel diary for one week. Parents and children completed surveys capturing leisure activity, screen time, and sociodemographics. Commute distance was objectively measured. Car travel was the most frequent mode of school transportation (boys: 51%, girls: 58%). After adjustment (sociodemographics, commute distance, and school clustering) children who were driven recorded fewer weekday steps than those who walked (girls: −1,393 steps p < .001, boys: −1,569 steps, p = .009) and participated in fewer active leisure activities (girls only: p = .043). There were no differences in weekend steps or screen time. Being driven to and from school is associated with less weekday pedometer-determined physical activity in 9- to 13-year-old elementary-school children. Encouraging children, especially girls, to walk to and from school (even for part of the way for those living further distances) could protect the health and well-being of those children who are insufficiently active.

Abstract:
This study investigated the association between a change in travel mode to school and one-year changes in physical activity (PA) among children in Hong Kong. Data from 677 children aged 7–10 years (56% boys) who participated in the Understanding Children’s Activity and Nutrition (UCAN) study were analyzed. During the 2010/11 and 2011/12 school years, the children wore an accelerometer for a week and their parents completed a questionnaire about the children’s modes of travel to school and nonschool destinations. Associations between a change in the mode of travel to school and changes in moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) were determined using linear mixed models, adjusting for covariates. Compared with children who consistently used passive travel modes, a change from passive to active travel to school was positively associated with changes in the percentage of time spent in MVPA (b = 1.32, 95% CI = 0.63, 2.02) and MVPA min/day (b = 10.97, 95% CI = 5.26, 16.68) on weekdays. Similar results were found for weekly MVPA. Promoting active travel to school may help to combat age-related decline in PA for some Chinese children. However, maintaining active travel to school may not be sufficient to halt the decreasing trend in MVPA with age.

Abstract:
Background: Although much evidence has demonstrated the positive relationship of active school travel (AST) and physical health, little is known about the relationship of AST and mental health indicators among early adolescents, especially in Chinese populations. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the relationship of AST with depressive symptoms and its sex as well as age difference among early adolescents from Shanghai urban areas, China. Methods: 6478 adolescents (mean age = 13.6) in urban area were recruited, of whom boys accounted for 46.2%. A self-reported questionnaire in Chinese was used to collect data on AST and depressive symptoms, and other control variables. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to explore the relationships of AST with depressive symptoms. Results: Of all included participants, 53.2% of adolescents reported being active in AST without sex difference. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 19.2% without sex difference. AST was associated with reporting no depressive symptoms in adolescents (adjusted OR = 1.20, 95%CI: 1.06–1.36). However, the relationship was significant in boys (adjusted OR = 1.34, 95%CI: 1.11–1.60), in those who were grade 8 (adjusted OR = 1.25, 95%CI: 1.01–1.55) and 9 (adjusted OR = 1.29, 95%CI: 1.01–1.65) adolescents. Conclusions: AST may play an important role in preventing depressive symptoms among early adolescents. However, the relationship of AST with depressive symptoms differed by sex and age. More research is encouraged to explore the mechanism linking AST and depressive symptoms among adolescents, especially in different contexts.

Abstract:
This study investigates the influences of built environmental (BE) factors, network design, and sociodemographic factors on active school travel (AST). Although numerous studies have explored these relationships, this study is trying to assess this issue with a focus on gender differences. Data from a cross-sectional sample of children from first to sixth grades from 16 public primary schools exclusive for girls and boys (N = 1260) in Shiraz collected in November 2019 was used. The analysis of the data revealed that, on average, boys are more willing to walk than girls, but that the boys’ tendency to walk is less elastic with respect to distance. Moreover, it is shown that street connectivity for all distance thresholds has a positive relationship with walking level, but the street network choice parameter decreases the chance of walking within an 800 metre threshold. It is demonstrated the need to take gender differences into account in local planning policies to promote AST in a developing country context.

Abstract:
This study analyzed time-use interviews to report levels of active and inactive behavior during the after-school period (3–6 pm). Interviews were conducted on random days from three separate seasons during third and fourth grade. Youth with at least two interviews during third (356 completed 2 interviews; 506 completed 3 interviews [9 yrs; 50% boys]) and fourth (186 completed 2 interviews; 768 completed 3 interviews [10 yrs; 50% boys]) grade were included to report levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), light physical activity, inactive screen time, inactive nonscreen time, and travel by location and who the activity was undertaken with. Reporting time outside the home and with peers (single or group) was related to higher levels of MVPA. While inside the home, screen and nonscreen proportions were comparable (38% and 40%, respectively), despite unique patterns (screen: boys > girls; nonscreen: girls > boys). Reporting time with both parents was associated with more nonscreen time; whereas reporting time with peer groups was associated with lower screen time. Understanding active and inactive patterns of children’s behavior outside of school hours can be very important in contributing toward the development of innovative interventions for increasing physical activity.

Abstract:
The adoption of active travel (AT) habits in adolescence, supported by positive emotions, increases the chances of a lifelong positive attitude towards AT. The aim of this study was to assess the associations between active travel and well-being (WB), and to estimate the share of AT in weekly physical activity (PA) and its contribution to meeting the weekly PA recommendations in adolescents. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire—long form and the WHO-5 questionnaire were used to assess the level of AT, weekly PA and well-being of 2805 adolescents from 36 Czech and 39 Polish schools. A higher rate of AT is only significantly associated with higher well-being in girls. However, meeting AT recommendations in combination with higher WB increased the likelihood of meeting the weekly PA recommendations in both girls and boys. AT accounts for 22.5% of weekly PA of Czech (Polish 24.2%) boys. Concerning girls, it accounts for 24.9% of weekly PA in the Czech Republic and 24.5% in Poland. Meeting AT recommendations should be part of comprehensive school-based PA programs. State, school and municipal policies in the Central European region should pay more attention to the improvement of WB and the built environment for AT in secondary school adolescents.

Abstract:
Guillen Technical Tools, producer of woodworking tools, presents an industrial problematic built through two research goals. Investigations on wood field companies and functional analysis practiced within Guillen company involve deepening and classification of her scientific and technical knowledge. This company has to integrate and suit existing wood cutting laws to her tool conception. Nevertheless, scientific community still encounters missing data and particularly about the effects of cutting geometry when milling laminated wood based products. Experimentation on the tool edge inclination angle gives the evolution trends on cutting forces, melamine cracks and tool wear. Moreover, thanks to study of infinitesimal forces, a analytical model of wood cutting forces in three dimensions can explain why higher is the tested angle, better is the tool life. Scientific and technical contribution, given by both milling tests and theoretical foundation on tooling system, prompt the Guillen company to work for the knowledge management. This exacting task has to be directed step by step. The first important objective is to integrate product lifecycle management software (PLM). Specifications of this PLM software is declined through the product to deal with, in one hand, and the process to make use of such a system, on the other hand. Product data modeling is performed by using UML. The process part take account the links between each kind of resources of the company and the working of the PLM software

The influence of the operating parameters of wood machining on the quality of a finished surface was established. Several parameters were studied related to the machining operation, to the surface preparation and to the product application. A statistical Taguschi experimental tool was implemented. The quantitative evaluation of the state of the surface was assessed by means of an artificial vision system for the determination of the pseudo-roughness of wood surfaces. Various criteria for evaluating the resulting profile were derived. The undulation Kond and roughness Krug criteria give good correlation with the different qualities of machining. The assessment of the perception of surface state and subjective quality of the finishing will be carried out by means of visual and tactile perception methods. Among the criteria which characterize the state of the surface, a criterion named Ksub was defined which present the best correlation with the results of the subjective analysis

Joints, which are essential parts of timber structures, must be designed to support expected loads during the life of the structure. The scarf joint is present in many elements, mainly in glulam structures. The behaviour before fracture of such joints is the object of this study. The cumulated damage of the joint is followed during the loading. The joint is considered as composed from wood, wood+adhesive, adhesive. A number of damage tests has been made. These tests have been purchased till fracture occurs. It is deduced from them that the adhesive part is the only one which is damaged during the loading. The corresponding damage law is identified and the model is verified with a finite elements computation

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In. L. Frank Baum’s Boy Fortune Huntersseries, penned under the pseudonym Floyd Akers, the eponymous heroes, led by Sam Steele, travel across the globe in search of adventure and treasure. During their journeys to such destinations as Panama, Egypt, China, and the South Seas, the boys frequently disparage the native cultures with which they come into contact and conflict, with many scenes demonstrating their propensity to castigate others for traits they themselves evince. Deepening this trope of cultural projection, Baum also depicts the Boy Fortune Hunters denigrating the type of homosocial relationships and communities that they themselves embrace. Each of the series’ novels ends with the rejection of heteronormative romance, thus imbuing them with a queer subtext that fractures the binaries of cultural identity the boys otherwise uphold. From these converging perspectives, Baum establishes American boyhood and adventuring as inherently queer experiences.

This chapter details the author's travel to Decatur to report about the trial of the Scottsboro boys. This trial demonstrated the making of the history of Black Americans: the fight for jury service and for equalization of rights. There was talk of a meeting in Decatur, like the one held in Birmingham, that broke the Jim Crow rulings to protest in favor of the Scottsboro boys. However, nothing was done about that meeting. The chapter recounts how the author was arrested for associating with Black reporters, and for the fact that she carried in her suitcase “Calls to Action” for the Conference on Negro Student Problems to be held at Columbia University.

Abstract This chapter looks into the proliferation of gay characters in media such as theatre, magazines, and television from the 1960s onwards. It notes how Gordon Merrick’s The Lord Won’t Mind (1970) became a Zeitgeist novel as a Stonewall-era infrastructure was developing. Likewise, After Dark (1968) became the Zeitgeist magazine that covered theatre, film, pop and classical music, cabaret, fashion, and travel alongside illustrations that are as homoerotic as The Lord Won’t Mind. The chapter then considers how the Stonewall culture was taking shape in New York. Moreover, it recognizes the theatres and musicals’ efforts to up their commitment to discovering the existence of gay people through performances such as Applause (1970), The Boys In the Band (1968), La Cage Aux Folles (1983), and Tubstrip (1973).

In Brooklyn, Italian American men enact their devotion to Saint Paulinus, also known as San Paolino, the patron saint of Nola, Italy, with their bodies. This chapter explores how men come to be a part of a devotional community through material culture: costumes, objects, tattoos. It argues that devotion is as much about bodily fluency as it is about belief. It explores how men labor in service of the saint’s feast, and how their tattoos materialize their love of the saints and each other. By playing Turk in the Dance of the Giglio and hagiographical drama of Paulinus’s life, men enact and embody their devotion and play with masculine aesthetics. The chapter also considers gender and the embodiment of devotion in men’s travel to Nola and the pedagogical and gendered processes through which boys come to be Catholic men in the community.

Abstract:
Informal studies in Vanuatu indicate that ICT training is promoted but centralized in the urban areas (Port Vila and Luganville), with 70 % of the population coming from rural communities to the urban areas just to access the ICT services. ltuani Vocational Skills Centre (VSC) was established in 2015 to take ICT services and training to rural and remote communities, targeting orphans; girls and women; and people with disabilities. Ituani VCT is the first rural training centre to be registered under the Vanuatu Qualification Authority (VQA) to deliver accredited computer courses through outreach program to target rural schools and communities called ICT to schools and communities. // The major challenges experienced in the outreach programme is the travelling situations, since the provinces and islands are scattered in six different provinces, making it difficult and costly to travel by air, sea, and land due to the bad conditions of the roads and sea. To address these challenges, blended learning approaches was identified as key ensure that the rural communities access the digital skills. Given that the trainers at Ituani did not have relevant skills for blended learning, the TVET Professional Development Online Toolkit for the Pacific was used as a basis for upskilling the staff. The Toolkit was developed through collaboration between the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and the Pacific Centre for Flexible and Open Learning for Development (PACFOLD) with funding from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade. // Project team was set up, project design workshop was held to develop a detailed project plan, relevant stakeholders were identified and included in project activities. The Toolkit was used to identify training gaps among trainers and develop strategies for upskilling the trainers. Baseline data was collected, five(5)trainers including three(3) males and two (2) females were upskilled with support from COL consultants, the trainers conducted training to fifthy (50) learners including thirty (30) women/girls and twenty (20) men/boys using the knowledge and skills acquired for blended learning, and endline data was gathered, and the Vanuatu VQA recognized skills acquired through the outreach programme.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Written contemporary sources of animal sacrificial rituals in Iron Age Scandinavia are almost non-existent. However, we have some rare descriptions about the people of northern Europe from Roman historians. Most famous of these is of course Tacitus who gives us valuable information about life in Scandinavia during the first century AD. Among other things we learn about fertility rituals carried out in sacrificial bogs and we understand the close connection between the goddess and water. Tacitus’ descriptions, as well as younger sources such as the Old Norse religious texts of Scandinavia, also clearly tell us about the magic role of different animals such as birds, wild boar, wolf and horse. In the archaeological material we try to recognize traces of religious acts that once took place. But how can we tell the difference and distinguish between the remains of ritual animal offerings on one hand and the normal kitchen waste on the other? This paper deals with some examples of horse offerings in bogs and ponds and with ritual deposits of animal bones in dry settlement contexts in Sweden. Zooarchaeological analysis gives us valuable data and a key to interpret the animal bone assemblages as evidence of animal offerings.

Abstract:
Ships travel in waves most of the time. The horsepower increase or speed loss in waves can become large in adverse sea. Speed loss needs to be compensated for by increasing the power. Moreover, the associated speed-loss can possibly not be compensated due to the limit of installed power. This will cause delays, and may even lead to safety concerns in maneuvering. Thus, there is a need for minimizing added resistance due to both economical and safety reasons. Ships with better performance in waves even with reduced power are desired. Latest researches on advanced ship optimization are taking added resistance into account. Ship bow optimization has been the main measure to reduce added resistance in waves. Based on analyzing the working principles and potential benefit of the different kinds of novel ship bows, a novel measure is proposed to reduce the ship resistance in waves is proposed. A novel measure to reduce the ship resistance in waves of existing ships by installing a simple structure at the ship bow. The structure is designed to sharpen the ship bow and therefore reduce added resistance due to wave reflection. Thus, it is suitable for the large tankers and bulk carriers, which have blunt bows. The volume above free surface was expected to reduce ship motions and the added resistance due to ship motions consequently. This measure does not change the original ship design. It can be retrofitted on existing ships fairly easily at low cost. In order to verify the benefit due to the retrofitted structure, CFD simulations are performed in both head and oblique waves, which can take 3D effect into account. Four different retrofitted structures are designed and the numerical simulations are performed with the same numerical and mesh settings in each wave condition. The CFD simulation results confirm that the novel measure can reduce ship added resistance efficiently and it also has benefits in oblique waves.

Abstract:
Teichi bog is largest intact moss bog in the Baltics states. The article considers the hydrological exchange process of the bog and surrounding areas. It plays an important role in the ecosystem, as well as a factor in stabilizing the water level, as bog peat in its natural state contains 88%-97% water. It belongs to raised bogs, since its upper layer is located above the surrounding relief. Replenishment of water resources in the Teichi Nature Reserve occurs mainly due to precipitation. In turn, the bog with surface runoff and groundwater flow returns excess moisture, thus feeding nearby streams. The reserve area and surroundings modeled in the Groundwater Vistas environment over a 35 km ? 40 km area, with a plane approximation step of 20 m. The hydrogeological model contains seven layers, 24.5 million nodes. The model includes several rivers, lakes and a wide network of drainage ditches, both embedded in the relief and attached as boundary conditions. A novelty is the assignment of different filtration coefficients to the bog. The process of water movement studied by calculating water balances, as well as by performing particle tracing simulations. Result of the research - it was found that there is an intensive interaction of the bog with nearby watercourses. The protection zone of the bog was determined using the results of tracer simulation - movement time and trajectory over a period of 25 years.

Full text
Abstract:
Approximately 300 Americans are estimated to have traveled or attempted to join the Islamic State (ISIS) as part of the group’s campaign in Syria and Iraq between 2013 and 2019. These individuals joined more than 53,000 men, women, and minors from roughly 80 countries. Often referred to as foreign (terrorist) fighters (FTF), these are individuals from third countries who travel to join a terrorist group to support its activities. In the United States (U.S.) context, the FTF designation does not denote the act of fighting itself, but rather the support of a designated foreign terrorist organization (FTO). While many of these radicalized individuals traveled alone to the conflict zone, others brought their families or formed new ones in-theater. As ISIS’ selfdeclared caliphate collapsed, many were killed, some fled to other locations, and many were captured and held by Kurdish forces. Men and some teenage boys were primarily placed in prisons, while women and minors were often moved into detention camps. Today, an estimated 10,000 male FTFs remain held in northeastern Syria including 2,000 men and boys from 60 countries outside Syria and Iraq (third country nationals, or TCNs). In addition, local camps hold close to 55,000 female FTF and FTF-affiliated family members, including roughly 10,000 TCN women and children. Some of these individuals have now been in detention for four years or more. The indefinite detention of FTF and FTF-affiliated families in northeastern Syria is not a tenable solution. In addition to clear humanitarian concerns, there is a significant security risk that the facilities’ inhabitants provide a groundswell of recruits to the still active ISIS campaign in the region. A 2022 U.S. military report puts it bluntly, “These children in the camp are prime targets for ISIS radicalization. The international community must work together to remove these children from this environment by repatriating them to their countries or communities of origin while improving conditions in the camp.” In lockstep, U.S. diplomatic leaders have made repatriation a policy priority empowered by a general domestic partisan consensus that the repatriation of FTF and FTF-affiliated families from northeastern Syria should be done expediently. Progress has been slow, while many Western nations were strongly resistant to bringing their detained citizens home, there is recent evidence for cautious optimism. Approximately 9,200 persons – including 2,700 TCNs and 6,500 Iraqis repatriated since 2019. This year, 13 countries have repatriated roughly 2,300 persons, including more than 350 TCNs. However, more work remains to be done. As of July 15, 2023, 39 U.S. persons have been officially repatriated, including both adults and minors. At least 11 additional U.S. persons have returned on their own accord, ten of whom remained in the U.S. following their return. Furthermore, the U.S. has made the decision to bring several non-U.S. persons to the U.S. to stand trial.

Abstract:
Throughout South Asia, men, women, boys, and girls are trafficked within their own countries and across international borders against their wills in what is essentially a clandestine slave trade. The Congressional Research Service and the U.S. State Department estimate that between 1 to 2 million people are trafficked each year worldwide with the majority originating in Asia. Root causes include extreme disparities of wealth, increased awareness of job opportunities far from home, pervasive inequality due to caste, class, and gender bias, lack of transparency in regulations governing labor migration, poor enforcement of internationally agreed-upon human rights standards, and the enormous profitability for traffickers. The Population Council, UNIFEM, and PATH led a participatory approach to explore activities that address the problem of human trafficking in South Asia. A meeting was held in Kathmandu, Nepal, September 11– 13, 2001 to discuss these issues. Approximately 50 representatives from South Asian institutions, United Nations agencies, and international and local NGOs attended. This report summarizes the principal points from each paper presented and captures important discussion points that emerged from each panel presentation.

Durling, P. W. Seismic reflection interpretation of the Carboniferous Cumberland Basin, Northern Nova Scotia. Natural Resources Canada/CMSS/Information Management, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.4095/331223.

Abstract:
An interpretation of approximately 1700 km of seismic data was completed in 1996. The seismic analysis, together with well information and geological map data, were used to map thirteen seismic horizons in the Cumberland Basin. Ten of the horizons were mapped only in limited areas, whereas three horizons could be mapped regionally. These are: BW (base of the Windsor Group), BP (base of the Boss Point Formation), and PG (base of the Pictou Group). The BW horizon is the deepest regional horizon mapped. The horizon generally dips southerly toward the Cobequid Highlands. It is affected by faults adjacent to the Scotsburn Anticline and the Hastings Uplift; the horizon was not recognized over part of the uplift. On the seismic reflection data, the horizon varies between 500 ms and 3200 ms two-way travel time (approximately 800-7600 metres) and rocks corresponding to this horizon do not outcrop in the basin. The BP and PG horizons can be traced to outcrop on the flanks of the major anticlines. Time structure maps of these horizons mimic the distribution of synclines mapped from outcrop geology. The BP horizon is affected by more faults and is more tightly folded than the PG horizon south of a major fault (Beckwith Fault). North of the Beckwith Fault, both horizons are essentially flat and not deformed. Several geological relationships were documented during this study. A thick (up to 1600 m) clastic unit was recognized in the central portion of the southern margin of the Cumberland Basin. It is interpreted as Windsor Group equivalent. Seismic reflections from within the Falls and Millsville conglomerates were recognized and suggest that these rocks correlate with the Windsor Group. Seismic profiles that cross the southern margin of the Cumberland Basin image parts of the asement complex to the south of the basin (Cobequid Highlands) and show reflection patterns consistent with mountain fronts. The seismic data image the folded and faulted Cobequid Highlands basement complex, which is interpreted as a thrusted structural wedge.

Michaels, Trevor. Red-tailed boa (Boa constrictor) surveys at Salt River Bay National Park, St. Croix U.S. Virgin Islands: 2023 report of activities. National Park Service, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2303799.

Full text
Abstract:
St. Croix is home to a variety of threatened and endangered (T&E) species that are at risk for predation by the invasive red-tailed boa (Boa constrictor), such as the St. Croix ground lizard (Amevia polyps), the ground-nesting least tern (Sterna antillarum), and the hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). Genetic analysis determined the original red-tailed boa population on St. Croix sourced from a single female released by a pet owner and its range expands every year. Presently, the main population of red-tailed boa is established on the west end of St. Croix and extends as far east as Salt River. One individual was found in Salt River Marina and additional sightings have occurred in Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve (SARI) more recently. This inventory aims to search for red-tailed boas in two focal areas that park staff are actively restoring. The park will use information from this inventory to develop a boa removal program and protect sensitive native species like the ground-nesting least tern, the St. Croix ground lizard and the hawksbill sea turtle nests and increase the success of restoration. Snakes are cryptic species, often occurring in low density, and utilize complex habitat patterns. To increase the likelihood of detecting red-tailed boa, the Maryland/Delaware/D.C. Wildlife Services detector dog handling team partnered with the USDA-APHIS National Detector Dog Training Center to train and develop detector dogs to assist in determining the presence/absence of red-tailed boa for this project. Canines were trained to locate red-tailed boa and indicate its presence to the handler via barking three times near the identified target. Two dog detector teams traveled to Salt River Bay National Park (SARI) in St. Croix to conduct surveys for red-tailed boa in habitats likely to contain red-tailed boa in June 2023. Habitat varied throughout the surveys. Close to the bay, mangrove forests dominated and, as elevation increased, transects took place in almost exclusively dry tropical shrub forest. Each transect was surveyed by one dog team. The canine teams had no red-tailed boa detections within SARI. Canines showed proficiency at surveying for red-tailed boa populations in SARI. Given the proximity of confirmed detections to SARI, it is likely red-tailed boa will be in the park in the future, if they are not already. Additional surveys, whether by humans, canines, or both, are recommended in areas of the park that have not been previously surveyed.
