Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to trace the evolution of paul bowles in his twinfold quest of facts and fiction. It shows how the imaginative element prevails over effective knowledge of the third world. Thus, it gives an example of a specific fiction which stands apart from north-american social and regional literary divisions. The first chapter retraces the highlights of his nomadic life. His novels and short stories are discussed in the three following chapters. They are divided according to the regions where the action takes place ; namely, latin america, algerian sahara, and morocco. The fifth chapter sorts out the determining factors in his whole work : his nihilistic exotism is a major contribution to overseas fiction. The sixth chapter deals with the author-work-reader relationships and discusses the use of arabic as part of the rhetoric. Because bowles's personality still remains nearly a complete riddle, it seemed tu us necessary to draw the line between the myth of "the drugs writer", on the one hand, and the real nature of the bonds that tied him to the beat generation, on the other. The interview we had with the author (cf. Appendice a) allowed us to improve our understanding of his present convictions

Abstract:
The American writer Paul Bowles lived in Morocco from 1947 until his death in 1999, apart from visits to North Africa, Europe, Ceylon, India and the United States during this period. Bowles’ expatriation and subsequent itineraries are quite well known, but this thesis explores his interest in – indeed, preoccupation with – mediations and a state of being ‘in-between’ in a selection of his texts: the translations, his autobiography and his fiction. Only a few commentators on Bowles’ work have noted a meta-fictional dimension in his texts, possibly because the facts of his life are so intriguing and even startling. Though not explicitly meta-fictional, in the manner of somewhat later writers, Bowles does not tell us directly how he understands the various in-betweens that may be identified in his work, and their relationship to the individual and social crises about which he writes. His work unravels the effects of crises as not directly redeemable but as mediated and over-determined in complex and subtle forms. There are no explicit postmodern textual strategies; rather, Bowles draws on the basic resources of fiction to locate, temporally and spatially, the in-between: plot, character, description and background are intertwined in order, at once, to give a work its unity and to reveal, sometimes quite incidentally, a supplementary quality that threatens to undermine that unity. Bowles’ experimentation with different genres and forms may be understood as part of this problematic, even as a form of textual travelling that leaves no single genre or form as a summation of his achievement. Using close, even – at times – deconstructive readings of a selection of texts across different genres, the thesis supplements the dominant approach to Paul Bowles’ relationship with Morocco, namely a life-and-work approach. It develops what might be called a postcolonial approach to Bowles, but, again, through close reading and an in situ use of theory that is appropriate to the texts in question, rather than through a heavy-handed theoretical approach. For instance, liminality as an encounter with the ambivalent process of hybridity is useful across Bowles’ work. Further, narrative ambivalence is helpful in the chapter on the translations, while Derrida’s exploration of a general versus a restricted economy informs my discussion of Let it Come Down. Bowles is, of course, vulnerable to a postcolonial critique that focuses on the exotic, and I share some of these concerns, as will be apparent in the following chapters. Chapter 2, for instance, deals with translation and argues that Bowles’ role moves between simple translator and facilitator to initiator and creator of the text in complex and often creative ways, especially in relation to Larbi Layachi and Mohamed Mrabet’s stories. In Chapter 3, the fictional treatment of the transitional stages in Bowles’ journey are analysed to show how Bowles enacts liminality as a non-unitary mode of understanding. The thesis concludes by arguing that there is always a pattern in Morocco. It suggests that Bowles is more subtle and more ambivalent than some of the simple oppositions might suggest. This subtlety is conveyed in the first part of my title, ‘Inhabiting the exotic’.

Abstract:
The expatriate american writer, paul bowles, has written four novels and around sixty short stories, many of which depict hapless american tourists wandering through a "less civilized" country in search of excitement, pleasure, or enlightenment. They invariably meet their doom, generally in a very horrible manner. Although we were extremely impressed by the chrystalline clarity of mr. Bowles' prose, we were perplexed as to the meaning of the pessimistic outlook pervading all of his works. Because of the dreamlike quality of much of his writing, we chose to investigate the author's use of dreams in order to elucidate the significance of the considerable violence encountered throughout his works. Using freud's method of dream interpretation as well as a general psychoanalytical approach, we found that much of the anxiety and hatred underlying bowles' fiction can be traced to the simultaneous desire for and fear of the mother figure

Abstract:
This thesis aims to reposition the critical understanding of Paul Bowles, away from the traditional North African focus that has guided interpretations of his work, and place him instead within an interdisciplinary framework that is particularly attentive to his mid-century American context. Focussing on Bowles’ initial collection of short stories, The Delicate Prey, it investigates its reception by contemporary critics, and its place within the wider cultural and political climate of postwar America, with specific attention to ideas of freedom and containment. Turning to his involvement in the surrealist movement during the 1930s in Europe, it then suggests ways in which Bowles’ fiction reworked aspects of surrealism within a new aesthetic framework. This framework was also indebted to Bowles’ earlier career as a classical composer, and the third chapter of this thesis focuses on the influence of his musical career on the form and content of his short fiction. Finally, the thesis considers Bowles’ conceptualisation of the short story as a genre, and the ways in which his writing used form to disrupt his readers’ wider ideas about fiction and society. Throughout, this thesis positions Bowles within an alternative literary tradition, arguing that Bowles deliberately drew on practice from visual arts and music in order to develop a distinctive literary idiom. It considers why Bowles’ short fiction failed to find the same support from critics that it found with other writers, and offers a model for understanding this reaction and, ultimately, why the initial critical response has continued to guide the interpretation of his work.

Abstract:
The trumpet and electronics genre of music has been in existence since 1965. While various dissertations have discussed other composers and their works in this field, there is still a need for a treatise exploring appropriate performance practice for the electroacoustic trumpet music of Meg Bowles. There has been no study of the compositional process nor trumpet techniques required for performance of these works and other electronic compositions. This dissertation will study the compositions for trumpet and electronics by Bowles, develop strategies for performing these works, and explore compositional techniques used to create them. Interviews have been conducted between the author and composer (Meg Bowles), as well as the author and collaborating performer (David Bilger). In addition, existing interviews with the composer are included from journals and websites. This document is presented in two parts: Part I, “Introduction to Music for Trumpet and Electronics,” “Biography of Meg Bowles,” “Compositional Techniques,” “Night Sun Journey,” “Places Where Rivers Meet,” “Shapeshifter,” and “Twilight Embrace.” The second part of this dissertation contains materials which are pertinent to the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree and includes recital programs, program notes, and vita.

Abstract:
Paul bowles, the american novelist, has been living in tangier (morocco) for more than forty years. The sheltering sky is about the gradual descent into hell of an american couple in the north african desert. These travellers, in search of exoticism and without landmarks, discover a culture which seems hermetic to them. They cannot understand the mentality and the culture of this land. The arabic characters in this first major work - he had edited only poems before settling in tangier - are present but remind one of the status of indians in early american literature : they say little and are difficult to understand. Unlike the first novel, the two americans in the spider's house polly and stenham, who meet each other for the first time in fez (morocco), try to understand the arabo-islamic culture. They get to know the young amar, a typical representative of a disappearing traditional society. Through the discussions between these americans and amar, paul bowles expresses his concern about the future of this culture, threatened in his eyes, by modernity which destroys spiritual values. As is known, the arabic culture cannot be conceived of, at least in north africa, without referring to islam. Paul bowles explores through amar's mentality this duality between arabity and islamity but he goes further, trying to highlight the vestiges of a preislamic culture. Thus, to him arabity consists not only of the historic past, the arabic culture and islamic religion, but also of the animist and berber contribution. This bowlesian conception of arabity is one of the major themes of midnight mass, where the novelist depicts faithfully a traditional society exposed to changes which assail it on all hands. His outlook on the arabic society, precisely the moroccan one, is sometimes critical, sometimes nostalgic. He is concerned about the spiritual values which are abandoned in favour of materialist ones. Paul bowles has translated numerous moroccan oral stories in view of preserving popular culture and arabity thus, he translated under the title for bread alone, the famous autobiography, of mohammed choukri. He uses cultural references from the arabo- islamic culture to elaborate his fiction. The influence of this culture on the writer is great, but he keeps asserting his americanity

Full text
Abstract:
En conclusion, leurs textes fictionnels sont, en vérité, des témoignages pessimistes d'une réalité, le reflet d'une société coloniale, raciste dans son essence, qui annihile toute relation authentique entre races culturellement diferentes; ABSTRACT:Diálogos com a alteridade nas obras literárias de Albert Camus e de Paul Bowles offers an analysis, inspired by post-colonial theories, of Western European interaction with Maghrebian alterity in some moments of these authors' literary works which portray a limited place and time: Northern Africa during and after the Second World War as well as the period of decolonization which followed. In distinct analytical chapters, this thesis focuses on colonialist discourse within the different dialogues with the "other". This approach allows a more detailed interpretation and enables conclusions which corroborate the existence of analogies among these dialogues. After having examined the narratives of Camus, several elements of colonialist discourse became evident. Despite his critique of colonial policy, his depiction reveals a concealment of History and a certain reductionism in its perception of reality. Furthermore, his fiction exposes an emotional disingenuousness in relation to Algeria and the French colonial occupation. In fact, his work expresses an interaction based on colonialist biases and a depiction as realistic as idealized which confirms Camus as a writer torn apart by the forces of History. The exegesis of Bowles' fiction observes how his dialogues with alterity echo certain stereotypes of Orientalist discourse. Furthermore, it unveils his fascination with the Northern Africa geographical and human landscapes, which appear to be a locus for his search for identity and eventually of its disintegration; the Muslim alterity, which the Author presents as an alternative to Western nihilism. Apart from his ideologically stigmatized discourse, the lack of objectivity in his narratives is notable. This reveals a nostalgic leaning towards a certain geopolitical ideal and the defence of a socio-political status quo which participates of colonialist ideology. In conclusion, this analytical journey confirms the existence of a discourse which, despite the preconceptions within its Orientalist imagery, does not allow any firm conclusion to be drawn on possible racist posturing on the part of Camus or Bowles. In truth, the authors' narratives bear pessimistic witness to a reality, a reflection of an essentially racist colonial society which invalidates the possibility of any genuine relationship between culturally different ethnic groups.

This study is concerned with obsessional neurosis and emotional dynamics: A narrative analysis of Calvino (2001) and Bowles (1943/1984). The overall objective was to investigate the affective aspects present in the dynamics of obsessional neurosis. To conduct the research were made of classic literature dealing with the theme of obsessional neurosis by psychoanalytic perspective; the design of this study is qualitative document. Material organized through production of charts and analyzed following the hermeneutic. This research is justified by the academic relevance, as there is a need to produce knowledge on the subject given that this subject has few studies; mainly on the affective aspects of the dynamics of obsessional neurosis, not yet understood in all its dimensions, as well as to allow a possible reflection to professionals working in clinical in the management of patients suffering from obsessional neurosis. The main outcomes were: infiltration ambivalence, doubt, need for control, emotional poverty, magical thinking, degradation for desire in need, doing and undoing rituals, confusion between thought and action.

Abstract:
This thesis shows how Bowles's style and themes have developed from a number of sources, including Dada and Surrealism and Edgar Allan Poe, but moved beyond them to a writing which is unique and radical. The thesis traces the progress of Bowles's work from his examination of representative Western characters undergoing immensely testing journeys into their deepest selves, to his fascination with altered states of perception and Moroccan culture. It argues that Bowles has recognised a double division within humanity; from the natural world itself, and from a true and authentic relationship to our unconscious. As a result of this double division, the self and society which Bowles examines are distorted and corrupted. The thesis explores how Bowles has consistently worked to undermine the system of values and perceptions which permit such divisions to exist. In order to do this, he attacks the self, as the centre of our own importance within the world, and society, because it conditions us into an acceptance of values and ways of seeing life. Much of his fiction aims to disintegrate and destroy these two key areas in order that he might expose their failings and suggest alternative ways of existing. In particular, Bowles has grown more interested in preserving elements of Moroccan culture as remnants of a more open, less rational way of life. This thesis, therefore, examines the final balance between a destructive urge and a desparate need to preserve and learn from what remains when the distorted and corrupt has been stripped away.

Abstract:

Heal, Benjamin J. "Transatlantic crosscurrents : European influences and dissent in the works of Paul Bowles and William S. Burroughs (1938-1992)." Thesis, University of Kent, 2016. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/57120/.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the European influences on the works of Paul Bowles and William S. Burroughs, focusing on the themes, styles, techniques and preoccupations derived from Existentialism, Surrealism and Primitivism. Their texts, informed by their interest in the transatlantic intellectual currents of the time and non-American influences, represent a dissenting voice against the commonly and officially held values of the post-World War II United States and Western ideological power structures, and offer an insight into the development of a twentieth century American cultural identity. Examining Bowles and Burroughs in parallel gives a unique insight into their differences and striking similarities with regard to their experiences of expatriation and European sensibilities. Analysis of the historical context and material history of the publication, underlying influences, themes, techniques and preoccupations of their works reveals a deeper political engagement than has been previously shown. Bowles and Burroughs participated in a broad transatlantic dialogue of ideas, as reflected in the geopolitical and chronopolitical similarities of their works. The thesis focuses on their use of similar themes such as alienation, derived from Sartrean Existentialism, and their shared existential negativity toward life in the United States. It is argued that their style and method of indirect ideological expression, derived from Existentialism, enables a form of expression that can effectively and covertly interrogate American identity. Their use of experimental techniques drawn directly from the politically charged European based art movements of Dada and Surrealism, such as automatism, is shown to create a politically useful distance between the work and the author, while Surrealist preoccupations with shock, intoxication and violence evoke a closer relationship between the work and the reader. The notion of 'primitivism' and a persistent interest in 'primitive cultures' that intersects with representations of sexuality and a rejection of modernity in their works is examined as a reflection of their negative attitudes toward the modernism represented by the United States. Examining the parallels between their works and the development of film noir also reveals an engagement with a broad transatlantic exchange of ideas, styles and techniques across media. Their experimentation with the constructed nature of authorship, which developed through literary practice in their later works is shown to interrogate the concurrent poststructuralist theories of authorship. The historical contexts, influences of European intellectual cross-currents and range of connections between Bowles and Burroughs combine to make a compelling case that their works are politically charged, transatlantic in style and technique, and stridently significant in the history of English language literature and our understanding of contemporary American and European cultures.

And the world at full speed, with its re-engineering and mass production, would bring hope to men. It was possible to believe in the prosperity of technique as a compensation for the gap imposed by the Second World War. In a blend of sepia and black and white, reminder of a bygone cinema, the screen is filled as progress, speed and the principle of quantitative values are announced. Industries and factories, cars and trams, dynamism and rush, skyscrapers and neon: here is the synthesis of the universe portraited in the beginning of The sheltering sky (1990), by Bernardo Bertolucci. As colours invade the screen, through a sequence of shots, as they indicate new happenings, the essence of all that excess was made as though it was pulled away with tweezers: Port, Kit and Tunner would lead, starting from that diegetic instant, not only their own peculiarities, but also the universalization they fitted in. Thus, in the face on the mentioned anticipating elements of a leading image for the awake senses of the spectators, we seek to analyze Bertolucci s film in the meanderings of its own historical contextualization in which the characters are inserted, since they would be sharp representation of a recent second post-war, and they saw their own rebuilding in the progress of technique and therefore, through this idealization, they walked forward searching for the compensation of intrinsic gaps. But it is clear that the characters behaviour will not be restricted to the 50s but rather on the contrary, once in earlier circunstances the individuals can be seen in the look for a path, a way out from their loneliness or any other aspect concerning the sense of their existence. In the same way, nowadays , by the means of a visible technology serving a market in constant renovation, anchors reshaped in new disguises are evident, remoulding the idea of new , are evident, and these are constantly committed to the compensation of an existencial void, of a crossing in the quest for a hold for the individual. So, starting from the very genesis of the film precursor tracks common to the creative progress, of which there are no certainties, but intuition, deduction sensitive to the heterogeneous remittance of art, the route narrated in each segment of the film will be establishing itself gradually, always by the light of a methodology fit to outline each character by their own action in order to insert them in the categories given by the diegesis itself, such as travellers, tourist and those who would be in the simultaneity of those determinations, which we can name passengers all of this indicating different manners of seeing the world. Alongside whit those classifications, it is sought to establish the very path of the aesthetic element through the trails of those individuals, first in a fleeting principle, that is, easily falling in forgetfulness, through the linkage of a time in synchrony with the past of tradition, with the present of its fulfillments and with the future pointing at wherever there may be a look of reception. Thus, between the ephemerity of things and the firmness of senses, between men s trends in the front of their supposed arts and of the perennial building of the individual mirroring himself in the immortality of the artistic object, this analysis of the film The sheltering sky begins.

Grizenko, Marisa Katherine. "Two drunk ladies : the modernist drunk narrative and the female alcoholic in the fiction of Jean Rhys and Jane Bowles." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/43579.

Abstract:
This thesis takes as its starting point the culturally potent figure of the alcoholic modernist, who, heroically facing existential despair, is predominantly gendered as male. Pointing to the absence of the female alcoholic as writer and subject in critical accounts of modernism, I argue that a drunk narrative, written by and about women, exists alongside the prototypical male narrative, and call for a re-examination of the modernist writer‘s relationship to alcohol. Exploring the historical and cultural contexts that have contributed to the gendering of alcoholism and drinking practices in general, as well as the gendering of the modernist artist in particular, I then consider how writers Jean Rhys and Jane Bowles articulate their vision of the drinking woman. Rhys‘s 1939 novel Good Morning, Midnight sees protagonist Sasha Jansen employing the discursive category of female drunk as a tool of resistance in Paris‘ patriarchal and capitalist urban economy. I situate her as tactically capitalizing, in a de Certeauan fashion, on her abjection and visibility. Bowles‘s 1943 novel Two Serious Ladies extends Sasha‘s individual drunkenness to an overarching, abstracted drunkenness that reflects the worldview of the text. I trace how drunkenness functions thematically and linguistically in the two female protagonists‘ existential quests. While identifying existing gaps in the scholarship, I also hope to gesture to rich areas of potential research and model a reading practice that explores female interventions in the male modernist drunk narrative.

Paul Bowles and His Early Mentors presents soundly edited, contextually annotated, and mostly unpublished letters, notes, and postcards from Paul Bowles to Gertrude Stein, Aaron Copland, and Virgil Thomson. Influenced by the life-in-letters convention, it tells a story of Bowles's life from his letters to three of his principal mentors; it also serves as a rumination on Bowles's place among other writers in his generation and in the historical tradition of American expatriate writing. The sampling of letters accounts for Bowles's development as a writer by focusing on a period of time (1930 to 1943) when nevertheless he thought of himself primarily as a composer. Of the 140 letters contained in this collection, only 36 have been published. As a result it serves to strengthen the nexus between literaty, musical, and biographical studies of Bowles. The first three chapters consist of Bowles's early career, when his chief concerns were travel and artistic expression. This period constitutes the body of this edition, as it provides a thorough study of an important period in his life. Toward the end of the second chapter we see the emergence of Thomson as a stronger mentor than Stein and Copland. The third chapter has Bowles meeting his future wife Jane, and then their early adventures together. The concluding sections (Interim and Coda) are supplementary meditations: the Interim culminates with Bowles's settling in Tangier, and his literary success with The Sheltering Sky and The Delicate Prey and Other Stories; the Coda includes a sampling of letters to Thomson from 1955 to 1983. This volume contributes to Bowles scholarship by not only making available unpublished letters to a few prominent correspondents, but also by revealing some under-appreciated and undocumented details that will allow us to make judgments as to competing interpretations about Bowles's life and work. The essence of this edition is the arc of true friendship and the dynamics of mentorship, and the mutual appreciation among geniuses remains a force in the study of his letters.

Abstract:
This thesis looks to explore the musical Cabaret through a critical, historical and political lens, with particular focus on Sally Bowles, questioning the creation and agency of this character in contrast with the political and societal values of various productions. Using a socio-political analysis, this thesis discusses the important relationship between politics and theater, using the pro-choice abortion movements of the 1960's as a way to understand Sally Bowles as a complex device for political and social commentary.

Full text
Abstract:
Research within regulatory fit framework has shown that athletes perform better when in a state of regulatory fit. This state occurs when there is a match between a player’s chronic regulatory focus and the framing of the given task. In a counterbalanced within-groups experimental design, bowling players (N = 34) performed various rounds of the same ecologically-valid pin-setting configuration under two different experimental conditions: in a promotion manner (aspiration to make the spare) and in a prevention manner (obligation not to miss the spare). Results showed no significant relationship between regulatory fit and bowling performance. Findings are discussed in terms of task difficulty and experimental manipulation in relation to regulatory fit theory.

Full text
Abstract:
The sport of cricket is challenged by three formats of the game; each with varying workload demands. The most recent format is T20 cricket, first played internationally in 2005. Further to this, elite performers are often required to play for upwards of four different professional teams across the year; increasing the complexities in player workload management and other sports science-related support. Fast bowlers have greater overall match-play demands than other playing positions in cricket. Wearable microtechnology for tracking external load in athletes is common practice. Despite microtechnology enabling meaningful analyses of workload beyond routinely reported metrics, little application has occurred within fast bowling. The high injury risk in fast bowlers is well established, yet the intensive demands on these athletes remain poorly understood. The overall aim of this program of research was to use scientific literature to first understand the interaction of workload, injury and performance in elite level fast bowlers and then improve the understanding of workload management using advances in wearable microtechnology. The program of research in this thesis “with publication” first generated studies identifying the problem (a systematic review). The four subsequent chapters of original research built on the review to profile the match-play and training demands of cricketers, explore the variability of wearable microtechnology outputs during fast bowling, and finally develop and quantify an innovative means to monitor and manage workload within the specific demands of fast bowling in cricket. Although monitoring acute and chronic workloads of fast bowlers remains the most ideal method for identifying preparedness and injury likelihood in fast bowlers, complexities exist that make the systematic prescription of bowling workloads difficult. The results confirmed that the external load of cricket match-play and training varied between fast bowlers and non-fast bowlers. Furthermore, external loads experienced by 26 elite performing cricketers differentially affected the neuromuscular, endocrine, and perceptual fatigue responses of these players. Outputs from wearable microtechnology provided adequate stability across the performance of elite fast bowlers. These outputs were comparable with routinely used measures of fast bowling performance and intensity. Algorithms linking microtechnology outputs demonstrated good sensitivity in detecting fast bowling events in elite cricketers across competition (99.5%) and training (99.0%). The specificity of detecting fast bowling events decreased in competition (74.0%) however, remained high during training (98.1%). With the ability to automatically detect fast bowling events, metrics of bowling intensity can be explored more rigorously. Outputs from the gyroscope and accelerometers in the wearable technology provided strong associations with prescribed bowling intensity. Collectively, this thesis has highlighted the challenges of applied research in cricket, and more specifically the capacity to more objectively monitor external load in cricket fast bowlers. Wearable microtechnology has the potential to advance and refine measures of bowling workload and provide a greater depth of support for cricket fast bowlers.

Shorter, Kathleen A. "The pathomechanics of shoulder injuries in cricket bowlers." Thesis, University of Chichester, 2011. http://eprints.chi.ac.uk/808/.

Full text
Abstract:
Injury surveillance research has established that over 20 % of cricket injuries are related to the upper limb (Leary & White, 2000; Ranson & Gregory, 2008; Stretch, 2003), with bowlers associated altered rotational joint range of motion (Aginsky et al., 2004, BellJenje & Gray, 2005 and Stuelcken et al., 2008). As the applicability of such observations is limited, the aim of this thesis was to provide researchers with a greater understanding of the pathomechanics of shoulder injuries afflicting cricket bowlers though quantifying associated musculoskeletal adaptations and subsequently through the development and validation of a bowling specific kinematic model, establish the influence these may impart on bowling technique. The use of diagnostic ultrasound within the first experimental study in a cohort of bowlers without a history of shoulder injury, established a high prevalence of supraspinatus (45 %) and subscapularis (50 %) tendon pathology, providing insight into common musculotendinous pathology and adaptations that are indicative of the future potential of injury. Data presented within the second study aimed to first quantify the kinematics of the shoulder during the bowling delivery in relation to humerothoracic motion and, second, the influence of rotation sequence to described humerothoracic motion was investigated. Findings established that whilst the bowling delivery was associated with large variability, future research must acknowledge the contribution of the scapula to shoulder motion. As such, due to the complexity of quantifying shoulder motion during cricket bowling, the following three experimental studies evaluated and developed the CSBT shoulder model through modifying current methods. The mCAST method in conjunction with an acromion cluster, was established to not only reduce resultant RMSE associated with scapula landmarks by up to 0.016 m, but also increase the repeatability and robustness of reconstructing GHJ location using the SCoRE method. The emphasis of the final experimental study was to apply the CSBT shoulder model to establish the contribution of individual rotator cuff muscles to shoulder joint stability and, to identify phases of the bowling delivery which increases the risk of injury. This case study established that during the bowling delivery the shoulder experiences large multi-planar forces placing demand on musculature, in particular supraspinatus and Subscapularis to stabilise the joint. These findings in conjunction with those of the first experimental study, not only identify structures at risk of injury but also establish that for the effective formulation of injury prevention strategies the bowling delivery must be investigated in its entirety.

Forrest, Mitchell Robert Loaring. "Exercise-based injury prevention for community-level adolescent pace bowlers." Thesis, Forrest, Mitchell Robert Loaring (2020) Exercise-based injury prevention for community-level adolescent pace bowlers. PhD thesis, Murdoch University, 2020. https://researchrepository.murdoch.edu.au/id/eprint/56720/.

Full text
Abstract:
Sporting injuries are on the rise and wide-scale injury prevention strategies are needed in community-level sport. Research indicates that community-level adolescent pace bowlers could benefit from exercise-based injury prevention programs (IPPs), however, a specific program for this group has not been developed. The primary aim of this thesis was to therefore develop a specific IPP for community-level adolescent pace bowlers and investigate if this program could modify risk factors for injury in this population. The Translating Research into Injury Prevention Practice (TRIPP) framework guided the progression of studies in this thesis. In Chapter 2, risk factors for injury in adolescent pace bowlers were systematically reviewed. The review included all experimental and observational studies that reported risk factors for non-contact injuries in pace bowlers aged 12-19 years. The Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale was used to assess risk of bias. In Chapter 3 the various barriers and facilitators to program implementation at the community-level were identified and used to guide the development of an IPP that was appropriate for community-level adolescent pace bowlers. In Chapters 4 and 5 a cluster-randomised controlled trial was employed to examine the efficacy of this IPP to modify neuromuscular risk factors and alter bowling kinematics. Eligible pace bowlers from eight cricket organisations (clusters) were recruited and then randomised into either an intervention group or control group. The intervention group completed an eight-week IPP while the control continued their normal cricket activity. Either side of the eight-week intervention period all participants attend a baseline and follow-up session where measures of muscle strength, muscle endurance, dynamic neuromuscular control and bowling kinematics were assessed. The treatment effect of the IPP was estimated with linear mixed models. Chapter 2 identified several potentially modifiable risk factors for injury in adolescent pace bowlers and these included; excessive lateral trunk flexion while bowling, kinematics of pelvis and hip while bowling, reduced trunk endurance, and poor lumbo-pelvic-hip movement control. There were conflicting results amongst the studies which investigated the mixed technique, bowling workload, and quadratus lumborum asymmetry. Among the five cross-sectional studies, risk of bias was high and very high. Of the 11 cohort studies, three were rated as low risk of bias and eight as high risk of bias. With the information gathered in Chapter 2, an exercise program to modify risk factors was developed in Chapter 3. The program included exercises to improve; eccentric strength of the external shoulder rotators, hip adductor strength, eccentric hamstring strength, dynamic neuromuscular control of the lumbo-pelvic region and lower-limbs, and trunk extensor endurance. Chapter 3 also considered the various facilitators to program implementation at the community-level, and therefore included exercises that were; simple to learn, non-reliant on expensive equipment, and time-efficient. In Chapter 4 the efficacy of this newly developed IPP to modify neuromuscular risk factors was assessed. There were significant treatment effects (estimated marginal mean with 95% confidence intervals) favouring the intervention group for; isokinetic shoulder strength (90°/s) (0.05 Newton meters per kilogram (N.m/kg); 0.02 to 0.09), isokinetic hamstring strength (60°/s) (0.32 N.m/kg; 0.13 to 0.50), hip adductor strength dominant side (0.40 N.m/kg; 0.26 to 0.55) and non-dominant side (0.33 N.m/kg; 0.20 to 0.47), Star Excursion Balance Test reach distance dominant side (3.80 percent of leg length (%LL); 1.63 to 6.04) and non-dominant side (3.60 %LL; 1.43 to 5.78), and back endurance (20.4 seconds; 4.80 to 36.0). No differences were observed for isokinetic shoulder strength (180°/s) (p=0.09), isokinetic hamstring strength (180°/s) (p=0.07), lumbo-pelvic stability (p=0.90), and single leg squat knee valgus angle (dominant p=0.06, non-dominant p=0.15). In Chapter 5 there were significant treatment effects favouring the intervention group for shoulder counter-rotation (-3.75°; -7.19 to -0.32) and lateral trunk flexion relative to pelvis (-2.24°; -3.97 to -0.52). There were however, no significant between-group differences for; global angles of lateral trunk flexion at front foot contact (FFC) (1.2°; -2.5 to 4.8), global angles of lateral trunk flexion ball release (BR) (-0.5°; -3.0 to 2.0), pelvis rotation FFC (0.9°; -4.0 to 2.2), pelvis rotation BR (-1.1°; -5.7 to 3.6), front hip angle FFC (1.6°; -3.6 to 6.7), front hip angle BR (-1.6°; -5.0 to 1.9), front knee angle FFC (-1.1°; -4.5 to 2.3), front knee angle BR (1.7°; -5.6 to 9.1), or ball velocity (1.1 km/h; -7.5 to 9.7). This thesis demonstrates that the TRIPP framework can used to successfully guide the process of injury prevention in community-level adolescent pace bowlers. The IPP in this thesis was also able to modify several neuromuscular and biomechanical risk factors, however a number of measures were not altered. Future research is needed to refine the current IPP and investigate if it can reduce injury risk in a real-world setting.

Abstract:

Of the many waveforms the bowed string can assume, theso-called "Helmholtz motion" (Helmholtz 1862) gives the fullestsound in terms of power and overtone richness. The developmentof this steady-state oscillation pattern can take manydifferent paths, most of which would include noise caused bystick-slip irregularities of the bow-string contact. Of thefive papers included in the thesis, the first one shows, notsurprisingly, that tone onsets are considered superior when theattack noise has a very limited duration. It was found, however, that in this judgment thecharacterof the noise plays an important part, as thelistener’s tolerance of noise in terms of duration isalmost twice as great for "slipping noise" as for "creaks" or"raucousness" during the tone onsets. The three followingpapers contain analyses focusing on how irregular slip-sticktriggering may be avoided, as is quite often the case inpractical playing by professionals. The fifth paper describesthe triggering mechanism of a peculiar tone production referredto as "Anomalous Low Frequencies" (ALF). If properly skilled, aplayer can achieve pitches below the normal range of theinstrument. This phenomenon is related to triggering wavestaking "an extra turn" on the string before causing thestring’s release from the bow-hair grip. Since transverseand torsional propagation speeds are both involved, twodifferent sets of "sub-ranged" notes can be produced this way.In the four last papers wave patterns are analysed andexplained through the use of computer simulations.

Abstract:
This project is a site specific based exploration into the boundaries between the domestic home and the navigation of the anxious corporeal body which dwells in the space. These connections open up ways of mapping anxiety brought on through intrusive thoughts surrounding contamination (in relation to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). The corporal navigation of the domestic is fuelled by the thoughts and their control over the notions of fear and anxiety surrounding the transferring of contaminated material from the external temporal world (dust and organic matter) into the internal sterile environment through movement or fissures in the fabric of the dwelling. The project explores the notions of the domestic space being formed into a container for the intrusive thoughts through physical acts of decontaminating, containment, sealing and expelling the elements of dirt; the body and the home become a hybrid entity alluding to the extreme control which forms and takes over the domestic space.

Fryman, Ashley Rose. "Assessment of bone mineral density in forearms of collegiate ten-pin bowlers." Thesis, Wichita State University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/3306.

Full text
Abstract:
Studies have demonstrated the effect of dominance on bone mineral density (BMD) of both weight bearing and non-weight bearing limbs and the effect of physical activity and specific sports, such as tennis, gymnastics, and volleyball on bmd of the predominantly used limb(s) versus non-used limb(s). Like tennis and volleyball, the Wichita State University (WSU) bowling team performs a high volume of repetitive use of their bowling arm on a regular basis. This is the first study to investigate the effect of ten-pin bowling at an elite collegiate level on BMD of the bowling arm compared to the non-bowling arm. Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry Unit (Hologic QDR 4500W Elite) was used to assess BMD of bilateral arms (whole body scan) and bilateral forearms (forearm scan) of 25 (N=13 males, N=12 females) collegiate bowlers (20.72 ± 1.46 yrs). In this study, the forearm scans showed significantly greater (p<0.05) BMD in the bowling arm (0.635 ± .05 g·cm-2) compared to the non-bowling arm (0.618 ± .06 g·cm-2) of both male and female bowlers. However, when separated by gender, the female bowling arm showed a significantly greater difference between arms (4.1 ± 3.1% difference, p<0.05) and compared to the males (1.5 ± 2.6% difference, p<0.05). Whole body scans of the left and right arms were also assessed and similar results were observed in the bowling arm compared to the non-bowling arms of males (3.81 ± 5.19%, p<0.05) and females (4.15 ± 2.54%, p<0.05). In conclusion, the female elite level collegiate ten-pin bowlers demonstrate an increased BMD in the bowling forearm when compared to the non-bowling forearm.

Berrill, James. "Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome in patients with inflammatory bowel disease." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2014. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/61734/.

Full text
Abstract:
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are both chronic relapsing intestinal disorders. Their symptom profiles overlap in terms of abdominal discomfort and altered bowel habit. Meta-‐analysis of patients with IBD demonstrates that 25-‐46% of those in clinical remission have symptoms compatible with IBS. These patients report lower quality of life scores compared to their asymptomatic counterparts. There is uncertainty as to the cause of these symptoms, and concern for the influence they may exert on clinical management. The work described in this thesis investigated the nature of IBS-‐type symptoms occurring in patients with IBD, examined potential diagnostic tools to distinguish between the respective conditions, and conducted a therapeutic trial for the management of functional symptoms in this setting. IBS-‐type symptoms were observed to occur more commonly in female IBD patients, were associated with high anxiety levels, and occurred in patients with no active inflammation as confirmed by a normal faecal calprotectin level. These findings are characteristic of irritable bowel syndrome, and suggest that this disorder may cause persistent symptoms during IBD remission. Two potential biomarkers of IBS were investigated. The first explored a hypothesis that IBS may be a systemic condition caused by the absorption of toxic metabolites produced by the bacterial fermentation of dietary carbohydrates. This mechanism would potentially explain both the gastrointestinal and the systemic symptoms that are observed in patients with IBS. It was proposed that toxic metabolites may covalently modify albumin in patients with IBS, however on investigation of this theory there was no significant difference observed between the plasma samples of IBS patients, IBD patients and healthy controls. The presence of systemic symptoms in patients with IBS and IBD was associated with higher anxiety levels. Cognitive function was also assessed as a potential biomarker of IBS following anecdotal reports that IBS patients experience impaired concentration. However no significant difference between IBS patients, IBD patients, and healthy controls was identified. Concurrent mood disorders, in particular depression, were associated with impaired performance of specific tasks in patients with IBD. A randomised-‐controlled trial of a mindfulness-‐based psychological intervention was performed in IBD patients with IBS-‐type symptoms or high perceived stress levels. Sub-‐group analysis demonstrated a significant improvement in quality of life in the intervention group in those patients who were experiencing IBS-‐type symptoms. Overall, these findings support the theory that IBS can cause persistent symptoms in IBD patients who are in remission. However, until the molecular mechanisms underlying IBS are identified and reliable biomarkers are developed, a systematic diagnostic approach is required to evaluate these patients. IBS-‐type symptoms in IBD patients represent a therapeutic target to improve quality of life and further trials of psychological intervention, medication and dietary modification are required.

Abstract:
We measured molecules carried as cargos on the abundant blood protein human serum albumin (1) in patients with newly diagnosed, untreated type II diabetes (T2D) compared to healthy controls (HC). The HSA cargos measured included lipids, minerals, peptides, and metabolites. Differences in these cargos associated with T2D were measured, using chromatography and mass spectrometry, seeking to identify biological markers that may enhance early diagnosis of T2D. An extrinsic fluorescent probe of binding sites on HSA, ANS, revealed that there were distinct differences in loading of hydrophobic cargo between HC and systemic lupus erythematosus, T2D, and Lyme disease plasma samples. A decrease in mineral levels on HSA was also measured in T2D plasma compared to healthy control plasma, using ICP-MS. Zinc ions showed the largest changes and were reduced three fold in T2D. The hydrophobic cargo of HSA revealed a decrease in HSA-associated fatty acids in T2D, measured by GCMS using negative chemical ionization. In this same GCMS study new classes of glycine-containing compounds bound to HSA were found to be increased by two fold in T2D in the hydrophobic extract of HSA. A metabolomic study using RP-uHPLC QTOF MS in both positive and negative ionization modes examined differences in the hydrophobic extract of whole plasma in T2D compared to healthy controls. Increased levels of branched chain amino acids were found in T2D compared to HC. Decreased levels of phosphatidylcholines, phosphatidylethanol amines, and vitamin D3 metabolites were found in T2D compared to HC. The results suggests that the HSA cargo in T2D, SLE, and other disease states, may provide new diagnostic markers and lead to deeper understanding of the mechanisms of disease in humans.

Abstract:
Mexican spotted owls (Strix occidentalis lucida) are nocturnal avian predators that are widely distributed in the southwest U.S. and northern Mexico. In 1993, the lucida subspecies was listed as threatened in response to concern over the loss of forest habitats to which the owl is widely associated. However, in the northwestern corner of their range spotted owls primarily inhabit steep-walled rocky canyons. Owl populations inhabiting this region have received less attention than populations using forests, although, canyon populations are important to the persistence of the subspecies, and are subject to different environmental pressures. I investigated the breeding ecology and home range characteristics of Mexican spotted owls within Grand Canyon which supports both forest and rocky canyon habitat. During the study from 2004 - 2006, female fecundity (mean = 0.86), calculated as the number of female fledglings per paired female, was relatively high compared to values reported previously for Mexican spotted owls. Five adult male owls were radio-tracked during the breeding season. I used minimum convex polygons and fixed kernel estimates to describe home range size (mean = 356 ha and 372 ha, respectively) and generated adaptive kernels to describe areas of concentrated use within home ranges. I used GIS to describe vegetation and geology cover types associated with owl use areas. This information was used to determine if spotted owls used landscape cover types disproportionately to their availability. At a landscape level, spotted owl telemetry locations were positively correlated with piñyon-juniper vegetation that occurred within canyons as well as with the Redwall and Muav geologic layers (p

Abstract:
Cricket is one of Australia's most popular sports, both in terms of participation rates and spectator interest. However, as with all sports, participation in cricket can be associated with a risk of injury. Injury surveillance in Australia and internationally has consistently identified fast bowlers as the players at the greatest risk of injury. This clearly establishes fast bowlers as the priority group for continued risk factor research. The primary aim of this thesis is to describe the epidemiology of repetitive microtrauma injuries and identify the risk factors for these injuries to male adolescent and adult fast bowlers. The program of research consists of three sequential prospective cohort studies, which were conducted over four cricket seasons. The rate of injury was high in all these studies, with nearly half of the 305 bowlers sustaining an injury. The first of the three studies, which was conducted over three seasons, recruited 95 adult first-class fast bowlers and investigated bowling workload as a risk factor for injury. The findings suggested that there were thresholds for both low and high workload, beyond which the risk of injury increased. The second study recruited 47 adolescent high performance fast bowlers for one season, and identified a significant association between high bowling workload and injury. Based on the results of these two studies, workload guidelines for adult and adolescent fast bowlers are described in detail in this thesis. The third study expanded on the first two workload studies and concurrently investigated a range of potential injury risk factors relating to bowling workload, physical characteristics and bowling technique. A total of 91 adult and adolescent high performance fast bowlers participated in the third study for one season. Two independent predictors of injury were identified: increased hip internal rotation and reduced ankle dorsiflexion. This program of research has provided information that is essential for the development of evidence-based injury prevention guidelines for adolescent and adult fast bowlers. The next stage in the injury prevention process is to implement measures that control the exposure to the injury risk factors identified in this thesis.

Abstract:
The thesis focuses on the significance of the cinematic medium for Elizabeth Bowen's novels, from the level of prose and formal representations to broader aspects of narrative and character. The chapters on To the North (1932) and The House in Paris (1935) examine complementary issues of motion and stillness and the consequent impact on subjective experiences of time, space, knowledge, and identity. The final chapter expands the issue of genre revision in The Heat of the Day (1949) to the greater problem of precedent and the reconstruction of identity through storytelling; the novel not only uses formal cinematic techniques by evoking the tone of film noir, but also reconfigures narrative and character tropes of the genre. Thus the advent of cinema not only opened up formal possibilities in the language of fiction but also expanded the types of worlds and effects an author could depict.
