Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to trace the evolution of paul bowles in his twinfold quest of facts and fiction. It shows how the imaginative element prevails over effective knowledge of the third world. Thus, it gives an example of a specific fiction which stands apart from north-american social and regional literary divisions. The first chapter retraces the highlights of his nomadic life. His novels and short stories are discussed in the three following chapters. They are divided according to the regions where the action takes place ; namely, latin america, algerian sahara, and morocco. The fifth chapter sorts out the determining factors in his whole work : his nihilistic exotism is a major contribution to overseas fiction. The sixth chapter deals with the author-work-reader relationships and discusses the use of arabic as part of the rhetoric. Because bowles's personality still remains nearly a complete riddle, it seemed tu us necessary to draw the line between the myth of "the drugs writer", on the one hand, and the real nature of the bonds that tied him to the beat generation, on the other. The interview we had with the author (cf. Appendice a) allowed us to improve our understanding of his present convictions

Abstract:
The American writer Paul Bowles lived in Morocco from 1947 until his death in 1999, apart from visits to North Africa, Europe, Ceylon, India and the United States during this period. Bowles’ expatriation and subsequent itineraries are quite well known, but this thesis explores his interest in – indeed, preoccupation with – mediations and a state of being ‘in-between’ in a selection of his texts: the translations, his autobiography and his fiction. Only a few commentators on Bowles’ work have noted a meta-fictional dimension in his texts, possibly because the facts of his life are so intriguing and even startling. Though not explicitly meta-fictional, in the manner of somewhat later writers, Bowles does not tell us directly how he understands the various in-betweens that may be identified in his work, and their relationship to the individual and social crises about which he writes. His work unravels the effects of crises as not directly redeemable but as mediated and over-determined in complex and subtle forms. There are no explicit postmodern textual strategies; rather, Bowles draws on the basic resources of fiction to locate, temporally and spatially, the in-between: plot, character, description and background are intertwined in order, at once, to give a work its unity and to reveal, sometimes quite incidentally, a supplementary quality that threatens to undermine that unity. Bowles’ experimentation with different genres and forms may be understood as part of this problematic, even as a form of textual travelling that leaves no single genre or form as a summation of his achievement. Using close, even – at times – deconstructive readings of a selection of texts across different genres, the thesis supplements the dominant approach to Paul Bowles’ relationship with Morocco, namely a life-and-work approach. It develops what might be called a postcolonial approach to Bowles, but, again, through close reading and an in situ use of theory that is appropriate to the texts in question, rather than through a heavy-handed theoretical approach. For instance, liminality as an encounter with the ambivalent process of hybridity is useful across Bowles’ work. Further, narrative ambivalence is helpful in the chapter on the translations, while Derrida’s exploration of a general versus a restricted economy informs my discussion of Let it Come Down. Bowles is, of course, vulnerable to a postcolonial critique that focuses on the exotic, and I share some of these concerns, as will be apparent in the following chapters. Chapter 2, for instance, deals with translation and argues that Bowles’ role moves between simple translator and facilitator to initiator and creator of the text in complex and often creative ways, especially in relation to Larbi Layachi and Mohamed Mrabet’s stories. In Chapter 3, the fictional treatment of the transitional stages in Bowles’ journey are analysed to show how Bowles enacts liminality as a non-unitary mode of understanding. The thesis concludes by arguing that there is always a pattern in Morocco. It suggests that Bowles is more subtle and more ambivalent than some of the simple oppositions might suggest. This subtlety is conveyed in the first part of my title, ‘Inhabiting the exotic’.

The expatriate american writer, paul bowles, has written four novels and around sixty short stories, many of which depict hapless american tourists wandering through a "less civilized" country in search of excitement, pleasure, or enlightenment. They invariably meet their doom, generally in a very horrible manner. Although we were extremely impressed by the chrystalline clarity of mr. Bowles' prose, we were perplexed as to the meaning of the pessimistic outlook pervading all of his works. Because of the dreamlike quality of much of his writing, we chose to investigate the author's use of dreams in order to elucidate the significance of the considerable violence encountered throughout his works. Using freud's method of dream interpretation as well as a general psychoanalytical approach, we found that much of the anxiety and hatred underlying bowles' fiction can be traced to the simultaneous desire for and fear of the mother figure

Abstract:
This thesis aims to reposition the critical understanding of Paul Bowles, away from the traditional North African focus that has guided interpretations of his work, and place him instead within an interdisciplinary framework that is particularly attentive to his mid-century American context. Focussing on Bowles’ initial collection of short stories, The Delicate Prey, it investigates its reception by contemporary critics, and its place within the wider cultural and political climate of postwar America, with specific attention to ideas of freedom and containment. Turning to his involvement in the surrealist movement during the 1930s in Europe, it then suggests ways in which Bowles’ fiction reworked aspects of surrealism within a new aesthetic framework. This framework was also indebted to Bowles’ earlier career as a classical composer, and the third chapter of this thesis focuses on the influence of his musical career on the form and content of his short fiction. Finally, the thesis considers Bowles’ conceptualisation of the short story as a genre, and the ways in which his writing used form to disrupt his readers’ wider ideas about fiction and society. Throughout, this thesis positions Bowles within an alternative literary tradition, arguing that Bowles deliberately drew on practice from visual arts and music in order to develop a distinctive literary idiom. It considers why Bowles’ short fiction failed to find the same support from critics that it found with other writers, and offers a model for understanding this reaction and, ultimately, why the initial critical response has continued to guide the interpretation of his work.

Abstract:
The trumpet and electronics genre of music has been in existence since 1965. While various dissertations have discussed other composers and their works in this field, there is still a need for a treatise exploring appropriate performance practice for the electroacoustic trumpet music of Meg Bowles. There has been no study of the compositional process nor trumpet techniques required for performance of these works and other electronic compositions. This dissertation will study the compositions for trumpet and electronics by Bowles, develop strategies for performing these works, and explore compositional techniques used to create them. Interviews have been conducted between the author and composer (Meg Bowles), as well as the author and collaborating performer (David Bilger). In addition, existing interviews with the composer are included from journals and websites. This document is presented in two parts: Part I, “Introduction to Music for Trumpet and Electronics,” “Biography of Meg Bowles,” “Compositional Techniques,” “Night Sun Journey,” “Places Where Rivers Meet,” “Shapeshifter,” and “Twilight Embrace.” The second part of this dissertation contains materials which are pertinent to the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree and includes recital programs, program notes, and vita.

Abstract:
Paul bowles, the american novelist, has been living in tangier (morocco) for more than forty years. The sheltering sky is about the gradual descent into hell of an american couple in the north african desert. These travellers, in search of exoticism and without landmarks, discover a culture which seems hermetic to them. They cannot understand the mentality and the culture of this land. The arabic characters in this first major work - he had edited only poems before settling in tangier - are present but remind one of the status of indians in early american literature : they say little and are difficult to understand. Unlike the first novel, the two americans in the spider's house polly and stenham, who meet each other for the first time in fez (morocco), try to understand the arabo-islamic culture. They get to know the young amar, a typical representative of a disappearing traditional society. Through the discussions between these americans and amar, paul bowles expresses his concern about the future of this culture, threatened in his eyes, by modernity which destroys spiritual values. As is known, the arabic culture cannot be conceived of, at least in north africa, without referring to islam. Paul bowles explores through amar's mentality this duality between arabity and islamity but he goes further, trying to highlight the vestiges of a preislamic culture. Thus, to him arabity consists not only of the historic past, the arabic culture and islamic religion, but also of the animist and berber contribution. This bowlesian conception of arabity is one of the major themes of midnight mass, where the novelist depicts faithfully a traditional society exposed to changes which assail it on all hands. His outlook on the arabic society, precisely the moroccan one, is sometimes critical, sometimes nostalgic. He is concerned about the spiritual values which are abandoned in favour of materialist ones. Paul bowles has translated numerous moroccan oral stories in view of preserving popular culture and arabity thus, he translated under the title for bread alone, the famous autobiography, of mohammed choukri. He uses cultural references from the arabo- islamic culture to elaborate his fiction. The influence of this culture on the writer is great, but he keeps asserting his americanity

Abstract:
When we go to bowling alleys, more often than not, we are often mesmerized by the one person who seems to get astrike with every swing. Is it the way they swing the ball? Or is it due to their feet placement? However, the answeris more straightforward than one might think; the form we use to bowl can make a massive difference betweengetting a strike and getting a gutter ball. Having poor performance at this sport can make playing it frustrating andembarrassing due to the constant gutter balls and inconsistent swings. To increase the chance of getting a strike, proper form is needed to do so. In this paper, we propose an application, Bowler Correcter, that will correct the formof a bowler in real-time. To improve the form of a poor bowler, the Xbox Kinect sensor V2 was used to provide thenecessary adjustments to correct a bowler's form. To train the sensor with proper form, proficient bowlers providedtraining data to the sensor. When selecting bowlers with poor form, the following was observed in non-proficientbowlers during a screening: tensed shoulders, an improper swing of the ball, not crouching in the follow-throughstage, and skipping the stance stage. We capture the skeleton of the bowler instead of the movement, which allowsus to assess the form of the bowler more clearly and accurately. Since this is a complex gesture, it had to be split upinto three gestures that would be later stored in the bowling database - Follow Through, Stance, and Swing ArmBack; breaking this gesture into parts makes it easier for the sensor to detect and to provide better feedback. TheKinect SDK, along with the Kinect library, was used to provide the necessary drivers for the Kinect sensor andprovide the needed libraries for creating the application. When gathering training data for the sensor, the applicationKinect Studio was used; this application and the Visual Gesture Builder can be found in the Kinect SDK. To trainthe Kinect sensor, clips recorded in the Visual Gesture Builder are loaded into Kinect Studio, where each clip istagged where the stance is present. To test the effectiveness of the application, Sports Champion 2 for PlayStation 3using the PlayStation Eye and Move controller was used as the increase in popularity in AR and VR allowedparticipants to experience bowling without needing to travel to a bowling alley. Additionally, with Covid concerns, this provided a way of ensuring cleanliness, comfort, and the safety of our participants as they bowled. The bowlerswith poor form were asked to play two games of bowling, one game without the corrector and the other with thecorrector, with the difficulty level set to championship; this increased the sensitivity of the Move controller andremoved all aides that prevented the ball from going into the gutter. It was found that this application provided thenecessary feedback needed for poor bowlers to correct their form and improve their performance.

Abstract:
Abstract A comparison between a micro-mechanical finite element model (FEM) and the macro-mechanical laminated plate theory (LPT) has been undertaken to investigate the failure of an 8-ply [0/0/90/90]s P75 Graphite/934 Epoxy composite subjected to mechanical and thermal loads. This study deals with the initiation of failure, ultimate failure, and resulting stresses at each failure, as well as the effect of thermal residual stresses on the failure of the composite material. Thermal residual stresses develop as a result of the difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion of the fiber and the matrix, and the operating (75°F) and stress-free or cure temperature (350°F). Relationships between the boundary condition of the FEM and LPT are also explored. The ANSYS finite element program has been used in this research. The initiation of failure is based on the ultimate radial stress criterion developed by Bowles and Griffin. For LPT analysis, the first-ply failure and consequent failures are derived using the Tsai-Wu failure theory. The analyses indicate intermediate degradation of the laminate as the applied stress/strain is increased. This information is used to predict the loss in overall stiffness as a function of loading.

Abstract:
The use of micro-pin feeder-bowls has been established as a way to singulate and orient micro-scale metallic pins of varying lengths. Increasing the rate and reliability with which pins can feed through the bowl is important when considering the use of such a feeder-bowl in an industrial setting. Previous experimental work, which was limited to a single driving frequency and small range of driving amplitudes of the feeder-bowl, showed low feed rates and long capture times for pins whose aspect ratio exceeded five-to-one. New experimental work has shown that by altering the driving amplitude and frequency of the feeder-bowl, pins with aspect ratios exceeding seven-to-one could be fed. Because the frequency response of feeder-bowls may be limited, other techniques for improving the feed rate for long pins were also sought. One such technique was the magnetizing of the pins to increase their response to a magnetic field which surrounded the feeder-bowl. In some circumstances, more than a 70% reduction in average capture time was observed. The improved capture performance for long pins will permit more freedom in the design of devices that can be assembled with the aid of vibratory micro-pin feeder-bowls. The research results will also be used to improve the accuracy of feeder bowl simulations.

Abstract:
Platelet therapy remains one of the most effective treatments. The use of WBC-depleted platelet is now mandatory to prevent a variety of adverse effects caused by transfused WBC (white blood cell) contaminating platelet. One of the current centrifuge bowls, which has most advantage for donors, has to use a WBC-depletion filter to meet the standards of WBC contamination. Development of new centrifuge bowls is intended here with the aid of CFD to guide the design of better performances. The simulation is in two stages; the first is to elucidate the mechanism of WBC-contamination of the current bowl (trajectory of WBC, based on velocity field established), and the second is to simulate the performance of new bowls on reducing remaining WBC in platelet concentrate. Evaluation of new bowls with human blood is reported.

Abstract:
An attempt has been made to develop a method of introducing 1/f fluctuation characteristics into aesthetic objects. First, topographic features of various tea bowls are measured using laser metrology, and their wave patterns are analyzed by the FFT and characterized by using power spectrums. The quantification of an affective factor involved on the outer surface of the tea bowls shows that the handmade tea bowls have an inclination close to −1 on the spatial frequency-power spectrum diagram, which means that it has 1/f fluctuation characteristics. A mass-produced one, on the other hand, tends to have an inclination of near −2, which gives us a monotonous or dull impression. Next, the 1/f fluctuation property is applied to shape design, in which the surface of a tea bowl is created using the measured texture. Rapid prototyping technology is employed to substantiate the model, and it has been confirmed that the accuracy of duplicates is satisfactory. Finally, a mathematical model with 1/f fluctuation characteristics is illustrated to mimic a real handmade tea bowl by using the proposed method.

Abstract:
Egg adhesiveness is one of the major problems in carp artificial breeding. The appropriate elimination of egg adhesiveness impacts the effectiveness of the breeding. This article discusses two used methods of carp egg adhesiveness removal: tannic acid+water and milk+water+salt solutions. Milk, water and salt solution was based on the following proportions: 1 litre of milk + 7 litres of water +50g of NaCl. Adhesiveness is removed from fertilized eggs in bowls by mixing them with geese feathers for no shorter than 60 minutes. The tannic acid solution was prepared by mixing 7 grams of tannic acid powder with 5 litres of water. 1 litre of solution is immediately poured into a bowl with fertilized eggs. Adhesiveness is removed from fertilized eggs in bowls by intensively mixing them for 10 minutes. After fertilization and removal of adhesiveness, the eggs were transferred into Weiss jars. The results showed that during the process of incubation, 3.7 million eggs were fertilized; out of them 1.6 million were rid of adhesiveness by milk solution, 2.1 – by tannic solution. It is plausible that unfavourable environmental conditions influenced the low egg vitality. 750 000 (47%) carp larvae hatched from milk solution treated eggs, while 800 000 (38%) of larvae hatched from the eggs treated with tannic solution.

Abstract:
The use of bowling machines to train batsmen whether it be indoors or outdoors have increased significantly. In the absence of bowlers, batsmen can bat for hours without any bowlers getting tired. The designs of these machines are often a derivative of ball projection machines used for other sports such as tennis. Reviewed literature highlights the deficit in visual information in the form of an arm and hand when using these machines. Hence a cricket bowling machine was developed with an arm and hand. The usability, functionality, repeatability and accuracy of the cricket bowling machine with an arm and hand was tested which had been previously designed and built by Dr Kelvin Loutan Jr (2016) at The University of Trinidad and Tobago. A trajectory model was developed for an indoor environment and experimentally validated with data collected from extensive testing of the bowling machine using Pitch Vision hardware and software. A design procedure had to be formulated to determine what test had to be done and the method of collecting data. The testing, collecting data and validation of the model was done with the cricket bowling machine at its current state with minor changes to the hand. The release angle at which the ball leaves the hand was found to have a significant impact on the length of the delivery. Finally, the bowling machine was able to bowl various lengths and varying speeds consistently. The variation in speed placed the machine in the category of medium-fast, that is, speeds between 120 km/h (75 mph) and 130 km/h (81mph).

Abstract:
Abstract A design optimization campaign was conducted to search for improved combustion profiles that enhance gasoline compression ignition in a heavy-duty diesel engine with a geometric compression ratio of 17.3. Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics simulations were employed using the software package CONVERGE. A large-scale design of experiments (DoE) approach was used for the optimization. The main parameters explored include geometric features, injector specifications, and swirl motion. Both stepped-lip bowls and re-entrant bowls were included in the optimization effort in order to assess their respective performance implications. A total of 256 design candidates were prepared using the software package CAESES for automated and simultaneous geometry generation and combustion recipe perturbation. The design optimization was conducted for three engine load points representing light to medium load conditions. The design candidates were evaluated for fuel efficiency, emissions, fuel-air mixing characteristics, and global combustion behavior. Simulation results show that the optimum designs were all stepped-lip bowls, which exhibited better overall performance than re-entrant bowls due to improvements in fuel-air mixing, as well as reduced heat loss and emissions formation. Improvements in indicated specific fuel consumption of up to 3.2% were achieved while meeting engine-out NOx emission targets of 1–1.5 g/kW·hr. Re-entrant bowls performed worse compared to the baseline design, and significant performance variations occurred across the load points. Specifically, the re-entrant bowls were on par with the stepped-lip bowls under light load conditions, but significant deteriorations occurred under higher load conditions. As a final task, selected optimized designs were then evaluated under simulated full-load conditions.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The aim of this systematic review is to explore the magnitude of the placebo effect in randomized controlled trials for diarrhea-type irritable bowel syndrome and to understand possible relevant factors that affect the placebo effect. Condition being studied: Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain related to defecation and a change in frequency and form of stool. Epidemiological study indicates that the prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome in different countries is high. It is estimated conservatively that direct costs related to irritable bowel syndrome causes a huge economic burden in the United States. In the latest Rome IV criteria, irritable bowel syndrome is divided into 4 subtypes based on abnormal bowel habits: irritable bowel syndrome with predominant constipation, irritable bowel syndrome with predominant diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome with mixed bowel habits, and irritable bowel syndrome unclassified. Regarding treatment for irritable bowel syndrome, there is no cure or curative treatment. Any agent should be compared with placebo to identify its efficacy. In fact, the placebo response rate of irritable bowel syndrome is high. However, the placebo response rate of IBS-D and the moderators of the magnitude of the placebo response rate are not clear.

Abstract:
Climate and hydrology are major drivers of ecosystems. They dramatically shape ecosystem structure and function, particularly in arid and semi-arid ecosystems. Understanding changes in climate, groundwater, and water quality and quantity is central to assessing the condition of park biota and key cultural resources. The Sonoran Desert Network collects data on climate, groundwater, and surface water at 11 National Park Service units in southern Arizona and New Mexico. This report provides an integrated look at climate, groundwater, and springs conditions at Chiricahua National Monument (NM), Coronado National Memorial (NMem), and Fort Bowie National Historic Site (NHS) during water year (WY) 2019 (October 2018–September 2019). Overall annual precipitation at Chiricahua NM and Coronado NMem in WY2019 was approximately the same as the normals for 1981–2010. (The weather station at Fort Bowie NHS had missing values on 275 days, so data were not presented for that park.) Fall and winter rains were greater than normal. The monsoon season was generally weaker than normal, but storm events related to Hurricane Lorena led to increased late-season rain in September. Mean monthly maximum temperatures were generally cooler than normal at Chiricahua, whereas mean monthly minimum temperatures were warmer than normal. Temperatures at Coronado were more variable relative to normal. The reconnaissance drought index (RDI) indicated that Chiricahua NM was slightly wetter than normal. (The WY2019 RDI could not be calculated for Coronado NMem due to missing data.) The five-year moving mean of annual precipitation showed both park units were experiencing a minor multi-year precipitation deficit relative to the 39-year average. Mean groundwater levels in WY2019 increased at Fort Bowie NHS, and at two of three wells monitored at Chiricahua NM, compared to WY2018. Levels in the third well at Chiricahua slightly decreased. By contrast, water levels declined in five of six wells at Coronado NMem over the same period, with the sixth well showing a slight increase over WY2018. Over the monitoring record (2007–present), groundwater levels at Chiricahua have been fairly stable, with seasonal variability likely caused by transpiration losses and recharge from runoff events in Bonita Creek. At Fort Bowie’s WSW-2, mean groundwater level was also relatively stable from 2004 to 2019, excluding temporary drops due to routine pumping. At Coronado, four of the six wells demonstrated increases (+0.30 to 11.65 ft) in water level compared to the earliest available measurements. Only WSW-2 and Baumkirchner #3 have shown net declines (-17.31 and -3.80 feet, respectively) at that park. Springs were monitored at nine sites in WY2019 (four sites at Chiricahua NM; three at Coronado NMem, and two at Fort Bowie NHS). Most springs had relatively few indications of anthropogenic or natural disturbance. Anthropogenic disturbance included modifications to flow, such as dams, berms, or spring boxes. Examples of natural disturbance included game trails, scat, or evidence of flooding. Crews observed 0–6 facultative/obligate wetland plant taxa and 0–3 invasive non-native species at each spring. Across the springs, crews observed six non-native plant species: common mullein (Verbascum thapsus), spiny sowthistle (Sonchus asper), common sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus), Lehmann lovegrass (Eragrostis lehmanniana), rabbitsfoot grass (Polypogon monspeliensis), and red brome (Bromus rubens). Baseline data on water quality and water chemistry were collected at all nine sites. It is likely that that all nine springs had surface water for at least some part of WY2019, though temperature sensors failed at two sites. The seven sites with continuous sensor data had water present for most of the year. Discharge was measured at eight sites and ranged from < 1 L/minute to 16.5 L/minute.
