Abstract:
The Bowen and Sydney Basins in eastern Australia contain vast coal resources which provide a source for coalbed methane. Through studies of the spatial and temporal distribution of the sedimentary packages, the structural geometry and tectonic setting of the sedimentary packages, and the maturation and burial history, the Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO) is mapping the distribution and structural styles of the sources of methane, in particular, the Late Permian coal measures. AGSO's results from the Bowen Basin show at least two distinctly different structural styles of potential targets for coalbed methane drainage: on the Comet Ridge, the Permian coal measures are essentially subhorizontal and tectonically undisturbed, whereas in the western Taroom Trough, the coal measures are folded into a series of anticlines, each of which occurs above a thrust fault which in turn forms part of an imbricate thrust fan. Both of these styles occur at depths of less than 1000 m.Calculations by the Bureau of Resource Sciences (BRS) indicate that the inferred coalbed methane resources-in-place are 62 trillion cubic feet (1760 billion m3) for Australia, in which the Bowen and Sydney Basins are currently the only potential provinces of coalbed methane. The low permeability of the coal seams hinders attempts to utilise this vast amount of energy resources.Further exploration is necessary to delineate commercially feasible areas. This delineation is the only process that will be able to determine demonstrated coalbed methane resources.

Abstract:
AbstractThis study investigates the microclimate and hydrology of debris-laden ice surfaces in the Taylor Valley, Antarctica, in early summer, focusing on the onset of melt. Measurements of energy and mass fluxes were made on an outwash fan and in moraines near the terminus of Taylor Glacier. The surface microclimate was strongly controlled by absorbed solar radiation, with a low albedo of 0.17. Seasonal warming of the substrate led to an abrupt shift in thermal and hydrological patterns as temperatures exceeded freezing point. Within a week the Bowen ratio switched from 2.05 to 0.48 and mass losses to the atmosphere increased four-fold from 0.39 to 1.6 mm d-1. Melt onset also produced complex ground temperature patterns with strong diurnal damping below the freezing front. These patterns were caused by phase changes in the freezing front, coupled with an abundant water supply from local runoff. Of secondary importance to the surface energy balance and mass fluxes was the effect of local winds on boundary layer characteristics. This resulted in larger mass losses during the more turbulent, warmer and drier down-valley flows.

Abstract:
Inflammatory processes that recruit leukocytes to injured or infected tissues are crucial for tissue repair and the elimination of pathogens. However, excessive or chronic inflammation promotes tissue damage and disease, as in arthritis, atherosclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and COVID-19. Intracellular constituents released from dying cells are among the stimuli that trigger proinflammatory gene expression programs in innate immune cells. We explore how programmed cell death mechanisms—apoptosis, necroptosis, and pyroptosis—may contribute to inflammatory disease. We discuss inhibition of cell death as a potential therapeutic strategy, focusing on the targets RIPK1 (receptor interacting serine/threonine kinase 1), NLRP3 (NLR family pyrin domain containing 3), and GSDMD (gasdermin D) as important mediators of lytic cell death. We also consider the potential benefits of limiting membrane rupture rather than cell death by targeting NINJ1.

Abstract:
Abstract B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) is the most common pediatric malignancy. Although overall cure rate has exceeded 90%, the prognosis of high-risk B-ALL remains poor. Genome sequencing studies have revealed key genetic aberrations in B-ALL. But driver remains unclear in 8% of B-ALL for leukemogenesis, and 40% of high-risk B-ALL for drug resistance. Epigenetic mechanisms contributing to leukemia have recently been recognized, including histone modification and methylation. To date, a comprehensive landscape of chromatin accessibility in B-ALL is still lacking. Here, we performed Assays for Transposase Accessible Chromatin using sequencing (ATAC-seq) on a total of 61 high-risk B-ALLs treated at Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, including major B-ALL subtypes. We generated 144 high quality chromatin accessibility profiles from 79 tumors, including 18 diagnosis-relapse paired tumors as well as 11 diagnosis and 32 relapsed tumors. We observed significantly higher chromatin accessibility in B-ALL as compared to normal B-cells. Functional chromatin state annotation showed a median of 27.1% open chromatin regions (OCRs) in B-ALL were constituted from quiescent regions that were absent for known histone modifications, indicating unveiled role of quiescent regions in B-ALL. We further investigated the allelic imbalanced chromatin accessibility in 32 B-ALL with matched ATAC-seq and whole genome sequencing data. Unexpectedly, we found a median of 10.8% of OCRs showed imbalanced accessibility between two heterozygous alleles. Moreover, the adjacent imbalanced OCRs tend to be in the same topologically associating domain, suggesting the transcription regulation from chromatin accessibility was constrained within 3-D genome architecture. We next looked into the OCRs among B-ALL subtypes. Consistent with the regulatory role of chromatin accessibility on gene transcription, we found subtype specific pattern of OCRs in B-ALL, with open regions from enhancer and bivalent chromatin states showed more power in subtype discrimination. A total of 15516 out of 765788 (2.03%) peaks were identified as subtype specific OCRs. Motif analysis associated these regions to 212 transcription factors (TFs). Consistently, genes regulated by these TFs also exhibited subtype specific expression. Finally, we analyzed differences in OCRs between diagnosis (D) and relapse (R) in each B-ALL subtype. Only 2.44% D-R differential peaks were shared between any two subtypes, suggesting subtype specific role of chromatin accessibility in relapse. Potential target genes were further identified with quantitative trait loci analysis. With data from DepMap project, we verified that the expression of the target genes identified was associated with drug response. These data unveiled potential role of chromatin accessibility in high-risk B-ALL and the treatment response of this malignancy. Abstract:
Summary Aim: Since the Tc-99m labelled monoclonal anti-NCA 90 granulocyte antibody Fab’ fragment MN3 (MN3 Fab’) might be of interest for imaging abdominal inflammation which could be hampered by nonspecific bowel activity, we prospectively investigated the appearance of bowel activity in MN3 Fab’ imaging. Methods: Eighty consecutive patients (age range 12-85 years) referred for suspected nonabdominal, mostly musculoskeletal infection, were included. Abdominal inflammation was excluded clinically and there were no signs of inflammatory bowel disease in the patients’ histories. One, 5, and 24 hours after intravenous injection of up to 1.1 GBq of MN3 Fab’ planar images of the abdomen were performed. Bowel activity was graded visually using a 5-point scale. Results: The one (N = 80), 5 (N = 79), and 24 (N = 52) hour images revealed 46 (10%), 162 (34%), and 173 (55%) accumulating bowel segments, respectively, in 37 (46%), 69 (87%), and 52 (100%) patients. The mean intensity score per accumulating segment was 1.1,1.8 and 2.7 (p = 0), respectively. Relative frequencies of appearance of the small intestine were 38%, 57%, and 21%, ileocaecal region 6%, 53%, and 48%, ascending colon 5%, 67%, and 89%, transverse colon 1%, 9%, and 69%, descending colon 8%,15 %, and 67%, and rectosigmoid 0%, 4%, and 38%, respectively. Follow-up investigations in 13 patients revealed diverging uptake patterns. Conclusion: Nonspecific bowel activity is often present in the early and almost always and more intense, in the delayed images. Early imaging at one hour after administration seems feasible, but a loss in sensitivity has to be considered. Thus, nonspecific bowel activity can be anticipated to be a pitfall in imaging abdominal inflammation with MN3 Fab’.

Abstract:
Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a complex disease that occurs after extensive resection of the small intestine leading to malabsorption of nutrients and fluids, a condition that can cause severe watery diarrhea, dehydration and acute weight loss, developing high risk for the appearance of osteometabolic disease. Studies have shown the progress on the physiological interaction of the skeleton with the various systems, including energetic metabolism and the gastrointestinal tract. Peptides originated not only in adipose tissue but also in the intestine such as incretin [GIP (Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP1 (glucagonlike peptide 1) modulate bone remodeling activity. The main objective of the current study was to evaluate the influence of subcutaneous (SAT), visceral (VAT) adipose tissue, intrahepatic lipids (IHL), bone marrow fat adipose tissue (MAT), as well as the influence of GIP, GLP1, and ghrelin on the bone mineral density (BMD) of SBS patients. It is a prospective observational study composed by two experimental groups matched by height, age and sex: a) the control group (CG) (n = 18; 9M,9F) and b) the SBS group which were evaluated in two occasions with a period between analyzes of one year: named SBS0 (n = 14; 7M,7F) and SBS1 (n = 11; 6M,5F). Compared to CG, SBS patients throughout the study had significantly lower BMD and elevated IHL and GIP (p< 0.05). Values of MAT, GLP1 and ghrelin were similar between groups. MAT was negatively and significantly correlated with L3 BMD in the CG (r = -0.6; p< 0.05) and positively correlated, but not significant with L3 BMD in the SBS group throughout the study: SBS0 (r= 0.45; p= 0.13) and SBS1 (r= 0.45; p= 0.17). IHL was negatively and significantly associated with femoral neck BMD (R²= 0.16; p< 0.05) and total hip BMD (R²= 0.27; p< 0.05). The occurrence of osteoporosis is frequent in SBS patients, but MAT is not increased in these patients and had positive correlation with BMD, although not significant. Access to calories seems to positively affect the relationship between MAT and bone mass. IHL appear to negatively affect bone mass in SBS patients.

The knowledge on growth of cultivated species allows to planning and to manage, in a rational way, the cultivations, contributing so that the species get to express ali its potential, besides supplying data for construction of mathematical models capable to describe the need of water by crops, through the knowledge of evapotranspiration. The main objective of this work was the energy and hydric characterization in the development of tomato kaki in greenhouse, seeking determination of the need of water. The following determinations were performed: sensitive and latent heat flows by the methods of energy balance of Bowen and by the method of Penman-Monteith; crop coefficient through the methods of Linacre, Penman-Monteith and radiation; and evapotranspiration by the methods of water balance and Penman-Monteith. During the experimental period, weekly measures of plants height and length and width of leaves were taken. Models were adjusted for determination of the foliar area index, in function of the width and length of the leaves. Compared to the model of Penman-Monteith, the model of Linacre underestimated the values of ETo, when the radiation balance (Rn) was superior to 7.0 MJ m" ; on the other hand, when Rn happened in the strip of 4 MJ m"2 the method of Linacre overestimated ETo. The radiation balance was consumed in 71% by the latent heat flow inside of the greenhouse, and in 15% by the sensitive heat flow. In spite of the behavior of the two methods be the same, the values found by the water balance method were larger than the ones found by the method of Penman- Monteith. The relationship Rgi and Rge stayed constant during the cycle with transmissivity of 89%, showing, therefore, reduction of 18%, provoked by the covering of polyethylene. The Rg, in spite of showing a high agreement, presented a larger error when compared to the other elements, showing that significant differences exist among the measures obtained inside of the greenhouse and the ones estimated by the externai data. The mean value of fruits per plant was of 21.5, with a production of 3.04 kg plant"1 and a productivity of 7.6 kg m"2, totaling a productivity of 76 t ha"1, which is a value larger than the National mean. It was verified that the largest water consumption happened in the reproductive phase.

Abstract:
Alpha1-proteinase inhibitor (alpha1-PI) has been shown to be a useful marker of gastrointestinal protein loss in some species. The objectives of this study were, first, to develop and analytically validate an ELISA for the measurement of alpha1-PI in feces and serum from cats, and, second, to evaluate fecal alpha1-PI concentrations in healthy cats and cats with chronic gastrointestinal disease. The lower detection limits of the ELISA were 0.02 g/L for serum and 0.04 microgram/gram for feces. The observed-to-expected (O/E) ratios for serial dilutions of serum and fecal samples ranged from 100.0 to 129.7% (mean +/- SD: 112.2 +/- 9.9%) and 103.5 to 141.6% (115.6 +/- 12.8%), respectively. The O/E ratios for samples spiked with seven known concentrations of alpha1-PI ranged from 82.3 to 107.8% (94.7 +/- 7.6%) for serum and 78.5 to 148.7% (96.8 +/- 18.2%) for feces. The coefficients of variation for intra-assay and inter-assay variability were <7.9% and <12.1% for serum, and 5.3%, 11.8%, and 14.2% and 7.7%, 10.2%, and 20.4% for feces, respectively. Reference intervals were 0.6 to 1.4 g/L for serum and up to 1.6 microgram/g for feces. We conclude that this ELISA is sufficiently linear, accurate, precise, and reproducible. For the clinical evaluation, twenty cats with clinical signs of chronic gastrointestinal disease and 20 healthy control cats were enrolled. The diseased cats were grouped into two groups: mild to moderate idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) (Group A; n=8) and severe IBD or neoplastic disease (Group B; n=12), based on histopathology results of endoscopic biopsies. Fecal alpha1-PI concentrations and serum concentrations of total protein, albumin, globulin, cobalamin, folate, pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity, and trypsin-like immunoreactivity were determined. Nineteen of the 20 diseased cats had increased fecal alpha1-PI concentrations, ranging from 1.9 to 233.6 microgram/g (normal range: <= 1.6 microgram/g). Fecal alpha1-PI concentrations were statistically significantly different between healthy cats and cats of Group A (median: 3.9 microgram/g, range: 1.3 to 9.2 microgram/g, P<0.001) or cats of Group B (median: 20.6 microgram/g, 4.3 to 233.6 microgram/g; P<0.001), and also between cats of Groups A and B (P<0.01). Hypoalbuminemia, hypoproteinemia, and hypocobalaminemia were detected in 88%, 83%, and 56% of the diseased cats, respectively. Our study suggests that increased fecal alpha1-PI concentrations in association with hypoalbuminemia may be a common finding in cats with IBD or GI neoplasia. Furthermore, alpha1-PI concentrations appear to be higher in cats with severe IBD or confirmed GI neoplasia when compared to cats with mild to moderate IBD.

Abstract:
This chapter shows that Elizabeth Bowen’s most cosmopolitan novel, To the North (1932), strategically uses references to clothes and other sartorial items in the construction of literary character. Far from being simply the markers of characters’ socio-economic constellations, clothes, it argues, function as agents of intersubjectivity in the text. Because they are associated with the velocity and the verve of modern capitalism, clothes in To the North connect people and are responsible for the development of interpersonal energies. Although she acknowledges fashion’s tendency to promote standardized images of modern femininity, Bowen’s assessment of fashion and commodity culture therefore moves beyond outright rejection and criticism. By the same token, she developed idiosyncratic literary aesthetics that, paradoxically, represent the materiality of the world without returning to the use of realist literary conventions criticized by Woolf and other modernist writers.

Abstract:
This chapter details how, at MCA (Music Corporation of America), Jimmy Bowen signed artists whom he might have met backstage at an Emmylou Harris show, including a trio of singer-songwriters from Texas: Nanci Griffith, Lyle Lovett, and the wild card of the bunch, Steve Earle. Earle had bounced in and out of Nashville for a decade. A singer-songwriter who grew up on rock, he cut a rockabilly record for Epic that went unreleased until his MCA debut became a hit. Since he had grown up as a fan of rock and roll, Earle made a country record that could also appeal to rockers. However, Steve Earle's drug use was flagrant by the time he was recording Copperhead Road. He wrote two songs while behind bars for drugs, the rocking “Hard-Core Troubadour” and a poignant ballad, “Goodbye.”

Abstract:
Major vascular events involving the superior mesenteric artery and small-bowel volvulus are the commonest reasons for adults to require massive intestinal resection. The ability of the residual bowel to adapt after resection varies greatly between patients, but common postoperative problems include sepsis, diarrhoea (or high-output stoma losses), fluid and electrolyte imbalance, malnourishment (protein–energy malnutrition, mineral and vitamin deficiencies), gallstones, renal stones, and psychological illness. Where appropriate, oral nutrition, initially consisting of low-volume polymeric feeds administered by nasogastric or enteral tube, should be started within the first few days of surgery. Small-volume, frequent, solid or semisolid meals with low long-chain triglycerides and (when colon is in continuity) oxalate content should be introduced subsequently, and isotonic electrolyte solutions given as required. Oral multivitamin and mineral supplements are usually needed, and vitamin B12 injections may be required. There should be regular long-term monitoring of fat-soluble vitamins (A and D), vitamin B12, folate, magnesium, zinc, and bone status. Long-term intravenous nutrition is sometimes needed. Growth factor administration, especially glucagon-like peptide-2 analogues, may stimulate bowel adaptation. Small-bowel lengthening may be considered for patients with dilated bowel close to the length required. Those who are dependent on peripheral nutrition and develop complications such as loss of venous access or liver disease should be considered for intestinal transplantation.

Abstract:
Abstract The small intestine consists of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. The combined length of the jejunum and ileum measured from the duodenojejunal flexure to the ileocaecal junction in vivo varies considerably but is approximately 5 m in adults. The duodenum extends from the stomach to the duodenojejunal flexure; the proximal two-fifths of the remaining small intestine is the jejunum and the distal three-fifths is the ileum. The duodenum is mostly retroperitoneal while the jejunum and ileum are intraperitoneal and suspended by a fat-laden mesentery containing blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerves. There is no clear anatomical transition between the jejunum and the ileum but the morphology and histology of the proximal and distal regions of the small bowel differ significantly. The wall of the small intestine consists of a mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, and serosa. The mucosal surface is characterized by numerous intestinal villi, which are covered on their luminal surface by enterocytes bearing luminal microvilli. The small intestine is adapted for fluid, electrolyte, and nutrient absorption. Intestinal stem cells located in the intestinal crypts are the source of most cell types of the intestinal epithelium. The functions of the small intestine are regulated by the enteric nervous system, which is modulated by extrinsic autonomic nerves. The development of the human small intestine is largely complete by the end of the 12th week after fertilization.

Abstract:
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects 1 in 200 people in Western countries with the two main forms being Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Clinically, IBD is characterized by chronic diarrhoea, bloody bowel movements, abdominal pain, weight loss, fatigue, fever, and extraintestinal manifestations such as arthralgia or skin affections. In rare cases, pericarditis or myocardial involvement is found. Genome-wide association studies have identified more than 250 genetic susceptibility factors. Additionally, so-far unidentified environmental factors play an important role in IBD pathophysiology. They may directly act on the intestinal mucosa or mediate their effects via the intestinal microbiota which is altered in its diversity. In patients with IBD, a ‘leaky’ intestinal barrier and impaired intestinal defence leads to increased bacterial invasion into the epithelial mucus layer and to bacterial translocation into the bloodstream. Bacterial wall products such as lipopolysaccharides are found in higher concentrations in IBD patients.

Abstract:
The adverse impacts of inlet distortion on fan/compressor have been recognized as an important problem for several decades, and it is still a topic of considerable interest. Many research works indicate that it is possible to improve the performance and stability of a fan in clean and distorted inlet flow by using bowed stator blades. But, how bowed stator influences the flow field and what kind of bow patterns and angles can improve fan performance better are still not clearly studied. Therefore, a 3D analysis in fan flow field with different bowed stator blades is required. In this paper, a time-dependent three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equation composed in “Fluent Software Pack” is carried out in a parallel supercomputer. The fan with straight/different bowed stators is simulated with a clean/distorted inlet boundary condition to obtain a better understanding of bowed stators effects in distorted flow field. The analysis of results consists of three aspects. The first is about the effects of straight/bowed stators on the fan characteristics with clean and distorted inlet. Bowed stators can improve the fan performance significantly when inlet is distorted, especially at design point. But, when inlet is clean bowed stators even worsen the fan performance at design point. The effects of bowed stators on the fan performance at design point are analyzed secondly. It is found that different bow angles have different influence on rotor or stator flow field. Small bow angle stator reduces the flow loss in rotor but have no effect on stator flow field. Large bow angle stator can reduce the flow loss in stator markedly, but increases the rotor loss. Finally the patterns of flow loss caused by total pressure distortion with straight and different bowed stators are compared and analyzed in detail. The scale of vortex in stator is weakened by large bow angle blades significantly, which decreased the stator loss.

The adverse impacts of inlet distortion on fan/compressor have been recognized as an important problem for several decades. But it is still a topic of considerable interest. Prior work has proved, in distorted flow field, bowed stators can constrain separation and reduce flow loss. Different bow patterns and angles influence the fan/compressor in different way. But the above work was carried out only at the design point. How bowed stators influence the fan/compressor performance and stability at other operating conditions is still not clearly studied. Therefore, a deeper research work is required. In this paper, a time-dependent three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equation composed in “Fluent Software Pack” is carried out in a parallel supercomputer. A fan with straight/30° bowed stators is simulated with a clean/distorted inlet boundary condition at different operating conditions to obtain the fan characteristic. Two main aspects are contained in this paper. The first is about the effects of straight/bowed stators on the fan characteristics with clean and distorted inlet at different operating point. It is found that 30° bowed stator will worsen the fan performance at most operating conditions with clean inlet. But, when inlet is distorted, it can improve the fan performance and increase the stall margin obviously. The effects of bowed stators on the fan performance and flow field at near stall and design point are analyzed secondly. The fan stability and the anti-distortion capability can be improved by using bowed stator when the inlet total pressure is non-uniform.

Abstract:
This paper presents the design of a highly loaded transonic two-stage fan using several advanced three-dimensional blading techniques including forward sweep and “hub bending” in rotors and several bowed configurations in stators. The effects of these blading techniques on the performance of the highly loaded transonic two-stage fan were investigated on the basis of three-dimensional Navier-Stokes predictions. The results indicate that forward sweep has insignificant impact on the total pressure ratio and adiabatic efficiency of the fan. The throttling range of the fan is found to be improved by forward sweep because the shock in the forward swept rotor is expelled later upstream to the leading edge than that in the unswept one. Hub bending design technique increases the efficiency in the hub region of R1 due to the reduction of the low momentum zone in the hub region near the trailing edge. The stator vane design has a pronounced impact on the performance of the fan. The total pressure ratio, adiabatic efficiency, and stall margin of the schemes with the bowed vanes are increased significantly compared to the scheme with the straight vanes. The large corner stall in the straight S1 vane is reduced effectively by the bowed S1 vanes. Moreover, the strong corner stall in the straight S2 vane is fully eliminated by the bowed S2 vanes. Among the bowed vane schemes, the scheme with positive bowed (P. B.) hub and negative bowed (N. B.) tip vanes has the best efficiency and stall margin performances thanks to the superiority of the performance over the midspan regions of the bowed vanes.

Abstract:
The performance and stability of a fan in clean and distorted inlet flow can be improved through the use of bowed stator blades. Measurements between the blade rows in transonic and supersonic flow are too complex to provide any useful insights, so 3D flow simulations are required. In this paper, a time-accurate three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver of the unsteady flow field in a transonic fan is carried out using “Fluent-parallel” in a parallel supercomputer. Two sets of simulations are performed. The first simulation focuses on a better understanding of inlet total pressure distortion effects on a transonic fan. The second set of numerical simulation aims at studying the improvements of fan performance made by bowed stator blades. Three aspects are contained in this paper. The first is about the distortion effects on characteristics of the fan stage with straight stator. The effects of bowed stator on fan performance with inlet distortion are demonstrated secondly. One hand bowed stator increases the loss in rotor. On the other hand, it reduces the flow loss in stator. Finally, the patterns of flow loss caused by total pressure distortion with straight/bowed stator are compared. The scale of vortex in stator induced by inlet total pressure distortion is weakened by bowed blades, which decreases the stator loss.

Abstract:
Apart from its traditional role in disease control, recent body of evidence has implicated a role of the immune system in regulating metabolic homeostasis. Owing to the importance of this “immune-metabolic alignment” in dictating a state of health or disease, a proper mechanistic understanding of this alignment is crucial in opening up for promising therapeutic approaches against a broad range of chronic, metabolic, and inflammatory disorders like obesity, diabetes, and inflammatory bowel syndrome. In this project, we addressed the role of the Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) innate immune pathway in regulating different metabolic parameters using the Drosophila melanogaster (DM) fruit fly model organism. Mutant JAK/STAT pathway flies with a systemic knockdown of either Domeless (Dome) [domeG0282], the receptor that activates JAK/STAT signaling, or the signal-transducer and activator of transcription protein at 92E (Stat92E) [stat92EEY10528], were used. The results of the study revealed that blocking JAK/STAT signaling alters the metabolic profile of mutant flies. Both domeG0282 and stat92EEY10528 mutants had an increase in body weight, lipid deprivation from their fat body (lipid storage organ in flies), irregular accumulation of lipid droplets in the gut, systemic elevation of glucose and triglyceride levels, and differential down-regulation in the relative gene expression of different peptide hormones (Tachykinin, Allatostatin C, and Diuretic hormone 31) known to regulate metabolic homeostasis in flies. Because the JAK/STAT pathway is evolutionary conserved between invertebrates and vertebrates, our potential findings in the fruit fly serves as a platform for further immune-metabolic translational studies in more complex mammalian systems including humans.

Abstract:
OR microbiota] AND [irritable bowel syndrome AND IBS AND gut].

Abstract:
Predictive computations of the nonlinear dynamical responses of gap-supported tubes subjected to flow excitation have been the subject of active research. Nevertheless, experimental results are still necessary, for validation of the theoretical predictions as well as for asserting the integrity of field components. Because carefully instrumented test tubes and tube-supports are seldom possible, due to space limitations and to the severe environment conditions, there is a need for robust techniques capable of extracting relevant information from the actual vibratory response data. Although at the present time such analysis is over-ambitious, as far as the multi-supported tube bundles of real-life components are concerned, the same instrumentation difficulties frequently apply in the case of laboratory test rigs. Therefore, the subject of this paper is of practical significance even in the more modest realm of laboratory experiments. The knowledge of the dynamical contact/impact (vibro-impact) forces is of paramount significance, as also the tube/support gaps. Following our previous studies in this area using wave-propagation techniques [1–3], we recently applied modal methods for extracting such information. Based on numerically simulated time-domain vibro-impact responses, the dynamical support forces, as well as the vibratory responses at the support locations, were identified from one or several vibratory responses at remote locations, from which the support gaps could also be inferred [4]. Also recently, for the related problem of friction force identification on bowed strings, preliminary experiments have shown the feasibility of these identification techniques [5]. In the present paper, the modal identification techniques developed in [4,5] are tested using an experimental rig built at CEA/Saclay, consisting on a randomly excited clamped-free beam which impacts on an intermediate gap-support. Identification of the impact force, as well as of the beam motion at the gap-support, are achieved based on remote measurements of the beam response provided by two accelerometers. A significant feature of the experimental identifications presented in this paper is that, beyond the results obtained under a point-force shaker excitation, we test here an original technique to identify the gap-supported reactions in flow-excited systems, which was recently introduced in [4]. As for most inverse problems, the identification results may prove sensitive to both noise and modeling errors. Therefore, regularization techniques discussed in [4] are used to mitigate the effects of unmeasured noise perturbations. Overall, the experimentally identified results compare reasonably well with the measured contact forces and motions at the gap-supports. Actually, even if our identifications are not immaculate at the present time, they remain nevertheless quite usable.

Full text
Abstract:
The objectives of this project were to predict the performance of naturally and fan-ventilated greenhouses as a function of climate, type of crop, evaporative cooling and greenhouse size, and to estimate the effects of the two cooling systems on yield, quality and disease development in the different crops under study. Background In the competitive field of greenhouse cultivation, growers and designers in both the US and Israel are repeatedly forced to choose between naturally ventilated (NV) and fan ventilated (FV) cooling systems as they expand their ranges in an effort to remain profitable. The known advantages and disadvantages of each system do not presently allow a clear decision. Whether essentially zero operating costs can offset the less dependable cooling of natural ventilation systems is question this report hopes to answer. Major Conclusions US It was concluded very early on that FV greenhouses without evaporative pad cooling are not competitive with NV greenhouses during hot weather. During the first year, the US team found that average air temperatures were always higher in the FV houses, compared to the NV houses, when evaporative pad cooling was not used, regardless of ventilation rate in the FV houses or the vent configuration in the NV houses. Canopy temperatures were also higher in the FV ventilated houses when three vents were used in the NV houses. A second major conclusion was that the US team found that low pressure fogging (4 atm) in NV houses does not completely offset the advantage of evaporative pad cooling in FV houses. High pressure fog (65 atm) is more effective, but considerably more expensive. Israel Experiments were done with roses in the years 2003-2005 and with tomatoes in 2005. Three modes of natural ventilation (roof, side and side + roof openings) were compared with a fan-ventilated (with evaporative cooling) house. It was shown that under common practice of fan ventilation, during summer, the ventilation rate is usually lower with NV than with FV. The microclimate under both NV and FV was not homogeneous. In both treatments there were strong gradients in temperature and humidity in the vertical direction. In addition, there were gradients that developed in horizontal planes in a direction parallel to the direction of the prevailing air velocity within the greenhouse. The gradients in the horizontal direction appear to be larger with FV than with NV. The ratio between sensible and latent heat fluxes (Bowen ratio) was found to be dependent considerably on whether NV or FV is applied. This ratio was generally negative in the naturally ventilated house (about -0.14) and positive in the fan ventilated one (about 0.19). Theoretical models based on Penman-Monteith equation were used to predict the interior air and crop temperatures and the transpiration rate with NV. Good agreement between the model and experimental results was obtained with regard to the air temperature and transpiration with side and side + roof ventilation. However, the agreement was poor with only roof ventilation. The yield (number of rose stems longer than 40 cm) was higher with FV

Abstract:
Vineyards are found on six of seven continents, producing a crop of high economic value with much historic and cultural significance. Because of the wide range of conditions under which grapes are grown, management approaches are highly varied and must be adapted to local climatic constraints. Research has been conducted in the traditionally prominent grape growing regions of Europe, Australia, and the western USA, but far less information is available to guide production under more extreme growing conditions. The overarching goal of this project was to improve understanding of vineyard water management related to the critical inter-row zone. Experiments were conducted in moist temperate (North Carolina, USA) and arid (Negev, Israel) regions in order to address inter-row water use under high and low water availability conditions. Specific objectives were to: i) calibrate and verify a modeling technique to identify components of evapotranspiration (ET) in temperate and semiarid vineyard systems, ii) evaluate and refine strategies for excess water removal in vineyards for moist temperate regions of the Southeastern USA, and iii) evaluate and refine strategies for water conservation in vineyards for semi-arid regions of Israel. Several new measurement and modeling techniques were adapted and assessed in order to partition ET between favorable transpiration by the grapes and potentially detrimental water use within the vineyard inter-row. A micro Bowen ratio measurement system was developed to quantify ET from inter-rows. The approach was successful at the NC site, providing strong correlation with standard measurement approaches and adding capability for continuous, non-destructive measurement within a relatively small footprint. The environmental conditions in the Negev site were found to limit the applicability of the technique. Technical issues are yet to be solved to make this technique sufficiently robust. The HYDRUS 2D/3D modeling package was also adapted using data obtained in a series of intense field campaigns at the Negev site. The adapted model was able to account for spatial variation in surface boundary conditions, created by diurnal canopy shading, in order to accurately calculate the contribution of interrow evaporation (E) as a component of system ET. Experiments evaluated common practices in the southeastern USA: inter-row cover crops purported to reduce water availability and thereby favorably reduce grapevine vegetative growth; and southern Israel: drip irrigation applied to produce a high value crop with maximum water use efficiency. Results from the NC site indicated that water use by the cover crop contributed a significant portion of vineyard ET (up to 93% in May), but that with ample rainfall typical to the region, cover crop water use did little to limit water availability for the grape vines. A potential consequence, however, was elevated below canopy humidity owing to the increased inter-row evapotranspiration associated with the cover crops. This creates increased potential for fungal disease occurrence, which is a common problem in the region. Analysis from the Negev site reveals that, on average, E accounts for about10% of the total vineyard ET in an isolated dripirrigated vineyard. The proportion of ET contributed by E increased from May until just before harvest in July, which could be explained primarily by changes in weather conditions. While non-productive water loss as E is relatively small, experiments indicate that further improvements in irrigation efficiency may be possible by considering diurnal shading effects on below canopy potential ET. Overall, research provided both scientific and practical outcomes including new measurement and modeling techniques, and new insights for humid and arid vineyard systems. Research techniques developed through the project will be useful for other agricultural systems, and the successful synergistic cooperation amongst the research team offers opportunity for future collaboration.
