Ouellet, François. "La création romanesque d'Emmanuel Bove." Paris 4, 1994. http://www.theses.fr/1994PA040220.

Abstract:
This thesis goes against the current of the traditional exegesis of Emmanuel Bove's novels. In fact, from the very first commentaries of the 1920s to those attached to the most recent edition,Bove's work has always been elucidated from a single point of view. .

Fox, Daniel Kenneth. "Identification of bovel mechanisms mediating skeletal muscle atrophy." Diss., University of Iowa, 2016. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/3086.

Full text
Abstract:
Skeletal muscle atrophy is a common, debilitating consequence of muscle disuse, malnutrition, critical illness, musculoskeletal conditions, neurological disease, cancer, and organ failure. Despite its prevalence, little is known about the molecular pathogenesis of this devastating condition due in large part to an incomplete understanding of the molecular mechanisms that drive the atrophy process. In previous studies, we identified the transcription factor ATF4 as a critical mediator of skeletal muscle atrophy. We found that ATF4 is necessary and sufficient for skeletal muscle atrophy during limb immobilization. However, ATF4 mKO mice were only partially protected from skeletal muscle atrophy during limb immobilization, indicating the existence of another pro-atrophy factor that acts independently of the ATF4 pathway. Using mouse models, we identify p53 as this ATF4-independent factor. We show that skeletal muscle atrophy increases p53 expression in skeletal muscle fibers. In addition, overexpression of p53 causes skeletal muscle atrophy. Further, p53 mKO mice are partially resistant to muscle atrophy during limb immobilization. Taken together, these data indicate that like ATF4, p53 is sufficient and required for skeletal muscle atrophy during limb immobilization. Importantly, overexpression of p53 induces muscle atrophy in the absence of ATF4, whereas ATF4-mediated muscle atrophy does not require p53. Furthermore, overexpression of p53 and ATF4 induces greater muscle atrophy than p53 or ATF4 alone. Moreover, skeletal muscle lacking both p53 and ATF4 is more resistant to skeletal muscle atrophy than muscle lacking either p53 or ATF4 alone. Taken together, these data indicate that p53 and ATF4 mediate distinct and additive mechanisms to skeletal muscle atrophy. However, the precise mechanism by which p53 and ATF4 cause skeletal muscle atrophy remained unclear. Using genome-wide expression arrays, we identify p21 as a skeletal muscle mRNA that is highly induced by p53 and ATF4 during limb immobilization. Further, overexpression of p21 causes skeletal muscle atrophy. In addition, p21 is required for muscle atrophy due to limb immobilization, p53, and ATF4. Collectively, these results identify p53 and ATF4 as critical and complementary mediators of skeletal muscle atrophy during limb immobilization, and discover p21 as an essential downstream mediator of the p53 and ATF4 pathways.

Abstract:

Paris 10, 1992. http://www.theses.fr/1992PA100128.

Full text
Abstract:
Solitary, discreet, and artist in secret, Emmanuel Bove ( born Emmanuel Bobovnikoff, 1898-1945 ) has earned a lasting place in French literary history with a unique novelistic aesthetic marked by the pervasive malaise of the years between the first and second world wars. Some critics see his work as a remarkable premonition of existentialism, the absurd, and the new novel; others as reminiscent of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, or Gogol. Bove's style, with its simple sentences, and its aspect at once naive and disarmingly mature, is in fact much more complex than it appears. In spite of an objectivity often bordering on cynicism, Bove's universe is above all a poetic one which, even while representing a precise and commonplace reality, must be considered as an imaginary construction with mythical intentions. In this quest for a poetic and visionary realism portraying the human condition as a fall from grace, Bove's aesthetic concerns are close to those of certain English-language novelists like henry James, James Joyce, and Virginia Woolf, and to those of certain of his American contemporaries: Faulkner, Hemingway, Dos Passos, and Fitzgerald

Abstract:
While disenchantment, notably thanks to the awareness of reality that it ensures, does not prove to be exclusively negative, the positivity which generally characterizes re-enchantment can contain a loss of sight of the real that frequently turns out to be more than disappointing. To Emmanuel Bove, as to Romain Gary, it seems that the concept of disenchantment would be formulated from the postulate according to which not only God is dead, but also Mankind and Humanism. As regards the notion of re-enchantment, it would mainly be fulfiled throughout a reinvention of the world, a reinvention that only the power of the imagination and of the liberty it underlies, would be able to cause. It is then that it could be interesting to ponder over the conditions of emergence of disenchantment and re-enchantment among Gary's and Bove's characters : are both these visions of the world, at first glance dichotomous, justified by the protagonists' free and complete will, or do they solely depend on external circumstances ? Do the latter try to distort them or merely to reverse them, or do they find some nobleness to blindly submit to them ?

Chaanda, Mohammed Suleiman. "Cenozoic terrestrial palaeoenvironemtal change : an investigation of the Petrockstowe and Bovey basins, south west United Kingdom." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/5347.

Full text
Abstract:
The Petrockstowe and Bovey basins are two similar pull apart (strike slip) basins located on the Sticklepath – Lustleigh Fault Zone (SLFZ) in Devon, SW England. The SLFZ is one of the several faults on the Cornubian Peninsula and may be linked to Variscan structures rejuvenated in Palaeogene times. The bulk of the basins’ fill consists of clays, silts, lignites and sands of Palaeogene age, comparable to the Lough Neagh Basin (Northern Ireland), which is also thought to be part of the SLFZ. In this study a multiproxy approach involving sedimentary facies analysis, palynological analysis, stable carbon isotope (δ13C) analysis and organic carbon palaeothermometer analyses were applied in an attempt to understand the depositional environment in both basins. A negative carbon isotope excursion (CIE) with a magnitude of 2‰ was recorded at ~ 580 m in the siltstone, silty clay to clay lithofacies in the lower part of Petrockstowe Basin, with minimum δ13CTOC values of -28.6‰. The CIE spans a depth of 7 m. Palynological characteristics of this excursion are correlated with the Cogham Lignite in the southern UK, which is the only established PETM section in the UK, and other continental sections to test whether the palynology associated with this CIE can be used to date it. The age model proposed herein correlates the CIE to the Eocene Thermal Maximum -2 (ETM2; ~ 52.5Ma) event. Key pollen and spore assemblages found in the lower Petrockstowe Basin are Monocolpopollenites, Inaperturopollenites, Laevigatisporites, Bisaccate conifer pollen and Tricolporopollenites, which suggest an Eocene age, while those occurring in the upper part of the Petrockstowe and Bovey basins are Arecipites, Inaperturopollenites, Monocolpopollenites, Tricolporopollenites, Sequoiapollenites, and Pompeckjodaepollenites, which have suggested botanical affinities to modern tropical to sub-tropical genera signifying a climate that was frost-free at the time of sediment deposition. This assemblage further suggests that these sediments are Oligocene to middle Oligocene in age. In the upper part of the Petrockstowe Basin, reconstructed mean annual air temperatures (MAT) demonstrate a clear departure from the mean temperature of 24.5oC at 10 m to 19.5oC towards the top of the core, indicating a steady continuous decline similar to the temperature departures seen in the Solent Group in the Hampshire Basin, Isle of Wight, UK which has an established Eocene – Oligocene succession.

Abstract:
Dealing in a remarquable way with the laws of war, "L'Arbre des batailles", written at the end of the XVIth century by Honorat Bovet, had a great diffusion attested by at least hundred french manuscripts and seven medieval traductions in four languages (Occitan, Catalan, Spanish and Scottish). Only five French manuscripts have been traced wich contain an interpolated vision whose author is Bovet himself. Written in oi͏̈l, this copies of good textual quality reveal numerous occitanisms and called for a study and a critical edition. The oc version indeed contains many gallicisms and a close scrutiny shows that the autorship of this traduction can't be attributed to Bovet, in spite of his provençal origines

Bourassa, Kristin Leigh Erika. "Counselling Charles VI of France : Christine de Pizan, Honorat Bovet, Philippe de Mézières, and Pierre Salmon." Thesis, University of York, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/7601/.

Full text
Abstract:
Four vernacular advice books were dedicated to King Charles VI (r. 1380- 1422) during his reign. Charles became king at the age of eleven, and both Philippe de Mézières’ Songe du vieil pelerin and Honorat Bovet’s Arbre des batailles were dedicated to him in 1389, a year after his declaration of personal rule at the age of twenty. Charles VI began suffering from intermittent periods of mental illness from 1392 until his death. Both Christine de Pizan’s Chemin de long estude (1402-3) and Pierre Salmon’s Dialogues (1409, with a second version in 1412-15) were dedicated to him during this period. The four books suggested solutions to problems posed by the king’s minority and later mental illness, as well as other political concerns including the papal schism, the Anglo-French wars, and the conflicts between the king’s relatives that eventually descended into civil war. Although they have been described as belonging to the modern category of “mirrors for princes,” these books are united more by their common dedication to Charles than by their conformity to a modern understanding of genre. The books’ textual contents and their manuscript images, layout, and circulation demonstrate the importance of the dedication to the construction of their messages. The books’ intended audiences included the king as well as other members of his government and in particular his relatives. The writers authorized their advice by stressing the importance of books and their own credentials, especially their goodwill towards and relationship with the king. They adapted familiar discussions of kingship to suggest concrete solutions to the crises in France, and to urge the king’s relatives to work together to support Charles instead of fighting amongst themselves. The later manuscript circulation of these books demonstrates how such a dedication could be adapted for new audiences in different political circumstances.

Abstract:
Emmanuel Bove wrote some thirty novels and short stories between 1924 and 1945. His writing represented a challenge to the 'Belles lettres ', and was celebrated by Max Jacob and Rainer-Maria Rilke, praised by Samuel Beckett and rediscovered by Peter Handke. His work describes a disintegrating society using the perspective of a central character whose experience of the day-to-day is of a hostile world, be it in a family environment or a country at war, that causes physical and mental illness. Bove's work anticipates the Absurd and Existentialist literature, and its expression of ennui is an aspect of its modernity. Previous studies of Bove's work have analysed its aesthetic qualities and its narrative structures, and compared it with the Nouveau Roman, the literature of the Absurd and Existentialism, Russian novels of the nineteenth century and English!American writing of the first half of the twentieth century. In this study, fiction is shown to be a social and psychological archive, representing the rejection and alienation of the subject, his material deprivation and mental suffering. Despair is emphasised as a constant in the threatening experience that is everyday life. The importance of the family and of socio-historical influences on the subject's condition is discussed. The study examines the possibility of redemption by writing, and analyses how the texts give expression to artistic creation as a positive response to the negative experience of the everyday. The thesis claims that Bove's work is an exploration of the human psyche, its experience of trauma and its responses. It analyses the representation of suffering and the causes of the destruction of the individual. The theoretical support for the interpretation of the texts is drawn mainly from the disciplines of psychology and psychoanalysis. Psychoanalytical theory underpins also the interpretation of references in the text to artistic creation that is indicated as one of the possible responses to suffering. The thesis is divided into two parts. Part One gives an introduction to Bove's life and work (Chapter I); it places Bove's writings in the literary historical context of the development of novel writing from Dostolevski to the Nouveau Roman (Chapter 2), and discusses the approach of previous critics to Bove's work (Chapter 3). Part Two presents an analysis of the expression given to the despair and destruction of the subject and to the compensatory, therapeutic value of creative writing. Chapter 4 focuses on the mind and Chapter 5 on the body.

Abstract:
We have left the industrial society, and instead, we live in a post-industrial knowledge and information society. It is often said that industrial production has disappeared or that it has changed greatly. This means that fewer are employed in the manufacturing sector while the service sector is increasing, resulting in that the boundaries between production and administration decreases. The production goes from mass production to more flexible and specialized solutions. This puts greater demands on the logistics chain that continually need to work to meet customer requirements. Logistics has become a contributing factor to create competitiveness and profitability of a company. There are many companies through efficient logistics increased its market competitiveness. Businesses may have difficulty delivering on time, resulting in customers choosing a competitor instead. For companies to rapidly adapt to what the customer wants today requires well-functioning logistics system. These systems are dependent on qualitative planning and if they cant get that right information it might result in tied capital, which means that products have to be sold at a lower price. Most people know that communication is important, but it still exist deficiencies in many large industrial companies.   The purpose of this paper is to describe how communication between the sales and logistics department works on large industrial companies and to create understanding for how this might affect the internal material flow.   In order to work with this purpose the writers used a qualitative study where a case companie where used to get answers. The study is deductive, meaning that the writers used theory in order to produce data. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews with employees of the case company. The authors used an hermeneutic approach, which means that they interpret the data by themselves.   The theoretical approach used in this study is: communication, material flow and communication impact on the flow of material.  The writhers also read up on Internal communication which is about how information is conveyed intern in a company. It is also presented in relation to the material flow which is about how goods move within the company. The material flow is affected and is constantly in need of internal communication.   The communication process between the sales and logistics department on the case company is containing several steps and torque. Communication is about the flow of information between departments which enables the daily work. This communication consists of oral, written and electronic channels. The electronic channels are used more frequently according to the case company. They used this in form of email and intranet. An overview of the company is considered to be important in order to be able of communicate effectively and means that employees are aware of each other's tasks and understand the needs of others. The overview of the case company is currently weak and therefor affects the internal flow of materials. There are many effects of communication that affects the internal flow of materials, to have an overview is one of these.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Europe is in the midst of its deepest crisis since the 1930s where unsustainable debt-to-GDP levels are among the most alarming issues. It is so critical that it is unsure if the Euro can be saved. The risk of moral hazard increases within EMU when governments are taking too much risk in their public debt policies due to the anticipation that ECB or other Member States would eventually bail them out. Moreover, the SGP imposes restrictions on government deficits and debts but have previously failed to enforce them. The weakness seen in the past is that no sanctions have been put in place once the limits have been breached and the SGP is therefore incredible. Previous research on common pool and debt spillovers in a monetary union point to an upward drift of public debt as countries join the EMU. Does this argument hold true? In order to find out, 25 OECD countries between the years of 1995 and 2010 are analyzed using System GMM Arellano-Bover/Blundell-Bond one-step estimator. The primary balance, the interest payments, and GDP growth are regressed respectively in order to see through what channel EMU displays its effect. One regression will cover the entire time period and another will only cover the years from 1995 to 2007 in order to isolate the effects of the current crisis. The results, based on the years over the entire time period (including the crisis) suggest that the effect of an EMU Membership goes via the Interest payments which it is connected to positively. By using the equation of debt dynamics, the fact that net debt interest payments are higher for a country within EMU indicates, all else equal, that they have on average higher levels of debt. Nevertheless, this realization might be a crisis phenomenon and the implication of this is not clear. However more importantly, the regressions based on the years of 1995 and 2007 (prior to the crisis) did not display any significant results. These results indicate that there is no significant relationship between a country’s membership in EMU and its level of debt prior to the crisis.

Abstract:
2009 - 2010
Abstract:
Archaeobotanical investigations of Medieval sites in Northern France have provided charred and mineralised plant remains. Despite some taphonomical constraints of the different preservation of these plant assemblages, archaebotanical analysis revealed valuable information on the diet, the agriculture and the horticultural production of the medieval population in Northern France between 10th and 12th century AD. Fruit are very abundant and attest a wide-spread fructiculture. Questions like cultivations of "wild forest fruits" or the imported or cultivated status from the figs are asked. The potential of archaeobotanical indicators of social level is to be discussed from the food practices and the diet. Finally, the mineralization process is approached and its induction by practices of purification within latrines/ pits garbage dump is suggested

This study contributes to theory and public policy in Canada and globally. It uses mixed methodology and triangulation of evidence through policy documents(Bovey,Rae,Drummond),empirical studies and surveys(ranking,NSSE data, regression), CAUT/AUCC and Statistics Canada sources and qualitative sources - writings of university presidents (Bok,Kerr,Fallis),researchers (Rajagopal, Clark et al.)as well, talks with sessionals, teaching assistants and administrators. The framework consists of Altbach's four factors - democratization, the knowledge economy, globalisation and competition and three ideal types for university development - entrepreneurial, liberal education and deliberative. The thesis contrasts classical college with the modern university system. The results show strong evidence for research domination, mission drift and shift towards the entrepreneurial model. Quality is compromised by lowering requirements, compressed courses, less study time, large classes taught by sessionals and TAs, grade inflation and consumerist behaviour, while critical thinking and moral development are neglected.

Abstract:
The Age of Revolutions and Independence Wars in New Grenada and Venezuela (1770-1831) was a time of new politics and new forms of authority. Historiography has usually opposed institutional independence leaders to irregular caudillos. Yet this opposition is worthy of discussion. During the Independences, new men acceded to military command functions and, some of them, to political power. These ascents were made possible by a transformation of societies through war, which shook the power of the elites. These groups had actively participated in the juntas movement in 1808-1810. These assemblies had met in the cities, in the name of King Ferdinand VII, deposed by Napoleon Bonaparte. They were then divided between loyalists and independentists. The civil war began, but soon the cities and the elites no longer played the leading roles. New autonomous warlike authorities arose in the countryside and acquired an unexpected military power. The revolts of the colonial era had already demonstrated the ability of subordinates to challenge the existing powers, but this phenomenon took on a new dimension during the wars of independence. New men appeared, like José Tomás Boves in the great plains (the Llanos) of Venezuela who gathered thousands of men under his command. This phenomenon was not exclusive of one political camp. Some were royalists, like Boves or Agualongo in southern Colombia. Others were patriots, like José Antonio Páez, another man from the Llanos, or Manuel Piar in the province of Guayana. Their warlike authority did not come from an irrational charismatic domination, but from a deep work of logistical, strategic and political organization. This work of organization invites us to nuance the opposition between institutional leaders and guerrillas, because they shared practices. The tendency to empower an autonomous military command crystallized in war juntas, demonstrations of the officers’ power. In addition, the study of conceptions of honor and gender relations allows us to understand the fighting masculinities. Women played a fundamental role in certain areas such as logistics and intelligence. Outside the battlefield, war was also fought in pamphlets and newspapers, that were at times glory machines at the service of certain leaders, and also formidable instruments of delegitimization or stigmatization. At the end of the war, Caesarism imposed itself as the political organization capable of uniting the warlike culture, the constitutional culture, and the will of the elites to establish a new social order

Abstract:
2005/2006
The aim of this Phd thesis is to get an insight on recent active seismic events occurring in the area of the Alps-Dinarides junction. This area is tectonically active in the greater scenario of the collision between the Eurasian plate and the African one, particularly the Adria microplate. In this study we have adapted the reflectivity method package developed for applied geophysics purpose to obtain synthetic seismograms related to earthquake signals, in particular for what it concerns the extended source modelling, and we have applied it to study the Friuli area events. In particular, to validate the method, we have performed both the direct modelling of the 2002 Carnia event, obtaining for it a 2km x 2km fault area, and calculated a scenario for the Friuli 1976 event, which turns to be compatible in its pattern with the observed macroseismic intensity felt. In the second part we have performed a JHD relocation for the 2004 Bovec sequence, comparing the aftershock relocations with those related to the 1998 sequence. We have observed that the 1998 rupture continued towards NW during the 2004 event. This is in agreement with the post event Coulomb's stress distribution, obtained by modelling the 1998 Bovec event. From the Coulomb stress modelling we recognize also a general increase of stress to the West and to the East of Bovec epicentral area. At last we have performed a waveform source parameter inversion for four events in the Friuli area and eleven events in the Western Slovenia area (magnitude mainly M>3.5), finding fault plane solutions in agreement with both the North-South directed stress field and the geometry of faults in each of the areas.

Abstract:
Student Number : 9709225V - MSc project report - School of Construction Economics and Management - Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment
This research was conducted in order to highlight the misconception that there may be a single answer to the challenges of energy efficient design; a “single elixir that will be the answer to all problems” (Holm, 1996). Existing literature pertaining to energy efficient design principles was analysed and tested against a well known example of Southern African energy efficient building practice; the Botswana Technology Centre (BOTEC). BOTEC was selected as the case study for this investigation because it was designed to be a living exhibition of energy efficient design and as such a manual or ‘elixir’ for alternate design. BOTEC was analysed on site, personal interviews were held with the architect and a questionnaire was circulated to the users of the building in order to observe whether the principles used at the BOTEC building are appropriate and represent the “single elixir, the answer to all problems,” with regard to energy efficient design (Holm, 1996). Although BOTEC appears to perform well, interviews with the users of the BOTEC building suggest that the building does not perform well in winter at all. Interviews with the architectural consultant who worked on the BOTEC building expose a simple oversight in design which leads to ‘this building’s underperformance in winter’. In concurrence with Holm therefore, this report ultimately shows that there are no perfect solutions to energy efficient design and by applying a once successful solution without taking cognisance of specific climatic and geological differences, the building will not function correctly.

Herwijnen, Wouter van. "Rentree van de profetie." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/3406.

Full text
Abstract:
Dutch text with Dutch and English summaries
The main question is whether prophecy is still possible in our time. Reformed theology taught for centuries that with the closing of the canon prophecy came to an end. Prophecy since then was equated with the proclamation of the Word of God. Is such a viewpoint correct? Is the church not obliged to test any prophecy against given meaningful biblical criteria? In the forties of the 20th century the Reformed minister A.A. Leenhouts had a prophecy which he reckoned would have shone light on the world around him. He repeatedly asked for the prophecy to be tested which in fact did not happen. Leenhouts finally found himself outside the Reformed church. In this study it is firstly investigated whether prophecy is still possible after the conclusion of the biblical canon, secondly, how the prophecies people receive are to be tested, and thirdly what are the criteria we have to employ regarding the phenomenon of prophecy. In this regard the prophecy of Leenhouts is also scrutinised and tested. During this study I encountered within Reformed theology an increasing number of theologians who regard prophecy still possible after the conclusion of the canon. Amongst them is professor E. van Niekerk from South Africa. The Dutch Rev W. Smouter is suprisingly close to his views. In this study it is investigated who Leenhouts was, in which situation he received his prophecy, how these words fitted into his time and what the reaction of others was on his prophecy. Before the prophecy of Leenhouts is tested his prophecy is materially compared to the views of others, especially in regard to the nation of Israel and the return of Christ. His views are also compared with representatives of the Reformed tradition, the Enlightenment and Dispensationalism. Leenhouts prophecy is also tested with the criteria the General Synod of the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands has devised for prophecy. Besides, we add the following criteria: whether the prophecy of Leenhouts throws new light on the Bible and whether in Van Niekerk’s view God’s Spirit is really busy writing a Third Testament in cooperation with us in the present era.

In this thesis, the texts of Mireille Cottenje (Dagboek van Carla - 1968), Daisy Ver Boven (Mayana - 1974), Henriette Claessens (Afscheid van Rumangabo - 1983) and Lieve Joris (Terug naar Kongo - 1987) were respectively studied as representative of the colonial literature written by female authors. The aim is to establish how stature is given in the literature to the Africa experience by the female author. In the first instance the concept colonial literature is discussed followed by a historical review of the Flemish African literature from the pre-colonial to the postcolonial era. After an analysis has been completed to evaluate the individual perspectives of the different authors, it appears that the female authors reveal shared perspectives in their views on the colonial era. Through knowledge of the work of these authors, an image of the colonial Congo can be found, as it lives on in the world of the female literator

Abstract:
0 ABSTRACT In my thesis I focus on the political situation in the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Kingdom of France during the Great Western Schism, particularly its first two thirds. I put emphasis on the personality of Honoré Bovet, who was a diplomat and a messenger of the French king and who visited the court of the Bohemian king, Wecleslas IV. in 1399 My work is based on primary and secondary sources and scientific and specialised literature concerning the subject mentioned above. In addition I made use of my one- semester study program in France where I attended the lectures of and consultations with French medieval historians. First I describe in the thesis the ecclesiastical and political situation in both kingdoms. The next chapters are dedicated to the personality of Honoré Bovet and his writings related to his opinion on the Great Western Schism and the church in general. As a result of the research I present a general attitude of the French Kingdom to the Bohemian Kingdom, particularly king Wenceslas IV, in the period of the Great Western Schism and the dual papacy. Moreover, based on his writings I express Bovet's view of the Schism and the personalities involved in the Schism.
