Mouzelis, Nicos. "Habitus and Reflexivity: Restructuring Bourdieu's Theory of Practice." Sociological Research Online 12, no. 6 (January 2008): 123–28. http://dx.doi.org/10.5153/sro.1449.

Abstract:
Contrary to Bourdieu's thesis, it is not only when a subject's habitus does not fit a field's positions that s/he becomes more reflexive. Reflexivity is also enhanced by intra-habitus tensions, by more general incongruences between dispositions, positions, and interactive/figurational structures, as well as by situations unrelated to them. Because of his ambitious but unsuccessful attempt to transcend the objectivist-subjectivist divide in the social sciences, Bourdieu underemphasizes the interactive dimension of social games, and this creates serious problems for his conceptualization of the linkages between habitus, reflexivity, and practices. The way to make Bourdieu's theory of practice less functionalist and/or deterministic is to restructure it so that it seriously takes into account not only the dispositional and positional but also the interactive dimension of social games. It then becomes obvious that reflexive accounting, conscious strategizing, and rational calculation are not exceptional but routine, constitutive elements of human action.

Abstract:
This article draws on Bourdieu's sociological approach to expand social movement theory, while offering sociologically robust direction for movements themselves. In Bourdieu's theory, practical action is produced by the habitus. Generated in its social field, habitus conveys cultural encoding yet in a nondeterministic manner. In a Bourdieusian approach, environmental social movement organizations become the social space in which a logic of practice consistent with movement goals can be "caught" through the informal or incidental learning that occurs as a result of participation with social movement organizations. I compare Bourdieu's theory of practice with Eyerman and Jamison's view of social movements as cognitive praxis. I argue that the environmental movement would be better served by conceptualizing itself as working to create an ecological habitus which would underpin ecological lifestyles and environmental social change

Abstract:
PurposeThis paper explores budgetary practices in a Tanzanian university after decentralization.MethodologyData were collected through interviews, document analysis, and observation. Moreover, Bourdieu's theory was used in open and axial coding procedures for data analysis.FindingsThe findings show that decentralized budgeting was a disillusionment. Administrators failed to transfer financial authority to resource recipients. Budgetary practices were shaped by the social structure/budget cycle (field), resources possessed by budgetary actors (capital) and the sincerity patterns of actors in budgetary practices (habitus). Most resource recipients had insincerity in budgeting habitus deploying subversive strategy, while the minority had sincerity in budgeting habitus, deploying submissive strategy. On the other hand, administrators had sincerity and insincerity in budgeting habitus, deploying conservative strategy.Practical implicationsIn order to enhance effective decentralization, resource recipients should be provided with adequate financial resources and budgeting skills. Furthermore, they should be trusted and recognized. Moreover, in order to shape budgeting strategies and practices towards achieving organizational objectives, managements should identify and work on internal, external and technical budgetary constraints. In addition, they should promote sincerity in budgeting habitus as habitus can be created, altered, and reproduced through knowledge.Originality/ValueThis is the first paper to investigate budgetary practices in a university setting, employing all Bourdieu's six theoretical concepts. It contributes to Bourdieu's theory by introducing a submissive strategy. In addition, it introduces “episteme” concept as the opposite of “doxa.” Moreover, the paper responds to the call by Deering and Sá (2018) to investigate what guides budgetary practices in a university setting. The paper has also demonstrated the role of approval organs and subordinates which were neglected in prior studies. It proposes a theory of budgetary practice in a University setting when budgeting is decentralized. It thus responds to the call to investigate and theorize the role of actors in calculative practices (such as budgeting) in a University setting (Argento et al., 2020; Aleksandrov, 2020; Grossi et al., 2020; Ozdil and Hoque, 2017).

AbstractThis study aims to reveal the habitus, capital, and arena in Pakne Puri's “Salindri Kenya Kebak Wewadi” based on the perspective of Bourdieu's literary sociology. Related to this, the formulation of the problem in this research is: how are the habitus, capital, and arena in the “Salindri Kenya Kebak Wewadi” by Pakne Puri? This research method uses an objective approach and a discursive approach using Bourdieu's theory, namely habitus, capital, and the arena in the “Salindri Kenya Kebak Wewadi” by Pakne Puri. The data used in this study are in the form of words, phrases, clauses, or sentences taken from one of the literary works in the form of a cursive. The source of the data for this research is the story of “Salindri Kenya Kebak Wewadi” by Pakne Puri published by “Panjebar Semangat” magazine edition No. 33-15 August 2009 to 50-12 December 2009. The results of this study are a description of the habitus, capital, and arena in “Salindri Kenya Kebak Wewadi”. Based on the habitus found in the Salindri character who wants to be successful in continuing his parents' batik business. These habits include the habitus of capital, the habitus of hard workers, and the habitus of never giving up. Based on the capital from Salindri, there are economic capital, cultural capital, social capital, and symbolic capital. Based on the arena, there is a business arena in which Salindri's business arena tries to carry out its functions as well as possible so that the business that is built remains afloat even at the expense of itscompetitors. Abstract:
This article examines the theory of Pierre Bourdieu, a French sociologist, in dismantling mechanisms of injustice against women in the realm of practical politics. The idea of Bourdieu's theory of habitus, capital, arena, violence and symbolic power will be used as the perspective of gender inequality in uncovering the mechanisms of violence against women, particularly women involved in politics. The occurrence of various forms of violence against women, according to Bourdieu's theory, can not be separated from their symbolic violence that became the basis for other types of violence, such as physical, psychological, economic, and sexual. Symbolic violence is a form of violence that is not easily recognizable. Violence operates through symbols the object hegemonic discourse dominated. The roots of this violence habitus operates through women who are positioned as subordinate in society. Violence that works at the level of discourse, it will not make women understand and appreciate that they become the object and will not resist

Abstract:
Today Pierre Bourdieu is well known as one of the most important social scientists of the 20th century. One of the outstanding qualities of his work has been his innovative combination of different methods and research strategies as well as his analytical skills in interpreting the obtained data (his ‘sociological gaze’). In this paper, we attempt to retrace the development of an extraordinary way of doing social research and show the benefit of Bourdieu's visual sociology for his empirical fieldwork and sociological theory. The article particularly stresses the significance of his photographic archive, which has long been ignored within the appreciation of Bourdieu's work. Studying Bourdieu's photography gives access to his æuvre in several new ways: not only can we understand how Bourdieu became an unconventional sociologist practicing his craft in the midst of a colonial war. Bourdieu's visual anthropology also offers an insight into the status nascendi of Bourdieu's sociology in all its elementary forms and contents. Through his photography Boudieu demonstrated the concepts of ‘ habitat and habitus’, the material and symbolic living conditions of the Algerian population.

According to Bourdieu, practice is a product of habitus and domain relations, where in the realm there is a risk of the power of people who have a lot of capital, as well as people who do not have capital. The issue of space, habitus and capital in Pierre Bourdieu's theory becomes important to analyze every case of terrorism, because it is able to make it clear. Abstract:
Abstract In the last two decades, Bourdieu’s sociology has provided appropriate tools for examining the work of literary translators through history. However, Bourdieusian approaches to literary translation seem to reproduce a major problem underlying Bourdieu’s theory; namely, a deterministic view of human behaviour. This article, against the alleged incompatibility between sociological approaches and culturalist paradigms, proposes to combine Bourdieu’s sociology with the notion of transculturation borrowed from Latin American cultural studies. The article demonstrates how transculturation helps elucidating the divided and contradictory nature of the habitus, as it was originally formulated by Bourdieu in his early writings on Kabylian society. Data from my previous study on the translational activity of Dai Wangshu in Republican China are used to illustrate how transculturation reveals itself as a valid model for the study of literary translators through history beyond the limitations of a sociologically-informed approach based exclusively on a Bourdieusian perspective.

This research in entitled “The Social Aspects of the Main Characters in Mahou Hakase Short Stories”. The purpose of this research is to know the social aspects including habitus, capital, domain, and practice of the main character named Genko Sensei in the short story of Mahou Hakase by Iwaya Sazanami. The theory used is the theory of literary sociology popularized by Pierre Bourdieu regarding habitus, capital, domain, and practice. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods as well as data collection by referring to and taking notes. The data used in the form of paragraphs, sentences, and dialogs in the short story. The results of this study found 38 sosial aspects including 7 habitus, 11 capital, 4 domains, and 16 practices owned by Genko Sensei. Habitus that he had was a good relationship, considered to be good and honest, and able to change bad habits into good. This he combined with capital held in the form of money, a college degree, public speaking skills, do not hesitate to act, confident, good cooperation skills and magic abilities. By utilizing the habitus and capital, Genko Sensei able to do a lot of practice (such as lingers though without legs, grow horns to fight the enemy, and others) to master the realm of Germany, the University, and the Palace. In the end, he was able to become famous, get a degree, defeat the enemy, gain power by winning the hearts of the King at the palace, and received a lot of gifts. Above aligned with Pierre Bourdieu's theory about the relationship habitus, capital, and domains, resulting in practice to seize power.

Abstract:
This study looks at symbolic violence in Alex Urban's novel The Kingfisher Secret. In Alex Urban's work The Kingfisher Secret, the author investigates the emergence of symbolic violence and analyzes Bourdieu's capital and habitus. To assist the understanding of symbolic violence, this research employs Pierre Bourdieu's symbolic violence idea, as well as habitus, field, and capital theory. This study employs Wellek and Warren's extrinsic method, in which literary material is examined from a social perspective. The author employs a descriptive qualitative technique to locate symbolic violence. The findings demonstrate that in Alex Urban's work The Kingfisher Secrets, symbolic violence is portrayed by offering a present (gift exchange), expressing compassion, delivering an order (indirect command), and respectfully declining. The habitus is brutally capitalistic, rationalizing any means and aspirations to improve one's life and circumstances. The agency uses symbolic violence to achieve its goals and gain dominance.

Abstract:
Despite the still present hegemony of the structural-functionalist orthodoxy, the mid 1980's witnesses the insurgence of new philosophical approaches. This body of work had become a vital intellectual and ideological resource for those who wanted to confront the functionalist dominance in organization studies, such as structuration theory, labour process theory and neoinstitutionalist theory. The purpose of this paper is to review the incorporation of Bourdieu's work into neoinstitutionalism. I argue that this appropriation has resulted in a significant loss of theoretical strength. By giving place to the cognitivist metaphors of mental models, "scripts" and "schemas", instead of adopting the notion of habitus, neoinstitutionalism reinforces some of the ever-present dichotomies in social sciences, especially those of agency/structure and individual/society. While neoinstitutionalism was refining the cognitive approach in the 1990's, Bourdieu was moving towards psychoanalysis. Some indications for future research are provided in the concluding notes.

Abstract:
Pascale Casanova’s world literature theory and methodology developed in The World Republic of Letters draws heavily from Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology. While criticism to date has noted that Casanova builds on Bourdieu and makes use of a number of his concepts, the extent to which Bourdieu underpins Casanova’s work has not been fully uncovered. This paper analyses some of the methodological, conceptual, and theoretical elements which Casanova has drawn from Bourdieu, particularly through her adaptation and development of concepts such as the literary field, illusio, and habitus. In an explicit sense, Casanova extends Bourdieu’s nationally focused field theory and analysis to a complex international scale. Yet, more implicitly, Casanova draws on concepts such as illusio, habitus, and methods of critical reflexivity and epistemological vigilance, which she also borrows from Bourdieu. As such, by reading Bourdieu in Casanova, it is possible to gain a deeper understanding of Casanova’s theory and methodology.

This research refers to the trend of women's makeup in the 2020 era, which is dominated by natural makeup. Influencers and makeup artists have a role in popularizing it. The author is interested in examining the makeup behavior in women with Bourdieu's theory. What behaviors make a woman look natural, prioritize skin health, minimal makeup. What culture is behind it. The findings of this study are all women like makeup, habitus leads to natural makeup. Habitus emphasized freedom in analyzing a practice as an agent and social structure. Women have a habitus in using makeup determined by a dual mechanism not just the dominance of social media factors, but also played by self-freedom as women as influencers in the social media itself. The arena is an environment where strength is at stake in the struggle over capital resources. Social media is an arena, a different social space, more enabling women to compete more dynamically in gaining position and legitimacy. Women use practices in makeup as a strategy in winning a competition. The makeup practice is an accumulation of women's capital and habitus, where every woman is different in her practice. The method used in this research includes in-depth interviews with women who use makeup, as well as literacy studies of the concepts of capital, habitus, and the realm. The results showed that women undergoing their practice experienced "ambiguity" or dilemmas when using make-up strategies in their social arena.

AbstractThe discursive search for the institutionalization of interior design leads us to analyze the field of habitat in which architecture has become the guiding discipline. Interior design appears as a kind of entropy. In Bourdieu's Field Theory, design "intrudes" in terms of transformation and reconfiguration of that field, where its emergence does not necessarily imply the destruction of disciplinary premises. Rather, the new discipline emerges as a process inherent to the revolutionary deconstruction of the appearance of new and novel forms, mechanisms, configurations and structures themselves, analyzing, revising and reinterpreting the background. Sports or the practice of sporting have progressed in parallel with the history of humanity, just as they have developed in parallel with humanity. The sports field, which has a growing interest in social life, has started to occupy the field of social science in time. Since the mid-1900s, sports have become a sub-field of sociology and been discussed in various methodological and theoretical aspects by many people. Especially since the 1980s, Pierre Bourdieu has been one of the important figures whose sociological perspective is utilized in the field of sports sociology. Especially, the “metaphor of playing” that he put forward by gathering his theoretical perspective in one frame shows a serious parallelism with the sociality of sports. Bourdieu's concepts of field, habitus and capital, which constitute the trivet of the theory of action and draws attention to the emphasis on the construction processes, historicity and autonomy of the field are frequently used in studies by researchers working in the field of sports in order to reveal how the sports field is built in social space and with which network of relationships it exists. For this reason, the development processes, the possibilities of Bourdieu's theoretical framework for, and Bourdieu's explanations on the sociology of sports, and how to build a sports field in a social space are discussed.

Abstract:
This article is part of a doctoral thesis in development whose empirical research motivated the construction and preparation of a bibliographic survey about the category of habitus in Bourdieusian theory, with the aim of building a reflection on the relationship between the meaning of habitus in Bourdieu (1980), in the specific field of work, and illness from the process of productive restructuring, recovering old paradigms that condition the contemporary reality. It starts from the understanding that work is the element that clarifies the social mediations necessary to apprehend the history of society, and, therefore, it is not a field that is excluded from Bourdieu's conceptual universe, but constitutes it in the proportion in which it integrates and influences the habitus of social agents. In this sense, we problematize the author's contributions, relating them to the discussions carried out by the sociology of work, valuing those concerning the ideopolitical determinations of the "new neoliberal reason" for the phenomenon of social precariousness of work and the consequences for the subjectivity and illness of workers. In this sense, it is understood that the multi-causal nexus between the habitus of social precarization of work and the process of psychological suffering remains in the social invisibility, either because of the political intentionality, or because of the automated and immediatist rationality present in our society.

Arena in Bourdieu's concept of genetic structuralism is described as struggle, power struggle, domination, and conflict between individuals, between groups to get their position. This position can be achieved through habitus and capital. This study aims to describe (1) habitus, (2) capital, and (3) the arena of Christine Nöstlinger in the 21st-century children's and youth literature. This research used an expressive approach by utilizing Pierre Bourdieu's Theory of Genetic Structuralism (years). Sources of research data were Nöstlinger, Christine (2013). Glück ist was für Augenblicke, Errinnerungen. Wien: Residenz Verlag. Data were obtained by literature study, reading and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis techniques. The validity of the data was obtained through semantic validity. The reliability used is intrarater and interrater reliability. The results of this study are as follows: (1) Christine Nöstlinger's habitus in this study includes reading, discussing, drawing, and writing (2) her capital encompasses economic capital, social capital, cultural capital, and symbolic capital, (3) the arena that Christine Nöstlinger is fighting for is the 21st-century children's and youth literature with 147 main works and 38 awards in children's and youth literature. This achievement confirms Christine Nöstlinger's position as a 21st-century German writer of children's and youth literature. Keywords: Christine Nöstlinger, genetic structuralism, habitus, capital, arena

Abstract:
Bourdieu’s theory of practice is a useful tool to understand people’s everyday behaviours, dispositions and habits. However, this theory struggles to explain how some people diverge from the social norms that structure their habitus. This article proposes an extension of Bourdieu’s theory of practice by incorporating Freire’s conscientisation, that is, a theory of how individuals develop a critically conscious awareness through engagement with the world around them. Here, we use young people’s engagement in activism as a case study to show how these two theories can work together. We analysed previous youth activism research articles to explore how the theory of practice and conscientisation can explain the representations made of young people’s activism. Combining the two theories allows an explanation of how and why the young people in the studies that we reviewed took pathways of alternative actions from within their habitus. We argue that by adding Freire’s conscientisation to Bourdieu’s theory of practice, young people’s activism can be understood as the development of a generational radical habitus.

Abstract:
This study aims to reveal gay habitus in Becky Albertalli's Simon VS The Homo Sapiens Agenda. This study is descriptive qualitative which applies both intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic approach is applied due to the fact that the study deals with the characterization of the main character in the novel. Moreover, the sociological approach is applied because the study is primarily concerned with a social phenomenon reflected in literary work as the novel portrays the representation of gay habitus reflected in the attitude and behaviours of one of the main characters in the novel. In revealing the gay habitus reflected in the novel, Bourdieu's theory of habitus is applied. The discussion is focused on the Simon's habitation as a gay and the factors that contribute to the formation of Simon's habitus as a gay. The result of the study shows that Simon develops gay habitus. The representations of his gay habitus include are having no attraction to the opposite sex, adoring the same sex, obsessing and fantasizing about the same sex, feeling jealous and cynical to the suspected competitors, and falling in love with the same sex. There are two factors that support the development of Simon's gay habitus i.e. primary and secondary socialization.

The title of this article is "The Power of Abah as Customary Leader at the Seren Taun Traditional Ceremony in Kasepuhan Cipta Mulya, Sukabumi Regency, West Java." The purpose of this research is to expose the relevance of Abah's function and power as a traditional leader at the traditional seren taun ceremony, as well as the stages of the traditional seren taun ritual procedure. This study's method is a qualitative research technique that is explained descriptively. Meanwhile, to evaluate this research, the researcher used Foucault and Weber's theory of power, as well as Pierre Bourdieu's theory of habitus, arena, and capital. According to the findings of this study, Abah, as the traditional leader in the execution of the traditional ceremony of seren taun, always uses capital, habitus, and arena in controlling and establishing the smooth functioning of traditional rituals. Abah's power, shown via these three characteristics, enables the phases of the ancient seren taun ritual to be carried out properly and to be passed down from generation to generation to this day. The intention of this paper is to serve as a reflexive comment as to my ongoing empirical processes and epistemological position concerning research on university graduates’ aspirations and expectations of graduate employment. This paper will illustrate the inevitable role of social theory in empirical research, and from a Bourdieusian position, consider the use of theory in creating a break with common sense, the danger of replacing common sense with learned bias, and processes that may aid to avoid this problematic issue. Using educational research as a tangible basis, this paper will discuss the empirical application of the habitus in creating a break with common sense, whilst not losing itself to social theory. However, in an effort to depart from simply offering a comment on the need for the application of theory in educational research, this paper intends to demonstrate how the neo-positivist biographical narrative interview method can, contrary to BOURDIEU's (1987) comments, illuminate the habitus, offering an opportunity for its empirical application in educational research and also for the wider academy.

Abstract:
Based on two empirical studies of senior executives, this article examines key aspects of Bourdieu's theory of the reproduction of social class structures. In the European business elite, to what extent can one find empirical evidence for the central significance accorded to class specific habitus and exclusive educational institutions in this process? To this end, the article presents comprehensive information about the social origin and educational trajectories of the chairpersons of the 100 largest German and French enterprises from 1995, compared to corresponding statistics from the years 1970 to 1972. An analysis of this information shows that in both countries, almost 80% of senior executives are recruited from the social elite: the gehobenes Bürgertum or the classe dominant. In France, the main source for this elite recruiting is located in educational system, with sharp selection mechanisms involved in the granting of exclusive degrees. In contrast, these play only a subordinate role in Germany. The primary criteria here are the personality traits deemed desirable for certain positions. These strongly favour offspring of the gehobenes Burgertum. In the end, class-specific habitus turns out to be decisive in a direct sense (Germany) or indirectly (France) for the reproduction of social relations. Bourdieu's analysis is thus confirmed in its main points.

Abstract The article shows that the work of Thorstein Veblen and Pierre Bourdieu builds a foundation of a mentality-driven contextual economics. In order to achieve this goal, it will be demonstrated that Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of distinction, and his concept of habitus, is a widely overlooked descendant of Thorstein Veblen’s Theory of the Leisure Class and that both approaches highlight the necessity for including mental models into economic analysis. Consequently, the purpose of this paper is to develop a comparative analysis of Veblen’s and Bourdieu’s theories of cultural capital and mental models to demonstrate the proximity of both concepts to contemporary economic thought. In short, I argue that Bourdieu’s habitus concept must be understood as a logical progression of Veblen’s theory of distinction, and that the findings from both approaches call for a turn towards mentality-driven economic analysis. Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate Mohsin Hamid’s novel, The Reluctant Fundamentalist by utilizing the theory of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. The study, a theoretical construct founded on two key concepts from Bourdieu’s theory, namely habitus and field, aims at offering a new perspective to understand the dilemma of the protagonist Changez from a sociological cultural perspective. It shows how Changez cultivates his habitus to pursue a specific taste in America through multiple forms of cultural capital and manifests how these forms shape his attitudes and relations. It also offers a metaphorical portrayal of Changez as a footballer who struggles within various positions to retain power and eventually fulfill his American dream through both the macrocosmic and microcosmic social fields that he finds himself in. The assumption that this paper is seeking to validate is that there is a common ground between the novel and Bourdieu’s theory of practice in some key concepts and that understanding the habitus and the doxa of Changez’ social fields can help understand his practices, dispositions, and most importantly the reasons behind him leaving America.

Data collection was carried out by conducting in-depth interviews with key informants who took turns to obtain data triangulation. The results showed that the implementation of CSR on the research site was well organized and structured and became a permanent and incidental program. CSR is implemented based on the principle of "dual commitment", which is the belief that if a company wants to be successful in business, the company must be successful socially. The process of defining and understanding CSR towards corporate sustainability is pursued by forming a habitus, maintaining the existence of capital and mastering the field, this is in line with Bourdieu's concept of social practice.

Abstract:
Pierre Bourdieu built his theoretical orientation as a solution to what he saw as a false opposition between objectivism and subjectivism; to quote Bourdieu: “absurd opposition between individual and society”. Bourdieu offered a point of view that emphasizes on duality in the relationship between agent and structure, as an alternative to the previously existing dualistic views. Bourdieu refers to his theoretical orientation as genetic structuralism, constructivist structuralism or structuralist constructivism. Through the concept of habitus, field, and capital, Bourdieu integrated objectivism (which emphasizes the role of objective structure in social practice) and subjectivism (which emphasizes the role of agent in social practice). Bourdieu formulated the theory of social practice with the equation (Habitus x Capital) + Field = Practice. Practice, in Bourdieu’s mind, is the product of the relationship between habitus and field, wherein within field itself there are powers at stake, especially between people with capital and people without capital.

Kata Kunci : Kantor Teater Jakarta, menolak sutradara, glamoritas, eksklusifisme, teater jalanan, habitus This paper is a preliminary study of the phenomenon of the Kantor Teater Jakarta (KTJ), a theatre group that rejects the existence of a director in every creative process. This study uses qualitative research methods to record KTJ's creative journey in the perspective of Pierre Bourdieu's habitus theory. This study describes the beginning of KTJ's creative journey that is full of 'painexperiences', often experiences limited space and opposition from the community, and also often confronts ecurity officers who often castrate their creativity. Space limitations, glamorous, and exclusivity of theatre and performances in Indonesia made them formulate the concept of 'portabletheatre'. KTJ faces this glamorous exclusivity by 'throwing the actors bodies out of the stage' and making their own theatre on the streets. In this way KTJ can perform wherever they want. Transnational entrepreneurship is becoming an increasingly important global phenomenon with enormous impact on economic, social, and political structures worldwide. Drawing on Bourdieu's theory of practice, we assess how transnational entrepreneurs (TEs) may balance their network scope and network size in dual environments to enhance their ability to operate in both environments. Using a sample of 452 U.S. Latin American TEs, we find that balanced network size and network scope in the respective institutional settings enhance the degree of transnational venture activities. More importantly, we find that the joint effects of balancing network size with network scope are significantly greater than their individual effects.

The involvement of residents in the development of tourist villages is a very appropriate form of formulation in the sustainable development of tourist villages. This study aims to determine the habits of the fostered residents in the development of the tourist village of Kampung Mask, Tlogowaru Village, Kedungkandang District, by looking at the social practices that take place in it. The theory used is Pierre F Bourdieu's theory of social practice. The research uses qualitative methods with data collection techniques through participatory observation, open interviews, documentation, and relevant literature studies. Interviews were conducted on research subjects who were selected through a purposive sampling technique in which the informants consisted of the management of the village of mask tourism, namely the head of the welfare institution for the Prosperous People, the assisted residents who live there and related stakeholders/elements. The data collection instrument uses interview sheets, observation sheets, documentation tools and other tools needed in the data collection process. To ensure data validity, the researcher applies data source triangulation and data analysis techniques, namely Miles & Huberman interactive analysis. The study results indicate that the habitus and capital owned by the assisted residents in the village of mask tourism have yet to be utilized and developed optimally. The lack of attention to the habitus and capital of the inmates, which, by optimizing the habitus and capital, can contribute to the development of the Kampung Mask tourist village. In addition, it can be seen that there is no maximum utilization of natural potential due to limited economic capital and the inmates' mindset that has not changed.

The objective of this study perceives how the advertising agencies assign women to the position of the company leader as a patriarchal effort (as "the right hand" of the capitalists) to “muted” women in "comfortable" place. This research applies Pierre Bourdieu's Habitus-Field-Capital theory and its implications in the form of symbolic violence. This descriptive research applies constructivism paradigm. Obtained by conducting in-depth interviews with women leaders of advertising agencies, the data are examined using hermeneutic phenomenology. As a result, it becomes more and more difficult for female CEOs in advertising agencies--as a part of the media text producer--to recognize the acts of that violence. They rather duplicate and mimicking the symbolic violence in the texts they produce. Involving women in the agencies does not necessarily yield to the gender-perspective texts as the automatic reflection of their thoughts, habits, and acts. It occurs because each social field is always full of subjective-contestation discourse which potentially generates dominating behaviors among the actors.

Despite the centrality of the notion of “capital,” scholarship on international migration has yet to fully explore the generative potential of Bourdieu’s theory. This article “thinks with” Bourdieu to theorize how states, aspiring migrants, and migration brokers interact over the valorization, conversion, and legitimization of various types of capital for migration purposes. Drawing on Bourdieu’s theorization on the state, I identify the variegated ways in which state policies and their enactment by frontline gatekeepers constitute migration-facilitating capital. I show how migration brokers help migrants acquire adequate capital—or the semblance of possession of such capital—to contest the state’s monopolistic claim over the governance of identity, qualification, and mobility. Drawing on Bourdieu’s conceptualization of field, habitus, illusio, and symbolic violence, I analyze how migrants partake in “organized striving” for migration-facilitating capital, the uneven distribution of which produces material and symbolic stratification.

Abstract:
Drought is a serious problem that often arises when the dry season arrives. Usually, this situation occurs in an area that continuously experiences below-average rainfall so that the water supply becomes less. In general, the onset of a drought disaster cannot be known, but it can be said that drought occurs when the available water is no longer sufficient for daily needs. One example is the drought that occurred in Jatisari Village, Arjasa District, Situbondo Regency. The people of Jatisari Village have to try hard to get water that is used for their daily needs such as drinking, cooking, bathing, and washing. This study uses Pierre Bourdieu's theory of habitus. Habitus is the mental or cognitive structure by which people relate to the social world. This study uses qualitative research methods, with a focus on the ethnographic approach. Ethnography focuses on groups that share a common culture. The results of the research obtained are that the habitus in Jatisari Village makes the community have a helping nature as evidenced by the existence of mutual cooperation in making water sources and repairing damaged bore wells. Then there is harmony with neighbors when they are allowed to borrow water, entrusting the jurigen to fetch water, and the honesty of the community when conducting water transactions makes the relationship closer in society. Keywords: Adaptation to Climate Change, Drought, Habitus

According to Bourdieu, class position is related to cultural capital, taste, and preferences. Accordingly, the author states that, because of their “habitus,” those from high social classes have higher cultural capital and preferences for highbrow culture, which gives them more chances to succeed in life. On the contrary, those from low social classes have lower cultural capital because of their lowbrow cultural preferences, which makes it more difficult for them to achieve in a system that favors the dominant classes. Through the review of articles on Dialogic Literary Gatherings published in peer-reviewed journals, this article aims to provide more insights on how the principles of dialogic learning occur. The results of the review challenge Bourdieu’s concept of “habitus,” providing evidence of how socioeconomic status (SES) is not determinant to cultural capital.

Interventions framed through a behavioural lens, particularly ‘Nudge’, are gaining credence in US and UK policy circles, not least around healthcare. Key tenets of this ‘libertarian paternalist’ approach are discussed and related to sociological theory. The influential position of nudge begs sociological engagement, indeed its recognition of ‘choice architecture’ is partially congruent with sociological conceptions of structure-embedded agency. Though recognising the significance of norms, the analysis of nudge fails to appreciate their depth in terms of time, materiality and the socio-cultural. The potency and variable consequences of these social factors are emphasised through Bourdieu's concepts of habitus and field. This framework alongside various sociological approaches to risk and uncertainty are proposed as potentially fruitful paths of critical engagement.

Abstract:
The research problem with the study that underpins this article is that Instagram manipulates the consumption habits of daily life in an intense manner. In this context, the main purpose of the article is to examine how people change their consumption habits by being affected by Instagram in daily life. In this context, answers to the questions of what Instagram and consumption mean in daily life and what are their effects were sought. Along with the globalization process and capitalism, Instagram, which is one of the popular social media tools especially in recent years, has started to affect people positively and negatively in cultural, social and economic terms. One of these effects is consumption habits. However, people's lifestyles and social identities are changing. The theoretical basis of this study is relational sociology and Pierre Bourdieu's (1984) concepts of “habitus”, “field” and “taste”. How Instagram manipulates consumption habits has been tried to be put forward with a Grounded Theory approach. In the empirical part of the study, in-depth interviews were made with 14 women who are Instagram users. Research findings reveal that the consumption habits of individuals change from utilitarian consumption to hedonist consumption. These hedonist consumption habits, on the other hand, can be said to lead people away from their own social realities and to alienate themselves and society.

Abstract:
The article provides a sociological interpretation of the concept of the «athlete’s habitus» performed through the prism of P. Bourdieu’s theory based on sociological research data. To describe the athletes’ habitus, data of the following sociological studies were used: interviews with athletes studying at the Faculty of Physical Culture and Sports of Lobachevsky University (n = 74 persons representing individual and team sports in a 50/50 ratio); secondary analysis of interviews with mothers of high-performance athletes (n = 3 persons); participant observation carried out during the training and sports process with representatives of the following sports: volleyball, basketball, hockey, athletics, martial arts. The grounded theory approach, proposed by A. Strausset and D. Corbin, was used to analyze the data obtained during the interviews with student athletes, part of which were applied the method of «life histories» (analysis of the life of athletes from their mothers’ words) and conversational analysis (analysis of the interviewer-athlete dialogues). During the data analysis (coding procedure) the following concepts were identified and described: trajectories and stages of the sports habitus formation, social practices of the athlete’s habitus; a strong connection was noted between these concepts. Reliability of the obtained results is within the acceptable level as the subjective views of the informants are expressed in the indicators typical of their activity, acquired in the process of integration into the sports field over 10 years or more. This resulted in a high sports status (candidate master of sports, master of sports), which was the rationale for their selection for the interview. The paper reveals the peculiarities of the formation of the athletes’ habitus, its trajectory, and formation stages. Depending on the stage of the habitus formation in the sports field, the agent is endowed with transitional sports habitus, which, accumulating, allow the individual to acquire the habitus of the established athlete. The athlete’s habitus synthesizes the diversity of social experiences of agents of various social fields, thereby endowing itself with the identity of the realization of practices characteristic only of the social space of sport. In general, we can define the athlete’s habitus as a system of acquired predispositions that are imposed by the structure of the social field of sport.

Abstract:
This research aims to reveal the doxa generated by the Jakarta Arts Council (DKJ) and its role as the institution with the legitimacy to build cultural construction, especially in the field of literature. This study uses the theory of genetic structuralism or also known as constructivist structuralism by Pierre Felix Bourdieu. This theory departs from the basic concept of the habitus and the arena, agency and structure as the principles that gave birth and developed the habits, producing habitus as well as perspectives. The results shows that the habitus and the perspective place the Jakarta Arts Council as doxa and as a guidelines for cultural practices in art programs, which is rooted on the structure of culture that is constructed through symbolic violence toward the involved agents and is socialized in the field of culture through similarly of symbolic violence.

Abstract:
This article describes a socio-political phenomenon that occurred in Tidore community during the momentum of Local Leaders Election (pilkada). Political phenomena do not only involve rational instruments, but also cultural and supernatural/mystical/occult dimensions being part of a mechanism for power struggle. Values, norms, and traditional leaders (nature and shari'a) are involved in a political contestation. The phenomenon of jinn and mystical/occult power is part of the capital to produce power in Tidore or in another sense; symbolic capital becomes a political mobilization strategy in Tidore. The aims of this research are (1) to analyze power and describe the process of doxa formation and elite habitus/political actors in the symbolic- based power struggle arena in Tidore. (2) to analyze and describe the strategies of the local elite in using symbolic capital in the arena of power struggle in Tidore (Local Leaders Election). This research uses qualitative method with ethnographic research. The research subjects are the indigenous people of Gurabunga, the political elite/political actors, Sowohi, the Sultan and people who are involved and understand the Local Leaders Election (pilkada). Data collection was done by interview, observation and documentation study. The researchers conduct an in-depth study so that the data can be maximal and adequate, and triangulation is carried out. Then this data was analyzed using an ethnographic approach. The theory used as an analytical tool in this research is Perre Bourdieu's Theory of Doxa, Habitus and Arena. The results of the study prove that the process of forming doxa and political habitus has a strong influence on the political practice of the Tidore people. Values, norms, customs and local beliefs of the community have an effect on the dynamics and political reality in Tidore. And symbolic capital as the most important part in producing power in Tidore Keywords: Doxa, Habitus, Symbolic-based Power Struggle

Abstract:
Despite the key commonalities between the affective and the practical turns, affect is still an underexplored aspect in practice theory. Proposing an analytical distinction between the sociological and the ontological levels of analysis, this article looks into schemes of appraisal as they appear in Bourdieusian practice theory, and highlights how beneath the unity of social conditioning, habitus creates fragmentation between embodied and cognitive meaning. Additionally, it provides a limited and often foggy account of emotions and affectivity. To overcome these challenges, it is argued that practice theory needs to rely on a conceptualisation of subjectivity, which allows for a more holistic and affective meaning making. Doing so draws on Wetherell’s affective practice and Ahmed’s Hume-inspired concept of impression, but also on a variant of practice which works with empirical rather than epistemic individuals. A theory of practice infused with affect overcomes not only the mind-body dualism, but also contributes to reducing the tension between structural and agentic poles.

Abstract:
Purpose The paper aims to conceptualise cosmopolitanism drivers from the third-level power perspective by drawing on the Steven Lukes’ (1974; 2005) theory of power. Additionally, the paper aims to investigate the relationship between entrepreneurs’ cosmopolitan dispositions and habitus, i.e. a pattern of an individual’s demeanour, as it was understood by Pierre Bourdieu. Design/methodology/approach This conceptual paper makes use of Bourdieu’s framework (habitus) by extending it to the urban cosmopolitan environment and linking habitus to the three-dimensional theory of power and, importantly, to the power’s third dimension – preference-shaping. Findings Once cosmopolitanism is embedded in the urban area’s values, this creates multiple endless rounds of mutual influence (by power holders onto entrepreneurs via political and business elites and by entrepreneurs onto power holders via the same channels), with mutual benefit. Therefore, mutually beneficial influence that transpires in continuous support of a cosmopolitan city’s environment may be viewed as one of the factors that enhances cosmopolitan cities’ resilience to changes in macroeconomic conditions. Originality/value The paper offers a theoretical model that allows to enrich the understanding of the power–cosmopolitanism–entrepreneurship link by emphasising the preference-shaping capacity of power, which leads to embedding cosmopolitanism in societal values. As a value shared by political and business elites, cosmopolitanism is also actively promoted by entrepreneurs through their disposition and habitus. This ensures not only their willing compliance with power and the environment but also their enhancement of favourable business conditions. Entrepreneurs depart from mere acquiescence (to power and its explicit dominance) to practicing their cosmopolitan influence by active preference-shaping.

Abstract:
The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to analyze the influences of a 4-year university-based coach development curriculum on coaching-students’ habitus. The occupational socialization framework and Bourdieu’s theory of practice were used to capture the socialization factors that influence how coaching habitus remain continuous or are modified across the temporal phases of coaching-students’ socialization (i.e., acculturation and preservice professionalization). Data were collected through interviews, interview reflections, and coaching philosophies, which were analyzed and compared across entering (ENCS; n = 23) and exiting (XCS; n = 10) cohorts. Habitus formation, enacting coaching habitus, and influences on coaching habitus were the main themes. XCS differed from ENCS by utilizing individualized instructional coaching, planning and programming, various methods of coaching, and reflection and lifelong learning as key strategies to enact their habitus, which showed the influence of preservice professionalization on gaining cultural capital in the coaching field. The findings provide support for how practicum cites, course content, and coach developers within the curriculum influenced coaching-students’ habitus. This research offers novel insights in regard to the approaches used in the curriculum, the integration of occupational socialization and Bourdieu’s theory of practice frameworks, and the cross-comparative design for analyzing programmatic effectiveness.

Abstract:
ENGELSKE ABSTRACTS: Vibeke Tornhøj Christensen: Weight and Capital – The Application of Bourdieu’s Concepts of Habitus and Capital in an Analysis of Differentiated Weight Levels among Adults and Children The prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased in the Danish population in the past decades. Considerable research in recent years has shown a correlation between weight and socio-economic characteristics such as education and income. This article seeks to provide an extension to previous research by applying a theoretical perspective using Bourdieu’s theory of practice connecting objective conditions of life with behaviour, preferences and values. The article examines how adult and child weight correlates with economic, cultural and social capital. The results show a clear correlation between weight and capital and demonstrate clear gender-differences. The study is based on Danish survey data from 2007 and uses factor analyses as well as linear and generalized ordered logit regressions for estimations. Key words: Weight, BMI, Bourdieu, capital, gender.
