AbstractA group of 110 gold-tooled bindings, covering mainly incunabula, as well as a few sixteenth-, seventeenth-, and eighteenth-century works, was produced in a bindery in The Hague during the eighteenth century, presumably for one collector. This article describes the detective work which has led to the identification of the owner of these finely bound books as Samuel van Huls, a Hague magistrate and avid collector of books and pictures.

Recently Bacon, Childs and van Dam showed that the ``pretty good measurement'' (PGM) is optimal for the Hidden Subgroup Problem on the dihedral group $D_n$ in the case where the hidden subgroup is chosen uniformly from the $n$ involutions. We show that, for any group and any subgroup $H$, the PGM is the optimal one-register experiment in the case where the hidden subgroup is a uniformly random conjugate of $H$. We go on to show that when $H$ forms a Gel'fand pair with its parent group, the PGM is the optimal measurement for any number of registers. In both cases we bound the probability that the optimal measurement succeeds. This generalizes the case of the dihedral group, and includes a number of other examples of interest.

AbstractMotivated by location-based social networks which allow people to access location-based services as a group, we study a novel variant of optimal sequenced route (OSR) queries, optimal sequenced route for group meetup (OSR-G) queries. OSR-G query aims to find the optimal meeting POI (point of interest) such that the maximum users’ route distance to the meeting POI is minimized after each user visits a number of POIs of specific categories (e.g., gas stations, restaurants, and shopping malls) in a particular order. To process OSR-G queries, we first propose an OSR-Based (OSRB) algorithm as our baseline, which examines every POI in the meeting category and utilizes existing OSR (called E-OSR) algorithm to compute the optimal route for each user to the meeting POI. To address the shortcomings (i.e., requiring to examine every POI in the meeting category) of OSRB, we propose an upper bound based filtering algorithm, called circle filtering (CF) algorithm, which exploits the circle property to filter the unpromising meeting POIs. In addition, we propose a lower bound based pruning (LBP) algorithm, namely LBP-SP which exploits a shortest path lower bound to prune the unqualified meeting POIs to reduce the search space. Furthermore, we develop an approximate algorithm, namely APS, to accelerate OSR-G queries with a good approximation ratio. Finally the experimental results show that both CF and LBP-SP outperform the OSRB algorithm and have high pruning rates. Moreover, the proposed approximate algorithm runs faster than the exact OSR-G algorithms and has a good approximation ratio.

Purpose This paper aims to provide an overview of existing condition, rules and implementation of CSR and create harmony models of corporate social responsibility (CSR) between regulation, Javanese culture values and universal principles, to fill the lack of CSR regulation in Indonesia. Design/methodology/approach This study is based on sociology legal research. The regulations and principles have been studied by using the approach of law and social sciences. That characteristic is descriptive evaluative. The primary data are taken from interview with the senior source relations of PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) in Jakarta, President Director of PT Rosalia Indah Group in Surakarta and Your Honour Prince of Surakarta Hanadiningrat Kingdom. Secondary data are obtained from the review of the literatures pertaining to the material. Secondary data consist of legal materials such as regulations, books, papers and other references. Data analysis technique use theoretical interpretative. Findings CSR is implemented by company only for lifting the image. CSR fund allocation is still a company’s secret, and it becomes evidence of the lack of transparency for companies to manage and provide social cost to society. It can also be found that some companies collect donations from the public for disaster relief, but in the distribution of aid, they use the name of a CSR company. There is polarization in the implementation of CSR. A government- owned company is already bound by the provisions of the Regulation of the Minister of state-owned enterprises. Research limitations/implications This paper discusses the CSR implementation in Indonesia and it creates a model of accountability of CSR to fill the legal vacuum that occurs at this time. This paper formulates a good relation between traditional Javanese value, government regulations and universal CSR principle. Practical implications There remains a mismatch between the Javanese values of philosophy with the positive regulatory norms that result in the implementation of CSR only to meet the requirements of the positive regulatory norm and ignore the obligations involved and to aid the prosperity of the public society. Social implications Communities around a company have not been able to enjoy the advantages of the company. Communities should fight for their own lives without being dependent on or being supported by a company’s existence. Originality/value This research combines the Javanese values with the positive legal regulations in the implementation of CSR in Indonesia. This research has not been conducted by the others. This research will provides benefits on the idea of imposing sanctions on the non-implementation of CSR, not only through positive legal regulations but also through social sanctions embodied in the Javanese values.

An improvement over the information lower bound, via a weak concavity property, is made for the minimum expected number of group tests.

This book is a collection of essays written by a variety of experts on Turkey and social movements and provides a critical analysis of the role of the Gülen Movement (GM)—or Hizmet (“service”), as it is referred to by its adherents—in the coup attempt which was undertaken by one or more factions of the Turkish armed forces in July 2016. Edited and contributed to by M. Hakan Yavuz and Bayram Balci, this work began at a conference in October of 2016, where these experts gathered to discuss the coup itself as well as its implications and ramifications. The chapters in the book all build off of each other to some degree, with earlier chapters covering the history of the GM and the ways in which it has acquired influence both in Turkey and abroad; the coup and structural factors both within Turkish society; and the GM alliance with the Justice and Development Party (AKP) led by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the current president of Turkey. Later chapters expand in scope, covering the foreign policy implications of the coup both for Turkey and the United States, where Fethullah Gülen, the eponymous leader of the movement, resides today. Several chapters engage the state of the scholarship on the GM itself, effectively unpacking the ways in which the organization has actively co-opted academia by offering paid trips to Turkey, publishing non-peer-reviewed material, and funding conferences which avoid critical analysis of the GM. In the introduction Balci and Yavuz discuss the history of the Turkish state, giving particular focus to the place of religion under Kemal Atatürk; the pair discusses how the Turkish concept of secularism hews much more closely to the Jacobin tradition than the Anglo-American understanding. This is quite important as the alliance between the AKP and the GM (following Turkish elections in 2002 wherein the AKP swept to power) rested on a shared desire to overthrow the Kemalist conception of secularism, which seeks to dominate religion and prevent its expression in the public sphere. The book’s first chapter, written by Yavuz, charts the GM’s development over time, enumerating three key stages in its history. The first was that of a loosely bound religious network, encouraged by their leader to do good works; the second marked the expansion of the GM both within and outside of Turkey as an education-providing and media powerhouse; the third saw the GM create a parallel state structure in Turkey, which was mobilized to further increase the movement’s power throughout the 2000s and this current decade, most famously during the coup itself, though a variety of other incidents are discussed here and throughout the book. The next chapter details the coup itself, giving background which is necessary to understand the rest of the work and underlining four key junctures which put Turkey on the path to the July 15th event. The chapter’s author, Mujeeb R. Khan, notes that the structure of Turkish institutions (particularly its version of secularism), the continued domination of the Turkish deep state following the introduction of multi-party elections several decades ago, the neo-liberal opening Turkey experienced in the 1980s, and the rise of the AKP in the early 2000s all played integral roles in the rise of the GM and, eventually, the coup. Yavuz collaborated with Rasim Koç to write the third chapter, which examines the relationship between the GM and Erdoğan’s AKP (beginning with the unspoken alliance between the two which started after AKP’s 2002 electoral victory and whose disintegration led to the coup) as well as foreign policy consequences it had for Turkey. Chapters 4 and 5, written by Michael A. Reynolds and Kiliç Kanat, examine the coup, including the factors and events which led to both its occurrence and its failure. Kanat’s examination of why the coup failed is particularly interesting; he compares and contrasts the failure with previous successful coups which occurred in Turkey during the mid- to late-twentieth century. The next chapter, written by Caroline Tee, returns specifically to the topic of the AKP-GM relationship, digging deeply into the events which caused what on the surface seemed like a natural alliance to fracture and, during 2016, turn upon itself. Sabine Dreher’s chapter follows Tee’s, and is one of the most theoretical in the book, as it places the GM in the contexts of neoliberal and globalist theory, and notes internal contradictions within the movement itself. She considers how the global goals of the organization—the eradication of ignorance through educational work, the alleviation of poverty through private enterprise run by movement members, and the hosting of intercultural and interfaith dialogue— stand at odds with the nationalist project of the GM in Turkey, where movement members attempted to seize control of the state they had been infiltrating for some time as opposed to working outside of it. Balci wrote the eighth chapter, which deals with the GM movement’s presence in former Soviet satellites, namely Georgia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. Following the coup attempt in 2016, the Turkish government pressured all of these states to shut down any GM movement activities within their countries, which was difficult as the GM provided excellent education to the children of elites in these nations. He then charts the differing reactions of the states mentioned above. The ninth chapter, by David Tittensor, turns to the structure of the GM and how secrecy and hierarchy play crucial roles in it, a reality which is often denied by the majority of scholarship—though he and other contributors to the work might dispute the use of the term “scholarship”, or at least qualify it. He does end his chapter with a criticism of the theory that GM members were key leaders of the coup, a conclusion which is at odds with that of most other contributors to the volume. The tenth chapter, by Yavuz Çobanoĝlu, provides insight into the role of women in the GM, criticizing some of Gülen’s writings and detailing the experiences of female students living in GM dormitories in Turkey, an experience that many of the women surveyed found to be repressive. Kristina Dohrn’s contribution outlines the activities and role of the GM movement in Tanzania, which, similar to Balci’s chapter, deals with repercussions of the coup and examines potential paths forward for the GM outside of Turkey. The work’s final chapter, written by Joshua Hendrick, is about how the GM presented itself as a “good” Islam in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, during a period in which the West writ large was searching for a “modern” version of the religion which it could champion in opposition to extremism. He effectively critiques the idea that religion itself can be good or bad, and rightly puts the onus on the actors themselves. The book ends with a postscript which examines the four major theories about how the coup may have come to pass, and comes to the conclusion that GM members were central and sole actors in the coup, which was in all likelihood approved by Gülen himself. This work does an excellent job of unpacking the GM and its various religious and political facets, even for the relatively uninitiated reader, and pushes back strongly against what it identifies as the prevailing anti-Erdoĝan Western narratives about the coup, which try to shift blame away from the GM and onto the shoulders of other actors, including the AKP leader. Particularly interesting is the book’s criticism of GM-sponsored scholarship, which is cited as one of the primary ways in which the GM has ingratiated itself worldwide, as it frames the group as “good” Islam. The work refrains from being speculative but does examine possible futures for the GM, mostly outside of Turkey, as the country’s government has gone to extreme lengths to uproot the movement in its homeland—lengths that the authors do rightly criticize as going too far, if somewhat tepidly at times. The US-Turkey relationship as it relates to the GM issue, specifically hisresidence in the US, is also examined in some depth and leads a student of either Islam in the US or the country’s politics to wonder if the GM has successfully insinuated itself into any institutions here, as it has done in Turkey. The author of this review once believed that Erdoĝan may have permitted or even been behind the coup attempt as a vehicle to consolidate power, but the evidence and arguments presented by the authors of this work have swayed his point of view; the GM was almost certainly responsible for the coup attempt, and it seems likely that Gülen himself gave his blessing to the members of his movement who carried it out. Abstract Let G be a finite group. The real genus ρ(G) is the minimum algebraic genus of any compact bordered Klein surface on which G acts. Here we obtain a good general lower bound for the real genus of the group G. We use the standard representation of G as a quotient of a non-euclidean crystallographic group by a bordered surface group. The lower bound is used to determine the real genus of several infinite families of groups; the lower bound is attained for some of these families. Among the groups considered are the dicyclic groups and some abelian groups. We also obtain a formula for the real genus of the direct product of an elementary abelian 2-group and an “even” dicyclic group. In addition, we calculate the real genus of an abstract family of groups that includes some interesting 3-groups. Finally, we determine the real genus of the direct product of an elementary abelian 2-group and a dihedral group.

This paper deals with the modular irregularity strength of a graph of vertices, a new graph invariant, modified from the well-known irregularity strength, by changing the condition of the vertex-weight set associate to the irregular labeling from distinct positive integer to -the group of integer modulo . Investigating the triangular book graph , we first find the irregularity strength of triangular book graph , which is also the lower bound for the modular irregularity strength, and then construct a modular irregular -labeling. The result shows that triangular book graphs admit a modular irregular labeling and its modular irregularity strength and irregularity strength are equal, except for a small case.

Abstract This book, with its 12 chapters, not only encourages all ecologists to consider free-living nematodes as a model organism in their investigations, but also shows how important it is to study the fundamentals of ecology, for example, the distribution and diversity of a group of organisms as well as the interactions of those organisms with others. Detailed studies of this type will ultimately provide a better understanding of food webs, their role in the respective habitat, and the changes therein caused by human activities. In this context, research during the past 20 years has determined that, in addition to aquatic environments, nematodes are good indicators of sediment and soil quality. This book takes into account much of the recent research on the ecology of freshwater nematodes. It contains many new chapters as well as revisions and updates of the chapters of the 2006 book. The objective was to write a comprehensive yet readable guide for interested biologists, from students to career scientists.

AbstractDuring the strict COVID restrictions in 2020, the ‘Critical Theory, Education and Social Work Reading Group’ based at the University of Sydney met via Zoom to discuss Raewyn Connell’s The good university (2019). The crisis faced by higher education institutions—set against broader social and political crises triggered by the pandemic—was the palpable backdrop for discussions. Drawing on examples offered by pioneering universities and educational reformers around the world, Connell outlines a vision for making universities more engaging and more productive places, driven by social good rather than profit, and helping to build fairer societies.Connell’s book generated a rich stream of reflections and responses, especially from postgraduate students who are in a liminal space in the global higher education industry. They are often both students and precariously employed staff; both visible as sources of income for universities and invisible as its workers; both already within the university system and uncertain if they will remain.In this chapter, three (former) postgraduates of the reading group—Meenakshi Krishnaraj, Ren-Hao Leo Xu, and Pat Norman—engage with Connell on university teaching, research, and professional work, respectively. Each in their own way raises the question: How can we reimagine ‘the good university’?

AbstractThroughout this book we have focused entirely on solving ODEs, without delving deeply into their origins or applications. In the present chapter we shift our attention to modeling with ODEs, by exploring a widely studied class of ODE models that describe the spread of infectious diseases. This group of models serves as a good example of how a complex phenomenon can be modeled using relatively simple systems of ODEs. We will derive these models based on a set of fundamental assumptions and discuss the limitations that arise from these assumptions. Although we consider a single application and a single class of models, the fundamental steps of the modeling process are applicable to a wide range of real-world phenomena.

AbstractGlobal food supply chains, we have been told often in recent years, are in crisis. How much, though, does this language of crisis—as particular, contextual, temporally bound—suffice to describe the conditions of the present? This chapter, and the book it introduces, take the COVID-19 pandemic as a springboard to interrogate a larger set of structural, environmental and political fault lines running through the global food system. In a context in which disruptions to the production, distribution and consumption of food are figured as exceptions to the smooth, just-in-time efficiencies of global supply chains, we examine the pandemic not simply as a particular and acute moment of disruption but rather as a lens on a deeper, longer set of structural processes within which disruption is endemic. At a time when it is more likely to be grasped in terms of speculative investment than as a common good, food offers a vital prism for grappling with the logics by which power circulates in the world. Attending to this constellation of forces calls for attention to supply chains as key mechanisms in the organization of the capitalist food system but also demands that we extend our thinking beyond the bounded linearities of supply chain models.

AbstractIn Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-28561-6_2, we posed questions about the differences in several national curricula, and some of them were related to the definition of multiplication. In Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-28561-6_3, several problematics for defining multiplication were discussed, particularly the unique Japanese definition of multiplication, which is called definition of multiplication by measurement. It can be seen as a kind of definition by a group of groups, if we limit it to whole numbers. In Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-28561-6_4, introduction of multiplication and its extensions in the Japanese curriculum terminology were illustrated to explain how this unique definition is related to further learning. Multiplicand and multiplier are necessary not only for understanding the meaning of multiplication but also for making sense the future learning. The curriculum sequence is established through the extension and integration process in relation to multiplication. In this chapter, two examples of lesson study illustrate how to introduce the definition of multiplication by measurement in a Japanese class. Additionally, how students develop and change their idea of units—that any number can be a unit in multiplication beyond just counting by one—is illustrated by a survey before and after the introduction of multiplication. After the illustration of the Japanese approach, its significance is discussed in comparison with the Chilean curriculum guidebook. Then, the conclusion illustrates the feature of the Japanese approach as being relatively sense making for students who learn mathematics by and for themselves by setting the unit for measurement (McCallum, W. Cancer is a major health problem throughout the world. Androgens like testosterone and dihydrotestosterone are essential for the growth and development of the prostate gland. Androgenic receptors are overexpressed, which promotes the progression of prostate cancer (PC) therefore, androgenic receptors are a key target in the therapy of PC. A non-steroidal antiandrogen drug called enzalutamide (ENZ) is used to treat PC; however, it also causes toxicities such as cardiovascular toxicity, acute myocarditis, hypertension, and seizures. The study's goal is to use a bioisosteric approach to replace the aryl group in the ENZ molecule in order to generate a less toxic analogues with improve pharmacokinetic properties and reduce toxicity. The physicochemical, medicinal, pharmacokinetic, and toxicological characteristics of the designed analogues were calculated using ADMETlab 2.0. Drug likeness (DL) and drug score (DS) of analogues were calculated using OSIRIS property explorer (PEO). The docking analysis of designed ENZ analogues was carried out with the help of AutoDock Vina (ADV). Designed analogues met the requirements for acceptability and followed the Lipinski rule of five. The ADMET profile of designed analogues was found to be optimal to good. However, no hydrogen bond was found in docking interactions between ligands and protein. Based on their QED score, ADMET properties, toxicity score, DL, DS and docking interactions, ligands E6 and E20 may be used for further screening as androgen receptor (AR) antagonists in management of PC.

There are 15% of people over 65 with mental health problems in the general population, 25% in general practice and more than 30% in residential homes. Aging is a universal process that affects every human being on earth at various stages of their life. Physical, hormonal, psychological and social factors important in aging . Aim of study is to evaluate the efficacy of laughter therapy in promoting mental health among the elderly. Objectives of the study: The objectives of the study are: • To assess the level of mental health among old age people • To evaluate the effectiveness of laughter therapy on promotion of mental health among old age people • To find out the association between the post-test level of mental health with their selected demographic variables. Hypothesis • H1: There will be significant difference between the pre-test and post-test level of mental health among old age people. • H2: There will be a significant association between the post-test level of Mental Health with their selected demographic variables. Method: The study design is pre-experimental one group pre-test and after-experimental post-test. Setting is St. Joseph old age home, Coimbatore. Sample size is 50 old age individuals. There are 13 items in Tool-1demography proforma and 28 items in section-B standardised general health questionnaire. The tool is verified the experts . The confidential error of this tool is verified by using the split half technique. The value of this tool is 0.7. The collected data is analysed by both inferential method and descriptive statistical method. Evaluation of the efficacy of laughter therapy is done by using the paired 't' test Results: The pre test results showed that out of 50 respondents, 26 (52%) had good mental health, 24 (48%) had poor mental health, and none (0) had good mental health. The post test result showed that 36 (72%) of respondents had good mental health; 14 (28%) had satisfactory mental health; and none had poor mental health (0) The mean mental health score of the respondents before the intervention was 54 (54.82) and the mean mental health score after the intervention was 84 (84.40). The difference in mental health level was 0.5 (0.5). The post-intervention mental health level was higher than the pre-intervention level, indicating the effectiveness of the laughter therapy. The comparison of pre-intervention and post-intervention old age people' mental health score showed that t = 24.2. The research hypothesis (H1) is accepted and null hypotheses are rejected. The analysis showed a significant relationship between the post-intervention and socio-demographic variables, such as religion and marital status. The obtained value was less that the table value at 0.05 level of significance. So the research hypothesis (H2) is accepted and the null hypothesis is rejected. Interpretation and Conclusion: It can be inferred that the Mental Health level of old age people were poor during the pre-test and was increased after the administration of Laughter therapy. It is found that the Mental Health Level score were considerably more in the post-test itself.

Abstract Black nationalist-minded philosophers believe that Black Americans’ obligation to join in political solidarity follows from the principle that to will an end is to will the necessary means—the end being Black social equality. But some Whites and other non-Blacks also affirm this justice cause (“the Cause”). The argument in this section is that while the practical burdens of politics will fall more heavily on Black Americans, this does not translate into a duty for Blacks as such—a view that is at odds with the nationalist tradition. But this view is aligned with the tradition in affirming that Black Americans have ethically good reasons to support Black politics in unapologetic pursuit of Black social equality. Volunteers, not hostages, are needed. Black political solidarity skeptics are entitled to exercise the freedom to go their own way (without doing positive harm to the group).

This book examines what nature, ethics, and reproduction mean to the people of Spey Bay, a coastal village in northeast Scotland. Drawing on an ethnographic research undertaken by the author beginning in late 2005, plus various follow-up trips, the book explores what a group of middle-class people making “good” lives in Spey Bay think about reproduction and assisted reproductive technologies in a time characterized by the rise of biotechnology, fear of environmental crisis, explicit attention to ethics, and intense public scrutiny of reproduction, parenting, and kinship. This introduction provides an overview of bioethics, an academic discipline that has been closely associated with questions about reproduction, and some of the main themes of the book. It also maps the context of Spey Bay by describing the place and the feeling of being there and outlining some of the issues that preoccupy its inhabitants.

Although this was an evening in 1990 I can still remember (nine years on) how passionately we argued for and against the book.Another group has fond memories of its discussion of William Dalrymple’s In Xanadu,also from nine years previously. What makes for a good discussion? Some groups seem to fire on all cylinders on every occasion, and we were taken to task for asking them to name a book which went well:

Abstract CAD systems that make suggestions to designers are investigated as an aid to preliminary design and computational tool for concurrent engineering. A system-user test was performed with such a system configured to provide suggestions in three ways: during preliminary design, after preliminary design, and not at all. Five users were tested with each mode. All were given the same design assignment, and all were allowed to refer to the standard book-form concurrent engineering information. The two user groups that received suggestions produced more good designs than did the unaided group. There was little distinction in quality, however, between the two aided groups. Additionally, users that received suggestions stopped using the book-form information very early in the design process and relied solely on the system’s assistance. These results demonstrate that suggestion-making systems can integrate concurrent engineering information into the preliminary design process.

The article is devoted to the problem of introducing the subject “Literary reading in the native language (Russian)”, including the formation of reading literacy among younger students, and interest in reading based on project activities. The features of the organization of research projects based on a comparison of Russian folk tales and cartoons created based on their motives are considered. As an example, the work on a project on the theme “Baba Yaga: good or evil?”, During which students performed tasks in accordance with the characteristics of their group: moviegoers, book lovers, sages, artists, is shown.

Article C-6000 of Appendix C of ASME Section XI includes Z-factor load multipliers for straight pipes with circumferential flaws. Application of this article is limited to straight pipes with nominal pipe size (NPS) larger than 4 and materials with fracture toughness JIc higher than 105 kJ/m2. Section XI of the ASME B&PV Code does not provide Z-factors for pipes with axial flaws, even for pipes with NPS≥4. Feeders are small diameter pipes (NPS≤2.5) used in a primary heat transport system in the CANDU nuclear reactors. Developments of Z-factor load multipliers for warm-bent feeder bends with axial flaws under pressure are presented in this paper. An empirical approach was adopted using experimental results from the Feeder Bend Testing Program founded by the CANDU Owners Group. The elastic-plastic fracture mechanics stress has been defined by failure stress from the experiments. Limit load solutions for elbow/bends recently published by Kim et al. were discussed. Additionally, lower bound limit load simulations were performed using finite element models implemented for ANSYS. The results from straight pipe models exhibited good correlation with analytical solution. Numerical simulations for elbows/bends showed analogous trends for limit load of elbow/bends with axial cracks as reported by Kim et al.

The EAGLE project was a Euratom FP7 which helped to identify and disseminate good practices in information and communication processes related to ionizing radiation. For this purpose, the consortium reviewed national and international data, tools and methods as well as institutional work in order to identify education, information and communication needs. Generally in high school the first concepts on radioactivity and ionizing radiation (IR) are introduced mainly in the subjects of physics or physical chemistry. There are a number of concepts in relation with IR and nuclear topics, and different ways to teach them: theoretical, mathematical, historical or practical. The question also rose, to what extend the various topics related to ionizing radiation (health, environment, history) are dealt with. As already mentioned, all these questions let to the idea to compare the content dealing with radioactivity and nuclear topics in different physics school books and more specifically schoolbooks for high school students (in the age 17 to 18). The method was as follows: - For the review the different partners of EAGLE have sent the schoolbooks used for the target group, or scanned documents. - Spanish schoolbooks and English schoolbooks were purchased to extend the review to other EU countries. - IRSN works in partnership with a high school based in the French town Vichy. - Each book was analyzed in detail to list with precision the content. A matrix helped to compare them. The paper presents the comparison of the contents of these books and their analysis. Some recommendations coming from the Eagle project will be discussed.

Ours is an age of pervasive political turbulence, and the scale of the challenge requires new thinking on politics as well as public ethics for our world. In Western countries, the specter of Islamophobia, alt-right populism, along with racialized violence has shaken public confidence in long-secure assumptions rooted in democracy, diversity, and citizenship. The tragic denouement of so many of the Arab uprisings together with the ascendance of apocalyptic extremists like Daesh and Boko Haram have caused an even greater sense of alarm in large parts of the Muslim-majority world. It is against this backdrop that M.A. Muqtedar Khan has written a book of breathtaking range and ethical beauty. The author explores the history and sociology of the Muslim world, both classic and contemporary. He does so, however, not merely to chronicle the phases of its development, but to explore just why the message of compassion, mercy, and ethical beauty so prominent in the Quran and Sunna of the Prophet came over time to be displaced by a narrow legalism that emphasized jurisprudence, punishment, and social control. In the modern era, Western Orientalists and Islamists alike have pushed the juridification and interpretive reification of Islamic ethical traditions even further. Each group has asserted that the essence of Islam lies in jurisprudence (fiqh), and both have tended to imagine this legal heritage on the model of Western positive law, according to which law is authorized, codified, and enforced by a leviathan state. “Reification of Shariah and equating of Islam and Shariah has a rather emaciating effect on Islam,” Khan rightly argues. It leads its proponents to overlook “the depth and heights of Islamic faith, mysticism, philosophy or even emotions such as divine love (Muhabba)” (13). As the sociologist of Islamic law, Sami Zubaida, has similarly observed, in all these developments one sees evidence, not of a traditionalist reassertion of Muslim values, but a “triumph of Western models” of religion and state (Zubaida 2003:135). To counteract these impoverishing trends, Khan presents a far-reaching analysis that “seeks to move away from the now failed vision of Islamic states without demanding radical secularization” (2). He does so by positioning himself squarely within the ethical and mystical legacy of the Qur’an and traditions of the Prophet. As the book’s title makes clear, the key to this effort of religious recovery is “the cosmology of Ihsan and the worldview of Al-Tasawwuf, the science of Islamic mysticism” (1-2). For Islamist activists whose models of Islam have more to do with contemporary identity politics than a deep reading of Islamic traditions, Khan’s foregrounding of Ihsan may seem unfamiliar or baffling. But one of the many achievements of this book is the skill with which it plumbs the depth of scripture, classical commentaries, and tasawwuf practices to recover and confirm the ethic that lies at their heart. “The Quran promises that God is with those who do beautiful things,” the author reminds us (Khan 2019:1). The concept of Ihsan appears 191 times in 175 verses in the Quran (110). The concept is given its richest elaboration, Khan explains, in the famous hadith of the Angel Gabriel. This tradition recounts that when Gabriel appeared before the Prophet he asked, “What is Ihsan?” Both Gabriel’s question and the Prophet’s response make clear that Ihsan is an ideal at the center of the Qur’an and Sunna of the Prophet, and that it enjoins “perfection, goodness, to better, to do beautiful things and to do righteous deeds” (3). It is this cosmological ethic that Khan argues must be restored and implemented “to develop a political philosophy … that emphasizes love over law” (2). In its expansive exploration of Islamic ethics and civilization, Khan’s Islam and Good Governance will remind some readers of the late Shahab Ahmed’s remarkable book, What is Islam? The Importance of Being Islamic (Ahmed 2016). Both are works of impressive range and spiritual depth. But whereas Ahmed stood in the humanities wing of Islamic studies, Khan is an intellectual polymath who moves easily across the Islamic sciences, social theory, and comparative politics. He brings the full weight of his effort to conclusion with policy recommendations for how “to combine Sufism with political theory” (6), and to do so in a way that recommends specific “Islamic principles that encourage good governance, and politics in pursuit of goodness” (8).
