This project explores the potential of gardens as specific physical places where humans cultivate vegetation. Humans are increasingly separated from natural systems, particularly vegetation, in their daily lives. Such a disconnect results in a failure to build emotional ties to and deep care for the natural world. To address this disconnect, landscape architects and planting designers need to understand how to design public gardens as ambiguous landscapes, landscapes that refer to natural ecosystems while also clearly revealing the human role in their design and care. Design choices involve environmental components and their articulation. Designers currently lack a vocabulary to identify the components of transformative experiences between people and plants. They also lack a visual understanding of how relationships between components can be articulated to establish ambiguity in specific sites. Synthesis of literature in experiential learning, dynamic vegetation, and planting design establishes a vocabulary of component cues to set up conditions for transformative experience in public gardens. Critical drawing of ambiguous landscapes by contemporary planting designers augments the researcher’s understanding of experiential cues. In order to explore the potential formal impact of designing for ambiguity throughout the design process, this project’s design application spans two sites: Chapman Botanical Garden in Apalachicola, Florida, and the Meadow on the Kansas State University campus, Manhattan, Kansas. Designing Chapman Botanical Garden offers the potential to be involved with the conceptual phases of site design: site planning, programming, and planting design. Designing at the Meadow offers the opportunity to be involved in the implementation phase of design: stakeholder involvement, selection and growing of plants, and design interpretation. Together, the two planting design explorations represent a complete design process for transformative experience.

Cultural landscape can be defined as landscapes derived from anthropogenic activities, with which people establish cosmological, sacred, historical relationship and many activities types. From these interactions emerges modified landscapes and local knowledge according to the needs of each human group, and research on these aspects help to understand about the historical use of these landscapes and make predictions aiming its conservation. Thus, this study sought to understand what criteria people use to classify landscapes, understanding the effects of anthropogenic landscapes in the management of FLONA-Araripe from biological evidence and perceptions of the surrounding communities and employees as well as checking as variables interfered with local knowledge about these landscapes. For this we used semi-structured interviews with 106 people living around the FLONA-Araripe, with seven employees of the conservation unit, plus a list-free landscapes and species of useful plants known, the community mapping and history graph. Biological evidence was accessed through floristic survey, soil analysis and aerial imagery of the managed areas in two temporal clippings. The main results of this study, was observed that the studied population establishes close relationships with the landscape, as they classify for utility issues and these designations indicate on your management process, as was evidenced in biological data. Moreover, it was observed that the anthropogenic effects on the landscapes of FLONA-Araripe, the votes favored plant species in the past tense, and currently the abundance of these species is in decline due to specific environmental and anthropogenic factors. Finally, employee perceptions about the occurrence of fires in managed areas, revealed the historical use and conflicts of interest in the conservation of these areas among the local population and the managers of the Unit. Thus, theoretical view point these results elucidate issues related to the classification of landscape processes, since it was found that these occur by utilitarian issues, and contribute to understanding the effects of management on current landscapes, seen that demystifies the idea of unspoiled forests, showing that FLONA-Araripe consists of a set of human altered landscapes and human activities can both contribute to the increase in the abundance of useful species, as the depletion of this species. From a practical view point, our results delineate future perspectives on forest landscape that will assist both the management of protected area, as local cultures that depend on the use of forest resources.

Full textThis dissertation is structured to mimic or represent my design project, which was developed in conjunction with theoretical readings and research. The aim is to provide a comprehensive representation of the project’s development from theoretical beginnings to architectural detail. This dissertation attempts to uncover, explore and understand the fragile relationship between man, nature and architecture, stemming from a deeply personal interest in the rehabilitation of political wastelands through ecological restoration. The aim of this study is to pursue a holistic design approach, which understands the architectural discipline as an interrelated profession in which buildings cannot be designed in isolation. Broken down into three main parts, this document illustrates the development of my theoretical and contextual interests into design. These papers are presented in their entirety of this document as Part A (starting point and research influence), Part B (process and discovery) and Part C which introduces a narrative program developed for the architectural discovery of K-206 (nestled within ‘jungle’ in Alexandra). A series of abstract drawings and model building experiments initially framed the investigation, allowing for chance, exploration and the unexpected, valuable experiments in the development of an architectural language and vocabulary which were refined over the course of the year

On the advertisements of daily newspaper, magazines and websites, it is often to find that high greening and views from the environment and landscape within the residential areas proposed by real estate companies. High quality collective mansions usually are equipped with conditions, including: low site coverage ratio, low floor area ratio, low building density and high greening coverage ratio, which are named “three lows and one high” characteristics. From the perspectives of architural development and residential demands, they are looking for both higher efficiency uses of resources and meanwhile more friendly treatment toward the environment. Therefore, the policy of “yield green to the residential community” only for residents within the community to enjoy is the mainstream idea in Taichung City. The motivation of this study was focused on the best efficacy of real estate developers and consumers to reach both price and values maximization from the viewpoint of the importance of botanical greening and landscape to the high quality collective mansions. The purpose of this study was to explore the influences of botanical greening landscape on the prices of the high quality collective mansions and to provide the values of references for real estate investors, housing consumers as well as researchers of this concern. In terms of study methodology, literature of the effects of botanical green landscape on housing prices and relevant issues was reviewed to assure the study framework. By considering that general housing consumers and first time housing buyers may not be easy to understand this study topic, experts such as: bosses of building companies, real estate dealers, brokers, agents and realestate praisers, were interviewed to gather the data for the base of the study analyses. The findings of this study included: (1) the opinions of both experts and consumers in their eyes were quite similar towards the study topic, yet a few differences were still remained; (2) consumers in experts’ eyes were quite similar in their behaviors of greening landscape housing purchasing decisions analysis but the policy factor was less affected; (3) the characteristics of the high quality mansions need to be considered not only unit price, numbers of area units and total price of the housing unit, but also nearby environment and living environment within the mansions; and (4) the analyses of both the good and the bad influences of the botanical greening landscape on housings prices were presented. According to the study results, some suggestions were presented for the references of real estate developers, investors, land owners, housing buyers as well as following researchers for the concerns of how botanical greening landscape affect the housing prices in high quality collective mansions.
