Abstract:
Objective In this study, we aimed to assess the epidemiological profile and associated risk factors of malaria in Boset District using clinical records from the Boset District Health Office Central Surveillance Unit, East Shawa Zone, Oromia, Ethiopia. Methods This health facility-based retrospective cross-sectional study included clinical malaria data for 5 years (2016–2020) recorded at all public and private health facilities in the district. Results The present study revealed an overall malaria slide positivity rate of 12.4% (21,059/169,986), ranging from 23.3% to 5.3% during 2016–2020 in Boset District. Malaria cases were recorded in all age groups, but individuals aged 15 years and above accounted for a higher (56.2%) average proportion of malaria cases. Concerning the relative proportion of malaria parasite species, Plasmodium falciparum was slightly predominant (58%) over P. vivax (42%). Conclusion The present study revealed a declining trend in malaria cases over the 5-year study period in Boset District. Scaling up the available malaria prevention strategies and control measures is recommended to achieve malaria pre-elimination.

Abstract:
This study was conducted on a total of 776 goats (part of Central highland goat breeds of Ethiopia), 306 from Boset district of Oromia region and 470 were from Minjar Shenkora district of Amhara region. A format developed by using food and agriculture organization discerption list was used for recording of morphological traits, bodyweight and linear body measurements. Both qualitative and quantitative traits were recorded from randomly sampled mature goats and the data were analyzed using SAS software. The goat type in the study area was characterized by a higher proportion of plain coat color patterns (62.5). Ingeneral, the majority (98.4%) of the studied goats were horned and characterized by backward orientation (67%) with a straight shape (49.3%). They presented a concave facial profile (73.8%), slop up toward the rump back profile (66.2%), no wattle (99.6%), no toggle (90.7%), no ruff (85.9%) and no beard (57.3%). The location had a significant effect on body weight and some other linear body measurements. Traits like body length, rump length, horn length, head length, head width and shin circumference were significantly higher in Boset district. In contrast, rump width and cannon bone length were significantly lower. The mean body weight of male goats in Boset and Minjar Shenkora district were 30.5±1.05 kg with a range of 16 to 47 and 27.5±0.56 with a range of 13 to 57, respectively. While for female counterpart mean body weights (kg) were 28.4±0.35 with a range of 17 to 45 for Boset and 27.5±0.33 with a range 15 to 57 for Minjar Shenkora district. Heart girth had the highest correlation with body weight in both sexes and shoulder width in Boset male goats. The wider variation in most quantitative measurement traits would open an opportunity for further improvement, conservation and utilization work.

Abstract:
The study was conducted on a total of 144 randomly selected households of goat keepers from Boset district of Oromia region and Minjar Shenkora district of Amhara region. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect both qualitative data, and the data were organized and analyzed by using SPSS, version 23. The main purposes of keeping goats in the study area were mainly for cash income and meat production with an index of 0.37 and 0.23 in Boset and 0.44 and 0.23 in Minjar Shenkora district respectively. The fast growth rate, body size, and coat color of the animal were ranked as major selection criteria for breeding buck across the study area. Body condition score was considered as the first reason to cull breeding male (0.35) and female (0.31) in Boset district. Whereas, poor fertility and growth stand first as culling criteria for breeding females and males in Minjar Shenkora with an index of 0.37 and 0.32 respectively. Predator (with an index of 0.32) and shortage of grazing lands with an index of 0.28) were the major constraints of goat production in Boset and Minjar Shenkora districts. Therefore, any conservation and improvement program strategy that is intended to be implemented in the study area should consider the practical variation of the existed system, and the interest of the farmer

Abstract:
Background. Avian tuberculosis is a zoonotic disease which remains a problem in extensive poultry production systems under which chickens scavenge for survival in unhygienic environments. Methodology. A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2016 to June 2017 at high-land areas of Gerar Jarso and Ada’a and Boset districts located at mid and low altitudes of Oromia, Ethiopia, respectively, to assess the perception of farmers on the occurrence of avian tuberculosis in chickens and its public health implications using a semistructured questionnaire. Result. The study evidenced poor awareness of the farmers, as only 11% (10/91) of them had well-perceived occurrence of the disease in chickens and its risk of zoonosis. Conclusion. Hence, it revealed that there is poor public perception on the occurrence as well as public health implications of avian tuberculosis, demanding further studies for verification and technical interventions.

Abstract:
Renewable energy technologies are the best option for rural peoples until hydroelectric power is well disseminated in the country of Ethiopia where critical energy access and supply problems exist with a poorly ventilated cooking places. The current study examined the factors determining households’ decision to adopt renewable energy technologies and energy source choices in Boset District. A two-stage stratified random sampling was employed to draw a sample of 210 respondents. Binary logit model has revealed that age, family size, education, income, number of livestock owned, landholding size, and training were significant to adopt technologies. On the other hand, multinomial model has indicated that age, family size, landholding size, income, livestock ownership, education, and training have significant role in the modern and mixed energy choices vis-à-vis traditional energy. The study has suggested that continued training and education are required to enhance households’ awareness concerning renewable energy sources.

Abstract:
This study assessed farmers’ perceptions of the outcomes of the Campaign-Based Watershed Management (CBWM) program in Ethiopia, and how this influences their willingness to participate in the program. Key informant interviews, a household survey, and the Google Earth Engine were used to collect and analyze the relevant data. Results show that farmers’ perceived outcomes of the CBWM program hardly motivated them to participate in the program. Particularly, farmers were not motivated by the physical effects of the program, because of the limited direct benefits to individual households, and destruction of previously developed micro-watersheds by frequent runoff and human and animal disturbances. Similarly, farmers were not motivated by the economic effects of the program, because of the limitations/absence of benefit-sharing mechanisms and resultant conflicts among farmers. The only motivating outcome of the program concerned its effect on personal capacities, which was particularly appreciated in localities that were vulnerable to erosion. The results of the study suggest the need to (1) better integrate actions at watershed level to come to effective water runoff control, (2) enhance the participation of all local actors to come to more effective area closure initiatives with transparent benefit-sharing mechanisms, and (3) give much more emphasis to capacity building as a cross-cutting component in the program. Hence, in order to enhance the willingness of farmers to genuinely participate in the CBWM, the program should adopt a more participatory and integrated approach.

Roberts, Brad. "On bosets and fundamental semigroups." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/2183.

Full text
Abstract:
The term boset was coined by Patrick Jordan, both as an abbreviation of biordered set, and as a generalisation of poset, itself an abbreviation of partially ordered set. A boset is a set equipped with a partial multiplication and two intertwining reflexive and transitive arrow relations which satisfy certain axioms. When the arrow relations coincide the boset becomes a poset. Bosets were invented by Nambooripad (in the 1970s) who developed his own version of the theory of fundamental regular semigroups, including the classical theory of fundamental inverse semigroups using semilattices, due to Munn (in the 1960s). A semigroup is fundamental if it cannot be shrunk homomorphically without collapsing its skeleton of idempotents, which is a boset. Nambooripad constructed the maximum fundamental regular semigroup with a given boset of idempotents. Fundamental semigroups and bosets are natural candidates for basic building blocks in semigroup theory because every semigroup is a coextension of a fundamental semigroup in which the boset of idempotents is undisturbed. Recently Jordan reproved Nambooripad's results using a new construction based on arbitrary bosets. In this thesis we prove that this construction is always fundamental, which was previously known only for regular bosets, and also that it possesses a certain maximality property with respect to semigroups which are generated by regular elements. For nonregular bosets this constuction may be regular or nonregular. We introduce a class of bosets, called sawtooth bosets, which contain many regular and nonregular examples, and correct a criterion of Jordan's for the regularity of this construction for sawtooth bosets with two teeth. We also introduce a subclass, called cyclic sawtooth bosets, also containing many regular and nonregular examples, for which the construction is always regular.

Abstract:
The primary goal of this thesis is to find the distribution function of number of particles imbalance for ultra cold bosons trapped in a double well potential elongated in one direction for different strength of interaction between particles. This distribution function has been found to be Gaussian distribution function in two different limits. The first limit is weak interaction limit, where we only consider one energy level per well that is called "two mode approximation" regime. The second limit is when the interaction energy is in the same order as gap between energy levels where in this case, we consider finite number of levels per well. The standard deviation of number of particles distribution also has been found in both limits to be proportional to the square root of the total number of particles. In addition, some numerical work is done to find these distribution functions and the results are in agreement with analytical results.

Abstract:
The HIFRENSA settlement is a residential complex built to accommodate workers of Vandellòs-I nuclear power plant. It also has a number of facilities at neighbourhood scale. The set is connected by pedestrian crossings with public squares and road scheme in cul-de-sac. In 1967 Antonio Bonet was commissioned to build the settlement, the administrative offices and other technical buildings on nuclear power plant site . The thesis exposes Bonet as architect researcher. At HIFRENSA settlement, a clear line between architecture and urbanism cannot be drawn. Bonet searches an universal solution. with a type or pattern definition as an element liable to be improved, refined, systematized and prefabricated. The pattern can mutate either to accommodate a construction system or for another needs, topographic, climatic or programmatic. Particularly in Bonet’s work, also to meet a higher requirement: its urban planning support. The greatest difficulty lies on the definition of an order judgment that can give a higher shape to the units, dwellings or facilities , with the intention of avoiding a monotonous urban complex and lack of identity.

Abstract:
It is known that the Catalan architect Antonio Bonet Castellana is recognized for his masterpiece work in the Uruguayan coast, which include the Punta Ballena settlement and a set of houses – of great importance to the Modern Architecture in South America. Nonetheless, this text assumes that Bonet’s contribution on modern urbanism cannot be fully understood only through such work and aims to complement that statement. Thus, instead of the built Punta Ballena it is the unbuilt city in Buenos Aires, Argentina, that this text intends to investigate. Therefore, this dissertation analyzes the unbuilt projects of Casa Amarilla housing (1943), Bajo Belgrano neighborhood (1948-49) and Barrio Sur quarter (1956), conceived for the city of Buenos Aires, recognizing them as a series. It is intended to investigate Bonet’s design and his contribution to the modern city project, including its solutions of collective housing. It is also an intention to understand the relationship between the city planned by Bonet and the existing one, collaborating on a more detailed study about the city of the Modern Architecture.

Abstract:
This paper presents a comparative analysis of selected urban proposals of the architect Antonio Bonet, through two contrasting pieces covering a time span of thirty years (1945-1975). The opposition includes two stages, two landscapes and two different scales, the stage in Argentina-Uruguay and the Spanish stage, the Atlantic forest and the Mediterranean forest, are: the urbanization of Punta Ballena, Maldonado, Uruguay (1945-48) and the HIFRENSA Settlement, L'Hospitalet de l'Infant, Tarragona, Spain (1967-1975). The analysis focuses on two aspects: road layout and landscape. Bonet's work with Sert, unlike other Spanish architects of his generation, is characterized by having a solid theoretical foundation. Bonet assists, with only 20 years, the CIAM IV, Athens (1933), was a student member of GATCPAC and worked with Sert, Torres-Clavé and Le Corbusier. In 1949, assists the CIAM VII in Bérgamo as Uruguayan-Argentine delegate. In the selected works, in general, cannot establish a clear line separating architecture and urbanism.

Abstract:
In the work of Antonio Bonet highlights his euphoric attitude about the utopia of the new architecture. Stripped of prejudice is facing one of the specific events of his time, will be the boom of mass tourism. Throughout his work, Bonet will face virgin territories. Since colonization of Punta Ballena in Uruguay in 1945, through the project spa town of Necochea-Quequén in 1952 in Argentina, the development project of the Manga del Mar Menor in 1961 in Murcia, Andalucía New in 1962 in Marbella and Aiguagelida in 1965 in Girona. Leisure became a problem to which modern urban planning should provide an answer. The return to nature and the outdoors, the sun, sea and sand, became the new habits of leisure.

Abstract:
Wannier excitons in a GaAs quantum well planar microcavity strongly couple with a single-mode photon field and form "microcavity exciton-polaritons". This quasi-particle has a bosomic character when the inter-particle scattering is negligible. Compared to GaAs bare excitons, exciton-polaritons have much lighter mass (by four orders of magnitude) and thus the thermal de Broglie wavelength of GaAs exciton-polaritons is 100 times longer than that of GaAs bare excitons at the same temperature. Therefore, the quantum statistical effect should emerge at a relatively low density.

Abstract:
As was shown by Einstein in 1924, Bose-Einstein statistics gives rise to a phase transition in which a macroscopic part of a gaseous state condenses into a phase with ground state properties, offering a unique view on the behavior of matter at zero temperature. From the very start the nature of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) has provoked statements concerning its relation with respect to superconductivity in electron gases (Einstein 1925) and the superfluidity of liquid helium (London 1938), but this connection is not easily grasped experimentally. Remarkably, although the concept of BEC appears routinely in very different contexts, ranging from excitons in semiconductors to nuclear matter, it had never been observed in its pure form, i.e., in a gaseous phase, until in 1995 BEC in ultracold Rb vapor was reported by Cornell and Wieman. Bose-Einstein condensation is probably the most exciting phenomenon currently under experimental investigation in ultracold atomic gases. In the tutorial the physics will be addressed which is at the roots of the current interest of BEC in atomic gases.

Abstract:
The observation of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in dilute atomic gases was the realization of many long-standing goals: (1) to cool neutral atoms into the ground state of the system, thus exerting ultimate control over the motion and position of atoms limited only by Heisenberg's uncertainty relation; (2) to generate a coherent sample of atoms all occupying the same quantum state (this was subsequently used to realize an atom laser, a device which generates coherent matter waves); and (3) to create a quantum fluid with properties quite different from the quantum liquids He-3 and He-4. This provides a test-ground for many-body theories of the dilute Bose gas which were developed many decades ago, but never tested experimentally.

Abstract:
The first experimental verification of the Tersoff-Bayer interstatistics transition theory has been reported.1-3 A novel difference photon-counting method of detection, which reveals the field's particle fluctuations, is used to gain information on the beam splitting process of a highly Bose degenerate chaotic (and coherent) photon beam emitted from an ultrastable He-Ne laser. The splitting device consists of an electrooptic Pockels cell which acts as a stationary beam splitter or a chaotic beam splitter depending on the output properties of a driving noise generator. We found that the quantum Bose statistics in a splitting (i.e., scattering) process corresponds to a fully stochastic splitting process. This conclusion has been experimentally verified for two-way splitting and for general multichannel scattering induced by microscopic particles.
