Abstract:
Borya mirabilis Churchill (Boryaceae, Asparagales) is a herbaceous perennial and one of Australia’s most endangered plants. Only one population of four colonies remains, on a rock ledge in the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park in Victoria, Australia. The reasons why B. mirabilis flowers freely but does not set seed were investigated. Borya mirabilis had a greater proportion of floral abnormalities than other, fertile Borya species. The pollen was often mis-shapen, with ≤ 1% pollen tube formation, but the ovules showed no structural dissimilarity from other, fertile Borya species. The flowers offered a nectar reward and many insects visited the pollen-bearing flowers in the field. Artificial cross-pollination resulted in the first recorded seed for this species. Borya mirabilis has ~66 chromosomes, relative to the diploid number of ~26 in Borya constricta Churchill, strongly suggesting that B. mirabilis is polyploid. Only 4–7% genetic diversity was found within the remaining B. mirabilis field population using 25/60 RAPD primers that showed heterogeneity. An ex-situ nursery collection was found not to contain all genotypes. Recommendations for the conservation of B. mirabilis include capturing all the known genetic diversity in cloned plants in preference over further attempts to produce seed.

Abstract:
The Grampians pincushion lily (Borya mirabilis Churchill) is a resurrection plant confined to one population at a single rock outcrop in western Victoria. It is a taxonomically well-defined species and geographically widely separated from its most closely related congeners in the south-west of Western Australia. Monitoring over a 12-month period showed a significant decline in population condition that was associated with soil disturbance and damage to associated vegetation. Although able to reproduce vegetatively, B. mirabilis is not known to produce viable seed. Molecular work revealed that all plants in the population were likely to be genetically identical. Investigation of the breeding system showed that pollen viability was low and pollen tube growth was possibly insufficient to fertilise ovules. One explanation for lack of effective sexual reproduction is the presence of a mechanism for self-incompatibility. The decline in population condition and lack of ramet establishment at present are predominantly a result of high levels of ground disturbance from pest animals. Without active and immediate site management the population is likely to become extinct under current circumstances.

Abstract:
Seven rare, vulnerable or endangered plant species endemic to the Grampians Ranges (Gariwerd) in Victoria were tested for their susceptibility to Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands. Existing habitats were checked for infestations of P. cinnamomi. Plants were grown from cuttings collected either from nurseries or from the Grampians National Park. Symptoms on inoculated plants and measurements of shoot growth and vigour were recorded weekly. Dry biomass was recorded at the end of the experiment and the pathogen was re-isolated from inoculated plants to confirm disease aetiology. Results from pot trials were correlated with the results from extensive field surveys for each species in its habitat to assess the risk posed by P. cinnamomi to each species' existence in the wild. The pot trials and field observations revealed that the risk of extinction from infection caused by P. cinnamomi was high for Pimelea pagophila and Pultenaea subalpina (both highly susceptible and inhabiting infested sites) as well as for Asterolasia phebalioides seedlings and Borya mirabilis (both moderately susceptible and inhabiting infested sites). The risk from P. cinnamomi was medium for Sphaerolobium acanthos (susceptible) and low for Grevillea microstegia (slightly susceptible). Hibbertia humifusa subsp. humifusa (field resistant) was not at risk. Measures to protect the susceptible species have been investigated and are discussed.

Abstract:
The aim of the article is to reveal the plots, methods and images Soviet propaganda used when addressing young readers in the representing of the concept “space” in children's magazines of the late 1950s–1960s. The author gives her definition of the term “space”, which up to now has not been clearly conceptualized. Thus, “space” is a figurative-meaningful construct with semantic and symbolic content, visualized using typical cosmic attributes. The key resources for the article are Soviet magazines Murzilkaand Vesyolye Kartinki for children from five to twelve years old. The main content of these magazines is color illustrations, short poems and stories. Looking through children’s magazines, the author first looked for visual markers of “space”: rockets, cosmonaut, spacesuit, moon, stars, etc. If they were absent, she carefully examined the meaning of the textual content of the page, if any. As a result, the text and visual materials were included in the total sample for analysis. The author systematized the materials based on the three grounds of the topic of space: storylines and heroes, methods of representation, visualization. There are three main characters most often found in children’s magazines: a child, the Moon, space. The plots around these characters have two main lines: (1) every Soviet child dreams of becoming a cosmonaut, but for this, s/he needs to study well and be hardworking; (2) only such a great country as the USSR could achieve success in conquering space. The most common way of representing “space” was color pictures and illustrations (cosmonauts at the May Day demonstration, a rocket is approaching the moon, etc.). Poems, riddles, fairy tales or short stories about space was the second popular way. Science notes about how a rocket takes off, how a cosmonaut feels in zero gravity, etc. were published. In addition, game formats were offered for children – to glue a rocket out of paper or draw a suit for a cosmonaut, etc. Children sent their own drawings about space to the magazines. Most often, the image of a rocket was used in space visualization. Portraits of cosmonauts (Gagarin, Titov, and Tereshkova) were also often used. The following conclusion has been made. Visual images, forms and ways of presenting “space” to children in the magazines Murzilka and Vesyolye Kartinki shows that “space” has become a successful ideological construct that reflects the basic principles in accordance with which the educational model was built in the USSR. Children’s magazines tried to develop in children such qualities as love for their country, unconditional faith in its successes and achievements, desire for good studies and hard work.

Abstract:
The majority of flowering-plant species can survive complete air-dryness in their seed and/or pollen. Relatively few species (‘resurrection plants’) express this desiccation tolerance in their foliage. Knowledge of the regulation of desiccation tolerance in resurrection plant foliage is reviewed. Elucidation of the regulatory mechanism in resurrection grasses may lead to identification of genes that can improve stress tolerance and yield of major crop species. Well-hydrated leaves of resurrection plants are desiccation-sensitive and the leaves become desiccation tolerant as they are drying. Such drought-induction of desiccation tolerance involves changes in gene-expression causing extensive changes in the complement of proteins and the transition to a highly-stable quiescent state lasting months to years. These changes in gene-expression are regulated by several interacting phytohormones, of which drought-induced abscisic acid (ABA) is particularly important in some species. Treatment with only ABA induces desiccation tolerance in vegetative tissue of Borya constricta Churchill. and Craterostigma plantagineum Hochstetter. but not in the resurrection grass Sporobolus stapfianus Gandoger. Suppression of drought-induced senescence is also important for survival of drying. Further research is needed on the triggering of the induction of desiccation tolerance, on the transition between phases of protein synthesis and on the role of the phytohormone, strigolactone and other potential xylem-messengers during drying and rehydration.

Abstract:
AbstractThe species from Cladonia section Unciales are characterized by the absence of squamules and soredia on the corticate podetia and the presence of usnic acid. Different subspecies, varieties and forms have been distinguished in the type species C. uncialis. In this study, a molecular phylogeny of Cladonia uncialis and members of the traditionally recognized section Unciales, along with additional potentially allied species, was constructed. DNA sequences from three gene loci, namely ITS rDNA, IGS rDNA and ß-tubulin, were analyzed using Maximum Parsimony, Maximum Likelihood, and Bayesian methods. Eleven species were analyzed for the first time using DNA sequence data. Cladonia uncialis subsp. uncialis and subsp. biuncialis were recognized as distinct taxa. The recognition of C. pseudostellata as a species was not supported by the analyses, but it represents a hypothamnolic acid chemotype, which is reported here as new to Europe (Scotland). The presence of subsp. biuncialis in North America (Newfoundland) was substantiated. The subsp. uncialis usually lacks squamatic acid, but in the eastern United States a morph referred to as subsp. uncialis does normally contain that acid. However, this morph did not attain taxonomic recognition based on phylogenetic analyses. All the other taxa formerly included in sect. Unciales turned out to belong to other groups of Cladonia, mainly Amaurocraeae, Borya, Divaricatae, and Perviae. The formerly recognized genus Cladina (reindeer lichens) is non-monophyletic, consisting of three groups within Cladonia, making the concept Cladina even nomenclaturally useless. Alternative topology tests rejected the monophyly of C. pseudostellata, section Unciales and Cladina.

Abstract:
Borya mirabilis is one of the world's most critically endangered plants. The research in this thesis has illuminated key aspects of: its reproductive biology; interspecies and intraspecies molecular relationships, mycorrhizal status, tissue culture potential and disease threats. Each of these aspects has fundamental management implications for the active management of B. mirabilis. Floral observations of B. mirabilis and related species affirmed the uniqueness of the Boryaceae amongst the Asparagales. B. mirabilis had an unusually high number of floral abnormalities compared with other species of Borya observed. B. mirabilis is fly-pollinated. Pollen of Borya species showed little difference in the characteristics of mature pollen between species, with viable pollen being prolate and unicolpate with a single colpa-style aperture and a unique patterning of the pila. The structural immaturity of B. mirabilis pollen correlated with evidence from pollen growth experiments, where B. mirabilis pollen had extremely low germination rates, with those grains that did germinate being slow to do so and with slow-growing pollen tubes compared to those of fertile Borya species. Examination of the ovules of B. mirabilis showed that morphologically they were viable compared to viable Borya species. The field population of B. mirabilis was crossed, with one seed produced (the first recorded seed for th is species). Cross-pollination using the pollen of the closely related B. constricta and B. sphaerocephala with B. mirabilis ovules proved unsuccessful. Examination of the chromosome number of B. mirabilis showed that it had approximately 66 chromosomes and is probably hexaploid, relative to the diploid number of 26 in B. constricta. This may explain its low fertility. Interspecies and intraspecies relationships of the Boryaceae and Borya mirabilis were investigated using sequences of chloroplast and nuclear DNA. The closest similarities to B. mirabilis were B. constricta and B. sphaerocephala. B. mirabilis may have emerged from alloploidy of these species in the past. Because of the consistent similarities of B. mirabilis and B. constricta chloroplast sequences, it is proposed that both shared a common ancestor with a chromosome number of 2n=22. A malfunction n meiosis may have resulted in ovules with 2n=44. The high similarity of the nuclear ribosomal ITS region DNA suggests that the nuclear DNA was derived from B. sphaerocephela. B. mirabilis may be an allopolyploid, from fertilisation of a diploid ovule of B. constricta with haploid pollen of B. sphaerocephala, resulting in a reproductively isolated polyploidy of low fertility. The wild population of B. mirabilis was determined to have a small amount of genetic variation. The genetic variation in the field population w as not fully reflected in the ex-situ population. An effective means of micro-propagation of B. nitida for use in B. mirabilis has been established, providing an effective means of mass production of the species. The research has determined: a suitable explant (shoot tips) for regeneration; an effective means of reducing contamination in tissue culture (PPM); what medium is required to micro-propagate the species (LMHM); an appropriate gelling agent (Phytagel); and a practical method for inducing roots on the shoots grown in tissue culture. B. mirabilis has been established as mycorrhizal. The predominant mycorrhizal association is a nodular arbuscular mycorrhiza, present in the form of coils in root nodules over wetter months and as spores in these nodules over dryer months. A significant increase in the health of the ex-situ population of B. mirabilis was recorded after addition of soil containing fine roots of the wild population. Of the plants associated with the wild population, Callitris rhomboidea had the most morphologically similar vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal relationship. But molecular identification was not achieved due to recalcitrance of DNA in PCR attempts. Potential translocation sites for some of the ex-situ population of B. mirabilis were examined for Phytophthora infestation. Reid's Lookout and Mackey's Peak were infected with P. cinnamomi. Vegetation at Mackey's Peak displayed characteristic infection symptoms, resulted in isolates of P. cinnamomi from baiting and would directly receive runoff from both the walking track and the existing infested B .mirabilis site. At the Reid's Lookout site, both walking track and proposed translocation site were infested with P. cinnamomi, yet did not display the associated symptoms in the vegetation. The Pine Plantation translocation site was uninfected at the level of sampling undertaken. Its vegetation did not display any characteristic infection symptoms and was not isolated when soil samples were baited. It was therefore chosen for translocation and so far the plants are healthy and actively growing. This research has provided critical knowledge to aid the recovery team in its current and future endeavours to manage this species and bring it back from the brink of extinction.

In this work we will make a theoretical investigation over some general properties of edge magnetoplasmos (EMP) - collective quiral excitations which propagates at the edges of a bidimensional solid state plasma (often called bidimensional electronic system- 2DES) under the quantum Hall regime (QHR) with lling factor of = 1(2),with very strong dissipation in the edges, where the Landau levels (LL) intercept the Fermi levels (FL). We will take into account only homogenuous samples, that means, without a consideration of a gate nor an air substrate over the heterostructure; pointed out that the EMP behaviour, especially the wave quality, has a strong dependence on the gate. EMP s were rst reported in the 80 s, and have attracted much attention in the past decade with advent of some new nano-2DES, new experimental methods - as the time- resolved experiments, and nano electronic aplications. Adopting a microscopic model, we could con rm recent works (2010), and we con rmed that even in the strong dissipation regime, here considered, there is still a mode that persists, an edge helicon (EH), with excelent quality - when all other modes are very damped. We also nd new interesting properties of this EH, in fact, we can show that the "window of transparency" of this EH is 10 times bigger then the value so far known from the scienti c literature, its spatial structure was also here accquired with better precision; and it exibits a more smooth behavior if compared to recent articles.

Abstract:
The concept of locally produced food is nowadays widely known and used by both companies and private individuals. The term locally produced food has never been assigned an official definition, and therefore the opinions about it are separated. Many believe that locally produced goods are produced in their neighborhoods, others that it applies to all production within national boundaries, and another group believes that it depends on what product it is. This papers purpose is that through interviews with actors in the value chain of groceries, examine how they perceive the innovations that is locally produced food, how it is different for each operator and simply see what local produced means for their organization. We believe that locally produced food has emerged as an innovation, which means a new idea created by humans and its entry into the society. Along the model of this process, we analyzed how respondents were affected by the process and its first three steps, knowledge, persuasion and decision. Mainly drawn parallels to organic farming as more or less the contrast of the term locally produced food, and this opens up for discussion concerning the future of locally produced food. We have also found that respondents, both privately and in their professional lives, are affected by various communication channels that may have been the basis for the knowledge that later contributed to their decision about what the term locally produced food really means.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Borda count is a pairwise comparison method which can be shown to have various desirable properties. Questions have been raised about the efficacy of the Borda count and its engineering equivalents for concept selection in engineering design. Of chief concern is the possibility of rank reversals among design alternatives when other alternatives are added or dropped from consideration. Results from simulations are presented that show the likelihood that Borda count comparisons will result in rank reversals upon modifications of the set of alternatives. The available evidence indicates that rank reversals in the Borda count are generally restricted to alternatives that are difficult to distinguish.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Even though Bora Mikic did his doctoral thesis on contact conductance, it was natural that he became involved immediately thereafter with the boiling group in the MIT Heat Transfer Laboratory. After all, contact conductance depends on randomly spaced points of contact between two surfaces, while nucleate pool boiling depends on randomly spaced cavities on a surface covered by liquid. Bora worked actively in boiling in the 1960s and 1970s. Collaborating with Warren Rohsenow, he developed what still is one of the most fundamental models for saturated pool boiling.
