Szigeti, Mate. "Borrowed traditions : portfolio of compositions with accompanying commentary." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2016. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/402379/.

Full text
Abstract:
The following commentary introduces six pieces written between 2012 and 2015, during the period of my PhD research at the University of Southampton, UK. All of the pieces discussed here are, on some level, concerned with the subject of borrowing, be it the use of pre-existing musical material, or elements of different traditions, compositional practices in a broad historical context. Different approaches are represented in the ways the individual pieces refer to existing music, ranging from literal quotations to stylistic allusions. The commentary presents the ways these references are transformed, manipulated, and re-contextualised in the pieces discussed. I also attempt to contextualise my music through considering related works by other composers, as well as related debates within postmodern theory. Today - partly as a result of globalisation - the concept of tradition takes on a new aspect: it is less significantly defined by national affiliations, or commitments to particular trends and movements that stem from regional cultures/aesthetics. It is no longer something given, inherited; a multitude of traditions are available to choose from and explore through the arts. In this spirit, the presented works refer to a wide variety of musical traditions, from folk music, through Renaissance polyphony, the German Lied to post-war compositional styles and practices. The commentary includes a general introduction to the compositional techniques lying behind the works presented as well as six analyses supplementing the pieces included in my composition portfolio.

Abstract:
In this thesis, some old decision strategies are investigated and a new one that furthers our understanding of how decisions are made is introduced. Three studies are presented. In Study I and II, strategies are investigated in terms of inferences and in Study III, strategies are investigated in terms of preferences. Inferences refer to decisions regarding facts, e.g., whether a patient has a heart disease or not. Preferences refer to decision makers’ personal preferences between different choice alternatives, e.g., which flat out of many to choose. In all three studies, both non-compensatory strategies and compensatory strategies were investigated. In compensatory strategies, a high value in one attribute cannot compensate for a low value in another, while in non-compensatory strategies such compensation is possible. Results from Study I showed that both compensatory (logistic regression) and non-compensatory (fast and frugal) strategies make inferences equally well, but logistic regression strategies are more frugal (i.e., use fewer cues) than the fast and frugal strategies. Study II showed that the results were independent of the degree of expertise. The good inferential ability of both non-compensatory and compensatory strategies suggests there might be room for a strategy that can combine the strengths of the two. Study III introduces such a strategy, the Concordant-ranks (CR) strategy. Results from Study III showed that choices and attractiveness evaluations followed this new strategy. This strategy dictates a choice of an alternative with concordant ranks between attribute values and attribute weights when alternatives are about equally attractive. CR also serves as a proxy for finding the alternative with the shortest distance to an ideal. The CR strategy combines the computational simplicity of non-compensatory strategies with the superior information integration ability of compensatory strategies.

Dalivalle, Margaret. "Borrowed comlinesse : copying from pictures in seventeenth-century England." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.571619.

Full text
Abstract:
The prolific professional practice of copying from pictures in seventeenth-century England has come to define the artistic climate of the period. The dominance and advancement of foreign-born painters in working in London: Sir Anthony Van Dyck, Sir Peter Lely, and Sir Godfrey Kneller; the comprehensive influence of the portrait- types they developed for the English market, and the campaign since the last decades of the seventeenth century for an 'English School of Painting', focussed on the promotion of history or subject painting, have contributed to a characterisation of the period as a time when native artists, detached from the artistic innovations of mainland Europe, slavishly adhered to the patterns set by leading foreigners. Because copies are now seen as secondary to originals in fine art, as in other categories, copied pictures have been considered an inferior class of object, not worthy of critical attention. As a result of the confluence of all these factors, the period has been marginalised as derivative and inconsequential in art-historical terms. This thesis argues that modem attitudes are at variance with the reception of copies and the professional practice of copying in seventeenth-century England, therefore the artistic production of the period is currently fundamentally misunderstood. It investigates the status of copies and originals over the course of the century, linking shifts in their intellectual and economic values to the origins of the secondary market for art at the outset of the century, the sale of the Royal Collection during the Interregnum, and market saturation in the 1690s. The roles and functions of copies in collections are demonstrated from material in inventories, diaries and letters. Techniques and tools for copying are reconstructed and re-enacted, and compared to a little-known class of intermediary drawings. This study pinpoints the first enunciation of the concept of artistic originality in the nexus of the major secondary art markets of London and the Low Countries during the 1690s. Noting that artists of all nationalities and classes in England engaged in copying, the study aligns contemporary commentary about the studio production of replicas and copies, artists' creative use of copying and copies, and re-evaluates artistic intent in seventeenth- century England.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of a portfolio of nine musical compositions with accompanying recordings and commentary. The works included range from solo chamber music to large ensemble and explore the notions of mimesis, memory, and borrowed materials in musical composition. The commentary begins by providing a framework and historical context to the portfolio and in particular explores mimesis as an æsthetic device across the centuries and art forms. Music for amateurs and multiple tempi are then presented as two sub facets within the main research before a detailed exploration of the various source materials ensues. The commentary examines different approaches taken to an eclectic mix of source materials including popular music, hymns and plainchant, and music from the classical canon. Questions raised by writing music with multiple tempi or for amateurs are addressed before a general conclusion examining approaches to melody, harmony, rhythm, and form, across the portfolio.

Sparkes, Matthew. "Borrowed identities : credit, debt and classificatory struggles in neoliberal Britain." Thesis, University of York, 2015. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/11360/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis unpacks the complex and interconnected relationships between credit and debt, specific techniques of government, and social class processes over time. The thesis is underpinned by a social ecological model: it operates horizontally across the credit and debt realms and vertically on three levels – the meta, the macro and the micro. Methodologically, the data are generated from archival databases, experiences drawn from working within a debt charity, and in-depth interviews with 21 individuals using the services of StepChange Debt Charity to help with their financial difficulties. The thesis starts by exploring how a cadre of free-marketers proposed a series of economic and social policies from the 1950s which aimed to configure a new form of governmentality. Drawing upon documents drawn from various archives, the thesis reveals how their ideas – the market, the consumer, and the pursuit of private property – all rely on unhindered credit to operate. The thesis subsequently examines identity formation within a social domain dominated by these ideas and awash with credit. Building a theoretical framework based on Pierre Bourdieu’s relational understandings of class and Anthony Giddens’ notion of ontological security, the thesis then draws on interview data to outline how the participants use credit to build identities in response to amplifying inequality. A consequence of this process for the participants is the accumulation of a large credit balance, and their fall-into-debt. Here the thesis changes track, beginning to explore the dominant forms of governmentality that structure the debt realm. Initially tracing how debt collection practices threaten the participants’ capital stocks, the thesis moves onto expose how the shame and fear these practices induce are not unintended but instead serve to transform identities. The thesis shows how neoliberals classify and stigmatise those who fall-into-debt as irresponsible and immoral debtors, and disseminate a discourse of individual financial responsibility, with the intention of normalising total debt repayment. The thesis draws upon the interview data to reveal how the participants come to internalise these discourses and reconstruct their lives to make sure they submit to it. This thesis argues the realms of credit and debt, the forms of governmentality engendered to support them, and the ‘classificatory struggles’ they induce, are arranged to provide enduring, maximised and protected profit streams to those who produce and distribute credit.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of our thesis is to make an analysis and create an understanding for how the development for special collections, within the fashion retail segment, will look in the future and to see if/how special collections are connected to overconsumption.Methodology: In this thesis, we have relied on a qualitative research strategy for collecting and analyzing data. The research design applied resembles of case studies but is correctly defined as cross-sectional design. We have done semi-structured interviews with three practitioners and one expert. We have also done content analysis of the campaigns for the three current special collections we have investigated. Conclusions: We have come up with the conclusion that there is a future for special collections, but it needs to be a development from how they are worked out today. Some factors are more relevant than others for a possible success for the special collections. These factors are that the collection offers a high rate of trend awareness, that it enables to offer the consumer something extraordinary and that the collection is anchored within environmental issues.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes and demonstrates the similarities and differences between some of the national symbols of France and the United States. This includes the shared and borrowed aspects of each one and the ways in which each culture is reflected through, and built around them. The flags, national anthems, and several national icons such as France's Marianne and Uncle Sam are discussed. This analysis deals with the historical contexts and cultural meanings of the symbols, showing the changes each has undertaken in form and in national and international importance. Through the study of national symbols, this thesis reveals the similarities along with the differences between the two nations, which are often perceived as being highly dissimilar and even opposing in belief systems, cultures, and histories.

After the Kuwait war in 1991 has China begun to modernize is defence force and where theinformation technology have got a more important role. The information technology hasbrought to consequence an increased Chinese interest for information operations as a methodto attack adversary systems. The purpose with this essay is to lay a foundation for a increased knowledge in Chinese viewsand capacity to information operations and information warfare, and within these areasespecially highlight CNO. The reason for that is to get an insight in the Chinese rearmament. The method used to analyse this is by text analyses compare Chinese and American fightingcapability in information operations in general and in CNO in particular. The theory base forthe comparison is build upon the Swedish ”Pelarmodellen” as the tool for the analyse of thefighting capacity. The result shows that there is similarities between USA and China, but there is also crucialdifferences. They consists mainly of Chinese integration between civil and military resourceswhere militia units constitute a important contribution to the army, and the use of strategies asa way to compensate technological inferiority in witch I discovered a lack of discussion onlegal aspects revolving the use of CNO on the Chinese part.

Abstract:
Summary The language of television represents a burning problem which is somewhat underemphasized, in particular with respect to the language of children programs. Television inevitably influences children and contributes to the formation of their language skills. Therefore, the language of TV programs intended for children must be as clear, accurate and comprehensive as possible and the word carried in the ether shall be vivid, expressive and conform to the rules of standard language. The subject matter of this study is the borrowed vocabulary used in TV programs for children. Based on the material collected from programs „Gustavo enciklopedija“ and „Tele bim bam“ (the study material covers eight shows of „Gustavo enciklopedija“ program and eight shows of „Tele bim bam“ program broadcast over Lithuanian TV channel in the period from September 20, 2003 to February 1, 2004), the study has attempted at defining and describing the specifics of loanwords in oral language of children programs as well as at analyzing and comparing the structure of borrowed vocabulary and its use tendencies observed with respect to TV programs „Gustavo enciklopedija“ and „Tele bim bam“. The above shall be considered as constituting the study objective. It should be noted that the language of children programs is not homogeneous. Apart from the native words, the language of children programs uses quite a number of loanwords, including the international words, new borrowings, barbarisms and... [to full text]

Abstract:
Most property development firms who invest in property will need to raise some extra financial support. Unforeseen or unexpected expenses can arise at any point in time during the development process. Calculated decisions should be taken with regards to the financial circumstances for any property development project. Decisions should be taken not only for the present but for the future as well. It is therefore important to understand the market and the current economic conditions before applying for capital to fund a property development project. There several types of finance available to fund property development, these include long term borrowing, short term borrowing, construction loans property development investment trust, second mortgages. There is risk to all of the aforementioned finance available.

Southwick, Sally Jo. "Building on a borrowed past: History, place, and identity in Pipestone, Minnesota." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/284014.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on Pipestone, Minnesota, which provides an important example of the process of creating and localizing national identity. Founded in 1874, the town derived its name from the nearby pipestone quarries, a traditional excavation site for regional tribes. In the early nineteenth century George Catlin's artistic representations made the area famous and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poetic interpretations of tribal mythology offered a romantic Indian past that appealed to industrializing America. This study proposes that the town's founders accepted the popular perceptions of the quarries' significance to the tribes--particularly the symbol of the "peacepipe" and its source in sacred ground--and actively employed related tribal imagery to create local identity and to promote the town on state and national levels. Emphasis on the quarries as unique and central to America's Indian heritage helped Pipestone attract railroad lines, a federal Indian boarding school in the 1890s, and a national monument in the 1930s to protect the quarries and to attract tourists. This dissertation traces the development of Pipestone from Catlin's early influential images of the quarries and tribes to the first productions of the town's annual "Song of Hiawatha" pageant in the 1940s and 1950s. Since the town's inception its residents continuously adapted their conceptions of the quarries' Indian heritage in order to generate a usable past. This study analyzes the ways in which they used tribal and landscape imagery to encourage town growth, investment, tourism, and the legitimizing presence of the federal government, making Pipestone a nationally-known place and a self-professed "real American" town. Archival sources examined include local and regional newspapers, memoirs, town business, state, and railroad promotional literature, federal institutional documents, state histories, and publications by the county historical society. These sources provide evidence of how the town's residents produced and maintained Pipestone's image and how this local process illustrates Americans' search for historical identity.

Alghamdi, Fahad. "THE USAGE OF NEWLY BORROWED COLOR TERMS IN ARABIC; GENDER AND REGIONAL VARIATIONS." OpenSIUC, 2014. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/1353.

Full text
Abstract:
Every language has distinct features that reflect the values of its culture. Some societies are similar or different in such aspects as gestures, talk, gender, dialects, colors and so on. This study focuses on the variables of gender and region on Saudi use of Arabic vs. newly borrowed color terms. For the theoretical background, the researcher used related studies related to the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, Berlin and Kay's hypothesis and Core Value theory. A total of 20 participants were asked to complete a single task in which they had to name 12 colors in Arabic writing. Participants were evenly divided between male and female and rural vs. urban region. The data was analyzed through descriptive multiple t-tests. The results had interesting implications for how color terms are currently being used by Saudi Arabic speakers, and what that usage might indicate about their background. In the case of the variable of gender, women displayed a significantly higher usage of newly borrowed color terms (33%) compared to men (18%). These findings were in keeping with similar results from other studies, although such studies were somewhat dated. In the case of region, participants from urban areas also displayed a statistically higher usage of newly borrowed color terms (32%) compared to those from rural areas (18%). This may have been due to people living in cities being exposed to, and therefore tending to use, a larger variety of color terms from different languages, such as English, Turkish and French. The newly borrowed color term used by participants the most was beige, while the traditional Arabic color term that was used the most was azraq 'blue' and ahmar 'red'. This was likely because these are considered more basic or fundamental colors and would therefore be less likely to be exchanged with a foreign word than a color that was not as commonly used in everyday life. These results could also have practical implications in areas where using such terms are prominent, such as business, trade, and education. In the area of business in particular, could be relevant to advertising, especially in the case of decoration, which deals with the labeling of colors.

Tyers, John Haydn. "Borrowed silence : a history of the practice of retreat in the Church of England." Thesis, University of Chester, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10034/253312.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis, which is the first attempt to write about the growth of retreats, deals with a rather sidelined but important development in the history of spirituality. It states when, how and why the practice of retreat was adopted and adapted in the Church of England after having been a devotion in the Church of Rome since the time of the Catholic Reformation and how it has developed since. It is divided chronologically into three major sections. The first tells the story of its adoption in 1858 by a group of Anglo Catholics in the form of the preached retreat and its subsequent spread to a small number of adherents, despite meeting opposition from Evangelical Christians. The second tells of the influence of a Jesuit brother, Charles Plater, and how after the First World War a number of Diocesan retreat houses were opened, the use of which continued to rise until after the Second World War. The third takes the story up to our present day with its adaptation to the needs of the present search for faith, its decline accompanying the present loss in membership in the churches whilst at the same time its adoption in various forms by non-Anglican groups. In particular it contains a history of the Society of Retreat Conductors. All the time comparison is made with what was happening in the Church of Rome. There are resonances with the history of the Victorian church, the attitude of the established church to the working classes, evangelism, the changing fortunes of Anglo Catholicism, the ecumenical movement and New Age Christianity. It is of interest to all who are concerned about spread of religious faith today.

Elizabeth, Vivienne. "Something old. Something borrowed. Something new.: Heterosexual cohabitation as marriage resistance? A feminist deconstruction." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Sociology, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4590.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines heterosexual cohabitation as a contested social arrangement that shapes, and is shaped by, power relations that constitute everyday situations. It considers two interconnecting concerns: the variety of meanings given by heterosexual cohabitees to cohabitation and marriage, and the contextually asserted boundaries of inclusion and exclusion between these categories. The focus is on how these meanings are strategically deployed, together with their symbolic markers, in order to lay claim to particular constructions of the self and their associated rewards and recognitions in specific settings. The examination of this process of management - 'managing selves' - forms the central problematic of this thesis. Cohabitation features in this research as a cluster of ideas, practices and political signals that are taken up according to their perceived utility in negotiating various dimensions of heterosexual coupledom. Specifically, the focus is on how individuals use 'cohabitation' as a way of indicating overt resistance to some, but not all, of the conventions of heterosexual marriage. Interviews with women and men illustrate ways in which cohabitation can be defined in contrast to marriage, and used to negotiate domestic and financial practices that differ in some respects from the gendered norms associated with 'traditional marriages'. In reading these interviews, particular attention is paid to how power is both exercised and resisted through the discursively constructed difference between cohabitation and marriage. The thesis is comprised of a series of essays that have been written in a form that allows them to be read as stand alone pieces. Focusing on cohabitation as 'marriage resistance', each chapter examines the strategic deployment of 'cohabitation' (and 'marriage') to negotiate the various identities - social, financial, domestic and emotional - that are constituted through heterosexual relationships.

Kasoka, Kasoka. "Informed consent requirements in HIV testing in Zambia : 'a question of a borrowed bucket'?" Thesis, Birkbeck (University of London), 2018. http://bbktheses.da.ulcc.ac.uk/339/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background - Zambia has one of the highest rates of HIV prevalence in the world. As of the year 2016, HIV prevalence in Zambia stood at 13.3% among people who are between 15-49 years of age. It is very important to reduce this, and to ensure that PLWHA are able to access appropriate treatment and support. This results in a better quality of life, improves health and well-being, and can help combat the stigma associated with the disease. In order to achieve this, PLWHA need to know their status, and this means testing. This is why exploring informed consent to testing – and understanding whether the value of autonomy and its application in HIV informed consent practice is appropriate, is important to this research. This research focusses on reviewing the appropriateness of individual autonomy in HIV testing in the Zambian context. Methods - I conducted both literature analysis and fieldwork for this study. I reviewed the notion of individual autonomy and informed consent by analysing the value from both Western liberal and sub-Saharan African (Zambian) traditional and moral theses. Having reviewed the value through literature analysis, I also decided to go to Zambia to learn about how the ordinary people there experience and view their autonomies, particularly in HIV testing. 103 participants from Lusaka and Chongwe, Zambia took part in this research’s fieldwork. The participants came from various demographics: PLWHA, pregnant women (and women in general), men in general, churchgoers, health-providers, policymakers, and participants in rural areas. Results - The results showed that the universalisation of the value of individual autonomy in HIV testing in the sub-Saharan Africa is inappropriate. It was found that individual decision-making is inextricably enmeshed in multiple influences – factors both internal and external to an individual – therefore, also making rational choice (internalist) theories to be inadequate accounts of autonomy. It was concluded that individual autonomy is an illusion. Moreover, it was also found that application of individual autonomy in HIV testing in the Zambian (and sub-Saharan Africa context) is morally indefensible. It was demonstrated that HIV does not only affect PLWHA, but also the common good. Conclusion - The findings have confirmed that individual autonomy is an illusion; and indicated that sub-Saharan Africa has an indigenous value system of Ubuntu which can appropriately be transposed in HIV testing informed consent requirements in Zambia. The traditional African ontological thesis of the human condition offers a more plausible basis for HIV informed consent requirements than the Western liberal perspective.

Abstract:

Britain’s long fifth century, 350-550 CE, was a period of transformative change across the island. It was not simply the end of one civilization and the beginning of another, but rather was a period during which people made meaningful choices about how important it was to them to continue acting like Romans or start acting like their new neighbors when the economy and social structures that had defined life in Britain for centuries dissolved. Historians can study material culture and burial practices to make these fifth-century inhabitants of Britain – invisible in the scarce textual accounts of the fifth century – visible in our historical narratives. Where living communities chose to bury their dead, what they chose to send with the deceased, and how they chose to build monuments to their memory can tell historians how they connected with or distanced themselves from the past that was, materially at least, rapidly disappearing and being replaced. Careful analysis of data from 8,602 burials in 102 cemetery populations, as well as burials of dogs and infants on settlements, indicates that changes in burial practices were the result not of migration from the continent nor the “fall” of Roman Britain, but rather were part of a larger shift from a society based upon Britain’s relationship with the Roman Empire to one based upon its local communities, whether composed of natives, or newcomers, or both. No matter where people came from, no two communities reacted to the upheaval of the fifth century in the same way, and there were no monolithic or universal ways of relating the past to the present and future. New practices appeared, and old practices continued, some of which were better suited to some fifth-century inhabitants of Britain than others

Abstract:
A.L. McLeod's comment on the literature of Hong Kong, a former Commonwealth colony of Britain, represents the consensus that Hong Kong has 'produced no literature'. Also pertinent is his view that Hong Kong has 'no sense of national identity, no cause to follow, no common goal'. The Handover in 1997 represented a new era for Hong Kong as it came under a new sovereign with a new identity. It is now time to rethink the relevance of McLeod's assertion, made some four decades ago. Hong Kong has long been regarded as a 'cultural desert', which is not a favorable environment to create any impetus to cultivate development in culture and arts. However, following reunification with China, Hong Kong is now permeated by a Chinese national identity that is less ambiguous and more legitimate than its former colonial counterpart. Decolonisation has, without a shadow of doubt, provided all Hongkongers with a 'common goal' to anticipate, inducing them to question whether recent history has given Hong Kong a new identity; and, whether there are incentives for claiming it. However, the key question is whether present day Hong Kong has given inspiration and 'calligraphic ink' for Hong Kong literature; in particular, how Hong Kong's new identity has been reflected in literary works. This research relates postcolonial thinking to literature emanating from Hong Kong, its thrust is to dissect and explore the implicit meanings evident in the use of the English language by native Hong Kong writers as they expound the identity of Hong Kong. Does Anglophone writing in these instances express the identity of Hong Kong? Addressing the writings of Hong Kong native Xu Xi (writer of Hong Kong Rose), Agnes Lam (Woman to Woman and Other Poems) and Louise Ho (New Ends, Old Beginnings), the research also considers how such adaptations result collaterally in cultural displacements, diasporic experience and a linguistic identity crisis, which leads to the .consideration of whether a uniquely Hong Kong cultural identity may be said to emerge ex post facto from the postcolonial situation, or whether a hybrid identity existed prior to the political upheaval of 1997. The earlier part of the thesis focuses on the investigation of subjects' nostalgic feelings towards their past. Chapter one provides a general overview of the political situation of Hong Kong that gave rise to a special cultural phenomenon which this thesis examines: the special nostalgia in Hong Kong's memory is due to its unique political situation. It discusses the presentation and the perspective on time taken by the three writers. Identifying Xu Xi as idealistic, Agnes Lam as individualistic and Louise Ho as skeptical, this thesis further consider how these different writers deal with the postcolonial experiences of their time in the perception and construction oftheir identity. One of the major focuses of this thesis is the notion of a postcolonial time sense, that is, the perplexing competition between the time and memory of the coloniser and that of the colonised. The focus of this research then turns to language. Pursuing the idea that language creates a voice and an identity, this thesis considers how these three writers deal with the various languages current in Hong Kong and their opinion on languages which empower and disempower them. The capacity of language to marginalise is one of the focuses of discussion. The study of marginal identity will be revisited in the last chapter and the angle will change to bring into view the marginality that is brought about by space. Another primary area of analysis in this thesis is postcolonial geography. Following on from the discussion of nostalgia, the analysis of this feeling of inertia will extend from time to space and in an examination of the significance of 'homeland' in these postcolonial works. In its conclusion, the thesis explores the procedures which these writers have adopted in constructing a postcolonial identity for Hong Kong by examining their dealings with the displacement brought by migration, colonisation and globalisation, together with the attempted transcendence of physical distance and psychological boundaries.

Abstract:
Funding requirements is one of the first criteria to consider when restructuring a business. Companies and taxpayers would choose the best option when acquiring shares to minimise tax liabilities. The purpose of this study is to formulate an interest deductibility test which provides guidance to taxpayers regarding the main criteria to investigate when restructuring a business transaction to ensure that interest will be deductible on the acquisition of shares with borrowed funds. The findings reveal the similarities and differences of the interest deductibility as seen by South Africa, Australia and Canada. This study will present the legislation as well as court cases in South Africa, Australia and Canada to demonstrate the interest deductibility principles when funds are borrowed to acquire shares when restructuring a business. The focus will be on these principles to provide guidelines from which taxpayers can determine the interest deductibility with respect to share purchasing transactions. The study will indicate recommendations to South African legislation based on the findings of alternative treatments applied by Canada and Australia.

Abstract:
Keyphrases describe a document in a coherent and simple way, giving the prospective reader a way to quickly determine whether the document satisfies their information needs. The pervasion of huge amount of information on Web, with only a small amount of documents have keyphrases extracted, there is a definite need to discover automatic keyphrase extraction systems. Typically, a document written by human develops around one or more general concepts or sub-concepts. These concepts or sub-concepts should be structured and semantically related with each other, so that they can form the meaningful representation of a document. Considering the fact, the phrases or concepts in a document are related to each other, a new approach for keyphrase extraction is introduced that exploits the semantic relations in the document. For measuring the semantic relations between concepts or sub-concepts in the document, I present a comprehensive study aimed at using collaboratively constructed semantic resources like Wikipedia and its link structure. In particular, I introduce a graph-based keyphrase extraction system that exploits the semantic relations in the document and features such as term frequency. I evaluated the proposed system using novel measures and the results obtained compare favorably with previously published results on established benchmarks.

Full text
Abstract:
The dissolved oxygen concentration has progressively decreased in the bottom water of the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary (LSLE) during the last century and reached the severe hypoxic threshold ([O2] < 62.5 µmol L-1) in the 1980s where it has hovered ever since. This thesis investigates the causes and impacts of the large-scale persistent hypoxia in the bottom water of the LSLE, using multidisciplinary tools. The causes were identified, by examining the processes governing the oxygen distribution in the water column, using a two-dimensional advection-diffusion model representing the transport of oxygen in the bottom water along the Laurentian Channel (Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada). The impacts of persistent hypoxia were highlighted on modifications of sediment chemistry, more specifically by the diagenetic response of three redox-sensitive elements, Mn, Fe, and As, as well as on the fluxes of nutrients and metabolites across the sediment-water interface. Results of numerical simulations revealed that the oxygen distribution in the water column is governed by the combination of physical and biogeochemical processes, but its vertical distribution is mostly controlled by the deep-water circulation. In other words, the vertical distribution is much more sensitive to variations in physical than biogeochemical processes, and oxygen conditions at the continental shelf edge, where Laurentian Channel bottom waters originate, are mostly responsible for the establishment of hypoxia in the Lower Estuary. Whereas the concentrations and vertical distributions of sedimentary Mn phases seem to adjust rapidly to the progressive depletion of oxygen in the overlying waters and remained at steady-state since the 1980s, the development and persistence of hypoxia strongly modified the chemistry of Fe and As in LSLE sediments. The lower overlying-water oxygenation increased the proportion of organic matter that is oxidized by anaerobic pathways in the sediments, which contributed to increase the proportion of dissolved and solid reactive phases of Fe and As. The greater availability of reactive Fe and As phases restricted the formation of pyrite, which, in turn, limited the sequestration of As with pyrite, increasing the availability of this potentially toxic trace element to benthic organisms. Despite the accumulation of Fe and As in sedimentary reactive phases over the past 25 years, it has not significantly modified their fluxes across the sediment-water interface, and their sequestration within the sediment is maintained.

Abstract:
Section 59(1) of the Competition Act, 89 of 1998 authorises the Competition Tribunal to impose administrative penalties on firms who have committed prohibited forms of anti-competitive conduct, for example a penalty of R45 million was imposed on South African Airways (Pty) Ltd for abuse of dominance and a penalty of R98 784 869.90 was imposed on Tiger Consumer Brands (Pty) Ltd for price fixing. This paper will consider whether the interest expenditure incurred by a company, which raises a loan in order to pay such a penalty, would be deductible in terms of the general case law on the deductibility of interest or in terms of section 24J(2) of the Income Tax Act, 58 of 1962 ('the Act')

Abstract:

Herbert, Clare. "“Something borrowed, something new”: What meanings do gay and lesbian Christians, who are Anglicans attending the church of St. Martin-in-the-fields, give to their relationships of civil partnership?" Thesis, Anglia Ruskin University, 2016. https://arro.anglia.ac.uk/id/eprint/702947/1/Herbert_2016.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The Civil Partnership Act (2004) was a watershed in the history of gay rights in the United Kingdom, paving the way for later legislation, including the Marriage (Same- Sex Couples) Act (2013). Lesbian and gay Christians entered civil partnerships, although there was little explicit theology to support their decision, and the Church of England opposed the Act in its official statements. This research explores an emerging theology of civil partnership, examining in particular the voices of gay and lesbian Christians who made this decision, in order primarily to bring first person accounts to bear on discussions of same-sex relationships at St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and in the wider Church. The topic was investigated within a broad conceptual framework of hermeneutical practical theology, the language and theology of marriage, and queer theology. Using qualitative research, the research method adopted was semi-structured interviews, offered to the thirteen members of the congregation of St. Martin-in-the-Fields who were in civil partnerships when the research began. Eleven verbatim reports, with two responses to structured questionnaires, were coded by a process of thematic analysis, evidencing overarching themes. Three major themes were identified. First, the public nature of the rite and ensuing relationship effected transformations, in which the love of God was known. I interpreted that both the civil partnership rites and corresponding relationships participate in the queer sacramental nature of reality. Second, participants reflected that God had acted in both personal and political history. I interpreted their views to reveal an emerging if under-developed queer liberation theology. Third, almost all participants likened their relationships to Christian marriage. I perceived that in effect this meant that they had “queered” the theology and language of marriage, simply by inhabiting it. Overall, I conclude that these gay and lesbian Christian narratives create a queer theology of civil partnership, in which the understanding of the presence, activity and blessing of God—“something borrowed” from Christian history—is made new in meaning, by being lived in the actual experience of their faith and life.
