Abstract:
Borneo is the third-largest island in the world, sharing three countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam. There is rarely research conducted for cross-border tourism (CBT) in Borneo. The study examines tourism development in Borneo then assesses potentials and challenges associated with Brunei-CBT as gateway to tourism in Borneo. A qualitative approach has been deployed focusing on advantages and challenges associated with Brunei as gateway for CBT in the Borneo Island. The analysis has shown that there is great potential in CBT for mobility and connectivity of people, goods, and services in Brunei-CBT's initiative. Brunei-CBT (BCBT) will trigger Brunei's economic shifting from an oil-based country to a service-based economy. Identified challenges mainly concern political support and willingness among participating countries, which may lead to barriers for connecting Borneo through CBT development.

Abstract:
Orthoptera from Sandakan, Sabah are relatively understudied compared to some other parts of Borneo, and lack of information of species there can impede our understanding of the origins and biodiversity of orthopterans in Borneo and, in general, Southeast Asia. Based on a recent orthopteran survey in Sandakan, one new species of Lebinthus Stål is described: Lebinthus sandakan sp. nov. The male calling song of this new species is also presented. The calling song of Cardiodactylus borneoe Robillard & Gorochov, 2014 is also described for the first time.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article aims to evaluate the development of medicine and health services in North Borneo starting after the concession of North Borneo to the British North Borneo Company in 1881 until the establishment of the first dispensary in North Borneo in 1914. Before the British North Borneo Company came to North Borneo, modern medical and health services in North Borneo still did not yet exist. The majority of the local community only relies on traditional medicine to overcome any diseases. After the arrival of the British North Borneo Company at North Borneo, they built hospitals and dispensaries for the use of British officers and labourers. However, the lack of expertise in treating infectious disease has caused it to spread in North Borneo. So with that, the British acted to restructure the health administration and build more hospitals and dispensaries to address the health issues that arose and avoid labor shortages. Within this framework, this study will evaluate the development of medical and health services from 1881 to 1914 by focusing on three main objectives. The first objective will identify health issues arising in North Borneo. Whereas the second objective will study the medical and health services provided by BNBC. The third objective will discuss the Medical and Health Ordinance that BNBC has enacted. This study was completed using library and archival methods.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on Hayashi Fumiko’s short story “Borneo Daiya” which is written based on her experiences in Borneo in 1943. Through stories about Japanese people who were sent to Borneo during the wartime such as Ianfu (Comfort Women) and Civilian Army, Fumiko raises the reality of Japanese Colonialization in Borneo -as the land of Japanese occupation- and its reflection into Japan itself. By exploring the meaning of the diamonds mined in Borneo for each character, this study analyze how these diamonds represent the realities of Japanese Colonialism in Borneo and examine the author’s motives in writing about this theme. In the first section, this study considers the importance of geographical aspects of the novel. In the second section it examines the relationship between Hayashi Fumiko and Borneo. In the third section there is an analysis of the significance of the platonic love between Manabe and Tamae, which emerges in the shadow of the Japanese colonization of South Borneo. In the fourth section, this study illustrates the form of pseudo-patriotism that Manabe’s wife displays in offering the diamond to the government. In the fifth section, this study investigates how Tamae’s body is represented as being analagous to the diamonds themselves from a colonialist point of view. Lastly, this study discusses the author’s closeness to Borneo and the island’s significance for Hayashi Fumiko.

The North Borneo lease to the American Trading Company (ATC) by the Sultan of Brunei has pioneered the establishment of a colony of mercantilism. This paper will discuss the status of regional leasing in North Borneo by ATC and more leasing and submission of territories in North Borneo has been made by external power. The legacy of Charles Lee Moses is important to the existence of a symbiotic relationship between ATC and the British North Borneo (Chartered) Company (BNBC). This has had a huge impact on the transformation of society in North Borneo. The disadvantages of the leasing agreement sealed by the Sultan of Brunei and Moses have opened its attachment to the oversight of ATCs who are too pragmatic to allow their representatives to make any form of agreement and consulate in their trading territories. This article describes a number of matters relating to diplomatic, trade and security relations that have been the cause of the changing status of leasing and submission of territories in North Borneo to BNBC represented by Baron Von Overbeck and Alfred Dent.

Abstract:
This study is related to the practice of slavery happened in indigenous communities in North Borneo since under the rule of the Sultanate of Sulu and Brunei. The aim of this study to see how slavery is considered as a unique practice and the slave role in daily life, including the type of slaves and relationship between the slave and their owners. This study will use information about slavery in North Borneo which are available from various sources such as diary, Official records of British North Borneo Chartered Company (BNBCC), Reports, News paper, Microfilm, books and articles. Slavery in North Borneo basically influenced by the role of datu’s and pengiran of the Sulu Sultanate and Brunei which sparked demand for slaves. This causes a form of slavery that occurred in the indigenous tribes such as Suluk, Bajau, Iranun, Dusun and Murut. The practice of slavery grow rapidly along with pirate activities which are intertwined with the slave trading in the Borneo sea. However, before settling by James Brooke in Sarawak and BNBCC in North Borneo, the abolition of slavery activities was implemented. This study will use the method of data analysis through a historical approach by using primary sources in the archives consisting of colonial documents such as secretariat files, colonial office files, North Borneo Medical Annual Reports, official letters, memoranda and newspapers. Through research on sources, researchers have found that the health services provided as well as the regulations that have been enacted by the British government shows that they pay attention to the health conditions of the coolies. This is because the high death rate from the coolies will affect the British economic gain in North Borneo, especially in the logging industry. It is hoped that this writing can be used as a reference source to study the history of the development of the North Borneo logging industry in the field of medical and health.

Abstract:
This study focusing on the social interactions between the European community and the communities in North Borneo during the era of the British North Borneo Company from 1881 to 1941. This study identifies the interrelated factors between the European community and the communities in North Borneo. This study is specific to social interaction between European community with Chinese, Indians, Muruts, Dusun and Sulu’s people in North Borneo which began when these group was given the opportunity to hold positions in the British administration. Based on primary and secondary sources obtained from archives and libraries, the findings of the study found that the beginning of the relationship between the European community with the communities mentioned above is as soon as they work as subordinate workers. After that, the officials followed a lifestyle of the middle class in Europe as revealed by European administrative officials serving in North Borneo. They are not only exposed to the lifestyle of European officials’, but also the image and prestige. However, what limits the social interaction between the European community and the community in North Borneo is the cultural differences and social position in society. Therefore, this study would like to see the role of European community associations and clubs in North Borneo as it can improve the relationship between the European community and the community in North Borneo because, these associations and clubs not only accept non-European members, but also organize sports and leisure to all races, religions and genders. Therefore, this study would like to see the social interaction between the European community and the community in North Borneo which can be seen not only based on their relationship in clubs and associations as well as the relationship of European men and women in North Borneo.

Abstract:
There are two species diversity of Asian elephants in Indonesia, namely: Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) and Borneo elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis). This literature study aims to identify and analyze the diversity of Asian elephants in Indonesia, namely: Sumatran elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus) and Borneo elephants (Elephas maximus borneensis) as seen from their genetics (Microsatellites). This elephant is listed in the red list book of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) from precarious to critically endangered. Meanwhile, the Borneo Elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis) is included in the IUCN red list with the endangered category. The Amely gene of the Sumatran elephant's Y chromosome is used to trace offspring paternally. Meanwhile, Borneo elephants have low genetic diversity due to the low average number of alleles and heterezygotes and genetic research on Borneo elephants is also still small. For this reason, it is necessary to make further conservation efforts to maintain the Borneo elephant species that have unique characteristics. This Borneo elephant is a unique species, because it is smaller or dwarf in size than other elephants, with straight tusks and has a long tail

Abstract:
Slavery has a very significant function for humans for centuries, and the indigenous people in North Borneo are also not exempt from the system which ended after the arrival of the North Borneo Chartered Company (SBBU) in 1881. Slavery in North Borneo affected many aspects, especially in their socio-political and socio-economic. In addition to functioning as labor or workforce, the existence of slaves can symbolize the status, power, influence and identity of the communities that practicing it such as the Suluk, Bajau, Iranun and Malay tribes of Brunei. In fact, slaves play a big role in the social activities of traditional societies such as trophies, gifts or sacrifices in a ceremony, also functioning as sacrifice in ritual for tribes such as Murut, Kadazan, Dusun, and Rundum. Therefore, this article will detail the policies and actions taken by SBBU in abolition the practice of slavery in North Borneo. SBBU sees slavery as an inhumane tradition, as well as against their struggle to uphold the humane and moral values of society. This effort is in line with the demands of the Royal Charter and is a move to change and modernize the social aspects of society in North Borneo. This article will further discuss how the abolition policy is implemented through SBBU policies and laws until slavery activities are completely eradicated in North Borneo.

Abstract:
Islam and Malay are undeniably inseparable from Borneo Island. This book elaborates the writer’s thoughts about Islam and Malay, especially in Borneo Island. Hermansyah himself was triggered by the small number of literatures or research on Borneo Island. Therefore, those reasons encouraged him to write more about Borneo and its living society. Islam and Malay in Borneo consists of eight chapters that present various kinds of Malay and Islam comprehensively. Chapter one is about the identity of Islam and Malay. To begin with, Malay, once, was considerably identical to Islam. If someone embraces Islam, then he or she will be considered a Malay, no matter his/her ethnic background. Nevertheless, in line with the social and political life, the idea has also been shifted.

Abstract:
Borneo Island is governed by the countries of Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) and Indonesia(Kalimantan) and is part of Sundaland. These countries have a high diversity of freshwater fishes, especially describedand undescribed species of Cypriniformes; together these species and other flora and fauna represent an extraordinaryopportunity for worldwide collaboration to investigate the biodiversity, conservation, management and evolution ofBorneo’s wildlife. Much of the fauna and flora of Borneo is under significant threat, warranting an immediate and swiftinternational collaboration to rapidly inventory, describe, and conserve the diversity. The Sunda drainage appears to havebeen an important evolutionary centre for many fish groups, including cypriniforms (Cyprinidae, Balitoridae andGyrinocheilidae); however, Northwestern Borneo (Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak) is not connected to Sundaland, and thisdisjunction likely explains the non-homogeneity of Bornean ichthyofauna. A previous study confirmed that northernBorneo, eastern Borneo and Sarawak shared a similar ichthyofauna, findings that support the general hypothesis forfreshwater connections at one time between western Borneo and central Sumatra, and south Borneo and Java island.Borneo is drained by five major rivers: (1) Rajang and Baram rivers in Sarawak, and (2) Kapuas, Mahakam and Baritorivers in Kalimantan. The Cypriniformes is the most diverse clade in Borneo, and it is represented by at least 285 speciesin 55 genera and eight major clades (Balitoridae, Cobitidae, Cyprinidae, Gyrinocheilidae, Leptobarbidae, rasborines, cultrines and Paedocyprididae); at least 147 (52%) of these species are endemic to the incredibly diverse habitats ofBorneo. Most fish faunal studies in Borneo have involved inventory and discovery; however, none to date have focusedtheir efforts on the great biodiversity and systematics of Cypriniformes. In this paper we briefly discuss the generalbiodiversity of cypriniforms in Borneo, including recent revisions to the classification of the order through theCypriniformes Tree of Life and Planetary Biodiversity Inventory efforts supported by the USA NSF basic scienceinitiatives, in conjunction with researchers in countries of Borneo. It is our hope that this particular summary willgalvanize individuals to increase worldwide collaborative and integrated efforts on the biodiversity of Cypriniformes, and incite lively discussions among a broad array of interested parties, including those involved in the recent and critically important “Heart of Borneo” initiative funded by all these countries and some NGOs.
