Abstract:
A high temporal resolution pollen diagram from a lake in the middle-Arctic region of the Boothia Peninsula, Nunavut, Canada, documents the history of the regional vegetation and climate for the past 7200 years. A diatom sequence had been previously prepared from this core. Major tundra pollen taxa in the core include Cyperaceae and Salix, with Cyperaceae comprising over 50% of the pollen in the early and late Holocene. Tree pollen, transported from far to the south, comprised a large percentage of the pollen sum, with Pinus accounting for 30% of the pollen in some levels of the core. Pollen percentages and concentrations of taxa typical of the middle-Arctic were highest in the mid-Holocene, corresponding to warm conditions. Decreasing pollen concentrations indicate cooling temperatures, with more rapid decreases occurring around 4200, 3800-3400, and 2500 cal yr BP. Pollen percentages of Salix, Cyperaceae, and Artemisia increased in the past 35 years in response to global warming. Reconstructions of July temperature using the modern analog technique showed the mid-Holocene (5800-2800 cal yr BP) was approximately 1°C higher than during the past 1000 years.

Abstract:

As a part of a more extensive project of developing a new finishing line at the Bolivian door manufacturer Tecno Carpinteria San Pedro this thesis presents the development process for a special designed spray booth. The thesis covers every phase from a product idea to a final concept design.

Working with finishing of furniture and other wooden products can effect the workers health in a negative way and damage the environment. The final result of the manufactured door is also depending on the how well the ventilation system in the working area is. Because of these reasons it is important to use safety equipment and a good ventilation system in the working area. As a part of this new finishing line San Pedro is in need of a special designed spray booth to control the spread of paint particles and other hazard substances that is a result of the finishing process.

Together with the consultant firm CADEFOR a spray booth is designed and a proposal design is presented in this thesis. The result is a design built up with a dry filter solution together with an extractor that creates a cross draft airflow towards the rear part of the spray booth. The result of the project together with some recommendations of increasing the capacity in the finishing line are also presented.

Notwithstanding the complex advances in optical technologies, there are still no artificial light sources capable of adequately simulating the natural daylight. Reaching such a lighting standard will represent a reduction of the production costs, in view of the rework caused by not so reliable visual evaluations, and of the commercial conflicts related to products that have colour as one of their control characteristics, such as textile, graphics and merchandising articles. The present Master degree metrology research is related to the metrological evaluation of the lighting sources and light booths available in the market (commercially available), and to their conformity to the technical specifications standards, aiming to stimulate the introduction of technological innovation to new industrial developments eligible to enhance the performance of these apparatus. The research has also contributed to the development of a diagnosis of the collection of the existing technical standards applied to the standardisation of lighting systems; to the investigation of fluorescent lamps generally used as daylight simulators, and to the metrological evaluation of light booths available in the market (commercially available). Particularly, analyses were done with a highly precise spectroradiometric system that uses a double monochromator with capacity for beam dispersion of 2 nm/mm. Tests and analyses on repeatability and reproducibility made with the spectroradiometric measurement system let to quantify the variety associated with each manufactured set of daylight simulators, commercialised as fluorescent lamps available at the local market. Having the spectral distribution determined throughout the axis of the studied lighting sources (lamps) it was possible to develop an analysis of the impact caused at the lighting uniformity obtained for industrial light booths, and so, specifying a distinctive factor technically and commercially interesting. The research revealed that, when evaluated considering the international practices and standards, none of the daylight simulators tested achieved the minimum requirement indicated for the visual comparison of colours. In addition, measurements were done to verify the influence of the light booths building pieces at the power spectral distribution within the evaluation area. Based on 1578 measurements done at laboratorial conditions simulating industrial environment, the research proves that changes in the building characteristics of the light booths produce an impact at the result of the power spectral distribution classification, creating, thus, a smooth condition for the attendance of the standards specifications, even when using low-cost fluorescents lamps available in the market.

Booth, Eric Jason. "Progress and Challenges in Non-Linear Constitutive Modeling for Composite Material." Thesis, Montana State University, 2007. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2007/booth/BoothE0507.pdf.

Abstract:
In this paper is outlined a technique for determining the non-linear constitutive properties of an orthrotropic laminated material such as a fiber reinforced composite. The Characterization of Composites is difficult because of the anisotropic stiffness properties of the material and also because of the complex manner in which they accumulate internal damage and eventually fail. Presented here are techniques for determining the mechanical properties of a material by solving what is known as the Inverse Problem. In such a problem, the response of a material system to an external stimulus is measured, then, this information is used to divine the corresponding material properties of that system. Progress in solving the Inverse Problem for Non-Linear Material Properties is presented as well as challenges that remain.

Kincaid, Deirdre Lindsay. "Rough magic : the theatrical life of John Wilkes Booth." Thesis, University of Hull, 2000. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:4641.

Full text
Abstract:
When John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln in Ford's Theatre in Washington on the evening of April 14,1865, he destroyed any possibility that his reputation as an actor would be dispassionately assessed for the foreseeable future. A bitter, fratricidal war was drawing to its close, and Northern newspapers were not interested in being fair; opprobrium was heaped on Booth's name, beginning in the press the following day. Twelve days later he was dead, shot during an attempted arrest. In 1890, his fellow player Clara Morris asserted hopefully, ‘At this late day the country can afford to deal justly with John Wilkes Booth.’ That time had not yet come: in fact, some of the worst -- and silliest -- slanders have been perpetrated in the twentieth century. But surely now, over a hundred years later, it should be possible to set aside that April evening and look dispassionately at Booth's career in the theatre of his time. As well as extending simple justice to a man who seems to have been extremely likeable and idealistic, and an actor interesting enough to deserve study, such a reassessment may serve to correct a distortion which the 'mythologized' view of his career has created: the idea that Edwin Booth was the only promising young tragedian in the early 1860s, which falsifies both Edwin's career and the period in general. Moreover, John's entire career covered a mere ten years, and his four full seasons as a star occurred during the Civil War, an under-researched period. The necessary concentration on so brief a time-span allows a more detailed treatment than would be possible in examining a career of average length, which may in turn illuminate some broader aspects of American theatre during an unsettled and transitional period.

Abstract:
Abstract   Fairs already existed as a phenomenon in the Middle Ages and has since then been used as a channel for sales and marketing. Today, companies and organizations compete to get the attention of visitors by creating attractive displays with the winning concept that will attract people and get them to put the company name to memory.   This is what Karlstad University had in mind when they designed the specification for this project. The background to this project is that the University is represented on a number of exhibitions each year, around the country. The mission has thus been to develop a new concept with an associated design at the university's stand. The goal of this project is not primarily to get visitors to apply for the university, but that they will remember it in any future consideration regarding further studies.   The project was developed using qualitative methodology. Interview manuals was designed to help identify what the communication department, student ambassadors and counselors thoughts of stand concept were. Based upon the information that these interviews showed, we created a template of key aspects to use  in making new material. In addition, the communication strategy of the university studied, and theories of marketing, branding, sensory marketing and places have been processed to create the best stand concept as possible.   The result created consists of a concept with accompanying printed materials. Printed matter produced includes a brochure, two sets of roll-ups and a display background. The final concept was a recurring summer theme based in the respondents' own associations and opinions, while it alludes to the University's main color that is yellow. The feeling this booth appearance should convey is that a visitor is outside Karlstad University in the summer. This feeling is reinforced by the stand's floor  that is a lawn that joins the display background image representing the university and the lawn beyond. Our assumption is that this represents something beyond a normal stand concept and thus etched in the visitors memory.

Abstract:
Indiana author Booth Tarkington laid the groundwork for understanding issues related to urban design and planning in the Midwest with a tandem of novels: The Magnificent Ambersons (1917), and The Midlander (1923). More importantly, evidence can be found to suggest that it is not only through knowledge and appreciation of tangible urban form, but also an appreciation and awareness of a culture, via its literature, that these issues of design and planning can be more fully understood by design professionals. The purpose of this study, then, is to discover the connections between studies in the field of landscape architecture (with regard to urban form and urban imageability) and the "literary landscapes" of Booth Tarkington. These connections will serve, first, to clarify and prioritize my study; second, to educate design professionals in an alternative way of understanding and tackling the physical issues of imageability in today's world; and third, to suggest to all designers the necessity for knowing, appreciating and utilizing the virtually infinite range of resources available to them.

LeBlanc, Michelle. "A diatom-based Holocene paleoenvironmental record from a lake on Boothia Peninsula, central mid-Arctic, Nunavut, Canada." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/6414.

Full text
Abstract:
An important source of information about climate change comes from sedimentary deposits from the arctic region. However, there are few lacustrine fossil records from the central mid Arctic region of Canada. A 485 cm sediment core, from a lake unofficially called JR01, Boothia Peninsula, Nunavut, yielded a high-resolution diatom record. Five radiocarbon dates provided the chronology. Three distinct zones are revealed in the relative percent abundance and diatom concentration diagrams. A more diverse and productive flora in the first zone implies warmer temperatures in the middle Holocene. A complete shift in diatom composition to a predominantly Fragilaria flora and a reduction in diversity and production suggests a cooler climate in this region after approximately 4360 years B.P. Smaller-scale climatic trends, such as the Little Ice Age (LIA) (ca. 550--150 yr. B.P.) and the Medieval Warm Period (ca. 1000--700 yr. B.P.), caused shifts in the diatom flora and production. Subtle shifts in floristic diversity within the LIA may reflect climate variability at a decadal scale. This variability is also recorded in other high-resolution paleoclimate records from the Arctic. A gradual shift to a more diverse and productive flora in the last 180 years B.P. (1790 years A.D.) suggests a response to the recent warming trend. This study permits us to address ambiguities with respect to the timing, the geographic extent and the severity of the recent warming. Changes in total diatom concentrations, magnetic susceptibility, organic and carbonate content may also reflect changes in the diatom assemblages and indicate shifts in vegetation, soil erosion, or in hydrology from the surrounding catchment. The morphological variance of Fragilaria and other taxonomy issues are also discussed.

Abstract:
Wayne Booth's neologism rhetorology, introduced in 1981, hasn't caught on in rhetorical scholarship. Nevertheless, in this essay I hope to revive rhetorology by harmonizing it with Paul Woodruff's work on reverence. I show how harmonizing these terms makes each more comprehensible. In order to illustrate how reverence and rhetorology might be made more practical I also analyze two arguments in the health care debate leading up to the passing of the Affordable Health Care for America Act in early 2010. Ultimately I hope to show that rhetorology is a reverent rhetorical practice, one that can help us restore a needed sense of communal reverence in contemporary democracy.

Abstract:
The social statistician, Charles Booth, the ministers of London's churches, chapels and missions, the thousands of churchwomen, and the working classes of London, all had one thing in common in 1900: their strong sense of insecurity. The unpublished notebooks of Charles Booth's “Religious Influences” archive, the third part of his influential inquiry Life and Labour of the People in London (1889-1903), tell us that in response to this insecurity all found stability in a moral-religious ideology. This is the first dissertation to employ this archive in its entirety. Booth employed this moral ideology to divide the metropolitan working class into respectable and unrespectable citizens. He recommended the authoritarian solution of the labour colony for the latter. Churchmen and women social workers constructed their own religious and scientific hybrid for social work among the poor, and women made an equally strict effort to divide needy from needy. Both religious scientist and scientific religionist called their ideology misleading names. Booth called his “scientific” social work. Churchmen and women called theirs a Christian ideology of love and brotherhood with the poor. In practice, both meant the moral segregation of poor people, specifically in the field of charity, and their ideology had evangelical roots. The great contribution of Booth's Life and Labour survey was to reveal that poor working people in the metropolis saw themselves not as a working class, nor as “rough” and “respectable” classes, but as part of a poor-but-respectable hierarchy. Their lives were characterized by a self-perpetuating round of social, economic and behavioural self-discipline on the one hand, and psychological and emotional release on the other. The extraordinary frankness of the private testimonies of over 1800 metropolitan personalities reveals to us a middle class obsessed with the moral segregation of working people, and – in contrast to much social history

Abstract:
This thesis undertakes a study of esotericism in the writings of Eva-Gore-Booth in order to generate insights into the approach to gender refracted in her literary output and illuminate the way in which recourse to esoteric, religious and philosophical traditions enabled her to negotiate the issue of sexual difference in a way that challenged its mainstream conceptualizations. The progression of proto-ecological concerns in Gore-Booth's literary and theological writing, and the ways in which such concerns are interwoven with her feminist advocacy of movement beyond male-female categorisation, are also examined . Through consideration of Gore-Booth's ekphrastic texts, the thesis explores Gore-Booth's philosophy of art, elucidating the esoteric underpinnings of her concept of art's origin and function. Her engagement with, and anxieties about, the issue of didactic ism and the political in art are also examined. The thesis also interrogates Gore-Baath's relationship to the Irish Literary Revival and evaluates the impact on her writing of the First World War and the Easter Rising of 1916, illuminating the accompanying shift toward Christian Mysticism and elucidating the contours of a spiritual feminism that produced ' ''the first major lrish feminist theological work": A Psychological and Poetic Approach to the Study of Christ in the fourth Gospel (1923). Through the application of interdisciplinary frameworks, this thesis aims to encourage scholarly interest in the writings of Gore-Booth across a range of disciplines by suggesting the relevance of her work to those working in areas such as gender studies, ecocriticism, body studies, theology, visual studies and translation studies.

Booth, Martin. "Combining games and speech recognition in a multilingual educational environment / M. Booth." Thesis, North-West University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/10607.

Full text
Abstract:
Playing has been part of people's lives since the beginning of time. However, play does not take place in silence (isolated from speech and sound). The games people play allow them to interact and to learn through experiences. Speech often forms an integral part of playing games. Video games also allow players to interact with a virtual world and learn through those experiences. Speech input has previously been explored as a way of interacting with a game, as talking is a natural way of communicating. By talking to a game, the experiences created during gameplay become more valuable, which in turn facilitates effective learning. In order to enable a game to “hear", some issues need to be considered. A game, that will serve as a platform for speech input, has to be developed. If the game will contain learning elements, expert knowledge regarding the learning content needs to be obtained. The game needs to communicate with a speech recognition system, which will recognise players' speech inputs. To understand the role of speech recognition in a game, players need to be tested while playing the game. The players' experiences and opinions can then be fed back into the development of speech recognition in educational games. This process was followed with six Financial Management students on the NWU Vaal Triangle campus. The students played FinMan, a game which teaches the fundamental concepts of the “Time value of money" principle. They played the game with the keyboard and mouse, as well as via speech commands. The students shared their experiences through a focus group discussion and by completing a questionnaire. Quantitative data was collected to back the students' experiences. The results show that, although the recognition accuracies and response times are important issues, speech recognition can play an essential part in educational games. By freeing learners to focus on the game content, speech recognition can make games more accessible and engaging, and consequently lead to more effective learning experiences.

Birch, Thomas. "The provenance and technology of Iron Age war booty from southern Scandinavia." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2013. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=210816.

Full text
Abstract:
Across southern Scandinavia are some 30 known weapon depositions made in former lakes from the Roman Iron Age (0-375 CE), seven of which are large-scale war booty sacrifices entailing material culture from whole defeated armies. The major weapon deposits contain spears, lances, shields, swords, knives and other militaria, representing a colossal sum of iron – at one site, some 6000 objects totalling 500kg of iron metal. This thesis presents an enquiry into the provenance of the iron used to make these weapons. The aim was to learn more about the origins of the armies through provenancing their weapons. Using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), as well as other analytical techniques, this study analysed 13 lances, a single spear and 10 knives from two of the main weapon deposits, and was able to demonstrate regional and subregional provenance hypotheses for each item. The results demonstrate that the iron used in weapon manufacture originated from across Scandinavia, notably Norway and Jutland. The sampled weapons were studied metallographically, showing the lances to be highly standardised weapon products made in a single workshop by distinguished crafstpeople. The knives reflect a diverse range of construction methods associated with localised non-specialist manufacture. The results were used to support an existing 'band of brothers' theory, instigating that the armies were made up of individuals from across Scandinavia (represented by their personal items) who were issued standardised war gear as part of a larger collective force. In order to provenance the iron weapons, it was necessary to develop a robust analytical method. This involved studying the behaviour of trace elements in experimental smelting systems to improve the existing methodology by further validation and refinement. The results from the method development are deemed to be a significant step in iron provenance studies in archaeology.

The goal of this project was to create a mobile structure in which a suite of paintings could be transported and viewed. When the structure and paintings are arranged as an "installation," they will create a more active role for a "viewer" who could then be defined as a "participant." The participant would be involved in the assembly of the environment and would find more opportunities for interaction in the assembled environment than he or she would in a traditional gallery or museum setting. A description and explanation of the processes involved in the creation of this project is preceded by a discussion of different historical, cultural, and methodological ways by which artwork is or has been presented. Also referenced are different artists and philosophies that informed this project.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the development of the gay rights movement in Louisiana. It begins by exploring both the homophile era and the liberation era in Louisiana, and how members of the LGBTQ community during these periods created safe spaces for themselves. I focus on two groups, the Louisiana Electorate of Gays and Lesbians (LEGAL) and the Louisiana Gay Political Action Caucus (LAGPAC), throughout the remainder of the work and how members of these organizations shaped the LGBTQ community by fighting for legislative protections and civil rights. I examine how gay rights activists negotiated the terms and parameters of identities like "gay" and "lesbian" in the context of political action, and how these identities remain relevant for the community today. Throughout the work, I argue that members of organizations like LAGPAC and LEGAL were more reactive than proactive when advocating for legislative protections for Louisiana’s LGBTQ community. To reach this conclusion, I use primary source collections of both LEGAL and LAGPAC, as well as various local periodicals to show how members of these organizations and members of the press disseminated information regarding the fight for gay civil rights to the LGBTQ community and the general public.

Abstract:
Internet-based celebrity gossip blog site, TMZ, is a growing cultural force. Employing critical rhetorical analytics, the author examines the TMZ coverage of Chris Brown's assault on his then-girlfriend, Rihanna. This project explicates TMZ's enthymematic invocation of dominant cultural ideologies surrounding race, sex, and domestic violence. Chapter 1 demonstrates the theoretical importance of both celebrities and gossip blogs, signaling the ideological importance of each. Chapter 2 critiques TMZ's reliance on historic myths regarding sex and race in their reporting on this case. Chapter 3 analyzes TMZ's humorous and affective strategies that bolster broader investments in colorblind ideologies. Chapter 4 concludes by examining the interplay of formal rhetorical elements that inform the project's findings. This research reveals that TMZ utilizes affective, enthymematic strategies that camouflage broader racist and sexist ideological impulses that perpetuate domestic violence myths.

The professional auto body painter works in an extreme environment, where the painter faces constant movement, ever-changing working situations and pressure to deliver a flawless paint job: the paint booth. The temperature in the paint booth is high, often around 30˚ Celsius. The floor is very hard, made of metal grid or concrete, and the painter usually has to move around a lot, at least 9 km per day. For this project I chose to focus on the painter’s work footwear as a major part of the personal protective equipment. My goal is to create a new standard in working shoes, specifically made for this environment and context. A comfortable shoe that could withstand heat, paint dust and wear. A shoe that is made for its users: the FRM AIRCON.

Abstract:
This thesis sets out to evaluate the role of consumer spaces in twentieth-century daily life. It is not concerned with the act of consumption but rather with the ways in which the social, cultural and educative role of the retail spaces is used as a marketing tool. The links that have been established between civic and commercial space over the last three hundred years are charted in order to locate the reasoning behind the growing tendency to design shopping malls as social and cultural spaces in the twentieth century. Three principal benefits to developers of the retails spaces from the promotion of consumer spaces as public spaces are identified in the thesis. First, links between the public and commercial developed to encourage potential customers into a particular retail space as opposed to its competition. Second, consumer spaces are developed as social and leisure spaces to encourage consumer loyalty. That is, they are developed as a means of encouraging repeat visits. Third, they are developed as a tactic to keep potential shoppers in the retail space for a longer duration. The logic behind this strategy being the more time spent in a consumer space the more goods purchased. The origins of this merchandising practice are traced back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries well before the advent of the department store form. The thesis located a number of strategies developed in the seventeenth century by tradesmen and merchants to sell their wares. At this time, it is evident that the consumer space was opened up to the public who were encouraged to enter without the obligation to purchase. Further, it is evident that, by the eighteenth century, shopkeepers and manufacturers' workshops included showrooms where potential customers could sit and take tea. Public spaces were also designed within the retail space so that potential customers could see and be seen. British shopkeepers often linked the retail space with the social practice of promenading by strategically situating their premises in an already established thoroughfare or site used for promenading. By the late eighteenth century, consumer spaces housed entertainment facilities such as art galleries, exhibitions and lounging rooms. After tracing the development of this merchandising strategy to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the links that can be made between twentieth-century consumer spaces is examined. In addition, the early developments of shopping centres in the 1940s and 1950s are surveyed and their developmental logic and merchandising strategies are compared with more recent forms of shopping malls developed from the 1970s and 1980s.

Abstract:

This study investigates how two major groups of forest pests in North America, defoliating insects and bark beetles, influenced subsequent wildfire severity in the Booth and Bear Complex Fires. A secondary goal is to ascertain whether high-resolution plot-based vegetation data are better predictors of fire severity than lower resolution historical vegetation data. General Additive Models were used with an information-theoretic approach to determine the importance of forest insect outbreaks as predictors of fire severity. The models indicate that pest outbreaks were not significant predictors of fire severity and that high-resolution plot-based vegetation data are not superior to lower resolution historical vegetation data. Elevation and weather conditions were the most important controls of severity, while low-resolution vegetation data, slope and topographic position were of secondary importance. These results suggest defoliating insect outbreaks do not appreciably increase fire severity, though this finding should be verified in the context provided by other fires.

Full text
Abstract:
London and its poorest inhabitants, the residuum, became pivotal in the development of the thought of both William Booth and Karl Marx. Each was to identify the residuum as a potential army of the poor. The London residuum's impact came from its size and the level and duration of poverty suffered. Booth and Marx were among many people who would search for a solution to the problem of the poverty of London's underclass. William Booth had been marked by the poverty he saw in his youth in Nottingham and was profoundly affected by the suffering of the London residuum. His interaction with this underclass was instrumental in the form his organisation, the Salvation Army, would take. The two crucial dates were 1865, when the size of the residuum led him to leave an itinerant evangelical ministry and remain in the East End of London, and 1890, when the intractability of the poverty of the submerged tenth caused Booth to publicise the problem and institutionalise his organisation's response. Karl Marx had first been drawn to the study of economics by the plight of the poor in the Moselle region of his native Germany. It was London's residuum, its size the result of the development of capitalism, that caused Marx to recognise that its members were the necessary victims of capitalism's advance. In the size of London's surplus population he also recognised its complexity, with the reserve army of labour an economic condition for, and the lumpenproletariat a consequence of, capitalism. Booth's organisation and Marx's economic theory began in their early encounters with poverty and were shaped in interaction with the London residuum, as each recognised that much of the suffering was caused by the working of laissez-faire capitalism and that its total solution required a challenge to the existing economic system.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Multiplication is an important part of real-time system applications. Various hardware parallel multipliers used in such applications have been proposed. However, when the operand sizes of the multipliers and the process technology need to be changed, the existing multipliers have to be redesigned.

From the point of library cell reuse, this master thesis work aims at developing a module generator for parallel multipliers with the help of software programs. This generator can be used to create the gate-level schematic for fixed point two's complement number multipliers. Based on the generated schematic, the entire multiplier can be implemented by small manual intervention. This feature can reduce the time of chip design.

The design phases consist of the logic, circuit and physical designs. The logic design includes gate-level schematic generation with C and SKILL programs and structural VHDL-code descriptions as well as validation. The circuit and physical design are custom in Cadence and the routing uses automatic place and route tools.

To demonstrate the design method, an 18 by 18-bit modified Booth recoded multiplier was implemented in 0.18 µm CMOS process with a supply voltage of 1.2 V and simulated using simulator (Spectre). The number of integrated transistors is 13000 and the active area is 85000 µm2. The postlayout simulation shows the critical path with a delay of 17 ns.

Wentland, Jocelyn J. "Not-so-casual Sex: Definitions and Scripts for Modern Sexual Relationships." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/31027.

Full text
Abstract:
Casual sexual relationships are common forms of modern sexual relationships. Researchers are paying increased attention to these relationship types, but have been remiss in ensuring that the definitions of the relationships under investigation match participants’ conceptualizations. Thus, the purpose of this dissertation is to determine whether definitions and behavioural scripts for casual sexual relationships can be identified. In Study 1, 23 young adults discussed initiation, maintenance, and termination components of various casual sexual relationships in focus groups and developed consensus definitions for each relationship. Each focus group independently identified four casual sexual relationships: One Night Stand, Booty Call, Fuck Buddies, and Friends with Benefits. These four relationships were the focus of subsequent exploration. Building on the qualitative descriptions created in the focus groups, an online survey was used to determine whether relationship definitions and associated script behaviours could be confirmed in a larger sample (N = 885). In Study 2, a restricted age subsample (i.e., 18-29 years) was used to determine if emerging adults endorsed the proposed definitions. A majority of the sample endorsed the definitions for One Night Stand (96%), Booty Call (93%), Fuck Buddies (83%), and Friends with Benefits (87%). A larger proportion of individuals with sexual intercourse experience endorsed the definitions compared to those without sexual intercourse experience, while previous casual sex experience did not affect definition endorsements. Women demonstrated greater precision in identifying the definitions. In Study 3, the full sample of 885 participants was used to identify the specific script behaviours associated with each relationship. Using behaviourally descriptive items (N = 62) derived from Study 1, participants identified 12 script items for One Night Stand, Booty Call, and Friends with Benefits and 10 script items for Fuck Buddies. Individuals with previous sexual intercourse experience were more adept at identifying the specific behavioural script items, while previous casual sex experience did not affect script endorsements. Again, women were particularly adept at identifying the specific script items. Overall, these findings suggest that specific definitions and respective scripts exist for the One Night Stand, Booty Call, Fuck Buddies, and Friends with Benefits relationships. This knowledge appears broad and may be considered as socio-cultural knowledge of young adults. Numerous implications flow from the understanding that young adults implicitly know what behaviours are associated with these popular forms of casual sexual relationships. Researchers need to ensure they use scientifically sound definitions in order to develop a more sophisticated lexicon of (casual sex) relationships and understand how modern sexual relationships fit within the scope of potential relationship options.

Morgan, Kenneth J. "Design and Analysis of Four Architectures for FPGA-Based Cellular Computing." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35578.

Full text
Abstract:
The computational abilities of today's parallel supercomputers are often quite impressive, but these machines can be impractical for some researchers due to prohibitive costs and limited availability. These researchers might be better served by a more personal solution such as a "hardware acceleration" peripheral for a PC. FPGAs are the ideal device for the task: their configurability allows a problem to be translated directly into hardware, and their reconfigurability allows the same chip to be reprogrammed for a different problem.

Efficient FPGA computation of parallel problems calls for cellular computing, which uses an array of independent, locally connected processing elements, or cells, that compute a problem in parallel. The architecture of the computing cells determines the performance of the FPGA-based computer in terms of the cell density possible and the speedup over conventional single-processor computation.

This thesis presents the design and performance results of four computing-cell architectures. MULTIPLE performs all operations in one cycle, which takes the least amount of time but requires the most chip area. BIT performs all operations bit-serially, which takes a long time but allows a large cell density. The two other architectures, SINGLE and BOOTH, lie within these two extremes of the area/time spectrum.

The performance results show that MULTIPLE provides the greatest speedup over common calculation software, but its usefulness is limited by its small cell density. Thus, the best architecture for a particular problem depends on the number of computing cells required. The results also show that with further research, next-generation FPGAs can be expected to accelerate single-processor computations as much as 22,000 times.

The research object of this dissertation is to analyze, from the relational sociology of Pierre Bourdieu, how the discourse adopted by business schools (FGV-EAESP and Chicago Booth) contribute to the consolidation of dominant beliefs in the field of Administration, and for what reason these discourses are able to sensitize students, mostly from a fraction of the elite of the State of São Paulo in Brazil. In this way, I seek to bring elements of empirical research developed both in Brazil and in the USA, in order to draw comparisons between the discourses and the beliefs disseminated by these schools. Thus, the study presented here shows that, apart from the fact that such institutions are formed by agents from an educational and economic elite, located mainly in the state of São Paulo, one must consider to what extent the professional position and the networks of which these agents participate are able to create and disseminate hegemonic beliefs both in the markets and in the formulation of ideas and scientific theories in the field of Administration and Economics.

Abstract: The research object of this dissertation is to analyze, from the relational sociology of Pierre Bourdieu, how the discourse adopted by business schools (FGV-EAESP and Chicago Booth) contribute to the consolidation of dominant beliefs in the field of Administration, and for what reason these discourses are able to sensitize students, mostly from a fraction of the elite of the State of São Paulo in Brazil.

Ras, Tasleem. "An audit of geriatric stroke rehabilitation services at a post-acute hospital (Booth Memorial) in urban Cape Town, South Africa." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/12604.

Abstract:
Includes summary.
Booth Memorial Hospital (BMH), situated at the foot of Table Mountain in urban Cape Town, South Africa, is an NGO-run hospital in a Public- Private Partnership with the Western Cape Department of Health. The essential service being offered is sub-acute health care, with state hospitals referring patients needing terminal, rehabilitation or convalescent care for a variety of illnesses. Post-acute stroke rehabilitation forms an integral part of the general service being offered by BMH. This dovetails with the state-run rehabilitation hospital in the sense that younger patients able to undergo intense rehabilitation are sent to the state-run hospital, while BMH generally cares for those patients who may not be able to withstand the rigours of an intense rehabilitation program. In our setting, this means that most of the patients seen at BMH for post-stroke rehabilitation are elderly. The elderly patient who has suffered a stroke is vulnerable in many respects. The most obvious vulnerability refers to the physical, emotional and psychological derangements that follow strokes in this age group. In addition, due to rampant poverty prevalent in the community we serve, social and economic factors place this group of patients at an even greater disadvantage. It is an imperative for social survival and an acceptable quality of life that this group of patients retain as much of their independence and empowerment after the stroke as is possible. The current situation of overflowing old-age homes, increasing prevalence of elder abuse and neglect, and the deficiency of community structures to care for the elderly compel health care providers to ensure that a post-stroke rehabilitation service operates with maximal efficiency, given the paucity of resources endemic in our health system. The above factors provided an impetus for this study. A need arose to assess the quality of the stroke rehabilitation services at BMH, as the starting point to what is hoped will be a continuous Quality Improvement Cycle. An additional factor compelling the examination of the quality of service being offered is that the Geriatric population is underserved in the present health system, competing for scarce resources with other vulnerable groups such as children, Cancer patients, and people living with HIV/AIDS. By focussing on a service that is almost exclusively aimed at the elderly, we hope to be able to advocate for greater resource allocation to this age group, given that receiving good health care is essential to the quality of life of the ageing population. This assessment of the current services looked at the Structure, Process of care and Clinical Outcomes of stroke rehabilitation services being given to patients over the age of 65 years. The findings were evaluated against internationally accepted norms of post-acute stroke care, and are presented in this study.

Abstract:

Zircon and monazite U–Pb isotope geochronology combined with structural mapping in the Mt Boothby region in the central Aileron Province in Central Australia has constrained the timing of two tectonically distinct phases of high-grade deformation and metamorphism. The first event (D1/M1) occurred at around 1790 Ma and was associated with the emplacement of a bimodal magmatic suite that underwent high-grade deformation prior to the emplacement of voluminous granite also at around 1790 Ma. The timing of D1/M1 coincides with the early stages of the Yambah Event, which is widely recognised in the southern Aileron Province, but has not previously been unequivocally shown to be associated with deformation . Subsequent pervasive reworking occurred over the interval 1600-1570 Ma, and was associated with long-lived granulite-grade metamorphism. The timing of this event coincides with the Chewings Orogeny which largely shaped the tectonic geology further west in the Reynolds and Anmatjira Ranges. During the Chewings Orogeny the c.1790 Ma D1 structures were transposed into a composite S1/S2 fabric. Map scale F2 folding is interpreted to have a shallow plunge suggesting that the S1 fabric may have originally been shallow dipping, raising the possibility that deformation was extensional in nature, and coeval with deposition of the nearby Reynolds Range Group which is constrained to the interval 1806-1785 Ma. Although inferred here to be Yambah aged, the timing constraints for D1 /M1 also overlap with the c. 1800 Ma Stafford Event which was associated with voluminous felsic magmatism, mafic magmatism and extreme geothermal gradient magmatism. This suggests that an extended period of extension, sedimentation, magmatism and deformation may have occurred at around 1800 Ma in the central Aileron Province.
