Abstract:
The development of the modern form of policing required a bureaucratic apparatus complete with rules and regulations prescribing police procedures. In spite of the organisational significance of police rule books and manuals, little is known about their origins and composition. Conflict between the Queensland Police Commissioner, W G Cahill (1905–16), and other senior criminal justice system personnel over the content and authorisation of a police rule book for Queensland suggests that the prescription of police practices and procedure was itself the outcome of longer-term changes in the organisation of policing; in particular of an increasing demand for police autonomy of other elements of the criminal justice system.

Abstract:
<p>Textbooks that are too difficult to read will decrease students’ motivation in learning, while textbooks that are too easy to read will make students less interested in reading them. Therefore, the readability analysis needs to be done so that the textbooks used as learning media are suitable for the students who become the target readers of the books. This study analyzes the texts in Junior High School English textbooks entitled “English in Focus” grades VII, VIII, and IX published by the Center of Book Archieve of the Department of National Education by using cloze procedure. The tests were carried out in SMPN 1 Gunungputri and SMP Sejahtera 2 Cileungsi, involving students in grades VII, VIII, and IX. The texts tested were adapted to their grade levels. The tests were made in the form of 100 words which were then omitted at every 5th word. The readability results of “English in Focus” textbook are that not all texts in the book are suitable for students who use it. If the books are considered as suitable teaching material, these books need some changes because there are 6 texts from the total of 24 texts that are considered too difficult for students.</p><p>Keywords: textbook assessment, readability, cloze procedure</p>

Abstract:
The research aimed to analyze Frankl's book "What is not written in my books". The latter is considered the most important self-biographical material by this author, considering that it's relevant to understand to which extent his life and work are related. The research corpus has been processed through the R Interface for Multidimensional Analysis of Texts and Questionnaires (IRAMUTEQ) software through the procedure of similarity analysis and word cloud. Thus, the most frequent words were "say" and "do", which, by the same token, formed two structures of meaning. The analysis procedures revealed an existential coherence between the life and the work of the author, which helped to expand the understanding on the meaning of life of Viktor Frankl.

What a difference a good textbook would have made twenty years ago, when the first judges embarked upon the adventure of creating a new international criminal procedure. Of course, back then there was little to draw upon other than domestic criminal systems. Fast forward twenty years, and a series of international(ized) criminal tribunals and courts have created a rich and sprawling body of international criminal procedural law. So rich, in fact, that it threatens to overwhelm the practitioner or scholar struggling to make sure that he or she has not overlooked anything important. So the recent series of books devoted to the topic of international criminal procedure is welcome indeed. The present book review surveys and compares four of these volumes.

Abstract:
Translating economic terms is a challenging task since the translator needs to understand economics and be able to convey the concepts to the target language. In translating economic books for lay readers, the translator also needs to consider the lexical choice so that the target readers can understand the translation easily. This study aims to analyze the translation procedures applied in the translation of economic terms in the book The Psychology of Money written by Morgan Housel and to find out whether the translation is oriented to the source language or the target language. The data in this study were analyzed qualitatively by using the taxonomy of translation procedures by Vinay and Darbelnet. The results showed that there were seven translation procedures applied in the translation of economic terms: borrowing, calque, literal translation, a combination of borrowing and literal translation, transposition, equivalence, and combination of transposition and borrowing. The literal translation is the most dominant translation procedure applied to translate economic terms. Based on the analysis of the translation procedures, it can be concluded that the translation of economic terms in this study is oriented to the source language.

Abstract:
The last two decades have witnessed a boom in self-help materials in both global and local markets. This self-help trend, growing rapidly in our modern day, should be an area of interest for Translation Studies as an increasing number of self-help materials have been translated particularly from English every year. Self-help books involve a great deal of references to the material and social culture of the original country. One of the key issues in the translation of self-help books is the choice between foreignizing and domesticating these culture-specific items. This paper aims to discuss the procedures used for the translation of culture-specific items with regard to the particular function that these books assume in the target society. The analysis on the example of Outliers, a self-help book of sorts written by Malcolm Gladwell, has shown that the translator mostly adopted foreignizing strategies in translating the text into Turkish. The study also discusses whether these foreignizing strategies contribute to the fulfillment of target-text function, which is to provide quick-fix remedies to people struggling with modern-day challenges and demands.

Abstract:
A Review of: Waugh, M., Donlin, M., & Braunstein, S. (2015). Next-generation collection management: A case study of quality control and weeding e-books in an academic library. Collection Management, 40(1), 17-26. http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/01462679.2014.965864 Abstract Objective – To describe and advocate for the development of a procedure to discard electronic books from an academic library collection. Design – Case study. Setting – Academic library in the United States of America. Subjects – 514 electronic books purchased from NetLibrary, a subset of 52,000 NetLibrary titles collected by the investigating library 2001-2007. Methods – The researchers examined a set of 514 electronic books in the health sciences and medical field, specifically for qualities such as currency and content relevance. An anecdotal case with limited validity, the goal was to articulate why a particular set of electronic books failed to meet the investigating library’s collection standards, and to remove these e-books. Main Results – A set of 514 e-books published by ICON Health Publications were found to be mass-produced, and displayed other notable problems, including age over seven years, outdated or irrelevant content, quality issues, and inclusion in an older platform no longer favored for e-books. The ICON Health e-books were removed from the library collection and, with some difficulty, the items were also removed from the vendor platform. The authors recommended an e-book weeding procedure that considers six potential problems: publication date; inclusion of defunct Internet links; mass production; low quality works by the same authors or publishers; e-book packages that appear to feature multiple low quality works; and e-books from early packages, which may have integration problems. Conclusion – Electronic books may take up little physical space but libraries should not ignore them when making deselection decisions because their content may be inappropriate for a library or for the disciplines the library serves. The ICON Health Publications e-book package is an egregious example of low-quality e-book content that the authors discovered and subsequently removed from their collection, offering a set of recommendations based on the experience.

Abstract: This study aims to determine the method of ḥisāb early in the lunar month in the book Tasḥīl al-Mithāl by Uzal Syahruna and assess its advantages and disadvantages compared to the same process in other books. It is undeniable that the dichotomization between the existence of classical ḥisāb books and contemporary ḥisāb books with the beginning to fade in people's belief in the results occurred in Falak Science. Through literature study and interviews, this paper finds that the method of determining the beginning of the lunar month in the book falls into the ḥisāb ḥaqīqī bi taḥqīq category. The theory and calculation system are based on modern astronomical formulas (spherical trigonometry), using calculators and computational programs. The advantage of this book is that it establishes its procedures on current astronomical formulas, the output of ḥisāb is not much different from other ḥaqīqī bi taḥqīq books. Simultaneously, the weakness is that it still uses unlimited astronomical data as a basis. Some have not been corrected, especially for determining irtifā 'al-hilāl and hilāl mar'i corrections.

Abstract:
Library is a primary supporting facility in any level of education spanning from elementary school, middle school and higher education i.e., university. The main aim of library is providing facility in which it can improve educational quality and allow the member to advance their knowledge from various reference sources. Managing book circulation is a crucial aspect for library in which it further increases effectivity for its business process such as returning and borrowing books. However, Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) Negeri Surakarta does not have any such application system which can help its library management, as a result the library member cannot obtain have updated information related to the library collection. Currently, the school relies on manual procedure where the library staff records borrowing and returning books activities in a certain book log. Unfortunately, the manual procedure causes missing data and data consistency in the recording book. Therefore, research aim to design and build e-library. The e-library is a web-based information system that has specific features that can address the school problems. To realize objective, we adopt waterfall software development method to build the information system. We also evaluate our design by using black box testing to ensure its functionality. Results show that our developed system works as it is designed and can handle any request from user without causing any errors.

The analysis of translation the procedure was based on a theory proposed by Newmark (1988) by which eighteen procedures are mentioned. Moreover, this study applied a descriptive qualitative approach. In collecting data, this study applied an observation method by reading Clinical Biochemistry and its translation Biokimia Klinis comprehensively to collect the required data i.e. the medical terms and their translation. Furthermore, this study applied descriptive qualitative method in terms of analyzing data. The method was implemented by providing an explanation of the translation procedures. Moreover, the formal and informal methods were implemented in presenting the data. The formal method is indicated by the use of the table where the term and its translation were placed and differed into SL and TL. The informal method refers to the use of a descriptive explanation regarding the translation procedure. After the identification process, it was found some procedures were applied, i.e. transference, naturalization, literal, and descriptive equivalent. The dominant procedure applied was literal procedure. The contrary, descriptive equivalent was the least applied procedure. Based on the result, it can be confirmed that there was an attempt by translator in maintaining the SL words rather than considering TL words as the translation.

Abstract:
Books are often the targets of anti-intellectual censorship efforts in schools for two reasons. First, they are integral to the process and practice of reading, which is how people encounter new ideas. Second, the coercive nature of curriculum means that students must read books with controversial ideas. Emily Knox argues that the people who challenge books believe strongly in the power of books, and it is this belief that motivates their actions. To combat these efforts, educators must have in place robust policies and procedures for choosing and defending curriculum materials, directly name anti-intellectualism as a threat to education, and avoid treating any single book as presenting a complete and absolute version of the truth.

Abstract:
Tactile books for blind children generally contain tactile illustrations referring to a visual world that can be difficult to understand. This study investigates an innovative way to present content to be explored by touch. Following embodied approaches and evidence about the advantages of manipulations in tactile processing, we examined 3D miniatures that children explored using their middle and index fingers to simulate leg movements. This “Action simulations by finger gestures–ASFG” procedure has a symbolic relevance in the context of blindness. The aim of the present study was to show how the ASFG procedure facilitates the identification of objects by blind and sighted children. Experiment 1 examined the identification of 3D miniatures of action objects (e.g. the toboggan, trampoline) by 8 early blind and 15 sighted children, aged 7 to 12, who explored with the ASFG procedure. Results revealed that objects were very well identified by the two groups of children. Results confirmed hypotheses that ASFG procedures are relevant in the identification process regardless of the visual status of subjects. Experiment (control) 2 studied identification of tactile pictures of same action objects by 8 different early blind and 15 sighted children, aged 7 to 12. Results confirmed that almost all objects obtained lower recognition scores in tactile pictures than in 3D miniatures by both groups and showed surprisingly higher scores in blind children than in sighted children. Taken together, our study provides evidence of the contribution of sensorimotor simulation in the identification of objects by touch and brings innovative solutions in book design for blind people. Moreover, it means that only the ASFG procedure has a very inclusive potential to be relevant for a larger number of subjects, regardless of their visual skills.

This empirical study takes a cognitive perspective and examines the translation of metaphors in speeches by Chinese President Xi Jinping as collected in the first volume of the book The Governance of China published in 2014. The study draws upon Lakoff and Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory and Newmark's categories of translation procedure for metaphors. The researchers' data analysis has shown that (1) four out of the eight existing translation procedures for metaphors are employed in translating Xi's metaphors, and (2) while the use of one translation procedure reflects similar cognitive mapping conditions between the source and the target culture, the use of the other procedures does not always correlate with the similarities or differences in cognitive mappings between the two cultures in question. The research raises new inquiries regarding metaphor translation, and the researchers accordingly discuss the implications of their findings for metaphor translation pedagogy and future translation studies.

ABSTRACT A joint Canadian-United States exercise involving the intentional spilling of approximately 18,000 gallons of specially treated crude oil was conducted off Newfoundland in September 1987 to evaluate the containment and recovery capabilities of three state-of-the-art booms and skimmers. As part of the exercise, data were collected on a specially instrumented oil spill boom in an attempt to verify a proposed performance test procedure for open-ocean oil spill booms. A viscoelastic chemical additive was used, after the equipment evaluation was completed, to enhance recovery operations. Additional observations were made on the persistence of spilled oil slicks in advanced sea states. The containment and recovery effort was successful, despite winds and sea states commonly thought to be beyond existing capabilities.

Abstract:
AbstractThree copies of a book that had been optionally deacidified using two different procedures in 1967, and then subjected to accelerated aging, were tested again after 52 years of natural aging. Matched copies of the book Cooking the Greek Way, which had been printed in Czechoslovakia on acidic paper, were evaluated. Nonaqueous treatment of two of the copies with magnesium methoxide dissolved in chlorofluorocarbon solvent had been found in 1967 to have decreased the susceptibility to embrittlement, as evidenced by the results of the accelerated aging, followed by folding endurance tests. Retesting of the same books in 2019, after 52 years of room temperature storage, showed that the deacidification treatments had achieved the following benefits in comparison to the untreated book: (a) higher brightness; (b) higher folding endurance; (c) tensile breaking length higher in the cross-direction of the paper; (d) substantial alkaline reserve content, (e) an alkaline surface pH in the range 7.1–7.4, and (f) higher molecular mass of the cellulose. Remarkably, some of the folding endurance results matched those of unaged samples evaluated in 1967. Scanning electron micrographs showed no differences between the treated and untreated books.

This study aims to discuss the factors of increasing and decreasing faith in the book of al-Azhar interpretation. This study uses a qualitative research method with the type of library research (Library research) with the primary source in the form of the book of interpretation of al-Azhar by Buya Hamka and secondary sources in the form of books, theses, articles and other scientific works related to the title of this research and apply content analysis as follows. a tool to analyze the collected data so that it can be described in detail and systematically. The results and discussion of the research are that faith means believing with the heart, making a vow with the tongue and practicing with the limbs then the main cause of increasing faith is obedience to Allah and His Messenger as Buya Hamka's interpretation of Surah al-Imran verse 173 that strong faith is born when the focus of all memory is only on Allah, only hoping for His pleasure, and only fearing Him then the main cause of the decline of faith is being tempted by the devil's whispers as Buya Hamka's interpretation of surah al-Araf verse 16-17 that the devil or devil always tempts humans from four directions, namely front, back, right and left so that humans do bad deeds and the procedure for maintaining faith is to strengthen monotheism, always worship Allah, always carry out good deeds and stay away from bad deeds, seek religious knowledge (Islam), contemplate the signs His greatness and power, and protect the social environment. This study concludes that human faith in Allah, Allah's Angels, Allah's books, Prophets and Apostles, the Day of Judgment, and qada and qadar can increase and decrease but when faith falls, it must be strengthened again. This study recommends conducting in-depth research related to procedures for maintaining faith in Islamic teachings.

Abstract:
Purpose The contribution of children’s literature to the social-emotional development of children has been recognized across disciplines. Especially picture books, as multimodal texts which communicate with young readers with two codes simultaneously, can be a potential means of fostering empathy in young children (Nikolajeva, 2013). The purpose of this paper is to introduce the program “My BEST friends, the books,” an empirical project (in progress) based on a Book-Based Emotional Social Thinking approach. Design/methodology/approach This approach is inspired by the Critical Thinking and Book Time approach (Roche, 2010, 2015). The program, based on the scales and competences of the Βar-On (2006) model of social-emotional intelligence, explores the way young readers interpret social-emotional skills when discussing about literary characters in children’s picture books. This paper examines the philosophy, the main characteristics and structure of the program, and presents the first results of the pilot phase. Findings The initial findings indicate that the design and implementation of such a program is a complex procedure that requires from the researcher to take into consideration various aspects that concern both the material and the participants, but also to step back and let children express their thoughts freely. Originality/value Moreover, such discussions allow for understanding how preschoolers interpret the social-emotional skills of literary characters in a critical manner.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the body of knowledge on how research evaluation in different national and organisational contexts affects, often in unintended ways, research and publication practices. In particular, it looks at the development of book publication in the social sciences and humanities (SSH) in the Czech Republic since 2004, when a performance-based system of evaluation was introduced, up to the present. Design/methodology/approach The paper builds upon ethnographic research complemented by the analysis of Czech science policy documents, data available in the governmental database “Information Register of R&D results” and formal and informal interviews with expert evaluators and other stakeholders in the research system. It further draws on the authors’ own experience as scholars, who have also over the years participated in a number of evaluation procedures as peers and experts. Findings The number of books published by researchers in SSH based at Czech institutions has risen considerably in reaction to the pressure for productivity that is inscribed into the evaluation methodology and has resulted in the rise of in-house publishing by researchers’ own research institution, “fake internationalisation” using foreign low-quality presses as the publication venue, and the development of a culture of orphaned books that have no readers. Practical implications In the Czech Republic robust and internationally harmonised bibliometric data regarding books would definitely help to create a form of research evaluation that would stimulate meaningful scholarly book production. At the same time, better-resourced and better-designed peer review evaluation is needed. Originality/value This is the first attempt to analyse in detail the conditions and consequences the Czech performance-based research evaluation system has for SSH book publication. The paper demonstrates that often discussed harming of SSH and book-writing in particular by performance-based IF-centred research evaluation does not necessarily manifest in declining numbers of publications. On the contrary, the number of books published may increase at the cost of producing more texts of questionable scholarly quality.

This includes methodological or calculation procedures for dimensioning irrigation in an agricultural area. Therefore, the objective of this work is to establish a comprehensive methodology for the correct dimensioning of irrigation by reel machines with water distribution systems of the "gun" and "boom with emitters" type. Agronomic design is addressed as a fundamental part, and hydraulic design up to the necessary pressure in the hydrant. The relevant aspects in this procedure are that, formulations are included for the dimensioning of irrigation with water distribution systems of the “boom with emitters” type, and that correct values and criteria are used to support the methodology, because these come from authors and institutions of international prestige.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective We sought to understand the types of clinical processes, such as image and medication ordering, that are disrupted during electronic health record (EHR) downtime periods by analyzing the narratives of patient safety event report data. Materials and Methods From a database of 80 381 event reports, 76 reports were identified as explicitly describing a safety event associated with an EHR downtime period. These reports were analyzed and categorized based on a developed code book to identify the clinical processes that were impacted by downtime. We also examined whether downtime procedures were in place and followed. Results The reports were coded into categories related to their reported clinical process: Laboratory, Medication, Imaging, Registration, Patient Handoff, Documentation, History Viewing, Delay of Procedure, and General. A majority of reports (48.7%, n = 37) were associated with lab orders and results, followed by medication ordering and administration (14.5%, n = 11). Incidents commonly involved patient identification and communication of clinical information. A majority of reports (46%, n = 35) indicated that downtime procedures either were not followed or were not in place. Only 27.6% of incidents (n = 21) indicated that downtime procedures were successfully executed. Discussion Patient safety report data offer a lens into EHR downtime–related safety hazards. Important areas of risk during EHR downtime periods were patient identification and communication of clinical information; these should be a focus of downtime procedure planning to reduce safety hazards. Conclusion EHR downtime events pose patient safety hazards, and we highlight critical areas for downtime procedure improvement.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to discuss the possibilities of using a mobile application in the process of conducting an inventory of library collection and present an application for the same. The application scans barcode labels on books and retrieves data about those books. Data regarding the status and call number of each book can be changed using this application. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on a case study of developing an application for the Android platform, and this application is part of the BISIS library management system. Findings By analysing the procedure of conducting an inventory in the library of the Faculty of Science, University of Novi Sad, it is concluded that this procedure is tedious and can be simplified. To make this procedure more efficient, a mobile application enabling search and update of bibliographic records has been developed. That application communicates with the BISIS library management system using a specially designed service. Practical implications By introducing this application at the libraries, the process of inventory of a library collection can be simplified, the time needed for the inventory will be shorter and the inventory will require less physical effort. Originality/value The application is designed to help librarians during the process of inventory of library collections. During this process, librarians have to check status of every item on the shelves and to update catalogue with new information. This application enables mobility of librarians and updates information about items during checking the shelves.
