Abstract:
In his article in Psychoanalysis and History (2(2), 2000) Philip Kuhn proposes that, contrary to Freud's claims, his dream of Irma's injection occurred on 21 September 1895, and that it was not fully analysed until August 1899. He further asserts that this dream was used by Freud as a substitute for the dream that he felt compelled by Fliess to drop from the first draft of his book. The author finds no evidence to support Kuhn's claims but, on the contrary, demonstrates the insubstantial nature of the supporting argument and the imagined character of his ‘evidence’. The true chronology of Freud's writing of his dream book is mapped out, along with the effects of the deletion of his ‘big’ dream. It is argued that the publication of Kuhn's paper poses serious questions to academic journals dealing with the history of psychoanalysis about their policy on the standards of their published papers.

Ecology term has first been used in the translation study of Vahdet-i Mevcȗd Bir Tabî'at Âliminin Dini by Bahâ Tevfik and Ahmed Nebîl in 1911. The first period has been defined as the times between 1911 and 1965 when the first book has been published. The first doctorate level study has been accomplished by Asaf Irmak in Germany. The first lecture note for ecology has been written by Asaf Irmak in 1934. In 1934 “Toprak ilmi ve Ekoloji” lecture has been added to academic curriculum in higher educational institutes. The first academic department has been established in Faculty of Forestry as “Toprak ilmi ve Ekoloji Anabilim Dalı” in 1943. In the same faculty in 1950 the “Orman Ekolojisi” lecture has been given independently. The first book is assumed to be “Böcek Ökoloji ve Epidemiyolojisi” written by Akif Kansu. While in the initial years after 1911 the ecology term has been used in limited science branches, and after 50’s the terms and concepts related to ecology have been used more commonly. Between the years 1911-65 some translational studies have been encountered dealing with principal terms and concepts, sub-disciplines of ecology and ecosystems types. <p><em>Mora</em><em>l values undoubtedly play a significant role in human life. These values are not only in religious texts (such as Qur’an, Hadits, Old Testament, Bible, Book of Psalms) but also in literatures. One of the examples is lyrics of Rhoma Irama’s song from 1970s to 1980s. This is a library research using a content analysis approach. Meanwhile, this research utilizes semiotic and hermeneutic methods. The findings show that the lyrics of Rhoma Irama’s song during 1970-1980 contained some moral values which could be implemented in personal life, family, society and religious life. The important values contained in such songs are amanah (trustful), as-siddiq (truth, honesty), al-‘adl (justice), al-rahmah (love), al-ukhuwah (brotherhood) and tasamuh (tolerance). The aforementioned values refer to two Islamic primary sources that are relevant to all times, in the past, present and future.</em></p>

Full text
Abstract:
The accurate determination of gender of biological samples has valuable applications in medical and forensic investigations. Gender determination based on length variations in the X-Y homologous amelogenin gene, is part of most commercial multiplex DNA profiling kits. The first report of a failure of the amelogenin sex test was in 1998 when two normal males were typed as female. Subsequently, several amelogenin Y (AMELY) negative males have been reported. This study represents the first report of this phenomenon in the black South African population. This study determined the size of the Y-chromosome deletion that resulted in the failure of the amelogenin sex test in two black South African AMELY-negative males by typing specific DNA markers surrounding the amelogenin locus. Through deletion size and Y-chromosome microsatellite haplotypes, the relationship between the samples was investigated. The samples were sequenced at the amelogenin gene and typed for thirteen sites on the short arm of the Y-chromosome. In order to determine the Y-chromosome haplotypes, eleven Y-chromosome microsatellite markers were typed. These samples had the same size deletion of approximately 3 Mb. The Y-chromosome haplotypes indicated that these were probably independent events. The frequency of AMELY-negative males is rare in this population sample of 8,344 individuals, with a frequency of 0.065% in the black South African sample population. Notwithstanding, tests performed for detecting the presence of male DNA based on the presence of the amelogenin gene alone should be reconsidered, as this study confirms that these deletions do occur in the African population. The impact of the results generated in this study on the medical and forensic practise of DNA testing is significant.

Abstract:
Abstract Juno spots the Trojans as they are hardly out of sight of Sicily and sailing joyfully ( ‘laeti ‘) towards Italy, their ancestral home. The joy of the Trojans revives Juno ‘s undying wound ( ‘aeternum ... uul nus ‘) and memories of her impotence to overcome her mortal enemies, which are vented in a monologue. The reader knows from the proem that Juno ‘s ‘dolor ‘ (9) and her memory (4) interrelate; and in 7. 286 ff. the goddess ‘s ‘dolor ‘ is specifically linked with the joy of Aeneas ( ‘laetum ‘), her ,vound ( ‘fixa ‘), and again with memories of her past impotence vis-a-vis the Trojans. Finally, both the proem and lines 25-6 associate Juno ‘s ‘dolores ‘ with her Vrath ( ‘ira ‘). Thus, in the opening of the storm episode the reader is induced to associate Vound and ‘dolor ‘, the latter functioning as a physical symptom of the former, and Juno ‘s ‘dolor ‘ ,with the ‘laetitia ‘ of the Trojans.

Abstract:
This chapter outlines the key themes and concepts that will be at stake in the book. The Irish Revolution (c. 1913–23) has been the subject of a vast and growing historiography. Ambushes and assassinations by IRA guerrillas and reprisals and counter-reprisals by Crown forces have dominated much of the discourse. More recently, the ‘everyday’ acts of violence that characterised so much revolutionary activity in Ireland have found a place in the literature. This book adds to that understanding of experiences at the grass-roots level. In this chapter, some key parameters for the study are outlined and an ‘anatomy of violence’ is developed, ranging from the impersonal threat to the physical attack on the person, to frame and contextualize the nature of the activity under observation. This chapter also explores some precedents for violence and civilian behaviour in revolutionary Ireland found during nineteenth and early twentieth century agrarian agitation.

And he has also spent much time helping to prevent the most terrifying global emergency: nuclear war. In 1977, Dr. Helfand was inspired by a book that raised his awareness about threats posed by nuclear power, and soon afterward he learned that nuclear weapons posed even greater threats. Along with physicians Helen Caldicott and Eric Chivian, he resurrected Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), which had been founded in the early 1960s by a number of physicians, including Victor Sidel, Jack Geiger, and Bernard Lown, who wrote seminal articles about the devastating effects that nuclear weapon attacks would have on U.S. cities....

Abstract:
This chapter establishes the main issues to be explored in this book, including the dramatic transformation that Sinn Féin and the IRA underwent. It provides a critique of existing explanations, arguing that they mistakenly assume the politics of Sinn Féin is driven primarily by the military capacity of the IRA. Existing explanations also assume that interplay between the British state and Irish republicans led to their moderation, but these explanations neglect the wider institutional context in which republicans chose to change their strategy. In contrast, this chapter sets out the argument that sustained contact with, and inclusion in, key political processes, namely party politics and a consolidated framework of democratic institutions, extracted moderate concessions from republicans in a gradual and path-dependent process.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a summary of the main arguments and empirical evidence of the book. It re-emphasizes the argument that inclusion drove the process of moderation in a gradual and path dependent process. It also argues that moderation was strategic and involved extensive movement away from revolutionary violence towards working through the existing system and accepting reformism. However, it did not entail core value change or the abandonment of core goals. It provides an assessment of how republicans are pursuing their goal of a united Ireland in a post-peace process era, arguing that republicans have been largely ineffective in their efforts and are instead now relying on exogenous factors to advance their cause. It concludes by considering the implications of Irish republicanism for other cases of separatist conflict and for comparative peace processes. It argues that the pathway to moderation offered here highlights that moderation can occur when internal change within a movement is met with tolerance from the ruling state to allow that movement to politicise without abandoning core goals.

Abstract:
Abstract For Irish Republicans, informers occupy an almost mythical status. For centuries they have been blamed for setbacks in the struggle. James Joyce offered this explanation for the failure of Irish insurrections: ‘Simply because in Ireland, just at the crucial moment, an informer appears.’ Years after the 1998 Good Friday Agreement informers remain deeply hated figures; ‘I would rather be called a paedophile than an informer’, a former IRA member told the author. The ruthless killing of alleged informers became one of the IRA’s trademarks, yet this book, which uses the IRA as a case study to explore how underground groups deal with informers, argues that the IRA’s response to informers was far more complex than usually described, involving a wide range of forms and functions. This response included a variety of social control measures, was influenced and limited by the organisation’s political goals, served a wide range of aims beyond immediate security concerns and had widespread and long-term consequences. For example, the IRA often granted ‘amnesties’ to informers in order to expose them; ‘it’s like a strategy and counter-strategy and counter-counter-strategy, this whole tinker-tailor-soldier-spy world’, a former IRA leader explained. This introductory chapter presents the book’s research questions and demonstrates the gap in our current knowledge of the issues; provides a brief overview of the relevant literatures and explains the choice of the punishment and society perspective; details the sources for the study and the methods used; and provides an outline of the book’s chapters.

Abstract:
Abstract Chapter 2 focuses on the work of Derrick Sington, a hitherto under-discussed writer who is significant not least because his experiences at Belsen fuelled his concern with wider issues of the treatment of prisoners and the appropriateness (or, in his view, inappropriateness) of the death penalty. The 1957 book The Offenders: Society and Atrocious Crime, co-authored with journalist Giles Playfair, included a chapter by Sington arguing that Irma Grese, condemned to death at the Belsen Trial for her actions at Belsen and Auschwitz, should not have been hanged, and suggesting that social pressures could have affected her behaviour. The Offenders was published just as the 1957 Homicide Act introduced the defence of diminished responsibility into English and Welsh law, a measure that from Sington’s abolitionist perspective did not go far enough. In the chapter on Grese, Sington also revisited his earlier account of Belsen and attempted to contextualize his first, visceral response to what he saw there. Sington’s later writing therefore opens up the question of how the aftermath of the war crimes trials intersected with debates in Britain about the potential abolition of capital punishment and judicial and penal reform more generally, as well as reframing both Sington’s testimony at the Belsen Trial and his book Belsen Uncovered (1946).

Abstract:
Abstract Book 4 of the Annals, covering the years AD 23-8, traces the turning-point in the story of Tiberius’ reign. Tacitus prepares us for disaster from the start. After a reference to Jortuna in suitably Sallustian language (1. 1 repente turbare Jortuna coepit, saeuire ipse, cf. Sall. C. IO. 1) and the deum ira in rem Romanam (1. 2), we are told that the year AD 23 ‘initiated the deterioration in Tiberius’ principate’ (6. 1). Modern historians are agreed that a decisive factor in this deterioration was the emperor’s determination to leave Rome in AD 26, a move which Tacitus gloomily portends in chapter 41 (AD 25) and eventually records, in due chronological sequence, at 57. 1. Suetonius is our other main source for this momentous event, and it is instructive to compare his treatment of it with that of Tacitus.

Abstract:
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The test vehicle is All Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicle which is powered by four-cylinder engine. The power is transferred from the powertrain to the wheel through power transfer unit (PTU), propeller shaft, flexible rubber coupling and Integrated Rear Differential Assembly (IRDA) . Higher boom noise and vibration levels are observed when driving the vehicle in 4th gear WOT conditions. NVH levels are dominant between 1150 rpm to 2100 rpm and at 2200 rpm in 2nd order and 4th order respectively. Operational deflection shape (ODS) analysis is carried out on entire vehicle to identify the location where maximum deflection is observed at the problematic frequency. It is identified that higher torsional excitation from the powertrain is exciting the IRDA pitching mode and the propeller shaft bending mode which is the reason for higher 2nd order and 4th order NVH levels. The driveline forces are entering the body through the IRDA and rear cradle bushes. The dynamic stiffness of IRDA bushes is reduced which resulted in reduction of 2nd order vibration levels by ~ 7 dB at 2100 rpm. Further reduction of vibration is achieved by using mass dampers on IRDA and by reducing the stiffness of rear cradle bushes. Modal analysis is done on the propeller shaft to identify the mode shape at the problematic frequency. Various solutions like increasing the propeller shaft dynamic stiffness and tuned mass dampers on propeller shaft are investigated and the optimum solution which provides the best performance is selected. Stiffness of the rubber coupling used in driveline is modified to reduce the torsional excitation on the IRDA and various methods of reducing torsional excitation in driveline are discussed.
