Abstract:
This article considers how markers of place function differently in the print book ecosystem vs. the ebook ecosystem, using books associated with Australia and Western Australia as a case study. Although book historians have mostly failed to engage with ebooks as subject matter, they have considered in some detail the way in which markers of place function in the print book ecosystem. By surveying the scholarly output of book historians working with mapping technologies, it is possible to conclude that, in the print book ecosystem, there exist a handful of markers identifying the following categories: places associated with a book’s setting, its author, its publication, its purchase, and its marketing and publicity. The latter three markers look substantially different in the ebook ecosystem than in the print book ecosystem. Furthermore, in the ebook ecosystem, changes to these three markers can mediate setting and author as markers of place.

Abstract:
Expectations and patterns of publication have changed markedly with evolving online availability and associated development of new citation gathering databases. Perhaps the most vulnerable components of the scientific literature to ongoing change are books and book chapters, given their elongated publication timelines and generally more limited online availability. To test this, we applied citation analyses and assessments of library holdings to determine the use of the natural history books published by Surrey Beatty & Sons between 1987 and 2010. We (i) evaluated the relative use of book chapters and journal papers by comparing citations to chapters in the five books of the Nature Conservation series by Surrey Beatty & Sons to citations of journal chapters in four Australian journals published in the same years, (ii) determined the efficacy of four different databases in retrieving citations to book chapters by comparing their recovery of citations to the five books of the Nature Conservation series, and (iii) quantified noncitation measures related to library holdings to evaluate the use of the books on the entire Surrey Beatty & Sons list. Mean citations/chapter to the first three books in the Nature Conservation series were similar to the mean citations/ paper in four Australian journals published in the same years. However, the mean citations/chapter of the last two books declined relative to citations/paper for the journals, suggesting a fall in book use evident by early this century. Citation retrieval varied across databases; Google Scholar retrieved most citations, followed by Scopus, Web of Science (Cited Reference Search) and Web of Knowledge. Contrary to published concerns, no citations retrieved by Google Scholar were in questionable sources such as contents pages - many were from highly ranked journals. Each book in the full Surrey Beatty & Sons list was held by an average of 45.3 libraries in Australia and 36.1 in the USA, and less than five in each of the UK, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Canada, Germany and South Africa. This was a similar coverage to another Australian publisher, the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales, and indicated strong markets in Australia and the USA. It was less, though, than the number of libraries with current or past subscriptions to five Australian journals publishing nature conservation content. We conclude that citation data for books and book chapters are available and that library holdings provide another measure of use. The online ‘visibility’ of books may be a problem, but can be improved through better marketing and improved author search techniques.

Abstract:
The Children’s Literature Collection at the State Library of Victoria holds over 100,000 Australian and overseas children’s books published between the sixteenth and twenty-first centuries. In 1994 this collection was significantly enhanced through the acquisition of the Ken Pound collection of children’s books and ephemera. When buying at local fairs and markets over twenty-five years, Ken Pound made no distinction between quality of content or ephemerality. If a publication addressed a child readership, Ken Pound added it to his collection. The State Library’s acquisition of this collection means that publications from small Australian publishers, variant editions of titles, advertising, merchandising and other ephemeral material augment the existing strengths of the Children’s Literature Collection. The comprehensive scope of the Australian component of this heritage collection of children’s books positions it as a unique research resource for children’s literature scholars. I begin by identifying the factors that operated to relegate the John Mystery children’s books to the forgotten basket of Australian literary heritage. The John Mystery emporium occupied a niche in the Australian book trade at a time when existing Australian publishers were minimizing output due to war-time restrictions on labour and materials. In contextualizing the John Mystery phenomenon, I compare the flamboyance and eccentricity of the creator, Lester Sinclair, with the earlier entrepreneur, E. W. Cole, who employed similarly theatrical marketing strategies. Also, I interrogate content of a selection of John Mystery titles and reflect on the values embedded in these seemingly innocent escapist fantasies. Finally I will suggest how the State Library of Victoria’s heritage collections present potential resources for scholars of children’s literature.

Engineering, Construction and Architectural Management 25, no. 8 (September 17, 2018): 1075–91. http://dx.doi.org/10.1108/ecam-03-2017-0052.

Abstract:
Purpose Research into the construction industry’s adoption of modern equipment technologies, such as remote-controlled trucks, excavators and drones, has been neglected in comparison to the significant body of research into the adoption of information technology in construction. Construction research has also neglected to adequately consider the important role of vendors in the innovation diffusion process, focussing mostly on the role of the customer. Set within the context of Australia’s construction industry, the purpose of this paper is to address these gaps in knowledge by exploring the role of customers and vendors in the diffusion of modern equipment technologies into the construction industry. Design/methodology/approach Using contemporary models of innovation diffusion which move beyond the simple dualistic problem of whether innovation is supply-pushed or demand-pulled, 19 semi-structured interviews were undertaken with customers and vendors involved in two major modern equipment technology trade exhibitions in Australia. This was followed by the collection of documentary data in the form of photos, directory books, marketing material, catalogues, websites and booth and exhibition layouts to validate the proposed model and provide insights into vendor marketing strategies. These data were analysed using both content analysis and principal component analysis (PCA). Findings According to the PCA and content analysis, vendor’s engagement in the adoption of modern equipment technologies falls into three stages that correspond to three stages in the customer’s adoption process. In the first stage, customers identify possible solutions and recognise new technologies following a previous recognition of a need. Vendors provide facilities for attracting potential customers and letting customers know that their technology exists and can help solve the customer’s problem. The second stage involves customers gaining knowledge about the details of the new technology, and vendors focusing on detailed knowledge transfer through written materials and demonstrations of the functionality of the new technology. In the third stage, customers have specific questions that they want answered to assist them in comparing different vendors and solutions. By this stage, vendors have built a close relationship with the customer and in contrast to earlier stages engage in two-way communication to help the customer’s decision process by addressing specific technical and support-related questions. Originality/value The originality and value of this research is in addressing the lack of research in modern equipment technology adoption for building construction and the lack of data on the role of vendors in the process by developing a new empirical framework which describes the stages in the process and the ways that customers and vendors interact at each stage. The results indicate that conceptually, as the construction industry becomes more industrialised, current models of innovation adoption will need to develop to reflect this growing technological complexity and recognise that vendors and customers engage differently in the adoption process, according to the type of technology they wish to adopt.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the meaning of the concept of "gamification". It is determined that since 2011 the number of specialized conferences, books and research on the topic of gamification has increased, but its content is interpreted differently by scientists: both as a process and as a set of techniques or techniques. It is characterized that gamification in education is used in two meanings: in a broad sense - the game shell (attributes, techniques, elements) is used without the use of ICT; in the narrow - gamification is based on the use of ICT (video games, specialized programs, etc.). The purpose of using gamification at higher education institutions in experimental research is clarified. The main components of gamification are identified. It has been found that scientists warn against mechanistic using of marketing methods in education. Experiences of using gamification in the training of social workers (Concordia University (Portland, USA) and the Center for Applied Social Research RTIM (Australia)) are analyzed. The most common practices are identified: online courses (MOOK) in the social field, trainings, gamification support platforms; 3D virtual environment. It has been found that gamification has not yet become widespread in the training of social workers. It is determined that the results of empirical studies of the effectiveness of gamification for the quality of training of social workers are different and reveal complications of technical, psychological and pedagogical nature. The factors that limit the introduction of gamification in the educational process are described. The possibilities of using gamification in the training of social workers in higher education institutions are generalized. It is determined that the choice of types and methods of implementation of game elements should be determined by the teacher depending on the general objectives of the discipline, ensuring the implementation of the educational program, and comply with the Standard for training a specialist in the social field. Increasing demand for distance learning services will expand the search for ways to use gamification in the training of social workers. It is planned to develop a general game scenario for a discipline in the LMS Moodle environment for distance learning of future social workers.

A. Laws, Tom, and Murray Drummond. "A Content Analysis of Contemporary Men's Health Books Marketed to the Health Professional." Australian Journal of Primary Health 8, no. 2 (2002): 77. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/py02031.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of "men's health" per se has followed on from the development of substantial social theories that coherently supported the women's health movement and women's health policy. Subsequently, literature on women's health took a variety of forms and has had time to meet the growing needs of that market. While men's health literature is a burgeoning area the needs and derivations of the market are yet to be fully understood. This review of three men's health books intended for health professionals and easily located in Australian bookshops or on-line marketing, shows that there are numerous gaps in content that are likely to frustrate the health professional who is wanting salient knowledge and appropriate guidelines on social and health practice. We argue that the reason for the mismatch between what is supplied and what is demanded by the health professional can, to a great extent, be attributed to two important factors. That is, the domination of the biomedical model as a means of structuring and presenting information and a rhetorical approach that attempts to extrapolate theories about masculinity to men's health issues. We further suggest that a more vibrant rhetoric is about to take place with the emergence of a more critical appraisal of where the men's movement is heading.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to elucidate the value creation process within a culturally diversified museum (CDM), which aims to achieve social inclusion, i.e. bridging the social divide between mainstream and minority communities, through the integration of CDM’s and visitors’ resources. Using service logic (SL) theory as the theoretical lens, we aim to unveil the CDM’s unique service provider and customer (visitor) resources, the corresponding resource integration process that explains value co-creation and co-destruction and the resultant value outcomes for social inclusion. Design/methodology/approach A case study of an Australian CDM is used, involving various qualitative data sources, including depth interviews, focus groups, visitor book content analysis, on-site observation and participation in the CDM’s events and forums. Findings The findings provide insights into the unique CDM and visitor resources that are integrated to achieve value outcomes that foster social inclusion. However, the results suggest that alongside value co-creation, co-destruction can unfold, causing a (mis)alignment with the aim of the CDM to bridge the social divide between mainstream and minority communities. Practical implications This study’s findings offer salient implications for CDMs and similar service providers that enables social inclusion and policymakers. Originality/value This study contributes to the service domain by highlighting the importance of the alignment between provider and customer resources to co-create value within a culturally diversified context. That is, CDMs can learn from the misalignment of their resources and those of their visitors to improve their resource offerings and achieve greater social inclusion outcomes in the future.

Vincent, Barbara. Farming Meat Goats. CSIRO Publishing, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643093058.

Full text
Abstract:
Goat meat is growing in popularity and is becoming an important export industry. It offers many opportunities for large- and small-scale farmers who need to diversify or seek alternative enterprises. This book deals specifically with the production of goats for meat and addresses all aspects of the industry that the producer is likely to encounter. It covers selecting and preparing a property, choosing the breeding stock, breeding, health care and nutrition, drought feeding, condition scoring and marketing. One of the key benefits of Farming Meat Goats is that it will allow farmers to produce animals to specification for targeted markets in Australia and overseas including: butchers; supermarkets; restaurants; on-farm live sales; sales to abattoirs that specialise in Halal kills; and breeding stock either as replacements, or for improved herd genetics.

Hayes, Margo. Small Cattle for Small Farms. CSIRO Publishing, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643095793.

Full text
Abstract:
There are more small farms in Australia than there are large, and this trend continues as an increasing number of larger farms are subdivided into smaller parcels. A growing demand for lifestyle blocks, in Australia and overseas, is fuelling an interest in the quieter, smaller breeds of cattle which have particular appeal as they are more manageable to control and maintain. Small Cattle for Small Farms is ideal for those people considering buying a small farm for lifestyle or commercial purposes. Written in response to the many questions the author was asked by those seeking to purchase small cattle, this practical and easy to understand guide provides an excellent introduction to small farming. The book assumes no prior experience with cattle, and covers all the basics to help you set up your small farm, including: types of cattle available, how to select your stock and care for them, stocking rates, fencing needs, vaccination requirements, methods of identification, and government requirements for land and stockowners. For those wishing to show their cattle, there is a chapter explaining how to prepare for competitions. A section on marketing details how to make a successful entry into the commercial beef industry, and a list of cattle organisations directs readers to more specific information for their chosen breeds.
