Abstract:
The original AO HRR color vision test has been considered by many as one of the best plate tests. It is still accepted by many governmental agencies for color vision certification. In their 1954 publication, Hardy, Rand, and Rittler stated that specially compounded inks were used for printing to avoid color changes with time. Fifty years later, it is both important and interesting to determine whether the wear and tear cause significant color changes. The chance finding of a never-used second edition offers an opportunity to evaluate the color changes. A GretagMacbeth Spectrolino spectrophotometer was used to measure the chromaticities of the never-used book, and an extensively used book. Four plates (#4, 7, 13, 16), selected randomly from the four red-green sections, were analyzed. The colored dots from each of the eight plates were plotted on a CIE chromaticity diagram. Isocolor lines were drawn to evaluate chromatic alignment. Chromaticities for plates #4 and 7 are significantly different between the two books. With regard to alignment with isocolor lines, the extensively used book is better than the never-used book for plate #4. There is significant misalignment on plate #7 for both books. Chromaticities for plates #13 and 16 are essentially identical between books, all with good alignment with isocolor lines. The overall comparison shows that the chromatic alignment characteristics of the extensively used book are not worse than the never-used book. Since colors in these plates have to be aligned with both the protan and deutan axes, any significant color changes would have disturbed this delicate requirement. The findings of many plates with good alignment, and the lack of differences on plates #13 and 16 between books, suggest that there are no significant color changes over time. Differences between books on plates #4 and 7 were likely the result of the original printing process.

Paliukh, Oleksandr, Petro Kyrychok, Yevheniy Shtefan, and Andrii Titov. "Development of information support for simulation of the process of deformation of root polymer plate in book blocks sewed with threads." Eastern-European Journal of Enterprise Technologies 5, no. 1 (119) (October 30, 2022): 62–73. http://dx.doi.org/10.15587/1729-4061.2022.265869.

Abstract:
The object of this study is the processes of deformation of the root polymer plate reinforced with stitches of threads with preliminary tension in book blocks sewn with threads. The analytical and experimental studies reported here are based on the application of the methodology for developing a simulation model of the process of deforming the adhesive polymer plate. The basic assumption of the study is that the use of information support for simulation modeling will contribute to the improvement of the structural and technological parameters of the root part of the book blocks sewn with threads. This cannot be achieved without analyzing and decomposition of the technical system of the book block, classifying subsystems and describing them in the form of a finite set of classes and the connections between them. A procedure for determining the mechanism of interaction of elements of the root part of book blocks sewn with threads is proposed. It is shown that the residual cyclic deformation of the adhesive plate and the stitches of the implanted threads depends on the strength of the bonds between the elements of the joined structure of the materials. It also depends on the number of cycles of discrete loads heterogeneous in terms of dimensional indicators and the place of their application. This is due to the fact that stitches of threads are only partially implanted into the structure of the adhesive plate, the other part that fastens the folds of notebooks is outside the adhesive plate. The influence of cyclic loads applied at different angles relative to the stitches of the threads was revealed. The angular discrepancy fluctuates, in the case of using PVAD D51C glue, in the range of 0.735–0.907, and, for Technomelt GE3636 thermal glue, 0.913–0.940. The developed simulation model of the processes of deformation of the root polymer plate makes it possible to determine the mechanism of interaction of the elements of the root part of the book blocks and predict the durability of the product

Abstract:
The hulls of modern ships are almost entirely welded. This makes the prediction of post-welded deformations very important. The number of parameters involved in the process of welding is large, so the exact mathematical theory for prediction of deformations is unavailable. Some researchers have estimated the post-welded deflections based on empirical and semi-empirical equations. The growing literature on the study of postwelded deflections of hull plates enables the estimation of these deflections based on the plate geometry and the plate material. The limited number of critical parameters covered by these experiments makes it difficult to organize the data systematically. This has delayed the introduction of a framework for estimating the influence on the plate deflection from welding speed, current, number of passes, welding rod size and material, etc. The approach adopted in the U.S.S.R. was to develop an integrated framework to include the critical welding parameters. The main results from this approach were published in several books, with the main reference being a book by Kuzminov published in 1974. From the standpoint of ship production, it is useful to understand this Soviet approach as well as to give examples of its use. Therefore, this paper introduces the Soviet procedure for calculation of deflection due to butt welding, presents the graphical aids used in this procedure, and presents a worked example using this procedure for a butt welded plate.

Full text
Abstract:
Rylands Irish MS 22 is a copy of Geoffrey Keatings Trí Biorghaoithe an Bháis (1631), made by the well-known scribe Risteard Tuibear in 1710, a professionally made vernacular book, making available for circulation a widely read devotional text. In the last two pages the scribe permitted an apprentice to copy, and as a result he had to write the ending a second time more correctly. Like several other books made by Tuibear, it belonged to Muiris Ó Gormáin in Dublin in the later eighteenth century and is found in his book lists from 1761 and 1772. Inside the front is the book-plate of the Duke of Sussex, and the catalogue of his library from 1827 shows that this is a book given to him by Sir William Betham a year earlier. When the Duke‘s library was auctioned, this was sold to a London dealer, reappearing in sales between 1866 and 1869. It was bought by the Earl of Crawford and came with all his manuscripts into the Rylands Library, where for its origin and history it stands out from a collection of books largely made for or by Denis Kelly, of Castle Kelly, in the mid-nineteenth century.

ABSTRACT In 1845, Roderick Murchison, Edouard de Verneuil and Alexander von Keyserling published The Geology of Russia in Europe and the Ural Mountains, reporting on the results of two field seasons in Russia (1840 and 1841) as well as additional fieldwork in Poland (1843) and Scandinavia (1844 and 1845). The book contains 7 plates comprising 5 cross-sections and 2 geologic maps. Plate 6 is a geologic map titled “Russia in Europe and the Ural Mountains . . .” and it is the subject of this paper. Murchison had 600 copies of the large format (quarto) book printed by John Murray in the laborious hand-press manner. He also had the 68 × 84 cm map produced as a copper engraving with water color washes. Plate 6 has been described as “the finest hand coloured map ever produced”. The map was drawn and engraved by John Arrowsmith from a sketch map begun in 1840, expanded after the 1841 field season, and further modified by incorporating work of other geologists, including Keilhau, Hisinger, Zejszner, Boué, Dubois de Montpereux, Hamilton, Ainsworth, and Helmersen. All of these geologists were meticulously acknowledged by Murchison in The Geology of Russia. In addition to the map, Plate 6 contains a stratigraphic column with key locations and characteristic fossils, and a crosssection extending from St. Petersburg to the Sea of Azof. Thus, Plate 6 represents a synthesis of much of what was known in 1845 of the geology of Russia and surrounding territories, clearly demonstrating Murchison’s ‘genius of combination’. Murchison revised the map several times, resulting in 4 ‘states’ of the map.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the first half of the 17th century penmanship in the Dutch Republic flourished as never before or since. Responsible for this flowering were a number of schoolmasters from Brabant and Flanders who in the 1570s and 80s had fled to the North and had settled there as writing-masters. To what level they had raised calligraphy may be seen from a large number of manuscript and printed writing-books that have been preserved. Just as they inspired their followers in years to come they had themselves found a source of inspiration in the two copy-books of Clemens Perret, brought out in 1569 and 1571. The earlier of these, the Exercitatio alphabetica, was not only the first ever to be reproduced entirely by copper engraving, but also the first with examples in seven languages, all of them written in the appropriate hands. Moreover in this book, the first to be produced in the Low Countries in such a large, oblong size, all plates had lavishly executed borders, designed on an architectural framework on which a variety of objects, human figures, grotesques, animals and so on were depicted. The book was obviously designed for collectors, wealthy connoisseurs and fellow writing-masters. The later book, the Eximiae peritiae alphabetum, although containing an equal number of plates, likewise in seven languages and in various hands, lacks the beautiful borders and is of slightly smaller size. It is altogether a more modestly conceived book, surely intended for use at school. Little is known about Perret's life. The title-pages of his books tell us that he was born in Brussels in 1551. A poem in a writing-book by Jacobus Houthusius, published in 1591, refers to his death. A contemporary manuscript note in a pamphlet of 1583 states that the writer Etienne Perret was his father. In the Plantin archives it is recorded that he had a brother, named Paul, and a sister. In a pamphlet of 1599 the writing-master Jan van den Velde states that Perret went to England to serve Queen Elizabeth's Chancellor as writing-master and teach the Queen the Italian hand. This seems unlikely as the Queen is known to have learned italic handwriting from Roger Ascham, while still a girl. The author has examined 26 copies of the Exercitatio in public collections and distinguishes two different editions. The first was probably brought out by Perret himself. Nearly all its plates contain errors in spelling, punctuation and word division. When Plantin took the distribution of the book in hand these mistakes were corrected and another plate added, containing within an engraved border a privilege with the text in letterpress: the 2nd edition. A variant of this edition is identical but for the privilege which is now engraved. The 2nd edition, corrected

Abstract:
The book cover of Biblia Germanicolatina (1565), which is held at the Rare Books and Manuscrips Unit of the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania, is analysed in this paper. This Bible was printed in a 20-volume collection in Wittenberg on request of August the Elect of Saxony (1526–1586). It was printed in the Latin and German languages. This Bible later became a part of various European libraries. Biblia Germanicolatina is analysed in the light of the paratext theory, which as a book history term is first used by French literary theorist Gerard Genette (1987). Genette used this term to describe objects and subjects surrounding the text: text spacing, lettering, book covers and even book advertisements. The analysis is performed using the provenance method, which leads to discovering the origins of the book’s binding and its primary sources. As of right now, five out of the 20 volumes from the collection are known to be held in Lithuanian memory institutions. As a result of this research, we were able to identify the bookbinder from Wittenberg who ordered the plate for tooling in 1564.

Abstract:
This research aims to determine the movement of waves that cause tsunamis based on tsunami intensity values by connecting science and the Koran. The method used in this research is a literature study with a descriptive analysis approach. Data collection uses interview observation techniques, documentation and relevant literature. Based on the results of interview observations and BMKG documentation data, tsunami waves have different characteristics based on the modeling and movement of each cause, including landslides, subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate under the Eurasian Plate, volcanoes, and more influential causes of earthquakes. which occurs due to shifts in the earth’s plates which trigger the emergence of rolling waves called tsunamis. The scientific view is that tsunamis occur like earthquakes due to plate movements that occur, allowing friction or collisions between plates to occur. The result of this collision will cause one plate to rise and the other plate to subduct, this is often called subduction. This event will cause an earthquake. The earthquake that occurred is very likely to cause a tsunami. The explanation outlined in the Book of Allah has a broad dimension of knowledge and insight, especially discussing science and nature. The Qur’an’s view of tsunamis is that they are a disaster or calamity that occurs according to His will, tsunamis are absolutely due to the laws and provisions of Allah SWT for nature. These things are one of the signs of a small apocalypse.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe wide range of organs of respiration (book-gills, book-lungs, sieve- and tube-tracheae), reproduction, sensory perception, etc., among the chelicerates indicates that the major groups made the transition to land life independently. The fossil record is patchy for most chelicerate groups, certain intervals (e.g. Westphalian) being particularly rich in chelicerate bearing Lagerstatten while in others (e.g. Mesozoic) they are sparse. Due, apparently, to their unusual hyaline exocuticle, scorpions are better preserved than other arthropods, and show a fairly continuous record from fully aquatic forms in the Silurian, to both aquatic and terrestrial faunas in the Carboniferous. In particular, new and well-preserved material of the earliest demonstrably terrestrial scorpions from the Lower Carboniferous of East Kirkton, West Lothian, suggests that book-lungs, at least in the scorpions, developed directly from book-gills by suturing of the covering plate (Blattfuss of the related eurypterids) to leave stigmata for diffusion of air. This evidence supports the ideas of early authors that the scorpion mesosomal ‘sternites’ are fused plates, contra Kjellesvig-Waering (1986) who envisaged the plates being lost to reveal true sternites beneath. The fossil evidence also indicates that by the Triassic at least two scorpion lineages had evolved intra-‘sternite’ stigmata.

Abstract:
Standard text-book dislocation theory for the elastic fields of a dislocation is provided in an infinite medium. For problems involving free surfaces, or image stresses, the solution for such elastic fields is more complex. The current article extends the state of knowledge for problems with free surfaces to address the stress field of a screw dislocation in a plate (two planar free surfaces) containing a hole/void. Such surfaces interact and thus affect the stress field of a dislocation in deviation of the infinite medium solution. The numerical solutions provided herein, based on reflective image stresses and the collocation-point method, have been verified to the extent available and such solutions allow for further applied problems. One main finding of the paper is that the equilibrium location of a screw dislocation is always closer to the hole/void surface than the planar free surface.

Abstract:
Background: The best operative management for open-book pelvic injury with anterior sacroiliac disruption (OTA/AO B1.1 classification) is still debated. This biomechanical study aimed to find the best internal fixation technique for such injury. Methods: Open-book injury with anterior sacroiliac joint disruption was simulated on 25 artificial pelvic bones. Twenty five artificial pelvic bones were divided into 5 groups (n=5 /group) and fixated with five different fixation techniques: 1). 1SP+1IS; 2). 2SP; 3). 2SP+2SIP; 4). 1SP+2IS S1, and 5). 1SP+1IS S1+S2. Biomechanical properties of each fixation technique were assessed using Tensilon® RTF-1310 to measure the resistance to translation and load to failure. Data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by post-hoc Bonferroni test. Results: The highest mean load to failure of axial forces (1490.36 N) was achieved by the fixation technique using one symphyseal plate and two iliosacral screws located at S1 dan S2. The addition of one iliosacral screw significantly increased the mean load to failure for axial compression (p<0.05).Conclusion: The addition of sacroiliac joint posterior fixation, either with plate or screw, will increase the fixation biomechanical strength. Single symphyseal plate and two iliosacral screws on S1 and S2 provided the best mechanical resistance to axial loading. Thus, it can be concluded that such fixation technique is best for open-book pelvic injury with anterior sacroiliac disruption.

Abstract The availability of pitch-tracking data has led to increased scrutiny of Major League Baseball umpires. While many studies have attempted to rate umpires based on their conformity to the rule book strike zone, players and managers tend to accept deviations from this zone, provided that umpires establish consistent zones within a game. Using tools from computational geometry, we propose new metrics for assessing the consistency and accuracy of an umpire’s ball and strike calls over the course of a game. We apply these metrics to pitch-tracking data on all ball and strike calls made during the 2017 MLB regular season, giving some characterizations of the variation in performance of MLB umpires. This analysis demonstrates that measures of consistency can complement current accuracy-based evaluations of umpires.

Abstract:
An alternative approach is proposed here to investigate the problem of scattering of surface water waves by a vertical permeable plate submerged in deep water within the framework of linear water wave theory. Using Havelock’s expansion of water wave potential, the associated boundary value problem is reduced to a second kind hypersingular integral equation of order 2. The unknown function of the hypersingular integral equation is expressed as a product of a suitable weight function and an unknown polynomial. The associated hypersingular integral of order 2 is evaluated by representing it as the derivative of a singular integral of the Cauchy type which is computed by employing an idea explained in Gakhov’s book [7]. The values of the reflection coefficient computed with the help of present method match exactly with the previous results available in the literature. The energy identity is derived using the Havelock’s theorems.

Abstract:
In 1937, the printing of the Tripitaka Koreana was carried out under the supervision of Gyeongseong Imperial University professor Dakahasi Toru(高橋亨) through the cooperation of the Japanese Government- General of Korea at the request and praying of KangDeok-je, the emperor of Manchukuo. In 1935, the KangDe Emperor visited Japan and observed old books and paintings from Joseon, China, and Japan in the collections of the Palace Museum and Jesil Museum, and was interested in the Goryeo Tripitaka and the Hwangbyeokpan Tripitaka. In 1936, the KangDe Emperor requested the Japanese Government-General of Korea to print the Tripitaka Koreana. It is presumed that Kang Deok-je's request for printing the Tripitaka was based on his devout Buddhist faith, and that he wished for merit or reward through the printing of the Tripitaka, a compilation of Buddhism. The printing of the Tripitaka in 1937 was requested by the KangDe Emperor, but 2 sets of Tripitaka were printed with one copy for the Central Buddhist College. In addition, the items required for printing were produced in Joseon, and printing and binding were performed by Joseon people in the traditional way of Joseon. Preparation for printing began in June 1937, printing was done from September 2nd to October 17th, and binding and box production were completed by December 1937. The Tripitaka arrived in Manchukuo on January 19, 1938. What was sent to the KangDe Emperor was 1,163 books of the Tripitaka, 3 lists, and 48 boxes, as well as 2 books of Daegakguksa-munjib大覺國師文集 and 1 book of Haejangsa-sajinjang 海印寺寫眞帳 in Haeinsa. The printed version was enshrined in Manchukuo and Bohyeonsa in Mt. Myohyang, Pyongan-do, and the Tripitaka in Manchukuo is unknown. Regarding the characteristics of the printing of the Tripitaka in 1937, the missing scriptures and supplementation of missing letters were reviewed. At the time of printing in 1937, 18 plates were engraved again with the intention of reproducing the original plate of the Goryeo Dynasty for the re-engraved plate to supplement the missing plate in 1915. The missing letters due to the damage of the Tripitaka scriptures were supplemented using 1,017 letters in 136 places produced in 1915.

The author discusses geological phenomena in the Pacific region from “historical, geographical, and geological perspectives” (xv) with an emphasis on earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes. Topics range from as overarching as plate tectonics to narrower but still broadly applicable topics such as definitions of hazard versus risk to specific sites and events. She uses “important stories” (xv) and myths to add interest. Because of all of the processes, events, and consequences it drives, the author notes that “the strongest theme presented herein is plate tectonics” (xvii).

Abstract Hydraulic pump failures may be related to hardware or problem in oil. In this study, the excavator hydraulic pump failures were investigated by using visual observed and measuring the part component. The disassembled process of the pump was performed considering the manual part book of the excavator hydraulic pump. The abrasive wear on the pump slipper and swash plate was observed by comparing the guidelines for the reusable part. The value of more than 1.07 mm clearance within piston and cylinder bore was measured then the results over the allowable limit considering the manual part book. Properly analyzing of component failure can provide valuable information about what caused the failure and thus can be to avoiding future unscheduled downtime.

Abstract:
This work presents the solution of the steady-state heat transfer problem in a rectangular plate with an internal heat source in a context in which the thermal conductivity depends on the local temperature. This generalization of one of the most classical heat transfer problems is carried out with the aid of the Kirchhoff transformation and employs only well known tools, as the superposition of solutions and the Fourier series. The obtained results illustrate how the usual procedures may be extended for solving more realistic physical problems (since the thermal conductivity of any material is temperature-dependent). A general formula for evaluating the Kirchhoff transformation as well as its inverse is presented too. This work has a strong didactical contribution since such analytical solutions are not found in any classical heat transfer book. In addition, the main idea can be used in a lot of similar problems.

The centerpiece of Oliver Taplin's recent monograph on Greek drama and South Italian vase-painting is an Apulian bell-krater of the early fourth century in a New York private collection (Plate IV). The vase belongs to the genre conventionally known as phlyax vases, though Taplin would reject that label, since it is the thesis of his book that many, if not most, of these vases reflect Athenian Old Comedy and not an indigenous Italic entertainment, the phlyax play.

Abstract In Ernst Haeckel’s classic book Kunstsformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), forams are prominent; they occupy three of the 100 plates. In one plate, the centerpiece is Peneroplis planatus, shown with extended rhizopods, and organisms from the plankton. It is a very curious illustration as it is the only foram shown living and one of only two organisms in all of Kunstsformen der Natur pictured with possible prey. Here I show that the apparent planktonic prey of P. planatus closely resemble the prey items shown in Haeckel's earlier illustrations of his supposedly primitive life forms Protogenes primordialis and Protomyxa aurantiaca in the 1860s. These forms, now considered dubious, were described as possibly naked forams by Claus (1872), a diagnosis repeated by Brady (1884) in his HMS Challenger report, a source of many illustrations in Haeckel's foram plates. I speculate that Haeckel's depiction of P. planatus, shown much like his primitive forms, was a discrete nod of agreement with the diagnoses of Claus (1872). Examples of Haeckel's stylizations of the morphology of forams in his plates are also shown in support of the notion that Haeckel exercised artistic liberty in his depictions of forams.

Abstract:
The physicist Damian Kreichgauer entered the German Missionary Order Societas Verbi Divini (SVD) in 1892. From 1895 onwards, he taught natural sciences to future missionaries at the Order's seminary St Gabriel (Austria). In 1902, he published a book called Die Äquatorfrage in der Geologie (The Question of the Equator in Geology) with the Order's publishing outlet, in which he advocated the idea of a mobilistic Earth, where the Earth's crust as a whole moved with respect to the fluid core and the Earth's rotational axis. The main evidence for this idea he found in the changing of climate zones during geological epochs. Due to a small database, which was basically restricted to European plate localities, Kreichgauer did not notice discrepancies between polar wander on different continents. Nevertheless, the book was later cited and discussed as one of his precursors by Alfred Wegener in his book on the origin of continents and oceans. Kreichgauer also introduced his ideas to parallel the events of the biblical Genesis with geological epochs. He later expanded this ‘concordance theory’ in a separate book Das Sechstagewerk (The Work of the Six Days). He eventually abandoned scientific work, possibly due to censorship wielded by the Superior of his Order, unlike his contemporary, the Jesuit Erich Wasmann, a respected entomologist, who defended evolutionary ideas despite adverse Church politics and censorship.

This paper considers the representation of Achilles in Roman poetry and art and, in particular, Roman interest in his childhood, culminating in the ‘exposure’ on Scyros. It is argued that common features in literature and art support the existence of illustrated mythographic handbooks. The relationship of Statius' Achilleid to the cycle of scenes representing Achilles' early years known from wall-paintings, mosaics, sarcophagi and the Kaiseraugst plate is discussed. Although the surviving book of the Achilleid concerns the pre-Troy years, it is suggested that Statius' real focus was the Trojan War itself.

Claude Allègre's recent book on the development and subsequent modification of plate tectonic theory is written from the perspective that history is a tale of progress. Analysis of the text reveals that this point of view originates from (1) a deep emotional attachment to the earth, explanatory theories of the earth, and the earth sciences; and (2) a firm conviction both that nature exists independently of those who seek to know her and that nature is knowable. Such attitudes facilitate research in science but hinder understanding of science.

AbstractThe 21st century has witnessed a significant transformation of the economies of many developing countries. Consequently, many studies have argued that the centre of gravity of the global economy is shifting from the Western core to the semi-peripheral East. Vassilis Fouskas and Bülent Gökay’s global fault-lines model detailed in their book titled The Fall of the US Empire: Global Fault-Lines and the Shifting Imperial Order is an attempt to use some ideas of the theory of plate tectonics to explain the historical-geographic tectonic shifts in the global political economy. This paper shows the major arguments of the global fault-lines model and shows the link between the plate tectonics theory and the global fault-lines model. Finally, it highlights the implications of the tectonic shifts in the global political economy and by so doing argues for the expansion of BRICS and strengthening of the south-south cooperation paradigm.

Al-Mada'ini's method in his book "Futouh Khorasan" The book "Futouh Khorasan" for the great historian Ali bin Mohammed bin Abi Saif Al-Mada'ini (died 225AH/840AD) is regarded as one of the oldest books of conquers (Futouh) in Arabic, and the most important document talks about the history of Muslims at that early period. Despite the importance of its history in view that it is interested in military, administrative and political conditions, yet the book is one of the missing books from our lost heritage, and some of its texts remained within the folds of the late historical sources. We will study in this research the book "Futouh Khorasan" in terms of Al-Mada'ini's methodology in it as well as his style and his most important resources he relied on in his book. We divided this research into three sections, the first section dealt with Al-Mada'ini's method in his book "Futouh Khorasan", while the second section addressed the content of the book and the last section discussed the status of the book "Futouh Khorasan" among the books of conquers "Fotouh".

Abstract:
This essay examines how Black girl narratives are finding and making space and place in the arena of comic books and television. With the rise in Black girl (super)hero protagonists on the comic book pages and adapted television shows, it is essential to explore the significance of their rising inclusion, visibility, and popularity and understand how they contribute to the discourse surrounding the next generation of heroes. Guided by an Afrofuturist, Black feminist, and intersectional framework, I discuss the progressive possibilities of popular media culture in depicting Black girlhood and adolescence. In Marvel Comics’ “RiRi Williams/Ironheart”, DC Comics’ “Naomi McDuffie”, and Boom! Studios’ “Eve”, these possibilities are evident. Blending aspects of adventure, fantasy, sci-fi, and STEM, each character offers fictional insight into the lived experiences of Black girl youth from historical, aesthetic, and expressive perspectives. Moreover, as talented and adventurous characters, their storylines, whether on the comic book pages or the television screen, reveal a necessary change to the landscape of popular media culture.

Abstract:
The article shows that the primary cognitive units of infants, thanks to which they begin to understand individual fragments of the visible world, are integral situations (‘a boy is eating porridge’, ‘Mother is reading a book’, etc.), since they satisfy the initial children’s needs and desires. In the process of child’s development, these situations are divided into specific participants (BOY, PORRIDGE, SPOON, PLATE) and relationships (‘plate – porridge’, ‘porridge portion – spoon’, ‘spoon – boy’s mouth’). The separated participants, i.e., the functional parts of situations, become the first children’s concepts. Later, in the same way (by dividing new situations into participants), more special and complex concepts are formed: ‘motor’, ‘carburetor’, ‘trombone’, etc. As a result, the article concludes that human concepts are not innate, as J. Fodor and early Chomsky believe, or are combinations of the simplest innate concepts, according to A. Wierzbicka, I. Mel’čuk and S. Pinker. All concepts rather arise as products of the decomposition of holistic situations that the child has previously learned.Simultaneously with the formation of concepts, a thematic classification arises in children: when sorting triads of objects (dog-cat-bone; plate-cup-spoon), the child combines into one group objects that jointly participate in a typical situation (e.g., the dog and the bone, the plate and the spoon), rather than objects that perform similar functions in the situation: the dog and the cat or the plate and the cup (taxonomic classification). It is shown that the source of the thematic classification is not encyclopedic knowledge, as it is commonly believed (G. Murphy, E. Markman), but the primary integral situations and the binary relations arising from their decomposition. In the final part of the article, the role of language in the formation of children’s classifications is analyzed, the genesis of metaphorical and metonymic meanings is discussed, and refined definitions of these meanings are given.

Abstract:
The commedia dell'arte is a type of improvised acting based around the masked stock characters of the merchant, lawyer and servant, whose earliest names were Magnifico, il Dottore and Zanni (Plate I). From 1571 onwards, it was spread throughout Europe by visiting troupes of professional Italian actors, whose members, activities and travels are, for the most part, well-documented. The way in which it reached Bavaria is less clear. Records, including three festival books, suggest that already as early as February 1568, when crown Prince Wilhelm married Princess Renée of Lorraine in Munich, the commedia dell'arte was an established and popular feature of Bavarian court festivities, to which it contributed in three contexts. Some of its costumes were used in masquerades; the Venetian Magnifico, or merchant, and his servant Zanni (the servant-master pair who became the central comic focus of the commedia dell'arte) appeared as masked clowns on several occasions, and on 8 March 1568 there was a full-length play whose description in Massimo Troiano's festival book is generally acknowledged as the earliest known comprehensive description of a complete commedia dell'arte performance.

This research intends to investigate behaviour of composite cold-formed steel joint numerically through finite element analysis by using ABAQUS and theoretically by referring to BS 5950-1:2000 and Green book P213 “Joint in Steel Construction-Composite Connection”. A composite joint is modelled by combination of composite beam and steel column with connection of HRS gusset plate and M12 bolts. The significant failure mode is local buckling in CFS column web which similar in experimental study, FEM numerical simulation and theoretical component calculation. The behaviour of the cold-formed steel composite joint will be expressed in moment-rotational and load-deflection relationship to determine the initial rotational stiffness and ultimate moment resistance. The findings from numerical and theoretical investigations are compared with the full-scale experimental study in three different thicknesses of gusset plate. A correlation in stiffness ratio and strength ratio are obtained in the range of 1.76 to 2.25, and 1.00 to 1.60 respectively indicating that the numerical modelling tends to underpredict the behaviour of the composite structures.

The bivalve Flexopecten glaber ponticus is an endemic and extinguishing species of the Black Sea listed in Red book of Crimea. The sequence of meiosis stages following fertilization; embryonic and larval development of F. glaber ponticus were studied. The bivalve reproduces in June and July; these mollusks are simultaneous hermaphrodites. When spawning stimulated, fertilization of mature ova 54.7 ± 2.11 mkm in diameter take place at the first metaphase stage of meiosis. There were 12 bivalents with the sizes from 1.59 to 4.54 mkm on the metaphase plate. The duration of meiosis stage, embryonic and larvae development were determined. The structure of veliger provinculum was described. Right and left lock-valves consist of 4 teeth: two of them are on the front and back side on each valve. Measurements of larvae are presented. The description of shell and lock morphology will enable identification of F. glaber ponticus larvae at planktonic veliger stage. The data on duration of meiosis stage, embryonic and larvae development can be used in developing biotechnics of bivalve reproduction.

AbstractObjectiveTo validate a picture book for estimation of food portion sizes using two approaches: (i) ‘perception’ of food portions by comparison with a series of food photos; and (ii) ‘conceptualization and memory’, using the same photos to estimate the amount of served food one hour after self-served food portions.DesignEach partner developed a country-specific picture book based on the so-called EPIC-Soft picture book. Representative and common photo series were chosen achieving approximately 25 % of the original picture book (n23). Three portions from each photo series were randomly selected.SettingThe study was performed within the Pilot study in the view of a Pan-European dietary survey – Adolescents, adults and elderly (PILOT-PANEU) project.SubjectsA sample of adolescents and adults was recruited in five countries: Bulgaria (n103), Finland (n34), Germany (n69), Hungary (n62) and Portugal (n77).ResultsAmong the portions of the corresponding photo series and depending on the type of food, from 18 % (cheese) to 96 % (ratatouille) of participants chose the correct portions. In the perception study, agreement between the portions shown and reported was substantial (intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC)=0·805) and the mean difference was very low. In the memory study, agreement between the served and reported portions was lower than in the perception study (ICC=0·536). Agreement also seemed to decrease as the appearance of food on the plate differed from food in the picture.ConclusionsOverall, the picture series selected can be applied in future intake surveys to quantify foods similar to those depicted in the pictures.

Abstract:
This article considers how markers of place function differently in the print book ecosystem vs. the ebook ecosystem, using books associated with Australia and Western Australia as a case study. Although book historians have mostly failed to engage with ebooks as subject matter, they have considered in some detail the way in which markers of place function in the print book ecosystem. By surveying the scholarly output of book historians working with mapping technologies, it is possible to conclude that, in the print book ecosystem, there exist a handful of markers identifying the following categories: places associated with a book’s setting, its author, its publication, its purchase, and its marketing and publicity. The latter three markers look substantially different in the ebook ecosystem than in the print book ecosystem. Furthermore, in the ebook ecosystem, changes to these three markers can mediate setting and author as markers of place.
