Borgstrom, Liam. "Between a book and a soft place : an investigation into the contemporary teaching of typography and book design at South African Higher Education Institutions." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/59323.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation addresses the teaching of typography and book design in South Africa and how the literature relating to its education has changed during the course of the twentieth century. Several scholarly and educational book titles are compared to one another based on their approach to the subject and this is compared to the historical development of typographic technologies as they were developed in Europe. Based on the theoretical pool of the assessed books, a list of theoretical topics was drawn up and used to survey the current teaching intent of graphic design study programmes at South African tertiary education institutions. It was found that in spite of a less direct technical focus in the teaching and learning materials, training institutions within departments and faculties of arts have developed their graphic design programmes with the intent of developing students who are technologically proficient, readily employable, artistically fluent, and aware of industrial and historical conventions in their fields. However, they do not necessarily teach historical book design conventions, focussing rather on the skills and software required for contemporary design practice.

Tagliabue, Aldo. "Commentary on the first book of the "Ephesiaca" of Xenophon of Ephesus." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3427452.

Full text
Abstract:
Most of the previous studies of the novel of Xenophon of Ephesus have pointed out its apparent lack of literary quality and consistency, coming to the conclusion that the version we have is an epitome. Conversely, my commentary offers a new interpretation of the "Ephesiaca" as a Bildungsroman, in which there is a progress from a physical conception of love to a more spiritual one, along with a systematic use of the two most important hypotexts of the genre: Homer's Odyssey and Plato's love dialogues.

Kahler, Eric. ""Tell Me, Where am I From?": A Study of the Performance of Geek Identity at Comic Book Conventions." Scholar Commons, 2015. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5514.

Full text
Abstract:
The performance of identity is an often studied subject matter. One identity, Geek, and the larger subculture to which it is attached (Geek culture) has become a growing field of study in since the turn of the millennium, mirroring the growth of the subculture itself. The question then is how do Geek's perform this identity and create an idea of what a Geek is? If there is a place to examine this performance then it is the growing event of comic book conventions. At these events thousands of individuals gather to celebrate, interact with, purchase and play with the commodities of Geek; comic books, video games, anime, manga and film. In this space, as I will discuss, the spectrum of performance as outline by Richard Schechner in Performance Theory occurs in simultaneous forms inside the convention. While there is ritual, there is also play, and theater, and all three may be occurring at any one time through any one individual. This is partially brought on by the presence of cosplayers, convention attendees who dress up as fictional characters, and perform a separate role that also speaks to their own identity. Furthermore, the presence of what Victor Turner terms social dramas in the space of the panel discussion complicate and re-form not only individual identities, but also Geek culture identity as well. Underlying the interaction of identity with space/place is the, as Marc Agé terms it, non-place nature of the convention center itself. That the convention center does not bear the trappings of a typical anthropological place (such as history or tradition) influences the impact of the performance and the identity created therein. Consequently, the identity held will be challenged by the temporary nature, not just of the event, but also the place which contains it. I attended two comic book conventions in the state of Florida to examine this phenomena using my own experience as part of the study, as well as interviewing other convention attendees and people within my group. I will move through the space of the conventions exploring my personal relation to the identity of Geek and how others perform the identity while trying to explore what does it mean to be Geek?

The course of the argument in Plato s Republic is primarily organized around a single formal engine, the city-soul analogy. To better understand its procedure and the use that Plato might have expected from it, we will seek to understand, in this dissertation, the meanings of proportion and elements employed therein by making more explicit the comparison that Plato himself makes through Socrates: the one between the order of letters in words and the sets of parts that make up units (either in the case of individuals or cities). From this understanding we can address more throughly the tripartions of the city and the soul the dialogue suggests, the theory of desire contained therein and the possible harmonization of our conflicting motivations, which lead to a collective concept of happiness.

In the school there is meeting. If you thought of the nature of a school, you would never have a corridor in a school. You would have a hall in a school. Where it is a meeting place for people not in any way obligated to each other, have no source of being judged. And it becomes in a way the student's classroom. The corridor can never aspire to be a hall. But the hall can aspire to be of such importance equal to that of the library which is probably the most important part of school. Grint, Kristopher. "James Mill's common place books and their intellectual context, 1773-1836." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2014. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/47828/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an intellectual history of James Mill's political thought, which focuses on four specific topics: his ideas on parliamentary reform; on libel law, or the freedom of the press; education, or man's ability to utilise his reason; and on established religion, primarily in the form of Mill's attitude towards the Church of England. At face-value, the thesis' main aim is to contextualize in detail Mill's published writings on these four subjects (which comprise its four chapters) by virtue of comparing them with unpublished manuscript material present in his common place books, which were transcribed as part of this PhD project. Although the chapters are developed in such a way that they can be seen as independent studies of Mill's thought, there are of course more general themes which run through the thesis as a whole, as well as specific links between particular topics. One notable example is the notion that Mill employed ‘dissimulation' in his published writings, that is to say that he did not necessarily express in public the full extent of his ideas, because of a fear that their radical extent would attract intrigue or prosecution from the reactionary governmental or religious authorities in Britain. It is also prudent to note how Mill's well-documented intellectual influences are incorporated into the thesis. By this we are referring to the importance of the Scottish Enlightenment background to Mill's own education and upbringing near Aberdeen and in Edinburgh, and also the doctrine of Utilitarianism he adopted from Jeremy Bentham once in London. The particular nature of the material found in the common place books warrants a full re-evaluation of these influences, as well as an exploration of the possibility that additional influences beyond these two contexts have thus far been understated in studies of Mill. This suggests the value of the study to current Mill scholarship.

Bassi, Serena A. "Italy through the mirror of translation : place, culture and difference in the twenty-first century book market." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2012. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/57594/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis asks how stereotypical images of a foreign country are reinforced or contested through translation in the context of the contemporary consumer book market. Taking Italy and the British publishing market as its focus, it sets out to examine the translation process for one popular genre of Italian fiction and two Italian bestsellers published in Britain after 2000. Gomorra by Roberto Saviano (2006) and Cento colpi di spazzola prima di andare a dormire by Melissa P. (2003) and the so-called ‘new Italian crime fiction’, are three recent Italian publishing phenomena that have been selected for translation into English. Once translated and distributed in the British market, they attracted significant commercial and critical attention in the literary field. How important was the association with stereotypical images of Italy in determining the success of these texts in Britain, a market that is famously resistant to translation? How was the idea of Italy re-negotiated and re-imagined throughout the translation process? In order to provide an answer to the above questions, both the translation and the paratranslation of the Italian texts are investigated. The translation of new Italian crime fiction is examined with a focus on the Italian and the British history of the genre and on its paratranslation. The fascinating implications of the new branding of the author Roberto Saviano, which emerged in the British literary field when Gomorra was translated into English, are explored in the context of both translation and paratranslation. Finally, in analysing the translation of Cento colpi I have focused on the work of the translator, Lawrence Venuti, and particularly on the implicationsthat his ideology of translation has on the idea of Italy and on that of “cultural difference” as they emerge from the target text. This thesis adopts an interdisciplinary theoretical framework, in which theoretical understandings from Translation Studies, Italian Studies, studies of the contemporary book market and media culture are integrated. It uses translation as a method to look into the workings of the contemporary book market and, more generally, to shed light on contemporary representations of Italy that circulate in the large mass mediated textual space through the mirror of translation.

Whybrew, Linda Christine. "The Relationship between Horace's Sermones and Epistulae Book 1: "Are the Letters of Horace Satires?"." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Classics and Linguistics, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/945.

Full text
Abstract:
"Are the Letters of Horace Satires?" (Hendrickson 1897: 313). In response to this question, this thesis investigates whether Horace's Sermones and Epistulae 1 all belong to the genre of satura. Ancient and modern evidence from the use of the terms Sermones, Epistulae, and satura, is surveyed, and is found to be inconclusive, but not to preclude Epist. 1 as satura. The nature of specifically Horatian satura is ascertained from the text of Serm. 1, especially Serm. 1.1 and the explicitly literary Serm. 1.4 and 1.10. The redefinition of Lucilian satura, and its political implications are also considered. To confirm Epist. 1 as satura a sequential reading of the three libelli is undertaken, tracing the evolution of the theme of locus: place, both as geographical location, and as status, place in the social hierarchy, in the context of the socio-political environment of the time of composition. Serm. 1.1 as a programmatic poem is shown to establish Epicurean moderation as a prerequisite for a vita beata. In Serm. 1 Horace's status as client-poet of Maecenas and Octavian initially permits this ideal lifestyle in the Urbs. The misperceptions of outsiders lead to a preference for a life of Epicurean quietude in the rus in Serm. 2, although Horace's aequanimitas is disturbed by urban officia, and abuse of libertas dicendi associated particularly with Stoicism. The ideal of rural withdrawal is reinforced in Epist. 1 through an exploration of appropriate behaviour in relationships with potentes amici. Horace's addressees cover the entire range of the social hierarchy, and in his letters he utilizes the arguments of moral philosophy, thus reconciling poetry and philosophy. He achieves a pragmatic compromise whereby he can enjoy libertas in his role as a poet, while acknowledging that personal libertas and true aequanimitas are still to be attained.

Fordham, Andrew Ian. "Food, art, books : a case study of the cultural politics of rural place branding." Thesis, Open University, 2011. http://oro.open.ac.uk/54664/.

Full text
Abstract:
Using a multi-sited ethnographic case study, this thesis examines the development of rural place brands in three towns in Scotland. Engaging with the literatures on place branding and entrepreneurial governance, and the theoretical work of Pierre Bourdieu, this thesis critically examines how and why the place brands in a rural context were developed; how the places were transformed (reconstructed) through branding; the struggles and contestations within the branding process; and the perceived audiences for such developments. It is argued that whilst there are numerous similarities in the developments of the brands, there are also significant differences to that of urban place branding. This thesis thus problematises the application of theories of branding developed in urban areas to rural contexts. It is also argued that, despite the branding literature suggesting that brands promote a clear, coherent and holistic identity for place (see Kavaratzis, 2005), the development of brands in the current research has been deeply contested, and fraught with various struggles over how the brand (and the place more broadly) should be represented. This thesis thus challenges the extent to which a clear, coherent and holistic identity of the brand (and place) can be established. Finally, whilst it has been argued that place marketing and branding strategies seek to target specific audiences (as was also the case in the current research) (see Gotham, 2002), this thesis argues that in practice, this is a deeply problematic process as the audience of place brands is actually rather diverse. In sum, this thesis makes a significant contribution to our knowledge on place branding by providing an in-depth critical examination of place branding processes in a rural context, which has been all too often neglected by a dominant focus on the urban.

Azarbarzin, Leili F. "Aristotle on the Family: An Analysis of Books I-III of Aristotle’s Politics in reference to Plato’s Republic." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2017. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1503.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper is an analysis of Aristotle’s Politics in its critique of Plato’s Republic in reference to the topics of the ideal state and the role of the family. I focused on books I-III in Aristotle’s Politics to gain a deep understanding on Aristotle’s conception of the state and it’s goals in relation to its citizens as well as his critique on Plato’s ideal state. I also read book V and parts of book III of Plato’s Republic to gain a strong understanding of Plato’s requirements of the ideal state. In exploring the ideal states put forth by Plato and Aristotle, it became clear that the two sources of friction are in the state and the family. The first chapter of this paper discusses the general themes of Aristotle’s Politics such as how the state came to exist and the relationship between the good man and the good citizen. The second chapter offers insight to book V of Plato’s Republic but its majority is a focus on the critique of Plato’s proposed guardian or ruling class. The third and final chapter is an examination of how seriously one should take both Plato and Aristotle in their implications for the state and a tongue-in-cheek analysis of Aristotle’s critique of Plato in relation to the role of philosophy. This paper is concluded by considering the true implications of these philosophers on the role of reason and politics; more specifically considering how much of a role reason can have in promoting the state or the family. In understanding the guidelines of these two ideal states, one is better prepared in discussing the role of the family in modern government and to what extent both the family and the state can thrive together.

Abstract:
Rene Magritte’s painting, "Ceci n'est pas une pomme" depicts an apple, and the "reality" of it. But the realities at the Research Center for the History of the Third Reich are both part of the History of a City and the History of Man. I have tried to deal in my solution with all of the symbolic and pragmatic issues of the project. It is the final exercise of my architectural ideas to the graduate level. Clear attention, however, was given to follow the brief given by the 1985 NIAE International Design Competition. In this manner, the meaning of History and Tragedy are explored through the use of architectural manifestations, that is, the materialization of a "reality". My scheme is one more exploration of my concerns, and also an extension to the search for an architectural attitude. Even though I believe at this time that language in architecture is a conscious decision of the designer, my preoccupation dealt with architectural issues such as building and city, elements and typologies, Platonic forms and spatial relationships, as well as drawings as a tool to express architectural intentions.

A pathway to go from the profane to a village of higher aspirations. A House of Visual Arts and an existing school of architecture flank the pathway as the realm of the mundane is received into the world of the sublime. Rows of trees define streams of space flowing into a reservoir of space, gateways marking the points of transition. From the reservoir, these gateways frame the distant mountains giving the urban room a location. The room itself is essentially empty, for it is hardly a statement but, rather, the preparation for one. The room is for the life of the academic village. Cohen, Benjamin R. "Notes from the Ground: Science and Agricultural Improvement in the Early American Republic." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27318.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is an analysis of systematic studies of the land in the early American Republic, from the 1790s to the 1840s; more specifically, it explores the role scientific and technical practices played within that era's improvement ethic. I argue that science, as seen through the lens of agricultural chemistry and, to a lesser extent, geology, became an important, acceptable, and credible way to interact with early Republic land because it fit within the multivalent improvement ethic of that period. Through a study of the agricultural press, farmers’ diaries, and county and statewide scientific surveys, I examine how scientific and technical practices aided agricultural improvement, how they were promoted or resisted by local farmers, and in what ways they gained social credibility for interpreting and interacting with agrarian nature. Part I, “The Place of Science,” explores how science was interpreted by people. I there ask about the social, moral, instrumental, and literary places of agricultural science in rural culture. Part II, “The Science of Place,” asks instead how science interpreted the land, there studying county and state scientific surveys in Virginia. Underlying the entire work is an exposition of the georgic ethic (as distinct from the pastoral ethic), which emphasizes the labor-based means through which most rural peoples understood their land and ties the moral plea for cultural improvement to the material pursuit of agricultural progress. The story herein introduces the production of an important set of conditions that allowed later scientific developments across the land to have meaning and significance: forms of communication, precedents of organization, field-tested modes of analysis, a tradition of improvement and experimentation, the long-standing search for solutions to soil exhaustion, increasingly mechanistic philosophies of soil composition, a market force to drive all of these, and a unique American political and agricultural environment into which the above could take shape. The lesson is not that the entirety of our modern scientific worldview can be traced to the activities of a disgruntled antebellum American farming class, but that this example of rural science and agricultural improvement provides a fruitful example of what it takes to make a scientific worldview. Thus, arguments about philosophical and conceptual bases for scientizing the land–topics of great importance in the fields of environmental history and various branches of science and technology studies–gain strength and plausibility by reference to the workings of antebellum agents who first argued over the value of using science to define their land. By putting the circulation of agricultural science in the context of early Republic improvement-minded agents, we can better locate agrarian American culture into a post-Enlightenment setting, we are better equipped to recognize how everyday citizens came to treat scientific practices as legitimate means of interacting with their lands, and we have a more developed picture of how morality, materiality, and theory were wedded in the much-revered principles of practice and practicality. The sum of those points highlights how traditional means of managing the land, as with religious doctrine, almanac strictures, the lessons inherited through family lineage by generations of daily practice, or uncodified folk knowledge in general, were being complemented with or displaced by organized, methodical, and systematic–eventually, scientific–practices on the land.

Abstract:
This dissertation consists in an analysis of the poetry in the Plato s dialogue The Republic. The proposal that Plato presents for the poetry has a deeply ethical and political motivation. The poetry (myth) is the main component of the first part of an educational process whose objective is to instruct certain class of citizens responsible both for the security guard and the government of the city idealized in the dialogue. In its works, the poets must follow some norms that obey pedagogical criteria. Such norms are needed to get the poetry to contribute positively for the development of a good and beautiful character. The poetical theory is first approached in Books II and III, but, due to a slight knowledge later clarified, its conclusion could only be reached in the end of the dialogue. Therefore, this work defends that Book X is necessary to conclude the determinations for the poetic art, and that there is a sense of continuity linking the propositions presented in the first period to those of the second stage of the poetical criticism. The first part of this work analyzes the arguments defended in Books II and III, in which Plato initiates the construction of the poetical norms paradigm. The second part analyses the conclusion of the considerations about the poetry presented in Book X.

Abstract:
Since casino liberalization, Macau has been undergoing metaphoric changes that are fundamental, rapid, and far-reaching. This poses a challenge to Macau people to cope with life changing circumstances to the extent of rediscovering their hometown which have changed profoundly as evident by the city‘s ever-changing skyline. Having said so, this study aims to explore the effects of large-scale casino development on Macau residents‘ sense of place, and how their changing sense of place determines their support for casino development. To achieve this study purpose, three interrelated research objectives are laid down for the study. They are (1) to assess the impact of casino liberalization on Macau society, (2) to describe Macau residents’ sense of place amid the casino boom, and (3) to delineate the structural relationship between casino impact, sense of place, place satisfaction, and support for casino development. By using a purely quantitative approach based on a comprehensive resident survey, the study identified both positive and negative casino impact factors as affecting Macau people economically, socially, and environmentally. More importantly, these casino impact factors were also found to exhibit significant predictive power in explaining respondents‘ sense of place intensity, therefore empirically validating a posited relationship between the impact of casino development and inhabitants’ sense of place. The study also found that respondents’ sense of place carried obvious connotations of modernity and exquisiteness because respondents were using everyday vocabularies such as ‘rich’, ‘lively’, ‘developed’, and ‘unique’ to express their perceptions of the new Macau. This brief glossary of words, which characterizes successful urban development, was also found to associate strongly with their sense of place assessments. Finally, the study validated an integrated conceptual model within which the sense of place construct assumes a decisive role in affecting place satisfaction and support for casino development. The contribution of this study lies in the fact it has brought to our attention residents’ sense of place as an important determinant for the success of any large-scale tourism project such as casino development. This study has also provided a new breath to the traditional casino impact studies by taking a new look at an old problem through a cross-disciplinary perspective.

Abstract:
In this dissertation I examine the letterforms on books from the Guarani-Jesuit Reductions, a missionary enterprise of the religious fathers of the Jesus Company, in the River Plate area from 1609 to 1768. The first jesuits arrived in the region in 1585, coming from Peru and Brazil, and despite the difficulties of the early years, they settled the first Reduction in 1609. As soon as they conquered some stability, they communicated intensely with Rome and Madrid, from 1633 to 1645, supplicating for a printing press and the necessary licenses to print in the Reductions. Notwithstanding, it was only around 1700 that they finally achieved their intentions -- and it was not by means of a printing press brought from Europe, but of a printing press built in the missions itself. Before this, books were copied by hand, a craft that continued after the establishment of the printing press. The guarani prints and the guarani manuscripts have a distinguished place in the History of the book and printing in the New World. Reports written by the jesuit fathers from the Reductions generated some consensus that are repeated still today in the historiography of the region, specialised or not in book and printing, about the guaranis\' great ability to copy letters by hand and about the construction of the whole apparatus necessary for printing -- a printing press built with local wood and sorts cast with a metal league from the region. Of the dozen books and some pamphlets that were certainly printed in the Reductions, today it is possible to find copies of only eight titles. I analysed the letterforms in six of these books and in three manuscripts. The analysis made me question if type was really cast in the missions (result of analysing the printed books) and made me point out the variety of manuscript letterforms instead of the duplication of european models (result of analysing the manuscript books). The results are a contribution to the historiography that questions the use of textual documentation as the main source of testimonies about the missionary enterprise, and, above all, the historiography that questions the point of view from which the history of book production and the history of writing in the Guarani-Jesuit Reductions have been told. A point of view that promotes the \"rarity\" of the guarani books instead of the effort for its understanding.

Abstract:
The dependence on natural resources is not a new phenomenon and it has posed issues in undiversified economies. The social impact that the booming of the mining industry has on the local level is still an area in need of investigation. The case study seeks to understand how the platinum mines of the boomtown Rustenburg have impacted the local social fabrics through 22 qualitative interviews in Rustenburg. The city is situated on the North West Province Platinum Belt and produces half of the world's platinum. The boom in the platinum industry is responsible for Rustenburg's influx of people and economic growth. The analysis adopts the assumptions of the Linear Model of the Social Disruption theory and the Psychological Process of the Place Person Process Framework. The central assumption of the Linear Model is that population growth and population density leads to the informal ties of the population being weakened. Meanwhile, the psychological process assumes that groups and individuals relate to a place through psychological interaction. The study finds that the boom of the platinum industry has disrupted the social fabric through a loss in informal ties and the phenomenon of broken families has become common. The influx of people in a combination of weak institutions has led to an unhealthy society where unemployment and the crime rates are high and people are suffering from bad health conditions. It is understood that mining has changed the attitudes of the people toward Rustenburg, and has created a mining mentality. The study contributes to the understanding of the social impact of the resource curse on a local level by investigating how booms in mining industries impact the social fabric on a local level and how the impact is expressed locally. The empirical findings of the study can be beneficial for local stakeholders of Rustenburg with the purpose of improving local policies.

This dissertation, entitled The concept of Place in the didactic book and the teachinglearning process, is focused on the matter of the not so discerning use of the didactic book in the geography classes, its subtle contribution to the citizen formation of the students and the effective learning of the geographic knowledge. The research had the intention to answer the following questions: what have been the conceptions of place brought by the didactic works of regional nature used in the state of Goiás during the early years? How do the teachers absorb the concepts of place pointed by those works and how do they use these concepts during the teaching-learning process? From what has been exposed, the research had as aims: to analyze the practices and the theoretical conceptions brought and propitiated by the didactic books of Geography that have regional characteristics of the state of Goiás and the introduction of these notes in the classrooms of Elementary school concerning the meaning of place; problematize the Geography that is brought by the didactic books, discuss the different basis to the construction of the concept of place in the academic Geography and in the school Geography; to interpret and to analyze the practice of those who works directly with the formative process in the early years – the teacher. In the ambit of the school Geography, especially in the early years, the concept of place is understood as an engine that improves the learning-teaching process, that is why it is important to comprehend how this concept is presented in the didactic books used in the classrooms. The qualitative approach, ruled specially by the dialectic, was used to develop this work. The data collection of the research happened through the documental investigation in the didactic book 32140L1629 endorsed by National Didactic Book Program – 2010 and 2013, PNLD Edict and Didactic book Guide. The analysis of the content that was part of the researched works was sought during the research, in the lights of historicalsocial learning theory and the academic knowledge built about the school Geography. The interview done with an early-year teacher was another methodological procedure adopted in this research. In this dissertation, it‟s found the teacher and the researcher‟s view about the didactic book in constant dialogue with thinkers of the mentioned areas. According to what was researched, by correlating different theoretical positioning about place it is possible for the student to have an apprenticeship close to his/her reality and it also makes possible that this student gets closer to realities that are not so familiar to him/her. In order to this approach can occur, the teacher needs to understand himself/herself as the subject of his/her practice and as a mediator in the knowledge building process. This way, the teacher cannot assign this function to a material that is just a support for him/her.

The domain of contemporary picture books for children, in their multiple forms, is inventive and without formalized borders. It is shared between image and text, and presented as a hybrid form at with movable frontiers between illustrated books, picture books, comic books, and graphic novels. Our references are deliberately restrained to concern French language picture books and their development from 1945 to today, with a significant selection of works from author-illustrators. This makes visible the influences that have shaped today’s position: the status of the child in society, impact of technology, commercial needs, and major artistic trends. The analysis of the relationship between image and text takes us to question the place of the album in the iconotextuel environment. Is it possible to separate its singularity and for us to ask questions of the genre? After tracing the sources of picture books with the meeting dynamic of images and words from the Renaissance to the XXIst century, we analyze the emergence of the contemporary picture book, and its separation from comic books between 1900 and 1939. We can see that the very particular relationship that has developed between the physical book and the functioning of the iconotext, has led to the creation of a type between the two

Abstract:

My study concerns the teacher knowledge of mehankhim, teachers in Israeli high schools entrusted to promote students' moral, civic, and social growth. It examines two mehankhim from a secular Israeli high school who participated in a long-term professional development program in secular Jewish education, centered by traditional and modern Jewish texts. This study is situated within the body of research on teachers' professional development, focusing on the vocation of mehanekh in secular Jewish education, teachers' professional knowledge, and mehankhim's life stories. I suggest that mehankhim are professionals, with a professional practical knowledge unique to them, despite their current lack of specific training for their vocation. One major source of knowledge that informs the practice of today's mehankhim is the historical legacy of the role. A second is the evolution of Israeli public discourse, which demands a corresponding evolution in the undefined "mission statement" of mehankhim, and in their preparation and in-service training. Using the qualitative method of portraiture and relying on narrative analysis, I have drawn portraits of two mehankhim. I completed a full ethnographic survey of the participants in their professional setting, engendering the creation of a multi-layered, comprehensive and esthetic whole. This study examines ways to professionalize the vocation of mehankhim. It offers hope for change in the Israeli public discourse by well-trained Jewish and Arab mehankhim, invigorated with a new popular mandate; it suggests an opportunity for Jewish Israeli mehankhim to collaborate with their American counterparts in Jewish education, giving Jewish texts a central role.

The study is a qualitative literature analysis with the purpose of examining how children and preschool pedagogues were portrayed in picture books that take place in the preschool environment, based on gender perspectives. To define the material, books that take place in the preschool environment had been selected. The purpose of the study was also to examine how relationships between children and preschool pedagogues were portrayed, from a gender perspective. And whether there was a difference between the gender portrayals depending on the year when the book was published. The picture book analysis has created an understanding of how preschool pedagogues can work gender pedagogically with literature as a tool, together with the children. The analysis and the results have shown that there are variations in how gender and gender roles were portrayed in the picture books. It also showed that there are picture books that are gender conscious and that some maintain and enhance gender roles.

Writing the speculative fiction novel, Birthright, and this accompanying exegesis, led me to challenge the validity of the disclaimer usually found in the front matter of most novels that the story is purely imaginary, bears no relationship to reality, with the characters not being inspired by anyone known or unknown to the author. For the first time in my career, I began to consider how writers including myself might frequently revisit themes and ideas which resonate with our lived experiences. I call this restorying, an unconscious process whereby aspects of one's life history are rewritten through one's creative work to achieve a more satisfactory result. Through personal contact, studying authors' accounts of their creative practices, and surveying current literature on narrative therapy, a case is made that, far from being generated purely from imagination, writers' creative choices are driven by an unconscious need to restory ourselves.

Abstract:
This exegesis is prefaced with an introduction to finding the “real” site of remote Aboriginal communities within The Swan Book. An examination of the literature identifies the contextual and conceptual depth of the novel and the critical challenges it raises. Michel Foucault’s related concepts of power and heterotopia, the utopian community and heterotopic sites of deviation and resistance are surveyed in order to establish how sovereignty is exercised in postcolonial Australia. The possibility of ethical relations of power raised within The Swan Book are then considered.
