Abstract:
This research paper examines the shifting role of the Encyclopaedia Britannica as a politicised, Western, gendered (male) account of history. This paper considers the encyclopaedia’s problematic status as a “holy” book or monument to human achievement, and explores destructive abstraction as a method by which this status can be challenged. The paper outlines the conceptual and practical development of my creative work in three distinct chapters. Chapter one explores the shifting role the encyclopaedia has played within culture, as well as the various ways it has been interrogated and challenged in contemporary art practice, with a particular focus on the work of Simryn Gill, Idris Khan, and John Latham. Chapter two examines works by Ann Hamilton, On Kawara, and Titarubi to explore the function reading serves in society and religious practices. Chapter three explores the act of destruction as a form of abstraction in the work of Ann Hamilton, Michelle Nikou, and Simryn Gill.

Abstract:
The aim of this literature review is to investigate what previous research indicates about how students’ reading development is influenced when reading ordinary books or e-books, but also how their attitudes towards reading are influenced. I will also use Henk Linskens’s (2018) work Henke och Bokstäverna som Hoppar to exemplify my perspective on the results from the research. The result of all the research gathered indicates that there are no significant differences in reading development among students using e-books or traditional books. It appears to be slightly better to use traditional books to promote reading comprehension, while e-books seem to promote students’ word knowledge slightly better. In order to achieve a good result in both cases, a more knowledgeable adult is needed to support the student, which follows Vygotsky's socio-cultural perspective. When it comes to students’ attitudes towards reading, e-books create positive attitudes towards reading in general, which could be due to their many opportunities for individualization. However, there are big differences between boys and girls in the matter, where boys benefit from using e-books while reading and girls benefit from using traditional books.

Abstract:
The initial research questions for this practice-based doctoral research project was to ask, "Is it possible to develop a more confident, self-conscious creative voice able to articulate one's identity more clearly through the making of handmade artefacts?"; this thesis applies the methodologies of autoethnography and pedagogy to consider an answer. My original contribution to knowledge through this enquiry is the identification of the ways in which the exploration of identity through autoethnographic, creative and pedagogic methods encourages an expanded field of self-knowledge, self-confidence and sense of creative self.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the potential futures of the scholarly monograph in an increasingly digital environment. By positioning the medium of the book as a major site of struggle over the future of scholarly knowledge production within the humanities, this thesis argues for the importance of experimenting with alternative ways of thinking and performing the academic monograph. In particular, it argues for the importance of experiments that go beyond simply iteratively reproducing established print practices of knowledge production, dissemination and consumption. This is especially important when the present print-based arrangements tend to sustain the interest of established stakeholders, inhibiting wider access to scholarly research and experimentation with new forms of scholarship and scholarly communication. This thesis will examine some of the forms a politics of the book based on openness, remix and liquidity might take. It will draw on some recent experiments in scholarly book publishing—from liquid and living books to anonymous authorship and radical open access—that try to challenge and rethink the book as a fixed and stable commercial object, as well as the political economy and scholarly practices surrounding it. These experiments do so by cutting the book together and apart differently and by exploring experimentation as a specific discourse and practice of critique.

Abstract:
How does the book-object in early modernity participate in the representation of scientific knowledge? How was the reader meant to approach the book and to comprehend its contents? This project starts from the contention that scientific knowledge is not a product simply to be deposited into unmarked containers and transmitted unproblematically. On the contrary, the book, whether literary or scientific, actively shapes and invents objects of scientific knowledge. Sensory, affective and cognitive ways in which the reader is expected to approach the book and its contents are implicit in its formatting of text and image, not to mention margins, presentational material and indices. This project draws from literary and natural scientific traditions of the French and Italian Renaissance in order to study how the early-modern book forms and performs scientific knowledge in various ways. Compelling the reader to interrupt his or her reading and to explore the book’s text and images as if they were objects in their own right, the book-object strives to imitate the experience and method of scientific discovery for the early-modern reader. To this end, touch, appetition, and bodily awareness become as important as sight and critical reasoning in a procedural approach and apprehension of knowledge in and of the book-object. An “aesthetics of discovery”, formed by the book and performed by the reader, is implicit in the book’s careful articulations of text and image.

Sanderson, Jonathan. "Nicholas Culpeper and the book trade : print and the promotion of vernacular medical knowledge, 1649-65." Thesis, University of Leeds, 1999. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3264/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines print culture and the medical book trade during the middle decades of the seventeenth century. I examine a range of vernacular medical books which predate the publication of Nicholas Culpeper's (1616-54) translation of the London College of Physicians' first Pharmacopoeia (1618) in 1649. Culpeper's English version subjected the official medical knowledge of the professional to his caustic commentary, and launched his programme to produce 'the whol Moddel of Physick' in the vernacular. At the same time the involvement of the Fellows of the College with the book trade during the Interregnum is explored. Examination of the Stationers' Register reveal that Presidents of the College were prepared to endorse English translations of scholarly books and new works by non-Collegiate authors. Through this Register and the 'Annals' of the College I show how two astute London stationers were able to gain control of the rights to the College's Pharmacopoeia. The social relationships between Culpeper and his publishers are analysed, as well as the network of agents responsible for the production and publication of Culpeper's books and their reception. I focus on Culpeper's four principal works - his two translations of the College's Pharmacopoeia (1649 and 1653); his herbal, The English Physitian (1652); and A Directory for Midwives (1651). Their presentation (typography and page-layout), dissemination, and reception are also explored. Apparent from the early history of Culpeper's medical books is the commercialism of the book trade in the 1650s. Medical practitioners and writers exploited print culture to promote their name in the medical marketplace and create a public persona. I discuss Culpeper's activities as an editor and writer, and the fluidity of these texts in response to commercial threats from rival publishers. The development of his work through subsequent editions counters the assumption that printing preserves and fixes a text's meaning. This thesis argues that historical bibliography is essential for an understanding of a book's reception and influence, and I show how print culture was significant to the promotion of vernacular medicine in these years.

Abstract:
The art of reading and its application to knowledge acquisition and innovation by elites have been largely neglected by historians of print culture and reading in late imperial China (1368-1911). Unlike most studies, which are concerned more with the implied reader and individual reading experience, the present study assumes that the actual reader and the social, cultural and epistemic dimensions of reading practices are the central issues of a history of reading in China. That is, while the art of reading was internalized by the individual, his learning and application of it had social, cultural and epistemic features. At a time when secular reading practices in Renaissance England were informed by Erasmian principles, Ming literati, regardless of their different philosophical stances, were being trained in an art of reading proposed by Zhu Xi (1130-1200), whose Neo-Confucian philosophy had been esteemed as orthodox since the fourteenth century. Transformations and challenges in interpreting and applying his art did not hinder its general reception among elite readers. Its common employment determined the practitioner’s epistemic frame and manner of knowledge innovation. My dissertation consists of five chapters bracketed with an introduction and conclusion. Chapter One discusses Zhu’s theory of reading and the implied pattern of acquiring and innovating knowledge, based on a careful reading of his writings and conversations. Chapter Two describes the transmission of Zhu’s theory from the thirteenth to the seventeenth centuries. During its transmission, Zhu’s art was reedited, rephrased, and even readapted by both government agencies and individual authors with different intentions and agendas. Chapter Three focuses on the reception of Zhu’s theory of reading by 1500 and argues that the moral end of reading eventually triumphed over the intellectual one in early Ming Confucian philosophy. Chapter Four explores the affinity of Ming philosophers of mind with Zhu’s theory in their reading concepts and practices from 1500 to the mid-seventeenth century. Despite their attempts to separate themselves intellectually from the Song tradition, Ming philosophers of mind followed Zhu’s rules for reading in their intellectual practices. Chapter Five outlines the reading habits and knowledge landscape based on a statistical survey of extant Ming imprints. Despite some deviations, the Ming reading habits and knowledge framework largely accorded with Zhu’s theory and its Ming adaptations. The continuity of reading habits from Zhu’s time to the seventeenth century, I conclude, inspires us to rethink the Ming apostasy from the Song tradition. The particularity of scholarly knowledge acquisition and innovation in Ming-Qing China by the eighteenth century was not invented by Ming-Qing scholars but anticipated by Zhu through his theory of reading. With respect to late imperial China, the history of reading, together with the history of knowledge, is yet to be fruitfully explored. With this dissertation, I hope to be able to make a contribution to the understanding of the East Asian orthodox habit of reading as represented by Zhu’s admirers. By placing my investigation in the context of the history of knowledge, I also hope to contribute to the understanding of the relationship of reading to the way that knowledge evolved in traditional China. Intellectual historians tended to consider the Ming Confucian tradition as having broken off from the Cheng-Zhu tradition, but at least in reading habits and practices Ming elite readers perpetuated Zhu’s theory of reading and the knowledge framework it implied.

Clawson, Kevin Leon. ""Come to the Knowledge of Their Redeemer": The Book of Mormon's Message to the House of Israel." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2019. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8568.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the major themes in the Book of Mormon is the promises of the Lord to the house of Israel. Even before Lehi and his family left the promised land, Lehi and Nephi prophesied of the future scattering and gathering of Israel. After the family of Lehi arrived on the Americas, prophets continued to teach about God’s covenants with Israel. The destiny of the house of Israel was a major theme in the books of 1 and 2 Nephi, and also at the end of the Book of Mormon in the teachings of Jesus Christ, Mormon, and Moroni. In Lehi’s prophecy about the house of Israel in 1 Nephi 10, he prophesied that the future remnants of the house of Israel would be scattered and then defined how they would be gathered together again. They would do so by coming to the knowledge of their Lord and Redeemer (see 1 Nephi 10:14, emphasis added). When teaching about the house of Israel, many prophets taught similar principles as Lehi. Additionally, many prophets—including Nephi, Jacob, Alma, Samuel, Jesus Christ, Mormon, and Moroni—alluded to Lehi’s same phrase when they taught about the house of Israel during their own ministries. In the various sermons about the covenants of God with the house of Israel, several prophecies and principles were repeated. All of the major writers on the plates knew that the remnant of Israel would be scattered. They also taught that in the latter days, the gospel would go forth first to the Gentiles, who would in turn gather the scattered remnants of Israel. The instrument and tool by which they would be gathered would be the writings of the Nephite prophets – the Book of Mormon. Most important, the Gentiles and house of Israel would be gathered by coming to the knowledge of Jesus Christ as their Redeemer. The Book of Mormon prophets understood these teachings and engraved them on the plates to come forth to the world in the latter days. This thesis surveys the teachings of the prophets in the Book of Mormon about the gathering of the house of Israel. It also discusses the allusions and references to Lehi’s prophecy about how the Gentiles and house of Israel will be gathered – by coming to the knowledge of Jesus Christ, their Lord and their Redeemer.

Full text
Abstract:
From a sociocultural perspective, individuals learn best from contextualized experiences. In preservice teacher education, contextualized experiences include authentic literacy experiences, which include a real reader and writer and replicate real life communication. To be prepared to teach well, preservice teachers need to gain literacy content knowledge and possess reading maturity. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of authentic literacy experiences as Book Buddies with Hispanic fourth graders on preservice teachers’ literacy content knowledge and reading maturity. The study was a pretest/posttest design conducted over 12 weeks. Preservice teacher participants, the focus of the study, were elementary education majors taking the third of four required reading courses in non-probabilistic convenience groups, 43 (n = 33 experimental, n = 10 comparison) Elementary Education majors. The Survey of Preservice Teachers’ Knowledge of Teaching and Technology (SPTKTT), specifically designed for preservice teachers majoring in elementary or early childhood education and the Reading Maturity Survey (RMS) were used in this study. Preservice teachers chose either the experimental or comparison group based on the opportunity to earn extra credit points (experimental = 30 points, comparison = 15). After exchanging introductory letters preservice teachers and Hispanic fourth graders each read four books. After reading each book preservice teachers wrote letters to their student asking higher order thinking questions. Preservice teachers received scanned copies of their student’s unedited letters via email which enabled them to see their student’s authentic answers and writing levels. A series of analyses of covariance were used to determine whether there were significant differences in the dependent variables between the experimental and comparison groups. This quasi-experimental study tested two hypotheses. Using the appropriate pretest scores as covariates for adjusting the posttest means of the subcategory Literacy Content Knowledge (LCK), of the SPTKTT and the RMS, the mean adjusted posttest scores from the experimental group and comparison group were compared. No significant differences were found on the LCK dependent variable using the .05 level of significance, which may be due to Type II error caused by the small sample size. Significant differences were found on RMS using the .05 level of significance.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis investigates cognition and knowledge in a rich selection of late medieval Florentine commonplace books (zibaldoni) and diaries (ricordanze) with a special focus on Giovanni Rucellai’s Zibaldone Quaresimale. In Chapter Two a new methodology, named Mental Model Framework in History (MMFH), is elaborated. By studying mental processes such as categorisation and decision making, MMFH enables us to study cognition in historical documents. The dissertation is based on a computer-assisted analysis described in Chapter Three . This has brought together a number of technologies (Natural Language Processing, Semantic Web, Text Encoding Initiative) and used them according to the interpretative goals of the MMFH. Chapter Four investigates the knowledge-constructing practice of late medieval Florentines, and concludes that commonplace books and diaries were tools of information management and knowledge transmission. The core chapters study four domains of thinking: space, time, agency and perception. Chapter Five analyses social recognition and judgement in Renaissance Florence and reveals how a new ethical thought took shape, one that prepared the transition to capitalism. By applying decision and game theory, Chapter Six examines horizontal friendship, a bond that functioned as an informal but risky social insurance in Florence. Chapter Seven studies how Florentines used superlatives to construct a hierarchy of the world, with Florence on the top. This was the manifestation of a fierce competition within and outside the walls of Florence, competition that strongly influenced the social and physical environment of the city. By studying selection, periodisation and causal reasoning, Chapter Eight pinpoints the gradual secularisation of the conception of time. The thesis concludes that the late medieval revolution in information culture marked by the gradual transition from an overwhelmingly oral culture to an increasingly literate culture produced quantitative and qualitative changes in human thought. This largely contributed to the birth of modern thought, and to the late medieval transformation of the social and physical environment.

Innovations in building systems over the years have raised the masonry, through large and important works built in the past, allowing the understanding of logic and design of the elements and materials used, as well as its constructive process. The aim of this is to research on the technological process of structural masonry in the course of human history and present it through the project-book called, Structural Masonry: Building Knowledge. With the following objectives: to propose the organization and sequencing for the structural masonry education; provide an overview of the technical principles for the design of architectural design; demonstrate the correlation between technical and adopted system, addressing the advantages and disadvantages to the system, linked to performance quality; and propose equipment designed for architects, engineers and technicians in buildings with didactic, based on a graphical tool. The research methodology is divided into two stages: the first exploratory, from a literature review to determine the basics of building system. The second stage consists of the construction of so-called project-book, Structural Masonry: Building knowledge, grounded in theory the initial research and the use of graphics resources devoted to visual understanding of the system. As a result, the book obtained is developed in chapter 4: Chapter 1 - Historical aspects; Chapter 2 - Materials: Components and elements; Chapter 3 - Project Structural Masonry; and Chapter 4 - Execution of works Structural Masonry. Completing the dissertation is observed that the project-book in question is regarded as an introductory teaching resource to the system in Structural Masonry. Therefore, seeks its verbal content in a clear and clean arrangement, which scored well parts that should be highlighted, bringing dynamism and interactivity to the reader. The continuity in evaluating the use of the book in educational institutions become necessary for insertion of the same in the social context be it under construction, universities, teaching methods, design, and so on.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the intersection between the culture of knowledge and socio-economic conditions of late Ming and Qing China (1550-1800) through the lens of materia medica. I argue that medicine in China during this time developed new characteristics that emphasized the centrality of drugs as objects of pharmacological knowledge, commodities valued by authenticity and efficacy, and embodiment of medical skills and expertise. My inquiry contributes to a deeper understanding of the materiality of healing as a basic condition in early modern societies: on the one hand, textual knowledge about drugs and the substances themselves became increasingly available via the commoditization of texts and goods; on the other hand, anxiety arose out of the unruly nature of potent substances, whose promise to cure remained difficult to grasp in social practice of medicine.

Abstract:
Even though international interconnectedness and globalization evoke the idea of being able to produce and receive knowledge equally all over the world, the maps of knowledge are unevenly distributed on a global scale. My dissertation project analyses this phenomenon by examining the trilateral, multidimensional transfer of African academic literature to Germany and France since the 1950s.The research interest of this project is to determine and organize the entire spectrum of publications from the social sciences and the humanities written by African authors and published in German and French publishing houses. The quantitative analysis on a macro level is based on already existing qualitative studies in the field. The quantitative analysis and the classification of the results give valuable knowledge about continuities and discontinuities in the publication of African academic literature over the span of six decades (1950-2012). The research further examines and elaborates upon geographical, thematic, and temporal profiles of the publishing houses as well as their personal, editorial, and linguistic preferences. By means of collecting, filtering, processing, and visualizing the data, it is possible to find out what kind of “academic Africa” has finally reached the two national book markets. This approach helps to identify new hypotheses and interpretations concerning the circulation of African knowledge in general through the specific example of academic literature from the social sciences and the humanities. Providing important theoretical and practical approaches for this project, the concept of cultural transfers is an established approach for analysing cultural border crossings between countries and regions. The methodological approach combines different methods and, for the data processing, includes examples from the digital humanities to realize an all-embracing reconstruction of the entire transfer process in both a quantitative and qualitative sense

Abstract:
The Crosier monastery of Hohenbusch, situated between Cologne and Aix-la-Chapelle, was dissolved in 1802, on the occasion of the secularization of church property. About 130 manuscripts and early prints from the canonry’s library survived in the diocesan library of Cologne, as well as in libraries in Munich, Brussels, New York etc. An inventory of 265 confiscated books, drawn up on behalf of the French administration in 1801, represents the only description of the former monastery library. The study attempts a reconstruction of the library based on this inventory, and on the material properties of the extant books. Script, book illumination, binding, ownership records and marginal notes in the books are therefore described. An analysis of the contents of the known books shows that they still reflect the history, spirituality, and intellectual bias of the canonry. The German metaphor ‘Wissensraum’ (knowledge space) shall help to approach the social and cultural life of the Crosiers. Perceived as a cultural concept beyond all restrictions of space, the metaphor aims to describe the library as a dynamic instrument which allows generating new knowledge based on existing information. A look on two segments of the library, the first up to the year 1520, the second up to 1700, shows how the monastery changed: Starting in a spiritual and pastoral orientation, it became an important house for the spiritual formation of novices, while at the end, due to its increasing land ownership, and prosperity, legal and administrative questions predominated.

Abstract:

It is notorious the publishing market role in the book production, being this a traditional informational support to society. It is noticed that the publishing market has undergone significant changes in its production methods to add the digital publications. This research studied the national book publishing market focused on publishing companies that produce digital books, with the objective of building prospective scenarios for the digital book market in our Brazil. Integrating into its literature review, knowledge and strategic information management elements with prospective scenarios studies. For that, key variables and actors in the digital book market were identified, their respective interactions were analyzed and prospective scenarios for the digital book publishing market in Brazil were elaborated. It was characterized as bibliographic, descriptive and qualitative-quantitative research, using a questionnaire as a data collection tool. For the data analysis, this research utilized the principles and tools from Michel Godet’s Scenario Building methodology. It was evidenced that the publishing companies showed good perspectives in regard to the digital book market, however they don’t believe that in the future digital book sales will be equivalent or even surpass the printed book sales. It was found that the publishing companies are considering reformulating their publishing strategies for digital books. It indicated that the most influential variables in the publishing market are external variables: culture, economy and legislation; and that the most influential actors are also external: readers, government, school and library. Based on the bibliographic research, information collected through the questionnaire and the results generated by specific software that uses Godet’s Scenario Building Methodology for processing variables and actors, three prospective scenarios were constructed for the digital book market in Brazil: a most likely scenario, an optimistic scenario, and a pessimistic or crisis scenario as recommended in the methodology. The final result was a vision of the possible transformations that could occur in the future of this sector, promoting a prospective reflection for all the actors that are part of the digital book chain as publishers, schools, libraries, universities and readers.

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes the legal, social, technological, and cultural environment that gave rise to Google's library partnership program in order to propose an institutional corrective to Google's project to digitize cultural heritage. Interview research done with those actively involved with Google's project revealed the need for a history of the present. The class action settlement proposed sweeping changes to copyright warranting a quick response by a community of scholars seeking to advance a balanced vision of Anglo-American copyright, one where the public benefit to use and appropriate works is weighted alongside private incentives to create. The process created the conditions for institutional renewal in the public sphere through the creation of a Digital Public Library of America. By combining archival, critical legal, and interview research methods, this dissertation provides a narrative that is both analytical and deeply contextual. Google's digitization partnership in France is contrasted with its library partners program in the United States, examining Google's work in light of competing visions of intellectual property within a trans-Atlantic context.

Bodman, Sarah. "Towards a community of artists' books : extending international knowledge and debate in the field of artists' books through practice-research." Thesis, University of the West of England, Bristol, 2018. http://eprints.uwe.ac.uk/34118/.

Abstract:
The field of activity in artists’ books – artworks in the form of a book - has evolved over the last sixty years into a significant, international contemporary arts practice. Many artists, especially those new to the field, search for the means of situating their practice and extending their knowledge. Artists seek answers on how and where they can connect with other practitioners, increase their knowledge of, and place themselves within the international field. They need to know how and where they can learn to create, market, exhibit, contextualise and sell their work to the public. These needs have informed the development of the research question: How can practice-informed, participatory research develop and extend knowledge and debate in the international field of artists’ books? This question is predicated on the needs of a wide range of artists’ books practitioners, and many others with whom their practice is interwoven: librarians, researchers, students, curators, educators and the public. The following DPhil commentary offers a post-rationalisation of some of the issues and solutions for connecting artists’ books internationally, based upon my research and the network hub I have established at UWE, Bristol. In the text, I reflect upon my contribution to new knowledge through offering examples of artistic and curatorial practice, research and publications that have raised awareness in relation to specific interventions in Australia, Brazil, Europe, Iraq, South Africa and the USA. This DPhil submission discusses the research aims outlined within the narrative, under the heading Connecting Artists’ Books - The Findings, in relation to the evidence submitted in the accompanying portfolio of publications. The portfolio includes samples of authored books, edited publications, published articles and artists’ books created. These have been collated under the related headings of: practice, reporting on the field, curatorial, artefacts. I will use the following commentary to explore and analyse the contemporary position of the artist’s book, in order to reflect upon how its creators and audiences have been rhizomatically interwoven into my research investigations and how the participants have benefitted. The analysis outlines contributions made to new knowledge through some of the interventions I have made as a practitioner, publisher, curator and writer. It identifies examples of themes of practice discovered, revealed and connected through these interventions and their impact upon the field of artists’ books today.

Abstract:
In the course of this thesis I engage with the recent academic consensus that Pliny’s Natural History should no longer be regarded as a work of pedantic compilation, but should instead be understood as a work of ethical and intellectual coherence. The central aspect of my engagement is the investigation of the tensions, epistemic and social, that appear to be present in the formation of much of the knowledge that Pliny represents. The examples I use are taken mainly from the books on astronomy and agriculture, and include knowledge of eclipses, agriculture, herbs, and portents. I have taken a number of different, but related, approaches in seeking to understand knowledge-transactions in the Natural History; they can be generally categorised as belonging either to the field of the Philosophy of Science, or of STS (Science and Technology in Society studies). In applying methods developed in these fields I hope to problematise not just Plinian representations of social and knowledge-groups, but also to interrogate the basis of the knowledge that is reflected in the Natural History. As well as examining specific episodes of knowledge-construction (an eclipse before a battle, a puzzling encounter with rustic herb-growers, a multiple birth in Ostia), I examine Pliny’s concern with luxuria with a view to understanding more fully both the particular knowledge that informs his ethical judgements, and how his treatment of this knowledge helps articulate his perspective on Man, Nature, and the divine.

Abstract:
In much of the historiography surrounding print culture and the book trade, the worldliness of print remains a point of common emphasis. Indeed, many influential studies either assume or actively present the history of print as part of a broader ‘secularization thesis’. Recently, however, historians have challenged these narratives, recognizing the central role of religious print as a driver of growth within the book trade and discussion within the nascent ‘public sphere’. Yet the scholarship into ‘religion and the book’ remains fragmentary, focused on individual genres or persons, with no unified monograph or standard reference work yet to emerge. This dissertation addresses some of the barriers to synopsis by investigating the long-term print output of the largest social and professional group engaged in evangelizing Christianity to the public: the clergy of the Church of England. By focusing on the clergy, this dissertation evades the usual narrow focus on genre. In the past, book-historical and bibliographic studies have relied heavily on a priori classification schemes to study the market for print. While sufficient in the context of relatively well-defined genre categories, such as printed sermons, the validity of these classification schemes breaks down at the wider level, for example, under the conceptual burden of defining the highly fluid and wide-ranging category of ‘religious works’. This dissertation begins to remedy such problems by modelling the print output of a large population of authors who had the strongest stake in evangelizing Christianity to the public through print. It utilizes the latest techniques in the field of digital humanities and bibliometrics to create a representative sample of the print output of the Anglican clergy over the ‘long’ eighteenth-century (here 1660-1800). Based on statistical trends, the thesis identifies a crucial period in the history of clerical print culture, the first four decades of the Hanoverian regime. The period is explored in detail through three subsequent case studies. By combining both traditional and digital methods, therefore, the dissertation explores clerical publishing as a phenomenon subject to evolution and change at both the macro and micro level. The first chapter provides an overarching statistical study of clerical publishing between 1660 and 1800. By combining data from two bibliographical datasets, The English Short-Title Catalogue (ESTC), and the prosopographical resource, The Clergy of the Church of England Database (CCED), I extract and analyse a dataset of clerical works consisting of almost 35,000 bibliographic records. The remaining chapters approach the thesis topic through primary research-based case studies using both print and manuscript sources. The case studies were selected from the period identified in the preceding statistical analysis as a crucial transitional moment in the history of clerical publishing culture, c.1714 to 1750. These case studies form chapters 2, 3, and 4, each of which explore a different aspect of a network of authors who worked under the direction of the bishop of London, Edmund Gibson (1723-1748), during the era of Whig hegemony under Sir Robert Walpole. Finally, an appendix outlines the methodology used in chapter 1 to extract the sample of clerical printed works from the ESTC. Overall, the thesis demonstrates the profound influence of the clergy on the development of English print in the hand-press period. It thus forms both a historiographic intervention against the secularization thesis still implicit in discussions of print culture and the book trade, as well as providing a cautionary critique of the revisionism which has shaped recent investigations into the Church of England.

Abstract:
An essay that investigates the basis and possible effects of certain formulations in the upper-secondary curriculum that emphasise entrepreneurial skills. Such skills are to be promoted in pupils, with the aim of their being able to start and operate businesses in the future. The purpose is to examine why the curriculum contains these formulations, whether it is possible or desirable for teachers to implement them in their instruction and what this might mean for the pupils, their education, the professional world and society as a whole. The essay is based on a discussion of the novel Yarden (“The Shipyard”) by Kristian Lundberg, which the author of this essay and a group of pupils read in autumn 2017. The exploratory aspect of the essay develops out of this story and the experience of the contrast between what is perhaps the goal and purpose of the instruction, and the writings about entrepreneurship contained in the curriculum. The result is a criticism of the neoliberal policy that created market-adapted schooling. The essay also questions the belief that we can educate people for a hypothetical future. Finally, it points to the necessity of reforms that can extract schools from the market.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the early field of library knowledge in Sweden between 1912 and 1939 (circa) through the lens ofFoucault’s archaelogy using a number of official documents (reports, bills, and statutes) as well as a number of articlesand speeches published in the journal Biblioteksbladet (founded 1916). It seeks to answer the question of how it becamepossible to form a field of knowledge, which external relations structured and enabled the field to exist, and which internalrelations of power and authority made it possible for librarians, state officials, ministers of education, and other experts toagree and disagree on the proper management of public libraries during the period.

Municipal policy-makers have embraced the promise of the innovation-based "Next Economy" as the latest policy prescription for growth. However, recent evidence suggests that the agglomeration of high-skill, high-wage industries is associated with increased socioeconomic divergence and pressures on the urban land market. This thesis focuses on San Francisco, as a city that is increasingly divided by the dividends of its own growth. This thesis asks, given what we know of the past dotcom trajectory, what can the City of San Francisco learn about managing rapid economic development in an era of hyper capital mobility, with the goal of protecting vulnerable populations in the housing market, preserving diversity, and promoting a broader distribution of prosperity in the future? Using the recent Central Market Payroll Tax Exclusion program as a point of departure, I show how short-term wins can distort a city's valuation of longer-term social goals, and in so doing, I highlight the need to address growth management from a longer-term perspective of economic resilience.
