Hamish Muir says that, " Every type job is experiment" (P,Bil'ak, www.typotheque.com). Designers are using experimental approaches to book covers which is one of the many graphic design areas where we encounter with fonts and they are trying to keep their designs alive and different via innovative solutions. Typographic approaches are changing with today’s technological developments and experimental researches affects book covers too. Developments in software regarding design enable using many applications simultaneously. Experimental researches, discoveries and interpretation of typography and images in an unexpected way empower communication. Different is always appealing. Therefore designers choose to do attractive and marketable designs and lay the foundation of new on this path which started as experimental. Definition of typography, common application areas and book covers which is one of these areas will be examined within this study and analyzes about usage of experimental typography will be conducted. Experimental approach process, its result and affects will be investigated and findings about necessity of experimental typography will be tried to find. Keywords: experimental typography, digital age, book cover design.

Abstract:
Purpose The massive growth in the number of book titles has made publishers think about how to attract a customer’s attention to particular books. This is the reason why the book cover plays an important role as a tool of communication with the reader. The research question of this exploratory study is whether the preference given by readers to book cover colors is different across genders and age groups when they choose the book in an online bookstore by its cover. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach The experiment in a bookstore and a library was done. Each respondent was asked to choose one book from our sample of 18 books and a mobile eye tracking laboratory was set up in order to find out the respondents’ basic gazing data. After conducting an experiment with bookstore and library visitors, the results showed that younger women tend to select a book by its cover (when the time for selection is not limited) statistically significantly faster than men of the same age group. The difference disappears with age. Findings The data of the experiment suggested that women from the age group 18-35 prefer books with cool color covers and the preference disappears with age; accordingly, men in the age group 56+ prefer books with warm color covers. The preference was not seen in younger age groups. The analysis of data on the number of choices for each cover and the time spent looking at each of them revealed a significant positive correlation between the women’s preferences in selecting covers and the time women spend looking at them; however, there was no such correlation in the case of men’s data. Originality/value The study has shown that the reader’s book choice is at least partly influenced by the cover color. The preference given to cool and warm colors and the speed of decision making show certain differences across genders and age groups. The result contributes to knowing how to create book covers more adopted to reader’s needs.

Abstract:
During the American hardcover revolution, in the 1980s and 1990s, Alfred A. Knopf established itself as the leading publishing house in book design. Founded in New York in 1915, Knopf has been the recipient of many literary prizes and in 1999 was awarded the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Corporate Leadership Award, a prize that recognizes forward-thinking organizations that have been instrumental in the advancement of design by applying the highest standards. Knopf made a name for itself using quality in design along with quality in writing as a strategy for its long-lasting success. One of the main people responsible for this success has been the graphic designer Chip Kidd, one of the most renowed American book cover designers alive. Kidd started working at Knopf in 1986 and soon became the go-to designer for well-known writers such as Michael Crichton, Haruki Murakami, and James Ellroy. His work shows an intuitive understanding of the narrative and a unique and deep connection between text and paratext. Kidd stretches the visual boundaries between words and visuals, asking readers to bridge the gap between what they read and what they see. His covers leave the image open to interpretation; this deliberate lack of definition engages contemporary readers more than traditional covers do. This article illustrates, through the analysis of a selection of the most significant covers designed by Kidd, how his work at Knopf helped create a revolution and shape a new visual language in American book design.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine how and how often athletic girls were represented on the cover art of young adult (YA) sport fiction. In this research, 154 YA sport fiction books were analyzed using quantitative content analysis. Using existing sport research and theory focused on women’s representation in sport media, the researchers developed a coding scheme to assess cover art for each of the following categories: (a) presence and racial representation of female character/s on cover; (b) portrayal of female body on cover (whole body, partial body/with head, or partial body/without head); (c) portrayal of female character as active or passive; (d) portrayal of female character in or out of athletic uniform; (e) portrayal of female character in or out of the sport setting; (f) presence of sport equipment; and (g) type of cover. Findings revealed that 81% of the book covers had a female character in which 29% of the covers displayed the whole body, 47% displayed partial body/with head, and 23% displayed partial body/with no head of the female character. Only 0.06% of the book covers had a female character of color. Approximately 31% of the female characters were displayed in active positioning, 58% in athletic attire, and 44% in the sport setting. Of the books reviewed, 55% displayed equipment on the cover. The findings indicate that athletic girls have few images on YA sport fiction cover art that accurately represent their athleticism, and there is a clear absence of diverse representation. It is critical that those responsible for the design and layout of book covers clearly represent active females in action, in uniform, and in the sport context.

Abstract:
Research Summary Reduction and condensation represented an important technical diversity in the design processes, which are usually described as complex and overlapping, through which designers try to reach the functional and aesthetic goals of the publication. Book covers are considered a fertile field to show the possibilities that can be highlighted in the field of design, which the current research tried to penetrate its paths on. According to several axes. The first chapter was organized according to themes, the research problem was formulated according to the question: 1- What are the functional and aesthetic outcomes of reduction and condensation in printed cover designs? The importance was determined according to two dimensions: cognitive and applied. And it can provide insights into the mechanisms of reduction and condensation in print design, which will provide the design (environment) with what enhances its development. As for the second, it can enhance the applied aspects in its functional and aesthetic dimensions, which means an expansion of the ability to work within the environment of designing publications and the cover as a model for it. The research objectives also included: 1- Reveal the reality of the use of formal reduction and condensation in the designs of printed covers. The research moved in the following limits of knowledge: A- The objective limit / the use of shorthand and formal condensation in the designs of printed book covers. B - The spatial limit / covers of Iraqi books issued by the House of Cultural Affairs (Baghdad). C - The time limit / 2002 until 2004 AD. Defining terms related to the research procedures were defined, and the second chapter included the axes of the functional dimension, the aesthetic dimension, content and expression through reduction and condensation, then the indicators of the theoretical framework. The sample and the research tool also analyzed samples, which amounted to (3) samples that were analyzed according to a form prepared for this purpose, and reviewed the results, conclusions, recommendations and suggestions, and the results came in: 1. Excessive use of tonal reduction processes for the image used, as in model (2). Where it varies by one color value. This use is for purposes including diversity in the design process or to draw attention to what this kind of move away from the repetition that we find in the uses of images employed in the designs of the covers. 2. General weakness in the designs as in model (1) in terms of balancing events between: shape and space (total area) written patterns and the basic elements forming the design and the color relations adopted in the designs.

Abstract This paper shows how book design responds to the Nobel’s prestige. Using previously unpublished materials from German publishing archives, I explore how the Nobel Prize is accompanied by the requirement to design iconic books. This unique material documents how different players in the publishing industry exchange ideas about ‘Nobel Prize-appropriate’ book design. This applies, for example, to the illustrations for an essay by Octavio Paz, designed covers for Nadine Gordimer, and the pictorial representation of Günter Grass’s and Tomas Tranströmer’s ‘life and work’.

Abstract:
Abstract Older adults are underrepresented and rarely appear in major roles in children’s literature. According to developmental intergroup theory, numerically smaller groups are likely to become targets of stereotypes and prejudice. Because parental ageist attitudes are related to those of their children, and parents typically choose their children’s literature, we investigated parental preferences for books featuring older and younger adults and what factors might predict this preference. In an online survey, 176 parents of children aged 12 or younger rated children’s book covers featuring a child and a prominent younger or older adult. There were two identical versions of each book cover on which only the age of the adult varied. Each respondent viewed covers featuring older and younger adults, but only saw one version of each cover (i.e., counterbalanced design). Parents indicated their preference for the books by stating how much they and their children would like the book and how likely they would be to buy it. Stereotypical expectations regarding the books’ storylines were rated on a semantic differential scale (e.g., modern vs. old-fashioned). Results revealed that there were no significant differences in preferences for books featuring younger, compared to older adults. However, a stronger difference in preference for books featuring younger, over older adults was predicted by the extent of stereotypical expectations regarding the storylines. In particular, this preference was stronger in parents who expected stories with older adults to conform to prevailing ageist stereotypes, suggesting that ageist expectations may deter some parents from books featuring older adults.

Abstract:
The graphic designs proposed by Polish publishers cannot be compared neither in number, nor in diversity to those presented by Margaret C. Sullivan in Jane Austen Cover to Cover: 200 Years of Classic Book Covers. Nevertheless, they are a valuable and still undiscussed source of knowledge on the Polish reception of Austen’s novels. Further information on this subject is provided in the first part of the paper by a compilation of book series in which some or all of the texts by Austen have appeared since the 1990s. The analysis of the book covers takes into consideration the relation between the design and the content of the narrative as well as the character of the artwork and its origin. The most popular were 19th century paintings (portraits, genre scenes, less frequently landscapes), film stills from the movie adaptations and floral patterns. As one of the aims of the study was to answer the question how the covers direct the reading process and place the text in the literary tradition, the remarks on the publishers’ choices were supplemented with the readers’ reviews. In the conclusion, it was suggested how the potential, new editions could be designed to stand out from the former ones.

In this context and that pluralism, the presented designs focused on this aspect, which gave the researcher room to research the reality of this method that meant that orientation. Based on the foregoing, the researcher found that the problem of her research is summarized in the following question: Did this method perform their design role by employing plastic artwork in the designs of book covers? And did the designers follow the design rules to achieve this.

The aim of this paper is to analyse and compare the graphic elements present on book covers published in Croatia from 2012 to 2018, and compare the data with the graphic elements on book covers from five other European book markets. Hofstede’s model of cultural dimensions was used in the research to examine the ways in which the design of book covers is influenced by culture. The graphic elements on book covers from Croatia and a sample of five European countries were compared using the visual content analysis method. Element frequency scores were correlated with indexes from Hofstede’s model of national culture and interpreted on the basis of the existing literature using the chi-squared test. Both the quantitative and qualitative analyses were carried out on the sample of 633 book covers (using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences [SPSS] and a custom-made web application, respectively).

Abstract:
Yi Doyeong’s cover images emerged in tandem with the rise of new novels in the late 1900s, gaining prominence in the 1910s. Initially serving descriptive purposes by depicting story introductions and main characters, they drew inspiration from Joseon Dynasty printmaking traditions. However, Yi’s approach evolved significantly with the commercialization of novels, exemplified by his impactful designs for Haingrakdo (Dongyangseowon, 1912) and Okhogiyeon (Bogeupseogwan, 1912). These covers introduced symbolic imagery and dramatic scenes, enhancing reader engagement. Furthermore, Yi’s cover designs underwent further innovation with the adaptation of Japanese novels into Korean literature, such as Tokutomi Roka’s Hototogisu and Kikuchi Yuho’s Onogatsumi. Noteworthy examples include Dugyeonseong (Bogeupseogwan, 1912), an adaptation of Hototogisu, Ssangokru (Bogeupseogwan, 1914), an adaptation of Onogatsumi, and Okjoonghwa (Bogeupseogwan, 1913), inspired by Cho Jung-hwan’s Bulgyeogui, the translated novel of Hototogisu. These covers revolutionized novel design by integrating elements from original Japanese novels, imagery from Subsequent cover images such as Chaebonggambyeolgok (Pakmunseogwan, 1914) and Okjunggain (Singuseorim, 1914) continued to innovate, embracing a more modern book design aesthetic characterized by simplicity, symbolic iconography, and metaphorical imagery.

Abstract:
The first novel by Frances Burney, Evelina, Or, a Young Lady’s Entrance into the World, published in 1778, has enjoyed long-standing popularity, having never gone out of print in English. A distinct cluster of its editions appeared at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century. This period in book history was marked by the creative work of private-press book designers, printers, binders, and illustrators inspired by the Aestheticism, Arts and Crafts, and Art Nouveau movements. Even though their pioneering work was destined for narrow circles of collectors and connoisseurs, it profoundly influenced the development of both industrial and artists’ book design, heightening the awareness of books’ aesthetic appeal. The fin de siècle was a time of nostalgia for idealized pre-industrial society, symptomatic of Victorian and Edwardian escapism, which found its expression in lavish book ornaments and illustrations executed in the Directoire and Louis XVI styles. Late 19th - early 20th-century Evelinas, illustrated and decorated by Aubrey Beardsley, Arthur Rackham, and Hugh Thomson, produced by Dent, Newnes, and Macmillan, reflect a profound influence that innovative private presses had on general publishing practices and the quality of industrially produced books. These Evelinas, beautifully illustrated, bound in decorative covers, and well-printed, exemplify both the newly awakened interest in the book’s physical make-up and aesthetical aspects and the late-Victorian and Edwardian escapist nostalgia characteristic of fin de siècle publishing.

Abstract In the present study, we investigate how the relationship between human and nature is rendered as Norwegian children’s book author Maria Parr’s novel Keeperen og havet [Lena, the Sea and me] is translated into Danish, English, French, German, and Swedish. Our focus is mainly on book cover images, and methodologically we use concepts and tools from Kress and van Leeuwen’s Grammar of visual design. Nature and landscape are prominent in Parr’s œuvre, which is set in the Western part of Norway, where mountains and the sea are always present. Results show that the French cover positions itself as the most ecocentric one, whereas the Swedish and the German covers are much more anthropocentric.

However, it was precisely at this time that a series of children’s books with a modest design at affordable prices, such as the so-called “one-penny” series “Books for the Bairns”, emerged. Ideologist and permanent editor of Books for the Bairns William T. Stead was a well-known journalist, founder and editor-in-chief of periodicals, public figure, child rights defender and a fighter against child prostitution. In 1912 he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, but scandalous reports, imprisonment, and his interest in spiritualism made W. Stead’s im- age controversial. The concept of the series, created by Sted, is based on a combination of an adapted simplified literary translation and a detailed step-by-step visual story that accompanies the text. The chief illustrator and visual co-author of W. Sted was the Irish artist B. Le Fanu (Brinsley Le Fanu, 1854–1929). For B. Le Fanu, the illustration of the series was the biggest art project. At his time, B. Le Fanu was known for the illustrations to the works of his father — Sheridan Le Fanu, one of the founders of the Irish mystical novel. They have the characteristic features of the Victorian era. Making illustrations for children’s books, B. Le Fanu does not lose their fantastic nature, but combines them with a realistic drawing. Each cover of the series represents one of the main characters of the book. A simple but vivid picture, one or two characters on the cover, a landscape or interior outlined by several elements — that’s what the covers by B. Le Fanu were like. None of them are decorated with patterns or ornamental details. The artist consistently implemented the concept of simplicity and clarity suggested by W. Sted, but not primitiveness. The best volumes in the series are his illustrations of L. Carroll’s “Alice’s in Wonderland” and M. Servantes’s novel “The Adventures of Don Quixote”. The “Books for the Bairns” series, although not exquisitely designed and illustrated, has become a model for children’s literature publishers for half a century and inspired the appearance of similar series of cheap children’s books in Western Europe and also Russia and Ukraine.

Abstract:
Introduction. The article discusses the features of Bashkiria’s printed matter as of the 1920s–1930s through the lens of typographics and artistic design. Goals. The work analyzes design patterns, features of font compositions, and identifies the influence of Constructivism on the shaping of their stylistic essentials through specific examples of book covers, magazines, and posters published in the 1920s–1930s in the Republic of Bashkortostan. The authors show how the synthesis of European trends and national traditions of Arabic writing determined the originality of the then Bashkortostan’s graphic designs. Results. The article shows how the ornamental character of Arabic script was transformed into dynamic compositions of covers and title pages characteristic of Constructivism. Conclusions. Nowadays, the public are again trying to outline ways to develop the national book art. Therefore, the experience and traditions from the printing art of early 20th-century Arabic and Cyrillic editions are again in demand. Nobody doubts the significance and greatness of the national cultural heritage, the need to develop it, the need to understand what happened through the prism of national consciousness. The appeals to artistic and aesthetic ideas, creative experiments of the Russian hinterland, traditions that existed in other republics and peoples at the beginning of the 20th century do enrich the history of domestic graphic design. All these together serve sources of inspiration for contemporary art experts, book artists and design practitioners.

Abstract:
This study focuses on one of the central issues that is are overlooked in the qualitative artistic research: the relationship of the literary text with the attached color text, specifically the cover text, through one sample- the novel Hot Maroc by the Moroccan writer Yassin Adnan in its two translations into French and English versus the two original Arabic texts. The study notices that the artistic overlap between the aesthetics of the textual content and the aesthetics of the textual color content constitutes an exceptional model in raising an unaddressed deep debate between form and content that concerns a broad public of recipients. The qualitative test that I conducted between the covers of the novel Hot Maroc in the forms of their artistic revelations led me to draw amazing conclusions regarding the color impact of the cover artistry on the novel's popularity. The research discusses the following issues: the artistic criteria that support the credibility of the work; the artistry of the design of the cover by the Arab publishing houses, and the rate of concordance and compatibility between the form and content to achieve the joy of the work; the criteria of the foreign publishing houses in the design of the cover; the differences between the criteria of the two cultures in producing the book covers in general and the cover of Hot Maroc in particular; the fame and spread of the work and its public spread. The study concludes that the book-cover design has a significant impact on the receivers of the work, and recommends that that the Arab publishing houses promote their paper culture, and come up with a plan of what we agree to call 'cultural marketing'.

In an area where only a handful of books exist, Design Criteria for Mosquesis a welcome addition. A follow up of sorts to Kahera’s Deconstructing theAmerican Mosque (2002), it was hoped that this text would present new material and a fresh analysis in addition to serving as a guide for design. Thefive-chapter book covers mosques built in North America and Europe fromthe early 1920s onwards and incorporates many images and architecturaldrawings, including many from the author’s design office. Several overallissues related to inconsistency, however, undermine its potential. The greatestone is that of voice, a common enough problem when a book is writtenby multiple authors – the text fluctuates between didactic and spare guide listsfor planning and building a mosque to a philosophical discourse on the meaningof each issue related to designing contemporary mosques. The imagesand drawings could have mediated between the two polarized voices. The useof images, if explained in the text or even in subtitles, could have faciliatedthe discourse and related the ideas to the guideline lists.Yet this is not the case, for the images and drawings (of inconsistentquality and often with illegible dimensions) are included in the text’s bodybut seldom referenced in the text. The captions are also non-explanatory,thereby leaving the reader to guess at their relevance to the discourse andthe lists ...

Abstract:
Purpose – The aim of this study is to analyse the disciplinary coverage of Thomson Reuters' Book Citation Index database focusing on publisher presence, impact and specialisation. Design/methodology/approach – The authors conducted a descriptive study in which they examined coverage by discipline, publisher distribution by field and country of publication, and publisher impact. For this purpose the Thomson Reuters' subject categories were aggregated into 15 disciplines. Findings – Humanities and social sciences comprise 30 per cent of the total share of this database. Most of the disciplines are covered by very few publishers mainly from the UK and USA (75.05 per cent of the books), in fact 33 publishers hold 90 per cent of the whole share. Regarding publisher impact, 80.5 per cent of the books and chapters remained uncited. Two serious errors were found in this database: the Book Citation Index does not retrieve all citations for books and chapters; and book citations do not include citations to their chapters. Originality/value – There are currently no studies analysing in depth the coverage of this novel database which covers monographs.

Abstract:
For the first time, there is presented the comprehensive analysis of the works of Soviet artists of book of the second half of the 1920s, engaged in the book design of the collected works. The flood of the book market with multi-volumes of fiction can be considered a kind of revenge of “big forms”, reaction to the previous stage of book culture, where brochure played the leading role. In the second half of the 1920s, the collected works were most often published in soft-covers. Each volume could be issued as a separate book, strikingly different from the other volumes. This gave the artists a certain freedom of manoeuvre and allowed to break the ingrained stereotypes. There was widely used a spectacular technique: the cover drawing was the same for all volumes, but the colouring of each volume varied. The aim of the article is to expand the established ideas about the book design of the 1920s, to consider and introduce into scientific circulation the forgotten works of known artists. The author carried out the comparative analysis of the multi-volumes issued by the leading publishing houses of those years, using the complex of complementary methods: bibliological, art historical and general historical.Gosizdat was the undisputed leader in the quantitative indicators of publications of the collected works, but its artistic policy in that area was characterized by old-fashioned conservatism tended to minimize the visual elements. The famous publishing house “Academia” in those years published the collected works quite rarely, but enriched the art of book with graphic cycles of such outstanding masters as V.A. Favorsky and N.P. Akimov. The book designers of the publishing house “Zemlya i Fabrika” were particularly successful and consistent in updating the appearance of the collected works: their works had a broad stylistic range and tendency to experiment. Creative search of artists of the 1920s deserves the attention of book historians, designers, illustrators, publishers, because it can give them productive creative ideas.

Abstract:
As an object, the book has a material condition. On the surface, it is a collection of printed leaves held between two covers. The graphics, colours and design are aspects partaking of its aesthetic dimension. However, beyond this materiality, with all its aesthetic qualities, the book has an intrinsic capacity of undergoing changes in its status. Gabriel Liiceanu, a Romanian philosopher, argues that the book is an imploring object. It begs to be opened, read, and thus brought to life. Therefore, the book is an object with a special fate, which necessarily depends on the whims and moods of the Reader who, by merely opening and reading it, changes its ontological status, breathes life onto it and saves it from an improper state of being, as Liiceanu argues. The book’s status as an object is exceptional in this situation. As an object, the book is a treasure trove. The big drama of any book is that of being sentenced to a life in prison between its covers, while its big fortune is to become a spiritual and cultural presence in the mind and soul of the Reader.

The objective of this study are to: (1) find out whether the English textbooks of Mandiri and Solatif for seventh grade have fulfilled the criteria of good textbook, (2) reveal the suitability of the two textbooks with the 2013 Curriculum. This research was conducted using evaluation research. The design was employed to obtain information about the conformity between the basic competences in syllabus of 2013 Curriculum with the materials in the English textbooks and also between the criteria of a good textbook by Cunningsworth with the English textbooks. In this study, two English textbooks; Mandiri and Solatif for seventh grade of junior high school were taken to be analyzed. The results showed that Solatif meets three criteria of a good textbook by Cunningsworth. They are aim and approaches, topics, and methodology. It is partly suitable with four categories: design and organization, language content, skills, and political consideration. However it fails to meet one criterion, which is teacher’s book. Mandiri meets none of the criteria of a good textbook by Cunningsworth. It is partly suitable in seven criteria which are aims and approaches, design and organization, language content, skills, topics, methodology, and political consideration. It fails to meet one criterion; teacher’s book. Based on the data got from the conformity of Solatif with the 2013 Curriculum, it can be summarized that the materials in Solatif covers eight KDs for the seventh grade of junior high school, meaning that it accommodates all what is needed by the students for seventh grade of junior high school. Mandiri. It covers seven KDs for the seventh grade of junior high school. Unfortunately, it does not cover one of the last KD.

Abstract:
The publishing industry shows marked evidence of both gender and racial discrimination. A rational explanation for this difference in treatment of both female and Black authors might relate to the taste-based preferences of book consumers, who might be less willing to pay for books by such authors. We ran a randomized experiment to test for the presence of discriminatory preferences by consumers based on authors’ race, gender and/or age. We collected ratings of 25,201 book surveys across 9,072 subjects on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, making this study the largest experimental study of the book market to date. Subjects were presented with mocked-up book covers and descriptions from each of 14 fiction and non-fiction genres, with one of three possible titles per book randomly assigned. Using author names and photographs, we signaled authors’ race, gender, and age and randomly assigned these combinations to each book presented to our subjects. We then asked subjects to rate their interest in purchasing the book, their evaluation of the author’s credentials, and the amount they were willing to pay for the book. The experimental design of this study strived to eliminate the potential for proxy-based discrimination by providing book descriptions that detailed the authors’ relevant professional experience. The large sample allowed for exploration of various types of taste-based discrimination observed in the literature, including discrimination against particular groups, homophily, and pro-social behavior. Overall, book consumers showed a willingness to pay approximately $0.50 or 3.5% more on average for books by Black authors and little, if any, practically meaningful discrimination based on age or gender. In other words, our study finds no and even contrary evidence of taste-based preferences by consumers that would rationalize the historic discriminatory treatment of Black or of female authors by publishers nor of discrimination based on an author’s age.

“Graphic design” was not a proper term until the beginning of the twentieth century. This led to confusion in credits/authorship for book covers, typography, which was exacerbated by the fact that printers, in addition to being in charge of the production process of books, were also making decisions regarding their finishings. Venezuela presents an interesting chapter in the history of publishing in the world given the hybrid character of publishing in the country in which traditional national artists, illustrators, and publicists comprised a mix of European and North American immigrants. The lack of current bibliographic material inspired me, as a researcher, to make a timeline of the political and graphic history of the country through its colophons. Colophons, which appear at the end of books and thus are often ignored, are nonetheless providers of essential information—witnesses of our progress in authorship and as a society.

The Photographic Book is an important support as an item that covers the photographic creation of a project in different ways (FERNÁNDEZ, 2011). The justification and problem of this work is to show that Photography, here, is not just a piece of data to be analyzed. It is part of the results obtained throughout the development of a project. To address this topic, the article deals with the making of photograpic books when developed based on the Ethnographic Method and the possible links between Design Methodology and Visual Anthropology. To this end, the objective here is to analyze the production of digital books from the Feast of Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Blacks Collection (Coleção Festejo Maior), which portrays six different Guardas de Congado – Brotherhoods of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Blacks – from the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte – MG - Brazil. The books were developed from research and extension projects in 2015 at the School of Design – Escola de Design (ED) / Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais (UEMG) – and were presented at P&D Design – Brazilian Congress of Research and Development in Design. The methodology used was qualitative (GIL, 2017), focusing on Ethnography and Visual Anthropology (COLLIER JR., 1973; SAMAIN, 2012) and the development of Design products (BONSIEPE, 2012). In this way, it can be observed that photography books or photobooks are a support that allows the development of a photographic project based on consistent methodologies, which allows us to conclude that the use of photography goes beyond field research data, becoming a protagonist in projects research and extension.

Abstract:
The Influence of Illustrated Art in Increasing Interest in Reading (Study of Novel Design by Tere Liye)‎ ABSTRACT Books are a window of knowledge, but the low interest in reading in Indonesia is still a problem. If left unchecked, interest in seeking knowledge in the younger generation can be lost. This study was conducted to determine the effect of illustration art in increasing interest in reading books. The research method is descriptive-qualitative, using a literature study and survey approach. The research sample was 100 respondents with an age range of 15-24 years, 78% and ages 25-30 years, 22%. The results showed that illustrations on book covers have an important role in increasing reading interest. About 75% of respondents stated that they prefer book covers with attractive illustrations, soft colours, typography that matches the illustrations, and a simple impression when looking at them. book. Therefore, a strategic step to attract the younger generation's reading interest is to include valid scientific or historical knowledge in books favoured by the younger generation, one of which is novels. Researchers believe that "reading books" creates an addictive effect or an interest in continuing to know other information. If you already like the habit of reading, slowly, people will continue seeking new knowledge.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this report is to explain the process of how Booth Library developed an online WordPress blog to market physical and electronic resources in the library’s collection. This report looks at specific tools that are used to maintain the blog and sample topics that the blog covers. Design/methodology/approach WordPress software was installed on library servers, making the blog a cohesive part of the library’s website. A PHP script called “List It!” was developed to produce book lists with cover images from a list of scanned library barcodes. After the book lists are inserted into blog posts, social media tools such as YOURLS and Hootsuite are used to schedule tweets and Facebook posts. Findings Since its launch in September 2014, Ref News has received a total of 6,180 views and 3,835 unique views for 88 posts. On average, users are spending two minutes and 44 seconds on a page or group of pages. Less measurable benefits include greatly expanded website content, booklists that can be reused and repurposed and a sense of ownership and increased morale for those who help curate book displays and write blog posts. Originality/value This report shows how a free WordPress blog can be used as a versatile and collaborative tool to market library resources and connect with users.

Abstract:
Purpose In the era of high student fees and intense market competition, many universities now buy books for their new students, and recently have incorporated student choice into the offer, enabling students to choose how to spend funds. Teesside University has successfully piloted such an approach with one academic School, the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Law. The pilot has now been extended to all academic Schools, with all students receiving £100 per academic year to spend on reading list books. The scheme covers new full-time undergraduate students at the University, and is operated in collaboration with an external company, John Smiths. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the Teesside University Advance scheme against baseline data of book borrowing and reservation patterns of reading list titles. The paper explores the impact upon the student experience and student perceptions of the Library. Design/methodology/approach The project used a mixed methods approach. The quantitative strand analysed book borrowing and reservation patterns data from library systems and from book purchasing patterns data provided by the online store supporting the scheme. Students were also surveyed about the scheme. The qualitative strand, via one-to-one interviews conducted by the student researcher, gained an insight into why students select certain titles to purchase; and what their expectations of the university library are for the supply of reading list titles. Findings Analysis revealed an overall decline in book borrowing from the library of the titles selected for purchase by students via the scheme. Student perceptions of the library were positive and demonstrated a strategic use of library resources alongside book purchases and open web resources. At early stages of university undergraduate study, students need guidance on most appropriate resources to use and why, from either reading lists or book bundles. Originality/value Teesside University scheme is unique in the UK in covering all new full-time undergraduates and letting them choose which reading list titles to buy with the university funds provided.

Abstract:
The article provides a short review of the just published book by Professor Vl. V. Sapozhnikov entitled «Synthesis of Systems of Train Traffic Control at Railway Stations Eliminating Dangerous Failures». The book covers the basics of the synthesis of safety train traffic control systems at railway stations. Control systems at the stage of abstract synthesis are represented in the form of a set of multitudes of finite state machines, the implementation of which excludes the conditions for occurrence of dangerous failures and, accordingly, for occurrence of catastrophic disruptions in work, causing threats to passengers and transported goods. The book is recommended to developers of systems of control of responsible technological processes, computer-aided design systems, testing, technical diagnostics and monitoring of automation devices in transport and industry, as well as to the students, Ph.D. students, academia, specialists in the field of synthesis of control systems.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the implications that Power’s book had to the author’s research in public sector auditing. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the author reflects and debates the inspiration that Michael Power’s book The Audit Society had on the author’s own research. Findings The author finds that this book had a significant influence on how he succeeded theorizing his studies on auditing, and how he could contribute to the audit literature. It is stunning how the book succeeded in synthesizing audit research, encouraging scholars to understand auditing as a social practice, i.e. how auditing can be theorized using various social science theories and how the book also appealed to broader social science. Research limitations/implications This paper is a reflection that covers around a 20-year period with potential mis-representations of how exactly sequences of actions and thoughts were. Practical implications This paper helps to clarify how it is that audit operates and influences everyday life of persons involved with auditing. Social implications This paper casts doubts as to what actions are carried out in the name of audit and that audit is not just a value free activity but involved with political agendas. Originality/value The originality of this paper is that it fleshes out how a seminal book can have significant implications on how research is carried out.
