Appareil de table conçu en premier lieu pour l’étudiant, mais utile aussi à l’enseignant, la calculatrice auto-correctrice Classmate 88 est préparée pour exécuter trois fonctions. En plus de calculer à l’aide des quatre opérations de base comme toute bonne calculatrice, la Classmate 88 peut fournir, sur commande et ce par choix au hasard, des problèmes et les corriger un à un, ou fournir une série de problèmes avec ou sans réponse, au gré de son utilisateur. Au cours de l’année académique 1976-77 une étude exploratoire a été menée dans quatre classes du second cycle du primaire de la Commission Scolaire de Sainte-Foy, en vue de déterminer les utilités de cet appareil dans la classe même. Puis une expérience a été réalisée en 1977-78, dans huit classes du second cycle du primaire de la Commission Scolaire de Sainte-Foy. Le but de cette expérience était d’évaluer les gains d’apprentissage des utilisateurs de la Classmate 88 dans les domaines suivants de techniques opératoires : addition, soustraction, multiplication, division, fractions et décimaux. Il sera fait rapport dans cet article, des résultats de ces deux expériences.

Abstract:
La rupture d’un contrat peut survenir pour cause d’inexécution des obligations contractuelles. Il s’agit alors d’une rupture-sanction qui a pour but de mettre un terme à la relation contractuelle. Ce droit de rompre, comme tout autre, n’est pas sans limite et doit être exercé selon les exigences de la bonne foi. Le présent texte jette un regard sur certaines facettes du rôle de la bonne foi dans un contexte de rupture du contrat. Il convient premièrement de s’interroger sur la possibilité d’invoquer un manquement à l’obligation de bonne foi pour fonder le droit à la résolution de contrat. Malgré l’origine légale de l’obligation de bonne foi, celle-ci fait partie du cadre contractuel. L’auteur conclut qu’un manquement aux exigences de la bonne foi lors de l’exécution du contrat constitue une faute contractuelle qui donne ouverture à la résolution du contrat. Deuxièmement, l’examen des conditions de fond du droit à la résolution amène l’auteur à souligner que l’obligation de bonne foi pourrait permettre d’offrir une solution au problème de l’inexécution anticipée. Finalement, l’examen de la mise en œuvre du droit de rompre permet de constater qu’au stade de la demeure, la bonne foi exige que la dernière chance qu’a le débiteur pour s’exécuter ne soit pas illusoire et que de façon générale, le principe de la bonne foi sert à contrôler le comportement du créancier et du débiteur dans l’exercice de la résolution ou de la résiliation du contrat.

L’article porte sur la notion de « bonne foi » dans les politiques françaises de prévention des expulsions locatives. Dans l’évaluation des commissions attribuant des aides aux locataires en difficulté, nous distinguons trois figures de l’individu défaillant comme « coupable-responsable », « victime » ou « incapable ». Pour les situations indécises, l’invocation de la bonne foi permet de départager les demandeurs entre coupables-responsables et victimes. Les critères de la bonne foi sont flous et ces jugements restent incertains. Parmi les critères avancés, l’impossibilité de contacter les locataires ou la récidive renseignent sur les attentes de ces politiques sociales envers leurs bénéficiaires.

Le législateur codifie à l'article 1375 du Code civil du Québec (C.c.Q.) la théorie élaborée sous l'empire du Code civil du Bas Canada quant à l'existence de l'obligation de bonne foi en matière contractuelle. Cette règle doit désormais gouverner la conduite des parties à tout moment de la vie d'un contrat. Il s'agit en fait de la codification de la bonne volonté morale liée à l'équité. Cependant, la bonne foi est une source d'incertitude quant à son application, à ses effets et aux obligations qui en découlent. La jurisprudence et la doctrine reconnaissent l'obligation de renseigner et l'obligation de se renseigner comme des obligations corollaires de l'obligation de bonne foi. Existe-t-il d'autres obligations implicites découlant de cette obligation générale de bonne foi ? Quels critères les tribunaux doivent-ils appliquer pour évaluer la conduite du contractant à qui l'on reproche un manquement à cette obligation ? Un tel manquement peut-il excuser le comportement imprudent et peu diligent de l'autre partie ? Ce manquement lors de la formation du contrat peut-il être sanctionné par la nullité du contrat ? Cette dernière peut-elle se justifier par l'application de l'article 1375 C.c.Q. seul, et devient-il alors possible d'affirmer que cet article est générateur d'une sanction autonome ? D'autres questions surgissent quant à l'application de cette règle lors de l'exécution ou de l'extinction d'une obligation contractuelle. Par une analyse pragmatique d'un grand nombre de domaines et de circonstances au cours desquelles la bonne foi de l'une des parties peut être mise en question, l'auteur essaye de répondre à ces différentes interrogations.

En common law canadienne, la bonne foi dans les obligations contractuelles se limite à des domaines précis ; il n’y a pas d’obligation générale. Dans Bhasin c. Hrynew, la Cour suprême du Canada à cherché à pallier cette insuffisance en posant un principe directeur général de bonne foi et une obligation d’agir honnêtement dans l’exécution de ses obligations contractuelles. Elle laissait aux cours inférieures la tâche de déterminer les modalités de mise en application du nouveau principe. La Cour a utilisé la méthodologie de la common law pour sortir des limites analytiques restreintes de la common law et élargir la portée de la bonne foi. Or ce précédent n’a pas eu l’effet escompté. La définition limitée de la bonne foi donnée par la Cour suprême du Canada a conduit les cours inférieures à réduire Bhasin c. Hrynew à un cas d’espèce. Devant l’indétermination du principe et de sa portée, les cours d’appel ont utilisé une gamme de techniques pour le distinguer, entre autres, un recours aux règles de la common law pour limiter son champ d’application au lieu d’un recours à la nouvelle décision pour modifier les règles de la common law. Le Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) et le Code civil du Québec (CCQ), auxquels la Cour s’était référée pour justifier l’introduction du principe directeur général en common law fournissait une feuille de route pour son élaboration que les juridictions inférieures ont refusé de suivre.

Esta entrevista foi realizada no dia 12 de setembro de 2021, no contexto de uma série de atividades acadêmicas desenvolvidas em resposta às consequências da epidemia de covid-19, por iniciativa da professora Andréa Maris Campos Guerra, coordenadora do laboratório Psilacs (Psicanálise e Laço Social na Contemporaneidade), da UFMG (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais). Antes da pandemia, o laboratório desenvolvia trabalhos sobre os comportamentos de risco entre adolescentes que, em determinado momento, foram objeto de instituições do sistema penal voltadas para jovens do Município de Belo Horizonte. A convite de Andréa Guerra, François Sauvagnat,então professor da Universidade de Rennes 2, vinha colaborando com o desenvolvimento de pesquisas e outras atividades acadêmicas sobre temas envolvendo psicanálise e criminologia. Nessa ocasião, por sugestão de Sauvagnat, examinávamos o comportamento de risco entre os jovens de nossas pesquisas, apoiados pela leitura lacaniana da aposta de Pascal.

Dans ce cadre, il s’agira surtout de mettre au jour les rapports qui se dessinent, à l’intérieur du corpus malebranchiste, entre une série de couples conceptuels : logique et morale, sensation et sentiment intérieur, conscience psychologique et conscience morale, péché et erreur, reproches de la raison et remords. Des éléments de réponse seront ainsi apportés aux interrogations de fond qui persistent sur la nature et l’orientation de la philosophie morale de l’oratorien.

En s’interrogeant sur une sentence de Quintus Mucius rapportée par Cicéron(Off. 3.70), cette étude entend montrer qu’au-delà de leur diversité et des évolutions qu’elles ont subies, les actions de bonne foi (iudicia bonae fidei)ont été depuis l’époque républicaine invariablement considérées par la jurisprudence romaine comme des actions fondées sur le ius civile, et non sur le pouvoir de juridiction du préteur, malgré le défaut de prévision législative qui les caractérise ; qu’elles furent initialement, pour l’essentiel d’entre elles,secrétées par le droit propre des citoyens romains, dans le cadre de rapports marqués par une certaine intimité de vie (societas vitae), et non du fait d’exigences liées au commerce avec les pérégrins. Corrélativement, la mention de la bonne foi dans leur formule (clause ex fide bona), loin de représenter le fondement d’un devoir moral ou de l’obligation juridique qu’elles protègent,représente un standard de jugement destiné à amplifier les pouvoirs du juge pour la résolution de ces contentieux rendus délicats par les liens d’affinité sociale fréquents entre les parties au litige. De la vient l’étonnante modernité procédurale de ces formules rédigées de manière diplomatique et euphémique. Ainsi l’opposition romaine entre « droit strict » et bonne foi concerne non pas le fondement de l’action, mais les particularités de l’instance et les pouvoirs du juge
Actions of good faith (iudicia bonae fidei) have for long been suspected of being initially praetorian actions, which were probably for most of them created by the peregrine praetorship to enforce contracts passed by the strangers (peregrine), so that their material source is good faith (fides bona),expressed in their formula by the clause “ex fide bona”. Our research is an attempt to prove that :a) these actions were already considered as civilian actions in the later Republic, despite the lack of a statutory ground b)their initial scope was to protect typically Roman relationships; c)Thus, the clausulaex fide bona was a simple standard that enlarged the power of the judge and overlapped some of the strict rules of Roman civil procedure, as well as it took place in an euphemistic and diplomatic way of writing formulas, in order to respect the social affinity (societas vitae) between the parties

L'objet de cette thèse consiste en la définition de la bonne foi qui tant en droit allemand qu'en droit français semble correspondre à une bonne foi objective, Treu und Glauben et une subjective, guter Glaube. Il s'est agi de démontrer que les définitions doctrinales s'appuyaient sur un critère d'appréciation erronée. Il n' y aurait plus une bonne foi nécessairement objective ou purement subjective. La seconde étape de la définition a consisté à analyser toutes les manifestations légales et jurisprudentielles de la bonne foi en droit allemand et français. L'angle retenu a été celui d'une protection de la confiance dans un pouvoir puis dans un droit. Ont été analysées les prises en compte de l'apparence en matière de mandat et représentation ou en matière de propriété apparente. La dernière confrontation a concerné le droit des biens. La bonne foi dont il y est fait usage se résume par la confiance dans son propre droit de propriété ou confiance dans le droit de propriété de son auteur
The subject-matter of this doctoral thesis is the definition of the good faith which, both in German and French law, seems to cover an objective concept of good faith, Treu und Glauben, and a subjective concept, guter Glaube. The first step was to show that the definitions in legal writing were based on a wrong criterion. There would not be a necessarily objective or purely subjective concept of good faith. The second stage in defining good faith consisted in analysing all instances of good faith in German and French statutory and case law, the focus being on the protection of confidence put in representation or in a right. Thus were discussed agency by estoppel and apparent authority. The last step was to examine property law, i. E. The role of good faith in the confidence put in someone's own right or in someone else's ownership right

De nature légale ou quasi légale, la présomption de bonne foi, issue de l'article 2268 du Code civil, a pour fonction d'attribuer le risque de la preuve à une partie. Le rôle et l'utilité de ce mécanisme probatoire diffèrent dans le litige où un revendiquant Conteste la relation protégée d'un possesseur avec une chose et dans le litige qui fait suite à une relation antérieure entre deux sujets de droit. Une seconde différence concerne les éléments de fait pris en compte. Dans le premier cas, seule la bonne foi du possesseur est appréciée. Dans le second cas, le rôle du juge et la notion de bonne foi (a contrario la mauvaise foi, le dol, l'abus ou l'absence de bonne foi) ont des conséquences probatoires importantes. La preuve de l'état d'esprit d'une partie se répercute sur l'appréciation de l'état d'esprit de l'autre partie. Il ne s'agit pas seulement de voir si une partie doit être sanctionnée, mais également de voir si l'adversaire mérite de profiter de la sanction demandée
The presumption of good faith, under article 2268 of the Civil Code, is a simple presumption of a legal or quasi-legal nature. The function and usefulness of this probatory mechanism vary between the case of a lawsuit where a claimant challenges the protected owner-object relationship, and the case of a litigation pertaining to a pre-existing relationship between two legal entities. A second difference pertains ta factual elements that are taken into consideration. Ln the first case, only the good faith of the owner is evaluated. Ln the second case, the role of the judge and the concept of good faith (and conversely bad faith, cheat, the breach or lack of good faith) have specific probatory consequences. The evidence for the state of mind of one party interacts with the evaluation of the state of mind of the other party. Not only must it be determined whether a party must be penalized, but whether the other side deserves to benefit from the requested penalty

A l’aube de ce nouveau millénaire, le contrat subit de profonds changements. Il est même légitime de parler de dérèglement contractuel, à l’image du dérèglement climatique. S’agit-il d’un dérèglement contractuel ou d’une nouvelle crise du contrat ? Quoi qu’il en soit, le contrat s’est considérablement métamorphosé. Il a subi de profondes mutations. Ceci entraine un abandon de ses repères classiques et une refondation de ses paradigmes. Désormais, le contrat n’est plus sous l’emprise d’une seule idéologie. Il est en proie à des idéologies différentes. Le principe de « l’autonomie de la volonté » qui était la seule idéologie sur laquelle reposait le contrat s’éclipse progressivement face à la concurrence effrénée de la théorie de « l’utile et du juste ». D’autres philosophies, comme le solidarisme contractuel et le volontarisme social, exercent aussi leur influence sur le contrat. Le culte de l’égalité, issu de l’universalisme des Lumières, cède sa place à une approche postmoderne du contrat. Dans ce tumulte idéologique, le principe de « bonne foi » apparait comme une médiation entre le passé et le présent. Car en dépit de son apparence de classicisme, il reflète une réalité tout à fait moderne. Il permet de concilier des idéologies différentes. Par son caractère protéiforme, il permet aussi de saisir des réalités différentes. Il favorise la liberté contractuelle tout en préservant la sécurité contractuelle. En suggérant le recours à l’obligation d’information et de coopération, le principe de bonne foi contribue concrètement à la liberté contractuelle. Parallèlement, il postule l’adaptation du contrat déséquilibré. Ce qui permet de favoriser la sécurité contractuelle. Car la correction permet au contrat de se pérenniser. En obligeant chaque partie à informer son partenaire et à réadapter le contrat déséquilibré, le principe de bonne foi apporte une contribution majeure à la justice contractuelle. Désormais, la faiblesse n’est plus une fatalité. Et le déséquilibre n’est pas non plus une situation insurmontable, mais un défi à relever
At the dawn of this new millennium, the contract such undergoes profound changes, so that it is even legitimate to speak of contractual deregulation, alike the climate change. Is it then all about a deregulation or a new crisis of the contract? Whatever it is, contract has, by profound changes, considerably metamorphosed. That leads to an abandonment of its traditional landmarks, and to rebuilding its paradigms. Therefore, the contract is no longer only influenced by a single ideology, but by many. Thus, the « autonomy of will » principle that was the only ideology the contract relies thereupon, gradually eclipses due to the fierce competition of the theory of « useful and fair ». Other philosophies, such as contractual solidarism and social voluntarism also influence it. The cult of equality, derived from the universalism of the Enlightenment, gives way to a postmodern approach of the contract. In this ideological tumult, the principle of « good faith » arises as a mediation between the past and the present. For, despite its classical appearance, it embodies a reality quite modern. It allows to combine different ideologies. Its protean nature also allows to deal with different realities. While fostering freedom of contract, it also preserves contractual certainty. By suggesting resort to obligation of information and cooperation, the principle of good faith actually contributes to contractual freedom. In parallel, it implies an adjustment of the unbalanced contract, thereby ensuring contractual certainty. Adjustment then allows contract to ever last. By setting a mutual obligation of information among parties who have to readjust the unbalanced contract, the principle of good faith thenceforth highly contributes to contractual justice. Neither impairment is no longer a fatality, nor the imbalance an impossible obstacle. Here only lies a challenge to overcome

La présomption de bonne foi a une valeur légale, puisqu’elle est consacrée par le législateur dans l’article 2274 du code civil. Cette thèse est consacrée à l’étude de la bonne foi-croyance erronée pour cerner son contenu et préciser son régime juridique, étant donné que cette notion est toujours accusée d’être floue et vague. La croyance erronée résulte des éléments objectifs matériels significatifs de vérité et invasifs de l’état d’esprit de sa victime. Le critère de la prise en considération et de la protection de cette dernière est la légitimité de la croyance erronée qui qualifie la bonne foi. Lorsque la croyance erronée est légitime, la présomption de bonne foi est consolidée et peut, par conséquent, déployer tous ses effets juridiques. La bonne foi qualifiée jouit, ainsi, d’un pouvoir protecteur et créateur de droits subjectifs qui porte atteinte à la puissance et à l’effectivité de la loi et de certains principes juridiques. La bonne foi a également une fonction fondatrice de certaines règles légales. Cependant, la puissance normative de la présomption de bonne foi consolidée n’est pas absolue ; elle est limitée par la préséance de certaines règles légales qui ne peuvent céder à la fonction créatrice et protectrice de la bonne foi qui est, ainsi, sacrifiée au profit de certains intérêts supérieurs
The presumption of good faith has a legal value, because it is consecrated by the legislature in the section 2274 of the civil code. This thesis concerns only good faith-erroneous belief and tries to precise its content and juridical rule, as this notion is always accused to be blurred and vague. Erroneous belief is the result of objective material elements which are significant of trust and invasive of the state of mind of the victim. The erroneous belief needs a degree of legitimity in order to qualify the good faith and give rise to juridical protection. Where the erroneous belief is lawful, the presumption of good faith is consolidated and can spread all its juridical effects. The good faith has, therefore, a power of creation of rights. This power involves a breach of the law and of certain principles of the civil law. The good faith is also the basis of somme legal rules. However, the normative power of the good faith is not absolute ; it’s limited by the hold of some legal rules which sacrify the good faith in order to protect superior interests

Le sujet traite porte sur l'apparence en droit des sociétés commerciales - études de droit compare français et tunisien. Il vise, en premier lieu, a identifier l'apparence en droit des sociétés a partir de ses différentes applications telles la représentation apparente ou la constitution apparente des sociétés. Cette identification s'effectuera au regard de la reconnaissance de l'apparence par le juge (l'apparence d'origine jurisprudentielle) et par le législateur (l'apparence d'origine légale). L'identification de l'apparence portera sur les conditions juridiques de sa reconnaissance et les éléments matériels qui la constituent. La finalité de l'apparence est de protéger le tiers qui lui est reste étranger. Il est donc essentiel de s'interroger sur le domaine de cette protection et son fondement juridique. Cela permettra de déterminer le lien juridique qui unit le tiers a la personne tenue par l'apparence. La question traitée porte, en second lieu, sur la qualification de l'apparence en droit des sociétés. Cette qualification suppose que soit étudiée l'application du régime de la situation de droit a la situation apparente. Le rattachement de cette dernière au régime de la situation de droit dépend exclusivement des caractères vraisemblable et excusable de l'apparence. Ces deux caractères conduisent à reconnaître en l'apparence une technique générale de rattachement. D’où l’intérêt a distinguer l'apparence d'autres techniques de rattachement similaires telles la règle de conflit des lois ou la notion de fraude. La qualification de l'apparence en droit des sociétés conduit enfin a la spécifier par rapport à la théorie générale de l'apparence.

La persévérance constitue une expression nouvelle en droit des contrats. L'objet de cette étude est de rendre compte de sa réalité dans cette matière tantôt sous les traits d’une obligation juridique tantôt à l’état de simple comportement. Le premier axe de réflexion consiste à démontrer l'existence de l'obligation de persévérance en recherchant dans le droit positif ses moindres manifestations tant lors de la période précédant la formation du contrat qu’au stade de son exécution. La réalité de l'obligation de persévérance atteste d'une profonde évolution des principes et impératifs traditionnels de la théorie générale du contrat et apparaît comme un instrument de mise en œuvre de ses nouvelles aspirations telles que le principe d'équilibre contractuel ou l'impératif de pérennité contractuelle. Le second axe de réflexion invite à envisager la persévérance à l'état de comportement en recherchant s'il existe dans notre législation ou jurisprudence des faveurs reconnues à la persévérance et en démontrant tout l'intérêt de récompenser utilement la persévérance du contractant tant sur le plan de la moralité contractuelle que sur celui de l’efficacité du contrat.

Knowledge of mechanical properties of bones is important for the designing of bone replacements and implants as well as the research of bone diseases such as osteoporosis. However, bone, especially trabecular bone, is a highly anisotropic and heterogeneous living tissue. Micro-computed-tomography (micro-CT) and three-dimensional ultrasound imaging techniques are valuable tools for nondestructive investigation of three-dimensional trabecular bone architecture. From a reconstruction of trabecular bone, a numerical model such as finite element (FE) model can be generated. Using this FE model to simulate compression test, and comparing the simulation results to the results from real mechanical test of the same specimen, the relationship between the observed mechanical behaviors and the microstructure can be established.

Abstract:
Diaphyseal bone defect represents a significant problem for orthopaedic surgeons and patients. In order to improve and fasten bone regenerating process we implanted HA biodegradable magnetized scaffolds in a large animal model critical bone defect. A critical long bone defect was created in 6 sheep metatarsus diaphysis; then we implanted a novel porous ceramic composite scaffold (20.0 mm in length; 6.00 mm inner diameter and 17.00 mm outer diameter), made of Hydroxyapatite that incorporates magnetite (HA/Mgn 90/10), proximally fixated by two small cylindrical permanent parylene coated NdFeB magnets (one 6.00 mm diameter magnetic rod firmly incorporated into the scaffold and one 8.00 mm diameter magnetic rods fitted into proximal medullary canal, both 10.00 mm long); to give stability to the complex bone-scaffold-bone, screws and plate was used as a bridge. Scaffolds biocompatibility was previously assessed in vitro using human osteoblast-like cells. Magnetic forces through scaffold were calculated by finite element software (COMSOL Multiphysics, AC/DC Model). One week after surgery, magnetic nanoparticles functionalized with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were injected at the mid portion of the scaffold using a cutaneous marker positioned during surgery as reference point. After sixteen weeks, sheep were sacrificed to analyze metatarsi. Macroscopical, radiological and microCT examinations were performed. Macroscopical examination shows bone tissue formation inside scaffold pores and with complete coverage of scaffolds, in particular at magnetized bone-scaffold interface. X-rays show a good integration of the scaffold with a good healing process of critical bone defect, and without scaffolds mobilization. These datas were confirmed by the microCT that shown new formation of bone inside the scaffolds, in particular at magnetized bone-scaffold interface. These preliminary results lead our research to exploiting magnetic forces to stimulate bone formation, as attested in both in vitro and in vivo models and to improve fixation at bone scaffold interface, as calculated by finite element software, and moreover to guide targeted drug delivery without functionalized magnetic nanoparticles dissemination in all body. Histological analysis will be performed to confirm and quantify bone tissue regeneration at both interfaces.

Bone is an important multifunctional biological tissue with remarkable mechanical properties: high strength and stiffness, high fracture toughness, and light weight. These superior properties are due, in part, to the hierarchical structure of bone ranging from molecular to macroscopic levels, Fig. 1. Nevertheless, it is not clearly understood how the microstructure and mechanical properties of various hierarchies at different length scales affect the overall behavior of bone. Such understanding is essential in orthopedics for designing implant materials and fabricating synthetic bone substitutes and also for assessing the effect of bone diseases and their medications on bone’s properties. It can, moreover, serve as a guide in design of advanced synthetic bio-inspired materials for a wide range of engineering applications.

Review question / Objective: - Does the osseodensification drilling technique increase primary stability in low-density bone? - The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate primary stability in dental implants in people with low density bone using the osseodensification technique. Condition being studied: The replacement of missing teeth through dental implants is currently the most practiced in dental clinics. The main criterion for determining the success of an implant is osseointegration, which is a direct structural and functional connection between vital bone and the prosthetic load-bearing surface of an implant. In the same way, primary stability must be obtained for a good lasting clinical result of the implant and to achieve this purpose, the bone density must be evaluated where the dental implant is to be placed. Salah Huwais in 2013 introduced a new osteotomy procedure (Oseodensification) for site preparation without removal and bone preservation. The Osseodensification process produces an autograft layer around the implant with the osteotomy surface, the autologous bone comes into contact through an endosteal device that accelerates osseointegration due to the nucleation of osteoblasts in the instrumented bone adjacent to the implant and has a greater primary stability due to contact between the device and the bone.

Review question / Objective: Does the bioactive surface of titanium dental implants, based on biomolecules, influence osseointegration?. The aim of our study was to evaluate the role and efficacy of bioactive surfaces in osseointegration. Our review study limited the research interest to titanium dental implants coated with a biomolecule, i.e., an organic molecule produced by a living organism. Condition being studied: In recent years, much attention has been paid to topographical modifications of dental implant surfaces, as well as to their coating with biologically active substances.a bioactive surface is one capable of achieving faster and higher quality osseointegration, shortening waiting times and solving situations of poor bone quality. Molecules that can be applied for bioactive purposes include bioceramics, ions and biomolecules. Collagen and bone morphogenetic protein have been suggested as bone stimulating agents. Biofunctionalization of the implant surface with a biomimetic active peptide has also been shown to result in a significant increase in bone-to-implant ratios and an increase in peri-implant bone density.

The Cumberland Bone Cave is a public visitation stop along the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail renowned for its unique fossil resources that help reconstruct Appalachian middle Pleistocene life in the mid-Atlantic region of North America. This site is gated for safety and to prevent unwanted exploration and damage. Approximately 163 taxa of fossil plant and animals have been collected from Cumberland Bone Cave since 1912. Most of the fossils that have been published pertain to mammals, including many extinct or locally extirpated genera and species. Though the early excavations made by the Smithsonian Institution between 1912 and 1915 are the best known of the work at Cumberland Bone Cave, over many decades multiple institutions and paleontologists have collected and studied the fossil resources from this site up until 2012. Today, fossils from Cumberland Bone Cave are housed at various museum collections, including public displays at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. and the Allegany Museum in Cumberland, Maryland. This report summarizes the geology, fossil resources, and the history of excavation and research for Potomac Heritage Trail’s Cumberland Bone Cave.
