Abstract:
SUMMARYIn 1988, there were two outbreaks of legionellosis in Bolton Health District. Altogether 37 cases of Legionnaires' disease and 23 cases of non-pneumonic legionellosis were identified. Twenty-five patients with Legionnaires' disease were associated with an engineering plant, 4 with Bolton town centre, and 8 with both the plant and town centre. Twenty-two people with non-pneumonic legionellosis were linked with the engineering plant and one with the plant and the town centre. A case-control study carried out among 37 employees with legionellosis and 109 control subjects at the plant showed that infection was associated with one of the 15 cooling towers on the site. Legionella pneumophila indistinguishable by serological and genetic typing methods was isolated from this cooling tower and from sputum samples from two patients. In the town centre, no one tower was linked with infection and L. pneumophila was not cultured from any of the nine towers identified. Control measures were implemented and to date there have been no further cases of legionellosis associated with Bolton Health District.

Abstract:
As the general population ages, so too does the nursing workforce. A recent Queen's Nursing Institute (QNI) report (2019a) stated that 1 in 10 qualified district nurse positions have been lost in the past 10 years—without a trained workforce to replace those who retire. Workforce planning is central to ensure safe and effective care in the community setting. This article aims to provide a narrative account of one student who started her career at the University of Bolton as a trainee assistant practitioner and over time achieved her present position as a district nurse team manager. The account will include her journey from support worker to assistant practitioner, studying at the University of Bolton as a trainee assistant practitioner on a ‘work, earn and learn’ programme. It details the support she received from mentors in the trust, alongside her onward journey to registered nurse and specialist nurse practitioner qualifications.

Abstract:
The article describes the results of studying mycobiota in Olkhovsky district located in the Central part of Volgograd region. The standard protocol included methods of collecting, photographing in natural and laboratory conditions. To identify the material Mikmed-5 binocular microscope, Levenhuk C510 NG camera and a standard set of reagents (alkali solution, Melzer reagent) were used in the laboratory of Experimental biology of Volgograd State University. The works of Russian and foreign mycologists such as M.A. Bondartsev, V.M. Kotkov, L.G. Perevedentseva, T. Niemelä, L. Ryvarden became a base for determining fungi. The specimens were cut in half before drying and dried at a temperature of 38° C. Dried samples placed in paper envelopes are stored in the Mycological herbarium of Volgograd State University. Freezing of aphyllophoroid fungi for a month was a necessary procedure before placing it in a mycological herbarium. As a result of preliminary studies from September to November 2019, we identify nine species of basidiomycetes such as Bovistella utriformis (Bull.) Demoulin et Rebriev, Fomes fomentarius (L.) Fr., Lepista personata (Fr.) Cooke, Marasmius oreades (Bolton) Fr., Phellinus igniarius (L.) Quél., Pholiota populnea (Pers.) Kuyper et Tjall.- Beuk., Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacq.) P. Kumm., Saproamanita vittadinii (Moretti) Redhead, Vizzini, Drehmel et Contu, and Schizophyllum commune Fr. The article presents an annotated list of fungi with the indication of data on the location, substrate, frequency of occurrence and the name of the collector, if the collection was not carried out by the authors, for each type. Species names were accepted according to CABI “Index Fungorum” international electronic database (www.indexfungorum.org) as of December 2019. The trophic analysis of the composition of macromycetes shows that the largest number of species was found on dead branches and trunks, as well as live weakened trees of Fraxinus lanceolata Borkh., Populus nigra L., Salix alba L. This study of mycobiota in Olkhovsky district will be continued.

Abstract:
Raw meats are sometimes contaminated with Campylobacter species from animal faeces, and meats have repeatedly been implicated in foodborne infections. This study evaluated the prevalence, virulence genes, antimicrobial susceptibility patterns, and resistance gene determinants in Campylobacter species isolated from retailed meat carcasses. A total of 248 raw meat samples were collected from butcheries, supermarkets, and open markets; processed for enrichment in Bolton broth; and incubated at 42 °C for 48 h in 10% CO2. Thereafter, the broths were streaked on modified charcoal cefoperazone deoxycholate agar (mCCDA) plates and incubated at the same conditions and for the same amount of time. After incubation, colonies were isolated and confirmed by Polymerase chain reaction using specific oligonucleotide sequences used for the identification of the genus Campylobacter, species, and their virulence markers. The patterns of antimicrobial resistance profiles of the identified isolates were studied by disk diffusion method against 12 antibiotics, and relevant resistance genes were assessed by PCR. From culture, 845 presumptive Campylobacter isolates were obtained, of which 240 (28.4%) were identified as genus Campylobacter. These were then characterised into four species, of which C. coli had the highest prevalence rate (22.08%), followed by C. jejuni (16.66%) and C. fetus (3.73%). The virulence genes detected included iam (43.14%), cadF (37.25%), cdtB (23.53%), flgR (18.63%), and flaA (1.96%), and some of the isolates co-harboured two to four virulence genes. Of the 12 antibiotics tested, the highest phenotypic resistance displayed by Campylobacter isolates was against clindamycin (100%), and the lowest level of resistance was observed against imipenem (23.33%). The frequency of resistance genes detected included catll (91.78%), tetA (68.82%), gyra (61.76%), ampC (55%), aac(3)-IIa (aacC2)a (40.98%), tetM (38.71%), ermB (18.29%), tetB (12.90%), and tetK (2.15%). There is a high incidence of Campylobacter species in meat carcasses, suggesting these to be a reservoir of campylobacteriosis agents in this community, and as such, consumption of undercooked meats in this community is a potential health risk to consumers.

Abstract:
The following is an account of glottalization and gemination in the traditional vernacular of the Greater Bolton area. Bolton is a town situated 12 miles north-west of Manchester in northwestern England. The Greater Bolton area consists of the county borough of Bolton, Farnworth municipal borough, and the urban districts of Horwich, Turton, Little Lever and Kearsley. Its population is approximately 230,000.From a consideration of various historical, industrial, economic, social and administrative factors, the Greater Bolton area can be shown to be a relatively homogeneous cultural unit within the urban field of influence of Bolton. This cultural homogeneity is reflected in the speech of the area, which is also relatively homogeneous in character, and distinctive when compared to the speech of other parts of Greater Manchester County, South Lancashire and Merseyside (cf. Shorrocks 1980:1–27).

Abstract:
Campylobacter species are among the major bacteria implicated in human gastrointestinal infections and are majorly found in faeces of domestic animals, sewage discharges and agricultural runoff. These pathogens have been implicated in diseases outbreaks through consumption of contaminated milk and water in some parts of the globe and reports on this is very scanty in the Eastern Cape Province. Hence, this study evaluated the occurrence as well as virulence and antimicrobial-associated makers of Campylobacter species recovered from milk and water samples. A total of 56 water samples and 72 raw milk samples were collected and the samples were processed for enrichment in Bolton broth and incubated for 48 h in 10% CO2 at 42 °C under microaerobic condition. Thereafter, the enriched cultures were further processed and purified. After which, presumptive Campylobacter colonies were isolated and later confirmed by PCR using specific primers for the detection of the genus Campylobacter, target species and virulence associated genes. Antimicrobial resistance profiles of the isolates were determined by disk diffusion method against a panel of 12 antibiotics and relevant genotypic resistance genes were assessed by PCR assay. A total of 438 presumptive Campylobacter isolates were obtained; from which, 162 were identified as belonging to the genus Campylobacter of which 36.92% were obtained from water samples and 37.11% from milk samples. The 162 confirmed isolates were further delineated into four species, of which, 7.41%, 27.16% and 8.64% were identified as C. fetus, C. jejuni and C. coli respectively. Among the virulence genes screened for, the iam (32.88%) was most prevalent, followed by flgR (26.87%) gene and cdtB and cadF (5.71% each) genes. Of the 12 antibiotics tested, the highest phenotypic resistance displayed by Campylobacter isolates was against clindamycin (95.68%), while the lowest was observed against imipenem (21.47%). Other high phenotypic resistance displayed by the isolates were against erythromycin (95.06%), followed by ceftriaxone (93.21%), doxycycline (87.65%), azithromycin and ampicillin (87.04% each), tetracycline (83.33%), chloramphenicol (78.27%), ciprofloxacin (77.78%), levofloxacin (59.88%) and gentamicin (56.17%). Relevant resistance genes were assessed in the isolates that showed high phenotypic resistance, and the highest resistance gene harbored by the isolates was catII (95%) gene while VIM, KPC, Ges, bla-OXA-48-like, tetC, tetD, tetK, IMI and catI genes were not detected. The occurrence of this pathogen and the detection of virulence and antimicrobial resistance-associated genes in Campylobacter isolates recovered from milk/water samples position them a risk to human health.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Porphyry Cu deposits in China contain a total resource of ~47 million tonnes (Mt) Cu at average grades ranging mostly from 0.2 to 0.7% Cu (most <0.5% Cu), accounting for 42% of China’s Cu reserves. In terms of contained Cu, 14 Cu-rich porphyry deposits are classified as giant (≥2.0 Mt Cu), and 38 are classified as intermediate (≥0.06 Mt Cu). These giant and intermediate deposits are mainly concentrated in seven belts or districts: Gangdese belt, southern Tibet; Yulong and Zhongdian belts, eastern Tibet; Duolong district, central Tibet; Dexing district and Middle-Lower Yangtze River Valley belt, eastern China; and the Central Asian orogenic belt in northern China. Other isolated giant deposits (e.g., Tongkuangyu) occur in the North China craton. These deposits were formed during Paleoproterozoic (~2100 Ma), Ordovician (~480–440 Ma), Carboniferous (~330–310 Ma), Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous (~215–105 Ma), and Eocene to Miocene (~40–14 Ma), with the majority forming during the latter two time periods. Adakite-like (e.g., high Sr/Y ratio) magmas are most favorable for the formation of the porphyry Cu deposits in China, although some deposits in the Central Asian orogenic belt and the Duolong district are associated with normal calc-alkaline intrusions with low Sr/Y ratios. Approximately 50% of the giant and ~35% of the intermediate porphyry Cu deposits in China formed in arc settings. The Xiongcun, Pulang, Duobuza, Bolong, and Naruo deposits in Tibet formed in continental arc settings, and the Central Asian porphyry Cu belt deposits (e.g., Tuwu-Yandong, Duobaoshan, Wushan, Baogutu, and Bainaimiao) formed in island-arc settings. Ore-forming porphyry magmas in arc settings in China probably formed by partial melting of metasomatized mantle wedge. Ascent and emplacement of porphyry magmas in arc settings was controlled by transpressional (e.g., strike-slip fault systems) or compressional deformation (e.g., arc-parallel thrust fault systems). Approximately 40% of the giant and ~65% of the intermediate porphyry Cu deposits in China occur in postcollisional settings. These deposits are mainly concentrated in the Tibetan Plateau, including four giant (e.g., Qulong, Jiama, Zhunuo, and Yulong) and more than 15 intermediate-size deposits. The mineralized intrusions in postcollisional settings were generated by partial melting of subduction-modified mafic lower crust. Ore-forming metals and sulfur were derived from remelting of sulfide phases that were introduced during precollisional arc magmatism, and the water in the Cu-forming porphyry magmas was concentrated during dehydration reactions in the upper parts of the subducting continental plate and/or degassing of mantle-derived H2O-rich ultrapotassic and/or alkaline mafic magmas. Porphyry magma ascent and emplacement were controlled by regional shear zones (e.g., strike-slip fault systems) or extensional fracture arrays (e.g., normal fault systems) in postcollisional settings. Porphyry Cu deposits in China mostly show typical alteration zoning from inner potassic to outer propylitic zones, with variable phyllic and argillic overprints. Potassic alteration can be generally subdivided into inner K-feldspar and outer biotite zones, with K-feldspar–rich alteration mostly earlier than biotite-rich alteration. Phyllic alteration generally comprises early-stage chlorite-sericite and late-stage quartz-sericite alteration, and the chlorite-sericite zone typically occurs beneath the quartz-sericite zone. Lithocaps are absent in most of the porphyry Cu deposits in China, even for those in the youngest (~30–14 Ma) ores in the Gangdese belt. Alteration architecture of the porphyry Cu deposits in China is mainly dependent on the structural setting and degree of telescoping. Telescoping of alteration assemblages in the postcollisional porphyry Cu deposits is more strongly developed than that in island and continental arc porphyry Cu deposits. This is probably because postcollisional porphyry Cu deposits and districts in China either experienced higher rates of synmineralization uplift or suffered more complex structural superposition, compared with those formed in magmatic arcs. Hypogene Cu mineralization in some giant porphyry deposits in China (e.g., Xiongcun, Qulong) is associated with potassic alteration and particularly with late-stage biotite alteration. But hypogene mineralization for more than 50% of giant porphyry Cu deposits, including the Dexing, Yulong, Tuwu-Yandong, Duobaoshan, and Tongkuangyu deposits, is characterized by a Cu sulfide assemblage with phyllic alteration, particularly with chlorite-sericite alteration. The presence of several world-class postcollisional porphyry Cu provinces in China demonstrates that the generation of porphyry Cu deposits does not always require a direct link to oceanic plate subduction.

Abstract:
At the beginning of the 20th century the memories of the Russian nobility depicting the life of the previous generations of their family were very often written in the form of family traditions. The memoirs of the last representatives of the Wulf family and their closest relatives, residents and guests of the Bernovo and Kurovo-Pokrovskoye estates of the Staritsky district of the Tver province are the most illustrative material in this regard. Their male peers were left out of creating memoirs because, as household experience shows, it is women who are the keepers of family traditions, remembering the dates of home holidays, household minutiae and details, and because of more intensive communication with children they are more involved in the formation of their family memory. Women are more likely to fix love stories, household anecdotes. Texts by A.N. Ponafidina, O.N. Wulf, A.N. Bolt, and V.D. Bubnova dedicated to the “golden age” of the noble estate of the early 19th century, when A.S. Pushkin visited the Staritsky estates of the Wulfs and their relatives, should be called secondary memoirs. They have not seen Pushkin themselves, and the people of the previous generation who told them about Pushkin had seen him when they had been children. Therefore, in these secondary memoirs are constantly found details of a legendary character of the poet.

Abstract BY nightfall I came to Aulie-Ata, which means the Tomb of the Holy Father. Like the majority of the new Russian towns, it sprawls over a disproportionately wide area. One would think it had been designed as a rival to Petrograd or Paris itself. The market-place was bigger than the Place de la Concorde, and very tiring it was, too, walking across it. Of course, there was no attempt at planning. On the other hand, every house was a complete homestead, with a huge farmyard and garden. All the houses are built of raw bricks. There was no pavement nor footpath nor water supply. All buildings of any pretence and the workshops of the postal station were in an abandoned half-ruined condition. Horses and carriages were in a shocking condition of neglect and collapse. The management of the posts for the district had been taken out of the hands of the original contractor and passed into those of the “ Proletariat of Workers and Peasants.” The whole day long there were carriages with pairs and troikas dashing about with halfdrunken workmen and cabbies, cursing and swearing horribly and flogging the poor horses mercilessly. The wretched animals were covered with sweat and foam, all their tormented bodies quivering, with wild looks in their starting eyes, trying to bolt in terror. The air was filled with the din of mad yells and wild cries. “ Why don’t you stop torturing the poor brutes ? “ I asked the manager of the station.

The tower, providing a serpentine walkway through the treetops with a maximum height of 15m, is designed to be universally accessible. The route is based on a series of straight lengths connected with abrupt changes of direction. The 2m wide walkway has an overall length of 270m with a constant 1:15 slope. There are four intermediate horizontal platforms intended as relaxation and viewing areas, each one with different sizes. The principal deck structure is steel, formed from a central tube with a diameter of 762mm. The tube is made up of a series of 2m long straight segments which form the walkway change of direction. Steel cantilever ribs are located at 1.5m centres to support both the solid timber decking and the 1.3m high guardrail. The central steel tube is supported at multiple locations by tripod columns formed from GL32c glulam timber sections varying from 200x200mm to 350x350mm. The timber columns are anchored to the bedrock located close to the surface in this area. Steel walkway sections were shop welded in transportable lengths with bolted on- site connections. Timber to steel connections were also bolted. Steel is painted for corrosion protection. All timber, both solid C24 for decking and glulam columns, is treated for external use. A 3D SAP2000 FE model was used for verifications including a buckling analysis for the slender timber columns and a modal analysis to check for frequencies that would make the structure susceptible to pedestrian-induced vibrations.</p>

Abstract:
This brief explains youth perceptions of COVID-19 vaccination and outlines key considerations for engaging with and building trust among young people living in Ealing, London. Within the category of ‘young people,’ there are differences in vaccination based on age and ethnicity. This brief is based on research, including a review of the literature and in-depth interviews and focus groups with 62 youth across Ealing to contextualise youth perspectives of COVID-19 vaccination and highlight themes of trust/distrust. We contribute ethnographic and participatory evidence to quantitative evaluations of vaccine roll-out. Key considerations for addressing youth distrust regarding the COVID-19 vaccine are presented, followed by additional regional context. This work builds on a previous SSHAP brief on vaccine equity in Ealing. This brief was produced by SSHAP in collaboration with partners in Ealing. It was authored by Megan Schmidt-Sane (IDS), Tabitha Hrynick (IDS), Jillian Schulte (Case Western Reserve University), Charlie Forgacz-Cooper (Youth Advisory Board), and Santiago Ripoll (IDS), in collaboration with Steve Curtis (Ealing Council), Hena Gooroochurn (Ealing Council), Bollo Brook Youth Centre, and Janpal Basran (Southall Community Alliance), and reviews by Helen Castledine (Ealing Public Health), Elizabeth Storer (LSE) and Annie Wilkinson (IDS). The research was funded through the British Academy COVID-19 Recovery: USA and UK fund (CRUSA210022). Research was based at the Institute of Development Studies. This brief is the responsibility of SSHAP.
