Abstract:
The following is an account of glottalization and gemination in the traditional vernacular of the Greater Bolton area. Bolton is a town situated 12 miles north-west of Manchester in northwestern England. The Greater Bolton area consists of the county borough of Bolton, Farnworth municipal borough, and the urban districts of Horwich, Turton, Little Lever and Kearsley. Its population is approximately 230,000.From a consideration of various historical, industrial, economic, social and administrative factors, the Greater Bolton area can be shown to be a relatively homogeneous cultural unit within the urban field of influence of Bolton. This cultural homogeneity is reflected in the speech of the area, which is also relatively homogeneous in character, and distinctive when compared to the speech of other parts of Greater Manchester County, South Lancashire and Merseyside (cf. Shorrocks 1980:1–27).

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Although campylobacteriosis caused by Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli has been increasingly reported worldwide owing to the consumption of contaminated poultry and fresh produce, the current detection protocols are not selective enough to inhibit unspecific microbes other than these pathogens. Five antibiotics were separately added to Bolton broth, and the survival rates of 18 Campylobacter spp. and 79 non-Campylobacter spp. were evaluated. The survival rate of the non-Campylobacter spp. was the lowest in Bolton broth with rifampin (6.3%), followed by cefsulodin (12.7%), novobiocin (16.5%), and potassium tellurite and sulfamethozaxole (both 17.7%). Also the most effective concentration of rifampin was found to be 12.5 mg/L, which markedly inhibited non-Campylobacter strains while not affecting the survival of Campylobacter strains. After the Campylobacter spp. were enriched in Bolton broth supplemented with 12.5 mg/L rifampin (R-Bolton broth), CampyFood Agar (CFA) was found to be better in selectively isolating the pathogens in the enrichment broth than the International Organization for Standardization method of using modified charcoal cefoperazone deoxycholate agar (mCCDA) for this step. When applied to natural food samples—here, romaine lettuce, pepper, cherry tomato, Korean leek, and chicken—the R-Bolton broth–CFA combination decreased the number of false-positive results by 50.0, 4.2, 20.8, 50.0, and 94.4%, respectively, compared with the International Organization for Standardization method (Bolton broth–mCCDA combination). These results demonstrate that the combination of R-Bolton broth and CFA is more efficient in detecting C. jejuni and C. coli in poultry and fresh produce and thus should replace the Bolton broth–mCCDA combination.

Hahlo, Kenneth Geoffrey. "The Gujaratis of Bolton : the leaders and the led." Thesis, Open University, 1993. http://oro.open.ac.uk/57417/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of local rather than national black politics. The participation of Gujaratis, who comprise the largest ethnic minority community in Bolton, in local politics is constrained by their loyalty to Gujarati identities and by racism within political parties. The settlement patterns of Gujaratis in Bolton reflect in part the socio-economic constraints experienced by black immigrants in Britain generally, and in part their allegiance to faction, caste, sect and religious identities. On the basis of some of these social identities have developed organisations which respond to particular social, religious and political needs. These organisations provide the only opportunities for the development of black structures of support and leadership within this large community. Notions of racism are based upon a dialogue between white and Gujarati notions of what is common sense. These notions form the basis of Gujaratis' perceptions of social distances that separate them from others. The core of support for leaders is based upon personal social networks. The social characteristics of these social networks influence the patterns of close friendships between Gujaratis and members of other communities in the town. These patterns show that Gujaratis exclude Gujaratis who belong to other Gujarati religious communities and members of other ethnic communities, black and white, from close friendships. Friendships with those perceived to be social distant are of lower intensity, thus excluding these people from sharing in a common body of Gujarati knowledge. In the context of Bolton these Gujaratis find themselves unable to participate within the formal political hierarchy and decision making arenas. The local Community Relations Council offers Gujarati and other black leaders of organisations a forum within which they can meet with some of the locally and nationally elected political representatives. The debate centres on events, involving Gujarati and other participants, which allow leaders of Gujarati organisations and politicians and other members of the CRC to negotiate the power relations between black and white. However, the consequence is that the Gujaratis are still relegated to the periphery of formal political decision-making arenas.

Abstract:
AbstractAs 1961 began, John Bolton re-joined CSIRO in early January. On 24 February 1961, a meeting of the 210-foot Radio Telescope Committee (aka the GRT) was held with Bowen (chair), Minnett (secretary), Pawsey, Beard, Higgs, Bolton, Cooper, Day, Mathewson, McCready and McGee. Pawsey had prepared a document 2 days earlier that set out a plan of action for the GRT; the construction was expected to be completed by August 1961. Pawsey described Phase 1 tests of the new aerial, consisting of determinations of the shape of the dish, pointing accuracy as a function of position, wind and temperature. An example was the determination of the “… directional patterns at various polarisations to access dish accuracy, the determination of the radio axis of the dish … The measurements will require a series of radio sources of known positions distributed over the coverage of the telescope.”

Abstract:
AbstractBy 1955, a decade after the first exciting observing projects, the landscape of radio astronomy had shifted considerably. With many more research groups now starting up, and the lines of research growing both more diverse and more specialised, remaining a global research leader required making riskier, more strategic decisions. In retrospect it can be seen that this was largely accomplished in Australia by the building of the now-iconic large “Dish” radio telescope at Parkes, NSW, and by the success of the research projects led by John Bolton through the 1960s. The funding and construction of the large dish took nearly a decade to achieve and was by no means certain through much of that time. Robertson has provided a thorough description of these events in his two books from 1992, Beyond Southern Skies—Radio Astronomy and the Parkes Telescope and in 2017, Radio Astronomer—John Bolton and a New Window on the Universe.

Abstract:
The biggest users of bolts are the auto and aerospace industries. In the oil and gas industry bolted connections are often used for high integrity systems and are thus vital for the long term performance of (the given structure) e.g. structural components, pressurised vessels and piping. It is therefore of paramount importance that bolted connections can be designed and installed to provide the required service life for the various exposure and service conditions. Bolting can fail for a number of reasons (e.g. overload, fatigue or corrosion). The materials selection and manufacturing, bolt fabrication, applied protective coating and the final bolt installation are all factors which need to executed adequately to ensure that a long service performance. The actual service conditions and the external environment impact and maintenance will subsequently determine the service life of the bolting. To improve the reliability of bolted connections, a joint industry project” “Corrosion protection and maintenance of bolting and fasteners” was initiated by DNV in 2001. The initial part of the project will be to provide a summary of the best practice for corrosion protection of bolted connections for offshore application. Here bolted connection embrace materials selection of bolts, corrosion protection of bolts and performance of bolts on flanges and other mechanical connections (e.g. cranes). The main part of the project is a 10 year testing program of pretensioned stud bolts. The exposure program will be performed in the marine atmospheric zone, splash zone and submerged zone. This will be performed at the DNV seawater laboratories in Bergen and at the LaQue Center, North Carolina, US.

Abstract:
This paper examines two key themes regarding the use of hydraulic tensioners to assemble pressure boundary bolted joints. The first theme is the amount of overload required to compensate for load loss that occurs due to both nut-to-tensioner mechanical interaction and, in the case of less than 100% tensioning, bolt-to-bolt mechanical interaction during assembly using hydraulic tensioners. The second theme is to examine the effect on the required assembly procedure if the target bolt stress value is close to yield. This paper has practical application for general assembly of large diameter bolts, but in particular for assembly of low strength bolting, such as A193-B8M class 1 and class 2 bolts.
