Abstract:
The doctoral thesis "The reception of Heinrich Böll in Spain" analyzes the spreading process of the work of the most published contemporary German writer in this country, and proposes a periodization for it. The work is based on two wide fields of study: on the one side the 'external reception' of the process (role of publishers and reactions of literary criticism, scholars and of the academic world) and on the other side the 'textual analysis' of some in Catalan and Spanish translated works of the author. For the first area a sociological perspective is adopted and the Spanish and Catalan processes are compared with the German one, for the second area the Juliane House model for translation quality assessment is used (which is also based on textual comparison) and adapted for the analysis of fictional narrative texts. I have attempted to relate the two perspectives of analysis as far as the methodological procedures have allowed it. My work does not pursue an evaluative aim, rather a descriptive one.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

The present study aims at to investigate German Literature mainly the first years after the Second World War and show how the 47 Group was built and developed, since it was composed by young writers mainly ex-prisoners who believed in literature as a new beginning and a way of helping people to find a new way of thinking after have been living by the atrocities of the war. We pay a special attention to this Group which had regularly or twice a year met for twenty years to appreciate the reading of the components presented in colloquies. In the first chapter we introduce the factors that contributed for the composition of this Group approaching literature and the writers of the time of the national-socialist regime pointing the writers who were unsatisfied with the dictatorial politics of Hitler and were exiled abroad, and also the ones who stayed in German living in a kind of "internal emigration" without writing or just for entertainment literature but not being free of the survey of the regime. We also highlight the Der Ruf magazine (The Calling) pressed in American Campus of the German war prisoners as part of a program called "re-education", once German occupation and administration had just been provided right after its defeat. From 1946 to 1947 this magazine was also edited in Monique and worked as a precursor of the 47 Group formation. The second chapter is dedicated to the Group development, to its main components profile and to the phases the Group went through during its 20 years of existence. Therefore, we based mainly on a Study Group called The Göttingen Seminar organized by Heinz Ludwig Arnold among others. The last two chapters were based in the works of Günter Eich and Heinrich Böll as representative writers of the German Literature postwar aiming at the thematic of social representation in Eich's poems and broadcasting plays and in Böll's stories and novels. It is a bibliographic research that searches its theoretical in literary critics, philosophers, sociologists and other writers such as Marcel Reich-Ranicke, Émile Durkheim, Theodor Adorno, Antonio Cândido, Maurice Halbwachs, Forster and Riegel, Alfred Andersch, Heinrich Vormweg, Hans Werner Richter, Heinrich Böll and Günter Eich.

Buhanan, Kurt R. "Rethinking Trümmerliteratur: The Aesthetics of Destruction Ruins, Ruination, and Ruined Language in the Works of Böll Grass, and Celan." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2007. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/830.

Full text
Abstract:
Trümmerliteratur - literally “rubble-literature" - is a brand of literature that became important after the Second World War, led by Heinrich Böll, whom I term the apologist of German Trümmerliteratur. Typically included under this classification are the writers who began to produce in the years immediately following the war, and in whose work the rubble and ruins of the landscape figure prominently. Böll provided the programmatic framework for the movement in his “Bekenntnis zur Trümmerliteratur" but his relationship to another type of ruin writing presents a point of friction when he appears to be working in a romantic mode to describe his experience of Irish ruins. This problem was the point of departure for a new thinking of ruins. Discovering the strains of rubble literature in Grass and Celan presents the second part of this study, which dramatically recasts these writers, demanding that the presence and prevalence of ruin images and themes receive consideration. Grass's hermeneutical ruins, a reading of narrative gaps, presents the first level of ruin, separating the reader from the text's reliability and authorial immediacy. The next type of ruins that Grass presents is the violent ruinating involved in the the act of writing itself, whether chiseled into gravestones or flecking virginal paper. Similarly, Celan's images of ruins are produced in a form consciously resembling berubbled structures, with dashes and slashes often left jutting dangerously into the space of a wide margin, like the rusty reinforcing steel bars of modern construction. Considering these writers in these terms leads to the question of language and how they attempt to overcome the problem of a language manipulated into complicity in the crimes of totalitarianism. Finally, there is the transparency offered in the porous structure of the ruin. These houses prove incapable of providing the shelter or protection. The inhabitants are exposed, exhibited to the observer with all of the intimate contents of quotidian existence, the low objects of the everyday. Entrance into this interiority is a powerful part of what makes the ruins an interesting object for observation. In this literature of ruins and rubble the reader is offered this transparency, an offer of entrance into society's interiority.

Abstract:
O romance Wo warst du, Adam? (1951), de Heinrich Böll, e o \"diário coletivo\" Das Echolot. Barbarossa \'41.
The novel Wo warst du, Adam? (1951), from Heinrich Böll, and the \"collective diary\" Das Echolot. Barbarossa \'41. (2002), from Walter Kempowski, are literary representations of the Second World War. The novel was written and published in the post-war period, during which the german society found itself amidst suffering for material and for family losses, and also confused with the manipulative propaganda that had been used by the german government. The society was also gaining access to information about the horrors and hideous crimes that had been perpetrated by the nazi soldiers, especially against the jewish people. The \"collective diary\", on its turn, is composed by a collage of authentic individual texts written mostly during the Second World War, by people who participated in it and by those who lived during that period. There is no voice to connect the testimonies, and the interpretation of such an amount of dissonant voices is left exclusively to the reader. Because of the fifty-year period between the publications and the differences in literary style, this research aims at verifying if the change in literary structure and the focus on the characters/witnesses are connected to the change in the current perspective towards the Second World War, which derives from the collective memory of the social group regarding an event that took place in the past and from which literature incorporates some elements. This research is not an empirical study on the reception of both works. It studies the potential these works have in configuring an image of the war to the reader. Thus, a comparison is established between some characters and central witnesses, not only those who had actively participated in the war, but also those who had accompanied its developments, or even from the perspective of those qualified as victims. The work refrains from making judgements of the witnesses as individuals, but their texts are analyzed and they are compared with the fictional characters of the novel.

Abstract:
In his 1974 novella The lost Honor of Katharina Blum Heinrich Böll argues for the constitutional guarantee of presumption of innocence. He states that this principle is violated when defamatory media headlines make unwarranted accusations against a private citizen destroying their reputation as part of a targeted smear campaign. The novella characterizes such intentional campaigns as both criminalizing and dehumanizing. Böll argues that the government should influence the press to conform to the limits implied in the institution of freedom of press. He shows the helplessness of a private citizen under attack from a smear campaign when the government takes a laissez-faire attitude toward sensationalized media. This thesis, "Neither citizen nor human: Prisoner of the media and the state: systematically linked dehumanization and radicalization: Two Interpretations of Heinrich Böll's: The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum," evaluates the sympathetic role that media and government play in the radicalization of the private citizen. This thesis establishes a direct relation between smear campaigns and radical or extremist behavior. This thesis shows that the victim of the media acts out erratically in a state of panic and terror brought on by feelings of helplessness. This thesis supports Boell's position that this erratic behavior leads to suicide or violence against perceived oppressors or others. This thesis argues for the habitualization of violence as a precise definition of the radicalization of the individual to violence. This thesis utilizes Böll's fictionalized account of Katharina Blum. This thesis makes comparisons between targeted smear campaigns in the BRD in the period 1967-1974, roughly the period of the Brandt Administration, and the case of Katharina Blum. This thesis demonstrates the systematically linked oppression of oppositional voices by the West German government with media-driven smear campaigns. Böll's essays on topics including human rights and the potential benefits of political radicals help inform this study. Böll's novella demonstrates the vulnerability of all citizens to victimization of the press. Boell shows that violent radical behavior results from smear campaigns against private citizens. Boell argues that this radicalization is clearly rooted in a sales-driven media sympathetic to the state's abuses of power.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the short story “Wanderer, kommst du nach Spa ...” (1950) by the German author Heinrich Böll (1917-1985). The well-established interpretation of this famous short story is that it deals with the dismal fact that the Nazis ended the development of Western culture, which cumulatively had been on its way since Greek antiquity. In this paper another reading is proposed, namely that the short story sheds light on the influence of the Romantic era in Germany and that a certain interpretation and use of Romanticism provided some of the seeds to the obscure ideas of the Nazi era. Research on Böll´s early writings is presented. The notion of cultural memory is introduced. The intertextual connections between Bölls text and other texts are being uncovered. Most fruitful proves the connection between “Wanderer” and the poem “Der Spaziergang” (1795) by Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) to be. “Wanderer” can be read as a satirical version of Schillers poem. Reasons for Böll to choose Schiller’s elegy as a target are discussed at length. A parable in the story, ”wie ein Gesicht eines Schlafenden” / like a face of a sleeping person, unfolds an undertext to the short story, a Catholic text. Jesus, the Holy Communion, prayers and the eternal cross are present. Wanderer can be read as a requiem over the young soldier. Further, the inability of the wounded soldier to connect to his surroundings is interpreted as a parallell to Germany at the end of the war; the Nazis had stolen the Heimat from the people and it was no longer possible to interpret the world as something you belonged to. While Heinrich Böll on the surface of the text tries to recapture the German language from its nazi-poisend condition, the protagonist within the text regains his identity by means of his own handwriting - a part of his language.

Abstract:
The comparative thematic study of non fictional texts written by boell, grass and enzensberger shows the complicated nature of people often traped in a reducing image. Much aware of the frightful past and national trauma, they do not intend to escape the responsability of human beings, witnesses of their time and citizens wishing to help post-war german society to become deeply democratic. Beyond the specific character of each author, it investigates convergencies and divergencies, continuities and discontinuities, major changes in constantly fluctuating persons caught in the flow of history, according to their favourite ways of interfering in public life (politics, society, culture). As the sixties run, literature's sacralization has to make up for writer's growing secularization. Ethical values transcend ideological gaps, uncompromisingness and compromises account for the relationship between writer and reality in a process leading from individuality to collectivity, from the past to present time, from the german microcosm to the wide world, from literary fiction to actuality. Communication means are located in the space between discourse and practice, vivid junction between language and action, irreplaceable link in the intercourse of writer and society

Abstract:
This project examines the role of unreliable narration in the works of Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811) and Heinrich Böll (1917-1985) as a form of political engagement. Its first section provides an extensive historical analysis of the scholarship on unreliable narration within the field of narratology. It argues for a shift away from structuralist narratological models and toward a hybrid model of historical, cultural and cognitive narratology. Furthermore, the case is made for a reconceptualization of unreliable narration as a fundamental form of "discrepant awareness" and as the equivalent of dramatic irony in prose. Building on this insight, it locates unreliable narrration in the trajectory of avant-gardist and partisan writing. Drawing on concepts of "subversive affirmation", such as Umberto Eco's "communications guerilla warfare", Michel Foucault's "non-positive affirmation", Slavoj Zizek's "over-identification", and Linda Hutcheon's theory of post-modern irony, it argues that unreliable narration is frequently used as a pedagogical tool by way of parodic subversion. The subsequent study of the works of Kleist and Böll further substantiates this claim. In trying to conform to the conventions of his time, the narrator in Kleist's journalistic writing and prose repeatedly cites a variety of contemporary genres, such as the "moralische Erzählung" and the bourgeois tragedy, as well as the aesthetic ideals of German Romanticism. His unreliability, however, allows Kleist not only to circumvent Napoleonic censorship, but also to infiltrate the public discourse and sabotage its codes. A close reading of the novella Michael Kohlhaas reveals how Kleist's narrator makes use of manipulated focalization to steer the reader's sympathies. By way of contrast, Heinrich Böll, in his novels Group Portrait with Lady and The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum, uses a narrator who sees himself as writing in the tradition

Inksetter, Hamish. "Perceptions of Evil: A Comparison of Moral Perspectives in Nazi Propaganda and Anti-Nazi Literature." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/31917.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how the concept of evil was understood by opposing German perspectives during the era of National Socialist rule (1933-1945). The rise of Nazism in Germany marked a period of massive political upheaval wherein the National Socialist government encouraged the masses to view the world in terms of a great struggle between forces of good and evil. This was the central theme of their propaganda, which zealously encouraged racialist beliefs in the popular consciousness, and was based on assumptions of German superiority and Jewish evil. Despite Hitler's apparent success in creating an obedient nation, a significant number of Germans opposed his rule, amongst whom a small group of writers expressed their discontent through creative fiction. Through a comparison of the worldviews communicated through political propaganda and anti-Nazi literature, it is revealed that the crux of the divide between their opposing perspectives hinged on the meaning of evil. Since evil is a concept with many meanings, this thesis approaches the subject thematically. The comparison begins by focusing on the perception of evil as an all-corrupting force that had taken hold of Germany, followed by an exploration of how power and brutality were understood, ending with a comparison of views on how the struggle between good and evil took place on both a social and individual level. In addition to demonstrating the subjectivity of moral perspective during a tumultuous period of the recent past, this research reveals how the struggle against Nazism existed as a conflict of ideas. Moreover, the comparison of cultural sources (including Nazi art, visual propaganda, written texts such as Mein Kampf, and anti-Nazi creative fiction) demonstrates the value of art as a tool for conducting historical enquiry. Since the legacy of the Third Reich continues to directly influence modern perceptions of evil, exploring how evil was understood according to contemporary Germans – from both pro and anti-Nazi perspectives – is of particular historical interest.

Doig, Katherine.

Full text
Abstract:
Long fictions composed of one uninterrupted letter – monologic epistolary fictions – are underrepresented in critical discourse, and frequently shunted more or less overtly beyond its margins. Their existence is brought to light here by one play and fourteen novels in French, English, Italian and German, ranging from 1902 (Gide) to 2011 (Norman) via a cast of authors including Yourcenar, Coetzee, Amis and Celestini. This study aims firstly to fill the critical lacuna, establishing the dimensions of this new sub- genre. It measures the breadth of the formal definitions of the single-letter epistolary novel, the length of its inscription in literary history, and the depth conferred upon it by critical discourse about real letters, the letter-novel genre and a certain epistolary quality to be found in all literature, which our novels set themselves up to reflect and refract. Our rather disparate corpus of texts reveals the interest of this technical framework, haunted as it is by recurrent themes which illuminate the characteristics of monological epistolary writing. Firstly, the theme of one's own death (Yourcenar, Coetzee, Bernstein, Robinson, Amis) shines a light on the physical structure of any text, rendered visible in the format of the letter; this conjunction suggests the idea of the text as corpse. A series of apocalyptic universes complicates this rather empirical portrait, which reads like the symbol of the Death of the Author; novels by Coetzee, Amis and Auster use complex portraits of fictional time to suggest the possibility of coincidence, overlap, meetings both epistolary and literary. These two chapters set up the terms of a final debate concerning literary communication, investigated via the symbol of the double (Gide, Coeztee, Bernstein, Celestini). After the narrative of the text itself and the implied drama of the letter's trajectory, a pragmatic dimension comes to light. This final analysis allows us to investigate the ethics of correspondence, and the letter as one key to understanding those of fiction itself

Adcock, L. "The "reality" of cultural violence in the novels of Heinrich Böll." Thesis, 2021. https://eprints.utas.edu.au/45555/1/Adcock_whole_thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, I offer a different perspective on the works of the acclaimed German author Heinrich Böll. I propose that a form of violence called cultural violence accurately reflects the "reality" ("Wirklichkeit") that Böll strove to convey in his novels and that this expression of violence is a theme that unifies the author’s body of works. Extensive research of existing literature corroborates the originality of this interpretation. Cultural violence was identified by the Norwegian sociologist Johan Galtung. He defines it as violence involving aspects of culture, such as ideologies and doctrines, that incite and legitimise the harm individuals or institutions cause (Galtung, "Cultural Violence" 291, 295). Galtung’s recognition of this form of violence came about through his research on violence and its different expressions, which is an integral component of his quest to promote peace (Galtung, "Cultural Violence" 291). While Böll passed away before Galtung developed his concept of cultural violence, he too recognised that violence could result from the covert influence of societal and structural forces (Böll, "Drei Tage" 406). Böll was particularly aware of the potential for unseen societal forces, especially ideologies, to give rise to violence, as he spent his formative years in the political turmoil of the Third Reich. He attributed the cause of these unprecedented twelve years in German history to the "idiotic blindness" of Germans to "political realities" that facilitated Hitler’s rise to power (Böll, “Erinnerung" 518-519). To counter this ignorance and prevent a repetition of its violent consequences, Böll sought to draw attention to and foster an understanding of these "realities" through the concepts of the "topical" ("das Aktuelle") and the "reality" (“die Wirklichkeit"). Here, the "topical" represents the readily observable contemporary events and issues of everyday life, and it is these topics that he centred his novels on (Böll, "Der Zeitgenosse und die Wirklichkeit" 71). But Böll’s narratives are not just shallow reflections of current issues (Böll, "Der Zeitgenosse und die Wirklichkeit" 74). To him, the "topical" was a façade that must be penetrated in order to reveal to his readers the "reality" of the hidden influences that serve to manipulate and shape it (Böll, "Der Zeitgenosse" 71). While the origins of Böll’s concepts related to the covert influence of the ideology of fascism, he later identified a number of invisible societal forces, such as the capitalist political ideology and doctrine, religious ideology and language, as being integral to understanding the "reality". But aspects of culture are of course abstract concepts that require an agency through which to exert their influence. For Böll, this involved the second covert force that he identified as having the potential to lead to violence – structures, namely institutions (Böll, "Drei Tage" 406). It is the interaction between the cultural and institutional forces that shapes topical events and represents "reality". Examination of Böll’s major works reveals the author’s depiction of this interplay between the two covert forces as the incitement and legitimisation by ideologies and doctrines of the violence of institutions. Among the institutions Böll drew particular attention to are the German government and military, the church and the press. I argue that Böll’s "reality" of the shaping of the "topical" through a process in which aspects of culture are the source of the violence and institutions are the agents through which it is exerted, encapsulates Galtung’s concept of cultural violence. I propose that Böll’s portrayal of this "reality" serves as a unifying element in his oeuvre through its consistent presence in his novels.

Full text
Abstract:
Jewish-born Hilde Domin (1909-2006) returned to Germany in 1961 after more than twenty-three years of exile, spent in Italy, the UK, and the Dominican Republic. Ever since her first activities as a translator, poet and novelist, Domin criticized post-war Germany severely. Nevertheless, contrary to other exiled jewish-origin writers, Domin – who was defined as the 'Poetess of the return' by H.G. Gadamer – always proved to be ready to overcome and forgive, provided a systematic come-to-terms would take place in the newly-born Federal Republic of Germany. Despite Domin and G. Eich were discussing the most urgent political issues of their time (eg. the role of the new left, the Middl East Issue, the German “Süsterhenn law” (for putting artistic liberty under the control of a moral law), they had a thoroughly different idea of poetry and engagement. Whereas Domin would openly take sides, Eich’s lyric (including the Maulwürfe (1968)) never openly addressed a given, definite subject. It is no surprise thus that Eich always refused to interpret his own poems for the Domin-edited anthology Doppelinterpretationen (1965). The analysis of the discussion and the lyric work by Domin an Eich gives insight into the possible and actual role of poetry in contemporary society. Also with H. Böll Domin debated relevant political issues of the time, but without any focus on the literary work as such. Domin was very critical towards the establishment of post-war (Western) Germany, mostly as Böll was, but, again, she expected him to explicitly take the field. The different idea of the writer vis-à-vis of society and politics becomes well evident with an open letter Domin wrote to Böll in 1971, to which he replied severely, stating that he wanted not to have any public image, nor to be one, and that Germany needed no preceptors. Thus, the major difference between Domin and Böll was their view of the intellectual’s role in society. Contrary to Domin, Austrian exiled and London-based poet E. Fried was programmatically writing – according to Domin – political poems. Their different view, both of technical literary issues, and of the political content becomes evident in the discussion about Fried’s poems to be included in Domin’s lyric anthology Nachkrieg und Unfrieden (1970), in which they discuss many literature topics, including poems by Paul Celan meant for the anthology. The correspondence deals with the so-called Roma-Affäre, an episode of racism against the Roma-community, the Middle-East Issue and the related German and Western positions, the Vietnam war, clearyfying for instance the difference between poetry as such and the political poem. The study highlights Hilde Domin’s relevant contribution to the discourse of memory in post-war Western Germany.

Nam, Wan-Seok. Doctoral thesis, 2000. https://repositorium.ub.uni-osnabrueck.de/handle/urn:nbn:de:gbv:700-2000091590.

Full text
