Abstract:
Political consumption is a manner of impinging politically that has become more frequent lately. Adolescents seem to be attracted by the idea of expressing oneself politically through ones wallet. The purpose of this analysis is to elucidate this essay’s participants’ manner of expressing political consumption and analyze how they discuss motives against and for political consumption with a sociological perspective. To accomplish this, this essay will aim to answer the following questions: In what manner do the participants express their political consumption and what are their motives for and against political consumption?   In order to answer the essay’s purpose and questions, two focus group interviews have been made. In these interviews, the participants explain how they express their political consumption and their own motives for and against it. Furthermore, the participants where then given the opportunity to discuss the motives from a broader, more common perspective and a society-based perspective in order to broaden their own view. The results show that the participants expressed themselves through boycotting, boycotting and donations. They discovered a couple of different motives for and against political consumption. Among other things, the participants considered political consumption as a good complement to traditional politicians who wants to contact enterprises, whom today have more authority than before. Furthermore, they considered that many motives are based on egoistic thoughts or guilt and shame, as in that the participants’ own lifestyle is so much better than other people that they would feel guilt and shame if they did not express themselves. The biggest motive against political consumption was money and that the results of their political actions do not affect anything worthwhile. The analysis is based on Sociology, using two sociological theories by Giddens and Beck. The analysis show that the participants’ motives relates to the creation of one’s own identity rather than fear of social development. The motives coincide with other research done about political activity, but differ significantly in one subject, namely how big of a factor their political consumption is. Even though they all express political consumption, they rarely felt that their actions affected the political situation.  With that in mind, one can interpret that the creation of one’s own identity weighs more than the political action.

Abstract:
This study aims to survey the news coverage regarding the 2019 boycott of the Swedish national women’s ice hockey team. The primary focus is to convey the portrayal of both gender and the boycott, while eventual changes in framing through time and between newspapers have been considered. The study has utilized a theoretical framework, consisting of media theories Agenda-Setting Theory and Framing Theory as well as gender theory. Both research fields have also been supported by previous research. The study has been conducted through a mixed methodology with quantitative content analysis as well as a critical discourse analysis as described by Norman Fairclough. The material has been assorted through a stratified sampling, consisting of a total of 224 articles from 79 different Swedish newspapers published between August 1st and November 30th, 2019. The material for the critical discourse analysis consists of eight articles, two from each month, which has been chosen through a purposive sample to match the quantitative content analysis. The results show that women have a prominent and professional role in the news coverage, in both body text and headlines. However, women mainly defend the boycott and the choices that lead to the situation. Men discuss the topic more freely, although they are not the primary source of information. The boycott is portrayed as a consequence of an economic factor, rather than the treatment that lead to economic differences between men and women. The news coverage has mainly framed the event in similar ways, giving a tantamount report of the boycott. Although there is a measurable change through time, there are no differences in the main framing, such as the economical take of the articles. Therefore, this study concludes that framing contributes to the portrayal of traditional gender roles. Furthermore, the portrayal of the boycott promotes that men, who mainly write the articles, are unable to understand the problem of treatment, leading to framing that aims towards male readers.

Abstract:
Politicization and depoliticization are expressed in many different social areas and especially concerning sustainable consumption. Many claim that a shift in responsibility has arisen in political matters where more and more responsibility has been placed on individuals and companies. This essay examines whether this is expressed in the media arena regarding the responsibility for sustainable consumption from a gender perspective. This is done by examining how sustainable consumption is presented in three newspapers between 2015 and 2020. The purpose is to examine the extent to which sustainable consumption has been raised on the media agenda, which actor is assigned responsibility and whether there are any differences in the perception of responsibility between men and women. The empirical work in this essay consists of 38 articles from Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet. The method used in the analysis is a combination of a quantitative and qualitative approach. The results show that sustainable consumption has been given a relatively small amount of space on the media agenda between 2015 and 2020. The actor described as mainly responsible for sustainable consumption during the period under review is the policy. There is an even distribution behind the writing of the published articles between men and women and relatively small differences in the perception of responsibility. The conclusion shows that there are tendencies towards a politicization from both men and women in the media area in the reporting on sustainable consumption.

Abstract:
The use of cultural boycotts motivated by international conflicts between countries or regions has long been observed within sports. However, so far it has not been studied in other context of international competition like the Eurovision Song Contest. This essay aims to evaluate if we can understand political actions like boycotts or political symbolism through existing theories regarding political symbolism. This case study has chosen three withdrawals during the 21th century, which have been made due to conflict with another competing country. The withdrawals studied are Lebanon in 2005, Georgia in 2009 and Armenia in 2012. Through the use of political symbolism and boycotts as a political mean the three cases have been studied and classified. The result shows that current theories regarding political symbolism can be applied to understand two out of the three cases. The Lebanese withdrawal can be understood as a classic political boycott against Israel and the Georgian withdrawal as protest against Russia and therefor a case of political symbolism. The Armenian withdrawal has been characterized as a different kind of political symbolism than previously has been observed within the field of study. This essay has chosen to identify the case of Armenia as morally motivated political symbolism.

The following chapters examine Olympism in connection with selected political issues. These are political interests of states and other subjects, conflicts and cooperation among states. The question of boycotts is addressed in a separate chapter. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate the role of Olympism in international relations in a comprehensive manner. The thesis uses several historical examples that show how the Olympic Movement coped with given political challenges. From the mentioned examples and the evaluation of development, the most important factors for Olympism are finally deduced, i.e. commercialization, mediatization and politicization.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis focuses on ethical consumerism and its impact on the civic engagement of young women. Ethical consumerism, which includes, for example, boycott and buycott of products and services, is gaining momentum in the downfall of formal civic engagement. Citizens move to the market where they apply their ethical principles of noneconomic character. Their consumer choices are motivated by publicly beneficial motives. The theoretical part of the diploma thesis defines both civic society and its civic participation, and ethical consumerism. The theory of ethical consumerism addresses the definitions of basic concepts, the change in the political climate, which has allowed the expansion of ethical consumerism and the gender aspect of this phenomenon. The research focuses specifically on young women who live in Prague and regularly shop ethically, and their participation in civic engagement before and after becoming ethical consumers. From the data gathered, it was found out upon which products the informants exercised their ethical consumption, the representation of socio-economical, environmental and political motives and how they formally and informally engage in civil society. Choosing products is just like casting a vote. The consumer choice gives citizens a sense of who they are, it is...
