Abstract:
Green space area has contributed to increase atmospheric condition in surrounding area. Here we would like to test the cooling effect of small green area located in IPB campus Darmaga. We monitored air temperature at the morning (6 am) and afternoon (2 pm) for period March-June 2013 in three different sites in campus. Totally, we collected 658 observed data. Our results showed that partial shade area (PSA) and site were the most influenced factors that influence the cooling effect. It appears that the cooling effect is found until distance of 50 m from each monitoring site. The cooling effect varied among sites, but it is consistent that the maximum effect occurred during afternoon. Our analysis confirmed that PSA has contributed to the cooling effect until 28%. Other factors that contributed to the cooling effect were vegetation characteristics and geometric configuration of the canopy. Further, our findings revealed that greenspace area is valuable to minimize high temperature effect from traffic street.

Indigenous microorganisms effectively accelerate the decomposition of agricultural waste and agricultural waste that has been decomposed properly can be an organic fertilizer containing macro and microelements. The aim of the study was to determine the potential of indigenous cellulolytic fungi in the palm oil stems after replanting. The research was conducted at the Cikabayan Experimental Field Bogor Agricultural University, Dramaga, West Java. The experiment was conducted in October 2018 until January 2019, using a randomized complete block design consisting of four decomposition methods treatment: control, added with decomposer, chopping, and chopping+decomposer. The results showed that four isolates and isolate A were chosen to calculate the number of fungi at a dilution rate of 10-6 because they had the largest diameter. The identification results of isolate A were Trichoderma harzianum fungi and it was concluded that Trichoderma sp. in the palm oil stem after replanting, it has the potential as an indigenous cellulolytic fungus of oil palm trunks. The chopping+decomposer treatment can accelerate the weathering of the oil palm stem with a significant influence between the treatments that have met the requirements of compost maturity as specified in SNI 19-7030-2004 with ratio C/N 16.11 at 3 months after treatment. The fruit thinning treatment is known to be able to improve seed quality. This research aimed to increase the yield component and seed quality on two okra varieties (Naila and Zahira) through fruit thinning. This experiment was conducted in May until September 2018 at the Leuwikopo IPB Field, Postharvest Laboratory, and Seed Testing Laboratory, Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Bogor Agricultural University. This experiment conducted using the two-factors nested design, which is a fruit thinning factor as subplots consisting of five levels and okra varieties consisting of two levels. The results showed that the fruit thinning factor influenced the parameters of yield components (fruit length and weight per fruit) and 1,000 seeds weight. The variety factor influenced most of the yield component parameters and seed quality in okra plants. The thinning treatment of the first two fruits and elimination of one fruit interval resulted in the highest physical quality of seed based on 1,000 seeds weight (67.99 g). The adoption of transdisciplinary approaches to address complexity and uncertainty of the problems has been recommended to formulate the effective solution. Although scientists have been working towards the direction, there have been still little integration on policy and concerted implementation to deal particularly with cross-cutting issues on food security, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy and other green development issues. Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) has recently adopted the concept of transdisciplinary and sustainability sciences to better integrate and utilize available resources and management strategies as stated in IPB’s Long-term Plan and in recent policy to establish Center for Transdisciplinary and Sustainability Sciences (IPB-CTSS). The drivers for this policy are actually the already established research, academic and community service consortia in which students, scientists, practitioners and policy makers have been working interdisciplinary towards effective solution for achieving better impacts of IPB Tridharma activities. We will discuss the lessons learned, challenges and opportunities identified as solid foundation to implement the concept for enhancing the better impacts of universities extended obligatory tasks on education, research, community services, innovation and business.

The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) during the Boro season (2006-2007) at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahaman Agricultural University-Gazipur; Bangladesh Agricultural University-Mymensingh and Bangladesh Rural Development Academy, Bogra. Among the three introduced CMS lines, CMS-2 was highly responsive to environment (fertilizer dose) for yield due to the highest mean, considerable phenotypic index, regression coefficient greater than unity (bi > 1) and insignificant deviation from regression (S2di ? 0). CMS line CMS-1 showed regression coefficient near unity (bi ?1) and significant deviation from regression (S2di > 0) indicating stability for yield but its stability is unpredictable due to significant deviation from regression. CMS line Alok showed significant regression coefficient (bi >1) indicating highly responsive to fertilizer doses but significant deviation from regression made it unpredictable linear prediction. These results also explain that the production based on regression analysis for the genotypes differed considerably in respect to stability performances.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjpbg.v24i1.16998

Abstract:
This study empirically tests the benefit of the smallholders from organic farming in Bangladesh through their improved food security which is realised from their increased productivity and farm income. The respondent smallholders were picked up from two districts of Bangladesh namely Mymensingh and Bogra. The respondents (80) were the beneficiaries of the organic agriculture promotion project of Bangladesh Agricultural University. Three years data were collected by the project staff and were crosschecked with the base line. Findings of the study explored that before joining with the project extreme majority (93%) of the small farmers were involved in rice mono-culture and more than half (67%) of them were food deficit. The study also revealed that at the initial year of joining organic agriculture project their farm productivity was 10–12% lesser and it increased continually in the successive years. In some cases, it crossed the yield compared to conventional farming. The findings of the study showed that 100% of the farmers have followed crop diversification with high value vegetables and spices along with rice. Due to adoption of organic practices, the cost of production of the smallholders has declined from 27% to 36% and additionally they enjoy 10% to 15% premium prices which have enhanced their farm income significantly. The study shows that 62.5% of the smallholder farmers had attained household food security due to adoption of organic agriculture. Thus, adoption of organic agriculture effectively increased smallholders’ access to surplus safe food. However, the study also explored that farm size, extension media contact, access to assured market and access to institutional support are the most important factors in improving smallholders’ household food security through participation in organic agriculture programme. Thus, it can be concluded that organic agriculture can feed the smallholders in a better way.

Abstract:
The availability of nutrients in plants depends on the ability of plants to absorb nutrients from the soil. One of the processes absorbed by plants is by the presence of the transpiration process. Good transpiration will provide enough nutrients for plants which increase the productivity and quality of mangosteen. One of the quality standards of mangosteen fruit for export quality is the free from yellow sap contamination. It can be possible that transpiration can improve the quality of mangosteen fruit by applying fertilization. In this study Ca fertilization was carried out on mangosteen seeds, where this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of Ca uptake by mangosteen plants with the level of water loss by transpiration. This research was conducted in November 2016-March 2017 at the Leuwikopo Experimental Garden, Bogor Agricultural University. Morphological observations were carried out in its Experimental Garden and the Postharvest Laboratory whileanalysis of calcium content of plant tissue was done at the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, Bogor Agricultural University. Data obtained then were analyzed using ANOVA test. If the results were significant, Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) was then tested at 0.05 probability level. The results revealed that the transpiration rate of mangosteen plants from several treatments showed a significant difference, the transpiration rate was higher, especially in fertilized plants. The size of the 12th leaf, plants treated with fertilizer have a larger size than the treatment without fertilization. Fertilizing and providing enough water can maintain the growth of the plants.

Abstract:
DNA barcoding has become a useful tool for identifying and confirming of species within a known taxonomic framework. A large-scale effort is underway to barcode all amphibian species using the universally sequenced DNA region, a partial fragment of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI). This study was aimed to use DNA barcoding technique to identify and confirm species of Polypedates leucomystax and to analyze their phylogenetic relationship. Samples of Polypedates leucomystax were collected from Campus Area of Bogor Agricultural University. The cytochrome oxidase I gene of 600-700 nucleotides were amplified and observed in agarose gel electrophoresis. Forward sequence (604 base pairs) of COI gene was used for phylogenetic analyses. BLAST analysis against BOLD System database showed 95.75% identity with sequences of Polypedates leucomystax. The pairwise genetic distances of Polypedates leucomystax with Rhacophorus schlegelii, Limnonectes fujianensis, Fejervarya cancrivora, and Bufo melanostictus were 0.274, 0.352, 0.339, 0.339, 0.393, respectively. These results illustrated that the genetic identification is congruence with the morphological identification. Phylogenetic tree analysis showed that the samples were in one clade with other tree frogs. The DNA barcoding technique based on the sequence of COI gene can therefore be used to identify and confirm species of Polypedates leucomystax.

Abstract:
Tacca chantrieri is a perennial plant belongs to Taccaceae family that has the potential to be marketed as an ornamental plant due to its unique shape and dark color inflorescence. To date, very limited publication on T. chantrieri are available. The aim of this research was to examine plant growth pattern and flower phenology of T. chantrieri from West Borneo, Indonesia, and from Queensland, Australia in relation to their potential development as ornamental pot plants. The study was extended to examine T. chantrieri seed morphology with an inclusion of an accession from Thailand. The field experiment was conducted at the Leuwikopo experimental station in Darmaga, Bogor, Indonesia. Seed morphology examination was conducted at the Histology Laboratory of Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Bogor Agricultural University. T. chantrieri from West Borneo blooms six times a year whereas the Queensland accession twice a year. West Borneo accession had smaller bractea, fewer numbers of flowers per inflorescence and shorter flower stalk than Queensland accession. In addition, T. chantrieri Queensland grew faster than Borneo with the one leaf formed every two to three weeks, whereas it was at least four weeks in the Borneo accession. Both accessions were susceptible to leaf brown spot disease caused by Cercospora taccae. T. chantrieri Queensland seeds are oval dark brown, whereas West Borneo and Thailand accessions were shaped like kidneys (reniform) with a lighter brown color. This study demonstrated that there is great diversity in T. chantrieri including plant morphology, seed shape and color, which are important for species identification and for development of T. chantrieri as ornamental pot plant.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT

Papaya is one of the climacteric fruit that has a short shelf life. It has high potential as a source of vitamins and minerals. This research was aimed at studying the maturity criteria of postharvest ripeness of Callina papaya fruit of several picking ages and to determine the best picking ages for postharvest handling in order to extend the shelf life. Experiment was conducted in the Research Center for Tropical Horticulture, Bogor Agricultural University (PKHT, IPB) Papaya Farm Tajur, Bogor and postharvest ripening test was conducted at Postharvest Laboratory, Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, Bogor Agricultural University in February to July 2014. Experiment consisted of 4 treatments: 115, 120, 125 and 130 days after anthesis (DAA) with 3 replications. The longest shelf life for papaya Callina was obtained by fruit picked at 115 DAA (heat unit 2010.06 0C day) with the shelf life of 8 days. Picking ages 120 DAA (heat unit 2102.13 0C day) was the best picking ages for treatment to extend the shelf life because of the good chemical quality contained and its shelf life of 7 days. The older papaya fruits ripened faster than the younger papaya fruit. Younger papaya has a lower respiration rate than the older papaya. Picking ages did not affect the physical quality but affect the chemical quality of papaya fruit at the same postharvest maturity level.

Kata kunci: Callina, chemical quality, physical quality, shelf life

Abstract:
This study aimed to obtain information about the characteristics of 15 genotypes and to study a genetic similarity of each genotype that will be used for producing superior tomato varieties in lowlands. The research was conducted from March to August 2012 at the Experimental Field Leuwikopo Bogor Agricultural University, Darmaga Bogor. The experiment used The Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) using a single factor of genotype with three replications. Characterization and similarity analysis used the method of principal component analysis and cluster analysis. Based on principal component analysis and cluster analysis of tomato genotypes, it can be classified into three groups: group I (IPBT1, IPBT4, IPBT8, IPBT13, IPBT58, IPBT83 and IPBT84), Group II (IPBT3, IPBT23, IPBT30, IPBT33, IPBT34, IPBT53 and IPBT57) and group III (IPBT80). Characters with an influence on the genetic diversity of each component are the size of the cork layer between the scar stalk and the size of the center of the fruit in transverse slices. The genotypes with a high genetic similarity were IPBT1 and IPBT8, while IPBT30 with IPBT80 had a low genetic similarity

Abstract:
The objective of this experiment is studying the effect of physical scarification of nutmeg seed coat and germination media to accelerating germination rate and enhancing nutmeg seed viability. This experiment was conducted in December 2013 until May 2014 at Leuwikopo Experimental Field’s green house and Seed Laboratory of Agronomy and Horticulture Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Bogor Agricultural University. This experiment was using factorial randomize complete block design with 3 replications. The first factor was physical scarification on the seed coat with three levels: without scarification, one hole scarification on seed’s base, and two holes scarifications on seed’s base. The Second factor was the seed germination substrate that consist of sand, charcoal of husk rice, and mixture of sand and compost 1:1 (v/v). The results showed that two holes physical scarification could enhance germination process according to the earlier appearance of roots and shoot. Sand as the germinating substrate was observed as a better substrate according to the parameters of germinating potency and shoot height. Two holes physical scarification treatment which was sowed in sand substrate showed the increase of lateral root number into 6 lateral roots. Nutmeg seedling growth from sand substrate seedling showed a better growth than the charcoal of husk rice substrate seedling by evaluating these parameters on stem diameter, seedling’s height, amount of leaves, canopy’s width, and leaves colour.
