Abstract:
This chapter presents profiles on the authority of seven international organizations (IOs) in Europe. Each profile explains the coding scheme is applied to the IO by charting a path from the primary and secondary evidence to scoring judgments. They tell the reader how the assembly, executive, secretariat, consultative body, and dispute settlement of each IO are composed, what decisions each body makes, and how they make decisions. The profiles chart these developments annually since 1950. The authors indicate four kinds of uncertainty in superscript: α‎ for thin information; β‎ for a case that falls between the intervals on a dimension; γ‎ for disagreement among sources; δ‎ for inconsistency between written rules in the IO. Each profile is followed by tables summarizing the authors’ observations. Data and codebooks for the Measure of International Authority (MIA) are available on the authors’ websites.

Weaver, Michael F. Pain and Addiction in Adolescents and Young Adults (DRAFT). Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190265366.003.0030.

Abstract:
Distinguishing between the needs of adults and those of adolescents, this chapter concentrates on practical operational approaches to both addiction and pain in the ephebiatric population. The susceptibility of this group to substance use disorders, and the profound impact on the developing brain and body of substances of misuse, is complicated further by their high level of physical activity and vulnerability to trauma. Data are provided from the Monitoring the Future project to profile the substance use risk of this population; a summary table is included giving the prevalence of various substances of misuse among youths. Unique requirements in their treatment are addressed, with emphasis placed on a network therapy, enlistment of family cooperation, and neighborhood resources. Noting that this is a population for whom physicians may be reluctant to initially consider medication, safety profiles are examined.

Full text
Abstract:
Image-guided celiac plexus neurolysis can provide substantial and long-lasting pain relief in patients suffering from malignant pain from upper abdominal viscera. When performed by experienced hands, celiac plexus neurolysis also appears to be a relatively safe procedure with a limited side effect profile. Multiple imaging modalities are available for this procedure, though no single approach has systematically been proven superior in terms of efficacy or side effect profile. Each imaging guidance modality has advantages and disadvantages. Given the ability to visualize soft-tissue structures, CT guidance is recommended over fluoroscopy when intentionally transgressing into the retroperitoneum for celiac plexus neurolysis. It is also recommended in those patients with complicated anatomy, where anatomic distortion may complicate successful celiac blockade. However, in the patient without significant tumor burden involving the celiac axis and/or pancreatic body/tail, the fluoroscopy-guided retrocrural approach has been demonstrated to be efficacious, and complications are exceedingly rare.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter considers the practices, cultures, and institutional development of local government between the Municipal Corporations Act of 1835 and the Scottish and Welsh Local Government Acts of 1994. The chapter pays special attention to local government’s centrality to Victorian conceptions of the state and to the important role which Victorians assigned to local government in furthering ‘political education’ among an ever-growing body of parliamentary voters. The chapter goes on to contrast the vitality of Victorian and early twentieth-century local government with the declining profile of local government during the second half of the twentieth century.

Full text
Abstract:
Alexandra Finley adds crucial new dimensions to the boisterous debate over the relationship between slavery and capitalism by placing women's labor at the center of the antebellum slave trade, focusing particularly on slave traders' ability to profit from enslaved women's domestic, reproductive, and sexual labor. The slave market infiltrated every aspect of southern society, including the most personal spaces of the household, the body, and the self. Finley shows how women’s work was necessary to the functioning of the slave trade, and thus to the spread of slavery to the Lower South, the expansion of cotton production, and the profits accompanying both of these markets. Through the personal histories of four enslaved women, Finley explores the intangible costs of the slave market, moving beyond ledgers, bills of sales, and statements of profit and loss to consider the often incalculable but nevertheless invaluable place of women's emotional, sexual, and domestic labor in the economy. The details of these women's lives reveal the complex intersections of economy, race, and family at the heart of antebellum society.

Abstract:
Human happiness and well-being are, to a large extent, dependent upon the health of the individual. Similarly, healthy populations are an important prerequisite for societal progress and prosperity (Marmot et al., 2010; World Health Organization, 2015). In order to maximise individual and societal well-being, it is important that the health of all members and sections – that is, irrespective of age, sex/gender, disability, ethnicity, faith or any other protected characteristic – is maximised. A growing body of evidence, however, points to substantial, persistent differences in health outcomes between different ethnic and religious groups. In this chapter, we discuss the health profile of Muslims living in Scotland, outline some of the factors shaping health among this diverse group and consider ways of addressing the healthcare needs of Muslims within the context of Scottish healthcare services.

Gluckman, Sir Peter, Mark Hanson, Chong Yap Seng, and Anne Bardsley. Macronutrients and fibre requirements during pregnancy. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198722700.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter, the impact of varying intakes of protein, carbohydrate and lipids, which are the key nutrients that contribute to calorie intake, is examined. Fibre is also an important food component that needs to be considered. The maternal macronutrient profile can influence embryonic and fetal development. For instance, both low and excessively high protein intakes during pregnancy are associated with restricted growth, increased adiposity, and impaired glucose tolerance. High-fat maternal diets can significantly increase the susceptibility to diet-induced obesity and percentage total body fat in offspring, although types of fats need to be considered, as intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids is important for fetal development. The type and content of carbohydrate (high- vs low-glycaemic sources) in the maternal diet influences blood glucose concentration, which has a direct effect on fetal glucose levels and metabolism.

Abstract:
Chapter 1 introduces Aristotle’s infamous ethnographical comment in the Politics, which claims that the natural character traits a given tribe of people has, and the kind of natural political organization these traits give rise to, correlate with the environment and the region in which they live. Only those men whose natures are “well mixed” are to be selected as future citizens of ideal cities, since they are the “most easily led to virtue.” Subsequent sections analyze Aristotle’s biological discussions of natural character and show how the species-specific character profile a species of (human) animals has depends on the particular material mixture of their blood, and that by “well mixed” Aristotle has in mind blood that is hot, pure, and moist and that therefore gives rise to natural courage and intelligence. The chapter also shows how the various organs in the human body contribute to this “best” type of blood.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses recovering shape or structural information from SAXS data. Key to any such process is the ability to generate a calculated intensity from a model, and to compare this curve with the experimental one. Models for the particle scattering density can be approximated as pure homogenenous geometric shapes. More complex particle surfaces can be represented by spherical harmonics or by a set of close-packed beads. Sometimes structural information is known for components of a particle. Rigid body modeling attempts to rotate and translate structures relative to one another, such that the resulting scattering profile calculated from the model agrees with the experimental SAXS data. More advanced hybrid modelling procedures aim to incorporate as much structural information as is available, including modelling protein dynamics. Solutions may not always contain a homogeneous set of particles. A common case is the presence of two or more conformations of a single particle or a mixture of oligomeric species. The method of singular value decomposition can extract scattering for conformationally distinct species.
