Full text
Abstract:
This book examines the art and ritual of flagellant confraternities in Italy from the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries. Meeting regularly to beat themselves with whips, members of these confraternities concentrated on the suffering of Christ in the most extreme and committed way, and the images around them provided visual prompts of the Passion and the model suffering body. This study presents new findings related to a variety of artworks including altarpieces, banners, wall paintings, illuminated manuscripts, and paintings for the condemned, many from outside the Florence-Rome-Venice triangle.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter deals with an episode in The Book of Peace of the Mahābhārata in which a spiritually powerful yet protean almswoman, Sulabhā, encounters a King Janaka. It enquires into what Janaka’s declamation against Sulabhā says about masculinist ideas of gender, body, and normativity, and how her responses lay out considerations about gender—how her bodily appearance determines her reception, an account of being human that accepts but renders contingent the bodily marks of sex, an outline of spiritual transcendence that is deliberately universalistic, and a tantalizing glimpse of how she has worked with and through her gendered bodily presence to attain a socially significant emancipation from those normative limits. The framing within the story, which is sympathetic to her and leaves her unambiguously victorious, prompts certain considerations about the potential for this story about gendered experience to contribute to contemporary discussions about the role of gender in bodily identity.

Gentry, Caron E. The War on Women. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190901264.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter looks at how the War on Women is manifested in multiple vulnerabilities for women, namely economic, bodily, and reproductive health. The aim of this chapter is to demonstrate that the legal restrictions placed on women’s bodies and lives serves to police and limit women’s citizenship and contribution to America’s polis. A need to control women is an anxious response to women’s continued independence, which is seen as a threat to patriarchal structures. As such, the chapter turns to the language used by the National Coalition for Men, the Red Pill forum on Reddit, and Breitbart to describe women’s positions in US and international society, demonstrating the sexual objectification and violently paternalistic attitude toward women that helped promote the Trump campaign.

Abstract:
Biosensors and biosensing practices collect and share living data, data concerning changes in body states. Health biosensing emerges where devices, health experience, scientific and medical knowledges and online platforms meet around bodies. This book contrasts forms of health biosensing in significant life events ranging from conception to ageing. It explores practicalities, histories and promises of fertility and hormonal biosensing, stress biosensing, DNA genotyping platforms, and old-age biosensing. While the biosensing industries promote promise-horizons of the ‘soon’, ethnographic stories of failure and disappointment abound. ‘Living data’ may be about health for many people, but still happens mostly outside biomedicine or clinical practice. Yet biosensing has the potential to change human bodies and lives in barely imagined ways. This book argues for thinking about biosensing platforms and bodies together to understand that potential and to recognise harms and limitations.

Abstract:
This chapter delves deeper into the development and structural organization of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which forms the basis of the climate change regime. As a framework, the Convention urges action to preserve human safety where risks are high even in the face of scientific uncertainty. Its overarching aim, however, is not to reverse the greenhouse effect but rather, to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system. The Convention establishes a number of institutions to further its work: a Conference of the Parties (COP) that makes decisions necessary to promote the effective implementation of the Convention, a Permanent Secretariat, and two subsidiary bodies: the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI).

Abstract:
Chapter Five addresses how television advertising’s dancing bodies engage in the practice of theory, modeling concepts of subjectivity, authenticity, and performance. It examines how dance and choreographic form play a central role in advertising and create a philosophical locus that highlights advertising’s concepts of subjectivity and identity. The chapter argues that in advertising, the liveness, affect, and spectacle of the dancing body informs the construction of identity, directing viewers to see movement as a form of human agency. By highlighting the body’s ability to assume and discard style, dance-in-advertising promotes consumption-as-performance-of-identity. Ultimately, the author argues that dance in advertising models subjectivity and identity as fluid and relational.

Martin, Jeffrey J. Self-Determination Theory. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190638054.003.0019.

Full text
Abstract:
People with impairments often lack social connectedness, feel a lack of control, and struggle with regaining competence for various tasks after an acquired disability and rehabilitation challenges. Use of self-determination theory (SDT) and basic needs theory to examine these three needs appears particularly relevant for people with impairments and by extension to investigate if sport can help individuals meet their needs in each area. This chapter discusses the body of knowledge in disability sport using SDT. Research using SDT in disability sport appears more advanced than research examining other theories. For instance, researchers have tested theoretical propositions such as whether balancing the three areas of autonomy, competence, and relatedness helps promote optimal well-being or whether the absolute importance of meeting each need is more valuable. Research examining links between self-esteem, coping skills, anxiety, and SDT constructs has advanced the knowledge base in this area. Disability coaching research has used SDT to examine if autonomy-supportive coaching promotes well-being and better performance.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is a visionary illustration of the life-transforming soul-work of body of pro-womanists. Its purpose promotes writings by women and men of color having come together in solidarity as models of activist-consciousness. The contributors to this collection embody shades of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, culture, and nation-state affiliations centered in womanist “universal[ism].” Including writings by teachers/professors, students, and creative artists (poets as well as actors/directors)—they collectively exemplify an unwavering defense of human rights and social justice. Communicating the self-liberatory value of the meaning(s) of womanism in their writings, the contributors counter ideologies of separatism, domination, and systemic oppression. Collectively, they promote activist comradeship in resistance to wall-building ideas of exclusionism. In sum, this volume represents the unwavering commitment of individuals courageously willing to cross borders of personal, social, political, and spiritual difference(s) to create bridges for liberatory alliances.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores three Harlem-based productions of Greek dramas: Take Wing and Soar’s MEDEA (2008) and Pecong (2010), and the Classical Theatre of Harlem’s Trojan Women (2008). Drawing on the work of performance theorists like Harvey Young, Brenda Dixon Gottschild, Angela Pao, and Brandi Wilkins Catanese, it argues that these performances and their reception both illustrate and pose a challenge to implicit and explicit biases against African Americans. While each work aims to challenge cultural stereotypes of African Americans in distinct ways, their reception, in some cases, also illustrates the persistence of societal ideas of ‘the black body’, an idea of blackness that continues to be projected upon actual bodies. Despite these challenges, each work aims to promote an idea of a hybrid America, one that looks towards a hybrid future while acknowledging a segregated past of racial division that continues to deny opportunities to artists of colour.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines two competing forms of sovereign representation against the backdrop of the Whiskey Rebellion. In the new federal republic, George Washington served as a unifying symbol of the people in the centuries-long tradition of the monarch, but the very rituals of Washington’s office and also those of the rebels, such as tar-and-feathering, call attention to the first president’s limitations as symbol of the body politic. Rather than a static substance, the people are a protean force, a circumstance that prompts new forms of representation in Mason Locke Weems’s Life of Washington (1800), Hugh Henry Brackenridge’s Modern Chivalry (1797), and other works.
