Abstract:
Hong Kong has a long historical development of public housing and become one of the largest public housing programmes city in the world. However, the demand for housing of the low income young people is still not met. They cannot afford decent housing in the private market. Since Housing Authority (HA) introduced the Quota and Points System (QPS) in 2005 for single person applicants. The purpose of the scheme was to set an annual quota for non-elderly one-person applicants applying for public rental housing (PRH) and establish a points system to accord priority to applicants of higher age. The goal of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the existing housing subsidy policy for solving the housing problems of the young people in Hong Kong. First, I will investigate and define the housing problems of young people and trying to make some recommendations and suggestions to government. Therefore, a survey will be conducted through interview questionnaire to the young people in order to study their housing problems and general characteristics. By studying the housing problems of the lower income young people in Hong Kong and hope the findings of this research may provide insights for policy makers in tackling the young people's housing problems.

Kwan, Pun-lok David, and 關本樂. "Lexical blending among young Chinese readers." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2012. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B49617825.

Full text
Abstract:
Lexical compounding refers to the process of word formation through union of lexicalized morphemes. Given that young Chinese readers learn print vocabulary as unanalyzed whole, I am uncertain whether children can effortlessly decompose bound morphemes from disyllabic words for lexical compounding to occur. With this concern, I propose a lexical blending process in parallel with lexical compounding, where words are constructed from previously learnt words that have not yet been decomposed as morphemes. This thesis investigated the mechanisms behind the lexical blending process, as well as its role in word reading among young Chinese readers, in five studies Studies One and Two examined the factors that favor lexical blending to occur. In Study One, I located a high proportion of disyllabic words and bound morphemes within a corpus of Chinese textbooks in Hong Kong. Around 40-50% of disyllabic words in Grade One to Grade Three are composed of one or more bound morphemes, which set a favorable environment for lexical blending to occur. In Study Two, I found that younger readers tended to commit more selection errors, defined as “naming the target character as a character that forms a highly frequent two-character compound word with it” (Shu, Meng, Chen, Luan and Cao, 2005), than older readers during character reading, suggesting that their representations of bound morphemes were not precise. An experiment on morpheme name judgment demonstrated that bound morphemes and low frequency morphemes embedded in high frequency words were most prone to selection errors. I further examined the lexical blending process and its contribution to reading development in Studies Three and Four. Adopting a cross-sequential design in Study Three, I found that lexical blending concurrently and longitudinally predicted Chinese word reading, after lexical compounding and other reading-related variables were partialled out. In Study Four, I located lexical class and structural relation knowledge as significant component skills of lexical blending. The process of lexical blending proceeded first with structural arrangement of words, followed by morphological decomposition and union of morphemes to eventually form a blended word. I also tested Chinese dyslexic readers’ performance on lexical blending in Study Five. Dyslexic readers exhibited difficulties in lexical blending and all the related component skills, when compared with chronological-age (CA) matched controls. Process-wise, the dyslexic readers were weaker than CA controls in both structural arrangement and morphological decomposition, while having particular difficulties in the latter process. I conclude that lexical blending is an important word formation process for young Chinese readers. To aid mastery of lexical blending, readers should be aware of the syntax in phrases and sentences, as it provides cues on structural arrangement of blended words. In addition, I suggest explicit instruction on lexical blending skills in the curriculum, with a particular focus on morphological decomposition, in order to meet the learning needs of dyslexic readers.

Fu, Chun-him Henry, and 傅俊謙. "Outcomes of total knee replacement in young Chinese patients." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2012. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B48333840.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: This study aimed to assess the outcomes and implant survivorship in Chinese patients aged 55 years or younger. Methods: We reviewed our local joint replacement registry on a total of 102 knees from 68 Chinese patients aged 55 years or below at the time of surgery. All patients were operated on from January 2000 to July 2007. The mean followup was 8.3 years (range, 5 ? 12.5 years). We included patients with osteoarthritis (70 knees), rheumatoid arthritis (24 knees), hemophilia (4 knees), psoriatic arthropathy (1 knee), post?traumatic (1 knee) and tuberculosis (2 knees). All implants were cemented. 53 were posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) sacrificing, 47 were posterior stabilized implants and 1 was constrained implant. The preoperative and latest Knee Society Knee Scores, Knee Society Functional Score, knee range of motion and lower limb mechanical alignment on long film measurement were obtained. The postoperative occurrence of radiolucent lines, complications, revision operation and deaths were noted. Each knee was analyzed separately. Results: Mean Knee Society Knee Score improved from 41 (range: 13?79, SD 12.9) to 88 (range: 30?100, SD 13.3)(p <0.0001), while the mean Knee Society Functional Score improved from 41 (range: 0?80, SD 19.2) to 69 (range 0?100, SD 26.5 ) (p<0.0001). 70% achieved a postoperative coronal mechanical axis of within 3 from neutral alignment. Implant survivorship was 97% at 5 years and 85% at 10 years. 11 knees from 9 patients had complications requiring revision surgery. Aseptic loosening occurred in 10 knees of 8 patients. Among those with aseptic loosening, 3 knees from different patients had coexisting osteolysis. Heterotopic ossification occurred in 1 knee. There were no cases of infection. Rheumatoid arthritis patients when compared with osteoarthritis patients had a more valgus preoperative lower limb alignment (p<0.001), a lower mean preoperative KSFS (30 and 45 respectively, p=0.004) and a lower mean postoperative KSFS (53 and 74 respectively, p=0.006). There were no significant differences in mean improvement of KSFS, KSKS, radiological outcomes and implant survival. There were no statistically significant differences in clinical outcomes, radiological outcomes and implant survival between PCL sacrificing and PCL substituting implants. There were no statistically significant differences between the postoperatively neutrally aligned group and the outlying group in terms of clinical outcomes, radiological outcomes and implant survival. Conclusion: Total knee arthroplasty provides good clinical and functional outcomes in young Chinese comparable to those of international standards. Careful patient selection is crucial to avoid complications.

Hansson, Olov. "Gestaltningar av lidandets problem : En komparativ studie av William Paul Youngs Ödehuset och Jobs bok." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Teologiska institutionen, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-432435.

Full text
Abstract:
I denna uppsats analyseras två olika böcker.

Abstract:
In this dissertation I analyze different perceptions of young black inhabitants from M\'Boi Mirim\'s poor neighborhoods about their racial condition, and the way they associate those perceptions with other social markers, such as their living and social conditions. Based on a review of studies about youth, I frame the young blacks in the literature about the brazilian youth. I took the debate about social vulnerability and heterogeneity in the context of poverty to characterize the social conditions where the young blacks are inserted. I verify that perceptions and \"constructions\" about color acquire not only diverse frameworks throughout the youth\'s life paths, but also their urban trajectories interacts with different contexts.

Ho, Ka-yee Carey, and 何家怡. "Relations between dietary soy intake and premenstrual syndrome in young Chinese women." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2012. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B48423166.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a collection of physical and emotional symptoms that occurs related to women’s menstrual cycle. PMS usually occurs a few days before the onset of menstruation and relieved by the onset of menstruation. There are more than 200 reported symptoms and the most usual symptoms include abdominal bloating, back pain, breast pain, irritability, fatigue, depression and change in eating patterns. However, the cause of PMS is not clear, but a number of factors have been suggested including disturbances in hormones and neurotransmitters, dietary intake and life style. Besides medication to relieve the symptoms, there are alternative prevention methods including diet and lifestyle changes including regular exercise, adequate sleep, and healthy balanced diet. High soy product intake is one of the suggested alternative dietary therapies for PMS by reducing circulating estrogen. Prior studies have indicated that isoflavones can affect estrogen metabolism and influence ovarian cyclicity. Since PMS is common in Hong Kong, it causes significant burden on quality of life in economic and social aspects by affecting social activities, working, or health care use. Objectives: To investigate the association between dietary soy intake and premenstrual syndrome among young Chinese female Design: A cross-sectional analytical study Methods: The research was carried out in a sample of 242 young Chinese women (mean age 20.8±2.59 years) who are students at the University of Hong Kong in April 2012. Face-to-face survey was carried out in campus. Self-administered questionnaire was used to obtain demographic data. A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire with 20 food items was used to estimate the habitual dietary soy exposures. Moos Menstrual Distress Questionnaire was used to assess menstrual history and the PMS score. The study protocol received the approval of the Institutional Review Board of The University of Hong Kong/ Hospital Authority Hong Kong West Cluster. (UW 11-485) Results: 60% of participating women reported to have premenstrual syndrome. The mean score of total MDQ results at menstrual phase, premenstrual phase and postmenstrual phase were 378.5±70.05, 372.9±66.21, and 351.6±36.3 respectively. Soy intake was significantly negative correlated with MDQ scores in premenstrual phase (r=-0.191, p<0.05) and menstrual phase (r=-0.249, p<0.001). The beneficial effect of dietary soy was especially in pain, auto reaction and behavioral change (p<0.05). Adjusted for potential confounders, soy intake was independently associated with reduced PMS (B= -0.496, p<0.001) at premenstrual phase. Only 37% of those women with PMS would take medication or doctor consultation to relieve the symptoms. Over 78% of participating women were willing to try dietary therapy if it was reported to be helpful. Physical symptoms were the most commonly reported. Conclusions: Soy intake was associated with reduced PMS score, suggesting it may have beneficial effects on preventing or alleviating severity of PMS. Further prospective study and randomized controlled trials will be needed to demonstrate causality and clinical effectiveness.

Li, Wei Cathy, and 李薇. "Systematic review: risk factors of HIV/AIDS on young women in Africa." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2011. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B48424328.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: As many studies, women are more vulnerable to contract HIV through sex behavior than men from women. The low status of women also make women are more at risk of infecting with HIV. South Africa now is one of the most rapidly growing HIV epidemics in the world. In Africa, 74% of youth who get HIV/AIDS are young women and young girls. In 2005, there were 16.9 per cent women aged 15-24 years got HIV and only 4.4% men got HIV in South Africa. Objective: To identify the main internal risk factors and interventions/external factors of HIV/AIDS on young women in Africa. Data Source: Pub Med, Medline and Cochrane Library were searched for English articles from 1990 to 2011. (Keywords: HIV, AIDS, young women or girl or adolescent girl.) Results: Initial search produced 2888 articles. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 9 articles were for the final systematic review. 5 papers were about risk factors of HIV/AIDS and 4 papers were about the interventions or the factors influenced the risk factors. We identified four risk factors: intimate partner violence (IPV) and relationship power inequity, number of partners and last sexual activities, age of partner, alcohol consumption before sex. Two interventions/external factors: Microfinance with gender and HIV training curriculum and SES neighborhoods (Community level). Conclusions: We have two policy implications. First, we should ensure that preventive services, including education of young women have more accessibility. Secondly, because many young women who with older men have sex were more likely to infect with HIV, Therefore, we should make greater efforts to encourage them to adopt safer behavior. As the man play leading role in Africa, our prevention programs should focus more on men.

Chan, Sing-pui, and 陳聲珮. "A study of Hong Kong young children's early Chinese character writing development." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B50643265.

Full text
Abstract:
Due to a scarcity of research on young children’s Chinese character writing development and learning, there is insufficient empirical evidence to support the practices of helping young children learn to write in the context of Hong Kong. Grounded on the views about the nature of Chinese language and from the perspective of emergent literacy, this study looked into young children’s Chinese character writing forms under free writing conditions and focused attention on categorizing the forms and identifies the developmental patterns. In consideration of the purpose of study to pursue a better understanding about the field of study, this study used qualitative methods to research. The design adopted a strategy of multiple-case study, longitudinal approach and qualitative data collection methods. Data analysis employed an inductive and analytical approach incorporating some quantitative techniques to aggregate results in order to generate findings. The categorization of writing forms gave rise to a classification scheme based on aggregated time-order emergences of writing categories. Synthesis of the findings led to identifying the developmental patterns that was framed by a general progression of two-stage development. Under a pattern of gradual change in the two-stage development, variations of writing forms indicated patterns of variability in relation to the stroke, component, and character units of Chinese character, which encompass a range of linguistic features including stroke-order writing. These findings revealed child’s underlying knowledge in Chinese characters, which will be useful for the educational field. The findings contribute to a tentative theory of early Chinese character writing about children demonstrating a gradual progression in two stages embracing individual differences in forms and time of development in early Chinese character writing during the preschool years. Insights derived from the findings of this study enabled the author to discuss the relation of the unique nature and characteristics of Chinese character to children’s learning to write, and point to inadequacies of some current thinking and practices. The thesis ends with educational implications of orthographic-focused Chinese character writing instruction and research implications of the tentative framework of understanding.

Abstract:
Sire and family effects were evaluated for calf growth, udder and teat conformation, and reproduction traits in 2- to 4- yr-old cows from the McGregor Genomics Project. Cows were produced by embryo transfer (ET) and natural service (NS) from the same 4 F1 Nellore-Angus sires, and were analyzed separately. Sire of cow was significant for calf birth weight (P = 0.014) among ET cows, but not NS cows. Among NS families, calves from cows out of Brahman-Hereford dams were 2.0 kg heavier (P = 0.064) at birth than calves from cows out of Brahman-Angus dams. Sire of cow accounted for variation in weaning weight (P = 0.006) and preweaning ADG (P = 0.005) of calves from ET dams, but not NS dams. Family nested within sire also accounted for variation (P = 0.061) in weaning weights of calves from ET dams. Sire of cow was significant for average teat length in ET (P < 0.001) and NS (P = 0.013) cows. Sire of cow was significant for average teat diameter (P = 0.022) among NS cows. Sire of cow also affected udder support score (P = 0.002), cow disposition at calf birth (P = 0.002), and cow weight at weaning (P = 0.045) in ET cows. Family and cow age also accounted for variation in cow disposition at calf birth (P = 0.015, P = 0.041, respectively) and cow weight at weaning (P = 0.001, P < .001, respectively) among ET cows. Calf year of birth also affected (P < .001) cow weight at weaning among ET cows. For NS dams, calf year of birth (P = 0.012), cow age (P < .001), and parity nested within cow age (P = 0.005) affected cow weight at weaning. Although reproduction data were not formally analyzed, there appear to be substantial differences for calving rate and average calving date among these cow families. Data from this project will be used for identification of genetic markers for these cow productivity traits.
