Abstract:
SUMMARYSeveral private boarding schools in England have established universal influenza vaccination programmes for their pupils. We evaluated the impact of these programmes on the burden of respiratory illnesses in boarders. Between November 2013 and May 2014, age-specific respiratory disease incidence rates in boarders were compared between schools offering and not offering influenza vaccine to healthy boarders. We adjusted for age, sex, school size and week using negative binomial regression. Forty-three schools comprising 14 776 boarders participated. Almost all boarders (99%) were aged 11–17 years. Nineteen (44%) schools vaccinated healthy boarders against influenza, with a mean uptake of 48·5% (range 14·2–88·5%). Over the study period, 1468 respiratory illnesses were reported in boarders (5·66/1000 boarder-weeks); of these, 33 were influenza-like illnesses (ILIs, 0·26/1000 boarder-weeks) in vaccinating schools and 95 were ILIs (0·74/1000 boarder-weeks) in non-vaccinating schools. The impact of vaccinating healthy boarders was a 54% reduction in ILI in all boarders [rate ratio (RR) 0·46, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0·28–0·76]. Disease rates were also reduced for upper respiratory tract infections (RR 0·72, 95% CI 0·61–0·85) and chest infections (RR 0·18, 95% CI 0·09–0·36). These findings demonstrate a significant impact of influenza vaccination on ILI and other clinical endpoints in secondary-school boarders. Additional research is needed to investigate the impact of influenza vaccination in non-boarding secondary-school settings.

Abstract:
Impaired sleep is common in hospital. Despite this, little is known about sleep disturbance among older adults attending Emergency Departments (ED), particularly overnight-boarders, those admitted but housed overnight while awaiting a bed. Consecutive, medically-stable patients aged ≥70, admitted through a university hospital ED were evaluated for overnight sleep quality (Richards Campbell Sleep Questionnaire/RCSQ) and baseline sleep (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index/PSQI). Additional variables included frailty, functional and cognitive status, trolley location, time in ED and night-time noise levels. Over four-weeks, 152 patients, mean age 80 (± 6.8) years were included; 61% were male. Most (68%) were ED boarders (n = 104) and 43% were frail. The majority (72%) reported impaired sleep quality at baseline (PSQI ≥ 5) and 13% (20/152) had clinical insomnia. The median time spent in ED for boarders was 23 h (Interquartile ± 13). After adjusting for confounders, median RCSQ scores were significantly poorer for ED boarders compared with non-boarders: 22 (± 45) versus 71 (± 34), respectively, (p = 0.003). There was no significant difference in one-year mortality (p = 0.08) length of stay (LOS) (p = 0.84), 30-day (p = 0.73) or 90-day (p = 0.64) readmission rates between boarders and non-boarders. Sleep disturbance is highly prevalent among older adults admitted through ED. ED boarders experienced significantly poorer sleep, without this impacting upon mortality, LOS or re-admission rates.

Abstract:
Story-board or drawing as food for thought in the movie and advertising world. It is located on the border between writing and image. The job of story-boarder, which is constantly changing, is still not clearly defined in France : its techniques, its administartive filing. The purpose of this study is to take stock of the world of graphic arts of these specialists. Ethnomethodology and its axioms/precepts allow us to understand the story-board world of these drawers by fowsing on the subjectivity which is inherent in any research, without forgetting the scientific research's need to be objective. This blending occurs thanks to the immersion in this specific medium (i. E. Story-board). On the basis of share experience we attempt to thereby understand the principle of story-boards by reconstituting the story-boarders' experience (life story) which has shaped my interpretation of the story-board world (its practices, its indexicality, conveying this know-how) or this know-how-to-draw so to speak. We would like to offer you a perspective on the story-board world on the frontier between art and craftsmanship

Thorpe, Holly Aysha. "Boarders, Babes and Bad-Asses: Theories of a Female Physical Youth Culture." The University of Waikato, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10289/2576.

Abstract:
Young women occupy unprecedented space in contemporary society. Their professional ambitions, educational achievements, practices of cultural consumption, and participation in sport and leisure all offer evidence of a new position for young women. This thesis analyzes female snowboarders as exemplars of young women in contemporary society and popular physical culture. Many young women today play sport and engage in physical activity with a sense of enthusiasm and entitlement unknown to most of their mothers and grandmothers. Against this background the female snowboarder is an excellent barometer of the nature of contemporary youth and popular culture, of the changes in those cultures including the development of niche female cultural industries, and of the emerging opportunities available to middle-class women in Western society. Women's snowboarding, however, is a complicated and multidimensional phenomenon interwoven with numerous political, cultural, social and economic events and processes. In this thesis I set out to capture the complexity of female snowboarding by systematically contextualizing and interrogating the lived experiences of female boarders through drawing upon six critical social theoretical perspectives: Marxist political economy, post-Fordism, feminism, hegemonic masculinity, Pierre Bourdieu's theory of embodiment, and Foucauldian theorizing. In applying these theories, I select key concepts and engage them in conversations with my insider cultural knowledge of snowboarding, numerous periods of fieldwork, and an extensive base of artifacts and sources collected over five years. In this thesis I extend academic understandings of female youth culture via the case study of women in snowboarding, and offer a valuable critique of contemporary social theories used to explain many different social phenomena that involve tensions and power relationships between the genders. While no single theory or concept proved adequate to deal with the multidimensional phenomenon of the female boarder, each having its shortcomings and offering quite different insights, several reveal important commonalities in relation to some key concepts in critical sociology, viz, structure, agency, culture, the body and embodiment, gender and power. These commonalities, I argue, offer future directions for theorizing about, and advancing our understanding of, young women in popular physical culture.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to examine how the social/cultural, legal, economic, political and technological environment in international markets affects a firm’s standardization and adaptation of the marketing mix. This study investigates Getinge ABs actions on the German and the Chinese market. The aim is to see how the company has been forced to adapt the marketing mix in order to penetrate these markets. The study is based on a theoretical framework that includes relevant theories regarding the standardization and adaptation of the marketing mix, and the environmental influences that a firm has to take into consideration. The research has been performed on a Swedish company that provides medical equipment for institutions – Getinge AB. A qualitative personal interview has been carried out with the Vice president of sales and services of Getinge AB and the managing director of the area of infection control – Harald Castler.

This study has shown that the environmental factors on the Chinese market have affected the adaptation of the product, price and promotion. The distribution channels have on the other hand only been affected by the social/cultural conditions. On the German market product adaptation has been influenced by the social/cultural, legal, economic and political conditions. Only the social/cultural, legal and economic conditions have affected the price adaptation. Further, the adaptation of the promotion has only been affected by the social/cultural and political conditions. Finally the distribution channels on the German market have been affected by the social/cultural, legal and political conditions.

The results have also shown that it has been a challenge for Getinge AB to find a balance between the degree of standardization and local adaptation of the different elements in the marketing mix – a challenge that they have succeeded to deal with. Further more the study shows the importance of adapting the marketing mix to the local situation since it is the key to manage to design offers that will lead to success and increased market shares. The overall conclusion of this study is that Getinge AB needs to think globally, but act locally and take environmental influences such as the social/cultural, legal, economic, political and technological ones, into consideration.

Abstract:
The number of displaced people around the world today is unprecedented in world history, with a third of those displaced below the age of 18. These children often undergo traumatic experiences which can cause serious mental health issues before and during their flight as well as afterwards when resettling in a new country. In Sweden, they are offered psychological aid in order to better deal with these issues and hence recover. However, due to the cultural stigma attached to mental health problems, psychosocial aid is often ruled out by the child themselves. In addition, up to 30% of these unaccompanied children have been reported to suffer from PTSD, where merely speaking about one's issue can trigger a relapse of the trauma. There is therefore a shortage of pragmatic approaches to help tackle the challenges that these children faces. The aim of this thesis is to investigate how creative programs such as the organisation Clowns without Borders works with unaccompanied refugees and how their methods affect the wellbeing of these children. This thesis explores the effects that laughter and playing has on a child’s well-being using a qualitative field research approach. The research is a contribution to the field of development since it offers new grounds on how to work towards increasing the living standards of resettled displaced persons.

The admission of male workers in daycares - female territory - has not gone unnoticed: although these are public institutions, informal talks and meetings with parents supported the decision of female managers to introduce changes in day-to-day life, for example, removing male workers from activities related to the children s body care. That fact inspired this work, whose general objetive is to understand the foundations underpinning the order sex/gender, analyzing the difficulties to overcome them. The historical process(es) of institutional gender relation, with emphasis on masculinity building processes, is the privileged objetc of study in to achieve this desideratum, The qualitative research resulted in visits to twenty-two daycares from different Regional Education Coordination of Rio de Janeiro and nineteen people were interwied, among educators, parents and members of the preschool community. With the contribution of the discourse analysis, groundes in the work of Michel Foucault, the collected data is analysed, considering also the author s legacy in reflecting on the power relations established in the field of childhood education. The concept of territory is discussed, mainly, based on the works of Claude Reffestin, Milton Santos and Rogério Haesbaert. From the developed analyzes it is possible to conclude that the resistante to these daring men, who accepted activities that are socially recognized as feminine, among other things, indicate a contraditory defense of heteronormativity: in one hand, it is ratified the rigid demarcation of human experiences based on a genre duality, in a context that enhances the changes of patterns that allow, for example, the massive insetion of women in different public spaces spheres.

Abstract:
The textbook is one of the most available and used resources for teaching English. Analyzing its roles in the process of teaching and learning is essential for the contribution of the material use in the success of this process. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to understand the use of the textbook made by the teachers in practice, verifying if the material is adapted in some way and the changes made. With the intention of mapping the predominant topics in researches about textbooks, we analyzed Qualis A1 and A2 national publications in Languages/Linguistics Brazilian academic journals and international publications using the search tool of Portal de Periódicos CAPES/MEC website. We also analyzed the contents related to the use of textbooks in methodology books for teaching English. A research on possible adaptations to the textbook was carried out taking the ideas of Greenwood (1987), Graves (2003), Harmer (2001), McDonough e Shaw (1993), Nunan (1991) e Ur (1996) as a starting point. The methodological procedures for data generation were classroom observations and interviews with the teachers. For the observations, seven groups of the Languages without Boarders-English Program were selected. The same teachers who were observed were also interviewed in order to get to know their opinion about the use of textbooks to teach English. The data generated from the observations were analyzed based on the possible adaptations to the material. Through the analysis it was possible to perceive, among other aspects, that: the teachers frequently adapt the textbook and in a diverse way; the textbook has a central role in the choice of contents and types of tasks, even when the teacher complements the book bringing extra material; and most of the classroom time is dedicated to the use of the material. In the interviews, the teachers stated that they consider the textbook as a guide, and affirmed that they use the teacher’s book very little, which was confirmed in the observations. This research aims at contributing to expand empiric studies about the use of textbooks, thus helping teachers reflect on their practices and consciously use the material, adapting it to the context where it is/will be used and prioritizing their students’ interests and needs.

Abstract:
Fabrication of plastic parts is an important scope of application for various branches of industry. This does not only concern manufacturing of end products but also production of sample parts in small lot sizes. Currently, most plastic parts are injection-molded. Consequently, it is first necessary to produce appropiate moldings, for example by milling of metal. This is very time-consuming on one hand and uneconomical concerning costs for production in small lot sizes on the other hand. Furthermore, the variety of forms is restricted considerably which is a clear disadvantage concerning the production of prototypes or spare parts. The use of a free-forming droplet generator for producing plastic parts can provide remedy. The patented principle of the printing process used in this approach is to produce droplets of liquified plastic in a preparation unit. Sequential discharge of these droplets builds a part in the installation space by solidifying of the droplets into balls. Since each 3D printing process needs its own data preprocessing, this article presents its fundamentals. STL data is used as input data and allows almost any kind of geometry. In general, a typical workflow for processing STL data is as follows: slicing volume data in order to gain contours that form 2D boarders, offsetting contours for a true to scale building process, filling of slices dependent on (offset) contours and generation of machine-code (g-code) that can be executed by the 3D printer in order to build an accurate and high-quality part. The model used in this approach is based on the droplets produced by the machine. A more detailed description of all the process-specific invidual steps from slicing up to g-code generation is presented within the scope of this paper. The continual development of custom-made algorithms based on process-specific models and parameters has resulted in the generation of g-code that could be executed on a 3D plastic polymer printer based on droplet generation for the first time. The resulting sample parts are very appealing. In conclusion, the results have shown that the whole production process can be a significant benefit especially for rapid prototyping of sample parts or spare parts.

Abstract:
Framatome ANP develops a new boiling water reactor called SWR 1000. For the case of a hypothetical core melt accident it is designed in such a way that the core melt is retained in the Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) at low pressure owing to cooling of the RPV exterior and high reliable depressurization devices. Framatome ANP performs — in co-operation with VTT — tests to quantify the safety margins of the exterior cooling concept for the SWR 1000, for determining the limits to avoid the critical heat fluxes (CHFs). The three step procedure has been set up to investigate the phenomenon: 1. Water-air study for a 1:10 scaled global model, with the aim to investigate the global flow conditions. 2. Water-air study for a 1:10 scaled, 10% sector model, with the aim to find a flow sector with almost similar flow conditions as in the global model. 3. Final CHF experiments for a 1:1-scaled, 10% sector., the boarders of this model have been selected based on the first two steps. The instrumentation for the water/air experiments included velocity profiles, the vertically averaged average void fraction and void fraction profiles in selected positions. The experimental results from the air-water experiments have been analyzed at VTT using the Fluent-4.5.2 code with its Eulerian multiphase flow modeling capability. The aim of the calculations was to learn how to model complex two-phase flow conditions. The structural mesh required by Fluent-4 is a strong limitation in the complex geometry, but modeling of the 1/4 sector from the facility was possible, when the GAMBIT pre-processor was used for the mesh generation. The experiments were analyzed with the 150 × 150 × 18 grid for the geometry. In the analysis the fluid viscosity was the main dials for adjusting the vertical liquid velocity profiles and the bubble diameter for adjusting the phase separation. The viscosity ranged between 1 to 10000 times the molecular viscosity, and bubble diameter between 3 to 100 mm, when the calculation results were adjusted for a good agreement with the experimental data. The analysis results were very valuable for designing the final water/steam facility for final CHF tests. The validation against data from the air-water experiments proved that the present CFD codes approach to the state where they can be used for simulating such two-phase experiments, where the fraction of both phases is essential and the flow is strongly affected by the density differences. It is still too early to predict, if the CFD calculation of the 1:1 scale critical heat flux experiments is successful, could the result be used for formulating a new type of a critical heat flux correlation, where the effects of CRD’s on the flow patterns and gap dimensions are model parameters.
