Abstract:
The aim of the experiment was to evaluate the impact of selenium supplementation on white blood cell parameters in the blood of ewes. The total white blood cell (WBC) and differentiation of leukocytes in blood smear were detected by a microscopic analysis, and the CD4+ and CD8+ subsets were detected by flow cytometry. A decrease in the count of WBC was recorded during pregnancy; it was statistically significant only in the group supplemented with organic selenium. In the postpartal period there was a statistically significant increase in the percentages of CD4+ and CD8+ subsets but differences between the groups were not statistically significant. The results of the experiment documented that the supplementation of different forms of selenium did not markedly influence the dynamics of blood parameters in non-pregnant, pregnant and lactating ewes if the intake of vitamins and other essential microelements was adequate.

Abstract:
Among the Luo of Kenya, blood carries potencies that make life. The common saying ‘blood follows blood’ embodies this flow of potencies between different entities (human and non-human) that creates life and changes life-courses. The materiality of blood is agentive here, in the sense that it produces diverse human conditions. Examples are given specifically from life-cycle rituals, prayers, and healing practices of a Luo community in western Kenya. Ultimately, the sentient agency of blood defines the essence and dimensions of life in this case. Our focus on the conditions and processes that make life is contrasted with culturalist approaches, which misrecognize life plurality.

Abstract:
Arguably, caffeine is the world’s leading drug of choice. It is estimated that in the U.S. and Europe at least ninety per cent of the adult populations consume caffeine-containing beverages several times each day. It is also known that consumers prefer their hot coffee to be in the range of 45-60°C (i.e. as hot as 140°F). If such a drink is spilled on the exposed skin it can cause full-thickness, third degree burns within 5 seconds. These are the kinds of burns that produce permanent damage and scarring for life. The prudence of consuming hot coffee and other hot drinks at such temperatures is questionable, especially when children and adolescents are involved.

Abstract:
Blood donation is a vital part of worldwide healthcare. It relates to blood transfusion as a life-sustaining and life-saving procedure as well as a form of therapeutic phlebotomy as a primary medical intervention. Over one hundred million units of blood are donated each year throughout the world. Blood transfusion from one person to another is a special procedure used by doctors in medical procedures that involve patients with the need of blood. The only authorized person that can allow a blood transfusion is if he or she is a healthcare provider (Getting a Blood Transfusion). The procedure of course cannot be done by anyone that does not have possession of a medical degree where they are permitted legally to prescribe or give a blood transfusion to a patient. Blood transfusions are used for serious injuries, surgery, and when a person can’t make enough blood. Doctors use blood transfusions for surgeries where a patient could eventually lose blood during the medical procedure.

Abstract:
Background: Many blood grouping systems and blood group antigens have been described in the available literature. ABO and Rh grouping systems are the most prevalent amongst these. The prevalence of these varies between different regions and races. The present study was conducted at a District hospital blood centre, to study the frequency and; age and sex distribution of ABO and Rh groups in the study population, in the North District of Goa, to help in managing the blood bank inventory and serve patients better. Methods: The study population included 5438 blood donors (voluntary and replacement). Blood groups were determined by conventional test tube agglutination methods – forward and reverse grouping, using standard antisera. Data obtained from the blood centre records was reported as numbers and percentages, and findings were compared with the available literature. Results: Blood group O was the most prevalent in our study population, followed by A, B and AB. Rh positivity was seen in 93.6% blood donors. Rest all donors were Rh negative. Majority donors belonged to the age group 31-40 years, followed by 21-30 years, with majority (88%) being males. 97% donors were voluntary and 3% were replacement donors. Conclusion: O Positive was the commonest blood group in our study population and AB negative was the least common. Keywords: blood donors, voluntary, replacement, blood groups, ABO group, Rh group, distribution, age, gender.

Abstract:
Aims: The demand for blood and blood products in sub-Saharan Africa is occasioned by tropical infectious diseases and obstetric complications that cause anemia. We therefore need a well-organized blood transfusion service with sufficient resources to process blood and blood products, especially in the Western Kenya, where co-infections of tropical diseases are rampant. This study was aimed at determining the blood deficiency and challenges experienced by Eldoret Regional Blood Transfusion Center (ERBTC). Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive design was used to conduct the study. All the ERBTC staffs, donor records, and blood requisition and dispatch registers were studied. Self-administered questionnaires and data collection abstraction forms were used to collect data. The extracted data from ERBTC registers included those on demand and supply mismatches and blood discards. The obtained data were entered into Microsoft Excel and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: A total of 16 staffs, 230 donor records, and 9612 units of requested blood were reviewed. The ERBTC reported many challenges ranging from understaffing, limited funding, insufficient equipment, and irregular reagents and other laboratory supplies. During the study period, the blood bank only managed to supply 4740 units of blood against a demand of 9612 units, thus occasioning a 50.7% deficit. A discard rate of 7.8% after the screening was also reported due to insufficient volumes after collection and transfusion transmissible infections. However, there were no wastages during the study period. Conclusion: The main challenges experienced by ERBTC were understaffing, insufficient funding, limited equipment, frequent reagent outages, and discards of unsuitable blood, resulting in very high deficits. We recommend hiring staff, increased funding, acquiring modern equipment and reagents, and recruiting known regular blood donors to alleviate frequent shortage.

Abstract:
Blood Pressure Self-Measurement (BPSM) has gained interest lately and its practice can contribute to the diagnosis and follow-up of arterial hypertension. In Brazil, due to difficulties in carrying out Home Blood Pressure Monitoring (HBPM) and the unavailability of Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) in most facilities, AMPA, which differs from the aforementioned methods, has widespread use in our country. Therefore, it seems important to discuss this method, which is largely used and poorly studied. In this paper, we will describe the methods for measuring blood pressure, auscultatory and oscillometric, in addition to listing the advantages and disadvantages of measuring blood pressure in the office, comparing them with AMPA. We will also make an alert about the need for the patient to receive guidance on blood pressure measurement and, finally, we will cite the Brazilian and European Guidelines regarding the mention they make about this method.

Abstract:
The present study included 101 patients with Ca cutis (76 men and 25 women). The patients’ blood group affiliation to the AB0 and Rhesus factor systems was monitored. There was a statistically significant increase in the disease in patients with 0 blood group (p <0.05) and a slight increase in the patients with AB blood group, when compared with the control group of healthy people. The incidence of the condition is reported in the other groups with varying degrees of decrease, which was significant in group A (p <0.05). It has been found that the disease is much more common in our country compared to its levels in Europe (65,1 / 100000 in men and 52,4 / 100000 in women compared to 18,2 / 100000 in men and 8,3 / 100000 in women respectively). No significant differences were observed in the Rhesus factor system compared to the control group.
