Abstract:
AbstractMock white girl(MWG) performances parody a linguistic and embodied style associated with contemporary middle class white girls in the United States. The article identifies bundles of semiotic resources in the stylization of the white girl persona—for example, creaky voice, uptalk, blondeness, and Starbucks—in three genres of MWG:Savior,Shit white girls say, andTeenage girl problems. While semiotic variables used to index the white girl persona are consistent across performances, there is significant variation in performers’ ideological stances relative to the mocked figure of personhood: white girls in the US are not ‘heard’ in any one way by all social actors. Contextualizing MWG performances through analysis of stance reveals critical variation in how the white girl is interpreted, evaluated, and produced as a meaningful social entity by diverse segments of the population. Abstract:
I present a case study of the use of a table-top role-playing game in a mid-level course that presupposes no previous familiarity with philosophy. The course covered philosophical analyses of propaganda and language, and the pedagogical purpose of the game was to help students grasp the basics of philosophical and linguistic theories of assertion quickly. The game, Sign, directs players to create a signed language collaboratively, and thus forces them to pay attention to the subtle ways in which communication occurs.

Full text
Abstract:
Rigler’s sign was first described in 1941 by L G Rigler as a new radiological sign for recognising free air in the peritoneal cavity on supine radiograph. The presence of pneumoperitoneum allows free intraperitoneal air to be contrasted with intraluminal gas, accentuating the wall of gas-containing viscera. It is observed in infants and very ill patients where only limited radiographs of the abdomen are possible. The football sign was first described by R E Miller in the 1960s. Seen on supine abdominal radiographs, this describes an oval radiolucency resembling an American football. It is important for the radiologist to recognise the supporting signs of pneumoperitoneum, such as Rigler’s sign and the football sign, on supine abdominal radiographs, especially in neonates and infants, where erect chest/abdominal radiographs are not always possible.

This essay has a five-fold purpose: (1) To define the term 'sign' and its referents; (2) to comment on semiosis and representation; (3) to discuss visual signs; (4) to use selectively traffic signs (regulatory, warning) to exemplify how these metal objects placed on highways provide motorists with visual guidance on traffic rules and traffic advisories; and (5) to show how traffic signs constitute a silent visual expression of Searle's directive and representative (assertive) illocutionary acts.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Bilateral medial medullary infarction is a rare stroke syndrome. The common symptoms are quadriparesis, dysarthria and hypoglossal palsy. However, the early diagnosis of bilateral medial medullary infarction may be difficult as it may mimic other conditions like Guillain Barre syndrome and brainstem encephalitis. With the advent of magnetic resonance imaging, it can be easily diagnosed, as the diffusion weighted sequences demonstrate hyperintensity involving bilateral medulla in a heart shaped pattern, described as the “Heart sign”. We hereby report a patient who presented with progressive quadriparesis, and dysarthria, progressing to respiratory failure, whose MRI brain showed the characteristic “heart sign” on diffusion sequences and was diagnosed to have bilateral medial medullary infarction.
