Abstract:

Abstract:
This experiment examined whether a female applicant's hair color and use of cosmetics might affect perceptions of her ability for a professional position. One hundred thirty six college students reviewed the identical professional resume of a female applicant for the position of a staff accountant. Attached to the resume was a photograph of the stimulus female applicant either wearing or not wearing cosmetics and depicted with brunette, red, or blonde hair color. The results demonstrated significant main effects of both hair color and cosmetic use. Specifically, the applicant was rated more capable and was assigned a higher salary both when depicted with brunette hair color and when depicted without cosmetics. There were no interactions between hair color and cosmetic use. The findings demonstrate that biases regarding personal appearance may affect judgments about a female applicant's ability.

Abstract:
A review of the literature suggests that hair color influences the quality of interpersonal interactions. In a factorially designed study, two male and two female confederates (Cs) encountered 72 male and 72 female street pedestrians (Ss) asking for help. Cs wore brunette wigs for half of their interactions and blonde wigs for the rest. Results showed that while women helped Cs equally regardless of their gender, men helped women more than they helped men. Hair color of Cs was not shown to affect helping behavior. The findings are discussed in the context of other studies and limitations are outlined.

Abstract:
Blonde hair is a potent and highly visible sign in western culture. Although the popularity and desirability of blonde hair in the West is well documented, since the 1950s, blonde hair has also generated many negative associations and these have contributed to myths around blondeness. In particular, women who dye their hair blonde find themselves in a paradoxical position; they simultaneously evoke desire and derision. This thesis uses the model of feminine masquerade outlined by Joan Riviere (1929) as a locus for discussing the transgressive potential of the knowing use of blondeness as a sign. When women wear blondeness in this way they embrace it as an oblique means to access privilege. This self-reflexivity allows women to enter sites of power that they are otherwise excluded from. Drawing on ideas of the carnivalesque, as described by Mikhail Bakhtin (1968), this thesis also proposes that the carnivalesque is employed by women in order to transgress patriarchal boundaries through an ironic masquerade of the archetypal blonde. These paradoxical meanings of blondeness are evoked in the work of performance artist Vanessa Beecroft. Beecroft stages both the reflexive awareness of today's blonde woman and the way in which she is shaped by socio-cultural forces beyond her control. Through reference to Beecroft's art, this dissertation builds upon the optimism and transgressive potential of Bakhtin's 'carnival' and Riviere's 'feminine masquerade' to re-present the identity/position of blonde women as one of agency and power.

Spengane, Zandile Namhla Elizabeth. "Blood and virus detection on barber hair clippers." Master's thesis, Faculty of Health Sciences, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/30855.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Bleeding from the popular clean-shave ‘chiskop’ haircut was recently reported as prevalent in South Africa (SA), a country with 6.9 million HIV-infected people. Objectives. To investigate the prevalence of barber hair clipper contamination with blood and HIV and hepatitis B viruses. Methods: Fifty barbers from three townships in Cape Town, SA, were invited to participate. One clipper from each barber was collected immediately after it had been used for a cleanshave haircut. Each clipper was rinsed with phosphate-buffered saline and then submerged in viral medium. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to identify the bloodspecific RNA marker haemoglobin beta (HBB), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HIV. Results: The clean-shave haircut was the most common haircut requested by clients (78%). Of the clippers collected, 42% were positive for HBB, confirming detection of blood, none were positive for HIV, and 4 (8%) were positive for HBV. Two clippers (clippers 16 and 20) were positive on qualitative HBV PCR. HBV DNA from clipper 16 clustered with genotype A sequences from SA, India, Brazil and Martinique, while clipper 20 clustered with SA genotype D sequences. The clipper 20 sequence was identical to a subtype D sequence (GenBank accession AY233291) from Gauteng, SA. Conclusion: This study confirms that there is significant contamination of barber hair clippers with blood and blood-borne viruses. Hepatitis B was detected with enough DNA copies to pose a risk of transmitting infection. Although HIV was not detected in this small study, the risk of transmission should be quantified. Further studies to investigate barber clipper sterilization practices and whether the clean-shave hairstyle is an independent risk factor for HIV, HBV and hepatitis C virus infections are warranted. Public education on individual clipper ownership (as is the case with a toothbrush) should be advocated for clean-shave and blade-fade haircuts.

Andrews, Rebecca. "Analysis of cannabinoids in post-mortem blood and hair : its value in post-mortem toxicology." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/18786.

Full text
Abstract:
The work presented in this thesis describes the development of methods for the analysis of cannabinoids in post-mortem blood samples and hair specimens from cannabis users. It investigates the value of measuring post-mortem blood cannabinoid concentrations and potential value of analysis for cannabinoids in hair for post-mortem toxicology. The development and validation of a method for analysis of cannabinioids in post-mortem blood is described. The method involved liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) of the cannabinoids ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), cannabinol (CBN) and metabolites 11-hydroxy-∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol (11-OH-THC) and 11-nor-∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid (THC-COOH) from post-mortem blood followed by analysis by two dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (2D GC-MS). The developed method was applied to post-mortem blood samples submitted by Her Majesty’s (HM) Coroners from fatal road traffic collisions (RTCs) and other routine case types (control group). The prevalence of cannabinoids in the RTC and control group was similar (21% of the RTC group and 26% of the control group were positive for at least one cannabinoid), however, 90% of the cannabinoid positive RTCs had detectable THC (the psychoactive component of cannabis), compared to 60% of the cannabinoid positive control cases. It was demonstrated that it is feasible to indicate possible impairment due to cannabis use in fatal RTCs when the concentration of THC detected is higher than those usually observed in other routine HM Coroners’ cases. A method was developed for analysis of THC, CBD, CBN and THC-COOH from hair. The method involved LLE combined with solid phase extraction (SPE) from hair followed by analysis by 2D GC-MS and standard GC-MS. The developed method was applied to 31 authentic hair specimens from regular cannabis users. The method was suitable for detecting exposure (by detection of THC, CBD and CBN) in weekly users but may only prove ingestion in daily users (by detection of THC-COOH).

Abstract:
In follicle sinus complex of sinus hairs, two blood vessels seem to have a prominent function. Up to date, their biological role is unknown, however, hypothesis suggest that they are used as hydraulical bearing for the hair which is used to change the stiffness and compliance of the fixation depending on the application. Because of the size of the structures of interest experiments at the living object to clarify the biological role are not possible so far. Therefore, mechatronic approaches can help to investigate advantages and possibilities of a bearing with tunable compliance. Thus, in the current thesis, it is develop a mathematical modeling, multi-body simulation and a mechatronic demonstrator of a swinging rod in a bearing with tunable compliance. The tunable compliance of the system was inspired of Jack Spring principle of work, which change the compliance by decreasing the number of active coils.

Abstract:
In the last few years, the prevalence of legal party pills in New Zealand has risen dramatically. These pills contain new piperazine designer drugs, two of the more common being 1-benzylpiperazine (BZP) and m-trifluoromethylphenylpiperazine (TFMPP). This thesis describes an optimised LC-MS/MS method for the detection of BZP and TFMPP in whole blood, using an automated solid phase extraction (SPE) for sample clean-up. The method was validated on three different days using five replicate samples each day. The standard curve was linear from 7 - 7000 ng/mL for BZP and 10 - 10,000 ng/mL for TFMPP, with coefficients of variation (CV) below 10%, and accuracy greater than 90% for both drugs. The method was used to quantitate samples provided by the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand. Blood levels were used to show concentrations in the blood over time, and relate these to performance of subjects on a driving simulator. The study was stopped after 41% of the participants who received BZP and TFMPP had adverse reactions to the pills, including vomiting and migraines. The LC-MS/MS method was also used to detect and quantitate methamphetamine, amphetamine, methylenedioxymethamphetamine, methylenedioxyamphetamine, morphine, codeine and 6-monoacetylmorphine in hair. The drugs were extracted from 20 mg of hair using hydrochloric acid in a water bath overnight, then purified using SPE. Validation on three days with five replicate samples gave coefficients of variation (CV) below 12% and acceptable accuracy for all drugs. The method was tested on three samples, previously reported by Environmental Science and Research (ESR) using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) giving results in good agreement. This thesis describes a sensitive, accurate, reproducible LC-MS/MS method easily adapted to analyse drugs of abuse in different biological matrices. It demonstrates the versatility of LC-MS/MS and its applications in forensic work.

In 1932, Cary Grant had his first major role in a high profile film, working with the famed star-director team Josef von Sternberg and Marlene Dietrich in Blonde Venus (1932). Chapter 7 explores the making of this classic film, and Cary Grant’s discomfort working alongside these two very temperamental personalities. It considers the crucial element that von Sternberg brought to Cary Grant’s image: his razor sharp hair parting. It also offers accounts of the making of Hot Saturday (1932) and Madame Butterfly (1932), and, in the process, the slow but steady improvement in Grant’s acting and on-screen presence.

The study of macro-and microelements in the blood and hair was carried out in 91 patients with ischemic stroke and 24 practically healthy persons, the results of which were taken as normal. It was found that in the blood of patients with ischemic stroke, the concentrations of magnesium, iron, copper, lithium, and aluminum are reduced, and a decrease in the levels of calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, and zinc in the hair was revealed. It has been shown that calcium, magnesium, zinc, and iron in hair have high diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and efficiency (more than 60%) in ischemic stroke and they can be used as additional informative chemical markers of this pathology.

Abstract:
Introduction: Cannabis use in pregnancy is related to developmental and mental disorders. The acknowledgement of prenatal exposure frequently depends on the mother’s report, which can often be omitted. There exists little description in the literature of the different methods to detect the use of cannabis during pregnancy. Moreover, nowadays there is no standardized screening available. Objectives: The objective is to analyze the different methods of prenatal screening of cannabis during pregnancy. Methods: A systematic review of studies on the methods of screening of cannabis use during pregnancy and neonates was carried out in PubMed in July 2020 in English, French and Spanish including the last 10 years with the keywords: screening, test, detection, analysis, urine, blood, hair, meconium, lactation, milk, cannabis, marijuana, THC, pregnancy, pregnant, perinatal and prenatal. Results: 107 studies were analyzed, 52 studies included and 55 excluded. Urine toxicology is the most accurate method for maternal testing and depends on chronicity of use, since its duration varies from 2-3 days in occasional users to several weeks in chronic users. Neonatal meconium and umbilical cord tissue indicates fetal exposure to cannabinoids during second and third trimester, being cord tissue more rapidly available than meconium. Neonatal hair indicates third trimester exposure and it is less sensitive than meconium. Maternal serum and hair can also be used to assess cannabis use, being serum affected by chronicity with shorter half-life than urine, and hair less accurate than other drugs of abuse, lasting several weeks positive. To analyze the samples it typically involves a cleanup pretreatment, gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS), enzyme-linked inmunoabsorbent assay (ELISA) and/or an immunoassay screening and a liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) confirmatory method. Conclusions: Standardized prenatal screening of cannabis during pregnancy using analytical methods for drug detection should be established to overcome the heterogeneity and improve clinical practice.

Membrane tethers can form naturally such as during leukocyte rolling (pre-adhesion) stage. Tethers can also be experimentally pulled from cellular membranes to estimate membrane mechanical and electromechanical properties, including bending modulus, adhesion energy of the membrane-cytoskeleton interaction, tension, and electromechanical forces produced by membranes. This technique has been effectively applied to a variety of cells such as red blood cells [1], neutrophils [2], and cochlear outer hair cells [3,4]. Fig. 1 presents the experiment where tethers are pulled from cellular membranes using optically trapped beads.

Abstract:
Previously 1 reported highly significant depression of the chromium-to-vanadium ratio in the nape hair of patients with myopia. It is associated with depressed accommodation and elevated intraocular pressure, both of which are associated with depression of insulin potentiation of glucose uptake by ciliary-muscle insulin receptors.1,2 In this double-masked cohort-panel study, chromium (Cr) and vanadium (V) were measured in red blood cells (erythrocytes). Of the first 184 patients, 27 were myopic (3 diopters) and 14 were hyperopic (1.25 diopter). I excluded patients less than 20 years old, patients taking chromium supplements, patients taking 1 g or more of ascorbic acid per day, aphakic patients, and patients with cataracts. Erythrocytechromium/erythrocytevanadi um (ECr/EV) ratios and ECr distributions and means were significantly lower in the patients with miopia than in the patients with hyperopia: mean SD ECr/EV = 0.150 0.150 for the myopic patients versus 0.731 0.472 for the hyperopic patients (t = 4.488, p), and ECr = 70.1 53.9 ng/ml for the myopic patients and 256.7 160.0 for the hyperopic patients. Foods rich in chromium include most unprocessed naturally sweet or starchy foods. Foods rich in vanadium include chocolate, kelp, mushrooms, most U.S. chow-fed poultry, and seafood larger than herring. To my knowledge, this is the first report of this red-blood-cell-indexed effect on human refractive development.

Abstract:
The reduction of platelet sensitivity to prostacyclin (PGI2), observed in man after the infusion of PGI2 analogues, could suggest the presence of a down regulation mechanism for PGI2 platelet receptors. Robertson (1980) have shown a dcwn-regulaticn of PGE2 binding after PGE2 infusion in rat and Leigfrt (1985) have provided evidence of an homologous desensitizaticn to PGI2 in cultured cells, but direct evidences of PGI2 receptors dcwn-regulaticn in man are lacking. This work was performed to study the behaviour of PGI2 platelet receptors after a PGE2 analogue infusion in man.Eight subjects with peripheral artery disease (stage IV according to Fontaine) treated for 14 consecutive days with six hours iv infusion of Iloprost (Sobering, FRG) at 2 ng/Kg/min were studied. Platelet studies were performed an the 1st, 2nd, 7th and 14th day of therapy, blood sanples being collected immediately before the beginning (between 8.00 and 9.00 a.m.), at the end and 6 and 18 hours (the following morning) after the end of the infusion. PGI2 platelet receptors were investigated by a direct radioligand binding assay. PGI2 inhibitory dose 50 (I.D.50) was evaluated in platelet aggregation induced by ADP 5 ¼M.After six hours of Iloprost infusion a significant reduction of high affinity PGI2 platelet receptor (HAR) nunber was observed (p<0.005) without any change of affinity for the ligand. After 6 hours from the end of the infusion the reduction of the HAR was still statistically significant (p<0.05). The following morning the receptor nunber was restored (n.s.). After one and two weeks from the beginning of the treatment the basal values of PGI2 HAR were not significantly changed from the values recorded on the first day of therapy.PGI2 I.D.50 after the infusion was significantly increased when compared to the basal values (p<0.01). Six hours later the basal sensitivity was restored (n.s.). Eighteen hours later, the following morning PGI2 I.D.50 were still not significantly changed in comparison to the basal values. These data are suggestive for the presence of a reversible down regulation mechanism for the PGI2 receptors.

Abstract:
Hemophilia A is a common X linked hereditary disorder of blood coagulation due to deficiency of factor 8. The gene for factor 8 has been cloned and characterized (Nature 312:326-342, 1984). It is divided into 26 exons and 25 introns and spans 186 kb of DNA. The CGNA is 9 kb and codes for 2351 amino acids. The first 19 amino acids comprise the secretory leader peptide and the mature excreted polypeptide consists of 2332 amino acids. The nucleotide sequence of the exons and the exon-intron junctions is known and the complete amino acid sequence has been deducedSeveral laboratories have used cloned factor 8 DNA sequences as probes to characterized mutations that are responsible for hemophilia A in certain pedigrees. These mutations have been characterized by restriction analysis, oligonucleotide hybridization, cloning and sequencing of DNA from appropriate patientsIn about 500 patients with hemophilia A examined, the molecular defect has been recognized in 39. Both gross alterations (mainly deletions) and point mutations of the factor 8 gene have been found.A total of 19 different deletions have been observed. No two unrelated pedigrees share the same exact deletion. The size of the deleted DNA varies from 1.5 kb to more than 210 kb. All but one of these deletions are associated with severe hemophilia A. A deletion of 6 kb that contains exon 22 only is associated with moderate hemophilia. Some deletions are present in patients with inhibitors to factor 8. No correlation of the size or the position of the deletions can be found with the presence of inhibitors to factor 8.A total of 20 point mutations have been characterized. All are recognized by restriction analysis and involve Taq I sites. All are mutations of CpG dinucleotides and generate nonsense or missence codons. Unrelated pedigrees have the same single nucleotide change because of independent origin of the same mutation. In many instances de novo occurrence of a point mutation has been observed. CpG dinucleotides are hot spots for mutation to TG or CA presumably because of spontaneous deamination of methylcytosine. Some point mutations are present in patients with inhibitors but no correlation of the site of mutation and inhibitor formation has been found. The nonsense mutations are present in patients with severe hemophilia A. A missense mutation (Arg Gin) in exon 26 was found in a patient with mild hemophilia while another Arg Gin mutation in exon 24 has been observed in a patient with severe disease. The creation of a donor splice site in IVS 4 of factor 8 gene has been observed in a patient with mild hemophilia.Few DNA polymorphisms within the factor 8 gene and two other closely linked polymorphisms have been used for carrier detection and prenatal diagnosis of hemophilia A. These DNA markers are useful in more than 90% of families at risk for hemophilia A.The author thanks Drs. Gitschier, Din, Olek, Pirastou, Lawn for communication of their data prior to publication. The hemophilia project at Johns Hopkins was supported by an Institutional grant and NIH grant to S.S.A. and Haig H. Kazazian, Jr.
