Erasmus, Izak Pierre. "Telepreneurship : Strategic bliss." Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, Business Informatics, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-12532.

Abstract:

The strategic management literature indirectly considers entrepreneurship as a subset of strategy, and the historical evolution of the field, specifically that of the Entrepreneurship division of the Academy of Management. Schendel (1990) which placed great emphasis on the topic of entrepreneurship and admitted that some argue that entrepreneurship is at the very heart of strategic management. This thesis explores the strategic use of entrepreneurship in the telecommunication industry.

Through the use of strategic entrepreneurship theories both from the strategy and entrepreneurial fields provide the thesis with a foundation to explore and extract empirical results from two case samples known as Vox telecom and Telkom limited. Through an Interpretivist research design which includes thirty interviews in three different phases resulted in the empirical primary data for analysis. The research approach was carried out through an adaptive GT (Grounded Theory) technique which allowed the thesis to capture industry and organisational specific behaviours. The adaptive GT resulted in open, axial and selective coding which finally represented three themed domains. The domains include: the environmental, innovation and corporate orientation domain.

The adaptive GT results were conducted through eighteen steps which finally represented three cycles. Chapter 6 represent the first cycle, which demonstrate the analysis and result of the primary data which was gathered during the 1st interview phase, mostly collecting entrepreneurial management practises while the 2nd interview phase represent the strategic organisational empirical findings. The result mainly describes the telecom industry through the scope of the two organisations in our sample, namely Telkom and Vox telecom in South Africa.

The second cycle demonstrates the analysis and results which ultimately described the thesis knowledge contribution. The result is displayed and demonstrated in Chapter7 as the Telepreneur framework. The Telepreneur framework includes three models, namely the Telenetwork, Technovation and Telepreneurship model.

Finally, in Chapter8 we attempt to test the formulated Telepreneur framework. This chapter represent the third cycle in which describes the result and analysis of the tested Telepreneur framework. The testing is conducted through evaluating the Telepreneur framework in the telecom industry through the third interview phase. The testing processes use two sets of survey data therefore quantitatively testing the result against specified industry data to further generalize the Telepreneur frame. In the end the outcome demonstrated a positive correlation regards the suggested formulated findings grounded in theory verses the empirical testing of the two sample cases and secondary survey data.

Abstract:
Dear reader,  My aim here, in this essay, is to wonder around and embrace the unknown in the literary genre of letter writing. One of the main questions that the essay circles around is: how embracing the unknown can be a celebration, and a way to get lost, instead of it being something we fear of, like darkness? In the essay I draw bridges between the unknown, the erotic, vulnerability, the use of senses and perception, as well as pondering about the question of whether an experience can be larger than knowledge. The essay is structured in three parts: an introduction, middle part and a final part. In the introduction, the first letter, I open up the purpose of this essay and present my references. In the middle part, I dedicate five letters to the writers and researchers of my references, Rebecca Solnit, Audre Lorde, Brené Brown, Susan Sontag and Deborah Hay. The final part, the last letter, opens up the process of the performance, and how the readings for the essay have affected the doing in the performance. Described in the essay is the journey of methods that were used in the project such as reading, walking around and getting lost. Further the essay describes how dancing later on in the process appeared as a method of getting lost, embracing the unknown through bodily perception and movement. Through this essay and my performance DARK BLISS, I come to a conclusion that being with the unknown is a never-ending process, an endless journey of learning that I will continue to wonder and wander around.

This work includes both a performing and a written part.

Abstract:
There have been many studies of keywords in Paradise Lost. Over the last fifty or so years words such as wander, lapse, error, fruit, balmy, fall, hands, among others, have attracted critics attention. The present enquiry brings under scrutiny three linked keywords which have up to now escaped notice. These are the words bliss, delight, and pleasure. The fundamental proposition of the thesis is that Milton does not use these words haphazardly or interchangeably in his epic poem (though in other of his poetic productions he is by no means as fastidious). On the contrary, he self-consciously distinguishes among the three terms, assigning to each its own particular theatre of operations. Meant by this is that each keyword is selectively referred to a separate structural division of the epic, thus, bliss has reference specifically to Heaven (or to the earthly paradise viewed as a simulacrum of Heaven), delight to the earthly paradise in Eden and to the prelapsarian condition nourished by it; while pleasure, whose signification is ambiguous, refers in its favourable sense (which is but little removed from delight) to the Garden and the sensations associated with it, and in its unfavourable one to postlapsarian sensations and to the fallen characters. Insofar as the three structural divisions taken into account (Hell is not) are hierarchically organized in the epic, so too are the three keywords that answer to them. Moreover, in relating keywords to considerations of structure, the thesis breaks new ground in Paradise Lost studies.

Hogstrom, Mark M. "Barthian Bliss in the Films of Darren Aronofsky." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2011. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/130.

Full text
Abstract:
In this essay I argue that the films of director Darren Aronofsky correspond to the Text of Bliss defined in Roland Barthes' The Pleasure of the Text. Using several aspects of audience reception to dissect Aronofsky’s films justifies identifying his oeuvre as texts of bliss: works that disquiet viewers by unsettling their assumptions of the world around them and their own relationships with it. This Barthes-based appropriation of literary theory to audience reception theory in Film Studies serves as an example of how personally-developed classification systems can be used to circumvent relying on popular opinion and corporate aims for guidance in film classification.

Abstract:

Målordens frekvensnivå påverkade svårighetsgraden i viss utsträckning.

The aim of this study was to investigate which types of words that are easy and difficult toreach with Bliss Swedish standard chart and also which strategies that is more and lessefficient. The participants, 24 female students with no functional limitations, were grouped inpairs. One in each pair was given the task to explain 12 target words that is not present onBliss standard chart, by using only Bliss standard chart. The other person in each pair wasgiven the task to guess which words that were asked for. Since former studies have indicatedthat word class, level of frequency and level of abstraction can affect words' degree ofdifficulty, the target words in this study were chosen based upon those factors. The resultsdemonstrated that the word class of the target words did not affect their degree of difficulty. The frequency of the target words affected their degree of difficulty in some ways. The levelof abstraction of the target words was the factor that affected the degree of difficulty the most.Since the abstract and infrequent target words were most difficult, it may be a good idea toinclude those types of words on the Bliss chart. Some of the strategies that were beneficial forcommunication were the blisser’s use of syntax and syntactic prompting. Another strategy thatwas beneficial for the communication was giving the blisser enough time to finish herphrases. It may be appropriate to recommend those strategies to Bliss users and theircommunication partners.

Abstract:
Conversation Analysis (CA) is a tool to facilitate analysis of everyday conversations. A small number of studies have used CA as an intervention for people with aphasia and have seen positive effects as an outcome of the intervention. The authors of the present study have not found any other studies where CA was used as an intervention in other target groups. The purpose of this study was to investigate if CA may be used in intervention with an adolescent who uses Bliss. The main participants in the present study, which the intervention was based upon, were a sixteen year old girl who communicates through Bliss, and her assistant. The participants were filmed in everyday situations. The video recordings were transcribed and primarily analysed according to CA principles by the authors. The authors of the present study observed both well functioning and not so well functioning communication patterns. The three interventions were based on video recordings, transcriptions and analyses. During the interventions, the authors of the study discussed patterns in communication with the participants. The participants were then given information about selected transcriptions, video recordings and analyses that the authors considered contained interesting patterns. Focus of each intervention was on turn-taking, repair, topic and non-verbal communication. The results of the intervention showed that certain communication patterns that the authors had previously regarded to be less functioning had subsequently improved in certain aspects. Comparisons made before and after the intervention showed that the girl had been given more emancipation to decide topic of conversation and take own initiative in the communication after the intervention. The results also showed that CA can be used to find new Bliss symbols that could be used in addition to the Swedish Bliss standard chart. In regard to turn-taking, repairs and non-verbal communication, similar patterns were observed prior to and after the intervention was carried out.
Deltagarna filmades i vardagliga situationer.

House, Richard. "Clients' understanding of distress and context : ignorance is bliss?" Thesis, University of Leicester, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/31271.

Full text
Abstract:
Robust research evidence shows a higher incidence of psychological distress is endured by those living in deprived social and economic contexts. Yet psychological interventions often focus on self-scrutiny which could over estimate the individual's ability to change their situation. The current research aimed to develop an account of how distressed individuals understand the relationship between distress and context. This knowledge is essential if professionals wish to avoid being regarded by clients as insensitive to the effects of contextual inequalities (e.g. Williams, 1996). Six ex-clients of clinical psychologists were selected and interviewed about their experience of distress, and in particular what they understood about the role of context. Grounded theory methodology was used to guide data collection and analysis. A theme which frequently re-occurred in the data was that distressed individuals sought to ignore their context. This was reflected in the participants' perception of their distress as a personal, internal and unique phenomenon. Consequently efforts to overcome distress emphasised self-management rather than changing context. Interpretation of the results considered how ignoring context might seem beneficial for a distressed individual. However it was also recognised that society had much to gain if distressed individuals did not perceive context to be important in the resolution of distress. It was proposed that clinicians need to question public discourses which seems to encourage distressed individuals to ignore context. Therapeutic interventions should seek to achieve a balance between recognising and valuing private accounts of distress, and challenging any understanding which ignores context.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Raspberry is part of the group of red fruit whose production has grown in Brazil due to the introduction of new cultivars producing twice in one cycle. It is classified as a very delicate and perishable fruit. It has a short life, which makes it essential to develop new methods of postharvest in natura for the expansion of cultivation in the country, since this is the main obstacle to the national marketing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of gamma radiation on the conservation of chilled \'Autumn Bliss\' raspberries. The fruits were harvested in Ibiuna - SP when the plant reached the full maturity. The fruits were selected according to the size, shape, no injuries and visible pathogens. In the following day the fruits were irradiated with 60 Co source at doses of 0.0, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 kGy. After radiation, the fruits were stored at 0 +1 +5 oC and 90% RH for 20 days. The analyzed variables were: weight loss, color, firmness, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid, anthocyanin content, percentage of pectin solubilization and rot incidence were evaluated on the day of the assembly of the experiment and every four days for 20 days. The analysis of respiration and ethylene production were performed at the assembly of the experiment, on the following day of the installation and after it, every two days for a period of 17 days. The results indicated that the application of gamma rays did not affect the respiration, ethylene production, firmness, anthocyanin content and color index of the raspberries. The dose 1.0 and 2.0 kGy reduced fruit decay. The dose of 2.0 kGy significantly reduced the acidity and 1.0 kGy dose resulted in lower loss of fresh weight. It was also observed that the higher dose reduced ascorbic acid content. In conclusion, the use of gama radiation (1.0 kGy) together with cold storage is recommended for further extending the life of fresh raspberries \'Autumn Bliss\', extending the shelf life up to 8 days.

Booth, McCall A. "Domestic Bliss, or Technological Diss? Problematic Media Use, Attachment, and Relationship Outcomes." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2020. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/9149.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine how problematic media use (technoference, internet gaming disorder symptoms, and pornography use) predicted later partner relationship outcomes, operating through the mediator of attachment behaviors. Participants (N = 1039) were from Waves II–IV of the Couple Relationships and Transition Experiences (CREATE) study, a nationally representative quantitative study on marriage relationships across the United States. Both spouses completed surveys reporting problematic media use, attachment behaviors, and relationship outcomes at three separate time points each spaced a year apart. In order to test the hypotheses, three longitudinal actor-partner interdependence models with indirect paths were estimated, with each model corresponding to one type of problematic media use. Results indicated that at the cross-sectional level, all three types of problematic media use had significant indirect actor and partner effects, where problematic media use predicted relationship outcomes through the intervening variable of attachment behaviors. Longitudinally, wife technoference directly negatively predicted later partner attachment behaviors, but there were no full indirect paths of Wave II problematic media to Wave IV relationship outcomes through the intervening variable of Wave III attachment behaviors. Implications of these findings and future directions are discussed.

Rodrigues, Roberta Rego. "Tradução e Apresentação do Discurso: um estudo de "BLISS" de Katherine Mansfield." Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1843/ALDR-86YHVU.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports on a research on discourse presentation (SEMINO & SHORT, 2004) developed at LETRA (Laboratory for Experimentation in Translation), Faculdade de Letras, Federal University of Minas Gerais. More specifically, it discusses a discourse presentation analysis of theshort story Bliss by Katherine Mansfield, three of its translations into Brazilian Portuguese, and three of its translations into European Spanish. Discourse presentation relates to speech, thought and writing in literary texts, though this can be present in other types of text (SEMINO & SHORT, 2004). The thesis draws on Linguistic Stylistics, which takes the investigation of literary texts from a linguistic perspective into account (HALLIDAY, 1964; HASAN, 1989; PROCHÁZKA, 1964). The configuration of discourse presentation modes is investigated in each text, by taking into account clause and minor clause (HALLIDAY & MATTHIESSEN, 2004) as unities of analysis for corpus annotation. The corpus was scanned, revised and annotated manually in XML with discoursepresentation categories. The connection of this XML file to a template format file enabled us to quantify data and visualise it in an HTML file. Results point to the recurrence of thought and mainly speech realised through parataxis in the corpus. Results show that the five most frequentcategories in Bliss are: Direct Speech, Free Indirect Thought, Free Direct Speech, Narration and Internal Narration. The three least frequent categories in this text correspond to Indirect Speech, Free Direct Thought and Indirect Thought. Translations by Érico Veríssimo, Julieta Cupertino and Ana Cristina Cesar into Brazilian Portuguese, and target texts by Lucía Graves and Elena Lambea, and by Juani Guerra into European Spanish have the most recurrent categories, much the same asBliss. Configuration of the five most recurrent categories differ on translation by Esther de Andreis into European Spanish, i.e., Direct Speech, Free Indirect Though, Narration, Internal Narration and Free Indirect Speech are the most frequent categories in this translation, demonstrating that this target text presents more occurrences of Free Indirect Discourse. Indirect Speech, Free Direct Thought and Indirect Thought are the three least recurrent categories in translations by Érico Veríssimo, Julieta Cupertino and Ana Cristina Cesar into BrazilianPortuguese, and in target texts by Lucía Graves and Elena Lambea, and by Juani Guerra into European Spanish, such as the source text (Bliss). In the translation by Esther de Andreis into European Spanish, the three least frequent categories are Free Direct Thought, Indirect Speech andIndirect Thought. Results also point out that co-text and context can motivate some of the shifts found in the target texts and the source text with regard to discourse presentation, such as, Direct Speech from source text translated into Direct Thought in the Brazilian Portuguese target text by Julieta Cupertino; and Free Direct Speech from the source text rendered into Direct Thought in the European Spanish target text by Esther de Andreis. In view of Free Indirect Speech, Free IndirectThought and Internal Narration, common noun is the category that is most repeated; specific deixis is the most recurrent deictic category; Past Simple (Pretérito Imperfeito do Indicativo in the target texts into Brazilian Portuguese, and Pretérito Imperfecto del Indicativo in the translations intoEuropean Spanish) entails the most frequent verb tense, which confirms previous studies on Free Indirect Discourse.
Abstract:
This study investigated the impact of Bliss based computer augmented communication (CAC) on the daily communication and daily activities of severely disabled speech impaired children from a Finnish school for disabled children from the point of view of the children, their discussion partners and therapists; it also investigated the value and meaning of the CAC devices for them. The school staff had considerable experience in the use of computers with disabled children, but only a few had any experience of CAC. In order to gain a rich understanding of the subject matter, a qualitative multiple case study approach was adopted. The longitudinal study investigated CAC in the real life environments of six severely disabled speech impaired children, aged 7 to 15 years, their parents, helpers, teachers, speech therapists and occupational therapists. All of the speech impaired children had cerebral palsy and their main mode of communication was Blissymbolics, used with the aid of a communication folder. The multiple methods of data collection used in the study included interviews, videotaped observations, the Assessment of Communication Skills Questionnaire, essays and data logs. The data gathering started before the participants received their CAC devices and continued 3,6 and 12 months after they received the devices: it involved studying participants in three different communicative environments. The data analysis was conducted by a narrative analysis of each individual case, which was followed up with a cross-case analysis. The process of CAC was highly individual and context dependent. During the study all the speech impaired participants learned to operate their CAC devices. Their initial enthusiasm begant o decreaseth ree to six months after the participants received their devices.A t the end of the study year, one of the participants used his CAC device nearly daily in two of his communicative environments, two of them used their devices regularly a couple of times a week, two of them hardly at all, and one not at all. The CAC devices were hardly used for face-to-face communication, they were mainly used for educational purposes, written communication, play and leisure. The children and their discussion partners perceived that the main reasons for not using CAC devices were the poor usability of devices, such as slow speed of CAC and insufficient vocabularies, and insufficient related services. During the CAC process the motivation to communicate of four participants increased, the communication folder use of three participants increased and vocalisations of two participants increased. V Despite of the perceived limitations of CAC, the speech impaired children considered the CAC devices important for them and helpful primarily in school work and play. Participants' discussion partners assessed that CAC enriched the children's communication and increased dialogue between themselves and the children. Discussion partners also considered as particularly important the participants' independence in being able to operate the CAC devices themselves and their possibility to use voice output. New opportunities provided by CAC devices were especially meaningful to the participants' parents. The study showed that CAC requires substantial highly specialised services and a number of recommendations were made on the basis of the study. CAC interventions should focus on not only the operative and communication skills of the users. Professionals conducting CAC interventions should evaluate more carefully what users need and subsequently evaluate whether the CAC devices meet these needs. They should also understand and support the motivational processes and psychosocial aspects of developing the use of CAC. The findings suggest that CAC devices should be introduced to severely disabled speech impaired children as an additional mode of communication for face-to-face and indirect communicative purposes and within the context of meaningful activities. This study has shown that CAC is an extremely complex phenomenon with a mixture of interrelated elements that affect the daily communication and daily activities of severely disabled speech impaired children.

Abstract:
History
Ph.D.
A commonplace observation among historians describes one or another historical period as a time of "transition" or a particular person as a "transitional figure." In the history of the United States Army, scholars apply those terms especially to the late- nineteenth century "Old Army." This categorization has helped create a shelf of biographies of some of the transitional figures of the era: Leonard Wood, John J. Pershing, Robert Lee Bullard, William Harding Carter, Henry Tureman Allen, Nelson Appleton Miles and John McCallister Schofield have all been the subject of excellent scholarly works. Tasker Howard Bliss has remained among the missing in that group, in spite of the important activities that marked his career and the wealth of source materials he left behind. Bliss belongs on that list because, like the others, his career demonstrates the changing nature of the U.S. Army between 1871 and 1917. Bliss served for the most part in administrative positions in the United States and in the American overseas empire. Seeing hardly any combat and spending only a few years commanding troops, Bliss contributed instead to the creation and development of the army's post-graduate educational system, and he was deeply involved in the Elihu Root reforms of the army and the War Department. Thus what makes his career especially noteworthy, more than many of the soldiers on that list of biographies, is that Bliss helped to create the changes that laid the foundations for the modern army. During the First World War, Bliss worked more closely with the Allied leadership than any other American with the possible exception of Edward M. House. President Woodrow Wilson named Bliss as one of the five commissioners leading the U.S. delegation to the Versailles Peace Conference in 1919. In this position he influenced many members of the American delegation who would remain leaders in the foreign policy elite into the 1940s, and he helped to create the Council on Foreign Relations, an important organization for the foreign policy elite. For Frederick Palmer, the author of the family-authorized biography, the Great War and the Peace Conference were the climax of Bliss's career. A substantial modern scholarly literature exists on Bliss's service in the Great War and the Peace Conference, but none of those works present his earlier career in any detail. As a result, when planning this dissertation with the late Professor Russell F. Weigley, we decided to concentrate on Bliss's activities before 1917. Bliss helped shape the institutions the United States needed as it became a world power, and he trained some of the leaders who would exercise that power. He left a legacy of thoughtful consideration of the organizational, political and moral issues that the exercise of power posed for the United States. It was a life that still teaches us how to face the issues involved in the exercise of world power.

Jansen, Todd Edward. "Blissful Realism: Saul Bellow, John Updike, and the Modern/Postmodern Divide." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/312513.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the reaction of many post-WWII American authors against the modernist privileging of form. These authors predicate their response upon what I call "blissful realism," a term which reflects an unlikely conflation of the critical work of Roland Barthes and Georg Lukács. I argue that Saul Bellow and John Updike are exemplars of a larger post-war contingent, including Flannery O'Conner, Bernard Malamud, Joyce Carol Oates, and John Cheever, to name a few, who use the liminal space between the waning of modernism and a burgeoning postmodern sensibility to complicate and critique modernist formalism while exploring (and often presciently critiquing) the nascent ontological inclinations of postmodernism. The characters within their novels endeavor to declare and maintain their autonomy by, through, and against their contact with a cold reality and defining ideological structures. This tension is mirrored in the aesthetic project of the authors as they work by, through, and against modernist strictures. This dissertation also offers a comparison between Bellow and Updike and the work of Ralph Ellison and Vladimir Nabokov in an effort to distinguish and delineate blissful realism from "late modernism." The concluding chapter posits that recent "post-postmodern" work draws heavily on its blissful realist predecessors. Many contemporary authors' concerns with subjective autonomy, authenticity, and notions of transcendence, in spite of postmodern declarations to the contrary, offer different sensibilities and political possibilities that turn away from irony, play, and image toward agency, meaning, and morality.

Abstract:

This study used consensual qualitative methods to explore the lived, embodied experiences of intuitive entheogen dance experiences (IEDE) in women. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the transcribed interviews. The specific primary aim of the study was to investigate the following research question: What is the lived experience of IEDE, and how can this experience be understood through a psychological perspective? Secondary aims explored the following questions: (a) How does one arrive at IEDE? and (b) What meaning and purpose comes about the experience of IEDE? Six participants were interviewed about their experiences with IEDE. Thematic analysis revealed a somatic nature of the entheogenic experience with thorough illustrations of how the spiritual experience is felt directly through the body. The findings amplify Jung’s understanding of the psychic dimension with the somatic dimension and how these two dimensions might be further integrated and bridged. The results suggest that the body has an inherent widsom and the whole mental health of the person cannot be fully explored and healed without considering the body. It is important for psychotherapists to begin to understand that the body is learning about spirit and psyche through it’s physical expression and that this learning remains in memory in the physical body. Further research would help support and explore the potential for the healing of trauma using movement and altered states of consciousness, explore how the body is the shadow and how unconscious material first becomes lost in the body and then also how it is integrated into the self through movement and through alteres states. Further research could also explore archetypes and complexes within an IEDE, diving deeper into personal, cultural, and primordial themes.

Considering the productive potential of the raspberry crop in Santa Catarina, incorporated into the cultivation of small fruits, as well as the interest of consumers and producers and the need for further studies for the development of culture, this study aimed to characterize yield components and evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of fruits of raspberry, subject to different training systems. The work was carried out in the productive cycle of 2014/2015 and 2015/2016, in the city of Lages, SC. It was evaluated the raspberry an Autumn Bliss under four training systems: Paliçada em V, Espaldeira, Fios Duplos and Cruz de Lorena Invertida. The design was a randomized complete block design with three blocks and two replications per block. It was carried out phenological monitoring of farming, defined by: early budding, early flowering, early and late harvest. For the production of components were assessed: total yield (t ha-1) and production per stem (stem g-1). For vegetative growth were evaluated: stem height (cm), stem diameter (mm) and the indirect measurement of chlorophyll (SPAD). For the physicochemical characteristics of fruits were evaluated: total soluble solids (° Brix), total acidity (% citric acid), SS / TA (ratio). For the definition of costs, any material used in each training system has been added. The experimental data were analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by multiple comparison of means using the Tukey test at 5% probability of error by the statistical program Sisvar 5.3. The training system that promoted greater productivity for the cultivar Autumn Bliss was the Cruz de Lorena Invertida system. The training system that has the lowest cost of implementation is the Fios Duplos system. In relation to quality, there was no difference between the evaluated systems

Abstract:

This essay explores the choices and fates of three women in Thomas Hardy’s A Group of Noble Dames. The lives of Betty Dornell, Emmeline Oldbourne and Barbara Grebe are all influenced by chance, choice and the interference of their parents and lovers. Despite the similar circumstances of their lives as young, upper-class women, it is shown that their fates vary widely as a result of both choice and chance. Ultimately, however, this essay claims that Hardy allows chance to have the final say in each dame’s destiny.

Abstract:

MBA Professional Report
The purpose of this MBA Project is to review existing policy of the Federal Energy Management Program under the purview of National Renewal Energy Laboratory (NREL) for Energy Savings Performance Contracts (ESPCs). This project will assess the ability for the Department of Defense to incorporate emerging technologies in alternative energy to supplement or replace existing power sources for DoD installations within the current Energy Savings Performance Contract policy. To do this the project will review previous and existing Energy Savings Performance Contracts. Further, this project will conduct a cost-benefit analysis of conventional power versus emerging photovoltaic energy for the Army’s Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. The project will also analyze energy demands based on a new force alignment at Fort Bliss in accordance with the recent Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) findings. The project will review current Energy Performance Contract Policy and recommend changes to allow for the use of emerging alternative energy technologies.

Abstract:
The Cost Benefit Analysis of a Waste to Energy (WtE)/Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) Hybrid Facility located on Fort Bliss is a comprehensive analysis of the costs and benefits of a WtE/CSP facility to the Army. Since no capital or operating costs are required from the Army, the increased cost of electricity becomes the overarching cost. This thesis attempts to monetize the benefits of energy security, environmental impact, meeting legislative mandates, and meeting Net Zero Energy goals. Both Congressional legislation and Executive orders dictate the increased consumption and production of renewable energy by federal agencies. WtE/CSP presents a strategy toward achieving these mandates, and Fort Bliss is well located to capitalize on this strategy. This thesis estimates those costs and benefits based on available data. Those estimates are discounted for time and adjusted for inflation. The thesis then conducts sensitivity analysis around potential variations in the data to explore changes to the monetized values.

This paper aims to bring the translation of Bliss tale written by Katherine Mansfield, the theory of translation transcriativa Haroldo de Campos. Therefore, we seek the translation of Ana Cristina Cesar brands that refer to this translation model, which has its main assumptions in the work with the metalanguage. We propose initially a study that captures the function and task of the translator as well as draw a kind of translation archeology (VENUTI, 2000) in order to understand how the evolution of the translation method "sense of direction" contributed so much to creation of a Theory of Translation, as positively contaminated the work of German Romantic poets, in addition to translation studies Benjamin, Paz and Campos. The research is also about the translated version of Bliss tale, performed by Erico Verissimo, which shows up as an important cultural apparatus, given its time of production. As well as to make the necessary counterpoint to translation by Cesar. Thus the thesis presented here, appreciates the work done by translators studied in order to understand how the seizure of the poetic object, from an ideological point of view, acts on translation projects Cesar and Verissimo. It is possible, at this meeting versions, highlight speech marks, gender and Interpretation granting the translation by Cesar, the construction that meets the principles transcriativos fields and reveal the genius of the poet, critic and translator stylistic brevity at the expense of language poetic.

Abstract:
Due primarily to habitat loss and invasive species, extinction rates for North American mollusk taxa are among the highest for any taxonomic group in the world. Competition between invasive and native species often leads to decreases in native populations. For example, a primary reason for listing the Bliss Rapids snail, Taylorconcha serpenticola as threatened in the Snake River drainage was the perceived impacts of the highly invasive New Zealand mudsnail, Potamopyrgus antipodarum. Despite federal protection of T. serpenticola and the known presence of P. antipodarum in the Snake River drainage for almost 20 years, almost nothing is known about their ecology and competitive interactions. For this dissertation I conducted both field and laboratory studies to determine niche overlaps, spatial patterns, and some life history characteristics of both species. I compared optimal growth temperatures and estimated temperature tolerances for each species, under laboratory conditions; 2) examined stage (size) class fecundity rates and growth rates; and 3) examined photophobic tendencies of both species. I then explored environmental conditions and spatial patterns of both species in Banbury Springs, a tributary of the Snake River, near Hagerman, Idaho, that may have affected their distribution and abundance using regression tree analysis and geostatistical methods. I then conducted several competition experiments between both species under controlled conditions at Banbury Springs, developed competition coefficients, and related their growth rates and competitive outcomes to periphyton abundance and diversity. Finally, I monitored and then modeled seasonal and yearly population density trends of both species in a section of Banbury Springs, where both coexist, using time series analysis. Results of this study show that that both species have niche overlaps (i.e. temperature overlaps, photophobic tendencies, and somewhat similar habitat requirements) and can compete for limited food resources, but may have just enough niche separation or their occupied habitat is heterogeneous enough for them to coexist, at present. It is possible however that not enough time has elapsed for the effects of competition with P. antipodarum to push T. serpenticola to extinction.

Abstract:
Some cultures have customs against women. The sati tradition in India is one of them. According to sati, if the husband dies the woman is set on fire with his corpse. These women are believed to become immortal saints. A woman who dies burning herself on her husband&rsquo
s funeral fire is considered virtuous, and are believed to go to Heaven. Another tradition is &ldquo
female circumcision.&rdquo
It is performed in African countries. People believing in the necessity of this custom circumcise women by cutting their clitoris. Circumcised women cannot have sexually pleasure. These women are there to satisfy men&rsquo
s desires and give birth to babies. The third tradition is the general name of which is tö
re is performed in the eastern parts of Turkey. According to tö

In other words, even if a woman is raped, she is found guilty because of having a sexual relationship. In this thesis, these issues and how women are degraded in cultures will be discussed by using the works of famous Indian, Black American and Turkish writers. The books that are discussed in this thesis, Nayantara Sahgal&rsquo

Abstract:
There have been few studies conducted on how children from other than Western populations perceive and learn different graphic symbol sets or systems, especially on how children from poverty contexts learn graphic alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) symbols. Multicultural research is necessary in order to advance and to ensure the quality of the service of AAC for culturally and linguistically diverse AAC users. In the present study the authors strive to describe the learnability of the Blissymbol system in a non-western culture using a semiotic theoretical framework. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the iconicity and learnability of the Blissymbol system for Kenyan children with two different language backgrounds, Swahili and English. This was done in an attempt to investigate potential cultural and linguistic influences of the interpretation and learnability of the Blissymbol. The design and test material was adopted from a previous study (Jennische & Zetterlund, 2012). In the present study, 127 typically developed children in the age six to seven in class one or two in primary school, both from private and public schools, participated. The children had never before encountered Bliss. The children were asked to interpret single Bliss-words and compound Bliss-words, first spontaneously through giving free proposals and then after being given an instructive explanation. The test results were analyzed on a group level and compared between the different groups (age, class and language background). The results show that there was a significant improvement between the pretest and the posttest for all children in the different groups. This indicates that the Blissymbols used in this study had a generally low transparency but a generally high translucency. The results also indicate a generally high learnability and that the children were aided by the instructive explanation. Furthermore, there were significant differences between the different groups, where the children from class two performed better than children from class one and where the English-speaking children performed better than the Swahili-speaking children overall. Age was not significant. The results also indicate that there were differences in how the children interpreted the symbols, but that there were similarities within the specific groups. Further, this indicates that the symbols were interpreted in a similar way by children that belonged to the same age, language and socioeconomic background.

The present work intends to analyze the translation into Portuguese of some of the short stories of Bliss & other stories, by Katherine Mansfield, done by the writer Érico Veríssimo. We propose a comparison of the translation with the source text in order to evaluate the solutions of translation found in the transmission of the sense effects proposed by the author and, consequently, to approach the writer's translator character , because it is a branch of his professional activity that isn’t spread frequently, although it has been of extreme relevance to his subsequent literary works. So, we verified if the translator presents what Ohmann denominates stylistic intuition. In a first instance, we presented a survey of the main theories concerning translation and the deconstructionist theory of Jacques Derrida, on which we were based for the accomplishment of the appreciation of the translations. The study of the relationship between Katherine Mansfield and Érico Veríssimo through the translation perfects translation studies, since it allows analyzing the posture of a writer/translator before a poetic prose. And, finally, the New Zealand writer's short stories and their translations, done by Érico Veríssimo, were analyzed in order to formulate the due conclusions. We took as theoretical base the deconstructionist theory, as well as considerations from specialists in translation studies, such as Francis Henrik Aubert, José Paulo Paes, Haroldo of Campos, and others.

This thesis intends to intertwine the voices of Ana Cristina Cesar and Katherine Mansfield through “Bliss”, a short story written by Mansfield in 1918, and translated by Ana Cristina into the Portuguese language between 1979 and 1981. We emphasize both authors as transition figures, since they stand in a liminar position in relation to the social, historical and cultural moments in which they have lived. We try to show the importance of translation practice not only as a means through which women have achieved access to the lettered world but also to the formation of Ana Cristina’s feminine author identity. We also point out the existence of affinities between Ana Cristina and Mansfield due to questions related to the roles they have played as women. In order to discuss Ana Cristina’s translation practice, we use, among others, concepts extracted from the thought of translation scholars and of intellectuals who have dedicated themselves to literary criticism in general. We analyse how studies which emerged at the end of the 1970s and at the beginning of the 1980s influenced Ana Cristina’s translation of “Bliss” and we verify the way through which she has anticipated postures that are dear to the most recent moments of the discipline Translation Studies.
