Abstract:
Radio, older than television but newer than cinema, has had to fight for acknowledgment of its power as an autonomous medium rather than a blind version of these other media. Yet it is in some ways more interesting for adapters than either of them because it encourages audiences to visualize scenes and spectacles that producers do not have to stage visually, empowering audiences to become more active even as it keeps down production costs. From its earliest days, radio depended on adaptations of earlier novels, stories, poems, plays, and movies. This adaptive impulse survives in contemporary podcasts, torrents, and audio streamed online, all of them relying on audiences whose experiences with other media make them co-creators of the experiences radio offers.

Abstract:
Strategists are encouraged to identify sustained competitive advantages. This volume takes a different tact and provides a perspective on how organizations adapt over time to changing circumstances. This process is characterized as not driven by the inspired wisdom of a grand strategist, but by an ecology of initiatives within the organization. A central role of the organization is to mediate between the market forces in which it operates and the culling and amplification of these initiatives within the organization. In this spirit, a useful touchstone is that of Mendel, who sits intermediate between the blind watchmaker of a purely Darwinian process and a “chess master” strategist as suggested by stylized rational choice approaches. The “Mendelian executive” operates with intentionality, but this intentionality is with respect to the design of the experimental process rather than the identification of specific pathways forward. The two core conceptual pillars of the work are that of path-dependence, what are the adjacent “spaces” to which an organization might move, and “artificial selection,” how the organization mediates aggregate immediate outcomes and the allocation of resources and rewards to the various initiatives and actors within the organization. Entities that have a sustained lifespan are not static, but engage in processes of renewal, whether cells in the human body or lines of business within a firm. A conceptual framework is provided to illuminate some of the fundamental mechanisms underlying this process.

Pocheville, Arnaud, and Étienne Danchin. Genetic Assimilation and the Paradox of Blind Variation. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199377176.003.0003.

Abstract:
This chapter confronts the neo-Darwinian core tenet of blind variation, or random mutation, with classical and recent models of genetic assimilation. We first argue that all the mechanisms proposed so far rely on blind genetic variation fueling natural selection. Then, we examine a new hypothetical mechanism of genetic assimilation, relying on nonblind genetic variation. Yet, we show that such a model still relies on blind variation of some sort to explain adaptation. Last, we discuss the very meaning of the tenet of blind variation. We propose a formal characterization of the tenet and argue that it should not be understood solely as an empirical claim, but also as a core explanatory principle.

Cermak, Michael. Spectacular Snakes of Australia. CSIRO Publishing, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643101371.

Full text
Abstract:
Spectacular Snakes of Australia showcases these beautiful creatures which play such an important part in our biodiversity. It portrays most of the species found in Australia, such as tiger snakes, copperheads, brown snakes, death adders and sea snakes, up close and personal. It also includes some unique photographs, such as the hatching of scrub pythons, that offer a rare glimpse into their more intimate lives. The informative text, based on the latest research, describes the reproductive biology, behaviour, predators and prey of these reptiles, as well as their habitat and conservation values. Readers will explore the importance of colours and patterns in allowing snakes to blend into their environment, their defence and attack mechanisms, and the adaptations they have undergone to cope with their surroundings. In addition, the author provides some anecdotes on his encounters with snakes, and clears up a few myths regarding snake behaviour. Richly illustrated with exceptional photographs, Spectacular Snakes of Australia features the deadly serious as well as the quirky – from snakes that love water to those with potent venom, and even snakes that are blind! This book is a real treat for snake lovers.

Abstract:
Many physical and psychological benefits of exercise and sport participation exist for blind or deaf children, as well as children with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, myelomeningocoele, spinal cord injury, and amputations. There are also a number of challenges these children must face in these endeavours. It is important to understand the injuries to which children with disabilities are predisposed and general strategies for prevention. Some adaptations via adjustments in rules and use of specialized wheelchairs and prosthetic devices allow participation in a more diverse range of athletic activity for this population. Many opportunities exist for children with disabilities, including Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities, to participate in sports at a local or recreational level, all the way to the elite level in the Paralympic Games and Special Olympic World Games. It is important that health professionals become familiar with the unique challenges faced by these individuals.
