Abstract:
Eggplant is a familiar and admired vegetable in Bangladesh. It is a highly perishable vegetable and cannot be preserved long. Drying is an ancient preservation method used to extend shelf-life of fruits and vegetables. Different Pretreatments may affect the drying kinetics of foods. A study was conducted to evaluate how pretreatments affect the drying behavior of eggplant. Proximate composition of fresh eggplant was analyzed. The samples of constant thickness (8 mm) were dried at 50°C, 55°C and 60°C to determine the effect of temperature on drying rate constant, while for determining the effect of thickness on rate constant, eggplant slices of 4, 6 and 8 mm thicknesses were dried at a constant temperature of 55°C. It was observed that, drying rate decreased with the increase in thickness and the index ‘n’ was found to be 0.89 at 55°C. Under similar drying condition at constant thickness (8 mm), drying time showed an inverse relationship with temperature. The activation energy (Ea) was calculated as 3.242 Kcal/g-mole. Eggplant slices having the highest thickness (8 mm) were blanched at 70°C, 75°C and 80°C for 1, 2 and 2.5 minutes, respectively using hot water bath to determine the effective blanching time and temperature. It was observed that the samples blanched at 75°C and 80°C for 2 minute were enough to inactivate the enzymes. Pretreated (blanched, sulphited and blanched plus sulphited) eggplant slices having constant thickness (8 mm) were dried at constant temperature of 55°C. The drying time was influenced by pretreatments. The highest drying rate was observed for eggplant slices with blanched plus sulphited (5% KMS solution) samples while eggplant slices with 5%KMS solution dipped for 10 minutes showed the lowest drying rate. In case of fresh slices, drying time was lower than blanched and sulphited samples but higher than blanched plus sulphited samples. Pretreatment was also found effective on the color changes (preservation or degradation). Blanching gave a bright color compared to fresh sample but less bright compared to sulphited samples. In case of SO2 retention, blanched plus sulphited sample showed higher retention than sulphited sample. Sulphited sample retains 44.8 ppm SO2/100g of sulphited sample, while the blanched plus sulphited sample retains 280 ppm SO2/100 g of blanched plus sulphited sample. J. Bangladesh Agril. Abstract:
SummaryThe reason of the so called ulcerated capillaritis alba or idiopathic atrophie blanche is vasculopathy caused by severe venous hypertension. Thrombosed and rarificated vessels worsen the oxygenation, increase permanent inflammation and impede the necessary compression therapy. The anti-inflammatory effects of heparin alleviate pain and being independent from the antithrombotic ones it needs much lower doses for treatment. This anti-inflammatory effect is now becoming more important in clinical phlebology. Case studies of more than 50 patients and one prospective randomized study of 87 patients clearly demonstrate the ameliorated healing of ulcerated atrophie blanche. In our office we could document this positive effect with 22 patients. We present the pathophysiology of low molecular heparins for ulcerated capillaritis alba and our own experiences with it.

Abstract:
The article reconstructs the illustrating history of “La Revue Blanche”, the leading French literary and artistic magazine of the fin de siècle epoch. Leaving out the analysis of literary content, the authors considers the petite revue through the prism of its most significant artistic achievements. In order to achieve this goal, a rather wide range of graphic artists who collaborated with “La Revue Blanche” at one time or another is outlined, and the conditional genre ranking of engravings published and distributed with the help of the journal is carried out. Based on the data obtained, a periodization of the short history of “La Revue Blanche” illustrating is proposed. The article attaches great importance to the stylistic and iconographic analysis of individual artworks. In the case of the ones by Vuillard, Roussel, and Bonnard, it is possible to put forward new semantic interpretations and emphasize the confessional nature of the prints created by the masters for the design of the journal’s frontispiece. In the article significant attention is given to the history of introducing the practice of publishing graphic literary portraits by Vallotton in “La Revue Blanche”, which at some point are forced to take on the utilitarian function of vignettes. Equally important is the review of the publication history of the independent illustrated supplement “NIB”, which, as is well known, has only had three issues. The authors see in “NIB”, at the same time, an artistic reincarnation of fumiste chatnoiresque satire, clearly close to Toulouse-Lautrec, Valloton and Bonnard, and a graphic revealing of the internal philosophical and aesthetic conflict that existed within the Nabis art group. In addition, the authors also describe the features of the Nathanson brothers’ publishing activity, emphasizing the direct dependence of the content of published products on the owners’ tastes.

Abstract:
In the context of the question of metaphor, Jacques Derrida plays a particularly important role in the history of thought. In his work La Mythologie Blanche with the important subtitle: La métaphore dans le texte philosophique, among other questions, he problematizes the history of metaphor problems, implications arising from historical and contemporary metaphor, as well as the possibilities of the relation of science to it. And, because the question of metaphor is given as one of the important sources of religious conflicts in this paper, the metaphor in the theological text is to be problematized, following in the footsteps of Derrida's thought achievements. In other words: in this paper, one has to read one question of metaphor in a philosophical text as a question of the possibility of metaphor in a theological text. The hypothesis of this paper to be proved is that religious conflicts arise from a multitude of phenomena that we can reduce to the lowest common denominator named as ignorance, and in this context as a source of subject ignorance -among many other phenomena -a metaphor is given in the theological text: there is no intention here to prove the existence of metaphor in the theological text but the possibility of the existence of metaphor in the theological text in the wake of Derrida's mental achievements on the basis of which Derrida's work La Mythologie Blanche is given as a contribution to the incoherence of religious conflicts.

Abstract:
Preparation of biscuit incorporating lemon peel powder can be a new approach in formulating fortified fast food. This investigation was made to evaluate quality of prepared biscuits with lemon peel powder. The effect of temperature on drying time and physiochemical properties of lemon peel powder and their effects on biscuits were also examined. Two drying temperatures (650C and 750C) were employed for both blanched and unblanched lemon peel. The formulated biscuit samples incorporating 1 % lemon peel powder were compared with control biscuits which were prepared with 100% wheat flour. It took longer time (18 hr) for drying of blanched sample at 65 0C whereas shorter time (8 hr) was required for that of blanched sample at 750C. There was a significant decrease in the physiochemical properties of lemon peel powder with the increase of temperature except protein and fibre content. In addition, moisture content of the unblanched sample was found to be lower than the blanched sample at the same temperature. Significantly higher ascorbic acid was obtained by the unblanched samples. Protein and fibre content for both unblanched and blanched sample at the same temperature were found to be higher. All the samples were significantly different at 5% level of significance for overall acceptability. Biscuits prepared with unblanched dried lemon peel powder (at 650C) sample secured the highest score in case of all the sensory parameters. Therefore, quality fortified biscuit can be prepared commercially by incorporating 1 % lemon peel powder in wheat flour for the fast food consumer.

Abstract:
Sea buckthorn is ranked among the most significant super foods worldwide. Its fruits and leaves are used as fresh or dried in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry. As super food any pre-treatment should sustain this property and hence this research was focused on osmotic dehydration of sea buckthorn by stevia also a super food. Therefore, water loss, sugar gain, acidity, ascorbic acid and water diffusivity were evaluated during osmotic dehydration of sea buckthorn by two stevia solutions, 15ο and 30οBrix and following were air-dried at 50οC by comparing the effect of steam blanching per case. Steam blanched samples exhibited increased water loss at the end of the process, 55% at 30οBrix and 48% at 15οBrix, compared to untreated samples where losses were 43% (30οBrix) and 28% (15οBrix) respectively. Ascorbic acid was significantly reduced, exceeding 50% in steam blanched samples and 23% in untreated samples. Steam blanched samples dehydrated at 15oBrix exhibited 82% dry matter increase and only 39% the untreated samples. Similarly, samples dehydrated at 30oBrix exhibited 84% dry matter increase and 53% when no steam blanching was applied. Solid gain was seven times less compared to water loss which is attributed to high molecular weight of steviol glycoside. The osmotic dehydration and airdrying curves were described effectively by Peleg and Fick models, and Logarithmic and Fick models respectively, having in all cases R2 adj>99% and SEE<0.2. The water diffusivity of steam blanched samples was 3.2-5.57×10-11 m 2 /s for water loss and 1.27- 2.03×10-11 m 2 /s for solid gain at 30oBrix and 2.12-4.27×10-11 m 2 /s and 0.91-1.98×10-11 m 2 /s at 15oBrix. Finally, the water diffusivity of steam blanched samples during air-drying was 2.11-2.29×10-11 m 2 /s and 1.56-1.66×10-11 m 2 /s in the case of untreated samples.

AbstractWe consider the Cauchy problem for a parabolic-elliptic system in{\mathbb{R}^{2}}, called the parabolic-elliptic Keller–Segel equation, which appears in various fields in biology and physics. In the critical mass case where the total mass of the initial data is{8\pi}, the unboundedness of nonnegative solutions to the Cauchy problem was shown by Blanchet, Carrillo and Masmoudi [7] under some conditions on the initial data, on the other hand, conditions for boundedness were given by Blanchet, Carlen and Carrillo [6] and López-Gómez, Nagai and Yamada [23]. In this paper, we investigate further the boundedness of nonnegative solutions.

This dissertation establishes the age, depositional environment, composition, and climatic conditions for the Cape Blanco flora. The paleotemperature estimated by the Cape Blanco flora, the Temblor flora of California, and the Seldovia flora of Alaska are then compared with sea surface temperatures estimated from oxygen isotope analysis of benthic foraminifera. The unconformity-bound shallow marine sandstone of Floras Lake includes a redeposited tuff bed which contains fossil leaves at Cape Blanco. An 40 Ar/ 39 Ar age of 18.26 ± 0.86 Ma is presented for the tuff as well as a paleomagnetic stratigraphy of the sandstone. Sedimentary structures of the tuff bed are evidence that the tuff was deposited at or just above the strand line. The depth of tuff deposition was shallower than the adjacent marine sands, and this short-lived shoaling may have been a result of increased sediment supply. The fossil flora was an oak forest with numerous species of Fagaceae. Additional components include lanceolate Salicaceae leaves, entire margined Lauraceae, fragmentary Betulaceae, and lobed Platanaceae. Coniferous debris, charcoal, Equisetales, and Typhaceae forms are also figured. Ten leaf forms could not be confidently assigned to established names but are described, figured, and called angiosperm forms 1-10. In total 44 unique forms are identified. The size and margin type of the dicot specimens are quantified, and by comparison with known modern floras, a former mean annual precipitation of 201 (+86, -61) cm and a former mean annual temperature of 18.26 ± 2.6°C are estimated. The paleotemperature of the ∼17.5 Ma Seldovia Flora and the ∼17.5 Ma Temblor Flora are estimated using the same method, establishing a ∼0.7°C per degree of latitude temperature gradient for the northern hemisphere temperate zone. The leaf based gradient is steeper than the sea surface temperature gradient, of ∼0.26°C per degree of latitude as estimated from oxygen isotopic composition of foraminifera collected from ocean sediment cores. Both fossil leaf and isotope methods suggest that the early Miocene was ∼5°C warmer than today. This thesis includes unpublished co-authored material.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this assignment is to examine two investigative journalism programmes in South Africa, namely Carte Blanche and SpecialAssignment in order to ascertain whether two South African policing organisations have been subjected to racist stereotyping on these two programmes. Both these programmes are held in high esteem within South African and international media circles. Carte Blanche has won many awards, such as the prestigious eNN African Journalist of the Year Award in 2002. Special Assignment won the equivalent award in 2001. The approaches and styles in revealing the truth by using investigative forms of journalism are however slightly different. Both Carte Blanche and Special Assignment have produced stories from August 2003 to September 2004 that have exposed corruption within the South African policing organisations. Many of the perpetrators within the police force were identified as people of colour. This assignment therefore aims to discover whether racist stereotyping exists in this niche of investigative journalism television programmes. This opens up the possibility for these portrayals to be seen as stereotypical, since the dominant press codes in South Africa stipulates that reference to 'race' in news reporting should only be done where it will contribute significantly to understanding the subject matter or if the reference to the race of the person is particularly applicable. This assignment aims to discover whether racist stereotyping exists in this niche of investigative journalism television programmes. The research method comprised analysing programmes on Carte Blanche and Special Assignment that dealt with the South African policing organisations from August 2003 to September 2004. The original transcripts of the programmes were retrieved from the relevant websites of Carte Blanche and Special Assignment and have also been studied. Sources on media ethics as well as newspaper and magazine articles dealing with the South African policing organisations, crime and corruption were scrutinized in order to provide background information for the study. The analyses of the programmes was complemented by interviews conducted with the investigative journalists at the helm of the two programmes, namely, Ruda Landman from Carte Blanche and Jessica Pitchford from Special Assignment.
Abstract:

Abstract:
Light has been shed several times on the success of whitening creams in India: it is established. From Fair & Lovely’s (F & L) face creams to whitening soaps for personal hygiene: every part of the body seems to bear allegiance to the whiteness motto. With the nineties came liberalisation and a drastic shrinking in the market shares of F & L, although the company had been a business leader without any competitor for 30 years. The cosmetics industry struggles to find a fine balance between Indian and Western competition. The development of this industry did play a crucial part in the craze for whiteness. And yet, it should not obliterate the antiquity of the preference for skin whiteness in India.Race colours lead to a renewed questioning of the relationship between Aryans and Dravidians. Cast colours are supposed to allow a physical difference between higher and lower castes. Class colours bring modernity and social prestige. The whiteness of the skin and the fairness of the complexion thus moves from the feminine spheres of beauty and marriage towards general questions on society order. Through the history of both still and moving images, the anthropological approach aims at understanding where this preference comes from and why it has found an echo in the Indian society today

Abstract:
In a media landscape that continues to be characterized by heteronormativity, queer female audiences are continuously finding ways to make popular texts their own. Previous scholarship on queer female reception has largely approached queer meaning-making as a text-audience relationship, a perspective which disregards the position of films as commodities surrounded by an extensive promotional network. This thesis investigates the role of commodification in the process of queer meaning-making in popular film through a reception study of the film Ocean’s 8 (Gary Ross, 2018). Using a netnographic method that places social media reception in dialogue with the film and its promotional materials, it challenges the idea that queer meaning is always either embedded in the film text or brought in by the audience “(in)appropriating” the text. Rather, the film and its promotional context create an ambiguity that allows queer readings to flow freely, and actively interacts with a pre-existing Cate Blanchett-as-lesbian fantasy amongst audiences to steer those readings in particular directions. Queer female meaning-making, then, is far from a one-directional action, but rather a complex and constant renegotiation of queerness between commercial actors and audiences alike.

Abstract:
One of the most important ‘nouvelle vérités’ that has challenged 1970s feminisms in the Anglophone world is intersectionality, and particularly the need to address race and ethnicity as constantly interacting with gender, sexuality, class and other variables; This chapter provides some general reflections on the extent to which a similar crisis and trajectory are present in French feminist histories and narratives, but its main focus is a case-study of Annie Ernaux’s work in this regard, considering questions that have rarely been asked in Ernaux criticism to date: to what extent does Ernaux engage with race and ethnicity as well as class and gender in her writing? If she is an unusually intersectional writer in terms of gender, sexuality and class, and in more recent years one might add age and ageing, does this approach and the strong influence of sociology on Ernaux’s writing lead to awareness of dimensions of oppression that she herself as a white French woman has not personally experienced? How does Ernaux write her own whiteness? Is the ‘I’ of Ernaux’s texts, whether fictional or autobiographical, ‘unevoix blanche’, adopting the cloak of universal whiteness?

Orson Welles offers Dolores the role of Isabel Minifer in The Magnificent Ambersons. John Barrymore dies and the surviving Costellos attend his funeral, save for Dolores. She and Vruwink buy a ranch in Fallbrook, California, and raise rabbits for the war effort. Maurice and Helene appear as extras together in a King Vidor film but don’t make the final cut. Because of Helene’s illness and Le Blanc’s war involvement, Dolores agrees to care for Deirdre full time. Her relationship with Le Blanc sours when he reneges on his promise to pay her child support. Helene discovers Le Blanc is only using her to go to bat for him with Zanuck at Fox, where he is working as a cartoonist, and leaves him.

Abstract:
This chapter centers on global motherhood, a conceptual label that defines the ethical underpinnings of female celebrities’ undertakings beyond borders. The analysis of global motherhood is located within the ethics of care, noting that global expressions of care ethics are useful for thinking through celebrities’ maternal practices beyond borders. The research focuses on the maternal practices and discourses of Cate Blanchett (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees [UNHCR] Goodwill Ambassador since 2016) and Angelina Jolie (UNHCR Special Envoy since 2012), in particular their tendency to relate to refugees through their personal experiences as mothers, their sense of cosmopolitan obligation, and the racial implications of their global engagements. The chapter advances the argument that cosmopolitan thought is abstract, is gendered, and prioritizes men’s moral reasoning rather than women’s ethical stories and experiences. Nonetheless, cosmopolitanism can provide fertile ground for studying celebrity humanitarianism because celebrities themselves resort to cosmopolitan-inflected language in describing their activism. Moreover, the study of the other-regarding acts of individual celebrities can reduce the abstraction inherent in cosmopolitanism. These arguments are sustained through a discursive analysis of texts that center on celebrity global motherhood, as performed by Angelina Jolie and Cate Blanchett in the area of refugee policy.

Abstract:
The project and construction of the German School of Valencia took place between 1957 and 1961 by the architects Pablo Navarro Alvargonzalez and Julio Trullenque (supervised by Rolf Dieter Weisse and Peter Müller) who fully adapted to the principles of Modern architecture. In addition, typical influences of constructive and architectural practices in the German context are detected due to the collaborative work between technicians of both nationalities (Spanish and German). This is the case of the modern conception of the building as a block arranged on a free floor and its exposed concrete structure, combined with independent enclosure walls, taking special care of the finishing. Furthermore, it is remarkable the detailed development of the structural project, and the widespread use of reinforced concrete, whose pouring and curing processes were rigorously controlled. This represented an innovation in Valencia since constructive quality from postwar period on was quite precarious. These issues bring to light the need to delve into the building and its construction once again, given the significance and early chronology as a participatory work of the architectural modenity of the 20th Century.

Abstract:
Compared with common speed reducers, the cycloidal ones (also known as cycloid drives) cover a wider range of transmission ratios, have a higher load-carrying capacity, are smaller, exhibit a smoother running and a good efficiency. These characteristics make them attractive for industrial applications, especially for robotics applications, machine tools and linear axis positioning in assembly machinery. In this paper, a theoretical and experimental investigation on an innovative cycloidal speed reducer will be presented. The typical cycloid drive has a planet wheel, the profile of which is the inner offset of an epitrochoid, meshing with cylindrical rollers connected to the case. This reducer, on the contrary, has an external ring gear, the transverse profile of which is the external offset of an epitrochoid, and engages with the planet wheel by means of cylindrical rollers. This paper will investigate the structural characteristics and the kinematical principles of this type of reducer. A theoretical approach based on the envelope theory (following Litvin’s approach) will be developed and compared with a development of Blanche and Yang’s approach. Furthermore, a simplified procedure to calculate force distribution on cycloid drive elements, as well as its power losses and theoretical mechanical efficiency will be presented. The effects of design parameters on the values of the forces will be studied, for an optimal design of this type of reducer. The theoretical model will be then tuned using the results of tests on a specific rig. As a result of the experimental tests, the reducer mechanical efficiency dependency on speed and torque will be described. The aim of this work is to perform the fine tuning of a theoretical model in order to predict the operating behavior of the cycloid drive, and to improve its design procedure.

In ASME 2006 2nd Joint U.S.-European Fluids Engineering Summer Meeting Collocated With the 14th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. Full text
Abstract:
In this work, a numerical 3D simulation of a longitudinal ventilation system is developed to analyze the fire behavior inside a road tunnel. Recent disasters, like crashes in the Mont Blanc tunnel (France, 1999) or San Gottardo (Italy, 2001), have shown the need for better integral actions during possible fire incidents. The minimum delay time, required for starting the jet fans, or the evolution of the smoke patterns inside the tunnel are critical issues when rescue plans are designed. Some methods to study the smoke propagation during a fire are: pseudo-thermal scale models, full scale test and numerical models. Several contributions using the first method can be found in references [1], [2] and [3]. However it is very difficult to extrapolate the results from this kind of models. The second method (full scale test) is the most expensive of all and only two of them have been conducted recently: EUREKA Project [4] and the Memorial Tunnel Fire Ventilation Test Program [5]. The last method (numerical models) it is now under development. The objective of this work is to validate a numerical model, to predict the behavior of the smoke generated during a fire incident inside a road tunnel, comparing its results with previous experimental data collected in the Memorial Tunnel Project. In addition, a good agreement was achieved, so a methodology to predict the performance of a longitudinal ventilation system in case of fire was accurately established.

Abstract:
Abstract Accurate three-dimensional CFD simulation is of great importance to the flow and heat transfer of flow boiling in the steam generator in nuclear power plant, in which bubbly flow is the main flow pattern. One of the biggest challenges for the CFD simulation is the coalescence and breakup model for bubbles dispersed in the continuous fluid. Recently, several new bubble coalescence and breakup models have been developed combined with the inhomogeneous Multi-Size-Group (MUSIG) model in the Eulerian framework in addition to the standard closure model (Luo and Svendsen (1996), and Prince and Blanch (1990)), which has been widely adopted in the CFD simulations in bubbly flow using the Eulerian method. For example, Liao had developed a comprehensive closure model (2015), in which five collision mechanisms and four breakup mechanisms have been included in the model. However, proper coefficients for the Liao model must be determined to properly address the proportion for various mechanism in the coalescence and breakup models. In this paper, we compared the predictions using the standard closure model and the Liao model (2015) combined with the iMUSIG model for the case of adiabatic upward bubbly flow in vertical pipe, as well as the corresponding experimental results reported by Lucas et al (2008) which were obtained at TOPFLOW test facilities. Six simulated working conditions are chosen. The significance of various mechanisms on the bubble coalescence and breakup were analyzed based on the bubble size distributions in various heights obtained in the CFD predictions and experiments. Finally, a set of proper coefficients for various mechanisms in the coalescence and breakup models of Liao (2015) was developed for the simulated conditions.
