Abstract:
This study examines the pornographic images of black women from Sara Baartman, the “Venus Hottentot,” to the Middle Passage, the Auction Block, Plantation Life, Harlem Renaissance, Blaxpomploitation movies, mainstream contemporary cinema, and pornography. It is based on the premise that throughout history black women’s images have been pornographic. The researcher found that the pornographic images present in today’s visual media are outgrowths of the debilitating, racialized and sexualized images of black women historically. The conclusion drawn from the findings suggests that black women’s images in cinema continue to subjugate and objectify black women on and off screen.

Abstract:
Poet and professor Sterling A. Brown (1901-1989) played a significant role in the birth of black literary and cultural studies through his literary and academic careers. Brown helped to establish a new wave of black cultural and folklore studies during his time as the “Director of Negro Affairs” for the Federal Writers’ Project. As a professor at Howard University, Brown influenced black literary studies through his literary criticisms and seminars and his role as a mentor to literary figures of the next generations. Through letters to and from Sterling Brown and manuscripts, this thesis argues that Brown’s poetry, publications and folk studies in the nineteen twenties and thirties where the groundwork for his most prolific role of teacher-mentor.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of a large composition for chamber orchestra titled Brown Eyes, Black Magic and an accompanying analytical paper. The piece, approximately twelve minutes long, is a tribute to women of color in America. The title pays homage to the “Black Girl Magic” campaign that CaShawn Thompson founded in 2013 to empower women of color by highlighting their achievements in different fields (Wilson 2016). Although the piece is not programmatic, I tried to create a mysterious sound world, in which the listener focuses on the beauty of ever-shifting sonic colors. The composition explores musical texture and timbre, and is influenced by the works of Orlando Jacinto Garcia, Georg Friederich Haas, Krzysztof Penderecki, Arnold Schoenberg, and Anton Webern.

Abstract:
The way race works to shape politics is changing as demographic patterns alter the traditional dynamic of race relations throughout the United States. One pattern is the increased tendency of African-Americans and Latinos to reside in the same locality. While popular opinion suggests that such contexts should result in the formation of “rainbow coalitions,” several scholars have found evidence that inter-minority relations are characterized by high levels of political competition. One of the policy areas in which competition has been observed most often is education. This dissertation examines the conditions under which African-American/Latino relations are likely to be characterized by cooperation or conflict within the education policymaking process. It utilizes a survey of 1800 school districts, containing 96% of all urban districts in the United States. The results produced by this study, therefore, are applicable to nearly the entire universe of urban educational systems. Another unique aspect of this project is that, rather than focusing on relations at one stage of the policy process, it attempts to trace this dynamic through each stage. Thus, the dissertation begins with a look at the circumstances under which Black/Brown electoral coalitions will form in school board elections. The findings suggest that coalition formation is contingent upon structural contexts, specifically the presence of partisan elections, and upon the citizenship status of the Latino population within a district. The dissertation goes on to trace the cooperative and competitive forces that affect the hiring of African- American and Latino administrators and teachers. Lastly, I use theories of bureaucratic politics and racial context to study the quality of education received by minority students. I find that, controlling for other factors, more diverse school districts have more equitable educational policies. I also find evidence to support the contention that more diverse teaching faculties tend to result in beneficial outcomes for both African- American and Latino students.

Abstract:

The brown widow spider Latrodectus geometricus was discovered in southern California in 2003, and anecdotal evidence suggested that native western black widow Latrodectus hesperus populations are declining due to L. geometricus, but there were no quantitative studies that tested potential mechanisms. I related species abundances to temperature, humidity, human population size, human home number and elevation. I also conducted laboratory experiments on competition for dwellings, prey consumption and capture web properties. Brown and black widow abundances were highest in coastal and desert parks, respectively. Unlike L. hesperus, L. geometricus abundances did not decrease from summer toarinter. Brown widow egg sacs were more abundant than black widows at coastal parks. Brown widow abundance and human population size were positively related. Black widow abundances were negatively correlated with humidity. Prey consumption and web structure did not differ between species, but brown widows were highly successful at displacing black widows from dwelling spaces under warm conditions.

Stephen, Alastair B. "Genetic studies in Scottish brown trout (Salmo trutta L.)." Thesis, University of Stirling, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/2142.

Full text
Abstract:
The Scottish brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) is identified as an important resource which requires responsible and continual management. This study was divided into two parts; an electrophoretic survey of wild trout populations in Scotland, and a quantitative assessment of the genetic component to growth rate in various stocks, grown under hatchery and farm conditions. Sixty wild populations were sampled by various methods. All fish were typed using brain, eye, heart, liver and muscle tissue and starch gel electrophoresis for thirty four enzyme loci, thirteen of which were found to be polymorphic. Gene diversity analysis was conducted on the data collected, 33% of the diversity being attributed to differences between populations, much of the variation was thought to be due to founder effects. Evidence is presented to support a hypothesis that the trout in Scotland are derived from two main post glacial invasion stocks. Future management strategies for wild stocks of Scottish brown trout are discussed. Growth trials were conducted at Howietoun fish farm in order to calculate heritability estimates for growth rate. Hierarchical and factoral crossing schemes were employed, using broodstock from three stocks. Heritability estimates for growth rate were found to be high and it was concluded, significant genetic gains could be achieved if growth rate was the only trait of commercial interest and truncated mass selection was adopted. Attempts were made to investigate the relationship between heterozygosity and growth rate in the hatchery populations. It was concluded that more data were required to make a meaningful assessment, but from this study little evidence exists for a positive correlation between heterozygosity and growth rate. Correlations between early life cycle stages and subsequent growth are discussed.

Martínez, Montero Marina. "Studies of Black Hole Horizons." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/396271.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis has focused entirely on classical and thermodynamical aspects of black hole physics. We have developed four different projects involving different kinds of black holes. 1 BLACK BRANES IN A BOX Neutral black branes with extended horizons are dynamically unstable to long wavelength perturbations along their horizons; this instability is known as the Gregory-Laflamme instability. In some regimes, the dynamics of black branes can be captured by an effective hydrodynamic description. We have studied the effective hydrodynamics of neutral black branes inside a cylindrical cavity to investigate their dynamic and thermodynamic instabilities. We have used the size of the box as a control parameter for stability (smaller cavities increase rigidity and contribute to the stability of the solutions); we have ob¬served that both instabilities disappear at the same critical value of the cavity radius. We have discussed the Correlated Stability Conjecture, which relates thermodynamic and dynamic instabilities in these objects and we have argued that its correct interpretation is given by the Correlated Hydrodynamic Stability (CHS). The CHS relates the presence of unstable hydrodynamic modes to the local thermodynamic instability; this is transparent in our approach. In the effective fluid description we have computed the specific quantities that characterize the fluid. Finally we have studied the system close to the critical point at which the instability disappears and we have obtained that the wave number that marks the onset of the instability vanishes with a critical behaviour ruled by a critical exponent of 1/2. 2 BLACK STRING FLOW We have constructed an event horizon describing a heat flow, that remains constant in time, between to asymptotic regions at constant temperature. This horizon is the smooth interpolation between the horizon of a black string and a planar acceleration horizon. This was the first exact description of a flowing horizon connecting a stringlike horizon with a planar one (this can also be an infinitely big spherical black hole); the construction is valid for any number of dimensions greater than four. We obtained the horizon generators as well as the exact geometry and we showed that this horizon resembles that of flowing funnels. We computed a surface gravity that approaches on one end, the black string's surface gravity, and on the other, the infinite black hole's surface gravity which is 0. We also computed the expansion associated to the horizon generators and it vanishes in both asymptotic regions; thus reflecting the property that the black string flow horizon interpolates between two asymptotic horizons, each of which is asymptotically in equilibrium at different temperature. This construction shows that stationary black holes with non-killing horizons are possible with non-AdS asymptotics. 3 BUMPY BLACK HOLES We have constructed numerically three new families of stationary black holes with a single angular momentum. These black holes have spherical topology but they differ from the Myers Perry solution (higher dimensional generalisation of Kerr solution) in that the radius of the sphere transverse to rotation varies non-monotonically with the polar angle. We have seen that half of these solutions connect, in the space of solutions, the Myers Perry family with other families featuring non-spherical topology such as the black ring, the black saturn, etc. We found strong evidence for the presence of cones in the horizons of solutions close to the topological transition in solution space. The other half of the solutions spread widely in the rotation plane and develop a singularity along their equator. These probably do not connect to other stationary black hole branches. We have also studied stability properties of all branches. 4 BLACK HOLE MERGER We have described in an exact analytic way the event horizon of a black hole merger in the extreme mass ratio (EMR) limit; we have done it for four and five dimensions. Curiously numerical computation in which the ratio of the masses is large are difficult and not very well studied. We hope our exact result can serve as check/guide for future results in the area. We constructed the event horizon of this dynamical process by computing its null generators. We extracted a number of parameters that characterise the merger. We identified the line of caustics, the critical radius at which both horizons touch, the big horizon relaxation timescale among other things. We showed that our hypersurface describes all possible mergers, in the EMR limit, for which the small black hole is non-rotating. Finally we analysed the instants shortly before and after the pinch-on and found evidence for critical behaviour in the forming of the cusp and in the initial growth of the throat.

McCleary-Gaddy, Asia. "Prejudice against Black Americans versus Black Africans in College Admission." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2016. https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/609.

Full text
Abstract:
Three studies examined prejudice as an explanation for the overrepresentation of Black Africans and the under-representation of native-born Black Americans in Ivy League institutions. I hypothesized admission officers may use Black Africans as a "cover" for their prejudice against Black American natives. The admission of more Black Africans may allow admission officers to express their prejudice toward Black American natives while maintaining an egalitarian image. In Study 1, although the Black African applicant was evaluated as more likable, competent, and had a greater chance of being admitted than the Black American native applicant, differences were only significant when compared with the White American applicant. In Study 2, the Black American native applicant was significantly less likely to be admitted when being directly compared to a Black African applicant (versus a White American applicant). Study 3, tested the boundary effects of Study 2 by exposing participants to an Affirmative Action statement. Similar to Study 2, the target Black American native applicant was significantly less likely to be admitted when in direct comparison with a Black African applicant. In Studies 1 and 3, levels of internal motivation and/or levels of external motivation to respond without prejudice significantly moderated the relationship between ethnicity and decision to admit. Furthermore, findings indicated that the decision to admit the target Black American native versus the competitor was dependent on perceptions of SES. Collectively, these studies offer evidence that the admittance of Black African applicants may provide a cover for discrimination against Black American natives. These results suggest that ethnicity, in addition to race, may affect the educational opportunities of minority group members.

Dinga, Nasiphi. "Black spot analysis : infrastructure impacts on black spots in the Western Cape N1." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/13199.

Abstract:

This thesis discusses the infrastructural, vehicular and environmental factors that contribute towards road accidents. The role of infrastructure in improving road safety is the primary focus of the research, as infrastructure influences the driving experience. Road design and geometry are important for the consistency of highway performance. Road curvature, paved shoulders and the presence of an at grade intersection influence the drivers’ perception of the highway. The Laingsburg Beaufort West N1 highway has a high incidence of accidents, namely single vehicle accidents. For this reason, the road section has been classified as a hazardous location. These fatal accidents may be influenced by the infrastructural and geometrical factors of the highway. Western Cape geographical data was analysed for the period 2000 to 2007, to investigate the infrastructural and geometrical factors that influence the high accident rate. This was done through an ArcGis analysis, which gave insight into the properties of each of the fatal accidents. In order to get a level of confidence from the findings of the ArcGis analysis, a road safety audit was conducted. This was done through a general inspection of the N1 highway between Laingsburg and Beaufort West, which included driving through the road section at a constant speed, and completing a checklist of the operating elements of the highway. The road safety audit revealed that infrastructural problems (lack of guardrails, sign posts located close to highway) and geometrical factors (average paved shoulder width, single carriageway roads, and dangerous intersections) were present on the road. The Laingsburg Beaufort West analysis was the primary focus of the research. Data for the years 2010 to 2013, which was updated, was obtained from SANRAL and investigated for accident types and potential hotspots. An ArcGis analysis was also performed on the data. Fatal accidents were analysed, to determine whether the Provincial Government of the Western Cape would meet their accident reduction goals of reducing accidents by 50% between the years 2009 and 2014. A high incidence of fatal pedestrian accidents was observed in the Khayelitsha area. Recommendations include the relocation of poles and signs, increasing the paved shoulder width, installation of guardrails along the entire highway, as well as provision of pedestrian bridges and walkways in the Khayelitsha area.

Ramírez, Jesús H. "Fear, Death, and Being-a-problem: Understanding and Critiquing Racial Discourse with Heidegger’s Being and Time." Scholar Commons, 2019. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7896.

Full text
Abstract:
I use Heidegger’s Being and Time to understand and critique racial discourse, but to also determine Heidegger’s reach into issues like racial identity. I start by examining how his introductory statements in Being and Time on the term “existentiell” suggest a path towards a conception of identity. I then go into how a racial identity could, through his terminology, be conceived as what I call a “fear existentiell.” I demonstrate how society assists the individual in maintaining a racialized existence that is embedded in fear. I move toward an examination of Heidegger’s three concepts of death to demonstrate how two of these death concepts (verenden and ableben) are often attached to a racial identity through racial discourse. I move into a discussion that relies on W.E.B. Du Bois’s conception of the black American as a problem for America and, using his seminal question, “How does it feel to be a problem?” I show that the individual’s existence, as discussed in Heidegger, becomes a problem for itself through the racial discourse about its identity. I call this “Being-a-problem.” At first, I discuss it as inauthentic, as it is driven by social fear and generalized discussions about racial identity; however, I later demonstrate how it can move from inauthentic Being-a-problem to authentic Being-a-problem. I end with an analysis of racial discourse, showing that it exemplifies what I call, “race reports,” which are comprised of reports about the individual’s racial identity that conceal a person’s potential for authenticity.

Abstract:

This Master’s thesis looks at the solidarities of black radicals in the mid-20th century and traces how they evolved in contact with the Cuban Revolution. I argue that the Cuban Revolution refracted and altered existing threads of black radical solidarity by acting as a discursive site for theorizing and debating the tactics and ideology of black freedom. This resulted in the strengthening of black American Third World identity, the proliferation of a colonial understanding of the black condition, and the development of competing forms of black nationalism. This thesis positions the Cuban Revolution as a definitive moment in black radical intellectual history which did not necessarily originate any of the major threads of black radical solidarity, but which had a profound impact on the ways that the animating ideas of mid-20th century black radicalism were theorized and expressed from the 1960s through the 1970s and beyond.

Abstract:

This study interrogates the resonances of queer utopianism in Octavia Butler’s presentation of time in Kindred in order to address the lack of existing scholarship on the novel’s relationship with queer temporality. To conduct this interrogation, I utilize the work of queer optimists like Muñoz, Berlant, and Ahmed to deconstruct the text phenomenologically in conjunction with queer pessimists like Halberstam and Edelman to nuance this analysis. To prevent this analysis from being overtaken by a white gaze, I also make use of Black scholars like Morrison, Sharpe, Cooper, Gates, and Collins. In my analysis, I divide Butler’s presentation of time into present, past, and future- whereas the present refers to the American Bicentennial and the cultural disconnect the protagonist Dana experiences in her relationship with her white husband, the past signals the pull of Antebellum era white supremacist patriarchy and Dana’s need to engage in archival work to reconstitute the history that has been denied to her, and the future implies a nebulousness that blurs both eras together and instills the novel’s ending with an ambiguity that lends itself to both pessimistic and optimistic readings. I emphasize how Butler positions Black temporality as a queer temporality in the novel that challenge readers’ own relationship with the dominant white patriarchal culture.

Abstract:
Dance
Ph.D.
This dissertation examines the work of two African-American female choreographers, namely Joan Miller and Carole Johnson, and their engagement with the Black Aesthetic during the height of the Black Arts movement in America. The work seeks to examine how these subjects articulated, shaped, responded to, extended, critiqued or otherwise engaged with the notion of the Black aesthetic primarily through the mediums of concert dance and choreography. In consideration of the above, I conducted two, single subject case studies with Joan Miller and Carole Johnson in order to better understand the complexity of the experience of these African-American female dance makers during the selected period and gain a richer understanding of the ways in which they did or did not engage with the notion of the Black Aesthetic through the medium of dance. The subjects for the single case studies were selected because they fit the criteria to answer the research question: each woman is an African-American dance maker who was generating choreography and working actively in the dance field during the identified historical period (1960-1975.). The study employs content analysis of individual semi-structured interviews, cultural documents (including but not limited to playbills, photographs, newspaper clippings, video documentation, and choreographers' notes) and related literature (both revisionist and of the period) to generate a robust portrait of the experiences of the subjects under study. Taken simultaneously, critical race theory and Black feminist thought supply an analytical framework for this project that has allowed me to study the intersecting and mutually constitutive aspects of race, class, gender and economic location from a unique standpoint--that of African-American female choreographers during the Black Power/Black Arts Movement era--in an effort the answer the research question and sub-questions central to this project. The dissertation ultimately posits that both Johnson and Miller did, in fact engage meaningfully with key concepts articulated under the banner of the Black Aesthetic during the height of the U.S.-based Black Arts Movement. Moreover, the project asserts that both women extended their understandings of the Black Aesthetic in order to embrace additional issues of interest; namely, gender and class (on Miller's part) and international human rights (on Johnson's part.) As such, this project ultimately discusses the implications of the inclusion of Miller and Johnson's work within the canon of dance history/studies as a radical shift from the dominant narratives concerning the work of Black female choreographers during the period. Additionally, the dissertation asserts that the inclusion of these narratives in the context of literature and scholarship on the Black Power/Black Arts Movement supports moves in contemporary revisionist scholarship interested in broadening the research on the work of women in the creative arts during the period of interest. Lastly, the project suggests new research trajectories and areas of inquiry but explicating Patricia Hill Collins's work on Black Feminist Thought. By looking at the defining characteristics of Collins scholarship, the project extends the discussion on African-American women's epistemology to include dance performance and creation and complicates the role of who is empowered to make meaning through the lens of Black Feminist Thought and in what form.

Abstract:
This thesis presents new approaches to evolutions of binary black hole systems in numerical relativity. We analyze and compare evolutions from various physically motivated initial data sets, in particular presenting the first evolutions of Thin Sandwich data generated by the Meudon group.
For the first time two different quasi-circular orbit initial data sequences are compared through fully 3d numerical evolutions: Puncture data and Thin Sandwich data (TSD) based on a helical killing vector ansatz. The two different sets are compared in terms of the physical quantities that can be measured from the numerical data, and in terms of their evolutionary behavior.
The evolutions demonstrate that for the latter, "Meudon" datasets, the black holes do in fact orbit for a longer amount of time before they merge, in comparison with Puncture data from the same separation. This indicates they are potentially better estimates of quasi-circular orbit parameters. The merger times resulting from the numerical simulations are consistent with independent Post-Newtonian estimates that the final plunge phase of a black hole inspiral should take 60% of an orbit.

Abstract:
Black Studies programs are disappearing on college campuses. There is a need to know why these programs are being phased out of school curriculums. Two contributing factors leading to the disappearance of Black Studies are: the lack of student enrollment, and the cutback in the government education budget. A two-part survey was used to obtain an idea of what students think about Black Studies and if they consider them important. The result of the survey indicates that students know the importance of Black Studies but enroll in programs that may offer better financial stability.

Temple, Catherine Mary. "Thearubigins of black tea : manufacturing-based studies." Thesis, University of Surrey, 1999. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/773033/.

Full text
Abstract:
Thearubigins are polyphenolic oligmers which contribute to the quality of black tea: it is necessary to learn more of their origin and structure in order to understand their function, and to utilise opportunities to influence their development during processing to meet market demand. Tea samples were manufactured under controlled conditions, by methods parallel to commercial production in Malawi. Leaf handling, withering, fermentation and drying were manipulated. Conditions selected could be used in current commercial tea factories with only minor modifications. Non-volatile water-soluble components of black tea were analysed in an attempt to identify the critical points in the process. Solvent partition, adsorption chromatography or caffeine precipitation followed by size..exclusion HPLC were used to further separate the thearubigins and estimate molecular mass. Reverse-phase HPLC was also used; both methods were monitored by UV-VIS spectroscopy. Eluate was collected and portions challenged with chemical probes to identify functional groups within the oligmers. Theafulvin was shown to be heterogeneous in both chemical composition and mass. Prolonged fennentation in the presence of air promoted the development of theafulvin, caffeine-precipitable thearubigin, and hump unresolved by reverse-phase HPLC. This is the first evidence that theafulvin is a product of fermentation rather than a plant artefact. Leaf handling and fermentation conditions have a greater impact on liquor colour and perceived quality than withering or well-controlled drying. Modified dryer operating conditions preserved product composition and quality. Opportunities to manipulate product composition to meet market demand were identified.

Abstract:
This thesis is a portfolio which contains two essays. The first essay, “Reclaiming Wakanda,” is a character biography of the Black Panther comic character from his inception in 1966 until 2016. The work historicizes and politicizes a character written as apolotical by his creators while also placing him firmly within a legacy of Black Power, Civil Rights and other Black freedom movements of the second half of the 20th century. The second essay, “Incogengro: The Creation and Destruction of Black Identity in the ‘Safety’ of Harlem” considers how images and representations race and racial violence are constructed in graphic novel form when color is literally no longer present and within the confines of Harlem.

Full text
Abstract:
Most attempts by governments to reduce black market activity target the supplier rather than the consumer. The current thesis, however, sees reducing the willingness of the consumer to buy such goods as crucial in reducing the market. Over three studies, I examined variables that affected consumers buying from black markets and their perceptions of black markets. Study 1 (80 participants) confirmed the hypothesis that when the need to buy from a black market was for survival it would be considered more acceptable than to save money or to buy luxury goods. Study 1 further showed it was less acceptable to buy from the black market when the victim resulting from the purchase of the good was identified as an individual, rather than an organisation or society. Age and the gender of the consumer were also significant predictors of the rating of acceptability. In Study 2,65 participants completed a series of computer simulated scenarios to measure the price they would pay for different black market goods. Results indicate that the price participants were willing to pay for black market goods varied according to who the victim was (individual, organisation or society) and the participant's age and gender. Finally, in Study 3, 64 participants completed a similar task to Study 2, but some participants were informed about the true cost of black markets. Results confirmed the previous findings as well as indicating that the type of crime committed to procure the good and whether they saw information about the true cost of the markets also affected the price they would be willing to pay. The thesis concludes with suggestions for reducing black market activity.

Smith, Clara A. "The black surrogate mother." DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 2011. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/298.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the literary depiction of the black surrogate mother as she is created according to the author’s race, gender, background, experience, biases and goals. Even though she is one of the most successful and popular characters of fiction, she is also controversial. Her reputation is iconic as well as dichotomous. For example, she is credited for the exemplary upbringing of her white charges, while simultaneously blamed for neglecting her own children. Particularly, this paper looks at three black surrogate mothers who conform to the prototypical, often stereotypical, image of the black surrogate mother: Mammy, Aunt Mammy Jane, and Dilsey. The critique substantiates that Mitchell and Faulkner, respectively, were invested in depicting Mammy and Dilsey as representatives of the real black surrogate mothers of their lives. Although, the character of Mammy Jane mirrors Mammy and Dilsey in her commitment and devotion to her white family, Chesnutt employs her as a cautionary warning to the blacks who refuse to accept change and progress after Emancipation. The other three black surrogate mothers, Sofia, Berenice, and Ondine, are antithetical to the stereotypical black surrogate mother. Sofia, an accidental maid, is representative of Walker’s intense efforts to deconstruct the image of the black surrogate mother that plagued her throughout her lifetime. Unlike most white authors, McCullers crafts Berenice as independent, strong, and autonomous, not just as a black surrogate mother of a white child. Morrison provides Ondine with a husband and daughter to be concerned with so that she cannot be cast as the stereotypically loving, nurturing black mother of white children. The conclusion of this study validates that the literary black surrogate mother is most often a creation based upon her author’s specific and personal biases and goals. In conjunction with the above assertion, the critique also contends that the real life black domestic has been and will continue to be significantly influenced by her fictional representative.

Abstract:

The goal of this study is to examine racial residential segregation in U.S. metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas. The study uses 1990-2010 decennial census data to answer a broad theoretical question: is the historical black-white color line being replaced by a black-nonblack or white-nonwhite color line? The results show that black-white segregation is higher than black-nonblack and white-nonwhite segregation in metropolitan areas, nonmetropolitan areas, and the United States as a whole. A multivariate analysis reveals that population size tends to be associated with higher segregation in metropolitan areas and lower segregation in nonmetropolitan areas. As a control variable, diversity seems to play an important role in segregation by U.S. region. The study concludes that further research is needed to examine how the color line might change, especially in nonmetropolitan areas, which experienced rapid minority population growth during the 2000s.

Abstract:

The end of the Revolutionary War proved to be a significant moment in United States history. Not only did it signal the birth of a new nation, but it also affected the institution of slavery. Wartime rhetoric such as "All men are created equal," left the future of American slavery in doubt. Northern and mid-Atlantic states began to implement emancipation plans, and the question of what to do with free blacks became a pressing one. It soon became apparent that free blacks would not be given the same rights as white Americans, and the desire to have blacks removed from society began to increase. One proposed solution to this problem was the idea of sending free and manumitted slaves to Africa. A man by the name of John Brown Russwurm (1799–1851) would play a prominent role in the colonization movement, and his life and legacy reflect the controversy surrounding the idea of colonization.
