Full textResearch question: Which factors have driven the interest in bitcoin the last year, and what can explain this? Purpose: The purpose of this study is to get a better understanding of why Bitcoin has received increased attention the past year and to explore which factors have had an impact on the increased interest. The study also aims to confirm or reject the hypotheses which can be found in the theory chapter. Method: A qualitative and quantitative study with an abductive approach where the empirical data was collected through a survey and through two interviews with bitcoin experts. Conclusion: The study concludes that the increased interest in bitcoin trading partially depends on how it is portrayed by media and by other social participants. In addition to the fact that sheep-like behavior is an important factor, the quality bitcoin possesses is also crucial. The majority of our respondents believe that the cryptocurrency is a worthy investment because of its qualities such as decentralization, protection against inflation and a high return.

Full textDen digitala valutan Bitcoin har uppmärksammats mycket på senaste tid, bland annat på grund av dess höga volatilitet och stigande popularitet. Syftet med denna studie är att ta reda på varför företag har valt att implementera och använda Bitcoin som ett betalningsalternativ. Dessutom undersöka vilka kostnader och fördelar företag upplever med att acceptera Bitcoin som betalningsmedel, samt hur de ser på säkerheten och risker som kan uppstå. Studien utfördes med ett kvalitativt tillvägagångssätt där sex intervjuer genomförts med sex olika företag som tar emot Bitcoin som betalningsmedel. Studiens resultat visade på att det är flera olika faktorer som leder till att företag väljer att implementera Bitcoin som betalningsmedel. Den upplevda säkerheten var hög och de risker som förknippas med Bitcoin upplevdes inte som stor hos de tillfrågade respondenterna. Resultatet visade även att kostnaderna med Bitcoin som betalningsmedel är låga för företag, men att de till skillnad från tidigare studier visade på en väldigt hög transaktionskostnad för konsumenter.

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to investigate Bitcoins attributes and functions and discuss its effect on today’s economic system. The academic work that been published on the subject investigate technical and safety aspects, it is therefore interesting to analyse from a macroeconomic point of view. By using macroeconomic theory I will try to clarify if Bitcoin can compete with today’s currencies. Bitcoins volatility in value makes it doubtful. Bitcoins volatility in value makes it questionable, a volatility that cannot be controlled. Bitcoin meet part of the functions and characteristics that define a currency as macroeconomic theory, but not as many as fiatmoney and should therefore not be able to compete with today's currencies. Fiatmoney is preferable also in other areas such as acceptance and security. Bitcoin is better from a cost perspective, but under specific circumstances that are rarely met. Bitcoin will therefore until further serve as an alternative payment system and currency individuals and companies that are willing to take the risks included.

Full textThe concept of money has been around since we started using goods and commodities as means of payment. So for thousands of years people have been used to trading goods and services for money. The evolution of money as a tool for exchange started out with people using cocoa seeds, shells and other precious objects, that progressed into the use of precious metals, such as gold and silver. In recent centuries we have found ourselves using fiat currency and now, with the evolution of the Internet, we might be on the verge of the next step in the evolution cycle of money. Enter Bitcoin, which is the first decentralised digital currency that uses cryptography. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the positive and negative aspects of Bitcoin so far, and will investigate what the future might hold for the invention of this cryptocurrency.

Full textBackground: Satoshi Nakamoto is the group or person behind the cryptocurrency Bitcoin. The purpose of the currency was to make it possible to send money fast, anonymously and without involvement of third party, banks or national bank. Purpose: The purpose of our study is to be able to answer our theoretical questions through our empirical research. The authors of this study want to investigate how the bank’s attitude looks like if the currency becomes increasingly popular that companies and individuals begin to make transactions without their involvement. Methodology: To make it possible to answer our purpose, we have chosen an abductive method. Our data collection is from semi-structured qualitative interviews from relevant persons on banks. In our analytical part of the study we explain our collected data with help from our theoretical framework. In order to obtain qualified assessments, the study has used the delfi method. Conclusion: Our conclusion was that Bitcoin does not pose a threat against the banks since they can copy the technology behind it right away and as well because the bank’s core business is not about making transactions. The transaction technology Bitcoin relies on, in combination with a legitimate currency (for example the E-krona), has a possibility to be used by banks in the future.

Full textThe purpose of this report was to investigate consumers' knowledge and attitude towards bitcoin as a payment method. In order to achieve this purpose the following research question was formed: “What factors affect the acceptance of bitcoin amongst swedish consumers?”.To answer this research question, a quantitative survey study including a group of respondents limited to an age span of 20 to 50 years was conducted. 100 people were asked to participate, of which 76 chose to do so. The questions in this survey were based on existing theory and research in this field, which was also used as a basis for the analysis of the result. A regression analysis was performed on the outcome of the result, which indicated a significant correlation between swedish consumers acceptance of bitcoin and occupation. The difficulty lay within finding potential explanations to this outcome and the ones that have been discussed are based on pure speculation. This in spite of the outcome being strengthened by existing theory. It is therefore up to future researchers to answer WHY occupation affect swedish consumers acceptance of bitcoin, using the guidelines presented in the conclusion of this essay.

Mas, existem investidores que estão a utilizar Bitcoin como um ativo nos seus investimentos, seja numa estratégia mais passiva seja mais ativamente, com compra e venda consoante as flutuações cambiais. O aspeto negativo deste ativo financeiro é a sua volatilidade Apesar de, atualmente, Bitcoins e outras cripto moedas se encontrarem numa zona cinzenta, ou vazio legal, e serem um ativo de elevado risco, existe a possibilidade de estas pertencerem a portfolios de investimento, como agente de diversificação. Um agente diferente e recente, mas algo possível. Esta dissertação tem, portanto, como objetivo, analisar se a Bitcoin pode ser um agente diversificador num portfolio eficiente e bem diversificado.
Usually, we associate Bitcoin with the dark side of the finance world - Bitcoin as a mean for online blackmail or scam, the black market or even for Ponzi schemes, where Bitcoin and other digital currencies are used as mean of payment, instead of physical currency. But, there are also investors who are using Bitcoin as an investment asset, whether for buy and hold strategies or trading The downside of this investment asset it is the volatility Although risky and legally in a grey zone, it can be used in an investment portfolio as a diversification agent, an odd one but perhaps feasible. The aim of this thesis is to analyze if Bitcoin can as a diversification agent in an efficient and well diversified portfolio.

Full textBackground: The Swedish central bank has had a currency monopoly since 1897, which has meant that they since then have had exclusive right to issue money. Technological advances and the increasing use of the Internet has led to an evolvement of virtual communities and in some cases these communities created their own currency. Bitcoin is the worlds first fully decentralized currency. In the beginning the currency was based on technological curiosity to a handful of hobbyists. In recent years demand for bitcoins has increased, which has led to a dramatic price increase.Aim: The purpose of this thesis is to identify and analyze the transaction costs that may arise when Bitcoin is used as means of payment, and to compare these costs with the transaction costs associated with the use of traditional means of payment. Completion: The study was conducted through a mixture of qualitative and quantitative approaches as well as a processing of the transaction cost theory in the context of new institutional theory. The empirical material consists of three parts in which the study begins with a literature review for the reader to get a glimpse of what Bitcoin is and how the currency works. The qualitative approach is in the form of semi-structured interviews and finally the study's quantitative approach is presented in the form of a questionnaire to survey the use of bitcoin.Conclusion: The study shows that Bitcoins transaction costs are higher than conventional means of payments when account is taken to the fact that the currency is dependent on the current financial structure. The user furthermore disclaims the safety net that traditional means of payments offer. For Bitcoin to become an established means of payment it requires that the basic functions of money are fulfilled which the study shows is inadequate.

Full textThis paper examines bitcoin’s capacity as a hedge towards the Swedish stock market. To identify if correlation exists between the returns of bitcoin and SIX30RX (OMXS 30 including dividends) and thus respond to the research question the association is investigated. The time period considered is 2012-01-02 to 2016-10-21. Association is analysed using regression models. The results demonstrate that bitcoin is uncorrelated with the return for SIX30RX during this time period. Therefore, bitcoin can be classified as a hedge against the Swedish stock market.

Full textThis paper investigates the fulfillment of utility in the currency Bitcoin in relation to the Swedish krona in general andthe macroeconomic consequences of such fulfillment of utility in particular. The paper starts with the assumption thatthe utility generated by money is deduced from its qualities, mainly the quality in storage of value and the currency´spossibilities of generating low transaction costs. The investigation finds that there are possibilities that Bitcoin maygenerate a higher utility for its users than the Swedish krona under some circumstances. This mainly from Bitcoinsqualities in storage of value due to its predetermined change in money supply and in times when the Swedish krona´smonetary base is expanded by monetary policy and its subsequent inflation. In such periods when monetary expansionis undergoing in the Swedish krona, the investigation finds that the expected higher utility in Bitcoin in relation to theSwedish krona may cause a change of individuals incentives for currency, away from the Swedish krona and towardsBitcoin, if the profit gained from such change for an individual is great enough. From this, the central analysis ofBitcoins consequences on macroeconomic level follows. If there is an opportunity to change currency, which causesutility profits for individuals, there is also risk that the stimulus in monetary policy fails. This due to the decrease ofpurchasing power in the Swedish krona due to the lower demand of the currency in question subsequent to its loss init’s quality of storage of value. The analysis finds that depending on which theoretical perspective that is used, systemicrisks stemming from Bitcoin usage can be found in an analysis made with the Keynesian perspective. This while theopposite, that the systemic risks are introduced in the economy with the Swedish krona, is the result of an analysis madewith the Austrian theory of business cycle. Even with the systemic risks identified in the Keynesian analysis, reformsare suggested so that Bitcoin is able to co-exist with Keynesian monetary institutions to be able to take care of the utilitygained on the microeconomic, individual level that may result from Bitcoins usage as means of trade.

O Bitcoin é um sistema de pagamento totalmente digital independente de uma entidade centralizadora como bancos ou governos. O projeto foi criado e publicado em 2008 através da Internet. Entretanto apenas em 2009 a rede tornou-se operacional. O Bitcoin é um protocolo de código aberto e uma rede ponto a ponto de participantes que é responsável pelo funcionamento do sistema. Segurança criptográfica, ausência de taxas e de custos de instalação são fatores que convenceram várias empresas do mundo a adotá-lo como alternativa de pagamento. Apesar dos trabalhos acerca da moeda digital, pouco ainda se sabe sobre sua topologia e características, principalmente pela ótica de ciência de redes. Nesse sentido, o presente trabalho apresenta o estudo da dinamicidade de suas principais variáveis no seu funcionamento diário. No decorrer do trabalho são apresentadas duas formas de extração de dados da rede Bitcoin para futuras análises.
Bitcoin is a fully digital payment system independent of a centralized entity like banks or governments. The Bitcoin project was created and published in 2008. In 2009 the Bitcoin P2P network became operational. The Bitcoin is an open source protocol and a peer-topeer network of participants that is responsible for operating the system. Cryptographic security, absence of exogenous rates and of installation costs convinced several companies in the world to adopt it as a payment alternative. Although, there is an increasing amount of work on digital currencies, little is known about Bitcoin its topology and characteristics, particularly from the viewpoint of network science. In this sense, this paper presents the study of the dynamics of its main variables and their daily functioning. During the work we present two forms of network data extraction Bitcoin for further analysis.
