Abstract:
Bern conquered the Vaud and relieved Geneva in the first two months of 1536, the army then marching on to occupy the western Chablais. But Bern’s ultimate intentions were unclear, and there were divisions of opinion within the army and between it and the Small Council. Soon afterwards the French plundered their way through Savoy and reached Turin in Piedmont. Geneva extended its control of its hinterland, but had to sacrifice some internal autonomy, including the vidomat, to Bern; effectively, Geneva became a Bernese protectorate. Both Bern and France left the Savoy apanage of the duchy of Genevois-Nemours unscathed. The Valais communes meanwhile occupied the eastern Chablais. The fate of the bishopric of Lausanne and the county of Gruyère brought Fribourg into the picture.

Abstract:
This case study of two rural parishes in County Durham, England uses a wide range of medieval and early modern sources to offer an alternate view on the economic development involved in the transition from medieval to modern, partly explaining England’s rise to global economic dominance in the seventeenth century. These are an example of agrarian expansion, as coal mining did not come to these parishes until the nineteenth century. Low population, favourable seigneurial administration, and a commercialized society saw the emergence of large farms on the bishopric of Durham soon after the Black Death; these secure copyhold and leasehold tenures were among the earliest known in England. Individualism developed within a strong parish and village community that encouraged growth while enforcing conformity. Along with low rents, this allowed for a swift expansion of agricultural production in the sixteenth century as population rose and then as the coal trade expanded rapidly. The prosperity of these families is reflected in their lands, livestock, and consumer goods. Yet not all shared in this prosperity, as the poor and landless increased in number simply by population growth. Through reformation and rebellion, these and other parishes prospered without experiencing severe disruption or destruction. In north-eastern England, agrarian development was an evolution and not a revolution. England’s economic development was a single narrative, but a collection of regional experiences at different times and at different speeds.

Abstract:
The eighth chapter describes the lowest point of the Marlborough-Godolphin partnership. The Allied army in Spain is defeated at Almanza, Sarah is supplanted at court by her poor relation (and Harley’s cousin) Abigail Masham, and the Whigs turn against the government because the queen refuses to consult them over senior Church appointments (‘the bishoprics crisis’). Marlborough says he would be better able to serve in a military capacity only, while Harley tells the queen that the partnership has become a dangerous concentration of power: the Treasury should be put into commission and the war be brought to an end on realistic terms. Marlborough’s loyalty to Godolphin seems to waver. Then the discovery that one of Harley’s clerks, William Gregg, is a spy forces a premature confrontation. Marlborough obliges the queen to part with Harley and goes over to try to ‘get Spain by France’.
