Abstract:
Although bisexuals make up over half of sexual minority people, theology has not adequately addressed the experiences of bisexual people, nor the bisexual theory and theology that we have produced. The diversity and social locations within which concepts of bisexual theory, such as compulsory monosexism, emerge are described, drawing on data from psychology and the social sciences. Through a systematic review of Christian discourse on bisexuality, this chapter demonstrates how bisexuality has been constructed as immature, promiscuous, and as morally and politically inadequate. Key themes are identified in the bisexual theologies of scholars such as Marcella Althaus-Reid, Ibrahim Abdurrahman Farajajé, and Debra Kolodny, and their significance for broader faith communities and justice movements is clarified. Finally, directions for further bisexual theological work are identified.

Abstract:
Although discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity is more prevalent in the media now than ever before, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) population continues to encounter stigma, disproportionately high rates of trauma, and a resulting increased risk for developing mental illness. These factors, together with a conflicted history with the field of psychiatry, can create barriers to treatment that require practitioners to be active in their approach to providing LGBTQ-inclusive care. This chapter uses case examples to illustrate the range of psychosocial and clinical issues experienced by this population and suggests approaches for improving clinical care. It also discusses strategies for creating safe and LGBTQ-affirming environments.

Abstract:
This essay aims to educate scholars and practitioners about the context of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) parenting and perinatal psychology in LGBT people to further research on this population, as well as to ensure provision of appropriate care during the perinatal period. The essay begins by providing an overview of the minority stress framework, a theoretical framework that is useful in understanding the mental health concerns of LGBT people. The essay then discusses language and definitional issues, providing a brief glossary of key terms necessary for culturally competent work with LGBT people. Next, an overview is provided of the ways in which LGBT people are forming families in contemporary society. The body of the essay reviews existing literature on the transition to parenthood and perinatal mental health experiences of LGBT people and closes with some conclusions and future directions for research that follow from the existing literature.
