Abstract:
To analyze the middle latency auditory evoked potential index (MLAEPi), compared to the standard bispectral index (BIS), as a method for evaluating the sedation level in drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE). In this controlled clinical study on a sample of 99 obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or snoring patients, we compared the MLAEPi with the BIS after propofol infusion during the standard DISE technique in order to define the MLAEPi values within the observational window of the procedure. The DISE procedure was divided into eight steps, and we collected both MLAEPi and BIS data values from the same patient in every step. The MLAEPi showed a faster response than the BIS after propofol infusion during DISE. Therefore, the clinical use of the MLAEPi in evaluating the sedation level seems to be a good alternative to the current technological standards.

Abstract:
The study involved investigating the performance of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) stabilized soil blocks amended with sugarcane bagasse ash (SBA). Locally available soil was tested for its properties and characterized as clay of medium plasticity. This soil was stabilized using 4% and 10% OPC for manufacture of blocks of size 19 cm × 9 cm × 9 cm. The blocks were admixed with 4%, 6%, and 8% SBA by weight of dry soil during casting, with plain OPC stabilized blocks acting as control. All blocks were cast to one target density and water content followed by moist curing for a period of 28 days. They were then subjected to compressive strength, water absorption, and efflorescence tests in accordance with Bureau of Indian standards (BIS) specifications. The results of the tests indicated that OPC stabilization resulted in blocks that met the specifications of BIS. Addition of SBA increased the compressive strength of the blocks and slightly increased the water absorption but still met the standard requirement of BIS code. It is concluded that addition of SBA to OPC in stabilized block manufacture was capable of producing stabilized blocks at reduced OPC content that met the minimum required standards.

Abstract:
Two novel biodegradable intravascular stents (BIS) with different structures are introduced. Braiding-structural BIS and Z-structural BIS were fabricated from polydioxanone (PDO) monofilament by a hand-braiding method with a perforated mold, imitating commercial stents that have been used clinically. The fabrication process of these two BIS is described and stent parameters, mechanical properties, and degradation properties are reported. The findings reveal that Z-structural BIS have higher porosity, smaller longitudinal shortening rate, and higher radial force and recovery rate compared with the braiding-structural stent. During the degradation process, braiding-structural BIS maintained their mechanical properties higher than international standards for 12 weeks, while Z-structural stents maintained them for 16 weeks.

Abstract:

Smith, Norman Edward. "Directing Curriculum through Standards: A Content Analysis of the 2010 Texas State Social Studies Standards." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/228172.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2010 the Texas Education Agency adopted newly rewritten curriculum standards for the state's social studies courses K-12. The period leading up to the adoption of the standards proved contentious as the new standards moved out of the writing committees and into the public realm. The issues brought forth from initial readings of the standards appeared in the national spotlight as educators and the general public from around the country voiced their concerns. Many concerns centered on the belief that the Texas State Board of Education had rewritten the standards to reflect a more politically conservative world view along with an emphasis on traditional Judeo-Christian beliefs. Members of the state board argued that the previous standards reflected a politically liberal world view and that the board needed to bring balance to the standards. Because of national criticism changes were made but on a limited scale. The purpose of this study was to assess if the rewritten standards demonstrated a politically conservative preference as well as an emphasis on Judeo-Christian beliefs. During the analysis I included information regarding a preference for capitalism, a focus on Texas and U.S. history while minimizing world history and a focus on memorization rather than critical thinking. The analysis revealed that the rewritten standards demonstrate a politically conservative leaning while promoting traditional Judeo-Christian beliefs. Analysis and research further revealed that the standards promote capitalism while limiting the study of other economic systems in the world. In regards to the preference for Texas and U.S. history versus world history my analysis confirmed a limited presence of world history; however, research also revealed that this issue is not limited to the state of Texas, but a number of other states in the U.S. Finally, my analysis demonstrated that many of the standards' objectives begin with verbs found on verb lists from Bloom's Taxonomy. By using Bloom's Taxonomy I learned that a majority of objectives throughout the K-12 standards operate in the lower half of the Taxonomy rather than the upper half meaning that there is an emphasis on lower order thinking skills rather than higher order thinking skills.

Abstract:

Abstract:
At the same time as the competition in the construction industry is high. The demand for quality and efficiency has increased from the community. However, many of the issues concerning the management of digital documents and deliveries are not being handled in the manner required to obtain a standardized work process. The concept of BIM have flourished in the industry for a long period of time at this point, but despite this there is still a lot of confusion about what it actually means. The visualization aspect obtained from a BIM model has been well established but in a BIM model it is the information that defines the other aspects. It should therefore rather be interpreted as a flow of information with an associated 3D model than vice versa. Success factors regarding the implementation of a standardized working process in our neighboring countries has been government guidelines and directives. The so called BIM manuals are treating each part of the construction process from a BIM perspective and standards and processes get determined. Meanwhile, the process regarding similar guidelines has not been progressed in Sweden. Each actor is being described as their own pioneer and the risk is therefore great for the wheel to be reinvented every time. A step in the right direction would be if larger property developers, preferably the ones being owned by the government, in collaboration drew up documents similar to the ones found in our neighboring countries and required BIM in their procurements. Whether or not a BIM model can achieve legal status lays the foundation for the future of BIM, at the same time as this greatly affects the process of assuring the quality of the models.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to analyze and compare the development and harmonization of the sustainability reporting of The Big 4 in Sweden and the UK over four consecutive years (2016–2019). This study was done because of sustainability reporting is becoming increasingly important and auditing companies have the knowledge required on the subject. Therefore, it becomes relevant to analyze The Big 4s sustainability reports. The EU has created a new EU-directive in 2014 to promote sustainability reporting and its harmonization at a regional level. The EU-directive has affected Sweden's and the UK's national accounting laws. Using content analysis of annual reports, separate sustainability reports and information published on The Big 4s websites, the empirical data for the study has been developed. To be able to interpret the empirical data collected, institutional theory, stakeholder theory, legitimacy theory and conceptualization of non-financial reporting harmonization have been used. With this we have come to three different results. The first result is that The Big 4 uses different presentation form in each country. The second result is that the contents of The Big 4:s sustainability reports differ between the two countries. The third and final result is that all companies belonging to The Big 4 in Sweden and the UK are part of the FNGC collaboration.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This research paper includes a 6 months environmental study of impact assessment of solid waste on Groundwater and Soil in and around of dumping site at Kasba Bawada, Kolhapur that includes a detailed study of the groundwater and soil characteristics. The dumping and open burning practices will led to the percolation of waste into the soil and groundwater which will eventually lead to various health and environment issues. In order to assess the groundwater and soil quality, assessment was carried out for the Groundwater and Soil near the dumping and landfill site around the 1 km radius in ecosystem is indeed an important resource which has yet to be studied on a bigger scale to meet the ever increasing demand for the water and soil for their use as resources. 6 Groundwater and 5 Soil sampling sites are selected in and around the dumping site. During the project, various physical, organic, inorganic and nutrient parameters were studied and also the detection of the heavy metals was carried out for soil and groundwater analysis. Most of the groundwater parameters are within the limit of BIS and WHO standards of drinking water except Total Solids which is higher in all sites and Nitrate which are higher than the limits in 2 sites when compared with the standards as these sites are near and around the dumping sites. The Nutrient parameters of Soil like Organic Carbon, Organic Matter, Available Phosphorous are present higher than the limit in all the sampling sites. The presence of high organic Carbon and the Organic matter with Available Phosphorous indicates the good fertility of the soil in and around the dumping site. The heavy metals are within the limit in soil when compared with the standards whereas in the groundwater, Lead, Copper, Nickel and Cadmium are present higher than the limit when compared drinking water quality standards established by the BIS and the WHO standards during the post monsoon of 2019 and pre monsoon of 2020 for other parameters.

Abstract:
<p>The current Indian code for seismic design of structures is based on the force-based design (FBD) philosophy but the damage is more related to strain and displacement rather than strength. Also, structures can’t be designed for target design objectives by FBD method under a specified hazard level. Hence it became necessary to develop new codes and standards based on more robust design methodology to overcome the various shortcomings. The paper presents the results of a study conducted to evaluate the effect of provisions mandated by BIS design guidelines on the performance of a multi-storeyed building in event of a seismic activity. The performance of the building was evaluated on the parameters given in the FEMA guidelines. It was observed that the RC buildings designed as per Indian standard is found to be under-utilized and its overstrength ratio is observed to be of order two, leading to uneconomical design as compared to the building designed according to Performance based methodology for achieving a similar value of the performance level.</p>

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Presently slope stability analysis and landslide hazard monitoring are the most challenging tasks in mountainous regions like the Himalayas. These events which were earlier considered as a process of attaining equilibrium in the topographic surface of the earth by nature, with the increase in population and onset of industrial revolution in the past few decades, changed the scenario of this natural phenomenon and transformed it into a disaster. The main reason for this is the utilization of inaccessible terrains for engineering mega projects and urbanization. Today, landslides are considered as the worst natural disasters and have become the objects of mass destruction and thereby new approaches for landslide study are being constantly developed with time to understand this natural phenomenon as much as possible. Witnessing the severity of this disaster in India and globally; this study is aimed to study landslide hazard in the domain of landslide susceptibility mapping and hazard zonation. This approach makes use of different instability causing parameters prevalent in the area to demarcate the region into different probable hazard zones. The resulting maps thus prepared are called Landslide Hazard Zonation (LHZ). For the study, a sub-part of Karewa Basin is selected as an area of study in Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Two different methods, the established Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) method and the new machine learning based classification method using decision tree classification algorithm, are selected for the study of landslide hazard in the area. The resulting maps from both methods are analyzed and validated using the landslide inventory data. The results from both the methods are also used to perform a comparative analysis to examine which method yields better results. It is concluded that machine learning based methods, provided accurate training dataset can yield better results than the traditional methods which require a makeover to incorporate more data, made available with the advancement of technology.

Abstract:
Abstract Identifying and analyzing hazards and their associated risks have been a major concern of the oil industry since the Piper Alpha incident in 1988, but techniques to assess risks were only explored further in the last decade after the incident in Macondo. It became clear that there were many hazards associated with oil exploration and exploitation activities; therefore, these hazards had to be identified and proper measures to contain their damage had to be put in place. This led to a development in existing risk analysis techniques such as bowtie diagrams, fault trees, Bayesian networks and Markov methods, but also hybrid techniques such as Markov chain Monte Carlo methods and fuzzy fault trees. In this work, we presented and discussed a literature review on these techniques, focusing on their contributions to the oil industry, as well as existing legislation and standards concerning safety. After comparing advantages and disadvantages of these techniques, we proposed a methodology using graphs to assess the safety level associated to a standardized sequence of operations. This methodology is based on an ontology of operations (which provides standardization) and the concept of BIS (barrier integrated sets), which are sets of elements from a well that ensure safety to perform each operation. With available statistical data, or by using fuzzy sets to cover their absence, this methodology is able to quantify reliabilities and determine if a certain operation can be performed safely based on a risk acceptance criterion. In order to demonstrate this concept, we calculated the reliability of two primary BIS during the intermediate drilling phase and showed how the reliability changes based on the corresponding drilling operational sequence.

Abstract:
Abstract The restriction of hazardous substances directive is an environmental directive being passed by the European Union in February 2003. It was scheduled to be effective from on July 1, 2006. It mainly aims at product ingredients and engineering process standards in manufacturing. Any electrical and electronic equipment contains hazardous substances over the regulated limitation will not be allowed to be offered on the market in European Union. Mar 31, 2015, European Union issued a directive to add four new restrictions on the concentration of phthalates that were Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP). The limitation of concentration by weight is 0.1% for each substance. The phthalates which are used as plasticizers to be used in indirectly material as dicing tape for the semiconductor industry. Many related researches mentioned that temperature and time effects on the migration of DEHP, which means the product existed the risk to be contaminated. Therefore, DEHP is phased out from indirectly material to evaluate DEHP-free indirectly material. The manufacture result is shown in this study to evaluate new indirectly material without DEHP.

Abstract:
The next generation of alternative fuels is being investigated through advanced chemical and biological production techniques for the purpose of finding suitable replacements to diesel and gasoline while lowering production costs and increasing process yields. Chemical conversion of biomass to fuels provides a plethora of pathways with a variety of fuel molecules, both novel and traditional, which may be targeted. In the search for new fuels, an initial, intuition-driven evaluation of fuel compounds with desired properties is required. Due to the high cost and significant production time needed to synthesize these materials at a scale sufficient for exhaustive testing, a predictive model would allow chemists to preemptively screen fuel properties of potentially desirable fuel candidates. Recent work has shown that predictive models, in this case artificial neural networks (ANN’s) analyzing quantitative structure property relationships (QSPR’s), can predict the cetane number (CN) of a proposed fuel molecule with relatively small error. A fuel’s CN is a measure of its ignition quality, typically defined using prescribed ASTM standards and a cetane testing engine. Alternatively, the analogous derived cetane number (DCN), obtained using an Ignition Quality Tester (IQT), is a direct measurement alternative to the CN that uses an empirical inverse relationship to the ignition delay found in the constant volume combustion chamber apparatus. DCN data points acquired using an IQT were utilized for model validation and expansion of the experimental database used in this study. The present work improves on an existing model by optimizing the model architecture along with the key learning variables of the ANN and by making the model more generalizable to a wider variety of fuel candidate types, specifically the class of furans and furan derivatives, by including specific molecules for the model to incorporate. The new molecules considered include tetrahydrofuran, 2-methylfuran, 2-methyltetrahydrofuran, 5,5′-(furan-2-ylmethylene)bis(2-methylfuran), 5,5′-((tetrahydrofuran-2-yl)methylene)bis(2-methyltetrahydrofuran), tris(5-methylfuran-2-yl)methane, and tris(5-methyltetrahydrofuran-2-yl)methane. Model architecture adjustments improved the overall root-mean-squared error (RMSE) of the base database predictions by 5.54%. Additionally, through the targeted database expansion, it is shown that the predicted cetane number of the furan-based molecules improves on average by 49.21% (3.74 CN units) and significantly for a few of the individual molecules. This indicates that a selected subset of representative molecules can be used to extend the model’s predictive accuracy to new molecular classes. The approach, bolstered by the improvements presented in this paper, enables chemists to focus on promising molecules by eliminating less favorable candidates in relation to their ignition quality.

Bala. L51600 Engineering Critical Assessment of Girth Welds in Small Diameter Pipe. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), June 1989. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010101.

Full text
Abstract:
Transmission pipeline girth welds are fabricated and inspected to rigorous material standards such as API 1104, CSA Z 184 and BSI 4515. These standards contain weld defect acceptance levels based on good workmanship criteria and have been arrived at on the basis of traditional welding and inspection practices. In certain instances, defects that do not meet the workmanship standards have been accepted on the basis of an engineering critical assessment (ECA) using the British Standard PD 6493 assessment technique. The use of ECA is now being incorporated into the pipeline codes. Four girth welds containing hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) defects at the root were prepared in small diameter (305 mm) thin wall (6.35 mm) X52 pipes using E6010 (E41010) electrodes for the root and hot passes and E7010 (E48010) electrodes for the fill and capping passes. The CTOD tests were performed for the girth welds using each of HIC as well as fatigue pre-crack for the crack. The minimum, the average and an intermediate (between minimum and average) CTOD value at -40C obtained for the specimens containing HIC were used to determine the surface crack sizes for the girth weld roots from BS PD6493. The girth weld containing the 1/4 thickness HIC was full scale tested at -40C. The test was terminated when the remote strain gauges showed plastic deformation/ buckling in the pipe. The second and third full- scale girth weld tests were carried out with the half wall and an intermediate (between 1/4 and 1/2 wall) wall defect. In both cases the girth failed when the remote strain gauge readings in the pipe were still elastic.

Abstract:
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Advanced Modeling Object Standard (AMOS) has been developed by the CAD/BIM Technology Center for Facilities, Infrastructure, and Environment to establish standards for support of the Advanced Modeling process within the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Federal Government. The critical component of Advanced Modeling is the objects themselves- and either make the modeling process more difficult or more successful. This manual is part of an initiative to develop a nonproprietary Advanced Modeling standard that incorporates both vertical construction and horizontal construction objects that will address the entire life cycle of facilities within the DoD. The material addressed in this USACE Advanced Modeling Object Standard includes a classification organization that is needed to identify models for specific use cases. Compliance with this standard will allow users to know whether the object model they are getting is graphically well developed but data poor or if it does have the data needed for creating contract documents. This capability will greatly reduce the designers’ efforts to either build an object or search/find/edit an object necessary for the development of their project. Considering that an advanced model may contain hundreds of objects this would represent a huge time savings and improve the modeling process.

Abstract:
The first use of radiographic standards for inspection and acceptance of finished girth welds was adopted by API in 1953. This standard was largely based on the Unfired Pressure Vessel Code which was adopted by ASME in 1931. At that time and to this day, weld defect acceptance standards are based on workmanship principles. In other words, the so called "Workmanship defect acceptance standards" reflect the weld quality levels produced by. a trained welder using satisfactory materials, equipment and procedures. For many years exclusive use was made of the API 1104 workmanship defect acceptance levels for all field pipeline and related facilities welds. This, and very similar defect acceptance standards (e.g. BS 4515, CSA 2184, AS 1697, etc.) are used in many countries throughout the world. Though the specified acceptance levels have no scientific basis, the use of workmanship standards has provided an adequate level of quality control for many years. Particularly worthy of attention in this context is the fact that the currently stipulated levels have been developed for welds in lower strength pipe grades. Unfortunately, the developments in acceptance levels have not kept pace with those occurring in-pipeline technology. Furthermore, pipe size, strength and toughness, weld metal properties or pipeline operating conditions are not considered in the present-day defect acceptance standards. Problems of this kind have led companies involved in gas/oil transporting activities to develop their own standard requirements or at least to produce a supplement to the general standards. This report describes the results of an investigation into the engineering significance of girth weld defect acceptance criteria based upon weld quality (or workmanship) considerations. To this end, research efforts were divided into a theoretical and an experimental part. The theoretical study involved a comparison of internationally used weld quality standards and codes for pipeline welding in order to identify the general features common to them and to obtain a clear view of the different acceptability criteria. The experimental part was designed to provide factual information on the failure behaviour of defective girth welds in large pipe diameter pipe lines. The focal point of the experimental examinations was to compare, on the basis of wide plate test specimen behaviour, the performance levels of girth welds containing planar weld defects which were grossly out of tolerance with respect to most present-day weld quality (workmanship standards) specifications.
