Abstract:

ABSTRACT External biotin greatly stimulates bacterial growth and alfalfa root colonization by Sinorhizobium meliloti strain 1021. Several genes involved in responses to plant-derived biotin have been identified in this bacterium, but no genes required for biotin transport are known, and not all loci required for biotin synthesis have been assigned. Searches of the S. meliloti genome database in combination with complementation tests of Escherichia coli biotin auxotrophs indicate that biotin synthesis probably is limited in S. meliloti 1021 by the poor functioning or complete absence of several key genes. Although several open reading frames with significant similarities to genes required for synthesis of biotin in gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria were found, only bioB, bioF, and bioH were demonstrably functional in complementation tests with known E. coli mutants. No sequence or complementation evidence was found for bioA, bioC, bioD, or bioZ. In contrast to other microorganisms, the S. meliloti bioB and bioF genes are not localized in a biotin synthesis operon, but bioB is cotranscribed with two genes coding for ABC transporter-like proteins, designated here bioM and bioN. Mutations in bioM and bioN eliminated growth on alfalfa roots and reduced bacterial capacity to maintain normal intracellular levels of biotin. Taken together, these data suggest that S. meliloti normally grows on exogenous biotin using bioM and bioN to conserve biotin assimilated from external sources.

Abstract:

BioMNY, a bacterial high-affinity biotin transporter, is a member of the recently defined class of ECF (energy-coupling factor) transporters. These systems are composed of ABC (ATP-binding-cassette) ATPases (represented by BioM in the case of the biotin transporter), a universally conserved transmembrane protein (BioN) and a core transporter component (BioY), in unknown stoichiometry. The quaternary structure of BioY, which functions as a low-affinity biotin transporter in the absence of BioMN, and of BioMNY was investigated by a FRET (Förster resonance energy transfer) approach using living recombinant Escherichia coli cells. To this end, the donor–acceptor pair, of Cerulean and yellow fluorescent protein respectively, were fused to BioM, BioN and BioY. The fusion proteins were stable and the protein tags did not interfere with transport and ATPase activities. Specific donor–acceptor interactions were characterized by lifetime-based FRET spectroscopy. The results suggest an oligomeric structure for the solitary BioY core transporter and oligomeric forms of BioM and BioY in BioMNY complexes. We surmise that oligomers of BioY are the functional units of the low- and high-affinity biotin transporter in the living cell. Beyond its relevance for clarifying the supramolecular organization of ECF transporters, the results demonstrate the general applicability of lifetime-based FRET studies in living bacteria.

Abstract:

The three quasi-binary phase systems BiOX-BiOY (X, Y = Cl, Br, I) have been investigated by X-ray powder methods. No quaternary phases were found in the three systems. BiOCl-BiOBr and BiOBr-BiOI form systems of unlimited mutual solubility. BiOCl-BiOI is a system of limited solubility at the iodine-rich side. In the BiOBr-BiOI system a strong deviation from Vegard’s rule is observed with respect to one of the lattice parameters. A few methods to quantify such a deviation are briefly discussed and a possible explanation for the strong deviation in the BiOBr-BiOI system is proposed. Error calculations have been performed to estimate uncertainties in the concentration parameter x of the investigated mixtures. The crystal structure of BiOI has been re-determined by single crystal structure analysis.

La tentación es grande y no del todo errónea: Bioy Casares es Boswell; Borges es el doctor Johnson. Escribir y pensar sobre Bioy Casares sería hacerlo ancilarmente, a través de Borges, repitiendo así su propia estrategia; al menos, la que decidió en Borges. Este parcial acierto merece, no obstante, muchas matizaciones. Boswell fue, sobre todo, un retratista; Johnson fue, efectivamente, su objeto. En cambio, Adolfo Bioy Casares (1914-1999) no fue sólo el retratista de Borges, aunque lo retratase en Borges. Cuando el doctor Johnson habla, en la Vida de Boswell, el libro se torna de autoría incierta. En cambio, Borges no es de Borges sino de Bioy aunque hable Borges todo el tiempo. Edmund Wilson escribió, sobre las memorias de Casanova, que el libro mostraba las rítmicas recurrencias que el carácter le inflige al destino. Aquí hay dos caracteres que van modulando dos destinos a partir de las huellas de la escritura. El de Borges, por una vez, está en manos de Bioy, y Bioy se inclina sobre el destino de su personaje como lo hubiese hecho un novelista del siglo XIX. Entomólogo y psicólogo, consultor sentimental e hijo díscolo, autor y rentista, Bioy escribió sus diarios de Borges, pero únicamente los publicó cuando ya había conjurado el peligro de ser sólo Boswell.

Analisamos a personagem Faustine, de A invenção de Morel (1940), novela de Adolfo Bioy Casares, tendo em vista a retomada do modelo hoffmaniano por meio da referência à Olímpia, a personagem artificial do conto fantástico tradicional O Homem da areia (1816), de . A partir da leitura sobre a personagem artificial, em Ruth Brandão, Eliane Moraes e Agamben, constatou-se de que maneira a criação de Bioy Casares atualiza o modelo hoffmaniano. Ao imaginar uma nova Olímpia, Bioy Casares reforça os elementos de ficção científica dessa importante personagem de Hoffmann, o que possibilita uma análise comparativa entre a novela latino-americana e a alemã.

Abstract:

Este artículo reconstruye el concepto de lo fantástico esbozado en el prólogo de Adolfo Bioy Casares a la Antología de la literatura fantástica y examina algunas de las inclusiones y omisiones más representativas de la colección. Debido a que Bioy incurre en imprecisiones y contradicciones al teorizar lo fantástico, este trabajo parte del análisis de un ejemplo concreto, “Ser polvo”, de Santiago Dabove. Aunque Dabove emplea varias de las estrategias que Bioy condena y recurre a fuentes que la Antología no admite, su narración es ejemplar, especialmente cuando se compara con “Más allá”, de Horacio Quiroga. El análisis de las estrategias textuales empleadas en ambos relatos y de sus vínculos con la estética sensacionalista de Edgar Allan Poe revela que lo fantástico es, en la Antología, un concepto plástico y utilitario que no se puede teorizar, pero que tiene un impacto tangible en la selección de textos. La inclusión de Dabove en la Antología y la exclusión de Quiroga - afamado precursor de lo fantástico - es el resultado de la aplicación de un concepto de lo fantástico en que las preferencias editoriales y los objetivos específicos de la Antología se cruzan con la polémica noción de “calidad literaria”.

Resumen: La Antología de la literatura fantástica es una antología singular en la historia de las literaturas hispánicas. Compilada por Jorge Luis Borges, Adolfo Bioy Casares y Silvina Ocampo, se ha transformado en un clásico del idioma aunque la mayoría de sus textos provenga de varias literaturas del Ocidente y del Oriente, sobre todo de las literaturas de lengua inglesa. La antología ha servido para firmar un género literario, que ya tenía sus raíces en el Río de la Plata del siglo XIX, en la dirección estética que defendían los tres escritores y que se oponía a la estética realista entonces dominante. Aquí se examina cómo surgió la antología, la parte que ha jugado cada uno de los antólogos y las diferencias de criterio de selección de autores extranjeros y nacionales entre sus dos ediciones: la primera de 1941 y la segunda de 1965. Resumo: A Antología de la literatura fantástica é uma antologia singular na história das literaturas hispânicas. A antologia serviu para consolidar um gênero literário, que já tinha suas raízes no Rio da Prata do século XIX, na direção estética defendida pelos três escritores e que se opunha à estética realista então dominante. Aqui se examina como surgiu a antologia, a parte desempenhada por cada um dos antologistas e as diferenças de critério de seleção de autores estrangeiros e nacionais entre suas duas edições: a primeira de 1941 e a segunda de 1965. The article deals with the prolific creative period of the prominent Argentine prose writer of the twentieth century Adolfo Bioy Casares - 1940-s. This is the time when his original artistic style was formed, which is studied in the context of the interrelation of elements and features, inherent in both popular and “elevated” literature. The analysis of the novel The Invention of Morel (1940) and the short story In Memory of Pauline (1948) allows us to trace how in Bioy Casares’s prose the features of the crime fiction genre are organically combined with philosophical fiction, and what enriching imprint on this artistic experiment has been left by the collaboration of the writer with Jorge Luis Borges and Silvina Ocampo.

Este ensaio objetiva apresentar reflexões sobre o romance Diario de la guerra del cerdo, escrito pelo argentino Adolfo Bioy Casares e publicado no ano de 1969. Toma-se por foco a análise de três eixos temáticos de relevo constantes do referido texto literário, quais sejam, a velhice, a memória e o poder. Para tanto, dialoga-se perspectivas teóricas de Simone de Beauvoir, no que toca à velhice, e Gerard Genette e Phillipe Lejeune acerca do narrador e do registro de memórias. El presente artículo elabora un análisis de la novela La invención de Morel (1940) del argentino Adolfo Bioy Casares, concentrando las investigaciones en la invención, tanto en sentido científico como literario, a partir de que pensamos la hipótesis de diálogo con la novela La montaña mágica (1924) de Thomas Mann. Tenendo en cuenta el escenario aislado vinculado a una enfermedad, y aspectos como la música, el tiempo, el amor y las clases sociales en evidencia, buscamos investigar las equivalencias y posibles desdoblamientos, asimismo la hipotética respuesta musical de Thomas Mann al supuesto homenaje de Bioy Casares. Este artigo tem o objetivo de examinar diálogos entre a tradição das literaturas de língua inglesa, os romances La invención de Morel e Plan de evasión e, notadamente, o conto “Un perro que se llamaba Dos”, do escritor argentino Adolfo Bioy Casares. Para isso, toma-se como ponto de partida o contexto de ascensão do romance inglês, em que se verificam mudanças socioculturais engendradas pelo puritanismo, pelo individualismo e pelo capitalismo nascente, e as relações entre tal contexto e o fazer literário. Além de levar em conta aspectos constantes de Robinson Crusoé, de Daniel Defoe, o estudo analisa modulações do romance inglês verificadas em Narrativa de Arthur Gordon Pym, de Edgar Allan Poe, A ilha do tesouro, de Robert Louis Stevenson, e A ilha do dr. Moreau, de H. G. Wells, para refletir sobre suas interlocuções com a narrativa de Adolfo Bioy Casares.

This article presents a study about violence in the novel Bioy (2012), by Diego Trelles Paz, by means of two axes: time and narrative voices. Both structure a narration characterised by its narrative multiplicity, correlated with the complexity of the violence that the text explores, emerged from Peru at the end of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st century. Abstract:

This article presents a vision of the city of Buenos Aires through some novels and short stories created by Argentine writers, in which their characters use "masks" to face reality or, in some cases, fiction. The various characters have masks used to disguise their identities in their relationship with other people and to hide their feelings. The time used to analyze these issues will be: 1) the "real" time, that is, the action that takes place in a linear and continuous time and; 2) a "fragmented" time, represented in two or more levels in which reality and fiction are superimposed and even, at a certain point, confused. The city is the background frame where the real and the illusory meet through the characters of Adolfo Bioy Casares, Leopoldo Marechal, Julio Cortázar, Ernesto Sábato, Marco Denevi, Pedro Orgambide, among others. Abstract:

O presente artigo discute a importância da vida em comunidade, proposta como um estilo de existência que resiste às estratégias de domesticação dos indivíduos. Pretende-se apresentar uma reflexão crítica sobre esse tema presente na obra Dormir al sol, do escritor argentino Adolfo Bioy Casares. Para tal debate, buscou-se inspiração na relação conflituosa entre dois personagens: Lucho Bordenave, um pacato relojoeiro, e seu vizinho Gordo Picardo, um malandro que vive da venda clandestina de jogos de azar. Para defender essa relação conturbada entre vizinhos tão diferentes, propõe-se a abordagem do conceito de comunidade defendido pelo filósofo italiano Roberto Esposito, que recupera o sentido original do termo, de uma obrigação para com o outro – sobretudo se esse outro é diferente –, com uma convivência que aceita o conflito como elemento essencial para a construção de relações sólidas.

This article analyzes the intersection of works by Ambrose Bierce, Adolfo Bioy Casares, and Jorge Luis Borges as mirror images of themes and descriptions in describing a miraculous occurrence, albeit only in the labyrinthine mind of the protagonist, often categorized within the genre of the fantastic. The article’s intertextual approach focuses on sensorial perceptions that only grant validity to an internal reality (what the mind interprets) rather than to an external reality (what the eyes see). All three works in this study are concerned with a criminal condemned to death who seeks to prolong his life. The protagonists have similar responses, although their motivations are different.

Abstract:

In this work, three additives BiOX (BiOI, BiOBr, and BiOF) for Al-H2O reaction have been synthesized using chemical methods. SEM analysis shows that the structure of BiOF is nanoparticles, while BiOBr and BiOI have flower-like structures composed of nanosheets. Then, Al-BiOI, Al-BiOBr, and Al-BiOF composites have been prepared using the ball milling method. The effect of halogen ions on the performance of hydrogen generation from Al hydrolysis has been explored. The results indicate that the conversion yields of Al-BiOBr, Al-BiOI, and Al-BiOF for hydrogen generation are 96.3%, 95.3%, and 8.9%, respectively. In particular, the maximum hydrogen generation rate (MHGR) of Al-BiOI is as high as 3451.8 mL g−1 min−1, eight times higher than that of Al-BiOBr. Furthermore, the influence rule of BiOX (X = F, Cl, Br, and I) on Al-H2O reaction has been studied using density functional theory. The results illustrate that HI can be more easily adsorbed on the Al surface as compared with HF, HCl, and HBr. Meanwhile, the bond length between halogen ions and the Al atom increased in the order of F−, Cl−, Br−, and I−. Therefore, the dissociation of I− from the Al surface becomes easier and will expose more active sites to enhance the reaction activity of Al. In summary, the BiOI has the most favorable performance to Al-H2O reaction.

La palabra destino siempre parece ligada al género fantástico, pero en el momento en que el destino se presenta como una constricción social que encamina la vida y las acciones de los personajes por derroteros específicos se abre la posibilidad de leer El sueño de los héroes de Adolfo Bioy Casares en esa conjunción evasiva que es la intercepción del sueño y la vigilia, de lo fantástico y lo social. Esta novela expresa una visión fantástica del mundo, pero también habla de lo que no es fantástico: en esta obra, lo no natural se entreteje con lo cotidiano de manera que un aspecto ilumina al otro y acaba por darle su razón de ser. El hecho fantástico constituye siempre el eje de la narración, pero no la agota, de modo que este trabajo propone una lectura que, abarcando lo fantástico, lo rebasa y, de esa manera, concluye que la novela es una alegoría de los mecanismos sociales.
